My gripes with Mate 8 - Mate 8 General

I bought this phone like few months ago. When I held it for first time and used for few days I was completely charmed. For some time, this was the best android phone ever created for me but right now it's not. Why is that? Maybe because EMUI is a piece of trash. This is literally one of the worst android skins ever created, along with other ****ty chinese skins of course. The problems are not lack of app drawer or other generic and dumb issues people have about emui, this skin is broken to the core. Made by monkeys with brain damage. I tried all available android version for this phone and all of them have some annoying issues. In other words, this phone is unusable and it shouldn't be because it's not cheap. I'm a power user but constantly fiddling with a phone to make some basic functionality work is annoying even for me. Issues I experienced by firmware version:
- Notifications stops working as soon as phone enter doze (B152) and no, disabling doze is not a fix. Disabling a core system functionality which can be used to save phone from garbage google services doing havoc in the background is not a fix,
- Google backup transport constantly wakes up modems, sometimes every one second, sending very small data batches and completely decimating battery. Sometimes it does this for few minutes and sometimes it does it for hours. It doesn't matter how many google account I have or how many applications I have it happens every freaking time. On every single firmware version. And of course, backup disabled, sync also (all firmware versions)
- Doze is useless on Mate 8, doze is great because it fixes (actually it doesn't fix anything, it's jus workaround) horrible android battery life in standby. Does it works on Mate 8? Of course not ! Because dumb Huawei programmers added every single google service and app to permament whitelist which renders doze useless and main doze feature is ability to block ****ty google services (every version except B560+)
- Incosistent battery life (extreeeeeemeeeely incosistent battery life), same amount of apps in the background, same amount of notifications and one night - 1 % of battery, another one - 10%, amazing (all firmware versions).
- killing applications in the memory after long time of inactivity (of course killing apps, which shouldn't be killed, added to either protected or not closed apps, depending on version). I leave phone with 5 apps open in the background, at the morning only 1 is left in the memory. What is this? 50$ phone for christ sake?
- propably more smaller issues i forgot.
So is there a way (maybe some magic firmware version) to fix this phone? So instead of being garbage it will be actually useful and not frustrating? If not I'm selling this because I honestly can't remember a phone which annoyed me that much. Since 2006. And no, those are not my issues or I'm not using it wrong. These are well known issues baked deeply into crappy emui source code and "I don't have them" means I don't notice them.

I got this phone a few weeks ago, and I'm also unhappy with it. Specifically, the mirror screen function is super pixelated on my TV and almost unusable. No other Android phone I've used has this problem.

Update to Nougat with Emui 5. It's imho a huge improvement. Very very happy with it. Will never go back to Samsung or HTC.
Sent from my HUAWEI NXT-L29 using XDA-Developers Legacy app

I got a DLOO version. Admittedly, had a frustrating time trying to root, debrand. But once done, I'm now on L29C432B320 and using Nova launcher. No issues on usability or battery, etc. As suggested, hopefully EMUI 5 will further enhance the experience.

No problems with mine...that I know of...
I'm 100% stock at this time, had it for about 3 months
L29C185B180
With all the headaches of upgrading at this point, I'll just stick it out a while on the current
build...I don't use the default launcher, but use Nova Prime.

If you have chinese version (AL10, DL00 etc), debrand to 432 and use build 560. Doze works, background apps works, battery life is pretty great and most importantly notification pulldown and notification icons are good.

My Mate 8 has been working fine till now.

B152. Stopped reading there. You won't put any effort in using the inbuilt updater and yet you come here to complain?
B180 and higher has all your problems solved and it's available to all handset versions.

