Hi. I'd like to completely image my wildfire before rooting so that I have an image of it before I did anything. Just in case. Is it possible with soft root or unrevoked?
Bump......
Hi. I used androot to get a soft root. Any way to backup rom?
You could use adb to extract the whole tree, but it won't preserve permissions so will be useless.
Short answer: no. Do a proper root.

Yes, but the thing is that I want the ROM preserved completely as-is, with no custom recovery or anything. Say, something got broken in hardware, so to get the phone serviced I'd need to flash the stock ROM back on. I heard they don't even check the recovery, but if someone did I'd be in trouble.
On my Linux, I used "dd if=/dev/sda of=/root/hddimg" to get the byte-for-byte copy of my HDD. Will that work in Android as well?
EDIT: Of course I didn't mean /dev/sda, the ROM device is another one, right?
i don't think you can with soft root, you can dl titanium backup and save all your apps and settings on your sd card, but that won't backup your entire rom. i would just do a full root, im not that clumsy enough to kill my phone
you can also use the ruu to go back to your stock rom, but use the right one in case you lose root
I'm looking for a way of backing up my Vodafone Rom so when I install a sim free one I can restore all settings if I ever need to send if off for warranty, it won't void it.
Anything I can do???

This doesn't make sense.
You can't ROOT a device, surely, without flashing the ROM?
So... ROOTING the device, by flashing the ROM, and THEN you want to backup the entire device? This sounds useless, as as soon as you ROOT the device, you've overwritten the original ROM! So how can you backup the Original ROM if you've overwritten it?
Which came first? The Chicken (ROM) or the Egg (Root)?
I didn't flash a ROM to get a root. I used Universal androot which does soft root on wildfire as well. Soft root means just getting root without modifying the system files permanently (ie. Changes disappear at reboot). Secondly, full root like unrevoked only write-unlocks the phone and flashes custom recover y. What I want is to have full backup of the phone WITHOUT the custom recovery so that when I flash it, it is the actual stock ROM. I know this is quite hard to do but I'm sure it is doable one way or another.
Can someone please link me to a thread on step by step Rooting
and backing up my entire device
its my first android phone and took me a long time to install apps n games n contacts a backup would help me a lot.
kindly help thank u

if you did a search of the forum or looked around the wildfire threads you'd easily find it... anyway here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788776
to backup your rom you need to do a nandroid backup, to backup apps and data dl titanium backup
I know about nandroid. Don't you have to flash a custom recovery to use it? If so, then the original aim of preserving the ROM completely the way it is becomes broken, right?

Nandroid backs up your original rom, there is no other way to back up without root... unless you use a ruu to return to stock
Aren't RUUs a bit risky to use?
Yes if you use the wrong one. But rooting and flashing a custom rom is not , very simple and not hard
Wildfire is also my first android phone but I easily learnt by reading and searching around the forum.
Hello,
It's been a long time since I rooted a device. So please be patient.
I want to root the tablet because I need open vpn connectivity and I don't need a custom ROM because I am mainly using it as a media consumption device.
Does rooting automatically mean flashing a custom recovery(CWM) Is it possible to root without flashing one(I feel stupid asking this I remember flashing CWM every time I root a Android device.)
I have heard that there are some bugs in CWM for Nexus 10.
Thanks

Well I like to think Android is Linux; which it basically is. It gives you access to system files and delve deeper than what you can normally access. superuser access more or less. You can install custom ROMs AFTER you are rooted. That's pretty much it. Also, no rooting doesn't automatically flashing a custom recovery.
A custom recovery is just a custom recovery that you can flash through fastboot..for a plethora of different functions which cannot be done easily with the stock recovery. Which is..another method of customizing and accessing your phone...since this can go on for a long time I'm just going to stop and add that you're better off reading and learning stuff before trying to do any of it though.
Good luck!
I've never quite got an answer to this: does rooting automatically ends warranty? What is Samsung's official take? Does unrooting work and can I cover traces? I only want rooting for adblocking and USB OTG, but now risking warranty.
I don't think rooting a device voids any warranty. You can always lock the bootloader and reflash the stock image and it's as if nothing ever happened.
If it were to void the warranty, Google wouldn't have made it easy to unlock the bootloader and root. If you tamper with with hardware in the device then yes it will void your warranty.
So basically, what is the point of rooting the device?

