Which Android version is best for Nexus player ? - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am making this poll becuz I feel like MM is better for the device. I currently have it on 7.0 , and it crashes quite often or requires reboot once a week . Device is used daily for Kodi, youtube and casting .

I was rooted on previous versions, tried the earlier roms but returned to leanback/factory as it was easier to use for the rest of the technophobes round here. Much to my surprise after flashing 7.1.1 my lexar 64 GB sd card is plug and play. ( was prompted to format and use on first plug in ) I needed root on MM for SD before. I use Kodi / Netflix a lot and have had zero issues. I also cast spotify regularly and have had a couple unexplained disconnects but overall good results. I have also recently discovered holding the enter button ( big circle center button ) when in kodi on a media file will bring up the context menu . (jarvis 16.1) .

On the latest firmware myself, Kodi crashes after 5 mins or so, really annoying. Came here hoping for a fix.

Does anyone found something New on 7.1.1?

Apps take forever to load

Since the Oreo update the performance of my Nvidia Shield has gone down the toilet. Initially the UI was very sluggish. That seems to have improved a bit although it's still nowhere near as fast and responsive as it was on Nougat. But now the slow loading time of apps is starting to drive me crazy. When I click to open an app like Amazon Prime Video it takes 5-10 seconds for the app to open and then another 5-10 seconds for the home screen to populate with content. Before the update everything was pretty much instant. Is there a way to improve Shield performance after this terrible update? I already did a factory reset and it didn't help.

Same observation for me
I contacted Nvidia support via live chat. They said they would get back to me via email but since this doesn't seem to be an uncommon problem that probably means there's no fix.
Maybe a little of topic. /rant
I wouldn't say mine has been sluggish, but I've been having plenty of problems.
Anytime I tell one of my GH devices to do something on the shield they blink and then give no response. Even in My Activity logs for Home there is nothing in response to my commands.
Starting to really irritate me, I'm about done with Google Home and it's only been a week. Maybe HomeKit won't be so buggy (oh no! Apple :silly. Trying to convince my wife to buy into smart home stuff, and Google is managing to make it seem nothing short of a stupid gimmick. Doesn't do what it should more than half the time.
"Ok, Google, skip the track that's playing."
"Okay, but please try again and specify the device."
"Okay, Google. Skip the track that is currently playing on Spotify on the Shield."
...
...
...
Nothing, not even in activity logs.
Assistant OSD won't go away until I press back or tell google to "go away."
I had to reinstall Spotify today because it wouldn't load ("error" on Spotify start screen), even after reboots.
I just got this thing and have no experience with pre-oreo Shield, but it isn't difficult to understand why so many people are upset.
Might be driving to Best Buy buy the end of the week.
Here I thought my FireTV 2 was being a pita.
I did another factory reset. I did the 2 hour version before going to bed so the Shield would be powered on overnight in case it needed to do some background optimization. It took me hours to set up everything again and the end result was no improvement at all. My Shield Pro is still laggy and slow to respond to commands and might actually be worse now than it was before the factory reset. I've read the cheaper 16GB model is not experiencing this issue so at this point I really regret spending the extra money on the pro model. It's very frustrating to have a $300 streaming box that's barely a year old get completely trashed by an official software update.

The 16Gb version also lags after Oreo update
Performance improved after the second factory reset but it seemed to take a day to settle down. It's still not as smooth and responsive as before the update but it's also no longer maddening to use. I had a bunch of Plex crashes after the second factory reset but it seems like that might have stopped. I had a half dozen crashes over the first day and a half but so far none since then.
Oreo is faster than Nougat on phones so I don't understand why the opposite is true on Android TV. People are reporting problems on other Android boxes that got the Oreo update as well so this apparently isn't just a Nvidia issue.
Performance got so bad I ended up doing a third factory reset. After the third one everything is fast and responsive. Not sure why the first two factory resets didn't fix things. This time the only app I downloaded was Emby so maybe an app I downloaded previously was causing problems.
post 7.2 USB and app issues
i have the 2nd gen 16G version of the nvidia shield. i took the 7.2 experience upgrade and i am having lots of troubles:
my external USB hard drive just keeps scanning and never reachable
not able to start up many apps that did rely on that external storage
I have rebooted several times with no effect
i have also tried unplugging everything and then restarting them in order.
I have avoided so far a factory reset or forgetting the USB storage as those are a bit nuclear, but if there is no other option I must since most of my games and Kodi relied on teh USB and they are unusable (I did uninstall Kodi and attempt to reinstall) at bootup of Kodi, it still says "waiting for external drive.