Apps preventing phone from sleeping

So I am really angry at Android now, with all the issues and difficulties it is getting me through. Although visually and practically I still prefer it to iOS, there are some really annoying issues with it, that concern battery life/stability.
So there are apps that prevent your phone from sleeping, either leaves speaker on, or other BS. I have to close them every time I stop using the phone, to avoid a really stupid issue I had today. I recharged the phone 100% in the morning, later that day I went to check e-mails, sent a couple sms etc. and then I played this game called Pou, I left it running, the screen was off, but I didn't close it. Ended up with empty battery in 3 Hours.
This is ****ing ridiculous, what kind of smartphone is that, if it can't understand that I'm not playing games when the screen is off.
Is there at least a faster way to close all open apps, other than swiping from left to right 20 times every time you stop using the phone?!?!
What apps are causing the issue?
You're blaming the OS for the behavior of an app made by a bad developer. The vast majority of applications will not do that. iOS avoids that by limiting the cases in which an app is allowed to run in the background. You can argue that it's a superior solution for the end user, but it limits the ability for an app to actually do anything in the background.
Many custom ROMs build in a "kill all" button in the recent apps view. It's really not necessary though. You've identified an application that has this issue, so just make sure to kill that one app when you're done with it. Again, most applications won't have that problem.

That helped me so many times till I understood it....
The place to go, to get a definitive understanding of wakelocks is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809&highlight=betterbatterystats
This is the thread for BetterBatteryStats, which is really all you need to troubleshoot why your device doesn't sleep enough.
Also, look at Greenify, which hibernates the apps you tell it to, a pretty unique trick.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155737&highlight=greenify
And as a last suggestion (frowned on by the purists at the betterbatterystats thread, but I find it really useful) use DS Battery Saver Pro, which will switch off wifi and reconnect every 10 minutes, amongst other tricks.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2030696&highlight=ds+battery+saver
As an aside, I hear that iOS7 has impressed its user base with all sorts of hidden options which stop the phone resting, so maybe it's just a question of complexity . The good news is that, especially with the knowledge that is shared in betterbatterystats, it won't take you long to troubleshoot what your problems are, and the other 2 apps which will resolve your issues are pretty straightforward to use.
There are free versions I recall in the first post of these threads, I use the Pro version of DS Battery Saver since I prefer to configure my own profile.
Thank you everyone for replies.
I have not rooted the phone, so Greenify is no option for me, not really up to going through all rooting and ROM installing process in order to maybe succeed in solving the issue.
Specifically talking apps that leave speaker ON (It keeps hissing) and keeps phone awake, if you do not close them are following : Asphalt 8, Need For Speed Most Wanted.
The thing is I am not sure who to blame really, yes there are many apps that work normally and don't cause these issues, but then again why is the keeping the phone awake allowed in the first place, downloaded apps that would need to work that way should need special permissions. I understand there might be apps that want to keep ON/playing something after you have quit them, but if that's the case, then user should be able to deny certain permissions to prevent this from happening. The OS is complex enough, why not give even more options then or just this one at least.
Not sure how other people manage with this problem, I can't find anyone mentioning anything about Asphalt 8 and Android having this problem, people just deal with that they have battery draining to 0% in 5 hours? I know many people with smartphones 75% barely ever closes any programs from multitasker, most of them are iPhone users though. But how do they manage to live with their phone if they have this. I did manage to find people complaining about Pou draining battery, solution was to just uninstall the app, ridiculous.
I can't be the only one having these issues.
Well, the Android "style guide" has the back button as the exit function, so instead of leaving it running in the background, you may want to try backing all the way out.
It's been about a year since I played Asphalt (6 I think it was), but I vaguely remember it had an exit button which explicitly closed down the app.
Could be worth trying that. All the same, install the free xda edition of BetterBatteryStats (in the first post I think) and then look at the partial wakelocks, you'll quickly see what is stopping the phone sleeping.

It really is like that, this fixes a small part of this issue! If you exit the game using the back button, the application closes the resource, but leaves it available at the multi task panel.
But, when I had iPhone, I could play the game, lock the screen, go home, for example, and continue where I left off, no battery drainage or anything. Only when you fill up the RAM memory it stops least recent processes.
Often it is very annoying to tap multiple times the back button (Sometimes even on screen you have to press quit multiple times (Quit current game & quit menu)) until you get to exit the application. And you can't continue where you left off, if you do that.
What the most bothers me about this is if I suddenly have something urgent and I don't turn off the application, my phone could drain a heavy amount of battery percentage till I remember to close them or check something on the phone/continue where I left off.

