[Q] encryption...

has anyone done this yet? I noticed it in the settings, but it said it can take up to 1 hour... just wondered if it was worth while.
if you have done it, does it slow anything down, and how long did it take you to run?

I tried but it appears to not work. You have to be plugged in and fully charged (seems to work from 90% ish), and you have to have unlock PIN set. But once you have selected and confirmed encryption, the screen blanks except for a green line drawing of an Android logo, and then after a minute or so the screen blanks out and then you wait...and wait....and wait...and wait. I gave up after 4 hours.
If at any point you switch screen on, you get the PIN prompt: enter PIN, and you're presented with the blank screen with green line diagram of android logo. I've left it like this for several hours. In the end I reset, and got my device back - but still unencrypted. I've also tried without ever trying to log in until at least 4 hours have elapsed, in case the login attempt disturbed the encryption.
I have logged a defect with Asus for this and a couple of other things, and this morning got a response back saying that "We're still looking into this", which seems to suggest that they agree it is a problem.

Cool in gonna try now, at 95percent battery.

I'm wondering how the encryption is handled, is it software or hardware enabled. I have seen with PC's that use software encryption that there is a performance hit and if the encryption is handled by hardware, like a hardware enabled HDD encryption, there is little to no performance hit. The PC I tested the software encryption on took forever to boot vs the hardware enabled one.

You must have used some strange encryption application or had an old computer.
Try truecrypt - on modern (2 core) computer there is practically no performance hit whatsoever (decrypting and even encrypting on the fly is faster than hard drives - on SSD it could be too slow though). The same goes for standard encryption used by Ubuntu (it's very probable that Android tablets use the same method).
Truecrypt (and probably most other full-disk encryptions too) work like that:
- all the data on hard drive is encrypted (edit: it's encrypted all the time, never, ever is decrypted data written to disk),
- when system reads data - it's decrypted before being send to applications,
- when system writes data - it's encrypted before it's saved to the disk.
Also - Tegra2 should have a part handling encryption and decryption so it could be at least partially hardware encryption.

Your right, it has been a while since I have used encryption due to a bad experience early on. I'll give Truecyrpt a try. The software I used before was Safeguard Easy.

I left mine overnight, and it still was not encrypted. I had even done a factory reset beforehand to minimize the amount of data to encrypt.
I'm pretty sure this doesn't work. I'll post as soon as I get a reply from Asus.

It did not work, maybe this feature isn't ready yet?

As a feature, it's not ready for prime time. I have it working on the xoom, but every reset it erases my timezone and sets it to GMT. Also, it uses the same PIN as your lock screen, so if you have a numeric pin for easy access, anyone who sees it now knows your encryption password as well. It really should be two different passwords. I intend this weekend to reset my machine and remove the encryption, because it doesn't serve the purpose it was supposed to serve.

Bump. Any info from Asus? I started it at ~7pm. It's midnight, and on the last few power-ups I get nothing except the green android logo after I enter the PIN. So it seems it's still not doing anything? Gonna reset now I guess.

See nothing but a android robot after enter the PIN. 7 hrs later I manually shutdown the machine.

Same here on the Modaco ROM.
Left it on the android pic for 9 hours... it didn't lock the screen or anything, and at the end, the accelerometer still worked when I rotated the screen, but I had to power off and on to get it back.
What does the encryption do, anyway? Does it stop you being able to load files on from the PC? Does it ask for the password when you plug it into the PC?

So no one has been able to get encryption working? I was just going to test this out and saw this thread. Thanks.

I've seen someone talking about some minor issues when running with encryption, so someone got it working.
That MIGHT have been on xoom, but I think it was the transformer.

