Article: list of phones Google regularly updates with security patches - LG V20 Questions & Answers

These are the phones that receive regular security patches, according to Google http://news360.com/article/395488795
LG v20 is the only LG phone listed and you'd be surprised on how many phones are actually missing from the list, Nothing from HTC and the only Samsung model is the S7.

Interesting. I am still at Dec 2016, hope will get a patch soon.

Yeah, so am I. I hardly would call that "regular".

My wife's Stylo got the Feb 2017 security patch 3 weeks ago. They support their$175 phones with security better than their $750 phone.

Note 4 has been getting almost regular security patches. I haven't flashed mine up to date as it's a lot of trouble to set mine up between Xposed and code changes but nonetheless it's been somewhat regular. I think I am on may or June 2016 and it is up to February or March at least.

Its quite "complex" because they state it depends on which carrier you are on which patches you get and when. If you buy the phone outright its different again? I would be fascinated how it works. The world of Microsoft Windows, iphones, Pixel & Nexus is so much more simple. I did reach out to LG support no real straight answer.

No more security updates

Well, that's it guys & girls.
I bought this tablet new 6 days ago and today the big G issued their September security update, and there's no love for the N7 2013 :/
I wasn't expecting Nougat but their site did say updates until July next year I think. Oh well. It's still a great device.
I assume it's not possible/too much work for someone to take on creating security otas from other devices?
Wait a few days. They've supported everything else through the guaranteed time for them thus far. (Maybe they are going to surprise us and throw Nouget at us......I doubt it, but it was dead simple to port and mostly works)
^No if they stick to what they say we are done: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/4457705?hl=en
We are obviously over 3 years since release and are also over 18 months since it was removed from the store.
Going by that link we were lucky to get M as that was over 2 years.
Honestly it doesn't matter to me that Google stopped supporting the 2013 Nexus 7, even though it's three years old it still performs extremely well for it's aged hardware. I'd love to know whether or not the rumored 2016 Pixel tablet is an actual thing...
I see factory images for other devices containing the september 6 2016 security patches but not for the nexus 7 2013. So it looks like I will have to migrate to another rom in order to have my device secure.

But they won't work for this device if they're for another device, right?
I wonder how difficult it would be to create N7 patches from patches released for, say, N6 etc?

Don't worry, nobody is going to hack your lousy 90$ tablet.

I am assuming that other nexus 7 2013 roms (AOSP/Cyanogenmod/etc) do incorporate the latest security patches. It is just google that has stopped creating and pushing images to our devices.

LG & Monthly Security Updates

So, are we just going to sit here and wonder why LG is not giving us Google's monthly security update. No update since September 1st (About phone > Software info). I have a feeling we won't see 7.1.1 either. I haven't owned an LG device since the G2 (God bless that phone!)... how are they usually with software updates? Thoughts?

It's really not important. I hope we don't see 7.1, that means we might get updated to 8.0.

I'll have a different phone by then ?
My V10 and wife's stylo both get the updates. We will get them, but usually behind by a month or 2

Will get updates for sure but I wouldn't stress over them. The only way to get your update fix (if that's your thing) is nexus pixel of course.

Concerned with the lack of monthly security updates for unlocked US996, I contacted the LG Product Security Response Team(LG PSRT).
I communicated my concern that LG was ignoring monthly android security updates published by Google.
I questioned why they would expect me to invest in a "Flagship Phone" when they couldn't bother with security updates.
I received no real answers other than "LG apologize for the late update schedule"
They informed me that the next update for the US996 should be "mid June".
So, if you want more than 6 month updates, try another brand.
I like LG phones, but there are other brands more concerned with security.

LG V20™ T-Mobile H918 updates-confirm?

https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-32430 currently lists "Android 7.0 Software version H91810p Available August 7, 2017, Google monthly security update, Various bug fixes and software improvements" while my Nexus 6P lists Android security patch level August 5, 2017, can any updated T-Mobile H918 owners confirm (e.g. in Settings->System->About phone->Software info) their LG V20™ T-Mobile H918 has the August or July Security patch level?
Feel free to also comment if you've noticed any issues (i.e. problems or "improvements") with such updates?
-Thx
Mine shows July security patch.

Appreciate the reply, so I assume you have no regrets choosing it with its recent updates, fully functional Wi-Fi calling..is your updated H918 about as snappy as it was initially?
BTW, do you/anyone expect the H918 will get an official Oreo-Android 8 update?
I think the V20 will get Android 8 but it will be a bit late to the party. If you want Android 8 out of the box you'll likely need a pixel or the V30.
I am finding it so far about the same performance-wise as before. As for wifi calling, I don't make a lot of actual phone calls so I can't speak for hope that's working. But it is showing connected while connected to WiFi.

The V30 specs should be confirmed Thursday but I've read the Pixel 2 devices will more likely be the first with Android 8 out of the box.

The V series is what LG usually uses to experiment with especially with newer versions of Android.

I Think Oreo Update Is Eminent Cuz of recent Security Patches

I don't know about anyone else but I have gotten 3 back to back security updates in the past 24 hours to bring my ph up to the April 2018 patch level. Before this, it had been months since I'd gotten a security patch.
I speculate its a pre-req for the Oreo update because I just bought my daughter the Moto X4 this week & the 1st thing that occurred out of the box, is that it got 3 consecutive security patches to bring it up to the March patch level & only then did the Oreo update show up immediately after that.
This is all pure speculation on my part but based on some recent events that don't add up unless they are about to push out the Oreo update.
What do you guys think?
I was surprised to receive the April patch this morning. I really hope they're pushing the Oreo
i think so also man.. because to get march and april so quick..something is up!
Lets see what they are up to.. as we are now in Q2
I would doubt that the security patches mean anything other than the Android Security Team pushed out an extra patch.
Honor release Oreo for 7x.. i think next One It s Honor 8 ?
They're also updating their Huawei Backup app with a newer UI.
I haven't received any updates since Feb, B361, L02 anyone else in India got the security patches for April?
I was thinking this also. I hope it means that for true.

May patch, if someone interested.
well i am thinking opposite they may be clearing up the queue of the updates towards the end of line
I really hope we will get Oreo and Project Treble, that would most likely mean we could get some more stable ROMs on our phone
Oreo Oreo oreoooo!
Well this seems promising:

I dunno. My phone still sits on B394 with august 2017 security updates. And it's bought officially. Go figure.

So I guess the V20 isn't getting Android Pie officially now?

Haven't seen much talk about it on the web for a while. Wasn't it supposed to come out in Q3 or Q4 if so?

Damn, where can I download "Screwed" for my phone?
If I remember correctly, the Oreo update was later than projected. Don't give up hope yet (though you may be right).
I wish they would ship the update. They must have completed 95+% of the required work since the Korean V20 phones are updated.

Agreed
American providers are notoriously slow to approve updates especially when they declare a phone eol and drop network support...
I'm not sure why this is such a big deal. Oreo doesn't even completely work well on the V20, so why should I be enthusiastic about getting a version of Pie that has a jacked up second screen and various other issues like the Korean V20 variants? I'd rather have a fully functioning device than something with newer software but still broken and outdated.
It's Windows 8.0 fever in here. Or Magisk 20.2 fever. Whatever your choice of not fully tested software is.
