Have only had the phone for a few days but have noticed that the call quality on my phone is horrible. Everyone that I call tells me that the quality is horrible, I keep going in and out and it just sounds like I have no service at all even when i have full 4g.
I have tried everything I can think of (Turning HD calling on and off, turning data on and off, factory reset my phone) and nothing has helped. If someone could please help me that would be great! I love the phone, but this could be a reason why I will be returning and getting a replacement or just something else all together.

I would take it to a Verizon store and have them check it out. See if theirs is the same. I don't have that problem and if it was common I'm sure a lot of people would be complaining about.

Try turning off your HD calling. (S7 comes with HD calling enabled by default... to disable... go SETTINGS > ADVANCED CALLING > switch to OFF ... see if that helps)

I'm having the same problem. The other day it was choppy for a call, and today I got a bad echo. Please post the result, I'd like to know if it's the phone.
Unfortunately while waiting for my phone case in the mail and trying to be careful, I managed to drop the phone and there's a very small chip/bubble underneath the left soft-key so I'll be unable to exchange it if it's the phone.
I shall know tomorrow! I need to get to the bottom of it

Personally coming from a Nexus 6P the call quality is amazing...like perfect. I have Advanced calling enabled as well. I did have issues when I tried to enable wifi calling, but with wifi calling off it's the best voice quality of any device I recall.

Have you tried toggling the voice privacy setting in the dialer to see if that helps. I remember that being a quick fix on some random phone from years ago... Don't even know if that would accomplish anything but worth a shot of nothing else is working.
Just to update my problems with the phone, I think it's inherently different from OP's problem. After talking with the people I experienced the issue with, they could here me fine, I would just hear them in poor quality. But the issue hasn't happened for a few days now and the echo I experienced is due to one person's phone, and I think the issue is on their end. Chalking it up to crappy connection for me.
so after a few days of trying to figure out what the problem was and having a guy at Verizon look at it and installing a new SIM, the phone seems to be working fine. Call quality is normal and no one has complained about it sounding choppy or anything out of the norm. g
I had this problem on my note 3 before sometimes it's just lint not the phone there should be little holes one on top one on bottom they are microphones tiny dot of you get it dirty you sound horrible to the other ppl I had that happen on many phones good luck. Oh be careful use something small to clean but try it.

I have an s7 using the ATT network and the complaints about call quality has led me to looking into switching to a Nexus. I will never buy a samsung again after this experience. The entire purpose of a phone is to have calls go through. I can use my tablet or anything else if I wanted to only have good wifi call quality.
I purchased my S7 in April of 2016 and am having the same or similar problem. If someone is talking to me on the phone and I start to speak or if there is noise in the room, the voice of the caller crackles in my ear and then gets muted completely. The voice will not return until I quit speaking or the room noise changes. All of this happens within milliseconds, so you only catch bits and pieces of the conversation. It is very annoying. We have done all kinds of tests and setting changes to the phone with no results. The poor call quality is random but persists when using the phone earpiece, speaker phone or Bluetooth headset.
Verizon has sent me two replacement phones and one SIM card. Now they are saying that they want to send me a third phone and SIM card.
Any suggestions?
Grrr... I feel you on the cracked device. Thanks for the warning/reminder. I switched off the HD call setting altogether. Just got mine and the call quality is awful; cuts in and out and sounds like electrical interference (one of those old kid voice things that make it sound electric). If these tricks don't work, I am returning it before I 'crack' mine.

On calls I get popping sounds. a few times the pops have been so loud I almost dropped.
The microphone is also really low. people can't hear me I use to be able (Gnexus) to set the phone down and talk with it on the computer table next to me but now they can't hear me.

Standard 'is this a hardware problem?' test:
1. If you are on a custom ROM, flash completely back to stock and retest.
2. If you are already on stock, backup all your data and factory reset. Even better, completely wipe the phone and re-install stock and retest.
3. If the issue still occurs, the issue is most likely with the hardware. If the issue no longer occurs, then it was a software problem.
4. If I understand this reply correctly, you have already received a replacement device and the issue still occurs. In this case, you happen to be very unlucky.
As for the Nexus 4 in general, I can only speak anecdotally. I don't have the issue on the seven Nexus 4 devices I've tested: two of my own, three from coworkers/friends who also own the device, and two test devices.

Since the issue only happens during Skype calls and not while using the standard calling function, I would blame this issue on VOIP quality: either your latency is high, Skype is having quality issues, or some combination of the two. I have issues with Skype call quality on both my phone and my PC, and the issues are largely to do with Skype throttling the call bandwidth.
what about my mic issue the sounds very low. is there a way to change the gain on the microphone? I always use my phone by calling 1 of my friends I'm placing the phone beside my desk as I speak with them they can't hear me with this new phone they were able to perfectly hear me with the galaxy Nexus.

