Phone working very slow - Huawei Nova/Nova Plus Questions & Answers

Hello,
I own Huawei Nova (CAN0L11C) with EMUI 5 and Android 7. I use it for more than a year now and so far everything looked great.
However, recently I'm very pissed of the productivity of the phone. I am using it mainly not in my country of origin as I work in a different country, but since I'm here I noticed that the phone acts veeery very slow. It becomes a huge issue to open google maps and start navigating with it, and during that time i don't want to speak about multitasking. It's almost impossible to swithc to other apps.
Here are some things that I tried:
I've cleared up disk space.
From time to time i use some apps like NoxCleaner to clean the memory and caches but this fixes the problem temporarily
I did uninstalled apps that i dont use
Nothing helps much. I would appreciate any suggestions to make that phone great again!

you have to factory reset your phone ( 1st you have to save your personal files on Sdcard )
Settings -------> Advanced setting ------> Backup & Reset -------> Factory Data Reset ------> Reset Phone

yeah im kinda trying to avoid that, but thanks for the suggestion. this will be my last option if nothing else works.

Same problem there. Factory reset already done but nothing changes... Some news on the subject ?

How's your RAM usage? Don't use anti viruses and task killers. They're useless on Android.
You can try LineageOS 14.

Thanks for sure.
I have at least 1Go Ram free. Lags appears on maps, snapchat and screen freeze...

Same problem exists
Same problem happening, any solution for this issue?

I have been experiencing the same slow speeds & lag. The 1st 6 months I was so impressed with the performance of this phone, even comparing it to the performance of the flagships. It was really that good. But, come 8 months down the line, & I'm battling with lag, poor multitasking & screen freezing. Im trying to avoid factory resetting & on top of all this I don't have access to my trusted tools as I can't unlock the bootloader to gain root.
Can somebody look into this please & provide some feedback. I doubt its the processor or hardware causing these issues as the Snapdragon 625 is one of the best in its class & other phones using it aren't experiencing the same problems. I have a feeling its got something to do with the Android system updates of recent. The Google security patches updates. I noticed the speed issues after each update was installed.

FINALLY got to the bottom of my Huawei NOVA's performance issues!!!
Firstly, just want to say, Google & Huawei you are both a bunch of Monkeys !!!
I've owned my fone for two years now, and the latter year the device was just a piece of Sh1t to use, anything like Google Maps, or Assist or 'OK Google' was ridiculous to try and use, ..and everything else was running at like a 3rd performance of what the phone was supposed to be acting like. (hanging & freezing whenever you needed it to do something)
**What really cheesed me off is the amount of times this phone went back to Huawei under Warranty and they didn't even both running a performance test with all their technical know how to identify which process/application was the culprit - & o yes, it was a specific process (Or update rather as the last guy on this Thread assumed it was).
No Android apps either from the play store - like Process identifier apps etc would show any bottleneck in either RAM or CPU when the go slow or hanging was occurring, ..its like it couldn't detect the "layer" of which the issue was occurring on.
So Huawei just kept Factory resetting my phone and sending it back,.then as soon as I load my apps and within a week its all balls again. (And Im wondering if its one of my apps doing it)
To the point: IT IS THE **** GOOGLE APP **** itself, ..or at least the updates that are applied after your fone has completed its factory reset (If you did this) and the next updates come down automatically via Google Play store. (This isn't Google Assist or the Android OS itself,..the listing in the installed apps is just called 'Google' or 'Google LLC' (Im a new user so cant post any images or links yet untill after 10 basic posts first).
Grrr! ..this has been soo frustrating to find this out, ..so I just uninstalled updates for this 'Google App' so its back to the default original the phone came with, & now my phone is absolutely flying again - whilst I still have it loaded with all my apps etc.
So who's to blame here, ..Google for pushing updates which kill the phone OR Huawei should've identified this and responded with either a fix OR that the middle weight Nova can't handle the latest 'Google App' updates.
For the record - I also managed to get my Nova updated to Android Nougat (Which wasn't officially released on Nova UK phones, .. I got the correct firmware/software update etc,... but also since it went from Marshmallow to Nougat it also was crippling slow and therefore I got it reverted back to Android 6 Marshmallow (Now Im wondering if again it was simply that the latest Google App Updates had been applied to Nougat and messed the phone ?? - anyway ..ill keep it on Android 6 for now,..just happy that its responsive again and flying.
I also have to manually press the Microphone on the screen now whenever I want to speak to 'OK Google' ..its not automatic anymore - or rather constantly listening out for me to say 'OK Google' (So this must be applicable to the latest Google App update - but then this Nova just cant handle being on listen the whole time. ... But anyway if that's the price to pay for excellent performance now, ..then I dont mind at all. stuff automatic listening for me to say 'OK Google' Ill control it manually instead.
Its been so long that I forgot how a phone should be, ..its insane how fast my phone is now since uninstalling the frikken Google App)
Dont let this Google App update from your phones original - Disable Android Auto Updates
Hope this Helps you guys. (Actually it will blimming well help)
Peace

