Sound Quality issue after Nougat update - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hey guys.
After upgrading to 7.0 update i find out my phone faced with audio issue while headphone is attached.
I hear random very short noises while playing music or watching video when headphone is connected.
I also have a dual sim exynos variant and according to the chipworks it has difftent audio chip:
"We see Cirrus Logic CS47L91 Audio Codec in the G930FD. Instead of dual audio chip solution adopted in the G935T, the G930FD only used single audio chip solution. Chipworks thought that the Cirrus Logic CS47L91 Audio Codec may have enough DSP processing capability which does not need a second chip."
I want to know if other people faced with same problem or not, because i tested android 6 for 2 days and there were not even a single issue but when i come to Android 7 every thing about audio turn to sh!t.
Remember it is so hard to hear noises using stock Samsung hands free but it is too easy to hear them using an earphone with higher frequency response.

Anyone?
Say something.
At least say have not it or did not test it yet.
I asked via samsung members and they told me do a factory reset and if it's not fixed go to Samsung customer service.

When I'm listening music with headphones in my room and at lower levels (better concentration to what I'm listening), I hear very short cracks and skips every now and then. I'm using powerAmp so I was thinking that it was just the compatibility problem between the app and new system, but I can hear the same cracks when watching videos on youtube. I've tried enabling and disabling adapt sound, but it's the same. Very disappointing in my opinion.

It is not a compatibility problem and i faced with that on any player (both music and video players) but just on nougat. I was listening for at least 2 days at maximum sound volume that impacted my hearing for a week and i confirm it's only nougat related.
Just a Question: do you have a dual sim exynos variant?

I agree with U. But I can't even remember if I had those issues on 6.0.
No, I'm using single sim version g935f, it's also exynos - European version.

You can't remember because it never happened on MM.
I was testing another S7e running nougat yesterday and it also had same problem.
I believe it is a software problem and until too many people report this issue Samsung won't fix it.

man, that nougat thing is awful , full of bugs , it makes a wonderful camera awful to even not comparable to lower mid class phone , i regret the time when i updated my phone to nougat , facing many issues since then . camera , battery , sound , lolz , what else remains ? who in samsung decided to launch such crap update?? come in guys lets report it so that samsung might do some fixes , but i doubt it , because they have all their focus on s8 now, s7 is a past thing for them , but everyone cannot get new phone every year , every manufacturer should extend their support for devices to atleast 2 years !

best sound on 7.0 , in mm was terrible

Clarity and details on N is improved. I can confirm that but random noises or cracks are very annoying and you can hear it if you listen meticulously.

GT-I9500 vs GT-I9505 for audio quality

Hello guys.
I live in Edmonton, AB, Canada and I honestly am not too worried about LTE.
I simply want the S4 with the better audio quality. I'm a head-fi'er!
Was wondering if anyone has compared the 9500 and the 9505 for audio quality? I'd get the phone purely based on that...

the i9500 has the superior Wolfson DAC.
If it's just audio quality you're after get the i9500

me too interest to audio in ear ....so:do we have mod for improve the i9500 sound ,i was told it has poor audio ....?
htc one:is better any way for in ear sound ?
tks gio.
The best mod is currently PureX Audio which isn't yet available for the 9500, but will be for the 9505 because its Qualcomm.
The HTC has the Qualcomm DAC and is actually pretty impressive. In ear quality is very similar to Wolfson, with the Wolfson having an ever so slight lead. But with the PureX mod, the HTC wins hands down.
Actually, according the gsmarena SQ tests both i9500 and i9505 are currently the best sounding smartphones ever: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4_i9500_vs_i9505-review-930p5.php . I9505 is even slightly better than i9500.
It's very similar. Snapdragon is little better.
I have both versions and I find the I9500 a bit better.

Can you explain why? What's the difference?
Because on gsmarena they say different thing and that ear can't really "hear" difference.
I don't think you can go wrong with either. Considering the measurements, db and the issues both phones have with low impedance headphones I would get the i9505 for the lte. The performance is virtually identical in all aspects of the phone, minus the i9500 getting left behind in lte speedtests. Lol. Also, you may have an opportunity to flash pure aosp if your bootloader is unlocked on the i9505. I9500 loses there too.