Just thought I would share my experience with the encryption feature in Honeycomb since some people can't get it working:
At first I couldn't get it working like some people on this thread, I too was stuck on the green wireframe Android for hours on end until I discovered I could still exit back to the homescreen by pressing the home key on the keyboard dock. This happened on both the stock Asus 3.1 ROM and v1.4 of the PRIME! ROM (installed via nvflash).
I then updated recently to v1.5 of PRIME! via CWM and I can report that I was able to encrypt my Transformer after this update. It displayed the green Android wireframe logo for a few seconds, then rebooted and went into the encryption progress page. I had not really done much with the ROM other than change a few small settings and add my Google account, so the encryption was complete in less than an hour. I think the 'hour or more' estimate Google gives within the encryption description text is probably more accurate if you've installed a few more apps afterwards, but of course your timing will vary.
Furthermore I think that the encryption is likely only partial, because I was then able to flash one of the zip files from this thread via CWM without any issues or prompts. Otherwise I'm sure it would've thrown some kind of error such as not being able to mount the system partition or something of that ilk.
Finally (lol ) I also found this page on the Android source website outlining the details of the encyption implementation in Android Honeycomb for anyone interested. There is a mention somewhere of the 128-bit flavour of the AES algorithm being used to encrypt the master key.
Hope this helps anyone trying to get encryption working on their Transformer .

yet another absolutely useless feature, besides bricking the thing for whoever tries to steal it. keeps your data safe.. even from yourself.
i noticed a problem when inserting a microsd (into the pad itself) that it would not be able to boot as long as this is inserted. i am guessing this is because it tries to decrypt the microsd (that is not encrypted) and therefore is stuck in boot.
This is another aspect one should expect if this was a pre-release software. I am extremely disappointed with this product so far, mostly because of the software. most of (not any of the cameras) the hardware (including the keyboard) is pretty good

I did it 2 days ago, and it worked flawless. It tooks about an hour. I use it since and I have no problems at all.
The only thing is that I have to insert the SD card again each time I power on the transformer. Any idea how to change rhat?

You likely have ASUS to blame for this, as my understanding is that the Thinkpad tablet deals properly (from the spec anyway) with SD cards attached to the device even to the point it can additionally encrypt them. Again we are all early adopters, Honeycomb was sort of an experiment for Google, and Ice Cream Sandwich is the real next version of the andoid platform.
And encryption is hardly a useless feature, it means Google is finally trying to consider enterprise usage of their products which is very important to the further growth of the platform.

Yotaphone lagging terribly

Hi,
I have an EU Yotaphone YD201 running lollipop and noticed that it has been lagging terribly for a few months now. Is this normal for the yotaphone considering that it came out 3 years ago? Often opening apps such as facebook and whatsapp takes around 10 seconds and often pops up with the message "this app is not responding, would you like to close it?". The camera is also extremely slow in opening and often crashes straight after taking a photo (not saving it either). The keyboard always suffers from lagging when typing and often has to catch up after i've finished typing. Is the yotaphone 2 simply outdated in terms of hardware and software meaning I should consider buying a new phone? Or am I the only one having these issues?
I have about 6GB free memory and RAM usage averages around 50%.

Lollipop has been notorious with responsiveness and overall system stability. I had Galaxy S6 that crawled on Lollipop. I would recommend, either to step down to Kitkat (not recommended unless system fluidity is of primacy), or step up to Marshmallow. The EPD optimization is better implemented in Marshmallow and its definitely more responsive. When I bought this phone, Lollipop was already on the boards, I ran Lollipop for few hours before reverting to Kitkat, after a few months, Marshmallow came to the scene.
To the latter half of your concern, the device runs on 801 chipset, it should not stutter unless on contemporary graphic intensive gaming. It should deal with most causal apps with relative ease. However, its age becomes prominent considering its power efficiency, it's prone to heating, though not as bad as 808. Of there were a way to undervolt the CPU, battery concerns could be dealt with in more pragmatic sense.
To conclude, I suggest a switch to Marshmallow.

Thanks! I would flash the RU lollipop to then upgrade to Marshmallow, however my usb port is broken and it appears to be impossible to upgrade otherwise. So I will have to wait for the OTA version, hoping that eventually it comes out for the EU yotaphones

It should be updated to Marshmallow eventually. Might take time though.