Guys, this isn't the only issue with the OS. I had bad battery drainage from Wi-Fi & mobile network location setting also. I have various Google app problems, also with drainage, freezing and lag with Google Chrome, Google+ keeping phone awake. I would consider that as a property of Android OS, because the software was already installed when I got the phone. Chrome is the default and only internet browser in the beginning and it should work properly.
So I am not sure who to blame, maybe the developers can't find a workaround from the problem, because the OS is not behaving correctly, and I don't think that it's inappropriate to blame also the OS, since even the default apps and settings have problems same as some apps do.
I have used Chrome daily since it was first released for Android and have never had any real issues with it. Occasionally it will give me a problem where I need to restart the app but that's probably about once a week. Google+ should only keep the phone awake if you have it set to upload your photos automatically, and even then there's a setting to force it to only do the uploads when on the charger.
I think the key issue is that you're used to an OS that does not involve any thought from the user. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it's a distinctly different approach from Android. Apps are allowed to run when the phone is asleep because that can provide additional functionality. I'm sure you wouldn't complain if Pandora was playing music and thus running when the phone was asleep. And that would hit your battery hard. iOS only allows applications to run under very specific conditions, thus limiting what they can do but making sure you don't end up with any "runaway" applications. Android puts the responsibility on the developer to make their app handle battery life well and on the user to make sure they're using decent applications.
Things like the mobile network and WiFi location are used by Google Now to provide location-based data. If you would rather have the improved battery life, turn Google Now off. Some of us would rather have the functionality, but you have the option to disable it.
Keep in mind also that the Nexus 4 just doesn't get as good battery life as the iPhone 4 or newer.

I have never had a OS that I am fully satisfied with, that is normal, but I am always very aware for issues, always scanning for issues, I really hate that about myself, I am a perfectionist, I will not calm down until I get everything just the way I think it should be... So that makes up very difficult relations with any software I use, too bad for me.
Android apps do have more functionality, more freedom than iOS, and I very much appreciate that. BUT if that functionality results in 90% to 0% in 3 hours, when you forget to turn off 1 app after using it... please, I feel like it's a duty to take care of my smartphone, close app after you are done or the phone will die, and you will be left without a phone for the entire day.
I don't like that instability when you can make 1 thing wrong and it all goes to pieces, not when there are people using other phones with almost the same functionality and no problems like that.
No matter who I have to blame this on, I have this issue and it is because of Android & because of the developer of the app.
It's very sad, I really want Android to be more stable with this

There are hundred millions of Android users, we don't all gets wakelocks. I don't have this problem and my phone is stable. Once you are using Android, you are no longer special and pampered in a walled garden like iOS users.
If you have battery drain due to Google services, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2385843
I suggest doing a factory reset and not install crap apps like anything by Gameloft, just play them on Apple devices. If you gets a wakelock, make a shortcut on your desktop to Apps and check on what apps are running in the background, one of the app in the list could be the issue.
I know you don't want to root, but I suggest do it anyway and install Greenify, hibernate any apps you don't want autostarting when you boot up the phone. Watch out for apps that both runs in the background and ask for too many permissions. I know there is an app that limit the maximum app that can run in the background, but I don't know the name, you can set it in the phone's Developer mode, but it doesn't persist on reboot.
Maybe the difference is like moving from an automatic car (iOS) to a manual (Android).
At least before "multitasking" arrived to iOS, an app no longer in the foreground was effectively exited. Android's memory management is much more complex than that, and apps are kept in memory until a new app requires the RAM being held by a previous one.
There is a clear advantage to this since apps "reopen" instantly, but if you're not careful there could be continued drain from apps still open but not in the foreground.
Incidentally - I don't follow Apple closely - iOS7 has been slated by users for the scenario you describe, I believe!
Google's apps offer all sorts of wonderful location-based features, for which the phone inevitably needs to know its location. Coarse location (via triangulation of radio towers) is not a problem, but "fine" requires the GPS to be used, and that does drain the battery.
So you need to consider whether you want all that location based stuff from Google.
Wifi is also a big drain, and that is why I get my phone to switch on every 10 minutes via DS Battery Saver. The upside is that the phone sleeps regularly, but the downside is that Whatsapp messages etc don't arrive immediately.
As you can see, Android offers you the ability to choose to be uber-connected/always on, or to have a better battery consumption. Since each individual is different, you can choose what is important to you.
I just had that drain second time happening. I don't remember how I left that stupid game, but I ended up with 2% battery and phone turned off.
I think I exited using the back button. What the hell.
Pou is known to kill your battery.

