Possible solution for cracked back camera glass - LG G6 Questions and Answers

Like an increasingly numerous part of the G6 userbase my back camera glass protector cracked for a totally stupid reason (used the flash as a flashlight gor 10 minutes) and I was stuck with a device LG refused to repair claiming it was a physical problem which was my fault. I didn't want to pay 150$ for a simple lens change but at the same time I don't know how long it would take for us to be able to buy a replacement glass online.
So what I did is that i took of the broken glass(with a very small screwdriver) in a way similar to a video called ''DIY Replacing camera lens on LG G5'' on youtube (sorry I can't post links). While I couldn't find any replacement glass, I knew Staples were offering to install a liquid glass protector on any screen or glass surface of your choice so I went there, paid 35$ and got the guy there to put the liquid protector on the screen as well as on the camera lenses themselves. The picture quality isn't at all affected by the protector. Now I'm waiting for a dbrand skin that will replace all the space left to fill. I'll try to post some pictures of how it looks by now so you guys have an idea of the result.

Maybe you don't believe it. But the camera glass cracking isn't an isolated problem. I'm glad you didn't have the problem, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist...

Only problem with this is that your ip68 protection goes out the window but i guess thats the trade off instead of sending it in and getting it repaired. I wonder if you can get the liquid glass protector installed on the back camera glass to possibly prevent it from cracking in the first place? I might have to give it a go.

Oh I do know of, and believe the instances of lens breakage I've seen mentioned.
But it's by no means prevalent. You will see more people here posting complaints than you will people saying they don't have the same problem; that's the nature of places like this.
And it then looks to some like it's a bigger issue than it actually is. Although to each individual their problem is a real problem for them.
I've seen plenty of posts here complaining of this issue and the absurd lengths some are going to trying to remedy it. But no one seems to be complaining in the right place - LG themselves.

Unfortunately that's also often true.

I've had my LG G6 for just over a week, camera glass smashed while in my pocket, using a Spigen case that gives 2mm inset for the camera. Seems like there's a few people with this problem.

Mine broke on day 12. Spigen case absolutely no other damage to the phone. No drops. I would alternate putting it in back and front pockets and would sit either way. I don't know if something wedged in front of the lens or just pressure from bending when sitting may have caused the issued, but I do not think I was careless with my phone.

That's why I am getting a couple lens glass protector, just in case....

Another lens protector broken here. Absolutely no reason for it to break. I have never dropped it. It is never placed in the pocket with anything else.

I would personally like to thank all the nay sayers for shutting up while this has become a wide spread problem. In the beginning they were more annoying than mosquitoes at a summer picnic.

I cut a leftover screen protector from an old phone to cover my camera glass until I find a permanent solution. It's ugly but doesn't affect photos...so far.

You say widespread, but yet the extreme vast majority have no issues. Hundreds of thousands of G6 around the world, but still a very small minority of users experiencing this issue, maybe a few dozen reported cases so far, possibly in the low hundreds counting for unreported? Still seems like an Q/C issue on LG's end in combination with user error, not the epidemic you would make it seem to be.

It is widespread enough now for LG and Tmobile to only NOW recognize it as an issue. Its NOT user error, its unequivocally QC as I said from the beginning, so please just stop.

CDMA Hero Bugs and Manufacturer Defects

I'm starting this thread as a central database for CDMA Hero owners to share defects and bugs in Hardware and Software.
My apologies if this has been addressed else-where.
Found with my Girlfriend's and my "with Google" Heros that we both have a noticeable amount of dust under the screen (glass). I thought this was addressed with rev. 2 of the phone?
Anyone one else with the same issue?
paint on case is VERY easy to chip...
I agree the finish seems a little delicate. I've been using a cheap hard plastic case since I got mine in dec. Helps alot with wear and tear, and isn't too bulky or hard to get out of my pocket.
i agree with the paint issue.
my end button is totally red not silver and red
I had a dust issue with my first (unbranded).
The first thing I did with my replacement (with google) hero was to apply an invisible shield to it. I have not noticed any dust under the screen whatsoever.
Also, although it isn't exactly pretty, I found while applying the invisible shield that it did not cover the gap between screen and button pad. As a quick fix to this I cut a thin piece of invisible shield material that was left over and applied it over the crack/screen protector/button pad protector. Just for some extra protection.
For shocks, I have the phone in the HTC silicone case. My phone has taken a number of falls/skids across the ground and stuff and this combo has protected it completely.
Edit:
Almost forgot, my original also seemed to develop a wear mark on the metal button pad finish. It was as if a part of the layer had rubbed off and tarnished in a circular pattern.
about the dust under the screen...
i contacted htc about before. the person who i emailed replied to me saying that htc has a permanent fix for the problem, so you can send it in and they'll replace/clean the screen and apply some fix to it. catch is, you have to pay for S&H and you'll go without a phone for a bit

