Help, newbie confused! - Sprint HTC 10 Questions & Answers

After 4 1/2 years I finally killed my M8 and am having a HTC 10 with Nougat delivered tomorrow. My M8 was stock rooted with xposed and that's what I would like to do to the 10. When I set up my M8, I unlocked via HTC dev, flashed TWRP, TWRP rooted the device and then I flashed xposed. I would like to do the same to my 10 but am unsure if it's possible or how to do it. I tried googling but a lot of the results were a year old and and I'm not sure that they still apply today. Do I still unlock via HTC dev or should I use sunshine? Will TWRP still install a version of Chainfire's SuperSiu or do I need to use Magisk to root? Is xposed still possible?

You can still unlock via HTC Dev. S-off via Sunshine is also possible and you can leave your bootloader locked, as well. You'll need to use the latest SuperSU, as well as the latest version of TWRP. Can't comment on Magisk versus Xposed because I don't use either one.

Xposed is not possible on Nougat. What were you using it for? I use Magisk for all the mods I used to use (adblocking, YouTube background playback, etc.). Magisk is pretty cool, and Magisk's SU replaces SuperSU for all intents and purposes that I'm aware of.
If you want / need S-OFF, you'll need to pay for Sunshine. If you don't, just unlock via HTCDev, run the latest RUU if necessary (a new update just came out today), install TWRP, boot up into your home screen, install Magisk Manager, use that to download Magisk root, and go about your merry way.
I just jumped from stock (Bad Boyz) to Pure Fusion AOSP from the main HTC 10 forum, and I'm really loving being back on AOSP.

There is Xposed for Nougat, albeit recently and it's listed as unofficial.

Well how about that? I just skimmed but it looks like the original dev behind Xposed is leery of this implementation, but I don't understand all of that. I guess just the fact that it's possible will be encouraging for a lot of people.
Even so, I'm quite happy with Magisk.

None at all that I've noticed. I mainly use LTE but I switched to wifi for a few hours last night, no problems on my end.

Thank you all for your help, I'll hold out on magisk for a bit to see how the new xposed comes along.

I haven't tried it myself but be careful, several people have told me the Sprint HTC10 has more problems being unlocked than other US versions, especially when it comes to flashing the radio to use on different carriers. Specifically I've been told trying to flash the Verizon radio will not only fail but has the potential to permanently disable your radio.

Any ROM without root?

So, long story short my mum had an iPhone 5, and she wanted a larger phone. The 6 and 6 Plus were way too expensive, so I said to get the Note 4. She loved it, at first. She then started to get more and more angry at it, since TouchWiz crashed often. So I said I'd custom ROM it, after all, I had done the same to my step dad's S5, he's pleased now. BUT, CM12 nightlies aren't exactly stable, and she gets crashing and stuff. Plus, she wants to be able to use her banking app, since it blocks phones with root. It works fine on my OnePlus One with Paranoid Android. Is there any kind of ROM for the Note 4, any PA ROM, any ROM without root? And no, I'm not putting it back on a TouchWiz based ROM.
How can you have a rom without root? You've already rooted it to put a custom rom on it.
Anyways I'm on TeKXodus 5.01 rom right now and its WAY better than stock. Check out his thread.

You can install a rom and then simply un-root it afterwards. This gives you custom rom without root

The SuperSu Pro app has a Full Unroot feature in the settings. It might be there in the unpaid version too, although there are likely other ways as well.

Alright thanks, its just CM nightlies come with built in root and stuff. They aren't exactly stable however. Is there any PA-like ROMs for the Note 4 here?

I see this very often, but it isn't true.
you don't need to root for a custom rom.
on most devices (including the note 4) you need a custom recovery and an unlocked bootloader(it's often unlocked out of the box) for a custom rom.
some device(like gen8 archos devices) even allow custom roms with the official recovery thanks to a developer mode, or they don't have a signature check and just let you flash custom roms through an official updating utility(such as the old advent vega which accepted custom roms flashed through nvflash)

Disadvantages of rooting?

Hi there, I'm no new to development, but haven't played with a phone in a while.
Can someone please tell me what the disadvantages of rooting the Nexus 6p are?
My plan is to get root access only to use specific apps (eg greenify) but not to install a new ROM, i.e. I'll stay with stock.
Does this affect:
-Applicability of OTA updates from Google
-ability to use the fingerprint reader
-warranty claims
-speed/stability of the device?
Thanks in advance!