I have checked it if anyone is interested in it and can read my poor English. Sorry for that in advance.
Headphone was an AKG K-70. It is an old type entry level hi-fi headphone and not the best but quite enough to check the sound quality of smartphones. I can tell that it is much better than the delivered one in factory pack. Also I did not use any tone manipulation. Everything was flat.
Basically I was listening such music which contains acoustic instruments and lead vocals. The difference is recognizable. First of all I can tell that none of these phones has high-end sound quality but i9500 has better sound definitely. Listening music is enjoyable on it. You can forget that you are hearing a machine and can enjoy the music itself. The stereo sound picture is also wide and correct.
This is what I cannot tell about i9505. The balance of low and high frequency is very similar to i9500 but it has much narrow stereo room and lead singers have a lisp suddenly. Problem is getting worse as number of instrument is increased in the music. So basically let it enough.
I have not checked them with full artificial music. The real sound quality doesn’t matter in that case only the tone balance which is quite similar on both phones but I won't be able to live with sound of i9505 surly because of the hissing voice.
I hope it helps.

With this mod should 9505 beat 9500 in audio quality. What about hissing in 9505, how often and strong is it when listen music? Did you try last stock firmware (Germany)? Because this firmware removes cracking sounds when use headphone with low independence on higher volume. And why do you have both versions (9505 and 9500), which one would you prefer (apart from sound quality)?

Well I checked the link. It is interesting but sorry I was not able to read through all 33 pages. Is there anybody who has experience with it on Samsung. Perhaps you? Can it be applied on the same way? I don't know when I will be able to try it but I will. On the other hand reading through the feature list I have doubt that it can help much. I think so that mostly analog part is responsible for the difference. Prepressing of the digital signal means placebo effect rather than significant improvement at this quality level. The difference was much more than we can expect from the pureX features. Nevertheless it should be checked.
So. Not hissing was the only issue but it was the most disturbing for me at least. It happens always if "sss" comes in the song. Sing, think, etc. It sounds like singer would have speech defective. Of course this problem affects other part of the music but it is most disturbing in the vocal.
The impedance of mentioned AKG is 100 Ohm which should be more than enough for high impedance headphone output as well.
Version i9500: XXUBMEA
Version i9505: XXUBMDM
I don't prefer any of these too. Both are very same. I am not involved in games but I use internet, photo, video, navigation and music mostly. So I need good sound and LTE too. I would change my 9500 to 9505 if sound would be comparable. Since my friend bought a 9505 few days ago I could compare them.
Otherwise I am very satisfied with 9500. Reading the news earlier I expected better sound quality but finally I am OK with it. This is the only place where I am still listening CD quality.

Thank you very much, I have to decide which version I buy, its hell for me. There is a link where comparing 9505vs9500 audio quality, its interesting that they highlight 9505 over 9500 a little bit. http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4_i9500_vs_i9505-review-930p5.php
I dont need LTE, i preferer better audio/camera. Iam afraid of overheating 9500, a lot of people complain for that. When browsing/watching movies, its ok? I know, I can not offer you anything else than thanks, but could you please compare 9505 vs 9500 camera quality(just photos)? Make few shots with sky a post them here in full-res, so I can compare it. In the previous version of FW was better 9500 because of more small details in picture and less noise in the sky. If possible, recommend to your friend update to newer FW, because it solves a lot of bugs (audio and camera as well). new FW for 9505 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2312329

I understand you. I was and am still in same boat. Not easy to choose.
I read the link but these data is so few. The only significant difference is the stereo crosstalk on that page. Believe me it can be even 40 or 30 and stereo picture still can be much better than the others. This info is good for nothing. However since it is less with 18 dB it means that analog electric circuit is really different in the two equipments and what I heard is really because of it basically.
Also you can read about the camera on that side. I agree with the tester that differences is due to software rather than hardware. Samsung (not only) does too many artificial post-process on their pictures which makes the comparison pointless more or less. I'll try to shot some pictures later but I don't know when we will be on the same version otherwise it really does not make sense. If phones could make raw picture ... may be. And don't forget that software updates come from time to time. If photo is so important to you, you should choose Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom. Perhaps.
http://www.sammobile.com/2013/06/13/samsung-galaxy-s4-zoom-official-lifestyle-demo-video/
but you know well that really good picture can be shot only by using a good and big enough lens.
After all I decided to buy 9500. 1) It is Samsung. 2) May be better photo/video as I read it. 3) Better sound quality which is proved now. And this third point is important to me. What is the strange for me is that after discussion had started on the net about the two DAC I did not read a single line from Samsung in which they really prove that both are same good.
LTE? Well it is sounds good but what is the real benefit in it? May be the second hand i9505s will be more expensive with 10% two years later. But how much will this 10% be?
Overheating. I haven't had such bad experience. A bit lukewarm sometimes but SII was really warm comparing to this. But I have to tell you that I don't use games and did make only short videos max 10 min. And my FW was updated immediately after buying so I didn't have experience with problematic version. Also keep in mind that not only Samsung "overheats".
Further there is another thing. What do you intend to do? Do you want to experiment with different unofficial FWs or use and enjoy your equipment? I am already over this period and shortly I can tell that all these unofficial versions always can do one or two things better while other three or four are worse or missing. And updates are never ending. My life was to wait for when the next fix comes and then what was good earlier is wrong in recent update sometimes. No, I have had enough. I have learnt that the best and most stable version is always the factory. This is my opinion of course. It does not mean that I don't try other launchers or such but no more other FW.
So if sound quality is important to you and you listen a lot of music with acoustic instruments I wouldn't dare to recommend i9505 at all. I am sure that you and everybody will be disappointed. Although this problem is so unpleasant that may be I have to check an other piece whether it is just an individual problem or general. There is 1% chance for individual.
Music is important to me and I still chose the I9505. I have IEM's so it brings the best from the audio chip. The sound is brilliant. With power amp I brought out as much as I could. Brilliant bass and mids. I can't see how the 500 would be better as the sound is so rich and perfect

