I'm using the newest flash kernel and elementalex kernel manager. Its been happening more and more. This time its stuck at max frequency on the big cluster. Everything else I can change like normal. What is causing this? I'm about to lose my mind with this crap. Its happened in several roms too. Right now I'm on screwd android nougat.

Do you have Facebook or Facebook Messenger installed? The latter app especially has been known to cause Max frequency problems for some people.
I do have those apps. But this is when im first setting up a new rom so they are not installed yet. It is also stuck overclocked when it happens. It finally let me change it this time. I have no clue as to why it does eventually let me but not at first. It didn't used to do this on previous version of flash kernel. I also tried changing it with another kernel app and it let me, no problem. Its something about exkm.

After rebooting or flashing files, the phone runs warm which means you cannot tweak CPU functions due to thermal throttling. The phone throttles when hot (worse if you live in a warm environment) or have low battery. That's a side effect of the Snapdragon 810.
If these issues persist half an hour or more after boot, then there is an app keeping your CPUs clocked high, like mentioned before.

That cant be it. I can close exkm and open other cpu tuner app and immediately change the max frequency.

Keep it simple then. Uninstall then install EXKM from the Play Store and reboot. Open the app after two minutes then grant root access and modify kernel settings. Big cluster may still be offline due to rebooting.
Alternatively, clear data for EXKM and reboot then wait until it's been granted root permissions to modify kernel settings.

For solving your issue, use Kernel Adiutor, go into thermal on the side menu, and disable throttling. - this worked for me
Secondly, I do not recommend Screw'd, it left me well screwed.
- Home screen locking up, only being functional after rebooting
- VERY bad CPU over heating - I'm taking about 180°F - 82°C -while running social media and scrolling. And actually having to physically put the phone on ice to cool it down while I pulled files when I switched off of the ROM
- Random systemui crashes, kind of like CM all over again
I don't know if you get these issues, but I would recommend using a different ROM from my experience.

Wow, i cant believe screwd gives you such problems. Its has been my favorite nougat rom since last months beta. My phone never overheats. Ive only felt it get warm to the touch a few times since i got it last march. As far as throttling goes, if it does i never notice so it must not be too bad.

I've been experiencing some problems with the recent ROM's ive installed on my SG3. The thing is when i play music and switch ON\OFF the screen, i hear a weird static cracking noise. This bug has been reported to occur due to a bug in the kernel of the ROM's.
Kyrillo and dharam have admitted that the problem exists in their kernels and that they are trying hard to fix it.
My question is how many of the users who installed custom ROM's on their phones encountered this problem? Did anybody find a fix?
This is probably my 5th thread concerning the same problem in the kernels and yet i don't have a clear answer!

Yes but why have the irritating noise in the first place? It kinda ruins the music experience, just hope someone's working on fixing this.
So, I have an idea.
If I use profiles in SetCPU, with a dramatic change of frequency space, different to the normal running frequencies, than it seems to me that the switch cracked noise is heavier than without using profiles.
Normal: 148-930MHz, ScreenOff: 148-370 --> makes hard noise
Normal: 148-930MHz, NO Profile --> barely noise, but there
Kyrillos 6.x was my first high OC ROM, so I definitly used SetCPU and wanted to cut down the power consumption by using "ONDEMAND".
That failed completly! Cause with ondemand I got quiet the same noise as mentioned from you guys, but AT ALL TIMES!
The difference between conservative and ondemand is, that frequency is realy more rapidly changed! So for every single cpu usage, it goes high up but realy fast back to 148 again. --> In mind: Many freq changes!
Back to my idea. For me it is the frequency changing, maybe the voltage jump between the frequencies. I guess there is the problem digged.
A chance to get rid of this may be to change frequencys in an other way. Maybe not with steps, but with a real smooth upgoing MHz per MHz...if that is impossible, I think so because even computer cpus are chaning step to step, the voltage increasing/deincreasing should be made smooth. No idea how, but this is my thought^^

That seems like a logical conclusion, that by changing the degree to which the frequencies change the noise could be controlled.

I notice it too, i think this is exactly what happens whihc results in the noise. Dev's are you listening?
I really hope that somebody comes up with a solution.
Need a quick fix for this, it's driving me nuts. Degrading to any stock firmware (eclair or froyo) isn't working at all!

