I have Nexus 6p on MM 6.0.1. I was following the news about Nougat update and all the battery drain and shutdown problems. I read the whole thread on the battery life in the general section but I can't decide is it a software or hardware problem. Is there any sure method to detect if I will face those bugs or not? Plus, In case I face them, does using custom roms and kernels solve it?

There were battery drain issues on earlier versions of Nougat but the current build is pretty solid. Some people are reporting battery drain related to Facebook apps however, especially Facebook Messenger. Google says the boot loop and shutdown issues are hardware related. Since multiple people who RMA'd their phone to Huawei reported getting it back with a new motherboard that would seem to support Google's claim. There's no way I know of to predict if you will have problems but it does seem to be occurring more with earlier builds of the phone. You could get better or worse battery life with custom ROMs and kernels depending on what you use but the same problems are being reported on stock and custom roms. People are also reporting the boot loop of death on stock Marshmallow so not upgrading is no guarantee that you won't still eventually have problems. I run Cortex Rom which gives the 6p Pixel features and the Elemental kernel. I have no problems and would never go back to Marshmellow. But it's a personal choice in the end. The one legitimate reason you might want to stay on Marshmellow is that Xposed doesn't work on Nougat. Otherwise I would personally say go for it. Stock Nougat is pretty solid and there are some nice Nougat based custom ROMs for the 6P. Staying on Marshmallow seems like kind of a waste.
i am in the same position as the original poster: 100% stock on marshmellow. i never made any sort of upgrade to 7.0.
my phone was a google replacment from june, 2016. i have 89% life in my battery. everything works well.
i can get a replacement from either google or the manufacturer. google has an easier, quicker system. i will wait and see how it goes.
i am with verizon. has verizon ever finally approved 7.1.1. maybe 7.1.1 is ok to upgrade? i am sort of afraid. i am not really interested in playing or working on my phone--i am busy and just not my thing.

Just wondering for those running android m whether there are any problems with the builds? For example, camera crashing, screen blank on wakeup, wifi issues, battery drain, and memory issues requiring reboot every week, etc. Basically, any issues with android m on n4?
I would like to upgrade, but I'm hesitant based on my experiences with the official lollipop release (I went back to kitkat).
Thanks.
With a Nexus in your hand, there's only one way to move and it's a no-brainer which way!
I have been on Marshmallow for almost a month now and it's pretty stable and a little faster than stock 5.1.1 (in loading apps as to what i feel). Battery life became an issue at first when wifi ate up all the battery. Resolved it later by disabling wifi scanning. No major issues now.
Give it a try, you'll probably like it.

A no brainer tbh the best (for me I use Minimal) I have ever had on my mako
I started playing with M when the alpha builds came out. I eventually settled with the 'Pure Nexus Project'.
Never had a problem so far... <knock on wood>
Thanks for all your replies. Time to get back into the rooting and flashing routine!
Hello everyone!
So I have been having these battery issues since April security patch. the phone gets really warm to the touch even by doing the simplest of things like browsing and watching youtube. Android OS keeps the phone awake 80% of the time and I am only getting 2-3 hours of use throughout the day. Restored the phone to factory settings(fresh start, nothing restored) three days ago and still the same issue. Android OS drains the battery life even though I made sure that only google apps are installed on the phone.
But today things got even weirder. I disabled Google Now and location services as a test and the battery drain and heat issues were gone temporarily. I was getting a great battery performance from morning to afternoon. I check my battery stats and I notice that Google services mysteriously drained 17% of my battery life and that it's been running for 21 days straight? That's impossible since I just did a fresh reset to the phone three days ago. I rebooted the phone and that "Google services" drain changed to WiFi instead?! That's crazy!
I contacted Google store support team and they have been really helpful so far. They offered to replace the phone with a refurbished unit, but I don't think I am ready to give up on this phone just yet.
Thank you!

I hate to recommend this, but sometimes things go out of wack after a SW update, so a hard reset would probably be needed. I would try that (just start from zero) before jumping into a refurbished phone that might have some other kind of issues. Have you tried a hard reset yet? I see that you did a fresh reset. Did you go through the recovery though? Not just the regular UI. I think it's better to clear cache, and every thing through the recovery (custom or stock).

I did it through recovery. I have cleared the cache and rebooted the phone several times the past few days. Nothing seems to help at all.
Turn off your google backup.

Wow. Maybe a custom ROM might help? Have you tried that? That's the last thing I would do. Good luck!
Not recommended but I just flashed January vendor and ROM and that has helped my battery life. I. Believe it is the security updates that kill our battery.

Is it a widespread issue? Like I said in my post, I saw the decline ever since I got the April security update. The May patch actually managed to make things worse. There seems to be something hidden in the OS that it's draining the battery and causing the awake issues. I haven't tried rooting the device because I lack the experience to do so. I will probably look into it on these forums, but at this point I have tried everything.
Disabling Google now helped a lot and it exposed some sort of a glitch with the stock battery monitoring app. I am not sure if it's hardware or software, but it's certainly not normal. I am tempted to just replace it, but I am afraid that this issue will just plague the new one from Google. I am really disappointed How Google handles updates on this device. I always thought that stock android is most stable version of android, but the software on my old Xperia Z is actually more stable than this. It never had battery drain issues and standby battery life was always great. The battery life on Nexus 6P is actually worse than the Xperia Z even though that phone is 3 years old.