Since it's a virtual pet game the developer probably did not code it to close when you hit the Back button, so you need to kill it through Recent Apps. Or just uninstall it.

This is bad... Now it is developers fault, but why on earth should Android OS allow this kind of behavior on any app... This is not a simple background service, this was running fully when the screen was off. 2-4 hours is the screen on time averagely I get, 3.5 hours without screen on, it's damn fast draining.

We've already been through this. You're fine with your phone's music player running in the background when the screen is off, right? It's the exact same behavior, just that Pou uses more resources and has no reason to be running. Apple puts heavy restrictions on what an app can do in the background (playing music being one of the only exceptions). Google leaves it up to the developer and user to manage it.
If you think that is a problem with the OS, I really recommend you go back to the iPhone. Not being mean or anything, but you clearly either do not understand the differences in philosophy between the two operating systems or you understand it and prefer the iOS way.

You said that user and developer can manage resources of apps, how can a user manage them? Can I fix this specific problem myself somehow?

Any reviews for Stock Firmware 32.2.A.0.305

Hi
Just wondering how those running Stock Firmware 32.2.A.0.305 have found the phone to be working?
Any issues or improvements with:
- battery life
- overheating
- phone/wifi signal
- fingerprint sensor
- camera photo quality
- Bluetooth music jitter
Or anything else?
Thanks
R
I'm running Heptyle's kernel, .305 Custom DE and debloated with script.
I haven't reached conclusions yet but so far I think my battery life is better than .253
During app installation (clean installation) I got the feeling it ran less hot.
No further differences until now regarding to your other items.
I'm only going to run STOCK I'm not going to root the phone.
Nothing special here.
Volume for notifications got fixed. And security level is aug 2016 (shame on Sony)
The option to enable the google now pane in the Xperia Launcher (beta?) is back. Note that I did join that Google+ group for getting beta updates of the Launcher.
Camera format settings were reset for me after the upgrade. The version of the app is now 1.0.C.2.7 but I didn't check before the upgrade what it was.
So far it's been smooth, but nothing notably new.
Feels just about the same in all regards
I'm running 32.2.A.0.224 and heard bad things about .253 so have not updated.
I upgraded to the latest one (.305) from EE (UK) on Thursday, and accidently bricked the device (took over an hour to upgrade and so I forgot it was upgrading - d'oh) so have ended up with a clean install.
- battery life : At this time of the day I used to be at 52% (.253), currently 80% (has been off charge for 5 hours so far), was pretty poor for the first two days while Google Play music was hammering the WiFi connection downloading music (why can't it see what's already on the SD Card - argh!), but still an improvement of .253 which was appalling.
It used to be that Google Play Services and Android System were the top users by a country mile - today it's Screen (27%) and Beyond Pod (9%)
- overheating : Certainly running cooler
- phone/wifi signal : No issues before or since
- fingerprint sensor : No issues before or since
- camera photo quality : No issues before or since
- Bluetooth music jitter : As solid as it has been since the last upgrade, i.e. Bluetooth is problem free, Wired occasionally jitters approx 20 minutes after losing Wifi.
Or anything else?
WiFi Calling still temperamental (i.e. needing a reboot), less of an issue for me now I have VoLTE and new masts cover work and home better.
Thanks very much for that excellent and detailed response
I hope this will fix things. On .253 I'm having issues with the finger print scanner, saying hardware is unavailable after long periods of not using the phone. Also, the camera crashes when trying to take a video. gifs and videos on apps such as facebook or youtube doesn't play too. Restart fixes things but it's annoying that I have to do it at the start of the day, every single day. Would love to hear from somebody with same issues who upgraded from .253
I updated to this and done a factory reset (I always do this after installing new update). My device for more than 10 hours now has problem with volume.
If I play any music (on full volume) for more than 1 seconds the volume level is reduced dramatically. My phone has never been in contact with water or anything. As of now I have turned the phone off/on and still no difference. I have used Google Play, Spotify and the same problem occurs.
On the other hand it doesn't heat up. Battery life seems a tad better if I recall so far. Other than that no difference apart from a message I got about battery charging.
Seems to be the hearing protection. New build.prop in .305 is without persist.audio.hp entry. Just re-add it to build.prop (persist.audio.hp=false), reboot and should be working again (you need to be rooted).