You don't have to flash RU Lollipop firmware in order to upgrade to MM. However the lack of usb-port is a problem. Have you tried downloading the fullFOTA from MM thread, put it into the internal storage and apply it somehow from the recovery? Another option could be using ADB via Wi-Fi. Enable it in the developers options and search for the appropriate app, I think you can apply the MM update using Wi-Fi instead of USB-cable.
Moreover, if you have TWRP I could link here the clean MM installation backup, thus you could "restore the backup" and have MM.

The OP needs to be cautious, lack of USB port means if the recovery fails, the phone would be locked into an inoperable state.

That is a big risk with no USB working .

Don't know if this is about your problem but will post it and you will say. Yesterday I flashed Marshmallow [RU] on my Yotaphone 2 and everything went perfect, except when I want to copy a file, even if its inside the internal storage. Sometimes this extremly lag copying or moving files turned into an error of the filesystem.
Even if this has nothing to do with this post, can someone say something about that?

Removing the downloaded but not installed Nougat update

Hi, first post. I asked the question on another site some months back about deleting or stopping the install notification about the downloaded, although not installed Nougat update, no answers were forthcoming. My phone on 6.0.1 works great and I have no issues that warrant an upgrade. I have hardly any apps installed on it and really only use it for light internet, photos, the phone and GPS. I don’t really want to update it to Nougat due to some of the horror stories I have read. I am not (yet) very Android proficient.
Can I just leave the downloaded Nougat updated installed, but stop the daily notification to install it?
Or
Can I easily delete the downloaded but not installed Nougat update?
In this case I subscribe to the notion, if it isn’t broke don’t touch it. Maybe I am being too overly cautious.

If you remove downloaded files, still it will not stop, then you will get notification for new update available and to download it.
Better if you update to latest version,
otherwise you need to restrict notification for moto updater app or data for it. (I don't remember correctly if those feature existed on MM, as the way it is present in N)

It looks as if I will have to just go ahead and install the OTA Nougat 7.0 update that has downloaded; as there doesn't seem to be a simple way of stopping the notification to install it. As mentioned, I didn't want to install Nougat as it works perfectly now on 6.01, maybe I am just worrying about nothing, obviously Nougat 7.0 doesn't stuff up all devices.
It is still in warranty so if an OTA update causes problems I may be able to return it?

If there is any problems and if it's under warranty, you can surely take it to the service center.
As far as I know, if you get a replacement device, it will be updated to the latest version out of the box. So there is no way going back to MM.
If you still want to use MM, your only hope is custom ROMs.
You can't downgrade the official updates.
Nougat is not that bad. Most of us are waiting for Oreo and I am wondering how are you still on MM

I have disabled most of the Motorola notifications "Motorola Update Services", "Motorola Notification" and one or two others. This sometimes prevents the "Install System Update" notification as long as I do not power it off, I put it to sleep by putting if face down. Although most of the time I have to delay the install manually by rescheduling the install time-pressing later etc when the message pops up.
I am a light user, and can get up to 8 days (rarely) usage out of a single charge, I have disabled a lot of Google & other Apps that I don't want to use, and turned off many Google Play Services. Lots of photos, calls and WiFi use I get 2-3 days use, so I am trying to keep the current OS. Also the works reasonably well in very hot weather taking photos and using the GPS-off line maps, it does at times get hot and can suffer camera issues and more so, GPS stuttering and lag above 35C-40+C but shade it from the sun and minimise use and it will work ok.