No advice?
Guys, since my 6p, almost every call I make or receive, the person on the other end tells me that they are hearing what they said back. It's like an echo of what they said. I head them perfect and no issues on my end.
Anyone else having this issue?
And to add, I'm trying calls with and without case and it doesn't make a difference. Sometimes the echo for the person on the other end goes away after few minutes but most of the time it stays for the entire conversation. I also just today tried whatsapp call but same issue. Very frustrating as everything else on the phone is perfect.
I had this yesterday on WhatsApp
Any ideas? I sure can't be the only one out there with this issue.
It's a typical Google mic cancellation issue like the nexus 5 had. It will never be fixed.

Doesn't look so typical as Internet/forum search brings nothing being reported regarding this on Nexus 6p. Don't care what's on Nexus 5.
The problem is specific to callers on the other end of the phone hearing themselves back when they speak.
I have had the same issues. To fix I lower my volume all the way down then they say it's fine. The other option is to use speakerphone. I did read somewhere people are using their finger to cover the mic hole on the back. I'll try that today.

Here is the best temporary fix. Use a headset with a built in mic.
Also, calls over internet are more likely to get echo. Try a regular phone call, no Google voice and such either, just a regular sim number based call.

Covering the mic hole did help but if my volume was to high it would still do it. It's like the sound vibrations are getting picked up through the phone. Anyways I am rooted and romed. I may look into turning noise cancellation off.
I'm personally having this issue only when the back casing are attached to the phone or when i accidentally cover the back mic with my finger
Posting an update. It seems doing either one of the below fixes the echo callers on the other end are hearing:
1. Cover the mic at the back top of the phone during the call
2. Or Lower the volume to like half or three quarters of the way
I prefer option 2 and all is fine now.

Long term have you had issues in busy places like airports, bars/restaurants? Do people complain of too much noise around you with noise cancelling turned off?
the issue is still persist even after the June OTA. is there any way we can contact Google or Huawei to fix this issue permanently ?
I really love the phone but this issue is frustrating as it is a basic need in any phone. phone calls must be ok. how it can be fixed without root ?
It might be due to phones calls over the internet such as advanced calling on Verizon...I had this issue too a while back but I read somewhere this could be the issue do I turned off of advanced calling(calling over the internet so while I'm on a call I can use the internet over 4g). This is quite annoying since I sometimes do need to use internet while I'm on a call but I think the echo problem is worse.
So far no one has complained about an echo since I turned off advanced calling when before purplpeople would complain or stop talking about every call. Hope this helps
I have been reading on this online trying to find a solution without any comprehensive solutions so would appreciate it if someone could please help me out....
While talking on the phone using my moto x style...the people on the other end say that they can barely listen to me....i have to literally shout to make them hear it...
do any of you face similar issues? am i doing something wrong?.
I am on stock btw and received the OTA MM update a week back
Please let me know what other details you need to identify and solve the problem
Ok so its not just me. It started as soon as I updated to MM. I did find somewhat of a work around. Usually if I take the phone away from my ear (so the display turns on) and then put it back, they can magically hear me again. If that doesn't work I toggle speakerphone mode on then off and it works.

I disabled Enhanced 4G LTE Mode and the problem immediately went away. After a few days, I tried my luck and turned it back on and haven't had a problem with other hearing people hearing me since. Good luck.
Unfortunately am still facing a lot of issues with the calls...my voice sounds muffled and extremely feeble to people and they arent able to hear me....
Am surprised nobody else is facing this issues...did i get a defective piece? Are there any other things I can try out....
extremely frustrated with it and not sure what to do...any help would be immensely helpful
bump...
I'm having the same issue on 2 devices. It happened on both OS's. I'm going to try turning off the enhanced 4g lte option. Maybe that doesn't play well with Verizon. One note I did make was the problem doesn't exist on speaker phone. I kinda thought it was the noise canceling mics being too functional.
Thanks please let me know how it goes and if you are able to find anything...I dont even have the 4g LTE option since I am using the phone in India...
Have tried disabling Ok Google voice activation which helped lot of OPO users but doesnt seem to work on MXPE
I've got the same issue on a phone I just got 3 days ago. Replacement should arrive today.
The problem... Low volume on the handset earpiece accompanied by very low level but constant background static noise. The background noise is low enough to only be audible in a quiet environment. Switch to speaker phone, Bluetooth, or wired headset and the problem is gone. The problem is only on the handset earpiece.

I see, different problem from mine. Audio for the other person on my calls is fine.
My replacement has arrived, but the problem persists. However prior to upgrading the new phone to Marshmallow, it was fine. Seems like a Marshmallow bug.