Di you have Root?
Ever have problems before?
Yes, I'm rooted (just check tobias waldvogels rootkernel thread), but you need to have unlocked bootloader first (don't forget to make TA backup!).
i found that the phone gets warm (more than previous firmware) when browsing the web using chrome.
i noticed that the sony email client doesnt check/update as quickly enough compared to previous firmware.
i did notice couple of things have been fixed, but my overall suspicion of this firmware is that it introduces more issues than it fixed.
also some kind of security has been introduced to stop you from hiding apps such as the quick apps bar.
im also curious why sony introduced that "battery optimization"? has it to do with maybe the batteries starting to bubble hence causing the back cover to crack? so by reducing the charge amount it sort of stops that from happening?
im also running stock firmware.
I would appreciate you come back w/ a review after a month of usage. If you have been using Android for a significant amount of time, then you know that it's always good in the beginning. I don't think much stock should be put in a review done after a day besides ease of installation and (maybe) initial impressions, imho
ive gone back to .253 firmware. this previous version seems to work much better on my australian z5 compact.
no heating issues. battery is better. email app works better etc. etc.
yes it does have the annoying low volume and a issue with the sms app (when trying to add certain photos). but overall to me it works better than .305 version.

A few weeks ago, I tried this. From @FcukBloat
But for me it didn't work. When I flashed, I got a message that the zip was corrupt (which I can't believe, and it's not the first time this happened). And I also had a problem with Online Nandroid, so in the end I had to redo it.
This time, I just did manually what the script should automate. Next time I'll figure out how to build it myself, if I'm smart enough.
So after a week of 305 vs 253 - I've managed to get through to the end of the day without needing to charge one or twice throughout the day every single day, the phone is running much cooler (i.e. most of the time there is no heat detectable), and is also less laggy, especially when launching the camera. Battery life is getting better by the day too - now at 60% (after being off charger for 12.5 hours) with Google Play Music, twitter, and an hour of MapMyWalk (so GPS usage) - on 253 I'd have been below 20% at this point of the day.

so i guess il need more Swapfile\Z-ram @1s

Removing the downloaded but not installed Nougat update

Hi, first post. I asked the question on another site some months back about deleting or stopping the install notification about the downloaded, although not installed Nougat update, no answers were forthcoming. My phone on 6.0.1 works great and I have no issues that warrant an upgrade. I have hardly any apps installed on it and really only use it for light internet, photos, the phone and GPS. I don’t really want to update it to Nougat due to some of the horror stories I have read. I am not (yet) very Android proficient.
Can I just leave the downloaded Nougat updated installed, but stop the daily notification to install it?
Or
Can I easily delete the downloaded but not installed Nougat update?
In this case I subscribe to the notion, if it isn’t broke don’t touch it. Maybe I am being too overly cautious.

Hardware: XT1642.
Version: 6.0.1
Build: MPJ24.139.23.4
Security Update: 1 May 2016
Any help steering me in the right direction is appreciated.
Cheers,
@CC2005
If you remove downloaded files, still it will not stop, then you will get notification for new update available and to download it.
Better if you update to latest version,
otherwise you need to restrict notification for moto updater app or data for it. (I don't remember correctly if those feature existed on MM, as the way it is present in N)
It looks as if I will have to just go ahead and install the OTA Nougat 7.0 update that has downloaded; as there doesn't seem to be a simple way of stopping the notification to install it. As mentioned, I didn't want to install Nougat as it works perfectly now on 6.01, maybe I am just worrying about nothing, obviously Nougat 7.0 doesn't stuff up all devices.
It is still in warranty so if an OTA update causes problems I may be able to return it?
Cheers

