[Q] WiFi Tethering Woes... - Droid X General

hey all - I must be doing something wrong.
I've rooted my DX, and am running the OTA 2.3.15.
using either WiFi Tether or Barnacle I get the same results no matter where I am or what I am doing:
initial connection is good and download speeds approx 500k (occasionally as high as 1Mbs). then after 5 minutes or so... connection slows to a crawl and then finally dies.
nothing I do seems to make any difference at that point. *sometimes* the connection will pick back up for a minute but then it conks out again.
I've tried every combination of Access Control and WEP but to no avail.
I've tried in at least 5 different places - all of which had a strong signal (steady 4 bars) with same results...
I've searched around on the web and on the forums but the signal to noise ratio is too high and I can't seem to find an answer.
any help would be appreciated.
cheers,
b

do you have a windows computer or a mac? i have a mac with both installed, and when i tether with the mac booted, it does the same as you, but when i use windows it tethers no problem...havent heard anyone say its different with the 2 but its been pretty consistent with me that it works on windows and not apple...

I wish I had the answer. But I don't. But I do have the same problem. And I have read the same from others. It really bums me out. I thought it was bc my signal was bad. But you say you have a good signal and it still does it. Dang it! I wonder why some people have no problems and some people have nothing but problems.
I finally got so tired of it I bought Easy Tether and now tether USB. But it is a pain. And not always an option (like if you would like to tether an ipad or something).
Hope someone offers a solution. I am thinking about trading my X bc of this.

yeah - interesting about the Windows vs Mac info... I'll have to try that out.
are other (VZ) phones *not* having this problem?

I did get some kind of response on another forum about command-line tethering working no problem. using terminal I guess. I'll look into it and post it I find anything.

WiFi: Conected but VERY slow

I'm pretty happy with my new HTC Hero, but I'm having a lot of trouble with the WiFi connection. I connects fine and shows "good" or "excelent" signal strength on my home network. However the speed is very slow and if I go to Android Market it loads the different apps very slowly an looses connection often: It says "No connection" and I press the "Retry" button...). It is not just a problem i Android Marked. Loading pages in the browser, facebook etc. is extremely slow when on WiFi. When I'm using EDGE everything is A LOT faster and I don't get "A network error has occured. Retry or cancel...etc.".
I have tried different settings on my access point, but nothing seems to help. I have (tempoarily) disabled encryption, tried swiching channels, using B instead og G setting, and manually setting: Gateway, DNS etc... In the end it got a bit frustrating so I tried a factory reset. But WiFi is still very slow. If you have any suggestions to what the problem might be I would be very grateful.
I had a similar problem with my AP (D-Link DIR 655) and tried to set it to use the same communications setup as another AP that worked properly. Whatever I did with encryption, keys and channels made no difference on my AP. The solution on this AP was to set it to 802.11g only (it was b+g+n), and it has worked fine since.
I do however suspect that there may be some serious issues lurking in the linux kernel that is used on the hero (2.6.27). Wifi was a nightmare on that release with notebooks too, and core parts of the wifi-stack has been replaced since. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a significant improvement in wifi-performance whenever there's an Android release that include a 2.6.30 or later kernel.
I have been having the same issues but my wifi didnt work with the browser, or youtube. I downloaded Opera mini and wifi works fine. With factory browser i can go to google and it will load and search but once i click on links found it hangs and wont connect. I am so frustrated my sim is going back into my iphone 3gs until an update is released this sucks big time
It is a bit disappointing if this is a general issue, but I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one with this type of problem.
Maybe this could also be a HTC-issue? I remember my HTC Tytn II where there was a slider where you could choses between "performance" or "battery saving". I remember that I couldn't get the WiFi to run properly unless I set it to highest performance. I consumed more power but it worked with this setting.
On my Hero, the HSDPA connection is for some reason faster than my ADSL2+ (24Mbps) connection. Rather odd..
Same here. The 3G/EDGE is a lot faster than my 20 Mbit ADSL. It makes no sense
Why does it take so long to make a connection to my router via wifi?
This can sometimes take 10 - 15 minutes before I have a connection.
With my windows mobile device this takes only a few seconds.
I'm experiencing the same issue on my Hero (with updated HTC firmware). I've also tried playing around with my routers settings to no avail. My Hero is basically useless for browsing on WIFI.
I'm curious, does anyone running an alternative rom experience this? If not I may look into rooting my phone..
Root your phone and do this
echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_timestamps
It will fix it.

you've had 57 posts and dont know what rooting is;p aha (not trying to be a ****, just found that funny:])
when you root your phone you gain root access and can do just about anything, like install apps that need root access! there are guides in the dev section on how to, and if you do a search there is a thread on what root allows you to do!
i dont know if that command will fix your problem though, sorry!

