Anyone else experiencing this? In the 24 hours I've been using my nexus 10, this has happened at least 10 times. All of a sudden the device becomes unresponsiv, the screen dims until it turns off, and the only way to get the device back on is holding down the power key multiple times until it boots back up. Needless to say, quite frustrating. Otherwise, love this device.

Not quite sure how one loves a device that forces you to reboot ten times in the last 24 hrs. It's like buying a new Honda and loving it even though it stalls ten times a day.
Too many people apparently buy their device to adoringly stare at like a trophy or a collectors item than actually use.
Those all seem like pretty legitimate apps to me. This would suck but I would suggest deleting one app and using the tablet till it happens then rinse repeat till you find the offending program.

Add me to the list of people with random freezes and reboots. It's happened to me 3 times since I've gotten the tablet a few days ago, and I was using a different app each time. I suspect it's an OS bug rather than an app that's causing it. It's a little disheartening that Google let their new flagship 10" device get released with such a bug. Hopefully they release an OTA update sooner rather than later.
For the record, I rooted using the flashable CWM SuperSU file - I did not use the toolkit.
I have had my 16gb 10 now for almost a week - currently stock and non rooted. No problems whatsoever and I have been working it pretty hard.
Mine has frozen 2-3 times in the past few days. No idea why either. Audio continues to play, and the device responds to button use, but the display stops altogether.

I got mine like a week ago and it's been frustrating. I debated whether to return it or not. I really like the Nexus 10 but this has been really inconvenient. Does CM10.1 have the issue coz I am planning on rooting and flashing CM10.1 if it resolves the issue. Just trying to get an input.

Happened to me several times as well. Last time the screen went black (not off) and the tablet was extremely hot, to the point of burning my hand when I touched it! Seems it was stuck that way for several hours and didn't reboot itself.
I've been having random rebooting and freezes since getting this tablet i've replaced it three times already so i'm tired of calling google about it don't even think they have a solution because we've been waiting since November for them to fix this problem so i decide to turn off location and took HD widgets out and so far my tablet has not frozen or rebooted in two weeks it been working really well hope it continues to perform this way.
Chrome has major stability issues as far as I can tell. It crashes very frequently and causes a complete system lock-up when it does. I've resorted to Firefox. To me, this is absurd on a core first party app. Google: get your act together on Chrome.
I recently noticed this issue and have been reading what a lot of others here have had to say and so far it seems to be related to wifi. I would bet it's a software / kernel / driver issue because others have reported not having the problem before the latest update.
If I think about it, I probably had the lockup/reboot happen once before now and I can't really tell you what I was doing at the time. But I thought nothing of it. I have however found a way to force it to happen. All it takes is a large download (1gig'ish) in uTorrent, the download works fine for about 10 minutes and then the tablet either just restarts, or it first becomes unresponsive to input (screen or buttons) but is still functioning, followed by a hard lock up that can only be fixed with a forced power off.
It may be a buffer issue, or memory leak, I've been able to prolong the lockup by throttling the uTorrent download speed and minimizing the number of active apps running. As suggested in other threads I've disabled location discovery and it may have bought me a little more time but if so it's not much. I can't tell if it's because of the amount of constant data flow coming in, or the number of active connections to different seeders, or more likely a combination of the 2. I can also say that if I attempt to browse the web with either chrome or Dolphin while downloading in uTorrent the freeze or reset happens much quicker.
So for now I'm hoping that in the next update they resolve the issue and will just use my pc for torrent downloading.
T.D.K,
It may help Google resolve this issue if you reported your obvervations in this bug report thread:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39879
I think the wording you used in your post would be sufficent. Nothing helps identify where a bug is more than a repeatable instance of the issue.
Turning off the location services and uninstalling HD widgets sorta worked for me... I still get random reboots though but mostly when I'm using Chrome. Google should have just left the stock android browser and made Chrome optional.

Nope, the problem was submitted to Google months ago and is listed to only receive medium priority. A total system failure that affects every single Nexus device is only given medium priority. Makes me ponder what in glory be would be considered high priority. Maybe if the tablet reached out and kicked you in the balls whenever you looked away from it
Anyone else?
Every game I have tried playing, causes the player to reboot spontaneously. No single thing seems to trigger it, just reboots at some random point while playing games. Using the Asus controller.
Everything else seems to be smooth.
Games tried:
Badlands
Riptide 2
Minion Rush
Sky Force 2014
BombSquad
Hungry Shark Evolution
Beach Buggy Racing
indeed
Hi.
Yes I have the same problem. Clearing the data worked for beachbuggy and bombsquad the first time i ran into this issue. Yesterday, bombsquad crashed no matter how many times I cleared data or uninstall/reinstall.
I'm trying to find out where to report this to google.
Crazy thing, but is the power plug /really/ jammed in deep and something put on the cable to make sure it doesn't wiggle loose?

I tried using online chat from the nexus troubleshooting page, but it never loads.
I have also used adb/fastboot to re-install the factory image, it didnt help.
May try using the call option on troubleshooting page when I have more time.

