Call Static in 2 new Moto X Pure XT1575 - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else with the Moto X Pure Edition XT1575 noticed static/white noise sound from the top earpiece speaker while on calls?
Over the weekend I received two new Moto X Pure Edition (64GB Black) XT1575 phones that I ordered from BHPhoto while they were on sale for CyberMonday. I activated both of them on my Verizon Account by putting the SIM card inside (was using a Note 4 and Note 3). HD Voice (VoLTE/Advanced Calling) is disabled on the account. Both Moto X Pures are on Android 6 with the May 2016 security patch (24.221.4).
When using the Moto X Pure phones to make a call (either to each other, to a landline, or another cell) I can hear quite a bit of static/white noise in the earpiece speaker. The loudness of the static does not change when lowering or raising the call volume. It is very annoying and really takes away of the quality of the phone. But when using a wired headset or Car BT, the static is not there, so it only comes from the earpiece speaker.
I have been using smartphones since the original Moto Droid (with the slideout keyboard), and had done reviews on PhoneArena for over 8 years, but the call quality on these two Moto X Pure phones are pretty bad with this static and sound far worse than my Note 4/3/2 that I have here.
It also looks like I am not alone in hearing this call static, as others have posted about it, mostly saying the issue happened after the update from 5.1 to 6.0, as it wasn't there before.

As it is right now, I contacted BHPhoto to see if they can be exchanged for two other Moto X Pure phones and hope they won't have this issue. Otherwise, I'd just return them and go with something else. I originally had wanted to go with the LG V20 US996, but at $800 it is three times the price as the Moto X was on sale.

Have you tried enabling advanced calling? Mine is enabled and do not have this problem.
Second have you tried traveling to a different near by cell tower n make a phone call?

When I switched from my Verizon LG G4 to my 2015 MXPE I trimmed down the microSIM to a nanoSIM and popped it in. When everything booted/activated I had my Advanced Calling 1.0 still activated and working. The only thing I lost was Wifi calling which I never used anyway.
My calls are crystal clear regardless of if I am in an HD call with someone or if I am calling a landline or conference call. I would look into getting Advanced Calling 1.0 activated (do it from Verizon's website in your account preferences) to see if that helps.
Good luck!

Yes, I may not have made it clear in the post above, but I initially had Advanced Calling (VoLTE) not on my account (and disabled in the Moto X Pure) when I placed my active SIM in it, and heard the static in calls. A while later I went to My Account and added "HD Voice Advanced Calling" to my account and made sure it was activated on the phone under "call network settings". But no matter what combination that I tried, or even different cell sites around Ft Lauderdale and surrounding areas, I'm still getting the static.
The thing is, that I only hear it out of the top earpiece speaker. Not when using wired headphones or when using a BT headset or BT Car. So that seems to me the issue is with the earpiece speaker.
I have done many phone reviews before (over at PhoneArena.com) and had experienced this "static" on a few other phones over the years (LG/Moto/HTC/Samsung).

Have you tried backing up your stuff and doing a factory reset from the recovery menu just to rule out any apps making unwanted changes?

Yes, tried a factory reset twice (it was one of the first things I tried) but still have the static/white noise sound. I'm sending them back to BHPhoto for an exchange and will see if the replacements are any better.

Blown Speaker

So, ever since my Droid X arrived via Fed-EX, I've had issues with the ear speaker in-call volume. Turning up the in-call volume much past half way yeilds, what I describe as a vibration buzz, following any sound coming through the ear peice, similiar to a blown speaker. I plan to have it replaced, but wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this issue?? I hope it's not a design flaw for all of the phones... I would like to turn my phone up past half way!!
Other than that, the phone seems great and I can't wait for Froyo to arrive!
droid x speaker buzz
I too have this problem. My Droid X arrived via fed-ex on Monday, 7/26. It was perfect except for one thing: on any call, the voice of the other person has a "power line buzz" overlay to it whenever they speak. When they're silent, there is no buzz, but when any sound is made from the other end, there is a heavy buzz overlay from the speaker, very annoying. It is more prominent when it is a machine voice on the other end, such as voicemail and especially the activation voice (when I first noticed it).
I should point out that there is no buzz on speakerphone, or with a bluetooth headset/headphones, only when listening using the normal phone speaker, which leads me to believe it is a hardware problem.
I filed a "problem ticket" with Verizon technical support today, who told me that they probably wouldn't get back to me until after the weekend because of their hours...