Ok, I've been operating with Nougat 7.0 for two months now. There are pros and cons and some of the cons I will adapt to as they are only preferences, minor setting and appearance.
My main concerns about the OS update were battery life and heating. Normal use, the battery drains a little quicker without WIFI or Sim data on, not enough to cause concern. But with WIFI and or sim data on, it definitely uses more battery power than before, almost at an average of 10%-15% more-not a scientific analysis. I am not a big data users so again not big concern. Although when using data, downloading, surfing etc, the battery rate depletes at a much quicker rate than before, I would estimate 30%-40% faster. I also notice the battery depletes much quicker when using the camera and the associated heat when using the camera feels (going by sense not measuring it) somewhat higher. The camera and video mode are the one that bother me and I forgot to mention, using offline maps, gps enabled (no WIFI or Sim data activated) the battery use is again higher than before.
So, I would have been better off on MM, yes, but it is what it is and I can work around the battery issue when I know my usage of those features will be heavy. A cheap pocket portable USB charger may need to be purchased.
I haven’t done a factory reset and I have only cleared the cache via settings app. Maybe the next step before a portable pocket USB charger is purchased.

Phone working very slow

I own Huawei Nova (CAN0L11C) with EMUI 5 and Android 7. I use it for more than a year now and so far everything looked great.
However, recently I'm very pissed of the productivity of the phone. I am using it mainly not in my country of origin as I work in a different country, but since I'm here I noticed that the phone acts veeery very slow. It becomes a huge issue to open google maps and start navigating with it, and during that time i don't want to speak about multitasking. It's almost impossible to swithc to other apps.
Here are some things that I tried:
I've cleared up disk space.
From time to time i use some apps like NoxCleaner to clean the memory and caches but this fixes the problem temporarily
I did uninstalled apps that i dont use
Nothing helps much. I would appreciate any suggestions to make that phone great again!

you have to factory reset your phone ( 1st you have to save your personal files on Sdcard )
Settings -------> Advanced setting ------> Backup & Reset -------> Factory Data Reset ------> Reset Phone

yeah im kinda trying to avoid that, but thanks for the suggestion. this will be my last option if nothing else works.

How's your RAM usage? Don't use anti viruses and task killers. They're useless on Android.

I have been experiencing the same slow speeds & lag. The 1st 6 months I was so impressed with the performance of this phone, even comparing it to the performance of the flagships. It was really that good. But, come 8 months down the line, & I'm battling with lag, poor multitasking & screen freezing. Im trying to avoid factory resetting & on top of all this I don't have access to my trusted tools as I can't unlock the bootloader to gain root.
Can somebody look into this please & provide some feedback. I doubt its the processor or hardware causing these issues as the Snapdragon 625 is one of the best in its class & other phones using it aren't experiencing the same problems. I have a feeling its got something to do with the Android system updates of recent. The Google security patches updates. I noticed the speed issues after each update was installed.

FINALLY got to the bottom of my Huawei NOVA's performance issues!!!
Firstly, just want to say, Google & Huawei you are both a bunch of Monkeys !!!
I've owned my fone for two years now, and the latter year the device was just a piece of Sh1t to use, anything like Google Maps, or Assist or 'OK Google' was ridiculous to try and use, ..and everything else was running at like a 3rd performance of what the phone was supposed to be acting like. (hanging & freezing whenever you needed it to do something)
**What really cheesed me off is the amount of times this phone went back to Huawei under Warranty and they didn't even both running a performance test with all their technical know how to identify which process/application was the culprit - & o yes, it was a specific process (Or update rather as the last guy on this Thread assumed it was).
No Android apps either from the play store - like Process identifier apps etc would show any bottleneck in either RAM or CPU when the go slow or hanging was occurring, ..its like it couldn't detect the "layer" of which the issue was occurring on.
So Huawei just kept Factory resetting my phone and sending it back,.then as soon as I load my apps and within a week its all balls again. (And Im wondering if its one of my apps doing it)
To the point: IT IS THE **** GOOGLE APP **** itself, ..or at least the updates that are applied after your fone has completed its factory reset (If you did this) and the next updates come down automatically via Google Play store. (This isn't Google Assist or the Android OS itself,..the listing in the installed apps is just called 'Google' or 'Google LLC' (Im a new user so cant post any images or links yet untill after 10 basic posts first).
Grrr! ..this has been soo frustrating to find this out, ..so I just uninstalled updates for this 'Google App' so its back to the default original the phone came with, & now my phone is absolutely flying again - whilst I still have it loaded with all my apps etc.
So who's to blame here, ..Google for pushing updates which kill the phone OR Huawei should've identified this and responded with either a fix OR that the middle weight Nova can't handle the latest 'Google App' updates.
For the record - I also managed to get my Nova updated to Android Nougat (Which wasn't officially released on Nova UK phones, .. I got the correct firmware/software update etc,... but also since it went from Marshmallow to Nougat it also was crippling slow and therefore I got it reverted back to Android 6 Marshmallow (Now Im wondering if again it was simply that the latest Google App Updates had been applied to Nougat and messed the phone ?? - anyway ..ill keep it on Android 6 for now,..just happy that its responsive again and flying.
I also have to manually press the Microphone on the screen now whenever I want to speak to 'OK Google' ..its not automatic anymore - or rather constantly listening out for me to say 'OK Google' (So this must be applicable to the latest Google App update - but then this Nova just cant handle being on listen the whole time. ... But anyway if that's the price to pay for excellent performance now, ..then I dont mind at all. stuff automatic listening for me to say 'OK Google' Ill control it manually instead.
Its been so long that I forgot how a phone should be, ..its insane how fast my phone is now since uninstalling the frikken Google App)
Dont let this Google App update from your phones original - Disable Android Auto Updates