-OTA are not possible when rooted. You have to flash back stock boot.img and recovery.img to accept an OTA.
-It does not interfere with Nexus Imprint (Fingerprint reader.)
-Does not affect speed or stability
-Warranty is not affected because you can flash stock imgs and relock bootloader.
You can take OTA's if you do the systemless-root. I believe you would have to flash the recovery back to stock, though.
I think you have to flash boot as well since it's modified.
the biggest disadvantage is your device become instantly awesome, so if you are used to being annoyed about the stock OS missing features this is hard to deal with
But honestly the best thing about owning a nexus is you can root and easily go back to stock if you change your mind. The flash images are also easily available for updates (even before the OTA is out). So play with it, and worst case you can always restore back to stock.
currently my only disadvantage to me is loosing android pay...
yea i know i can make it work if i delete /su/xbin... but i feel like its there for a reason and i shouldnt be deleting it.

i have been using systemless root since v 2.61... im using 2.66 now
and android pay didnt work, and even wont pass safetynet test
delete the /su/xbin folder and it passes safetynet and android pay works...
so yes, for me it sucks that i have delete that to make AP to work... which is why for now i am giving up AP since i dont feel comfortable deleting xbin and breaking stuff
Mine passes safetynet test and is just systemless with nothing deleted. No Android Pay in the UK to test it with though.
Not being awesome.

Can I use Xposed with systemless root?
Thanks for the replies everyone - that was very helpful. I've gone ahead and installed three sustemless root, and installed xposed too, leaving the rom itself untouched as stock.
However, my system is disappointingly buggy. Apps keep crashing. Is this common? I thought this was supposed to be a stable/safe thing to do!

lol this seems to happen when you root and install Xposed or pretty much modify anything. Usually I see a decrease in stability and battery life but an increase in performance, and you get to play with new features early.
I'm contemplating rooting just to use the new launcher.

You have a couple of things going on.
First root IS as safe as you let it be. If you haven't installed any root applications it should not be any more buggy than stock.
You have installed Xposed. You have not mentioned what modules you have.
I don't have any issues you describe but I don't have a lot of modules installed.
I am stock with Xposed and root.

Questions regarding Nougat.

I haven't personally used any of the Beta builds of Android 'N' and had a few questions regarding Nougat, Root, TWRP and Xposed.
I always flash the stock factory images using fastboot, so when the Nougat image is available, I plan on wiping and starting fresh. After I get it all flashed, I was wondering how I'd go about getting TWRP? Do I simply flash TWRP using fastboot as I have always done in the past? Or is there a special version of TWRP to be used?
Next, I read SuperSU 2.74 flashed with TWRP will get me rooted, but just wanted to confirm that just to be safe.
Last but certainly least, I realize Nougat is in its infancy stage, custom ROM wise, but will ROMs be rebased from 'M' to 'N' fairly quickly, or is it quite the difficult process? Can I also safely assume Xposed won't be working with Nougat for a while as well?
Sorry for the plethora of questions, I'm new to the Nougat scene.
I'm also interested in finding this stuff out, as I will be coming from rooted paranoid android MM.

So far all the info I know is Xposed isn't supported yet, and SuperSU 2.74 can be used to get Root access, but I still haven't heard anything related to N and TWRP.
There's a new version of TWRP today for Nougat. The previous version wasn't staying installed. TWRP 3.0.2-1: https://dl.twrp.me/angler/twrp-3.0.2-1-angler.img.html
If you want Nougat now, you can use ADB Sideload to install this full update: http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/0...gs-full-android-7-0-nougat-nexus-ota-roundup/
Just boot into TWRP, choose "Advanced" and "ADB Sideload".
Then, from the command line, type adb sideload /path/to/rom.zip

for the developer previews, TWRP didn't play nicely, in short, it wasn't able to decrypt your data for some reason, and i managed to find this workaround. @anuraj1, do you know if the new twrp you linked works with N as it did on M, or are there not enough use cases for it yet?

My question is this:
I took the ota to Nougat, updated to the new twrp, got my phone rooted just fine, now, are there any custom kernels out yet that will work for Nougat?
With the new OTA out, will the factory images be released fairly soon? I'd like to try Nougat and this new TWRP.

OTA Update with unlocked bootloader?

Hi everyone, I have a nexus 6p still running 6.0.1 with an unlocked bootloader, I got the notification for the 7.0 update, but I don't know if I can install it with the bootloader unlocked. Is it possible or do I have to lock the bootloader first?
Yes, bootloader can be unlocked. If you have modified system in any way, it may not apply the update though. I.E. if you are using twrp or you changed any system files.

Just so I can make sure I pass on correct info for the future, the OTA installed by itself with twrp installed? Or did you push it via fast boot?
I went a different route and installed Nougat via a ROM (tried both Stock+ and digital Hugh's versions), so for me it was hardly any different than installing any other ROM.