I have a ridiculous amount of dust in the lower left hand corner of my screen... so much so that part of the screen isn't visible anymore. Do you think Sprint would just let me exchange it for a new one? Or would I still have to go through HTC?

well i e-mailed htc about this twice. the first time they said that if the dust got bad enough, i could send it to HTC and they'd repair it. they also said this:
I understand how frustrating it can be for dust to collect under the screen of your device. We have recently learned that Sprint has a process in place to resolve this issue. Please contact Sprint for the location of your nearest Sprint Service and Repair facility. They are equipped to clean your device, and in doing so will be able to keep the issue from recurring in the future. I apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.

That's great to hear! Nice to know it's not like my Mogul was. They just kept giving me broken phones until I bought my hero....
I had heard about the dust problem before, and was glad that I didn't have that problem yet... After reading this thread, I decided to look again.... Now I do have dust in the bottom right
It seems to me that the problem is dust entering between the keypad and the screen, and then getting up underneath of the digitizer which doesn't seem to be against the LCD, which is strange, I think. Most handhelds I've taken apart have the digitizer glued around the edges directly to the LCD. Thank god that HTC and Sprint are actually addressing this problem. If someone does know how and where this seal is applied, I'd love to know. I might be taking mine back before too long, and I always would like to know what they're going to do beforehand.

Seriously you guys should have no problem exchanging that phone in warranty without TEP IF you take it to the shop and they cant resolve your dust issue they will ship you a remanufactured phone.

This is 100% inaccurate. I'm a Sprint tech and there is no process in place for repairing Hero's with dust in the screen. Sure I can take your phone apart and blow the dust out, but it will come back.

At least it isn't near as bad as the Touch Pro. My buddy and I both had one; he still has his... His volume buttons literally fell off, and all of the chrome stripping is held on with scotch tape. The sliding screen has a slight swivel to it. And, thanks to Microsoft, all of his texts are from 1016.
Actually, I'm considering taking my Hero apart and trying to figure out a fix on my own. I think I'll wait just a little longer... just to make sure nothing fails and I can't take it back. Or, is there anywhere I can buy those black stickers for the screw-heads?
I'm surprised none of you guys have seen this yet.

Interesting, I loved my Touch Pro, the only flaking or issues with the aesthetics I had were from where it met pavement once...there's also a .cab file your friend can download that will fix the date issue...I'd post a link but I'm not sure of XDA's linking policies to other sites, just google ".cab fix for touch pro sms date," it's one of the first results.
As far as bugs and manufacturer defects with my Hero go, I've had the phone for a little over a month now and haven't anything to report...it does lag a little at times but I've yet to find a rooting process that works for my Hero for whatever reason, it's the newest version with the "with Google" branding. The "one touch root" or whatever it was titled from unlockr didn't work, nor did the one I found on android forums.
I didn't get stuck in a bootloader or anything for either process, it's simply that neither one had any affect; I did follow both process to a "T." I'll get around to trying the tutorial I found on here (XDA) one day when I have time, although I must say, I kind of prefer the hacks and tricks of WinMo at this point.

Screen glass movment

Has anyone noticed if you press on the glass that it moves? Is this normal?
It seems far more pronounced at the top left of the glass screen.

To true getting tired i need a holiday, but anyway what i notice is when i put my back on and press down on the back to slide it up i can hear the screen creaking as if is popping up and down on the glue
i think its a joke how the forum seems to have a "it will do" attitude. I think its pathetic how these things are built! I shouldnt have to pay £400 for something thats built poorly. Yes the screen not being flush with the plastic or the screen moving or making creaking sounds may "not bother you" but it will when three months down the line things stop working like the phone speaker which has happened to a few already. Im sure by then because they wont see this as a MAJOR fault dell will just say..you dropped it and broke it.
Need a petition because I have real OCD with this phone and i want it PERFECT!.

Nothing will ever be perfect, what a childish request. Considering how thin the Streak is, of coarse it will wear under any semi-hard conditions like sliding the battery cover on if not held properly. You may even be flexing the screen on accident in your pocket or while using.