THANK YOU! <3 I have uninstalled the Google App leaving untouched rest of the google services like "google apps services" or "maps" etc. Now my phone is working as it should be!

Hi guys. Any update on your overall speed?
I factory reset the phone and it helped a bit for a while. Then I disabled the Google App and it worked like a charm... for a while. Now it's incredibly laggy again.
It's really frustrating to use. I would love to install a custom ROM, alas I don't have the bootloader unlock codes

I went back to Oreo on my Pixel 2 and here is why...

1) Volume controls, seriously google? what are you smoking? Why is it way more difficult to change my ringer volume then it needs to be? why do I need to change media volume if I'm not actually listening to media?
2) Much more professional UI, if I wanted an iPhone I would buy and iPhone, Google might as well called this update "Apple Pie"
3)Much better notification/quick toggles pull down with sub-menus for bluetooth and wifi. Why did Google remove this?
4) Split screen mode is usable again! (Videos play in split screen too!)
5) No need to worry about an OTA rolling and screwing things up, I like the piece of mind that my phone will stay on the final Oreo update until I feel Pie is stable enough (9.1?)
6) Multitasking is faster (although this can be solved with an adb command, the whole concept is still a downgrade.
7) Pie is not used by many people at all, in fact the number of total android devices running Pie is less then 0.1% of android devices Source: https://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/ - We are essentially beta testers even after the developer previews.... Oreo however is up to nearly 20% distribution.
8) Battery life using Franco's Naptime app for aggressive doze gives me insane battery life, Adaptive battery is pretty useless when you use such a powerful app like this one.
9) Adaptive brightness is awful on Pie
10) My clock is where it has been for the past 7 years on Android phones, this notch thing just needs to die. Google needs to add a boolean value in systemUI for the left clock and assign it a true value for phones with a notch, and false with a phone with no notch. Seriously, do this!!!
Now before you guys come in here bringing up security bulletin updates, it's a fair point but I would just like to say that no security update will save you from being a noob, don't download shady apps, don't connect to unsecured public wifi networks, don't browse shady websites and don't click on everything you see. Much like a PC, you can get the latest Windows updates and anti-virus definitions but if your foolish and browse around unsafe and shady websites and installing shady .exe's your going to get yourself in to trouble and no security update will save you. The best security for Android is your brain.

you sure can, unlock your bootloader and install the latest 8.1 Factory Image from July, then relock your bootloader boot up and disable automatic system updates in developer options and hide the OTA notification by long pressing it.

Oh ok interesting. Maybe I was thinking you cannot downgrade from O back to N. I thought google made changes where you cannot downgrade due to security patches or something.

Oreo just has an overall more consistent experience and mature interface.