Thanks a lot for your inputs though...issue is a bit different...
Same issue here ! immediately after MM OTA update (stock vanilla) people start complaining they cannot hear me well !
After sorting most of MM issues this is a major pain in the a**
Let Moto know about this as it makes the phone crippled.
How come there aren't any more complaints about this serious issue !
This is 100% MM related - People complain they can barely hear me on the other end of the line - I sound muffled, stuttered and basically bad to the point they cannot continue the conversation and demand I call them from a land line !
Forget all MM bugs, problems, etc (need I mention the Equalizer went AWOL) now this Smartphone which I highly praised and loved became a ...smart something - with no phone feature.
Help me let Moto support be aware of this issue.
Thanks
I have the same issue, the other person is barely able to hear me.
I'm in Italy and i noticed that this issue come when my phone is in GSM (2G), when i talk in 3G it's ok.
I also made a TEST that you can do, i tried to speak with headphones's microphone and the issue is gone, but when I unplug the headphones the issue came back immediatly (switching the screen on).
Does anyone know how to tell this issue to Motorola?
Everyone of us should send his request to Motorola, to show them this common issue.
Got the following advise from Motorola support on chat - it seems to help - please tell me if it work for you:
please go to settings > apps > all > Audio Effects app - Tap Force Stop - Clear Cache and Clear Data.
Also under settings > apps > all > go to Phone app - Tap Force Stop - Clear Cache and Clear Data.
Now please turn off the phone and when you turn it back on try making a call.

I only recently got the MXPE, and upgraded to Marshmallow immediately. My first call was under Marshmallow's control. It had the background noise and low volume level.
I got a replacement and tried it under Lollipop immediately. It did not have the background noise, but did have low volume. Upgraded it to Marshmallow and the noise returned. So, I would conclude that the noise is a Marshmallow induced issue.
However, I have a second replacement of the way. My thought is that perhaps the noise is related to the low volume issue, which is a hardware problem, and Marshmallow is just highlighting the weakness in some way that results in the noise.
As for the volume problem, this is the first phone I've ever had to use at maximum volume. Even then, it is just adequate. From what i have read on boards like XDA, this is not normal. That, in part, is why I have another replacement on the way.

I don't talk a lot on the phone, so it's taken a couple months to find out this issue.... When I'm talking to someone on the phone, I have to hold the phone pressed up against my face and speak a little louder than I normally do.. If I pull it away any at all, people are always saying they can't hear me or I sound really muffled.
I just called my voice mail and left a message, and this is what I've discovered as well. I knew what I said, but had problems understanding myself unless I held it right up to my face and spoke slightly louder than I've had to do with any other phone.
I heard, back in December, this was an issue and was to be fixed on the next update.... I'm now on a M29P (January release) ROM and nothing has changed.
Has anyone found this to be an issue or have you found a work around/fix for this?
I have the same issue.
When I put the phone in my neck so I have my hands free, people tell me I'm very hard to hear, and it's perfect when I hold it in a normal position...
It's quite frustrating, as I sometimes need to have my hands free..

Same happen here, it's because the noise reduction micro that the nexus 6p has back, check the small hole on the back face of the phone, when you are in a call put your finger there and they will say the same "I cannot hear you well", there are tweaks on the forums, but I have not tested yet, I used to use the speakers instead
If the phone is like 6 inches away they cant hear me, it's a noise cancelling issue, too strict.
Change in build.prop from true to disable noise cancelling.

It sounds similar to what it sounds like when a bluetooth speaker/headseat is too far away from the phone, like garbled, rapid drops in the audio. Moving the phone slightly away from the head (to activate the backlight), or turning it on with the on-off switch when on speakerphone, fixes the problem. But as soon as the light is off again, the problem tends to return.
I think the problem does not happen when on a HD call.

Did you see this thread? I have the same issue... I don't actually talk on the phone much so I haven't experimented with the audio FX. But it's worth a shot.
Thanks for that. I just tried disabling audio effects and we'll see if that solves it.
Nope, still has the same issue, and so does my brother's. It's not usable for me, really.
Yeah, didn't help me either. Some say turning off VoLTE resolves on call speaker audio issues. You could try that.
I turned it off, which I suspect will turn off hi-def audio in calls which, ironically, is the only kind of call audio that doesn't exhibit my issue So far it seems to be affecting 100% of the phones I know about. There must be more information about this somewhere! Otherwise I do like this phone.

Interesting. I really don't talk on the phone much. Also ironic. For me it seems to happen during LTE calls too. But I'm not certain. It's sporadic. I'll experiment more with it when I have time and post back here if anything I do makes a difference. You do likewise.
Same issue, I thought it was a T-Mobile issue or something. Only noticed it since VOLTE came out.

I turned off the option called "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" (under "Cellular network settings") last night, and preliminary results are good -- I haven't heard any of the crackling sounds yet. It's probably too early to say this is the fix, though. Tomorrow I'll be on the phone for a few hours for conference calls and will report back.

Ha, yeah, I was afraid that was the fix. Lemme me know if it works long-term, if you don't mind. I like VoLTE, but that noise interface is irritating.
