Hi All,
Is it just me or is everyone's s7 edge like that, I spend more type wiping the smudge off the screen of my phone than I actually use the phone.
It's driving insane the amount of smudge on the screen, is this peculiar to the S7 because I didn't notice the same on the LgG5, the s6 or any other phones I have used.
Any way to stop this as I don't use a screen protector.
sadly thats what we have to sacrifice for a more tough screen.

Seem like oleophobic or anti-smudge coating on your phone have weared out.
Have you ever used some kind of chemical(such as alcohol) to clean the display? These things can damage the coating and leave your phone smudge magnet.

Thanks for the reply. I have never used any alcohol based cleaning liquid. I only use distilled water and a lint free piece of cloth.
Sadly if this means sending it back to Samsung to fix that means time for a new device.
Thanks for the response.

Hey guys,
I have my N4 for about a month. But I can already feel the screen getting a slightly rough feeling to it, in the middle, where I touch it most often. If I feel the sides that are not touched as often, they feel perfectly smooth. I never used any other cleaning agent as plain water or never anything else then a microfibre cloth to clean it.
Did anybody else notice the same?
Thanks.
Yeah happening to me too for sure. Its not a permanent coating so its expected :/.

oleophobic coating has worn off, you need to get some drops for it. it only lasts for a few months and less if you clean thr display with cloth/ shirt.

How are you guys cleaning your screens?
I've never had an issue with the coatings in the past.

This is really interesting, yet I never had any coating wearing off in the past. Perhaps my defy did not have a coating at all?
BTW, I googled your coating kit and found instructions on ifixit, love how they show off the oleophobic (oil-hating) coating by dropping water on it
Is this normal in general for cell phones? I don't recall HTC phones having this problem.

Sprinkle some water on it. Wipe with microfibre cloth.
Somehow I miss my defy, I would just apply soap to it and rinse with flowing water
It happened to me too, but on the curved edges on the side which are not covered by my screen protector but by my tpu case.
Strangely, there is a space from about 1 cm on both left and right side which seems okay.

Hey Guys! Just wanna share this problem. After removing a cheap screen protector on my nexus 4 i still have this pattern - the cutout on proximity sensor and on the camera. I tried scratching it with my nails but there is really no more residue, the surface is flat but the feel on the screen is different on the sensor or the actual glass. Did I remove a coating or something after removing the protector? I also dropped a small amount of alcohol trying to clean it and observed that it follows the pattern. Check out the pictures please. Thank you very much.
What does this mark feel like and how hard is it?

I couldn't describe it but you could barely feel the difference between the real glass (proximity or camera or edges) and the area covered by the screen protector. It seems It'd never be removed. I tried tape, alcohol, scratching it, none worked.

Mmmm, I assume that the residue has absorbed into the Gorilla Glass which is really bad in many ways...

Either that, OR it has peeled off the oleophobic coating with it. OP, Do finger prints stick more than usual?

I thought the term oleophobic is for the steinheil SPs only. Is it really possible? What could possibly happen? Well I cant say, I immediately put a screen protector on the device right after I got it.
i'd say the oleophobic coating just rubbed off completely around the screen protector, mine has a slight problem around the sensor and front camera cut-out but it can only be seen if there are fingerprints on the screen and you know what you are looking for. i think it happens because of sweat/skin oils.
I am new to posting but have reviewed posts for a long time here. I've had my Nexus 4 for about 6 months and have cleaned the screen often with eye glass cleaners and hand soaps and such. I know this is probably a big no no. I am learning this now because the screen smudges very easily now. I just cleaned it today and its all smudgy again. I compare it to my fiancée's Nexus 4 I got her and its not even close. It doesn't retain thoses smudges like this. I also have a work iPhone (I hate BTW) but it's screen is never smudged.
Is there something I can do to fix this? A resurfacing cleaner? Or is the screen just gonna be like this now that I have removed whatever coating it had?
Thanks!
Dude handle with care..
You can use a flip cover to avoid such kind of smudges, also keep your fingers clean while using the phone. :good:
Having dust on screen is another scenario..
I would recommend getting a bestskinever screen protector or any screen protector with oleophobic coating.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I am going with the bestskinever option. I have been wanting to use one however I have had bad experiences in the past. We will give this a try.
Do you guys think I did indeed ruin the surface coating it had originally with the type of cleaners I used?

it's not the cleaners. i never used any cleaners on my screen and its oleophobic coating from the factory wore off within a couple months - a round spot concentrated towards the center of the screen where your finger touches the screen the most. only way i could fix it is putting a screen protector on it.
The coating does indeed rub off naturally as you use it, but the cleaner you used definitely killed the coating a heck of a lot faster. Hell, I wouldn't even use eye glasses cleaning solution on my glasses since those things would kill the anti-glare coating on it.