If there is any problems and if it's under warranty, you can surely take it to the service center.
As far as I know, if you get a replacement device, it will be updated to the latest version out of the box. So there is no way going back to MM.
If you still want to use MM, your only hope is custom ROMs.
You can't downgrade the official updates.
Nougat is not that bad. Most of us are waiting for Oreo and I am wondering how are you still on MM
Have a nice Day :good:

I have disabled most of the Motorola notifications "Motorola Update Services", "Motorola Notification" and one or two others. This sometimes prevents the "Install System Update" notification as long as I do not power it off, I put it to sleep by putting if face down. Although most of the time I have to delay the install manually by rescheduling the install time-pressing later etc when the message pops up.
I am a light user, and can get up to 8 days (rarely) usage out of a single charge, I have disabled a lot of Google & other Apps that I don't want to use, and turned off many Google Play Services. Lots of photos, calls and WiFi use I get 2-3 days use, so I am trying to keep the current OS. Also the works reasonably well in very hot weather taking photos and using the GPS-off line maps, it does at times get hot and can suffer camera issues and more so, GPS stuttering and lag above 35C-40+C but shade it from the sun and minimise use and it will work ok.
Cheers & have a great day too.
Ok, I've been operating with Nougat 7.0 for two months now. There are pros and cons and some of the cons I will adapt to as they are only preferences, minor setting and appearance.
My main concerns about the OS update were battery life and heating. Normal use, the battery drains a little quicker without WIFI or Sim data on, not enough to cause concern. But with WIFI and or sim data on, it definitely uses more battery power than before, almost at an average of 10%-15% more-not a scientific analysis. I am not a big data users so again not big concern. Although when using data, downloading, surfing etc, the battery rate depletes at a much quicker rate than before, I would estimate 30%-40% faster. I also notice the battery depletes much quicker when using the camera and the associated heat when using the camera feels (going by sense not measuring it) somewhat higher. The camera and video mode are the one that bother me and I forgot to mention, using offline maps, gps enabled (no WIFI or Sim data activated) the battery use is again higher than before.
So, I would have been better off on MM, yes, but it is what it is and I can work around the battery issue when I know my usage of those features will be heavy. A cheap pocket portable USB charger may need to be purchased.
I haven’t done a factory reset and I have only cleared the cache via settings app. Maybe the next step before a portable pocket USB charger is purchased.
Cheers

Phone working very slow

Hello,
I own Huawei Nova (CAN0L11C) with EMUI 5 and Android 7. I use it for more than a year now and so far everything looked great.
However, recently I'm very pissed of the productivity of the phone. I am using it mainly not in my country of origin as I work in a different country, but since I'm here I noticed that the phone acts veeery very slow. It becomes a huge issue to open google maps and start navigating with it, and during that time i don't want to speak about multitasking. It's almost impossible to swithc to other apps.
Here are some things that I tried:
I've cleared up disk space.
From time to time i use some apps like NoxCleaner to clean the memory and caches but this fixes the problem temporarily
I did uninstalled apps that i dont use
Nothing helps much. I would appreciate any suggestions to make that phone great again!
you have to factory reset your phone ( 1st you have to save your personal files on Sdcard )
Settings -------> Advanced setting ------> Backup & Reset -------> Factory Data Reset ------> Reset Phone
yeah im kinda trying to avoid that, but thanks for the suggestion. this will be my last option if nothing else works.
Same problem there. Factory reset already done but nothing changes... Some news on the subject ?