H990ds and some issues since oreo

Afternoon, have had a couple of issues since the latest update hopefully some you chaps could assist with. First the 2nd screen is laggy but only when the main screen is off if the main screen is on all is fine? I have checked another H990ds and it appears to be exactly the same?
I have tried a factory reset just in case but that has not resolved the issue which brings me on to my second issue, since the reset I cannot control spotify on the 2nd screen (music controls) it just doesn't show up for some reason but others ,default music player, Amazon music and google music, does. I have set spotify to have full access in permissions just in case and set it as the default music player but that has not changed anything.
Anybody else having these issues?
Having fast charge issues mtself, not at all as fast as before.
It will say its fast charging but its crawling to recharge.
Not had fast charge issues myself but on the plus side spotify decided to work correctly, just the 2nd screen running all slow for no apparent reason.

OTA Oreo 8.1 Lenovo tab 4 8 plus

Hi
I have just received the update notification that the Oreo 8.1 update is available to download, but when I click to download and install I just get the message....
Download failed,please try again.
My internet connection is fine, and I am not rooted...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My model is TB-870F
Thanks.
Oh well.....I’m stuck with 7.1.1 then it seems lol
Lenovo have pulled the Ota for the time being as it bricked a fair few so they are fixing it etc.

I would not be surprised if they paused the OTA rollout. This update caused a lot of mess when I upgraded my 8704X:
1) the notification area went crazy (netguard),
2) I lost application read/write access to my external sdcard (I only had read access to it through the built-in file manager) therefore I had to back up its content, reformat it then restore my files. I figured out it was likely due to a permission issue it would have been barely infeasible to solve without rooting,
3) the system application named after Mobile Services started to install apps I did not want,
4) had to clear both cache & data or reinstall a lot of applications which dysfunctioned after the update.
On the bright side, the update brought:
1) a smoother experience. The overall UI interactions seem less sluggish although not fast enough when compared with a SD835. Digressing: could we get a high-end 8-inch Android tablet any time soon?
2) application startup is fixed. Some of my applications (e.g. hangar, ampere) previously did not start at boot,
3) better integration with password managers thanks to Oreo,
4) native night mode (red light),
5) touchpal 2016 keyboard removal (I could previously only disable it).
Finally, my last concerns are:
1) my tablet still cannot act as a phone. The 8704X model may not be able to place a call or some tricky network conf blocks it or I got a defective model. 4G/LTE data works,
2) Oreo is probably the last upgrade and there is no alternative rom development running,
3) (minor concern) I cannot benefit from Netflix HD streaming despite I never rooted/flashed my system.
To conclude, I really feel depressed considering the Android tablet market.
1) I was never really happy after switching from my Sony Z3 Tablet Compact to Lenovo Tab4 8 Plus. Sure, the later is more powerful and has more storage capacity. But the screen is vastly inferior (blueish, ghost touch) and the development scene does not exist as of yet.
2) there are very few 8-inch tablets worth. The Huawei Mediapad M5 may tick few boxes (slightly faster cpu) but the WiFi/BT issues, limited storage options (32Gb max), average battery runtimes are not convincing.
3) the 10-inch offer may be more tempting if you are willing to accept this format, pay the price, and opt for Samsung proprietary interface (e.g Galaxy Tab S3/S4). You cannot obtain more than 4Gb RAM/64Gb storage though.
4) the Pixel Slate is barely a prototype, most users reporting Android compatibility issues. Intel-centric, indecent price, no 4G/LTE connectivity yet, no external sdcard means you must purchase the Core I7/16Gb RAM/256Gb model.
Apple/IOS jail not being an option, I will keep my tab4 for a few months.
I don't like or have a tablet. I prefer phones for everything. My moto z2 force is my favourite at the moment.
Got the tab 4 for the wife to watch zion on it. Sold a 2018 ipad 9.7 for it as she found it too big and heavy.
Oreo update (S001018) worked for me on TB-8704X, but dm-verity is making me nuts, since I cannot go make a backup of my data partition after boot because of forced encryption, which means I have to lose all my settings and apps whenever I want to restore to a previous state - factory reset - which for me is unacceptable. You cannot install Magisk before this happens, and what is rooting without the ability to back up even good for? So I am patiently waiting for someone to port LineageOS or another custom ROM that can liberate me from this mess. So sick and tired of the stock ROM and its limitations. Go to hell, mandatory boot sec-bullies!
Well.... I'm getting crazy with this crap. I can't access the SD card in the external apps (like Perfect Viewer). I tried to reformat it but problem is still not resolved.
If i knew the update should cause all these issues i wouldn't install it, too late now i guess.
Some issues i encountered:
*Es file explorer - disabled\being uninstalled after start up and my tablet is set for timed startup \ shutdown.
*Issues with built in alarm clock app, could snooze it with a shake and now it doesn't even shows the clock when you open the cover and turning it off is pretty frustrating if you want to turn it off quickly.
*BS player issues connecting to SMB home network pc and also, when skipping files it got stuck and needs to be restarted.
So if you read this before installing the update, I recommend to wait for a better fix.