Power amp always modifies the content even in flat mode too so it is tipicaly not good for test anything. Of course if you are satisfied with your 505 is cool. Enjoy it! The difference is not or not so recognizable on pure electronic music or if you modify the sound balance anyway. Aslo I have to tell that I haven''t compared the phones with factory headphone. I didn't expect that any difference can be recognizable with that. It is too low quality for this purpose.
It seem that Samsung brought a lot of frustration among their top clients, those of us who are buying their newest flagship every year or two.
They should have made a single version of S4, but with all the differences between i9505 and i9500, now only if you own them both you can declare to be somehow pleased.
Regarding the audio, I'm on i9505 and the music is not bad at all. If the others on i9500 have a different experience, perhaps better than mine, while they have their headphones while traveling with the subway, that does not bother me in any way, since I enjoy my music on my device just as well.
Then again, it is a phone. For performance, in any area, one should buy a dedicated device. It is just the way it is and will be.
Just to outline once again, I simply love my i9505 and I enjoy the music I stored on the 64 GB Samsung uhs-I card.

Video sound quality - pretty bad

Hi all
Did not come across any threads about this yet, surprisingly!
I was recording video out in a nightclub, and was very disappointed to find that the music sounded horrible. Never had such problem on my HTC one when recording at concerts or clubs.
Here is the link of the video, I uploaded on youTube
http://youtu.be/SMpa7rumrHY
Otherwise, the OnePlus has been awesome so far!
Trance family, you listen to Markus Schulz? Love trance! Sucks about the sound, you on stock app?
Sound quality in general when it comes to recording nightclubs/gigs/concerts are pretty bad with the bass etc etc.
Not to mention "Turn It Up" is a song that involves a lot of bass and drops.
Try it in a closed atmosphere like at home and test the quality of the sound.
Ensure audio codec is AAC as well.

haha yeh man love markus Schulz! one of my fav trance DJs
yeh stock camera app, running 33R stock and Franco 20 kernel.
I noticed this as well. I really doesn't take a lot to distort the audio with OPO (and surprisingly when I had my Samsung Note 2 and ran a CM based rom I had this problem as well, using stock samsung camera / rom not a problem).
Not sure if this is phone related or just the camera app/rom combo.
I do have a sub in my car but I have recorded clearly with my old Note 2 but OPO it distorts like a mofo. It's quite embarrassing.

Damm thats a bad mic...it sounds horrible
I wanted to make the switch from the m7 too,but i do record sometimes at concerts and clubs...And the htc m7 does this perfect.
So this is a no go for me this oneplus one,A pitty):
The early m7s had dual membrane mics specifically for recording in very loud concert environments. Some supply issue came up with the manufacturer and they had to stop supplying to htc because of nokia.

Ah familiar issue.
Went to a party last week and recorded some videos, as soon as the bass drops you only hear crackling noises on the video.
Friend recorded with his iphone and the recorded audio sounded a LOT better.
I also tried to cover the microphone to see if that helped but it made no difference.

has anybody found a fix for this? will changing to a different rom solve the problem? cyanogen just dont wanna fix this problem. its been a reported bug for ages now. even before the OPO.

This problem can be fixed with the Boeffla-Kernel for OPO, but they need the technical documentaion of the "WDC9320" audio codec.