How's your RAM usage? Don't use anti viruses and task killers. They're useless on Android.
You can try LineageOS 14.
Thanks for sure.
I have at least 1Go Ram free. Lags appears on maps, snapchat and screen freeze...
Same problem exists
Same problem happening, any solution for this issue?
I have been experiencing the same slow speeds & lag. The 1st 6 months I was so impressed with the performance of this phone, even comparing it to the performance of the flagships. It was really that good. But, come 8 months down the line, & I'm battling with lag, poor multitasking & screen freezing. Im trying to avoid factory resetting & on top of all this I don't have access to my trusted tools as I can't unlock the bootloader to gain root.
Can somebody look into this please & provide some feedback. I doubt its the processor or hardware causing these issues as the Snapdragon 625 is one of the best in its class & other phones using it aren't experiencing the same problems. I have a feeling its got something to do with the Android system updates of recent. The Google security patches updates. I noticed the speed issues after each update was installed.
FINALLY got to the bottom of my Huawei NOVA's performance issues!!!
Firstly, just want to say, Google & Huawei you are both a bunch of Monkeys !!!
I've owned my fone for two years now, and the latter year the device was just a piece of Sh1t to use, anything like Google Maps, or Assist or 'OK Google' was ridiculous to try and use, ..and everything else was running at like a 3rd performance of what the phone was supposed to be acting like. (hanging & freezing whenever you needed it to do something)
**What really cheesed me off is the amount of times this phone went back to Huawei under Warranty and they didn't even both running a performance test with all their technical know how to identify which process/application was the culprit - & o yes, it was a specific process (Or update rather as the last guy on this Thread assumed it was).
No Android apps either from the play store - like Process identifier apps etc would show any bottleneck in either RAM or CPU when the go slow or hanging was occurring, ..its like it couldn't detect the "layer" of which the issue was occurring on.
So Huawei just kept Factory resetting my phone and sending it back,.then as soon as I load my apps and within a week its all balls again. (And Im wondering if its one of my apps doing it)
To the point: IT IS THE **** GOOGLE APP **** itself, ..or at least the updates that are applied after your fone has completed its factory reset (If you did this) and the next updates come down automatically via Google Play store. (This isn't Google Assist or the Android OS itself,..the listing in the installed apps is just called 'Google' or 'Google LLC' (Im a new user so cant post any images or links yet untill after 10 basic posts first).
Grrr! ..this has been soo frustrating to find this out, ..so I just uninstalled updates for this 'Google App' so its back to the default original the phone came with, & now my phone is absolutely flying again - whilst I still have it loaded with all my apps etc.
So who's to blame here, ..Google for pushing updates which kill the phone OR Huawei should've identified this and responded with either a fix OR that the middle weight Nova can't handle the latest 'Google App' updates.
For the record - I also managed to get my Nova updated to Android Nougat (Which wasn't officially released on Nova UK phones, .. I got the correct firmware/software update etc,... but also since it went from Marshmallow to Nougat it also was crippling slow and therefore I got it reverted back to Android 6 Marshmallow (Now Im wondering if again it was simply that the latest Google App Updates had been applied to Nougat and messed the phone ?? - anyway ..ill keep it on Android 6 for now,..just happy that its responsive again and flying.
I also have to manually press the Microphone on the screen now whenever I want to speak to 'OK Google' ..its not automatic anymore - or rather constantly listening out for me to say 'OK Google' (So this must be applicable to the latest Google App update - but then this Nova just cant handle being on listen the whole time. ... But anyway if that's the price to pay for excellent performance now, ..then I dont mind at all. stuff automatic listening for me to say 'OK Google' Ill control it manually instead.
Its been so long that I forgot how a phone should be, ..its insane how fast my phone is now since uninstalling the frikken Google App)
Dont let this Google App update from your phones original - Disable Android Auto Updates
Hope this Helps you guys. (Actually it will blimming well help)
Peace

THANK YOU! <3 I have uninstalled the Google App leaving untouched rest of the google services like "google apps services" or "maps" etc. Now my phone is working as it should be!
Hi guys. Any update on your overall speed?
I factory reset the phone and it helped a bit for a while. Then I disabled the Google App and it worked like a charm... for a while. Now it's incredibly laggy again.
It's really frustrating to use. I would love to install a custom ROM, alas I don't have the bootloader unlock codes

Android 10 stable UI lag

Hi,
I've noticed a UI lag when switching between apps or transitioning from an open app to home screen. This didn't happen in the Android 10 beta rom. Anybody have the same issue? I clean flashed the stable android 10.
I can confirm this issue in the stable release. But I would like to add that this lag was already in the beta release and is in my testing not app specific. I would clear the cache and make a reboot.
Go into developer options and disable the three animation types. Everything runs MUCH faster with them off.