I've been a "windows mobile" user for a long time.
I know what "root access" is in the general Unix environment.
But I don't really know how it works on the Android OS.
I'm more of a Windows guy.
It's my first time messing on Android, I got tired of Windows Mobile.

Just my humble opinion. This is a problem that should be fixed by htc.
If rooting fixes it it's good, but it can't be a requirement to get it working properly.
I mean you buy a phone with wifi, you expect it to be as fast as your provider is... Getting less is just not getting what you paid for.
Has anyone mailed HTC about this problem? I hardly ever use wifi but tried it today
and indeed my hsdpa is lot's faster than my 20mbit connection @ home.
Help us pleaseeee

That pretty much cut the speed in half for me.
Seriously the wifi issue is a big problem for me. I don't have a 3g unlimited plan.
Basically when i activate the wifi i start a application like update weather or check a webpage or update tweets, it works then connection drop and i can't connect to anything.
I have to deactivate wifi then reactivate to get like 40 seconds surfing and downloading apps on the market.
IS everyone having the same wifi problem ?
It happened on every access point not just the one at my place.
Please help me, is it my phone that has a hardware problem ?
frem
you gotta think of it this way...
most people who dont have problems arnt gunna make it to this thread because there not searching for it! So your mostly gunna get replys saying "same here"
so im guessing most people dont have this problem.. although it could be a specific rom on a specific carrier or something... see if you have anything in common with other people with this problem, if not, maybe it is hardware
WiFi channels
Have you tried changing the wifi channel in your router settings in case there is interferance with a nearby router on the same channel? Although you would experience slow wifi on any wifi device (laptops)..but worth checking.
I've just done a speedtest on my phone using the speedtest.net app and do get just over half the download speed on my phone (5-6mbps) opposed to my pc (wired 9-10mbps) and laptop (wireless 9-10mbps). So knowing my wireless is set up correctly, it does show some loss in speed with the hero. See how much of a loss you get?
Adam
Thank you for your reply. I think i figured it out. I am at the countryside right now and im connnected on a diferent acess point and it's working perfectly i'm actually writing this post in WiFi mode on the hero. So the problem is from the other access point i tested. i already tried changing the Channel number. I use a french provider that use access points called "freebox"
FYI the problem with the hero and some wifi access points is well known and is being forwarded to htc by Vodafone.

Htc said that they are working on it..

"Free" WiFi Hotspot Stopped Working

Soon after I got my phone, I used the ##778 reprogramming trick to enable "free" usb tethering. (PDAnet would crash my Vista laptop every 10 minutes.)
After the 2.2 OTA, I've been using the same trick to enable "free" hotspot through my Inc. (No root necessary!) I was able to access email and surf the web and after 1.5 months, I never once saw the MBC feature added to my bill.
Until 3 days ago, everything was working great. I would turn on the hotspot, my laptop would connect to the network and I was able to access the web.
Since then, my Inc creates a network and my laptop connects to the network, but it never connects to the internet. (The little globe icon doesn't appear. If that makes sense...) I checked ##778 settings and everything is fine.
I'm running stock kernel and 2.2 OTA with LauncherPro. I have ~200 apps installed currently. BUT none of that should matter because it worked fine with all these apps before.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Would the app that works for rooted phones work for me? I've been trying to avoid rooting my phone because, I'll end up spending WAY TOO MUCH time playing with ROM's and such. (It's inevitable, but I'm holding out as long as I can. Until then, I'll continue to read this forum to stay current.)
Mine still works fine - Root it jackass (jk) your phone will literaly be 100 times better
My co-worker used to connect his BB to my network, but now it won't even connect. It detects the network with 4 bars, but he gets an error connecting. (Probably because it won't detect an internet connection.)
This is bothering me a lot. I have a feeling it could be a hardware issue.
I got a wireless router yesterday for my workplace now so I don't really need the feature anymore (it's so much faster than VZW's network!), but I'd like to able to use it in emergency situations when I can't find an open network on the road.

+1 Root. Bro it will honestly take you less than 10 minutes to root your device and install wireless tether and you'll be off and running. If your timid you don't have to do anything more than that. All you have to do to revert is flash the stock image from your sd card to unroot.