I've seen a lot of posts over the months with people having the same problem we are. I came from a mid range LG stylo with a snapdragon 610. I would have 8 hours screen on time daily. Its sad that goggle cant get the same out of their own hardware. Also I have seen that the Note 5 and S7 Edge both get better battery life as opposed to our stock phones. For as much as people praise stock and look down on Touchwiz, they are doing something right over there.
But it doesn't affect everyone and that what puzzles me. Only certain phones are hit by these issues, while other people are getting excellent battery life. I have seen plenty of people post screenshots of 6 hours+ of on screen time. I am lucky to get 3 hours. I think Google should really invest in creating a better power management system into Android. Companies like Sony and Samsung built their own and the battery life on their devices always perform predictably relative to what I am seeing on this phone. I have never witnessed The doze feature kick in since I have bought this phone. Sony had stamina mode since 2013 and it actually worked.

Most of those people posting those outrageous number root and do kernel tweaks. I've gotten at most 6 hours SOT on stock without root. You are right our phones do all react differently to certain circumstances. I don't know if it's feasible to you ,but you should try rooting and trying out a few Roms some help others don't. If you aren't into Roms and decide to root try earlier vendors and stock roms and see it those work. I'm not an expert by any means just my suggestions.

Well, the fact that you are having great battery life proves my point. It's either that the quality control of the batteries used on these phones are terrible, or that the software or kernel are corrupted from factory causing these issues. There is no way to fix them by hard reseting the phone so far. I am going to try to flash a stock rom on this device and see what happens. Thanks by the way.
1) Are you rooted? If not, at least do that and install BBS in order to track down what's eating your battery.
2) Probably we'll run into a common problem / bug the last two months.
After unplugging the phone, it seems that the wakelock *backup* runs constantly, does not let phone get into sleep, and runs in the background while using your phone causin battery to drain faster.
3) About battery life. Comparing battery results between two users it has no point, unless you really now his usage pattern. Not only the setup, but which apps of them used most etc.
For example Facebook app is real battery eater. I've seen an hour more SOT without this app.
I can give several examples like this.

Hi guys, I have bought a nexus 6P secondhand but I'm dealing with the problem of random shutdowns. After that it won't boot unless it is hooked to a charger. Some facts that I think might be of some influence or what I have tried:
- I bought it with Cyanogenmod 14.1, first day flashed back to stock 7.0 but kept my bootloader unlocked;
- Today I flashed an OTA update to 7.1.1;
- It happens random while using the phone, but I manage to reproduce the failure when using Google Camera and take pictures very rapidly (don't really know what the phone activity is at that moment)
- I've got a new battery on the way, might that be the issue?
- Battery status (percentage etc) doesn't make a difference. Might as well happen at 100%
- It doesn't happen while on the charger;
- It didn't happen in safe mode (didn't test this for too long though, but the fast camera action didn't kill the phone;
Does these descriptions make any bells rinkle? For me it looks like a defective battery but I'm happy to hear some expert about this
Thank you all for reading!
Yup, mine does the same thing. I believe it is supposed to be fixed with the new 7.1 release. Its the most inconvenient thing ever. I rarely takes pics now because nobody has a usb-c charger to get my phone turned back on. I'm running stock 7.0. It's not your battery.
Well that would kinda suck, I just updated to 7.1.1 and the problem is still there. Do you have a source for this thing?
I had the same random reboots.
I too suffered from random reboots in 7.1.1 dp2. They increased in frequency gradually. One night, it stuck in bootloop. Couldn't even boot into recovery. Browsed through threads here and reddit posts. All said the only solution was to RMA as without recovery nothing is possible. Huawei is replacing the motherboard as it's under warranty.
I just updated to 7.1.1 and I also can still confirm it's happen. I called huawei and they told me it was a software issue and it's not resolved and there is no fix other than to load 6.x on the phone. So basically, I we have a turd of a phone and nobody seems to want to fix it. Google told me it was a hardware issue and now Hauwei tells me it's a software issue. Maybe it's time for a new phone.
Just curious but have any of you flashed the official release images directly from Google through ADP with the FlashAll.bat command that it includes? Keeping your bootloader unlocked, but flashing everything to make sure your device is 100% stock and as fresh as it can be?
Messing with OTA's and other stuff like CM, I would definitely flash it this way and test it bone stock before venturing back into the Custom Rom land as major OS changes (from 6.0 to 7.0, etc) always seem to have residual glitches just like this.

I loaded the image directly from google. I've never rooted or loaded a rom on this phone. I've only run factory images. I don't have the time to tinker like I used to.
Well that is downright strange then. There really doesn't seem to be any device that doesn't at least have a small share of mystery in some of it's problems is there? Lol.
Well that was how I reverted from CM to stock 7.0, by using the flash-all function (even though the flash all didn't work, had to flash the seperate files, but result was the same). The 7.1.1 upgrade was with a OTA flash using ADB sideload because I was rooted and TWRP recovery was active, so the OTA update didn't work for me. To be honest, I don't think my problem is a software issue. Is there any 'deeper' software than the complete rom? Is the kernel flashed seperately?