THANK YOU! <3 I have uninstalled the Google App leaving untouched rest of the google services like "google apps services" or "maps" etc. Now my phone is working as it should be!

Hi guys. Any update on your overall speed?
I factory reset the phone and it helped a bit for a while. Then I disabled the Google App and it worked like a charm... for a while. Now it's incredibly laggy again.
It's really frustrating to use. I would love to install a custom ROM, alas I don't have the bootloader unlock codes

My gripes with Mate 8

I bought this phone like few months ago. When I held it for first time and used for few days I was completely charmed. For some time, this was the best android phone ever created for me but right now it's not. Why is that? Maybe because EMUI is a piece of trash. This is literally one of the worst android skins ever created, along with other ****ty chinese skins of course. The problems are not lack of app drawer or other generic and dumb issues people have about emui, this skin is broken to the core. Made by monkeys with brain damage. I tried all available android version for this phone and all of them have some annoying issues. In other words, this phone is unusable and it shouldn't be because it's not cheap. I'm a power user but constantly fiddling with a phone to make some basic functionality work is annoying even for me. Issues I experienced by firmware version:
- Notifications stops working as soon as phone enter doze (B152) and no, disabling doze is not a fix. Disabling a core system functionality which can be used to save phone from garbage google services doing havoc in the background is not a fix,
- Google backup transport constantly wakes up modems, sometimes every one second, sending very small data batches and completely decimating battery. Sometimes it does this for few minutes and sometimes it does it for hours. It doesn't matter how many google account I have or how many applications I have it happens every freaking time. On every single firmware version. And of course, backup disabled, sync also (all firmware versions)
- Doze is useless on Mate 8, doze is great because it fixes (actually it doesn't fix anything, it's jus workaround) horrible android battery life in standby. Does it works on Mate 8? Of course not ! Because dumb Huawei programmers added every single google service and app to permament whitelist which renders doze useless and main doze feature is ability to block ****ty google services (every version except B560+)
- Incosistent battery life (extreeeeeemeeeely incosistent battery life), same amount of apps in the background, same amount of notifications and one night - 1 % of battery, another one - 10%, amazing (all firmware versions).
- killing applications in the memory after long time of inactivity (of course killing apps, which shouldn't be killed, added to either protected or not closed apps, depending on version). I leave phone with 5 apps open in the background, at the morning only 1 is left in the memory. What is this? 50$ phone for christ sake?
- propably more smaller issues i forgot.
So is there a way (maybe some magic firmware version) to fix this phone? So instead of being garbage it will be actually useful and not frustrating? If not I'm selling this because I honestly can't remember a phone which annoyed me that much. Since 2006. And no, those are not my issues or I'm not using it wrong. These are well known issues baked deeply into crappy emui source code and "I don't have them" means I don't notice them.
I got this phone a few weeks ago, and I'm also unhappy with it. Specifically, the mirror screen function is super pixelated on my TV and almost unusable. No other Android phone I've used has this problem.
Update to Nougat with Emui 5. It's imho a huge improvement. Very very happy with it. Will never go back to Samsung or HTC.
Sent from my HUAWEI NXT-L29 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I got a DLOO version. Admittedly, had a frustrating time trying to root, debrand. But once done, I'm now on L29C432B320 and using Nova launcher. No issues on usability or battery, etc. As suggested, hopefully EMUI 5 will further enhance the experience.
No problems with mine...that I know of...
I'm 100% stock at this time, had it for about 3 months
L29C185B180
With all the headaches of upgrading at this point, I'll just stick it out a while on the current
build...I don't use the default launcher, but use Nova Prime.
If you have chinese version (AL10, DL00 etc), debrand to 432 and use build 560. Doze works, background apps works, battery life is pretty great and most importantly notification pulldown and notification icons are good.
My Mate 8 has been working fine till now.
B152. Stopped reading there. You won't put any effort in using the inbuilt updater and yet you come here to complain?
B180 and higher has all your problems solved and it's available to all handset versions.