Yes to the OTA installed with twrp installed, it rebooted into the twrp recovery and then did some patches, etc. rebooted updated apps and hello nougat! I did have to reflash twrp after I booted back up, it did wipe it out.
I was debating about flashing digital Hugh's rom, how do you like it so far?
Good to know, thanks.
I've used aosp based Roms for so long, stock took a little getting used to. But I don't know if I will be going back to aosp now.
Digitalhigh's ROM is very smooth, and it's setup "out of the box" to allow root and android pay (albeit you have to toggle root off when you want to use AP). That's one feature I've always missed out on W aosp.
That said, there are a couple small issues some people are experiencing, clock updating the time only every 3-5min, and some having issues with vipermod not working system wide. I haven't experienced any of those. Plus he's already working on an update to allow for centered status bar clock as well as some other features.
I personally recommend giving it a shot if you want Nougat, worst that happens is you have to nandroid restore a backup.
*Edit* and he already has the night mode built into it, as well as the new nexus launcher if I'm not mistake.
Wouldn't let me attach this in an edit for some reason. That's with 4 hours screen on time, only reason you see that little charging bump is i was backing up a few files to my PC.
Thanks for the answers, just tried to update and everything was installed :good:

Thanks for the detailed reply, you may have pushed me over the edge and I may give it a try. Ive been on Benzo rom across my last 3 phones and got used to all the goodies. But using 7 the last day I find it; very fast, been a fan of Pay when it worked with systemless, can't comment on battery yet but seems decent. I may give it a day or 2 and flash digitialhighs rom, it seems like it gives me Pay with minor hassle and is close to stock. Again thanks.

[GUIDE][addison] SETUP Moto z play XT1635-02 : from stock 6.0 to custom ROM.

I have the habit of always asking on a new device no matter how much I think I know!
I have an xt1635-02 (I am US ATT Prepaid)(nano SIM) supposedly here tomorrow so I've been reading tons here.
However, it seems that a lot of the threads are aimed at rooting stock, which I never do.
As a rule, it's trivial:
[!] In this case it seems best to OTA update stock to 7.1.1 if it isn't already. I believe bootloader must be 7.x.x for doing custom Oreo ROMs . Since mine was 6.0 it took about 8 updates OTA and maybe 2 hours(wifi) .
[!]I go to moto site and do the unlock bootloader dance (already carrier unlocked supposedly).
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
[!]Then flash twrp-3.2.1-0-addison.img (Alberto97) using fastboot on my PC. (Ubuntu 17.10 dev 18.04 with adb and fastboot)(dual boot win7)
I do this twice in a row as I have experienced it not working the first time (dead android LOL).(OCD much??? )
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...recovery-unofficial-twrp-moto-z-play-t3495629
- - -
[!] -->then flash Alberto's verity patch mentioned at the top of his TWRP thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...recovery-unofficial-twrp-moto-z-play-t3495629
This modifies stock. Else your backups of stock won't boot. Learned this the hard way!
- - -
[!]Then use TWRP to backup (default settings) stock a couple of times and put copies of both on PC (via USB on stock).(or if for some reason my USB-C doesn't work, via wifi to my router using filezilla FTP and phone app: "wifi file transfer" by "DNL Media UG"(needs permission storage=on..) - I had to redo this twice - redo this twice - kept dropping back to stock recovery.
[!]Then flash the boot logo using fastboot on PC - I usually use TWRP for this but these that I found here are not set up to be TWRP flash compat so will just remove bin from zip and flash using PC. I think I have about 4 possibilities that I found on these threads. Nice! Easy.
[!]Then boot to TWRP and flash Alberto97's AOSP 8.1 arm64 ROM. Why that ROM you may ask. Been using mainly that Alberto97 ROM on my Moto G3 (32bit version of course), and love it. There's plenty of time to try all the others!!!
I usually consider 2 root options; SuperSU 2.82-SR5, or majisk 1520. (for future readers, these are the latest at this time.)(besides I'm very used to them.)
With SuperSU I have had no probs wiping all 4(Dalvik/ART, system, data, cache), flash ROM, flash 8.1 gapps, flash SUperSU, and boot to install.
With majisk I have sometimes had troubles during install if I flash majisk in the first batch so I tend to wipe all 4, flash ROM and gapps, and boot to install. Then when I finally hit desktop, boot back to TWRP and flash 1520 and reboot.
I need root to use TBPro - no restoring on first time with this 64bit ROM- got to do it the hard way!
SO I believe that's it, but if anyone sees a flaw or problem in there, I would appreciate your help.
Thanks!!!
yep look right, i would have added backup EFS and Modem partitions, if you want to be completely safe.
For now, open gapps 8.1 are only unofficial, i would feel a bit unsecure to use that, but it's only me.

