Sorry I'm probably being really silly but I can't seem to get them to connect.
Which is the best way to do it via WiFi? I have used playto but I think it's a bit rubbish and had severe limitations.
Any help would be magnificent!

So far I have not been able to find anything on using my ppc as a wifi dongle. I know many say just buy a dongle for your pc but honestly I don't have the money and more over I find it silly that Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, didn't decide to make this an option. My 3G coverage is spotty but I have access to wifi. So I'm pleading with all you wizard programmers on this amazing forum; can someone please find a way to use the ppc as a wifi dongle?
So I've recently been trying to wirelessly tether my g2 to my xbox360 to play live but I constantly get an error back saying my "NAT type is strict".
I can play games anyways that way but it is very slow and laggy and annoying. From what I read up about that error, I need to enable a few ports. Found here: http://www.xboxliveaddicts.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=24450&st=0 and also a few other sources....so question is, is there any way possible to do this on the g2 in place of a router as said in the directions?
Please help, not being able to play live seamlessly is terrible.
I have no idea but I do know that trying to play live through your phone is a terrible idea. The latency on these networks is not what you want when playing online or are the the speeds consistent enough. Trust me when I say this. You are going to pony up and get a real broadband connection for that. If not the lag is going to be extremely unbearable for the most part. The hspa+ network isn't built for it yet. Now true 4g will but that down the road quite a bit.

I agree with the last poster. Latency makes it completely not worth it. I don't know about opening the ports, but I know I used to be able to to use internet connection sharing on a laptop tethered to my windows mobile phone years ago to connect, but it was too slow to play anything. But if you're dead set on trying it, that would probably be your best bet. Tether the phone to a laptop via usb or wifi, then share the connection via ethernet.
I wish it was workable. I'm in the Navy and our computer network blocks many streaming sites so I use my phone and a laptop to watch netflix on slow duty nights. Would be great to be able to play Halo at work that way, but don't see it happening for a very long time.

Actually, anyone who has their data throttled would be their own reason.
With any type of internet connection, there will always be heavy users...
...at least as long as there is porn on the internet.

i second that. i love flash. stupid g1 could never handle it.
hey all - I must be doing something wrong.
I've rooted my DX, and am running the OTA 2.3.15.
using either WiFi Tether or Barnacle I get the same results no matter where I am or what I am doing:
initial connection is good and download speeds approx 500k (occasionally as high as 1Mbs). then after 5 minutes or so... connection slows to a crawl and then finally dies.
nothing I do seems to make any difference at that point. *sometimes* the connection will pick back up for a minute but then it conks out again.
I've tried every combination of Access Control and WEP but to no avail.
I've tried in at least 5 different places - all of which had a strong signal (steady 4 bars) with same results...
I've searched around on the web and on the forums but the signal to noise ratio is too high and I can't seem to find an answer.
any help would be appreciated.
cheers,
b
do you have a windows computer or a mac? i have a mac with both installed, and when i tether with the mac booted, it does the same as you, but when i use windows it tethers no problem...havent heard anyone say its different with the 2 but its been pretty consistent with me that it works on windows and not apple...
I wish I had the answer. But I don't. But I do have the same problem. And I have read the same from others. It really bums me out. I thought it was bc my signal was bad. But you say you have a good signal and it still does it. Dang it! I wonder why some people have no problems and some people have nothing but problems.
I finally got so tired of it I bought Easy Tether and now tether USB. But it is a pain. And not always an option (like if you would like to tether an ipad or something).
Hope someone offers a solution. I am thinking about trading my X bc of this.
yeah - interesting about the Windows vs Mac info... I'll have to try that out.
are other (VZ) phones *not* having this problem?
I did get some kind of response on another forum about command-line tethering working no problem. using terminal I guess. I'll look into it and post it I find anything.
I have a wireless router. its a Zyxel P-661HW-D1. My laptop can connect to it...my PSP can connect to it...my girlfriends IPOD Touch 4 connects to it....but my Ideos X5 will not!!..after days of endless searching the internet it seems that it might be an incompatibility issue. But no one knows for sure. Therefore i decided to try and turn my Laptop into an Access Point to see if my Ideos X5 would connect to that instead. And i can`t figure out how to do that either.....some say android phones cannot work with ad-hoc...but i dont know what that means.
Basically what i wanna know is...is there any way i can get my x5 to connect via zyxel router or laptop?
Or do i need to buy another router?...ive got none others avaliable to do a compatibility test =x

