Hey everyone, I'm considering on buying the Fire HD 8 with alexa, but I was wondering if multi window is available on it since I use it quite a lot.
I've not seen 'multi windows' yet. At least not on a tablet from Amazon. The only thing I can think of that might be close, but likely way off, is dual screen. You can project your screen over your screen...like split screen except you can move it around. That is one of the awesome features that's supposed to come with screen mirroring aka Wireless Display.
Nope. Its a Android N 7.x Feature. I think all Amazon Tablets are running 5.1.1
My Fire HD8 2017 (gen7) is running douglas-user 5.1.1 LVY48F 50.5.7.9_user_579225620

Hey Guys,
I just now bought fire hd8(8gh gen) and i found our that it doesn't support display mirroring.
I don't know why Amazon decided to go in the reverse direction of technological evolution and for some reason they are removing display mirroring from all their latest devices like FIRE HD 8 and 10, fire TV stick 4k.
Here are my questions:
1) does anyone know the reason of this getting removed?
2) Is there a work around to make it working?

Not a great buy at the moment IMO. You can usually get deals for the FireTV 4K Stick for ~$25. The cube is more than 3x the price.
Why would you invest so much in the cheap crappy devices? Might as well jsut get a real Android TV box.

Well I like Amazon devices and when side loaded with the right apps they work very well, I was using the Amazon Fire TV 2nd Gen (the flat square one) which I still think was Amazons best. I saw a Cube going a lot cheaper so bought one and well so far it's working great. The trouble with my old 2nd gen was the low on storage issue even though it was not really low on storage I think Amazon as slipped something on there to make it look as if the storage was low. The Cube I think is not a cheap crappy device at all and I would not go back to an Android box, ever.
Some other cons..
1. Amazon Game Controllers are no longer supported
2. Many sideloaded app icons show blank
I love mine though regardless of it's faults, with custom launcher anyway. Was finally worth the upgrade at prime day prices from my 2nd gen fire tv box.
2. Many sideloaded app icons show blank
Yes have a couple of apps were the icon does not load but they still work OK, but it does spoil the Cube. Also when I used my old TV 2nd gen (flat one) my amp would be turned up to 2 to 3 lights this Cube as to be turned up 5 to 6 lights so there is also a sound issue.

But you are on an Android box. You are rooting your device to make it closer to an Android box. You are basically telling people you prefer the Android software over native Android then what in gods name are you doing on XDA?
OK I see your point the Cube runs on Android and as for rooting to be honest I have no idea how to root

Yes, it completely ruins the UI. I use Wolf Launcher instead. Would of returned it and carried on using 2nd gen box if no custom launcher..
..and not supporting their own controller, forcing me to sell it and use an xbox pad.. really ****ty move on their part.
Other than that though, yeah.. it's without a doubt the best amazon device.
If they put an Android TV version of All4 on the store though, I'd probably buy a shield. I also have games and apps I paid for on Amazon, which stops me getting a shield.
i think the broken icons are to do with the server where amazon gets its apps/icons from. when we install our apps the appstore cross references the apk and its icon/logo/banner with the ones on its server. if the apk isnt recognised on amazons server it presents it as a broken icon. i think there is a way round the broken icon thingy if you google atvlauncher trek icon design there is an icon generation page that lets you create your own in fact here is the link http://atvlauncher.trekgonewild.de/

The Sloane is an older model, that means older version of android so probably more availability of icons.
I'm only surmising now but it's possible the icons maybe device specific and that more are available for the Sloane version of firmware?
I did read something about the broken icons being caused by certain apps for certain devices not being available from amazon app store.
I have a rooted Fire HD 8 that is unusable because of ****ware, which is already disabled etc. Is there a dirty way to turn this tablet into a basic machine? My mom is in chemo and want to give her a Netflix tablet, but this thing is even too slow.
Is it just the bootloader being unlocked thats holding me back from running something like this?