No I dont even put it in my pocket. Iv kept it at home in its little case, reason being I use a normal phone when out and about untill I get 2.2 on there.
Fair enought I dont want it perfect but its still a ISSUE...it wont be untill people realise that all these phones mess up in a years time due to this little issue. The side can only get more and more raised it wont fix itself magically.
Its like you going to buy a brand new car and finding the front bumper is slightly out of line...are you going to just put up with it?
Its even been mentioned on some forums as maybe the reason its not released in the US. I mean people over the pond dont have the ****ty "it'll do attitude" they have the "if I dont get what I pay for I will sue" attitude which a much more prefer!
Its a HUGE defect for the screen to be dodgey and the top plastic half to be pealing off!
How are people on their 4th streak? What the hell are you doing to them?
I've had my streak for about 2-3 weeks now. No creaks, no loose fittings, no non-working speakers. not sure why i'm bothering listing things as everything about this phone is brilliant (except the camera )
Best build quality of any phone i've ever had. Good job dell i say.
Its inevitable that a phone so big and so thin will get bent and twisted and will wear as a result. With regards to the quality issue its mostlikely due to the mass production of the phone as cheaply as possible. Although I agree the quality of the streak is fantastic it's also inevitable that some will be defective
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
No problems here thus far all good
I've just watched that video where the streak is taken apart and i've come to the conclusion that its probably the glass and screen moving as one inside the case on the back. Hopefully this is the case as it would mean that the glue between the glass and screen is fully intact and could also explain the cracking the other poster was experiencing.
what the people with the "good" phones dont seem to understand is the difference between wear and just coming out of the box. These problems with the screen being flush have been since opening the box and not after use...
In a previous thread I stated how overpriced I thought the dell polyurethane case was and it is however one unexpected side effect it seems to have is the way it grips the streak seems to strengthen the device as it adds an extra rigidity to it so and it will be less likely to flex.If you carry yours in your pocket I would suggest you consider the case as it does provide protection from potential movement and flex

[Q] Screen Scratched?

So I just noticed a decent sized scratch on my fascinates screen.
It's in the middle of the screen, and I can feel it with a fingernail. The phone spends all day in my pocket, and I baby it, so I'm surprised. Never been dropped or anything.
Though I know it's morally ambigious, I was thinking about returning it to verizon under the guise of faulty GPS/not getting a lock so I could get a new one with a clean screen.
Anyone know of any reason this wouldn't work?
If I do this or not though, will def be getting a screen protector.
reasons it wouldn't work would be if the rep there knows the gps problem affects all fascinate units so they may only offer swapping to a different model. Also, the devilish giggling sounds you make as you try to scam them might give you away.
good luck!
Worth a shot. I'll have to return to stock and see. Nothing really to lose beyond having to re root if they say no.

On a related subject, whats the best screen protector? I would like one that covers the entire front. Also, I thought these screens were hard to scratch except with sand? I have no scratches yet.
I find this hard to believe....these phones have gorilla glass....same as iphone.....go google it and watch some youtube videos of people stabbing their phones. I will never use crappy screen protector again.....i swear they are a scam. Just my two cents.

umm teeharding... gorilla glass isn't indestructable :/ I'd like to see a youtube video of someone rubbing sand paper on a display and then we'll talk.
how are screen protectors a scam when they tend to the need for which you bought them? sure we can say they are costly, but thats just one of those inequalities in life we should learn to deal with in a capitalistic society. :/
I can assure you that it is possible to scratch Gorilla Glass, as I did it.
What exactly did it? Couldn't tell you, but I was careless and overconfident in the GG, and had it in my pocket with keys and my headphones, and it was scratched up in a few weeks, though only one scratch was deep enough to feel with a fingernail.
Since I've gotten the new phone I decided to order the realook screen protector from amazon, and it has its own pocket, free of anything else. besides my wallet (leather, no metal or edges).
Trust me, I don't need to google the greatness of GG, I've had my own real life test done, and it failed. Phone was never dropped or handled roughly.
Yikes. Glad I got an Invisible Shield installed. So how is the new GPS? I'm considering returning mine as I also have GPS issues. It scared me when I read that it may be a hardware issue on these forums today.

If its a known issue with the unit it specifically means they will NOT exchange the device. And def not for another one, given its the 1st one.
You will be told to wait for them to release an update that "fixes" the issue, and at which point, it doesn't, THEN the device is swapped out, for another identical model.
You can try returning the phone at that point, and depending who you get or what not, they may waive the restock fee, especially if you point out that you're returning a phone for an issue thats CLEARLY not your problem, and mention that the rep who sold you the phone didn't point it out.
@ [OP] How did the realooks do for you?

got c50 nexus 7 should i get a replacement?