Does somebody know whether it for it already a solution has given?
Found this on the OP forums
Code:
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/audio-clipping-in-loud-environments.108129/
:
"So ive tried heaps of things to try and fix this bug, one thing that may have worked is downloading this free app from the app store
Code:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grace.microphone&hl=en
and setting mic gain to 0. i have done this and the audio quality has increased 100% and is comparable with the iphone."
Most likely a ****ty mic on the oneplus, nothing to do with the software.
HTC one uses unlicensed mic from Nokia, which is far superior.
Bump
Does anyone know whether this bug is present in Oxygen OS or not?

Yeah i also had the same issue last week

[Video] Any way to stop mic clipping in loud environments? - Such as a live band?

I play in a band....When I record us playing live, or other bands, it doesn't distort, but there is a horrible clipping noise that sounds like a "quack" or "quirk" noise when the audio threshold is breached. It was like this on MM and I was hoping Nougat would be better, but there is no change.
On my last 5 phones, this NEVER happened (Nexus 6p, Moto X Pure, Galaxy S7 Edge, S6, and HTC One M9). Actually, I haven't really had this problem since 2013. My other band members iPhones are perfectly clear as well.... But my recordings are virtually useless due to this horrible noise every few seconds. Regular, everyday stuff is fine - it's just loud band settings.
Anyone know of anything that might help? I'm on the stock ROM, but rooted if I need to change anything?
Here is an example - a 25 second clip of my band on YouTube:
It sounds like the mic is being over driven and clipping/distorting. How close is the phone to the bass?

The bass is completely on the opposite side of the stage, about 25 feet away in this video. We didn't use subs at this gig, and my phone was about 5 feet behind the main speakers sitting on a towel on a concrete floor.
To me, it doesn't appear to be the bass.. It's when the drummer is hitting the snare, which is opposite of when the bass is usually hitting. The snare is usually the loudest thing on the stage.
I've tried recording at every show since I've had my phone around August or September (23 - 25 shows)....I've had it at all different points behind the speakers, in front of the speakers, on the bass side, behind everything, in peoples hands..... ect... It just doesn't like loud music.
I was wondering if there was a way to up the sensitivity of the mic, or DB where it is rated?
I've been recording my band/s for the past 7 or 8 years (ever since the iPhone 4s days). Had some that distorted bad, but usually I could tell it was the bass. But ever since I had my first HTC M7, about 2013, I haven't had any issues until now with the A7.
Did you find any solution? I go to live shows a lot, and sometimes I like to record one or two songs, I used to have Motorola g4 plus and the audio was OK, but I just bought the g5 plus and the audio is totally garbage! :crying:

No, but I haven't tried for a few weeks - since updating to 7.1.1, but it was this way on 7.0, so I don't foresee it any better.
My friends with iPhones (6-7) and Galaxy S6/S7's all sound fine.... Mine doesn't when recording something at high volume.

I can say I don't have this problem, I have been into some loud environments and even recorded a Big Band and the sound was fine; probably I will go tonight to a club or something and can test as well, but as for the tests I have done before regarding this topic, I haven't found any issue. My device is A2017G.

Hmmmm, this is the 2nd Axon 7 I've had - and both had the same issue. Maybe it's just louder behind the speakers?
I may try setting it out in front, 10 or 20 feet back and see how that turns out? It still irritates me a little, because my other phones didn't do this when I'd record the same way and place. Even going back 4 or 5 years ago to my HTC M7.

Just as I promised, I recorded a video yesterday night in a loud environment; I was no more than 1-2 from one of the speakers, and I think the quality is pretty decent:

P.D.: The video seems a little blurry, but I didn't even focus anything, I just grabbed the phone out and start to record to test the audio and I didn't care about image quality.
I've recorded live bands and the sound has been fine, far better than on any previous phone, but I haven't tried with version 7.

Is that using the stock camera/video?
I tried a couple different cameras from the playstore, one was no different than stock, one was horribly worse.

Same
Well, I recorded more video of my band this weekend. I believe the issue comes form the side of the stage I'm on required the microphone to point "towards" the stage, instead of away.....So it's extra sensitive. I recorded half a song with it one way, flipped it over and finished out the song. The half with the mic pointed away only clipped one time. The half with it pointed towards us, clipped about ever time my drummer hit the snare.
Still not as clear as my drummers wife and her S7, but livable now.
I also read you can put scotch tape over the mic and it'll help too?
[UPDATE]
Mid- last week, I made the switch from stock, to LOs.... Just tested the recording, and the problems I was experiencing in stock, with clipping, don't exist in LOs... Not sure why, but they're all gone!
I recorded several songs tonight, at a louder volume, with no clipping at all.
Just throwing this out there.