Shield pro with Samsung SSD - Storage Problems after 7.2 upgrade

I own a shield pro 2017.
I changed the SSHD with a Samsung EVO 860 SSD (lowlevel cloned from SSHD) some weeks ago.
Did nothing else. No rooting or bootloader opening or whatsoever
The shield was fast as hell before updating to 7.2.
Now it has MASSIVE problems with access to the internal drive.
It takes nearly half an hour to install an app.
In system settings, the internal storage is shown, but going to see the details it takes a very long time , also.
On the other hand, apps will start and play music and video files from the internal storage.
I have a lot of mp3 and aac music files on the storage.
It looks like a Process i do not know is running on the internal storage and taking the performance.
I stopped plex and emby server (had both on it to test which one is better for me) but no changes.
What can I do to get the performance back ??
I have no clue atm.
And what would happen if I put the Original SSHD back into the device ? It has 7.1 on it.
Well - I do not know which step is best to resume the issue.
Waiting, complete reset or something else ?
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE A NVIDIA SHIELD 16GB RUNNING 7.2 ANDROID.
I BOUGHT A Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM) TO BE USED AS ADDITIONAL STORAGE TO RUN MY PLEX SERVER. I HAVE MY MEDIA FILES IN MY SYNOLOGY MOUNTED AS NETWORK STORAGE BUT WANTED THE PLEX TO HANDLE ALL TRANSCODING LOCALLY.
1)
I SET THE SSD AS A DEVICE STORAGE.
SHIELD FORMATS IT WITH NO PROBLEM AS ADOPTED INTERNAL STORAGE AND ENCRYPTS IT BUT AFTER A WHILE THE SHIELD BECOMES EXTREMELY SLOW IN RESPONSE. USING THE REMOTE TO BROWSE THROUGH THE MENU AND SELECTING APPS IS EXTREMELY SLOW.
2)
I RESTORED THE SSD TO FROM DEVICE STORAGE TO EXTERNAL STORAGE AND AFTER A WHILE THE SAME BEHAVIOR DESCRIBED ABOVE ON 1) HAPPENS.
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE SSD THOUGH. IF I FORMAT ON A PC IT WORKD JUST FINE, NO FLAWS. I INSTALLED THE MAGIC SOFTWARE FROM SAMSUNG IN THE PC AND TESTED THE BENCHMARKS AND IT IS JUST FINE.
I BELIEVE THERE MIGHT BE OTHER PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM AS WELL.
ANY CLUES ? ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED.
THANKS IN ADVANCE

Most recent update is to blame I am sure, mine won't even startup now, was acting funny. I never did the SSD swap but I think I may to get it back up. I think the update is to blame for many problems.
Anyone have any luck yet? It's the 2015 Pro BTW. Just flashes green every time I touch the power on for one second but does nothing. I can hear the HDD spinning inside and it's not making any weird clicks or noises like a dying hard drive would??? Lost!!!

[ROM][UNOFFICIAL][9.0][chagallwifi] LineageOS 16.0

Hello everyone,
As Android 10 and above seem to be a bit sluggish for this device, I decided to make an Android 9 LineageOS 16.0 build for my soon 9 year old SM-T800 tablet. It seems to be much smoother and stable then Android 10 and even while doing heavy web browsing, watching YouTube in 1080p or using Google Maps navigation in satellite mode, nothing crashed for me. The only issue I found is that the tablet gets a bit hot when actively using it. To sorta mitigate the issue, I recommend rooting the device, installing a kernel manager and limiting the CPU frequency to 1700MHz (where default is 1900MHz). The ROM itself has been very stable to use, only camera video recording and fingerprint scanner are not working as of now.
What works?
Boot
Wi-Fi
Bluetooth
Front and back cameras (photos only)
Video playback
Audio
Sensors
Flash
GPS
Microphone
What doesn't work?
Video recording in camera
Fingerprint scanner
Bluetooth is randomly hanging up when connecting peripherals
Offline charging
You tell me the rest
This build is SELinux Permissive!
Flashing instructions (clean flash):
Ensure you're on the latest Marshmallow firmware for your tablet
Use LATEST OFFICIAL TWRP, or LineageOS recovery (attached with the ROM)
Wipe Data and System partitions from recovery
Flash ROM zip from internal storage, SD Card, USB OTG or ADB sideload
Flash GApps (optional, my recommendation is OpenGApps 9.0 arm pico or nano)
Flash Magisk (optional)
Reboot and voila!
Otherwise, this ROM is good for users who wants better smoothness and stability and doesn't want to downgrade all the way down to Android 7.1.
If anyone wants a build for a model different than chagallwifi, tag me and I can try to build (You'll have to test it yourself!).