Hey all I ordered met nexus 7 about 2 weeks ago and I love it. I do have a slight screen lift issue thought. Not as bad as others that had posted but enough to bother me.
I was reading up on the forums and how people were saying there different models (date manufactured). So I decide to see what number I got. I thought I would at least have a c60 or c70 model but I noticed a c50. I thought c60 was the earliest model?
What do u guys suggest? I during?I'd noticed that when I got it that there was 2 things of security tape on it (very overlapping so it only looked like 1but there was 2) and that there was 2 fingerprints on the copper heat tape next to the battery.
Does anyone know if the c80 fixed the screen issue for sure. Also how is Asus return work out. I had to RMA a bad motherboard to them before and it was the worse RMA I ever did.
Thanks guys and lmk what u think
Hi mate,
Well if it's got screen lift, that's a good enough reason to send it back. There is always the chance that you will shatter the screen if you tighten the screws up......
Yeah, I thought that C60 was the earliest model that they made. Obviously not. Looks like you were unlucky getting such an early model, this late on.
There are still some problems with the C80 lot, but not as common as they were in the previous versions. Can't you return it to the shop, or Google that you bought it from? You'll still be within the 28 days return. I was out and they still accepted it back without any hassle (Tesco UK)
I got a c5 model as well. I've had it for almost 3 weeks now. Was pretty upset at first when I got it because it was actually my second replacement from the Google store. Everything was fine until recently when I started to have the touch screen issues and the headphone out only outputs the right channel. Contacted Google again a couple days ago and they are gonna let me swap it again.
At this point, I don't care when it was made as long as it has no issues (major issues).

Getting a newer SSN doesn't guarantee that you won't have issues. The screen lift is minor compared to screen flicker, bad pixels, etc.

The first part is correct. Although it seems that many units have been opened and checked for obvious cases of separation, nothing has been done to solve the problem. ASUS has been rather curiously leaving screws off the left side recently, but that has not been a permanent solution for most users.
As for your statement that screen lift is minor, I don't know why you're still spreading this misinformation.
By no means is it guaranteed to cause problems, but there have been many reports of lifted displays cracking during normal use. Although the likelihood of this happening is unclear at this point, we know for a fact that this flaw has potentially serious consequences, and that ASUS will not accept responsibility under any circumstances.
Cracked screen... will ASUS fix it?
Nexus 7 screen cracks easily
The "it's broken already" thread
I have not heard anything about Google's coverage of this issue, aside from erica_renee's screen cracking right away, seen here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1858400&page=4
They handled her case generously, but that was a freshly unboxed unit so maybe they made an exception. Also, she said that her unit didn't even have lift, so I don't mean to imply that the cause of her broken glass was screen lift. It could have been an anomaly rather than a widespread flaw.
Although it would be useful to know definitively how Google intends to handle a lifted screen cracking within warranty, it's infinitely more likely that you'll be taken care of if you purchased from the Play store. I think that if your lift is truly minor and you're going to be dealing with Google as a possible safety net, tolerating this flaw is an acceptable risk. But you'll have to make up your own mind.

Sales of the Nexus 7 will soon reach record number for a Android tablet, and all you could find me is 3 links then call it "many reports of lifted dispalys"?
Pxlitup...I see you're up and early trying to put fear into people.

Those links are focused and informative. Posting any more than three would look cluttered.
But since you asked nicely, here are some more links worth considering.

All these threads are all sounding alike. "How many returns have you made" or "screen lift this" or "screen lift that"
Pxlitup, are you on some kind of "screen lift" campaign? Dude just buy a different tablet and move on. You're in every thread talking about screen lift even if the OP has no intention of talking about this subject.

pxlitup been on a mission from the screen separation gods to preach the word of screen separation on every thread.
I went on my own mission to find a perfectly flat screen. After the 5th N7 at various Walmart and staples I've came to the conclusion no N7 will be perfectly flat they all have a slight lift towards the center one the left side.

As everyone can see, this is the third time you've confronted me like this. And your tone has been increasingly hostile.
Ironically, this grudge you're nursing began with me helping you to inspect your own unit. You discovered that you have screen lift thanks to my help, and you've been popping up to berate me ever since. I don't know where this hostility came from, since our first exchange spanned the course of a single page and I was nothing but friendly throughout. Here is the final post of our first interaction:

Don't mistake my motives. I'm glad that you are happy with your purchase.
I'm only notifying you of the possible risks, which I believe warrant a mention since they do exceed the concerns of normal wear and tear.
Remember that internationally this tablet can cost much more than you or I paid for it. It's important for people to be able to make an informed decision about whether or not to purchase it, and you being honest about your screen inspection, even though you think I'm being OCD, was very helpful in that regard. You would be surprised at how many people believe facts are subjective when tech company loyalties come into play.
Hopefully your tablets won't give you any trouble. Your lift is certainly not as severe as many of the units from July that are still going strong.