Moto X Pure Droppping Bluetooth Earpiece / Headset - is there a fix?

Hi,
I purchased a new Moto X pure a couple weeks ago and it is dropping my Plantronics Voyager Legend ear piece when I am on a call and a new one comes in (regardless if I let it go to voicemail, try to send it to voicemail, rings in the background or I try to switch callers and pick up the new call); when a call comes in (no other call already on the phone) and I depress the call answer button on the Voyager Legend, it picks up and immediately drops to the phone handset. It is also dropping the earpiece at other intermittent times. I have to turn the ear piece off and back on to pick up a call in progress already but, doesn't always work.
Initially I thought my ear piece had just gone bad, even though it worked normally with my Galaxy S5 and I purchased a new Plantronics Voyager Legend and the new unit also has the same issues but, also works great with the Galaxy S5. I am now convinced this is a software issue on the Moto X Pure.
Has anyone else had this issue and does anyone know how to possibly fix the issue?
Thanks,
Chris
Somewhat related. My MXSP has been dropping connection to my keylink like crazy. I know the keylink of fine because it was previously paired to my G2 without issue. Bluetooth.
It drops my Sena SMH5 helmet comm system too from time to time.

Sounds like this might be happening to more of us than we realize. Has anyone else had Bluetooth connection issues? Have you found a way to resolve it?

Sounds just like my earpiece issue, I think something is killing the connection in the background... I just don't what is dong it or where to find it.
Bluetooth Drops - Known Moto X Pure Issue - On Moto X Pure Forums Also
Looks like this is an issue with the Moto X Pure. It is being discussed on the Motorola Forums here... forums.motorola.com/posts/c9e1881ed7?commentId=992505#992505
Please add your input and comments there, so Motorola knows these appear to be systemic issues, not individual issues with a particular handset. If anyone finds any additional info on how to fix the issue or hears of updates to fix it from Motorola, please post those updates/info here also.
Thanks,
Chris
Does anyone have a status update on getting the BT fixed? I use my phone for work and I can't continue to work like this, toally unreliable and embarrasing in front of clients. Will have to return it if it isn't fixed asap. Shame, I generally like the phone.
Chris
I've been having the same issue with my LG Tone pro. Also if I get a call while listening to music, it won't pause the music when I answer like my old phone did. Really not happy about that...
Also been having issues with my Pebble disconnecting periodically as well
i have a plantronics earpiece (dont know the model # got it from verzion) and it hasnt done it to me yet. had the phone for about a month now.
Anyone... anyone... Buehler?
Still no response from Moto on fixing the bluetooth issue? May have to return the unit and get another phone before the 30 days is up. Very disappointing. Jumped from long line of Galaxy devices to give this a try with high hopes. Looking like a major fail at this point.

Poor call quality

Have only had the phone for a few days but have noticed that the call quality on my phone is horrible. Everyone that I call tells me that the quality is horrible, I keep going in and out and it just sounds like I have no service at all even when i have full 4g.
I have tried everything I can think of (Turning HD calling on and off, turning data on and off, factory reset my phone) and nothing has helped. If someone could please help me that would be great! I love the phone, but this could be a reason why I will be returning and getting a replacement or just something else all together.

I would take it to a Verizon store and have them check it out. See if theirs is the same. I don't have that problem and if it was common I'm sure a lot of people would be complaining about.

Try turning off your HD calling. (S7 comes with HD calling enabled by default... to disable... go SETTINGS > ADVANCED CALLING > switch to OFF ... see if that helps)

I'm having the same problem. The other day it was choppy for a call, and today I got a bad echo. Please post the result, I'd like to know if it's the phone.
Unfortunately while waiting for my phone case in the mail and trying to be careful, I managed to drop the phone and there's a very small chip/bubble underneath the left soft-key so I'll be unable to exchange it if it's the phone.
I shall know tomorrow! I need to get to the bottom of it

Personally coming from a Nexus 6P the call quality is amazing...like perfect. I have Advanced calling enabled as well. I did have issues when I tried to enable wifi calling, but with wifi calling off it's the best voice quality of any device I recall.