I never left Oreo for many of the reasons you listed, after researching Pie a bit.
We're stuck in this kinda bad phase of phones right now: manufacturers are removing hardware features to encourage/require additional accessory purchases and forcing obsolescence (or ~$80 for battery replacements), plus new software seems in a lot of ways to be regressing. I mean, if you have a Kit Kat device laying around, boot it up and I swear you'll wonder what the heck has "improved" since that. Imagine a Kit Kat style firmware running on today's fast RAM and processors, with hardware features - removable battery, sd card slot, headphone jack. Excuse me while I wipe up my drool.
I'm sure there are people that want AI and all that jazz, but I also bet there are plenty of us who want a stable, long-lasting dependable phone, and there just aren't many options for that anymore.

HAHAHA that is too good, I had the S3 but not S4 so had no idea about your project. Now I kinda want to go find an S4... :highfive:

Ticker notifications are the best, and can get improved, there is an app in PS if you want them back.

Couldn't agree more with you guys. Pie is just terrible. I'm so happy to be back to oreo. Unlocked bootloader, back to oreo, relocked bootloader and turned off updates. No need to root, I couldn't get better than this and if I did root I'd lose Google pay which is awesome. No need for xda for a long time. Bye bye!

I admit that the battery was worse on the initial roll out of Pie. But I've stuck with it and this is my battery right now in the November update. I don't have or play any games on my phone though. I'm happy with it.

Yes.
This is not a Samsung device where a minor mistake when modifying your device could screw up your IMEI number..

you can have the best of both worlds. root + unlocked bootloader + still use (most) apps like google pay that otherwise detect such things. all you need is magisk and to flash a custom kernel that disabled the bootloader check (i use flash kernel)

Thanks for your ROM it was probably my most favorite S4 one.

Also went back to 8.1. Only thing I really miss is the smart rotation option in the dock. What makes it worse is there is a bug in 8.1 where if you enable rotation via quick settings, rotate the device to landscape, rotate back to portrait, then attempt to turn off rotation via quick settings again, the first touch input does not actually toggle the setting, need to press again.
My other observations: Fingerprint sensor seems a little slower, charging sound toggle does nothing (known issue).

9) Adaptive brightness is awful on Pie
10) My clock is where it has been for the past 7 years on Android phones, this notch thing just needs to die. Google needs to add a boolean value in systemUI for the left clock and assign it a true value for phones with a notch, and false with a phone with no notch. Seriously, do this!!!
Now before you guys come in here bringing up security bulletin updates, it's a fair point but I would just like to say that no security update will save you from being a noob, don't download shady apps, don't connect to unsecured public wifi networks, don't browse shady websites and don't click on everything you see. Much like a PC, you can get the latest Windows updates and anti-virus definitions but if your foolish and browse around unsafe and shady websites and installing shady .exe's your going to get yourself in to trouble and no security update will save you. The best security for Android is your brain.

1) For me it's much preferred, I can always easily control media volume, which I do 9 out of 10 times, personally. I know that You might want to change the ringer to adapt to situation, but it's obnoxious to do it every time, why not leave it on an average setting or turn on vibrate mode for silent, for once a Android phone has a decent haptic feedback.
2) Go buy a Samsung, if You want "unprofessional". In real world it's called simple and intuitive, and Google IMO seems to be doing this even better than Apple ever did.

6) Faster, yeah, but more fiddly, I found the new system more calming and it requires less tapping, and transition between apps and scrolling seemed smoother. But it's not perfect by no means.

agreed 100%. My battery life is so much better now that i'm back on oreo than i was on pie. on pie i had to charge 3 times a day when prior to the 9.0 update, i'd easily make it 24 hours no problem. i lost over an hour of screen on time. was pathetic. i'm done with pixels after this phone honestly; google is such garbage now. also incredibly ridiculous i need to run a modded APK to get night sight on oreo because they won't rollout the new apk to oreo when it's clearly all software that was available on oreo. i'm staying on 8.1 until i get a new phone, and with all the BS bugs of 9.0, i'm def not looking forward to 9.0 touchwiz on my work note 8.