For cpu temperatures/speed limits,
Which cpu govenor in the kernel did you use?
You could build a version with the kernel limiting to 1700Mhz so people need to mess around with root.
I recommend upgrading the thermal pads inside the tablet as well

I currently can't find the cause of the sensor not working. It reaches the fingerprint setup successfully, but holding or sliding my finger on the home button doesn't seem to do anything.
Hi Just a quick question.. my understanding is that android 9 does not support dark mode, that your screenshot almost seem to suggest that it does.
my reason for asking is that I am visually impaired, and really can't read anything on a white background. anyway just wanted clarification before I try out this rom.
Cheers

Hi! Android 9 has a partial dark mode. The built in system apps as well as the system UI is dark, but third party apps do not support this dark theme and are light by the default. Many third party apps can be manually set to dark theme.

thanks, I think I'll give it a crack, i'm using the latest Lineage 20 build from another thread and to be honest it's super buggy lol. If this doesn't work out I can always go back to the 17.1 build which was actually pretty stable, but as you point out it's a bit on the sluggish side. Cheers
Or you might try unofficial LineageOS 18.1 (A11) which perfectly supports dark theme. I'm running it on my SM-T805 without any problems.

The problem I found with A10+ ROMs is that some slightly graphics heavier apps or even Google Maps in the browser can crash itself or even lock up the tablet completely.
For those graphics apps I can't tell. But Google Maps I use a lot and it's absolutely stable.

The app itself works fine, but the Google Maps website will likely crash when it's opened in a browser when starting to navigate around the map. And there are many other websites that do crash the browser as well.

Watching youtube works fine, as that's all i do with this tablet now, other than checking my email. Setting up the e-mail did freeze the tablet a couple of times
hello,
So I tried out this rom and wanted to report back my findings.
I found it to be both stable and fast, but there were a few issues, which has led me back to 17.1 LuisROM which given my particular needs really does seem to be the best option. I have actually tried both18 and 20, but neither of them are as stable as17.1, at least based on the particular set of apps I use.
Anyway, the issues I had were:
1) the partial dark mode support was certainly not bad, but given the fact that apps don't follow the system theme, and I could find no way of setting the Google app to dark mode, it was less than ideal. this is no fault of the build at all It's just a limitation of being Android 9, and I imagine for most people it would not be an issue nor a reason not to use this ROM
2) I had a weird issue when I shut the tablet down and plugged it in to power source. The battery icon showed and and then the tablet froze up, so that if I disconnected it from the power source the battery icon still continued to display and the only way to boot it back up was to press and hold the home key, volume down and power. this would seem to suggest there is an issue with the Kernal/ boot loader.
3) I have the official Samsung case with built-in keyboard, but there appeared to be a problem with bluetooth and I simply could not get it to connect. this was the deciding factor like to go back to 17.1

Hello, I'm sorry for the issues you experienced with the ROM. I checked both of the issues and the offline charging issue seems to be there for me too. As you mentioned, it might be related to kernel, but I sadly can't find the actual cause of it as I'm still pretty new new to the world of Android development and I'm still learning how everything works. The Bluetooth issue is something I have now experienced as well. I tried connecting a pair of BT earbuds and they seem to be stuck at connecting at the Bluetooth page in settings. For now I'll update the known issues with those two bugs and maybe one day I'll find out what causes them. And by the way, since you now installed Android 10 on your tablet, how is it for browsing sites? Do sites crash often? Since this is the main thing I use the tablet for (and occasionally watching YouTube and navigation in the car).
Cheers

Hey there,
I wouldn't exactly call myself a power user, but I have not suffered a single website crash on the particular build I am using, Which I believe was created by a very knowledge Developer last year. It might be worth noting that I use Samsung Internet browser, Which in my opinion offers by far the best overall experience, Including a flawless dark mode option that seems to work for every website.
One thing I will mention about the spilled is that the developer seems to have gone AWOL and the download link to his builds no longer works. That said, I have a copy of the build on my google drive, download link SM-T800 Lineage 17.1
Give it a spin and see what you think, Overall I'm very happy with its stability and performance. Because of my visual impairment I mostly use audio based apps, such as Google Podcast, Audible, Poweranp Pro, But I also occasionally use Newpipe and VLC player and again, have not had any issues.
PS Good on you for creating your own build, I almost considered trying to do it myself but it's just too much to take on considering I can hardly see the screen lol