Have you tried toggling the voice privacy setting in the dialer to see if that helps. I remember that being a quick fix on some random phone from years ago... Don't even know if that would accomplish anything but worth a shot of nothing else is working.
Just to update my problems with the phone, I think it's inherently different from OP's problem. After talking with the people I experienced the issue with, they could here me fine, I would just hear them in poor quality. But the issue hasn't happened for a few days now and the echo I experienced is due to one person's phone, and I think the issue is on their end. Chalking it up to crappy connection for me.
so after a few days of trying to figure out what the problem was and having a guy at Verizon look at it and installing a new SIM, the phone seems to be working fine. Call quality is normal and no one has complained about it sounding choppy or anything out of the norm. g
I had this problem on my note 3 before sometimes it's just lint not the phone there should be little holes one on top one on bottom they are microphones tiny dot of you get it dirty you sound horrible to the other ppl I had that happen on many phones good luck. Oh be careful use something small to clean but try it.

I have an s7 using the ATT network and the complaints about call quality has led me to looking into switching to a Nexus. I will never buy a samsung again after this experience. The entire purpose of a phone is to have calls go through. I can use my tablet or anything else if I wanted to only have good wifi call quality.
I purchased my S7 in April of 2016 and am having the same or similar problem. If someone is talking to me on the phone and I start to speak or if there is noise in the room, the voice of the caller crackles in my ear and then gets muted completely. The voice will not return until I quit speaking or the room noise changes. All of this happens within milliseconds, so you only catch bits and pieces of the conversation. It is very annoying. We have done all kinds of tests and setting changes to the phone with no results. The poor call quality is random but persists when using the phone earpiece, speaker phone or Bluetooth headset.
Verizon has sent me two replacement phones and one SIM card. Now they are saying that they want to send me a third phone and SIM card.
Any suggestions?
Grrr... I feel you on the cracked device. Thanks for the warning/reminder. I switched off the HD call setting altogether. Just got mine and the call quality is awful; cuts in and out and sounds like electrical interference (one of those old kid voice things that make it sound electric). If these tricks don't work, I am returning it before I 'crack' mine.

calls broken up on the other persons end

Ever since I got my phone wet from the water hose splattering on it like rain the phone has been acting up every now and then. I don't know if it's related. but about 4 out of 10 phone calls people say I"m broke up and they can't hear me or they hear every other word. I can hear them fine. I have to reboot the phone to fix it. I also notice when using the HD recorder that the right channel doesn't have much audio to it when recording in stereo sound. the right microphone is the same one for phone calls. Does anyone else have any of these problems? Is there a solution? I haven't had the chance to call verizon about it yet. They'll just want me to reset my phone before sending a replacement and all that marigamaroo.
update: Since i rebooted the phone last time it's been good so far ad i noticed today when using the sound recorder on stereo sound, it records in both channels now. so whatever goes wrong with my phone it causes the bottom mic to crap out. Affecting phone calls and stereo recording with the bottom mic as as the "right channel" for the recording. I don't know if it's a hardware issue or a software issue. I don't know if resetting the phone would help or what. anyone have this issue or insight about it?
Yes, same issue on AT&T version. Haven't gotten the phone wet though. I have tried a hard reset and it didn't work.
I had that same problem till I turned of VoLTE (voice over LTE) Once that happened every call is crystal clear. Try it.

I figured it wouldn't work. i just reset my phone and reinstalling everything. have to see how it works now. and the bad connection with the headphone jack that the Verizon rep says should be fixed after a factory reset. they won't send a replacement till i reset the phone and try it again. he tried to get me to take it to the corporate store to verify the bad headphone jack and check the phone for damages, but the nearest corporate store is 50miles away. I'm not having that.
I have had headphone jack problems with the G3 and G4 - that all developed the more I used the jack. I haven't really used the jack much on G6, but its frustrating to hear that it may develop issues as well.
I called AT&T about the issue. They did some network reset on their end. If that doesn't work, they said to turn off "Enhanced LTE Services". I'm guessing that's the same setting as the VoLTE that Metalshadow mentioned above.

Is there any way to improve call quality?

I'm on Verizon and recently switched from a M8 to this phone (just swapped my SIM over) and have noticed that cell reception has been an issue. This was a brand new unit and otherwise seems to work perfectly, but I've had numerous calls drop mid call, or I'll lose audio in one direction in the middle of a call. It's terrible in the car, to the point that I've had to pull over and stay in one spot to actually speak to someone (I'm using a headset while in the car, but I've also had the issue when using just the handset). I'm still on stock 7.1.2, but I noticed that today was particularly bad. I'd rather not switch back to the M8, but not being able to stay on a call w/o audio dropping out is an issue.