Well, in a word, no, its not the power cord.
I could understand if it happened at just any random time, but it happens only when playing a game.
I can stream movies for hours at a time using plex, stream music, etc. never reboots. Play a game, and it can happen within a second, or 5 minutes, but only when playing a game.

Thank you both for reporting, I finally have time and am requesting a call from them now as well.
Glad to hear it is working, its is extremely frustrating trying to use it now.
Well 45 minutes later on phone, I got RMA, just waiting on new one to arrive now. Says it leaves on the 25th, hope it is sooner.

Just to follow up, replacement arrived today.
So far not a single game crash. Also not had the audio drop-outs yet either.
Plex still will freeze on some movies however. I suspect this is more plex's problem as opposed to the player itself.

Hi, is your crash before RMA or after RMA?
I am facing crashes and reboot issues on Nexus Player, while playing Asphalt 8 and Air Race.
Still contemplating if I should RMA or wait for OTA software updates which may or may not resolve the issues.
For those who have RMA, did the help desk say it's a hardware or software problem?
Seems to be memory overflow issue, the 1GB ram is overloded, causing some memory leakage, and as a result the unit rebooted?

I haven't RMA'd... some other gentlemen above have, however. I'll be waiting for the next update and see if that fixes things as games are not my priority with the box, streaming from my nas and the net is. For those purposes, my NP is solid.
Thanks for the reply. I read from other forums that Lollipop has a reboot apps bug due to memory management. keeping my fingers crossed that the next software update will solve the games rebooting issue too.

I will second that. My RMA'd unit has yet to reboot while playing games, or at all for that matter.
I was also getting spontaneous reboot and audio dropout. Problem was solved by getting a replacement unit. Could hardly start a game of Asphalt 8 or play it more than a few seconds without it rebooting.
There is definitely a pattern here - that some units are marginal.
I've been having the same problem with the following games:
Asphalt 8
Beach Buggy Racing
Sky Force 2014 TV
God of Light TV
Games that I haven't had a problem with:
Badland
Bike Rivals
Called Google today and talked to a rep who hadn't heard of this issue before, but said it sounded like an issue with the apps and suggested I contact the developers. After reading about the RMA success stories, I'll be calling back tomorrow and pushing for RMA.
I'm fairly new the Nexus Player. In fact I just got mine today. So far I'm really liking it. However I recently updated to Android Lollipop 5.1.1 and have noticed scrolling issues. Seems like every time I scroll through the Google Play store or Google Movies and TV app about every five or so tiles it'll skip back three. It's very irritating. Not sure if it's a bug or not. Anybody else notice this and if so how did you go about fixing it ?
Edit: NVM after further reading of posts on this topic this seem to indeed be a weird glitch/bug reportedly for anyone using android lollipop 5.0 and above that hasn't been fixed by Google as of yet

Apps like Star Chart, Google Street view, youtube 360, Sky map are vary shaky. Not smooth at all. Calibrating, reboot, factory reset do not help. I tried contacting google but they want to send me a new one. I could be wrong but I think its software related. I just want to know if anyone else seen this. Or has any ideas.
I'm having similar problems. There's several posts here , Google product forums and Reddit with quite a few people reporting virtually the same problems.
Just tried star chart and noticed the same thing. However, Google street view was pretty smooth for me. Strange. Hopefully a software issue.
So I've tried a stargazing app called skeye and its Augmented Reality movement is super smooth. It may be using different sensors or the app is programmed better then the others. So I'm thinking it's more software related.
It seems that many have this problem it is just that they haven't seen it yet. What puzzles me Is that if I start a photo sphere in Street view and put it flat on the table there will be a lot of jittering, expected is that the picture should be completely still. If I take the same but instead of pushing the symbol starting the sphere I push the cardboard symbol and put it down flat then there is no jitter. Really strange. I am really not in the mood for an RMA. What do you guys think? Solvable with SW update or not?

Hey.. First of all two things, i am a fan of stock os.. Used a Nexus 5 previously.. Bought this for the experience of google software extremely disappointed..
Two, i have no grudge against Xiaomi.. In fact i think its the most vfm phone offering there is.. And i hav bought around 5 Mi phones for my family..
The os experience is too buggy.. Freezes, Gboard bug, dialer lag, shrieking sound while playing videos in chrome.. And the most major gripe i have with the device.. The phone & contacts app not being able to link various accounts.. All isee in fb pages and flipkart are mi fans hailing the camera.. Whatever review is posted its being moderated.. I feel even the online reviews for the device are sponsored reviews.. Cos not even a single review has mentioned the contact linking issue which is a major irritation & is one of the first things we notice..
When i put this in Mi India FB page along with the fact that the os is built by Mi not Google, they deleted my comment & upon bringing this to the attention of page admins they deleted my comment.. same words in flipkart were termed as abusive..
I hope the Mi A1 xda members can bring this out to the attention of Mi & Google.. Via twitter, fb, feed back app everything.. Slow updates can be tolerated but atleast give uz bug free updates & make Google Dialer & Google contacts the default over aosp dialer & contact apps..
Hope Mi A1 can turn out to be a poor mans pixel.. But we need to do our part.. Please post in FB & twitter and bring out the bugs to the notice of developers..
Good hardware will always be let down by poor software which is the case in Mi A1..