Has everybody encountered after doing some intensive stuff like doing AnTuTu benchmark, the phone abruptly slows down to a crawl where animations slow down like rotation being damn slow, swiping through screens also is slow, and games being damn slow. For instance, I ran AnTuTu benchmark and it won't go higher than 30FPS. where usually it's 40 - 60 FPS.
This is not the typical lag I encounter.
The only way to solve this is to restart the phone. Sometimes restarting the phone once is not enough.
This sounds fishy. Never happened to me before. Although will try again once I download Antutu.
Edit: Just checked... Ran Antutu. Got a score of 6474. Everything seems fine. After quitting Antutu, scrolled through the homescreens. Everything was smooth as before.
Edit2: Ran Antutu again & got a score of 6502. Tried playing ShadowGun immediately afterwards. It ran without any hiccups...

Turn off the power saving mode and you should notice a big improvement in lag.
I get around 56fps running AnTuTu with system power saving off.With power saving on,I only get 27fps.A big difference.
Could this be an overheating issue? Your cpu might be throttling coz of high temps.

This is not only because of AnTuTu, this only happens when I'm running an intensive app, where suddenly after exiting it will slow down to a crawl.
The most annoying part is the rotation animation. It is devastating slow.

I'm not sure because the phone also isn't hot at that time.
I haven't seen this issue either with benchmark apps or with intensive games. Might be an issue specific to your device. What rom is it running?

I'm currently on ROMOW 5.1, previously using ROCKET ROM since V9.
I never had this issue on Stock ROM's.
Both custom ROM's I used had this issue.

What sort of "intensive app"? Is it still running in the background?
If you have an app that uses a lot of memory, and then immediately try to use another memory intensive app, you may the OS begins to run low on memory as the garbage collector may not have run yet.

After playing GTA 3, Modern Combat 3, Asphalt 6, I will have this issue.
Killing the tasks on task manager won't help, neither cleaning memory.

I have exactly same problem, my phone starts to lag randomly example in browser.
First its super smooth and then suddenly it kind of turns off gpu acceleration and starts to lag.
Even cm9 alpha doesnt have this problem so it's wery strange issue. And its there on every phone my friend also noticed it.
this is an issue with mali driver on note.
the gpu clock have two clockspeed that is 160mhz and 267mhz.
during that time when u run the benchmark the gpu clock to 160 and only utilise half of the mali power.
this had been explained by tegrak, creator of tegrak app.
the only solution is reboot and rerun the test or flash fm 2.0 that is clock min to 200mhz or flash tegrak kernel (can find at tegrak 2nd core in android dev forum) and use tegrak overclock app to lock the gpu to 267mhz.

We don't have the same problem. The browser thing I think everyone has that problem. Mine is a rare issue where it affects the entire OS.

CM9 is awesome, but I can't live without the video player.
It is same problem i have exactly same impact, everything becomes lagyer. Same thing with every note.
The browser was only sample where you can notice it.
I can hereby confirm that Tegrak Kernel Build 31 is able to resolve the issue after setting the minimum GPU clock to 267mhz on Overclock Ultimate.
FM Kernel 2.0 doesn't solve the issue.
Is the phone hot after running this intensive app? The Note will guard itself against high temps.

One of my favorite things about the Note: No hotness!!! I had this issue all the time with the SGSII to the point that I couldn't hold it to me ear. My Note doesn't even get warm! So happy.
i am on a stock phone and seen enough force closures in the last week and more than enough in the last 48h. i was just showing my daughter the live wallpapers, so was just flipping through various ones, after flipping through them quickly and setting it, the phone froze, was not able to do anything for about half and hour as phone was booting and rebooting with me unable to even switch off the phone. luckily, at one point i just was able to change wall paper to the black wall paper available on the market and it sorted itself out. it has done this twice whle flipping through live wall papers quickly. the wll papers i was flipping through were flames, weather windmills, aquariium, 3d wall paper, most came with the phone with the exception of flames and black wallpaper.
the phone is fine now but OTG function is flaky, dont know if it is the connector, so have ordered a samsung otg from amazon now and will find out whether it is the phone or the cable.
the built in file manager has serious lag issues as it keeps 'processing' after changing every folder and have stopped using that now and use other free ad supported versions instead which have no problems. same with stock video player which keeps force closing often, so use mxplayer or dice player without issues.
an expensive phone like this should work stock apps fine and not require third party apps for video playing and file browsing etc. was on the verge of returning it when it froze but seems ok now.
I faced this annoying problem where earphones made crackling sound randomly while playing music only while screen was off.
I saw another thread where people faced same problem in S III, but no definite solution.
FIX :
You need to be rooted.
Just change your CPU governer to "On Demand".
Mine was set to 'pegasusq'. I believe it forces CPU into low power mode while the screen is off and CPU frequency becomes so low that read speed of music files reduced.
Above FIX resolved my issue. I wanted to share so that anyone suffering from same issue can be benifited.