[Q]WiFi Problem when Dowloading

Im having some problems with the wi-fi connection. When it first conects, everything goes ok, but when I start to download anything, the connection just stops responding, even tough it looks like conected. What should I do?
I'm having the same problem and couldn't find the solution, did any solve the problem?
Wifi problem on MS2
After months of researching and suffering the pain I still have not got a full solution for my MS2. My wifi problem is that it connects well, great wifi speed on my home network. But after a couple of minutes there's no more internet access even though it shows that its connected. I chanced upon this link laptopmag.com/review/cell-phones/motorola-droid-2.aspx?page=4 where it had the same problem brought up. It had a solution/fix which I do not want to use though. Further information can be found on the droidforums link on that page. What I have been doing all along is the same as what the guys at laptopmag has been doing, just reconnect whenever internet is down. Irritating yeah, but don't really have any other option..
Hope someone does have a proper solution :X
In addition to the sporadic troubles loading some sites with Flash elements, we had a much more persistent problem maintaining Wi-Fi connectivity. On three different routers, the Droid 2 would connect and then, after a few minutes, would continue reporting that it was connected but stop downloading data. The solution to the problem, once you notice it, is to disconnect from the router then reconnect, but that is a huge hassle.
Our original Droid experienced the same Wi-Fi problem so many times that we eventually gave up and resolved to use 3G only. However, after searching through several Droid forums and finding dozens of posts from other users who experienced the same problem on first-gen Droids and Droid Xs, we found a possible solution that seems to have worked with the Droid 2. After we changed the settings on our 802.11n router from mixed mode to 802.11g only, we did not experience the problem again, though we had to operate all of our computers on the slower 802.11g speed, which is unacceptable.

I installed the BlurLess GB rom and the problem is now gone.
Btw, my router @ home is G only, so the solution posted did not apply for me.

[Q] Has anyone successfuly gotten their A500 to work with Barnacle?

(Yes, I've searched...)
I see several people "working" in Ad-hoc mode. But none of them actually directly reference Barnacle. I've been messing with theis for over a week, and can't seem to get this figured out, or if it's a lost cause, and I need to get a new phone.
I've got a Sony X10 Mini Pro- infrastructure mode is still a ways off, and I'm running the new Taboonay 3.2 on the Acer. I have Ad-Hoc, I can connect, if I manually specify an IP- DHCP never connects.
There is no surfage, though. I can't even ping the IP of my phone. I show connected, get the up and down arrows, like it's connected, but no throughput.
Has anyone actually gotten this to work? Do you think it's a barnacle problem, or is it something I can tweak in the Acer?
I have the same question. I havent been able to get this to work.
Barnacle worked for me in the past.they did a update then no more worked. I switched to wifi tether.and I think its better.I even donated money to the other.
Sent them several emails with not one single reply.kinda sad but its life.
works for me from myn my samsung intercept.
Question can you connect to your phone using another devive like a laptop?
Does your acer even see the barnacle in the wifi settings?
If not make sure the adhoc patch is installed it think when i went to taboonay i also had to reinstall the patch.
Yes, Barnacle does work with a lappy, and yes, the tab does see the barnacle ad-hoc, it even connects- if given a static IP. Just not able to negotiate a network connection- no ping, destination host unreachable.
Try wifi tether.I had the same issue .wifi tether is faster as well and free also.
My phone is x10 mini running on cyanogenmod 7 2.0.7.
i am using barnacle tether on it and it becomes a ad-hoc hotspot. THe problem is my iconia a500 has issues working with the connection. I can see the hotspot (i have changed the wpa supplicant file to that of xoom available) so i get a *before the name but as soon as i enter the password of wep and click on connect button,it shows connecting and then obtaining ip address and that never stops. on clicking on that it shows that the signal is poor and decibel = -1. What the ****!
Please, can anyone help me out here?

erica_renee,
I am so glad that you posted this. Even happier that I remembered it. Today around 4:30pm my dsl died. Called in and it is something that effects my little area. And of course they are working on it. Funny how the phone still works, but anyway... This was especially annoying because a friend gave to me a HTC Aria with a cracked screen. I'd just repaired it, started rooting it and installing CM7. The timing was typical.
I was using Barnacle to tether my pc, a tablet and another phone. What's worse I am in an AT&T Edge only area. So it was PAINFUL at best. I finally remembered your suggestion, that you mentioned a speed improvement, and also that I had installed WiFiTether after I read that.
Well I ain't gonna lie and say that I was able to browse on one device while I netflix'd on another while downloading on the other... But I can easily be getting something from the market on one of the devices and still manage to browse on my pc. Which is a terrific improvement to what Barnacle was doing for me.
Barnacle was like dial up on a bad day. WiFiTether is easily twice as fast as the old dial up ever was. Maybe more.
So you really saved me from going nuts. Thanks so much! And I'll go ahead and say thanks for my Brother in town. If that hadn't worked I would have been camped out on his lawn modding a phone...