I hate the "What more can you expect from such a cheap phone" and "There is no other phone that provides these features at this price point" excuse.
How about wanting the features it does have to work properly?
Is that too much to expect from a phone?

Exactly, all that the user really wants is a smooth UI, not everyone likes to stick around forums to keep a check on bugfixes, that too from an Android one device. Enough rant, or the fanboys will be triggered.

Hey, oreo should fix all the specified issues, they are using Google Dialer/Phone in new build + duplicate contacts issue is fixed.
Are you sure that Contacts app is not Google's? I am no fan of Xiaomi, and I also feel let down by this mobile, but I think Google makes that app, and so it's their fault, not Xiaomi's.
Glad the Google Dialer and Contacts in the Android 8 beta replaced the AOSP versions. This was my biggest complaint when I bought the phone, also that the camera2api isn't enabled which could turn the camera into a better one...
I think the Oreo update will bring much improvements over Nougat, but I think it'll not be perfect. Hopefully they release the kernel sources on the release of Oreo so we can finally build custom ROMs. Keeping my fingers crossed...

While I haven't encountered your issues, I do sympathize with you! It must really suck to buy something, and then be shut down for talking about the problems that you have faced!
And yes, Xiaomi fanboys need to chill the **** out, and see the horrible mess of a software that Xiaomi has made. The hardware is decent enough for the price (even though I believe Redmi Note 4 is a better, cheaper phone and they have cut slight corners in battery department) but the software is what reeled a lot of people in - including you and me, and many other people who bought this phone.
The phone could've been a lot better, but the devs of Xiaomi are neither releasing the kernel nor releasing Oreo within the promised time. I'd be surprized if they managed to release the first batch of Oreo updates by this month ( just 2 days till 2017 ends).

No idea what I'm doing wrong, but during past 3 months I had:
- zero freezes (not counting well known and already resolved ambient display bug)
- zero reboots
- zero lags
- no bugs with dialer, contacts, gboard
SW wise it's pretty much on the same level as my old Nexus 5X. The main difference for me is better performance of Mi A1, though at the expense of worse camera and hissing noise.

I too have NO issues except the headphone hissing, but that doesn't mean we should claim that the issues others are facing are "over-exggerations", that's the whole premise of my comment here. My A1 performed than I expected, got it since day one and only had one forced reboot. Next to the multitouch issues I had no complaint about the performance of the phone. Came from a Nexus 5X and I definitely love this phone, but on the software side there are many improvements possible. It's definitely not stock Android like the Nexus, which is a shame...
Though I have to add that I also faced the duplicate contacts issue, spent a whole hour merging my contacts. [emoji28]

Well, some issues are indeed "over-exaggerations" and can be solved in minutes even without root (e.g. AOSP vs Google contacts). Others will need root to fix, and some can't be solved by ourselves. This is where it makes sense to turn back to vendor. But they don't give a sh*t about XDA or FB, it makes no sense to complain this way. Use built in feedback app and/or MIUI bug subforum.

Oh they do, that's what PR is. Still all i am saying is its wrong to decide what issue is big and whats not for others. If you feel you can help, comment, if you feel you can't, then don't, thats the premise on which xda is built. This whole logic of bullying, arguing, mocking and calling names isn't civic and informative.

Exactly my point, there are several threads and posts describing how some of the bugs can be fixed, but many people don't want the fix/workaround, they want only to complain I will mention it again, what prevents you (or anyone else) to freeze AOSP contacts and install Google contacts from Play store? Nothing. But then they couldn't complain that Xiaomi included AOSP contacts and not Google version..
I'm sure that if we would find a solution for every bug OP mentioned, his response would be "but I want Xiaomi to fix it!". And in my eyes, this approach has nothing in common with the "good old XDA", but rather turns it into another MIUI forum.

I hate the hissing noise as well (had the same issue with Nexus 5X and certain headphones). As there is no custom kernel yet, I solved it by limiting myself to use only headphones which do not have this issue (+ HW dongle for those which have this issue).
So far I've faced no issues other than the hiss and the ambient notifications or perhaps the startle me when someone calls or pings me bugs. Only recently I started facing delayed notifications due to my own idiocy of clearing the google framework data for "faster update". I hope it comes out soon. Also can anyone confirm if substratum andromeda works on oreo build of our device or not. Currently it is on sale and I'm considering buying it. I have a ****load of themes that I used on my previous phone Zenfone 2 Laser which had my own oms enabled build of lineage os on it. I miss it a lot. In the camera department, my old phone beats my new phone many times. The focusing is much more faster and better thanks to the laser and overall, it was an amazing camera considering it costs just half of what I paid for Mi A1. Hope they enable or at least release sources for this good piece of hardware. I know no Mi person is listening to this, but to all Xiaomi fans, its a good device not a perfect one.