I don't know how we got here, but here we are. If you do decide to continue doing this, I will report you.
For anyone interested, here is the photo you originally uploaded to prove that your screen was flawless. The very minor separation has been circled.
And here is a record of your budding fascination with me, pulling my pigtails and so forth. You can edit your posts if you want, but it's all there.
Just to clarify, having c50 or c60 doesn't mean that it's going to be faulty. My third n7 (first two were f...) is c60 and flawless so far. Screen is perfectly aligned and I don't have any ghosting nor other problems.
My 16gb N7 is also C6O & it is almost perfect. No dead pixels & only the extremely tiniest lift only visible if viewed at just the right angle. Not even an issue. My 8gb is also a C6O & no lift or problems

Problems with the OP5 regarding build quality.

Hey xda,
I received my device yesterday finally.
After all those good and also bad reviews I was still happy to get my OP5. Right now I'm astonished by the performance of this device. The camera is fine I don't see a point in arguing it's bad. It's not.
I use my 5 for 24hrs now and I didn't need to start my computer once because I needed more power or anything. I love it. However I still have a few concerns, which I haven't seen being mentioned anywhere here yet.
First, my volume key is rattling, it's not tight. I can slightly move it with my finger (about 0.3mm). It's not a huge problem but my 3 year old HTC m8 never had this problem, even though I dropped it a hundred times and also having very similar body and keys.
Second the aluminum/metal frame around the cameralens and the glas is already loosing its color. I mean I put this phone in my pocket twice. There's has never been huge force on this part yet. The most of the time I just leave it at home on a table on a microfiber cloth and still the color is already flaking of.
Do you have similar/the same problems? I think about contacting the support.
Thank you in advance.
Here is a picture of what I'm talking about.
Yeah, that seems like a warranty issue to me. I'd be contacting OP about it.
Or just scrape off the rest of the black paint on the camera housing - free and cheap chrome bling!
If that is genuinely just in your pocket with nothing else touching the device (e.g. keys/coins) then definitely a warranty issue, could it be the stud/rivet on a pair of jeans as you slide it in/out? My volume button has no perceptible play in it.

Yeah I would have done this if my device was a year old or even a half and this happens, but not after 24hrs. I rather contact the support.

Thank you for your reply. I think I will return it then, if this was a problem to everyone I would have just lived with it.
Do you mean the dent on the upper part of the camera frame, in the middle? I think that's intentional for whatever reason.

Good to know, just knew it was intentional.
// Second the aluminum/metal frame around the cameralens and the glas is already loosing its color. //
I had this out of the box .. not sure what to do since i have a feeling this will happen over time regardless.
Mine arrived with scratches on the camera bezel. Most noticeable is on the top of the bezel, in the middle, where there is an indentation for the NFC Antenna. It seems this is very common based on thread on OnePlus's own forums.
I first opened this thread, and an admin closed is saying it is normal - this is unacceptable:
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/solved-oneplus-5-came-scratched-what-to-do.554823/
I then opened this thread, which allowed for proper discussion:
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/...the-scratches-my-new-op5-arrived-with.555362/
And then someone linked to this thread, where others have the same issue:
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/etched-line-on-top-edge-of-rear-camera-glass.553906/
My phone also came with scratches on the right side of the camera bezel.
OnePlus has opened an RMA ticket for replacement - I have to send it to Acer to inspect to determine if it is worth of a replacement.
Here is the kicker... I have to pay for the shipping! I should not be out of pocket for a manufacturing defect. I need to call in and see what they are willing to do.

Thanks for your reply, didn't see it earlier. Here in Europe you don't have to pay for your warranty in the first 2 weeks after buying at all, it's a law. Sucks you have to pay. However I contacted the support and got a return ticket for a repair. But after hearing that the jelly screen is 'normal' and won't be fixed (can't be), I canceled my repair ticket and went for a return ticket. I'm really pissed - I paid 570 Euros for a cheaply build Device. I mean it's fast and camera is great, sure. But the build quality is really underwhelming.
And after thinking about all this for a bit I'm pretty sure my device was broken even before I got it, I probably just didn't noticed it when I unboxed it.
