I am planning to have my batteries replaced because of the abysmal battery life I am getting and I am afraid that it's not even the software since I had it before Nougat. It has just degraded. So, the question is, what Android version should I put when the battery is replaced? Should I flash back to MM or stay with N? I'm currently using RR with f2fs.
Hi... Flash the ROM of your choice and move on... Isn't that the freedom a nexus offers?
There is plenty of evidence battery degradation issues are independent of the Android version. Just as many ppl with issues on MM who never upgraded to N. Run with the ROM of your choice.

On the plus side it's extremely easy to root the 6P and there is a lot of Dev support for ROMs and mods. It's also a powerful and smooth running device. Idle battery life improves if you install a custom ROM and Kernel but SOT battery life isn't great.
A small but significant number of 6P users are experiencing problems like the phone shutting down at 20% battery, random reboots and bootloops. I wouldn't purchase a used 6P unless it was refurbished and came with a full warranty from Huawei or Google.

ROM development is very active! Look around in the ROM section! Happy Flashing
I have Nexus 6p on MM 6.0.1. I was following the news about Nougat update and all the battery drain and shutdown problems. I read the whole thread on the battery life in the general section but I can't decide is it a software or hardware problem. Is there any sure method to detect if I will face those bugs or not? Plus, In case I face them, does using custom roms and kernels solve it?

There were battery drain issues on earlier versions of Nougat but the current build is pretty solid. Some people are reporting battery drain related to Facebook apps however, especially Facebook Messenger. Google says the boot loop and shutdown issues are hardware related. Since multiple people who RMA'd their phone to Huawei reported getting it back with a new motherboard that would seem to support Google's claim. There's no way I know of to predict if you will have problems but it does seem to be occurring more with earlier builds of the phone. You could get better or worse battery life with custom ROMs and kernels depending on what you use but the same problems are being reported on stock and custom roms. People are also reporting the boot loop of death on stock Marshmallow so not upgrading is no guarantee that you won't still eventually have problems. I run Cortex Rom which gives the 6p Pixel features and the Elemental kernel. I have no problems and would never go back to Marshmellow. But it's a personal choice in the end. The one legitimate reason you might want to stay on Marshmellow is that Xposed doesn't work on Nougat. Otherwise I would personally say go for it. Stock Nougat is pretty solid and there are some nice Nougat based custom ROMs for the 6P. Staying on Marshmallow seems like kind of a waste.
i am in the same position as the original poster: 100% stock on marshmellow. i never made any sort of upgrade to 7.0.
my phone was a google replacment from june, 2016. i have 89% life in my battery. everything works well.
i can get a replacement from either google or the manufacturer. google has an easier, quicker system. i will wait and see how it goes.
i am with verizon. has verizon ever finally approved 7.1.1. maybe 7.1.1 is ok to upgrade? i am sort of afraid. i am not really interested in playing or working on my phone--i am busy and just not my thing.
For now I am on ABC ROM oreo with Franco kernel, and having ok battery life getting probably around 12-16% drain per hour of use on screen time (fk kernel manager battery monitor) However I want to have best possible battery life.
Don't really care if missing some features, or security wise if that's so important.
Would downgrading from Oreo to instead Nougat, or Marshmallow be smart battery wise?
If I go to Nougat I will fix purenexus rom of course, but unsure if going from 8.1.0 (Oreo) to a lower android version would help getting the battery even better?
Ive been trying to go down that road myself. currently trying CHROMA, (MM) been going pretty well... Sots been better than oreo, but its deepsleep hasnt so ive been trying to fix that.
Hi, i have SM-N910U device and the original new battery. But, why my battery draining so fast? Currently i using MM 6.0.1 official. Not rooted device. I’ve done lot of things to keep battery stable. But it seems not working. The battery drained so fast. This is malfunctioned of seri U or what? Thanks for the answer
What do you mean by "original new battery"? Do you mean the original battery that came with the phone? Or you have recently purchased an "original new battery"?
If you have recently purchased a battery it is almost guaranteed not to be an original Samsung battery as they do not make them any more - it is probably fake. Buy a RavPower battery and see how it goes. Same if you're still using the battery that originally came with the phone - get a RavPower. You might also want to try a factory reset and set your phone up clean again - this made a big difference to mine about a year ago when my battery was draining fast.

Three possible curlpits: Your apps, the battery, or the firmware
Battery—fake battery will die fast, according to what others say
Apps—some apps are battery hungry, so find a way to hibernate those with Greenify or Hibernation Manager
Software—Android 6 is the last and worst update for performance and battery life. While it's on KitKat (4.4), its battery life was awesome; fast forward to Lollipop (5.0.1–5.1.1), from 12 hours of Screen On Time (SOT), it got decreased to 8 hours; and fast forward again to Marshmallow (6.0.1), it became from 8 hours to 3 hours. No matter what kernel or battery-saving methods you use, it's futile for a firmware that rots a powerful phone. The only way to fix this is by either using a custom ROM (Refined Nougat, Note 5/7 ported ROMs, etc.), or downgrading your firmware. (Installing KitKat with the latest bootloader prevents you from downgrading).
With a new battery on MM stock and unrooted I was getting 6 hours SOT (Exynos). Dropped off now after using the battery for 18 months, but soon upgrading to Note 9 or 10 anyway.
Hello, I am experiencing some issues with my battery. I replaced the battery with a genuine one directly from Samsung. It is quite better than the old one but still can't get over 4-5 hours of SOT. And my phone does not last to the end of the day, often have to plug it in at work or school. I have the newest one ui 4.1 version. Should I downgrade do an older version or install a custom rom? Maybe also recommend a Rom for s10+ that has great battery life? Or is this just a software bug/glitch? Any help appreciated
Either optimize what you got or go back to what worked (easiest). A custom rom opens a whole new can of worms... really it's your call. Bigger, radical changes will require more of your time to try and get it running right.
Upgrades/updates can and do break things.
This stock N10+ is still running on Pie. It's current load is over 2 year old. Still fast, and stable with minimal maintenance.