Bluetooth Headphones & Android Wear

Hello I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with having their watch and bluetooth headphones paired to the phone at the same time.
I purchased an S7 Edge last month and was quite disappointed to find out that having both paired resulted in unlistenable (for me) sound quality. I thought I was going crazy but apparently countless others have encountered this problem as well.
So i'm just wondering if this problem made its way to the s8 or not.
Thanks!

I have my Huawei watch paired with my S8 - the only time I had a problem was when I wasn't wearing my watch. My audio would randomly stop. I don't know if this is specific to the headset (jaybird bluebuds x), but I found the solution on a jaybird forum - don't use them without your watch in range. Otherwise, audio quality seems the same as it was with my pixel

Gotcha, almost as if it was focusing extra power to stay connected to the watch. I really like my S7 edge but this issue is driving me insane to the point where I might have to switch to the s8.

Also, I've had no problems with my Bose QC35s or other bluetooth connections, so I think this was just a jaybird issue.
No issues so far
S8+
Paired with LG watch R and Sony MW600
No issues in using both at the same time (same as note 4)
Only Audio issue I've had has been with some Oculus games, but I believe this is a common issue with Bluetooth.

Don't get your hopes up. S8+ myself, and I've tried with a Gear S3 as well as an the LG Style (AW 2.0), and both still have the same issue that the S7 and even the Note 7 had when I had it. Noticeable audio crush at the high end when the watch is connected. Distortions in the treble, etc. No amount of playing with equalizers would help. Really disappointing because I wish I could use a watch...but the audio quality issue when playing in my car drives me insane.
I'm fairly sure it's because Samsung pushes AptX and non-AptX devices that connect with other devices already connected get bit-crushed. Quite annoying.
I am having exactly the same issue... Galaxy S8 Plus and gear S3..sound quality over bluetooth is horrible...distortion over highs...no matter what speaker or headphones i am using...thats stupid in my opinion..
damnit! FFS Samung, had this with S6 and S7. It's the reason I waited on the S8, and they still haven't fixed it.
I guess only affects a few, but for those it does affect it's a dealbreaker.
Wow so it still exists for some? I would have been livid if I upgraded my S7e to the s8 only to have the same issues. Glad I asked!
no sound problem with my s8+, gear S2 and sony mdr-zx770BN
Too add more data to the pile -
I have this exact issue when connecting to my 2011 Genesis Coupe while also connected to my Huawei watch. However, I don't have any sound quality issues in my 2013 Explorer with Ford Sync.
I had the issue on my S6 and it's the same with the S8. I contacted Samsung about it and they told me to take it up with Huawei.

Poor sound quality

Just got my 6gb Variant today in grey colour, the screen is a bit too warm for my taste and turning it cooler makes it look ugly, also I think brightness is not as good as note 5 pro. it has purer whites and gets way too brighter than this phone. But I guess I can live with it given stock android is way better than ****ty miui. What is bothering me is poor audio quality in headphones and over Bluetooth too. I'm coming from iPhone and redmi note 3 and comparatively, they both get very loud than this also sound quality is superior to this phone.. I can live with other shortcomings like the poor camera (hopefully gcam will fix most of the issues there) and warmer screen but the sound quality is very important. Is there a way to fix this? or I'll have to learn to live with it :\
Root and instal v4a.
PS: For me sound quality is good even though its not loud but enough for my tastes.

I was so busy unlocking bootloader and rooting I forgot to check the main function of it lol just tried calling and it works perfectly on my phone. I would not install any roms on this phone, buying a phone with stock android was to avoid flashing roms, as almost all roms have some issues. I'm just going to use stock firmware with root, adblocker and gcam and that's about it. I want stability more than the features. try going back to stock android with a locked bootloader and all. if that still doesn't fix it, get a replacement from Flipkart maybe there is a hardware issue with your device. The only sound issue I've is, it is not as loud as iPhone or my Redmi Note 3 but rest seems to be in order. Hope this helps. Cheers.

I faced the same issue, the audio volume and quality was low on bluetooth (Headset/Car Audio). Flashed Firehound and that problem is resolved, though the sound is still a bit bright for my taste.

I am using RR ROM since I got this device.
Didn't check call quality for bluetooth issue in stock ROM.
I did my research and found out that call quality may get better after 3 or 4 days in stock.
Don't know about custom ROMs though.
I am going back to stock after couple of hours.
Let me check and confirm the bug.