Painful Tether/Hotspot speed

Ive been trying to use tethering to my laptop and its to the point of unusable, im getting 56k speedsi if that while a speed test from my phone im getting 15-30 down and 2-10 up.
I'm using wifi hotspot ive tried both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz. I have also tried the USB Tether but my windows 10 doesnt like it for some reason. Im on verizon with a shared Data plan that includes the Hotspot feature. anyone have any ideas
Thanks
No idea, but I've tethered to a Windows 7 laptop. Performance was good, so I never bothered to check the speed.

I am having same issue. I use T-mobile and my OnePlusOne never had this issue. I would go to gym and just turn on my hotspot and watch Netflix without issue in the past. With the MXPE, it's like being on 56k modem. Anyone else having this issue?
I tether almost everyday due to terrible speeds at work. I'm on Verizon unlimited and I do not experience any speed issues. I unlocked but I made no changes for tether as that worked out of the box
I tried Bluetooth tethering which works fine without any issue so it's not exactly a carrier issue. I also verify with t-mobile that they didn't turn of my hotspot feature by accident.
I have the same issue on TMO US. With my Nexus 5, I had fast, dependable tethering. Now with the MXPE my tethering is painfully slow and flaky. Not good at all when on the road.
I'm having the same issue. I just upgraded from a Droid MAXX that had fantastic tethering speeds, and now on my new MXPE it's like being on dialup. Has anyone come up with a solution? I've been loving the phone so far, but tethering is too important to me and I won't be able to keep the phone if I can't figure it out.
I've had this happen twice. A reboot fixed it both times.
I've had this happen more than twice... Hoping the devs can come up with a fix

I'm on VZW ULDP and mine can be painfully slow at times as others have indicated. Usually a reboot will rectify it. But that's not really convenient. I have it set up to start tether automatically when I start my car (bluetooth connection activated via tasker) so I can automatically get traffic to work or home on my z ultra.

I had my first tethering session yesterday. I am on Verizon. A customer I was meeting with needed email access on his Surface Pro and there was no free WiFi where we met. I went in and setup a portable WiFi hotspot. We were both quite impressed with the speed. Keep in mind, this is the only time I have tried it but there were no issues.
hello i just got my moto x pure and i was trying to tether everything seems to be ok until i try use internet in my macbook and is not trasmitting data, same thing happened with nexus 6 i found that when lte it stops transfering data, this is so stupid this is an unlocked phone and it wont let me tether?????? wtf........im using simple mobile unlimited 4g LTE ,i was using an Asus ZenFone 2 and tether without issues, thanks.
This happens almost every time I use the hotspot. Rebooting usually fixes it - temporarily. I'm really hoping that marshmallow has better hotspot performance on the MXP
I get this issue... It's not exactly slow speeds, more like a spotty connection. I use Remote Desktop to do my work, which should still technically run smoothly (albeit slowly) on a 56k connection. I am connecting to a Windows NT server, so I am only using 16-bit graphics quality to reduce the strain on my bandwidth. We didn't even have anything that much faster than T1 at that time, so I can't imagine a Windows NT server running slowly on a modem connection. I noticed a couple things that were strange, so I think there may be settings on my phone causing it but I cannot be sure.
The connection fast when I test the tethering at home, but when I am out the connection constantly drops. I cannot even get a stable connection to my server to do any work. This is not when I am in the car moving from cell tower to cell tower, this is if I am at a place without WiFi, such as my dentist's office.
Chrome gets stuck at "Resolving host..." when trying to visit any websites. This would lead me to believe it is a DNS error, however this does not explain the connection instability with Remote Desktop, and using the address's IP address does not seem to fix this, strangely enough.
I am on a VZW grandfathered unlimited plan, using the TruPure ROM. I did not want to move away from stock, but I did it in an attempt to fix my tethering issues. So far nothing has worked.