Cover is on its way to me. I'll share my thoughts on it. Thanks for the help.

Mild hand soap works well for me for both glasses and phones. I don't think you need anything stronger to clean hand grease.

I'm wondering what kind of glass the S5 will sport? Is this known?
I think a lot of people want to know if it's worth buying a screen protector. I prefer just using a case to keep the screen safe and a screen without a screenprotector feels snappier
Have you considered using a glass screen protector? It gives the same "Snappy" effect as bare glass but also provides scratch protection for the screen.
Assuming I get the S5, that will be my first investment for the device.

I'm curious about these tempered glass screen protectors as well. I've always used Zagg HD on my devices and never had an issue. Was also curious do these screen protectors stay water resistant as well?

Sure, but say I use a flip case for the S5 and keep it in pocket (closed) most of the time. Do I need a screen protector? (I can imagine you need it for unforeseen circumstances, but everyday life?)

I would say for this reason more so than not. See, pocket lint and other dust/dirt/contaminates that make it into your pocket can often times cause micro scratches on your screen. Do you know what happens when those little items you can barely see get trapped between the flip cover and the screen? Well as you walk it actually uses that cover to grind those things into the screen even more. I like the flip covers, but without a screen protector i think they stand the potential to do more harm than good. I say, having a screen protector has yet to be a hindrance, why chance it.

I remember hearing somewhere it uses Gorilla Glass 3. I'm 100% sure it does. As for a screen protector, I find them unnecessary. I never drop my devices and always clean with microfiber, so scratches haven't been a problem. It's really a personal thing, but if I had to go for a screen protector it would be Spigen's GLAS.tr model.

Be extremely careful with the S5 bezel. I dropped my S5 facing down the other day. I took it and checked as if anything was broken. Didnt look carefully but turned out the bezel cracked but its very very hard to notice unless u watch it closely. I think a bumper wont hurt anyone. I personally want this girl naked

I'm just going to buy a samsung flip case and screen protector (glass one for premium feel).
hello, under strong light there are all over the screen micro scratches on my s7 edge. Is it just for me?
Some people report getting micro scratches. Other people (including me) have checked very carefully and find zero scratches, despite using the phone heavily for months with no case or screen protector. The phone doesn't get scratches, micro or otherwise, unless something happens to cause them.
Sand maybe? Sand causes awful scratches
Sand is a killer, agree. Even tiny amounts have ripped my screen to shreds on previous devices.
All good on my S7E so far, not a mark. I had terrible microscratches on my S6 Edge+ and didn't know why, I handled that phone with the utmost care (except when I sat on it). Eventually I discovered there were tiny crumbs of doggie snacks in my pocket that were the culprits... Go figure.

Sounds daft I know, but true! Always have a handful in pockets - bribery, my mutt is a naughty boy - and with a phone in there and long walks the snacks get quite finely grinded over time. The filters in my washing machine and tumble dryer confirm it, as well as confirming I need better laundry habits....
Mine too, despite the fact that I'm very cautious with my phone.. Fortunately, they're not visible except under direct light.
Used my t shirt to clean my screen. now got a micro scratch. having a nightmare finding a good screen protector.

Unless your shirt is made of sandpaper, it's not what scratched your screen. For years now, my phones have had no case or screen protector, and I always wipe the screen off with my shirt or with a moist paper towel. I've never gotten even the slightest scratch on the screen (and for my Note 5 and S7 Edge, there have been no scratches on the back glass either). I do check carefully under bright light, with the screen off, from a variety of angles.
I use a spigen case, i put on a screen protector then put it in its case and it peels the protector off.
will try a spigen screen protector.
it was my works t shirt. after my note 7 screen scratched i was extra cautious with my s7 edge. had a fingerprint on it. wiped it on my t shirt. checked again. and ffs. a micro scratch.

Yes, I have micro scratches on my back side all over the place, but I know exactly why. When I place my phone on a table, two corners on the bottom and the camera bump are in contact with the table. Aaand... yea.. that will leave some marks after 6 months of heavy use. I solved this by buying a skin before, and now I bought a bumper, so when I place it, it doesn't touch the phone but the skin or bumper.
Though... My friend has S6Edge and he doesn't have a single, like literally not a single micro scratch.

I genuinely cared the first 2 months and I didn't even place it much on any surfaces. Mainly I just hided it in my pocket or smth. Even with this, there have been many micro scratches... And that's when I stop caring and I'm placing the phone wherever I need to and want to.