Merci! Many thanks for looking in!!!
Yes, forgot to add that - did much xda search on the efs thing and best I found seemed to be a twrp-3.1.1-0-EFS-addison.img which I may very well flash first and do that since no other TWRP that I looked at offers backup efs. Official and squid2 derived (G3) don't. I assume Alberto's doesn't. Seems like I did it very manually on the G3. If you have it it's a pretty good guarantee that you'll never need it! (Murphy axiom)
As to unofficial gapps, I've been testing about 5 different 8.1 ROMs on the Moto G3 over the past couple months and if the gapps aren't built in to the ROM(some pixelexperience roms), all you can get is an unofficial gapps, or do a minor simple hack to an 8.0 so it will accept it. Usually devs will include it. Bless Alberto97 for not including it so I can select my own!!! But I've had no prob with gapps. Open gapps project has 8.0, but of course they won't work on a true 8.1 unless minor hack. I was planning on using open_gapps-arm64-8.1-aroma-20180109-UNOFFICIAL.zip (from https://cloud.kenzoroms.club/?dir=opengapps) unless you have a better idea. I wanted to grab camera from aroma(somebody's idea), but I also have about 5 other cameras and gcams waiting on the Sdcard that I want to test, simply because there seemed to be disagreement on what works on Alberto's new 8.1 build, so wanted to be able to report.
Thanks again!

Thanks for great link! yeah I think I used adb as well as an app last time. I'll add recovery this time so that's 3 backups on internal storage (and copied to PC) should be enough! (yes dear readers I am serious about this - 3 times! They are so tiny! And that pretty much guarantees I'll never need it, but if I do, it's childs play to get it back.)
Thanks!!!
If you're wondering about the delay, they sent me a -01 (Droid)(Murphy's law), so they paid for a UPS next day air label back to them(mailed at 4PM) - don't know if I'll get this going before Sat! Oh well!!! Never take these things too seriously!!! Gotta be costing them a chunk! I did briefly turn it on and stuck the SIM in it and it did show LTE on my ATT, but there's a few bands missing that are on the -02, so will wait. Pretty display, though!!! Really looking forward to it!!!

Good plan on sending it back. You would have been SOL trying to root the -01

yes. stock 8.x is a no-no. This one that is coming is 6.0.1 So I will let it ota update to 7.1.1 after giving it a thorough check-out, then try unlocking it, etc. Sound right? I have no interest in any of the hardware-type addons, just the plain phone 3/32 octacore etc. Why this one? - I love the reception (radio) strength of Motos, plus a ton of other things. I stick with them. Plus it's all Albeto97's fault for deving on AOSP 8.1
Lol Alberto97's roms are buttery smooth!

I think they are. He recently came out with an 8.1 AOSP version for the Moto G3 and I love it. I test others, but that's my daily driver. Sure not perfect, but quite good enough for me!!! So I figure when I get it (Tues?) that's what I'll put on it. There's always plenty of time to test others!
Okay, since I am waiting for phone (Tues) , obviously I am worried about "what-if"s and so researching on what to do, "if".
I succeeded in finding a nice zip for 7.1.1 with the Nov security patch
https://firmware.center/firmware/Motorola/Moto Z Play/Stock/
(I am US)(there are many others at that nice site!!!)
That took a lot of time.
Then I needed to be sure that I could get RSD lite to run, and tried and tried to no avail to get it to recognize my phone (even on my laptop) (I was testing with an old Moto G3 stock zip and my G3 phone) before some post gave me a version number much higher than at the RSD site. google gave me:
http://rsdlite.en.lo4d.com/
version 6.2.4, which worked perfectly.
I really need to write a short guide on this stuff - feels like I'm re-inventing the wheel, even though many folks have written much before I came along!
The reason for the above two is that for a while the last few days I kept running into folks who had taken 7 OTA and wound up with a bricked phone. So, yes, I just did a search for "brick" on xda in moto z play and will start reading them! LOL
Quick EDIT: I think I am wrong in that brick assumption - the first 3 I looked at involved encryption and 2 downgrades to MM (which is a no-no). I will read further.
edit2 - nevermind - most are downgrading to MM. Wish folks would just ask before doing that. That is a no-no of most (all?) phones. -

I have no problem with various cameras getting good image, but sometimes on still first pic doesn't save. ( tried camera MX and Professional camera hd. I'm sure lots work about the same.)
Forgot to flash Alberto's verity patch right after flashing TWRP. So I had to RSD lite 7.1.1 Nov 1 and start over - no big deal! OP corrected.
Hello Kris,
I would like to ask for a link where I can download a working RSD so I can unlocked my bootloader.
Thanks