Personally I'd do that fro adblocking and external storage mounting, if it doesn't require messing with the ROM which I'd prefer not to.
what kind of adblocking just out of interest? is it possible to get something like adfender for portable devices?
AdAway is a popular app, dunno of compatible with the N10 just yet.
Rooting allows you to freeze apps that you don't want to keep them form wasting resources, freeze & hide apps you do not want the kids to use, back up apps & data plus entire system just in case you accidentally do something stupid. Then there is AdFree to block ads. Plus, if you get bored in the future you can jump into ROM flashing.

'OpenVPN for Android' (by Arne Schwabe) does not need root (btw I do not own a nexus 10 to check if it works on it)
Hello guys,
I havd a galaxy s5 g900h
And even it has warranty but i need these features :
1. Titanium backup
2. Optimizer app that can fully optimize my phone (those need root)
3. I really really need to move huge games (like wild blood) to sd becausd my s5 is 16gb
4. I need tasker
5. I wanna use xposed
So i have no xp in rooting and have nevef rooted a phone before, i come acroos the net and found two methods, one is with phils touch cwm recovery and one is with cf auto root
I cant understand the difference between tbose two, and i dunno what to use?
*towelroot does not support my phone
So i need u guys to please help me and tell me which one is right for me, the only thing i know is that ppl can flash custom roms if they root with cwm method.
So a few questions comes to my mind:
1. Are custome rom really good?
2. Are they rooted?
3. Arent they buggy?
4. Do they have samsung smart services? Like smart pause, smart stay, air view or ....
5. Will my all sms and photos remove every time i install a new custom rom?
6. Do i really need a cuatom rom?
7. Will titanium backup work in cf auto root method?
8. Will exposed framework work in cf method?
Thanks
Cf root method works fine in our 900h model..
Cf root method requires to root your phone.
And CWM or TWRP could be flash, after once you root device by using CF root method..
Custom ROM will have all basic functions and it'll not cause any problem in pic-sms-songs etc..

is always recomended to do a clean install,.. so basically yes, you must delete all, but you can always do a backup
Does anyone know if there is a way to root this phone without having to flash the rom? (Temporary or soft root)
I remember doing it on one of my older phones but all I can find for this is rooting by unlocking bootloader and flashing.
I would like to be able to retain my warranty if possible or at the least be able to unroot if I need to return this phone
Any help would be awesome!
Hey guys,
I wanna reinstall a custom rom on my Mi9T, but I need one with no root or a way to banking apps don't know that I'm on a custom rom. I always used custom rom in all my smartphones with magisk to pass in Safetynet, but now some baking apps don't work anymore, like C6 bank (digital Brazilian bank), and other shows a message that in a few weeks my device won't be able to use the app because it's not safe and not use the original rom. All these apps are in the magisk hide, the magisk it's up to date too, I tried everything and nothing works.
What do you guys suggest? I don't want to go back to MIUI and for me, I don't need the root/magisk on my phone, but I wanna continue to use a custom rom.
Thanks

In the Magisk Wiki pages there are more hints how certain apps detect root and how to hide from, not only about Magisk hide
On the other side, to flash custom ROMs you need to have Bootloader unlocked. And that can be again a way for detecting 'root' (apps do not tell you exactly what unsafe they detected), hence you may again end up not being able to use your banking apps
To stay 100% safe in that cat and mouse game of "root" and detection, you should reflash stock, relock Bootloader and in future exclusively wait for OTAs to upgrade your stock ROM