Actually no. You can't unlock the bootloader. If I recall correctly, you have read-write access tought Preloader so you can do a few stuff, but nobody looked deeper.

There is no more performance to squeeze once you disable the bulk of Amazon stuff - it's all down to the "natural" performance of the chip. I have HD7 2014 (ariel), it also feels quite slow today ...
Hi,
Looks like Amazon released two new Fire TV Sticks (Fire TV Stick 3rd Gen and FireTV Stick Lite 1st Gen).
Both devices are running off a MediaTek MT8695D CPU and a PowerVR IMG GE8300 GPU and they come with 1GB of RAM (DDR4).
Apparently, Amazon decided to ship them with Android 9 (FireOS 7).
You can see the full device specs in the "Amazon Device Specification Page":
Fire TV Stick 3rd Gen
Fire TV Stick Lite 1st Gen
I'm wondering if somebody got one of those in their hands and could share with us their experience with them.
The Kernel Source Code can be found here or here (yes, both are the same zip, they just changed the name).
I also mirrored those sources in my github.
Here are some interesting articles that talk about those two devices:

Excellent share @Rortiz2 was looking at these Lite editions on another forum. Do you think may be possible with same fireos patched Linux similar to 4k unlock but with amonet instead of kamakiri? As you say, won't know until kernel is spilled or someone can grab a log of one.

Hey,
Thanks for the video, looks interesting [emoji106]
About amonet/kamakiri I really dunno if somebody will work on that. I'm sure Amazon already patched the exploits we used in tank/mantis and they probably even disabled the USB DL mode (device not visible in bootrom mode). If bootrom is accessible (I really doubt as even some newer tanks have disabled usbdl), finding a new exploit would require a lot of time and knowledge so yeah, i'd say it will be kinda difficult to unlock the thing.
However who knows.. Maybe after 2 years somebody manages to unlock those two devices. Something similar happened with Fire Tablets (Released in 2015-2017 and unlocked in 2018-2019)..
Regards.

Yeah mantis and sloane are better indeed ?
Can anybody confirm, if these devices have the same issue as the cube 2 with some sideloaded app icons not showing?
I wonder if it is a problem just with the cube 2, or fire os 7 in general.

Mmm. Frustrating. I don't understand why they haven't patched this yet. If they want people to use the original launcher, stuff like this needs to stop happening.
This bug alone was enough to make me use a custom launcher for the first time in 5 years as an amazon user, got my cube 2 yesterday to replace my 2nd gen box.
My Post works on FireTV Stick Lite, but amazon Settings and AppStore not available.

Actually its not a bug, if you see the logcats you will find out that on FireOS 7 the Banner icons of apps are downloaded from Amazon Servers and not from the apps.
So if the app is not Present on the store then there will be no icons

That's not 100% the case. Some side loaded apps still show a logo. There is a not very good work around here: https://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-fix-missing-or-broken-icons-for-sideloaded-apps-on-amazon-fire-tv/
I applied this fix to many apps, and it works, but obviously is no good when using apps that check app signature, and at least two apps I use, do this, so they won't work after rebuilding the apk.
Do you think Amazon did this on purpose? To make it sideloaded apps look nasty? Do you know any better fix? For now I'm using your launcher instead.

Hey, is this a link to new Firestick Lite firmware? anyway of extracting boot.img from firmware and patching with magisk then re inserting it patched back into the zip? Or will the bootloader need to be unlocked first and twrp before this is attempted? just a thought

No,
Stock recovery only allows you to install signed zips (replacing something would already break the signature) and you can't manually flash zips in FireTV sticks/boxes (no such option in recovery mode).
Yes, you probably want an unlocked bootloader + TWRP in order to do such thing.

i dont think they will push an oreo/pie update through to mantis 4k . The reason being is that theyve just produced these new crap 3rd Generation Pendants/sticks and also the Lite Edition . So basically instead of upgrading the OS of the best devices (Mantis & Sloane ) they have been greedy and produced more devices to encourage people to spend more .
