About root: What to do when there are updates?

I am very excited to see that the new Moto X is about to be rooted soon (apparently). I just want root for Adaway, Xposed, and a few other niceties. I have no wish to put a custom ROM on the Pure.
But I have a few basic questions (sorry if this seems noobish), what happens when Motorola sends updates to the phone? In particular, when it gets updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
- Would I need to unroot, install the update, and then root again?
- Would updating get rid of root, and would I need to wait for a new root procedure to be discovered?
- Is there some risk that I would need to re-install all my apps?
- Anything I need to worry about?

Flash Recovery
Flash SU.
It's an unlocked phone. You never lose root.

Or if you're going the whole hog -flash a custom ROM (stock or AOSP) and wait for the developer to promptly update the package

I assume with some patience updates will get posted here to flash. Stock rooted ROMs are pretty popular I think this will be no different.

Your last comment is reassuring. I'm still learning when it comes to rooting; I had my friend root my Galaxy S3 years ago, but I'm gonna try to do it myself this time and learn the details of the process, and all that it entails (possible consequences, etc). Please bear with me.
Based on what I've read online (for example this article), it says OTA updates will break the root, but I can always re-root after the OTA and it's only a minor hassle (for phones with unlocked bootloader). Is that pretty much what you're saying as well?
So once Motorola rolls out the 6.0 Marshmallow update, would I need to re-unlock the bootloader (via this thread ) , and then re-flash recovery, etc?
At any point would I need to worry about losing any data on the phone?

I never seen the point of just rooting for apps and such i always rooted for custom roms but honestly if u want to stay with your stock rom and root it, with every update u need to flash that stock rom again.. Then update... Then reroot as some phone do loose root after updates..

I actually want motorola's features (Moto display, Moto actions, always-on voice recognition).
Is it possible that there is a flashable version of the stock Motorola rom? So once there is a 6.0 update, instead of OTAing, I can download a flashable version of it and just flash that instead?

Some apps only work with root (like Batter Battery Stats, xposed). That's a good reason to just root without custom roms.

The sole reason i root is to install an ad blocker.

Yup, for me Better Battery stats, Titanium Backup, the possibility of putting the back button on the bottom right instead of left, and activating double tap are all reasons to root the stock rom.

Double tap is ROM specific isn't it? Or is there an xposed module? Its the one thing I miss from my OnePlus, despite the 'aware' sensors

Much of the stuff you people are trying to accomplish can be done with Nova Launcher. No root needed.

If you flash back to stock.
Remove the custom recovery.
You can now take the OTA.
After you take the OTA.
Re-install TWRP
Flash SU.
I have done it on other unlocked devices.
The point being, an unlocked bootloader allows you to flash/install TWRP whenever you want.
Then you can regain root.
Unlocked bootloader means you can always regain root.

You'll never loose data (except for the first time you unlock the bootloader) unless you choose to wipe internal storage. So no worries mate.

Good to know. I'm curious to know if there's a simpler way to update. Is it possible that there is a flashable version of the stock rom and future stock roms? So once there is a 6.0 update for the Pure, instead of OTAing from Motorola, I can download a flashable version of it and just flash that instead (1-step process)?

I honestly don't know. I'm coming from a Cyanogenmod-rom'd phone, so I'm just hoping I'll be able to get back some of these features...

There might be but if u want simple flash a custom stock rom, im sure they will have a few, its basically stock rom but with tweaks and with a few stuff added. Then feom there just flash the updates for that rom. On my lg g3 i use to use a rom called cloudyg3 rom, it had everything stock rom had but a more tweaked version and such.

I opened this thread hoping for a method to prevent taking the 6.0 OTA, because as I understand, from reading the Moto X PE TWRP thread, The only root method for 6.0 is systemless, which I think I want to stay away from, in hopes that 6.0 will get regular root, in the future. I think i would rather stay on LP, while waiting.
My MXPE arrives Thursday! I would like to use it some, before having to root, but I am certain the 6.0 OTA update will be soon to show.
Is there a way to stop the OTA, prior to bootoader unock and root?
Do I just need to unlock/root/flash ROM right away?
I am hesitant, because I'e been away from Moto rooting for a few years. I've been Samsung rooting, with TWRP and SafeStrap.

I found it, and replied.

After using the S7 Edge for 1 week with / and Xposed. Stock TW has to go

Got my S7 Edge SM-935W8 Installed TWRP, CF Auto root and xposed. Before i did that i used the stock phone for a day. FASTEST PHONE IVE EVER USED. NOTHING COMES CLOSE TO THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS PHONE OUT OF THE BOX. THIS IS NOT A POsT TO BASH THE S7 EDGE
Off the go xposed did not work well. Bootlooped every other restart and added a lot of time to startup.