I have, and while it does suppress animations, it actually feels less polished. And anyway, it does not resolve the UI lag which is really visible when using th app switcher. It's dropping below like 10fps. As if some gfx acceleration was disabled or the phone was completely overwhelmed
Anyone found a fix? I experience the lag every once in a while, though it's prevalent enough to be annoying.
I am having this literally every time i use the alt-tab like feature. Oneplus managed to **** up the one thing (butter smooth) Google has been bragging about for several versions ???
A simple fix would be toh format device once, as I have clean flashed and I don't face any lags

doesn't change a thing. (and am wondering it would. This feature is supposed to make smoothness (even) better, not worse)
Turn off auto brightness .. maybe it can help
I have been reading up on the A10 stable release posts and I saw a lot of people mentioning the issue that you are talking about here.
Many of them suggested a full format. So basically setting up your device as a new device.
I cannot confirm if this works for everyone but a lot of people are saying that after a fresh install they are not facing any issues.
All of the points mentioned above are just what I read from xda and op forum posts. I personally have not made the switch yet and probably wont be doing so soon.
Hey guys. I encountered the same problem on my Nokia 9. Not quite sure why this error doesn't get noticed by more people.
I think I fixed it for me though.
In my case it seemed that the OLED always on screen (which shows notifications and the time) was the problem in my case. It would always show that there are notifications even if there weren't any and that started adding up. So while the rest of my phone ran buttery smooth, the notification bar and lockscreen began looking like a Diashow. 2-5 fps sometimes. What I think is happening is that all these notifications are buggy and the always on screen can't get rid of them.
So my fix was turning that off and then restarting my phone. Since that everything runs smooth again.
If there is another thread I should post this to please tell me but I only found this one.
Hope it helped.

I think the issue is just : it's a ****show of awful coding, optimisation and non-existent testing. If manufacturers' programmers put in half the effort debugging their software we as "powerusers" at xda/reddit/... put twisting our brains in and out trying find correlating explanations and workarounds as to why we get UI lags or other absurd bugs (like 5GHz wifi not working anymore) on the 10th ****ing iteration of Android, we wouldn't have all of this. It all boils down to the general idea that because it is consumer grade product, quality check is just a non-subject. Apparent quality is just enough at product launch, and further updates (if they do get round to releasing them) can brake everything without manufacturers being held accountable.
The update showed up on my phone on the 25th, but, I'm NOT updating. 9 is too damn stable for me, & I don't see any "features" in 10 that will benefit me.
After reading all this i am not going to update to 10. Yet happy with 9.17.
Tmob unbranded dual sim op6t.
Narrowed down some parameters
I have the OnePlus 6, and have similar issues, that include swapping apps being slow, but not just the swapping of apps, any app that has typing in it, seems to DIE when I start typing. Maybe this is a google keyboard issue or something? I notice the issue most in the Microsoft Teams mobile app. It also tends to only happen when at least 2 apps are open, if it's on it's own, it seems to do fine.
This might just be coincidence but I went into dev settings and turned on "strict mode" and now I can't get it to lag like it previously did.
I just looked at my running services (dev options > running services) and saw that my Bluetooth was using 2.2GB of ram, and youtube was 1.7GB of that. I toggled bluetooth off, then back on and it reset this. I have not modified the strict mode setting above... still have not had any lag, will update this thread if I do get more lag.

Lagging issue I've seen many reporting in xda on the stock rom OOS 10.3.0. But 5GHz is working as expected. I can confirm it because I'm using 5GHz WiFI now and then

After a night/day of normal testing with this, where I would normally have issues, I have not had and of the lag I mentioned above. This seems to have fixed some things. So, I would suggest that you first check to see what running processes are using all the ram, and then turn on strict mode in dev settings, if that doesn't solve your issues. I also have Ram Boost option turned off.
I experience the FPS drop quite often after the update. It's especially noticable when scrolling pages, switching between apps, pulling down the upper panel. The slowness seems to disappear temporarily after closing all apps. But I can't say that some particular app causes the lag.
UPD: A simple test to recreate the problem. I push the square button to switch between apps. Start swiping finger left-right and watch the animation smoothness. After 5-10 seconds comes the wave of low FPS, which lasts for a couple of seconds. Then the process repeats. The slowness doesn't seem to depend on some exact apps that are open.
UPD2: Well, I've just found out that the problem isn't constant throughout the day. There must be some connection to applications running in the background or something like this.