it is simple enough...
hope you have results...
"some say android phones cannot work with ad-hoc" <<< although i don't know something for this....
Yea thanks for the google search...but believe me ive sifted through every tutorial that there possibly is...as well as all the youtube tutorials. It seems easy enough, but to get a smartphone to connect to your laptop AP seems to be another story. But if anyone has successfully managed to get a smartphone to run off a laptop AP , id love to hear what steps you took.
Though as we will see..i dont think anyone will be able to say that they have. Hence proof of the problematic situation i find myself in ^^
Thanks anyway ^^

i don't remember which of the guides i had followed but the previous summer i created a wifi-hotspot with a netbook (with 3g) and at least 3-5 devices where connected simultaneously (other laptops , smartphones) and one of them was mine nokia 5800xm....
so yeah they work and that they are smartphones i think that it doesn't matter...
if it didn't work it might need an extra adjustment that it missed you...
keep trying!

Android will not show Ad-Hoc networks. See Here:
http://szym.net/2010/12/adhoc-wifi-in-android/
Kernel needs to be patched to allow Ad-Hoc connections.

Yes you can. Easily. Google "Connectify"
Connectify only works for windows 7 =x ....ive only got XP =o ....oh well ill have to stick to single player games for now ^^. Thanks.
Try Virtual Router Manager but I think that what you want just works in windows 7 because it needs a service that exists only on win7/win2008.
For about 60usd you should be able to get a tp-link 1043 which is one of the best routers to buy if you do not care for gigabit-wan and for 5Ghz (I suppose you do not care).
I know, you still need to have the money for that, I am just providing an alternative solution for your problem.
Thought others might like to know, I was able to follow the guide below to turn my Alienware Alpha into a wifi access point, then I connect my NVIDIA Shield directly to its access point and play games streamed directly from my Alpha over wifi without a router as the middleman. I tried this because my Alpha isn't connected directly to my usual router via Ethernet - it uses WiFi, but having the Gamestreaming go wirelessly to router then wirelessly to Shield didn't perform well (ie two wireless hops).
http://www.7tutorials.com/how-turn-your-windows-81-laptop-wifi-access-point
Note: I didn't bother with the second step to provide internet access to the connected devices (in this case my Shield), because I want my Shield focused purely on streaming in this case. Interestingly enough, it seemed like my Alpha was able to still access the internet via WiFi to my usual router, even while providing its own access point. Performance is great and I'm able to wirelessly enjoy my games around the house now. (I know I'm so behind on this, but didn't have a good enough graphics card until my Alpha)
And in case anyone is wondering, I am loving my little Alienware Alpha - it's a nice gaming machine in a small console form factor. It didn't initially have a driver that supported gamestreaming, but it must have gotten an update because it started working.

i tried this but after a few minutes connected, my windows 8.1 just crash (blue screen).
Blue screen would make me think a driver/hardware problem, but hard to say - it's possible acting as a wireless hotspot might stress the hardware in ways the designers may not have expected since most people don't use their Windows PC's as hotspots.
Update: Disregard this, it does seem to still be working, so I may have been having other issues before.
Also, I've been meaning to update that I don't think doing this method works anymore... fortunately, streaming seems to work better now so that it can survive two wireless hops in my case. I would like to get a more direct way working again, but not sure exactly what the problem is - let us know if anyone knows anything that could have changed in the protocol that might be causing problems for this use case.

It is still working for me using this method. Although the 5ghz network streams great using a hotspot seems to be significantly better on 2.4ghz only lower end devices like my jxd 7800.

You're right - it still works. I must have been having some kind of other problems before. So I got worried the new login thing where they want you to login to stream your games might be interfering. (Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, haven't tried all that yet)
In any case, it was working great again.

Can not find pc
Hi,
I was not able to make this work - i created wirtual hotspot on my msi ge70e laptop and connected with my shield tablet. Either shield hub or moonlight can not find pc.. But (if it is sign of anything) i am able to run local splashtop (laptop is not connected to the internet), so i would guess that some kind of lan connection must be working between the two.
Any ideas would be appreciated, thank you