If you are rooted, then just download any CPU monitoring app. I personally use Rom Toolbox. In CPU/Processor settings in the app, you will find "Governer" and a list of available governers to choose from. Let me know if you still have trouble finding it.
TIP : Don't set Governer to "Powersave" even for trying it out. You wil find your fone lagging extremely.
Also don't play around much with other CPU settings unless you are absolutely sure what are you doing.

There actually isn't a need for changing the whole governor.
Download trickster mod from google play and in that change hotplug_min_CPU_lock to 2 whenever you want to listen to music, and change it back to 0 afterwards. Ondemand causes lags under heavy load and can be a battery drainer too. Pegasusq is multicore aware and can scale the cores depending on load and hotplug threshold defined by min wake CPU frequency or run queue length, and thus is more liberal on battery too, while providing a good performance at same time.

Yes that is, some CPU tweakers define it as hotplug min CPU lock

Hello, I am using agni kernel. I don't find ondemand governer in this latest version. Any workaround for this? I am really worried about the freaky noise that I get while listening to my favorite music.

Well that really works and I still can't figure out what caused the issue. I was in resurrection remix 5.7.4 with no agni and it was doing all good.. I am now in Eclipse v9 with agni kernel set to all default except the touch wake. I am seeing no such problem any more.
May be Kernel is what that is making that freaky noise..

Is changing audio IC easy to end user? I can access the board to its core and have tried another flex to check if it is problem with earphones jack. Can you please let me know how to get the IC changed.

Hi I'm highly satisfied with my oneplus 5 and I like to show off my benchmark scores. Recently my benchmark has only been around a little over 150k when I use to score 185k sometimes 190k. Anyone know why this is? I do have xposed framework installed but I even switched my Rom and tested it and still got only 155k. I don't notice any drops in performance I would just like to know what the issue may be. Thanks guys

Your processor scores significantly less than it should, usually it scores around 40000 on the oneplus 5.
Maybe it's underclocked?

Most probably the highest frequency of big.little is stuck at an lower frequency. Go to developer options in ROM and turn on overscale CPU usage, then run Antutu again and see what's the highest frequency(s) you got while running. If it doesnt go above 2457mhz (cluster 2) than it makes sense why your score is low. Also check your "i/o" scheduler and "read ahead buffer size" in your kernel tweak app. This can also affect your score.
Besides all this, don't run Antutu with low battery this affects the score for sure.

reflash, keep it clean, full charge, put it in the freezer pluged-in. andddd hit 188000 :good:
I wouldn't get too caught up in the whole benchmarks thing. They don't always translate to real world performance; I would rather show off my phone's snappy interface (i.e. quick app loading, navigating menus, etc.)
I personally think that's worth showing off more than just numbers that appear on an app!
Just my two cents though, you're free to disagree and do what makes you happy of course

Yea I don't notice any less performance so I'm not too worried about it. I do wonder how my big cluster got set to 1.9 ghz tho as I haven't messed with the tuning of my kernel seems to try to set it as default. But like I said I have xposed, a couple of audio mods, and gravity box. I'm bound to have some unwanted side effects from it.

Fair points! Kind of off-topic but I'm just curious as to how you went about installing Xposed? Are you using the Magisk module or did you flash via TWRP?

It is an option to flash with xXx Rom but Ive flash the purify xposed zip via TWRP. I've also used the systemless xposed from magisk but I believe it only works if you already have xposed installed.
Just wondering if this is common or not, mainly PUBG runs sluggish even on the lowest graphics setting.