So does that mean you are going to flash back the stock ROM. I'm undecided on whether to root or not. I've been jailbreaking since the first iPhone, and the S7 edge is my first ever android device. I must say I can do almost everything I used to on jailbreak but with a lot less effort.

Are you sure you got the correct Xposed version ? (Arm64, SDK 23)
Out of the box, First thing I did was Power up in bootloader, Flashed TWRP. Root is a must for me.

Me too, can't work out if he is saying it was better before or after root and exposed??

After i install Xposed framework, as jazonX states (Arm64, SDK 23) , my phone won't boot anymore and i am forced to
reinstall stock image. what am i doing wrong ?

This is specifically made for TW devices, because Samsung makes modifications to ART and other things that break the normal Xposed. I installed it on my S7e and it works like a charm

Anyways I wrote this because if you go far enough to trip Knox you aren't going to want to run stock TW. With the features this phone has I can't see myself running cm or a AOSP distro if I lose out on the hardware's capabilities. For a thousand dollar phone the price tag doesn't meet the performancs running stock with root and xposed.
I used wanams custom Xposed v80 x64. The TWRP exynos version and Cf-root. This version of Touchwhiz is 8gb. There is ALOT of RAM usage on the device stock. With Xposed framework on top the device is lagging behind what it should be.
I'm dying to get a custom TW running because this device is a beast but there is to much on top of the essentials that are holding back the s7.
If you are thinking of going the mod route you should not use stock. When the time comes flash a custom TW.

Yeah, 0x1 now.
Wasn't a big deal for me, as this is probably the sixth phone I had with Fort Knox.

I wanna start playing with this thing but Sam mobile doesn't have our firmware up yet.
Any other firmware I can use to reflash stock if I run into trouble playing with this thing?
I'm also on the w8 variant and like to have everything on my laptop before I make the leap

You shouldn't need another. With Odin you can flash the recovery again if it fails but after you have a recovery you can just factory reset it and it well go back to default. Go to the TWRP EXYNOS thread and follow his steps. Its a smooth process

Download Nandroid manager and online Android backup. Your gonna have to get TWRP and root
Make a backup and save it to your SD card. Copy it somewhere safe, and make sure you can flash it if anything goes wrong.
Or you can hold off and wait for Sam's mobile. In due time it will have a stock image for your provider

Hi Benny, it's awesome you got it all working. I have same model of the S7 Edge. I am rooted, however I didn't install TWRP yet, because I was confused about the instructions in the "exynos twrp" thread.
Did you glad the "dm-verity- disabler "? I'm not sure what that does, but it was part of the instructions. Also did you do a factory reset when flashing twrp? Because my phone is all setup up now, I don't want to do a factory reset to get twrp.
Please advise

before i root i need to make sure sammy can resolve all 6.0.1 issues, mainly crappy 3d gaming performance. happens on ALL 6.0.1 devices, on Note 5 running angry birds 2 for 5 minutes results in awful lag and stuttering same with s7e, however 5.1.1 Note 5 runs it perfect!!!
i mainly play ppsspp emulator and angry birds 2, and this stupid bug must be resolved!

That file removes the encryption on internal storage. It's required if you wish to have TWRP have read write access to the internal storage. Wichita is required if you plan on using custom rom in the future.
I'm thinking what you could do (which is what I'm gonna do) is flash the auto root method. Then do a full backup with titanium to sd card. Then install TWRP and do full wipe and no diversity script and TWRP root method.
Then reload my titanium backup.
Think this will best of both worlds as I'll have read write access and won't lose all my data.
Can anybody confirm or correct me on my thinking here?

I was also wondering about Viper4Android. I could really use the boost and equalizer.

Can you either nandroid back or flash a stock image if things go south? Can you even flash zips in TWRP yet without issue? You're rolling a big pair if you can't do either.
Is there an xposed for Nougat? Rumor says no. Rumor confirmed.

To be honest, there's really not much benefit at all to rooting yet. Yet people spend hours upon hours of aggravation trying to do so, with many of them that shouldn't be anywhere near an ADB command.
It's the same story with every new phone. The "root commandos."

Do you think it might work on Tilde's ROM? it's a 7.0 ROM
I really dont want screw up, I would not know how to reverse it.