Smart doctor-conserve memory setting missing

Hello
After i updated to oreo i did a factory reset then i installed all my apps .I wanted to use the conserve memory in smart doctor (smart doctor->tap memory->tap three dots->conserve memory). This saved a lot of ram and battery. What can i do?
Oreo does already a preaty good job managing the memory. No need for that setting (even in Nougat there is no real reason).
You can use greenify for that, or even Servicely - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.franco.servicely

Idk why but It got significantly slower since the update. The big problem is that is slower in the ui.Before the update hearthstone was lagging a lot but now everything with this phone is lagging.I honestly don't know what to do.Maybe the phone is faulty?
Check you backgroud apps... Maybe is one there that is using more resources.
Interesting... as far as I know on Nougat, disabling some crucial system apps (or even using adb to uninstall them without root) was causing this option to disappear. Yesterday I started disabling some bloatware on my Oreo H870 and I was like "hey, does this option already disappeared?" and yes... it was gone... so I proceed to disable more stuff
But you say that it's gone anyway... As DJPRMF mentioned - Oreo does really good job with memory management. You can also disable background activity for some apps so it's better than on Nougat in my opinion.

Idk but i think that is something wrong with my unit.I mean after the update and factory reset i started to witness freezing and stuttering and not in games because i even deleted them (hearthstone is just so laggy on my phone idk why) my phone froze in the home screen and in youtube. When i checked to see if there is a misbehaving app in the battery usage setting there was nothing everything was normal. I honestly don't know what to do.I can't send it on warranty right now because i need the phone. Any advice?

It's really hard to tell what's the real cause. I also have problems on Oreo but they're not that annoying (practically only related to battery life but NOT standby time which is perfect now). About the stuttering - I also can't say anything, I have absolutely no games installed on my phone.
Try enabling Developer Options (tapping build number 7 times on About Phone) and there is an option to see running services / active services (idk how it's named in English) which is old-style Android task "manager" where you can see RAM usage for currently running and cached-in-memory apps. Maybe you'll find something there?

I looked in that setting but all was normal.I just saw the apps like google and twitter, facebook and mostly things i know i use. The thing is that when i was scrolling to see the list of apps there the scrolling motion was just so laggy. I forgot to mention the battery life that dropped from 5-6 hours sot to barely 4 hours and it's not that i have stopped using it. Idk why this phone is behaving like this.I don't even have it for a full year(just 7 months).I honestly don't know what to do.I have a friend who owns a honor 7 lite and it runs hearthstone perfectly my g6 just lags in it.