I also tried pubg and yes, it's too damn laggy. lowering the resolution to 720p didn't help much. i guess i have to see how it runs on another device to be sure it's not a crappy app (Even though it looks like it)
I though the same thing, wish there was a easy way of lowering like on Samsung roms.

if you're willing to use the navbar (or mipop if you're on stock), it's as simple as making a couple of shell scripts that change density and resolution, then adding widgets for them. Since probably nobody is looking at the capacitive buttons bug this will probably be the only way to do it
The main problem for gpu intensive games is that they start to lag more the longer u play. Its because (at least on stock roms) the kernel throttles the cpu and gpu way too aggressively at a certain temperature. Same happens to hearthstone.
At beginning i can play a few rounds with 40-60fps, but after some time the kernel throttles the cpu and gpu down by alot even though the device itself only just got a bit warm. Main issue is throttling happens way too soon by way too much. And well some games are not well optimized and dont clear graphic cache often enough. Hearthstone for example has this issue, even if device is cooled, the game drops fps (not as much as with throttling tho) if too many graphical stuff loaded into the graphical ram over time (at least thats how i think it is)

I play PUBG on stock ROM after basically disabling CPU GPU thermal throttling and adjusting the governors to use the full frequency range accordingly. Having a fan of any sort, even a small usb powered one blowing air on the back up to a meter will keep the battery under around 50degC. The aluminum unibody cools effectively and efficiently with the help of a fan. I use a Tasker task to change the CPU limits and other optimizations before playing.
After eliminating the processor bottleneck the game can run on high settings smoothly. However the game uses 1GB of RAM on high settings that I've tested and the device lags under around 500Mb of free RAM on stock's OOM configuration. So free RAM needs to be able to reach at least 1.5Gb to not cause slow downs. Having already debloated and using greenify with and root commands to disable background user processes, I can play without RAM being an issue. I monitor free RAM and other hardware in real time to check these function without issue.
Having now removed both those bottlenecks I found there's still some lag that can develop after the phone has been playing for a few games or after standby overnight uptime. I've only just started testing changes to Virtual Memory thinking it might be a delay caused there. But the post quote above gave me the thought it could be GPU video memory related. Anyone know where to check in the kernel for how much RAM is reserved for GPU on the Axon 7?
I also gave the resolution lowering trick a little try and that didn't seem to improve performance at all. I'm still on B32.

Tbh thats quite an interesting thread for ppl that have either heating issues and want to lower voltages and edit throttling levels or for ppl that would like to have a more consistent performance when gaming. As you mentioned in that thread, i too renamed the 2 thermal config files with .bak at the end. Will test later to see the results.
But i think you could maybe update the thread with a guide for like:
-ppl that want to preserve battery life
-ppl that want to get more consistent performance
-and ppl that want to have a good mix between performance and battery life.
Also in that thread you mentioned disabling vdd restriction (like through kernel adiutor i guess). Is this necessary to really see the full effect of renaming the thermal engine files to .bak? I ask because i saw that inside the thermal engine files, there are also entries for vdd monitoring. So in the end would disabling vdd restriction actually do something? (Since the values from thermal engine files won't be applied at boot anymore after renaming them)

I get some lag even in Angry Birds 2, never had this on my Sony Xperia XZ Premium. The reason is due to throttling from over heating.
The phone does indeed get hot after some heavy gaming and this is when throttling starts and causing some lag.

That's some useful suggestions. For each point
- I've already shared that function. Just modify to a lower voltage you prefer. In terms of using it in combo with throttling disabled, that can be more advanced.
- Consistent like powerful? Need to tweak values in the file for full performance. Personally I've edited several profiles of various CPU GPU configs to range from light games to heavy executable from Tasker.
- Really a matter of preference. There isn't really a perfect middle ground. That's why vendors are offering power mode switches for normal use and gaming. Problem there is ZTE's is shipped broken and others still have decided limits. Which as my previous point, I use a basic profile for normal use and switch to suit based on the gaming demand. The method in that thread alone is inefficient as it's moderately powerful but isn't power saving for example.

Well a guide might be useful for many users. Maybe also what your setup in tasker is.
Personally im usually not that into graphic intensive mobile games (except for like shadowgun legends, cool game imo).
I mean i play games while watching youtube or any series sometimes. But its still annoying when games start to lag after like 10 minutes already.
I also play hearthstone alot on my axon 7 since i used to play it alot on my laptop (sadly the game lags way too much now on my laptop due to weak hardware, hence why i play it on mobile now).
About the consistent performance i mentioned earlier, yes i meant as in powerful which keeps the performance without dropping down.
Sadly the performance governor isnt a big help since the aggressive throttling is still active, which makes the governor quite useless if it cant keep up the cpu clock at max.
Anyway, from what i noticed after renaming the 2 thermal files, shadowgun legends for example runs better for a longer period of time than before (it takes longer before the game starts to drop frames significantly)

With most GPU intensive apps and games like PUBG and Daydream View, I have to disable the Night Light. It provides a noticeable difference in performance.