I was just thinking the same thing... i've almost always rooted and modified my phones.. but I think it was usually for a specific purpose or need..
the older phones I had were running touchwiz.. which i HATED to use.. so was so eager to get ROM with more of a stock android..
Or how I would love having some of the features of Cyanogenmod.. like "ScreenShot" or Reboot menu ... but with the V20.. it has screen shot built in beautifully..
I know it was also nice to be able to install titanium backup and be able to delete a lot of the stock bloatware .. but the V20 doesn't have much.. plus I can disable most of them...
I do wish I could find a rom that may run a little faster... I have noticed some Hiccups with this phone.. and 1 or 2 random reboots.. but honestly i'm sure if I went with custom software or modifed with Xposed.. i could see that more..
It would be interesting to see what some of the reasons why people on here have rooted the V20.

Mega ROM On 7.0 Stock Kernel With SU. If You Have TWRP, Back Up Just In Case. Download Xposed Installer And In Settings There Is An Installation Option, Choose Manual (This Will Save Downloaded Files So You Can Flash Manually From SD) go To The Main Screen And You Can Get Both The Official framework And The Uninstaller. Consider Looking Up How To Unbrick just In Case

I never did root my V20. I'm on the Note 8 now and can't see any benefit of rooting it, either.
I'm really fond of Android Pay. I'm pretty fond of my phone working as it should all day every day. To one degree or the other, you lose that with root. SystemUI tuner will do quite a bit of Xposed's work, and I'm not so annoyed with ads that I feel a need for Adaway.

I installed the original version first. Once it was up and running, I flashed the new version.

I'm just glad most, if not all, are able to use xposed on nougat. The little things in life! Even though its just a phone!

Guide to root and rom

Hi. is there any basic step by step guides for getting f the latest also extended ROM on my stock oneplus 3t.
Use to do it may y years ago and have lost / forgot everything lol. Also wondered if possible is it able to be rooted and still have access to banking apps using that ROM.

Used this earlier this evening. Simplest guide I've found and works fine for op3t, even though it's written for op3. Also replaced supersu with magisk zip with no difficulties.

Thanks for that. I will look at it tomorrow and attempt it. Did you replace SuperSU during the rooting or after? Read a few ways to do it so just wondered. Is it true that magisk is the way to get android pay and back king aps to still function with root?

Didn't flash SuperSU at all. Tried installing magisk at the same time as new rom (vertex - recommended!), but ended up having to uninstall then reinstall later. Magisk v12 wasn't passing safetynet for me, but the Beta v13 magisk seems to be doing the trick for now.

Help, newbie confused!

After 4 1/2 years I finally killed my M8 and am having a HTC 10 with Nougat delivered tomorrow. My M8 was stock rooted with xposed and that's what I would like to do to the 10. When I set up my M8, I unlocked via HTC dev, flashed TWRP, TWRP rooted the device and then I flashed xposed. I would like to do the same to my 10 but am unsure if it's possible or how to do it. I tried googling but a lot of the results were a year old and and I'm not sure that they still apply today. Do I still unlock via HTC dev or should I use sunshine? Will TWRP still install a version of Chainfire's SuperSiu or do I need to use Magisk to root? Is xposed still possible?

You can still unlock via HTC Dev. S-off via Sunshine is also possible and you can leave your bootloader locked, as well. You'll need to use the latest SuperSU, as well as the latest version of TWRP. Can't comment on Magisk versus Xposed because I don't use either one.

Xposed is not possible on Nougat. What were you using it for? I use Magisk for all the mods I used to use (adblocking, YouTube background playback, etc.). Magisk is pretty cool, and Magisk's SU replaces SuperSU for all intents and purposes that I'm aware of.
If you want / need S-OFF, you'll need to pay for Sunshine. If you don't, just unlock via HTCDev, run the latest RUU if necessary (a new update just came out today), install TWRP, boot up into your home screen, install Magisk Manager, use that to download Magisk root, and go about your merry way.
I just jumped from stock (Bad Boyz) to Pure Fusion AOSP from the main HTC 10 forum, and I'm really loving being back on AOSP.

There is Xposed for Nougat, albeit recently and it's listed as unofficial.

Well how about that? I just skimmed but it looks like the original dev behind Xposed is leery of this implementation, but I don't understand all of that. I guess just the fact that it's possible will be encouraging for a lot of people.
Even so, I'm quite happy with Magisk.

None at all that I've noticed. I mainly use LTE but I switched to wifi for a few hours last night, no problems on my end.

Thank you all for your help, I'll hold out on magisk for a bit to see how the new xposed comes along.

I haven't tried it myself but be careful, several people have told me the Sprint HTC10 has more problems being unlocked than other US versions, especially when it comes to flashing the radio to use on different carriers. Specifically I've been told trying to flash the Verizon radio will not only fail but has the potential to permanently disable your radio.