Really Slow

Am I the only one experience problems with the phone being slow after few hours of usage? I use it for SNapchat, Facebook and Instagram. Nothing else, and it takes minutes to load the apps. I have contacted Nokia Support and they won't help. So I was hoping if a happy soul would be helpful and help answering my question!
EDIT! Huge thanks to Lincoln357 for a temp fix until Android 9 is released!
Hey guys,
I was very annoyed with Nokia 5 performance, contacted the support and they told me that all of that will be fixed in the next big update (Android 9, Q1 2019), so I poked around like I usually do and managed to speed up my phone significantly. This is what I did: first, enable developer settings, dial down animations to 0.5x or even off, then enable GPU rendering as well as tether hardware acceleration, set 4 processes in the background and voila! Phone is much much faster and more responsive, it almost feels like another device! Try this, you have nothing to lose.
I usually find closing down all of the open apps(Press the menu button to open task manager then swipe the applications to the left) usually helps. Failing that a power off then back on again. At least once a week
Thats weard
My Nokia 5 works perfectly with Android 8 and apps like Snapchat etc.
As I bought it I disabled most of the GoogleApps, like Google Music or Google Mail and most of the time the phone runs very smooth.
The only (small) problem I have is that Android close Snapchat in the background, so it needs a few seconds till I can use the app. But except this, I've never had any problem like you
Maybe you must clear the cache once a week with an app like CCleaner or your internal storage is full and Android have problems to works good
Otherwise go the settings and look what app uses much rescources
I hope that it helped you a bit

2 options: roll back to Nougat or restart your phone every day or two. I found that when you get used to restarting, it's not that bad. Before going to sleep set alarm clock and just restart the damned thing. Or in the morning while having a coffee or getting dressed. Every day the phone is like new. And RAM is cleaned up, so it can store more apps (that works I believe with all the phones) (Nokia 5 is capable of holding 15+ apps in the background for a full day after restart and like 4-5 after 2 days).
Yeah, here too. When I got the phone it was running Nougat 7.1.2 and updated same evening to Oreo. I haven't got a chance to see how it worked on Nougat but now phone is slow, laggy, sometimes unresponsive etc. I also contacted Nokia support but there's no help from them. My kid has Ulefone S7 with MTK CPU and 2 gigs of ram and that phone is lightning fast compared to mine, which is absurd, it even has better Antutu score. Fact is that Oreo for Nokia 5 isn't polished enough and makes the phone slow and Nokia itself won't do anything about it yet.
Uninstall Facebook, wipe cache

I had the same problem after updating Nokia 5 to Android 8.1. This is how I fixed it:
1. Uninstall Facebook and Instagram - they are notorious resource hogs
2. Wipe cache partition (no need for factory reset)

Doesn't work for me. I've tried before to tweak Nokia 5, no avail!
Now i can even FREEZE the System with google Earth!!! Just like i did in my previous NOKIA 5. You just have to browse on GE, jumping from site to site, and eventually, Nokia 5 will crack! This show up massive problems with, maybe memory, I/O... i don't really know, but this hardware has severe faults in it...

But 4 processes aren't much...?
I think that the system would kill almost every app in the background... The phone should be faster, but the apps need more time to start

Did not work for me.
The best thing that worked for me was to install apps to manage the apps that BOOT up with the phone... even though i don't understand that logic, because after using ALL in ONE TOOLBOX, and disabling all the APPS, and enabling them again, i had then fewer apps on the list... I don't fully understand this mechanism...
Still, i'm going nuts with my SECOND NOKIA 5!
It's performance is problematic, i can crash it in a few minutes with apps like Google Earth, etc. Using this phone is a real PAIN: https : //community.phones.nokia.com/support/discu*ssions/topics/7000022723
Can you please tell me what's the SPEED of the INTERNAL MEMORY (write speed) that you are getting? I'm having a discussion here, and someone says that there is NOT possible that a MEMORY CARD could have better performance than the internal memory, BUT IT DOES! In both my NOKIA 5 (one i returned, the other... still problematic!)
I've used https : //play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co*m.a1dev.sdbench
and https : //play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co*m.andromeda.androbench2
Results are consistent!
BOTH internal memory and CARD have 50 to 60Mb/s WRITE SPEED! This is NONSENSE! :\
Any other phone even with unknown chinese brands have MUCH higher internal memory WRITE speed...
This solution worked beautifully for me especially after i did a factory reset aswell. Also got a expansion card and installing most of the apps on it. Seems to be the OS quite a bit if the crappy internal memory card isn't too full
After much trouble I decided to switch to Xiaomi and I didn't regret it! The phone with the same amount of ram and quad core newer CPU works much faster than Nokia 5. Games are loading faster, there's no lag at all, everything is pretty much better. Couldn't wait for Android 9 to see if it would speed up the phone and Nokia support didn't help me at all. This phone is even a bit cheaper than Nokia was 4 months ago. My problems are solved.