This fiasco has been happening for tons of people for weeks now, including me. Mine was just 2 weeks out of warranty, both google and huawei are pointing fingers at each other and nobody cares. I have tried all the methods possible, to flash different versions of pure factory image, nothing worked.
What charger did everyone use to get it backup a running?
Mine just shutdown this morning and using the USB A-to-C cable on a computer/car/wall outlet it didn't even recognize it was plugged. Google wants to RMA it (third one in 14 months of ownership) and I'm fighting over their 5 days delivery time for a new one.
also face this problem previously and Huawei replace battery. just 1 week before the warranty run out

Every charger worked for me. Now even carry a powerbank with me for when it lets me down outdoors I can get it powered on again. Plugging it in the PC also works just fine. Even a standard samsung charger (with micro-usb -> usb C adapter) works.
hah! Mine just started doing this!
I got the phone back from huawei for the 15% battery issue.. and it came back with this issue after going to 7.1.1
Strange! Mine doesn't seem to be related to any firmware state. It had this with CM14.1, stock 7.0 (factory image), and 7.1.1 (OTA flash). The only thing that is in common is that the bootloader is unlocked. Can this have any influence?

Mine is locked, on 7.0 I didn't have this issue.. on 7.1.1 It started.
on developer previews for it wasn't an issue either..
This is the absolute worst. Phones dying consistently at 15%. Sometimes it'll even shut down at like 30-40%. Absolutely ridiculous. I'm getting a new phone.

That seems to be another know defect, you should look it up on here. Plenty of people are having that problem, but it is different from this thread.
I am having the same problem too! I was trying to raise this for two times on both XDA and reddit and no body seemed to care until you came up with this!
Mine randomly happens when taking photos with HDR+ and with the battery less than 50% (based on my observation). I replaced the battery by myself not long ago though.
Huawei says going back to 6.0.1 will fix the issue... and is blaming google, saying their pixel devices have this issue on 7.1.1 too.
I am planning to have my batteries replaced because of the abysmal battery life I am getting and I am afraid that it's not even the software since I had it before Nougat. It has just degraded. So, the question is, what Android version should I put when the battery is replaced? Should I flash back to MM or stay with N? I'm currently using RR with f2fs.
Hi... Flash the ROM of your choice and move on... Isn't that the freedom a nexus offers?
There is plenty of evidence battery degradation issues are independent of the Android version. Just as many ppl with issues on MM who never upgraded to N. Run with the ROM of your choice.
I loved my Moto X Pure. Got it unlocked from Motorola and used it on AT&T for years. Then came the OTA to Nougat. At first, was excited to get the update like everyone else. Then weird issues started. Battery not lasting as long. Phone would hang a lot. Phone would freeze then soft reboot. Ring and SMS tones would sound like they were being bogged down. LOTS of problems. I have wiped the phone and cache completely many times from Recovery mode. Check to see if it was any apps doing the issues. Was doing this ever since 7.0 was OTA on my Moto X Pure. When I had 6.0.1, it was great. Sure, battery charge was still lower than other phones but it never missed a beat. Would LOVE to bring it back to 6.0.1 and use it until it is really not usable anymore as I am not able to buy a new phone (disabled, hard to get a job, living on SSI).
I have read some threads and many were stating you cannot go back and if you did to 6.0, you have to go right back to 7.0. Is this true? If so, guess my smartphone life is at its end. lol
UPDATE: After much research, found out I can go back to MM but don't do the OTA and all will be good. I am guessing from the forums that everyone has moved on from this phone. Which sucks as the phone itself is still good just the official 7.0 update is terrible, as per original post. And not seeing anymore dev work on custom root ROMs either. Would love to have the money to just buy a new phone but 2 things bother me doing that (actually 3, the 3rd is I am poor ). One, the phone is still physically great. Has plenty of RAM and power to run all apps today. And two, I hate the throwaway society that is now. Wasting rare resources and making so much trash all over with tech that is still usable. And why phones are so damn expensive now.
Anyways, guess I can do the MM 6.0.1 downgrade and somehow make the notification to OTA update go away or use N 7.0 and have to factory reset the phone every 1 to 2 months.
nothing is wrong with 7.0, i bought my pure refurbished off eBay and battery sot was just over an hour and i thought it was 7.0. i downgraded to 6.0 and nothing changed, so i went back to 7.0 and there you have it the phone bricked via the ota. i followed the sd card boot to repair the boot loader and the flash stock 7.0 again, lesson learned. long story short i got a new battery off ifixit with the tool kit and i'm getting 5 1/2 sot with no lag. for more battery time, nfc off, location services set to WiFi battery saving with GPS off and radio set to 3G not LTE. it's the 2k screen resolution that is the battery killer imo, just my 2 cents.
Sometimes it just a bad update, and reflashing the same full firmware will fix issues.