Is there a way to test memory? Lots of weird issues!

I'm not sure if it's my device or an OS update or what. For whatever reason, apps just don't seem to be able to stay running in the background on my OP5. Doesn't matter what kind of app it is, but whenever I to switch to it using the recent's list or pressing the icon, they almost always seem to start up as if they haven't been opened yet. It seems to be getting worse as time goes by. I'm running the lastest OS version and have also factory reset my phone as well as removed a bunch of unused apps and photos.
The thing is my first device didn't have this problem. But I had a hardware issue and my phone was replaced. But about the same time I got my replacement phone, I also had a major OS upgrade occur. So I'm not sure if my replacement device has some sort of defect, or it's just a normal thing that happens now.
Also, on top of apps always starting up from scratch every single time no matter how long it's been since I just used them; now I'm finding apps disappearing from my recently used list! WTF is going on???
I have all optimizations disabled as much as I can, I've deleted a ton of apps and photos to make sure I'm not running out of memory. Yet this phone is still acting very weirdly.
I've searched and used some "memory testers" that I've found in the Play store and they say everything is fine. But I'm not confident they are actually testing the memory or system properly.
Help please!!

But I have been having these issues for the better part of a year, well before I got the Pie update. Granted, Pie has made it much worse, but it's been going on for a very long time now. And it seems to be getting much worse as time goes by.

There is no solution for this. Maybe you can try a custom kernel. Apps killed in background is a normal thing for OnePlus.
https://dontkillmyapp.com
You can see this article
This is beyond acceptable now. Apps are being closed while I have them open and are using them! It's different apps, different types of apps, random times, nothing to connect them. Is there anything at all that I can do?

Using Google Maps last night = Extremely sluggish?!

I used Google maps last night, as usual when going to a new place, but this time my phone was extremely sluggish and almost non-responsive to when trying to use other apps while Google Maps was in use. It was literally taking 10-20 seconds to open apps (stock and 3rd party) and even my music was stuttering sometimes.
On At&t
Latest firmware with October security patch
I restarted it, but had the same issue on the way home.
Anyone else have this issue, or know what could be causing it?

You could try clearing the cache for Google Maps and if that doesn't help try clearing both the cache and data for Google Maps.
If that doesn't help either hit all apps on your home screen and close all background apps.
I don't have AT&T firmware which is fairly heavily modded by AT&T but you could have some corrupt data in the Google Maps app (which clearing the app cache and data should fix) or an app running in the background that is using too much memory.
The latter shouldn't be a problem on a $1000 flagship phone but last week my unlocked S10+ issued a pop up warning that my device was running out of memory and that I needed to close running background apps to avoid performance problems.
Samsung's One UI has way more garbage running in the background than MIUI, EMUI, Oxygen or stock Android. Prior to the S10+ I haven't owned a Samsung phone since back in the Galaxy 3 days but the Galaxy and Note phones developed a bad reputation for slowing down and becoming sluggish after 6-12 months of use.
That might be what's happening to you.
If nothing else helps a complete factory reset of your device and fresh install of your apps (rather than from a Google Cloud Backup) should make your phone run like new again.
If it doesn't then you might be experiencing a hardware problem that requires service.
