Root is automatically activated when the phone has been in free fall for more than 10 seconds. Find a tall building and throw your phone off of it.
Seriously, have a look around before you post questions like this.

With it being a Verizon Droid brand, there's a good chance the answer is never. Probably not a lot of developers with the phone and Big Red is pretty serious about locking it down, hence the answers.

Actually I have looked. I have seen several sources that claim rooting this latest VZW Droid phone is trivially easy. They even post instructions on how to do it.
Now, I wasn't at first going to believe those sources, because they have some odd errors, like 1/2 way thru their instructions they start to refer to the Mot Z Force Droid as being a Samsung phone.
However, based on your knowledgeable answer, I will take your vouching that these sources are being 100% reliable.

Quite the opposite. If there isn't a root method on this forum, then there isn't one that works.

I've seen several sources claiming root for NON-VZW Moto Z phones (i.e.: Bootloader unlocked), I've seen none valid for VZW Droid (i.e.: Locked down like fort Knox)... Guess we have different search engines.
Wrote to Moto, no intention of unlocking it either. So unless someone finds an exploit/backdoor/Universal unlock key, you're SOL.
The current issue is that taking an update will destroy your chances of getting root. Take 0 updates until an exploit is found that will allow us root. Dirtycow/quadrooter are the only linux exploits that we might be able to get to work. Its just a matter of who. I know Jcase (https://twitter.com/jcase?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor) has posted in a couple places about compiling dirtycow and even has an "Android Hacking" basics kinda PDF floating around. He has done a lot in the community (SunShine) he doesn't deserve the hate being thrown at him for not developing a root method for this one device.

Oh. Well now I regret taking all those updates. I still doubt we'll get root on this device tho. I can only hope. It seems XDA forums has gone quiet and essentially given up on trying to root this phone, but I hope I'm wrong about that.

pretty much true
I wish that some developer would even try working on this. I myself have thought of many things and will probably create a separate post for root soon since I have a couple ideas which I feel MIGHT MAYBE work, but I need the XDA community to pitch in and help me think of a method. Like I said, I have a rough idea but it needs refining, which I can hopefully get from the community.
Moto z force jailbreak
So what you guys are saying it's inpossable to jail brake our phone? So I should just go out and get a new phone if I want to jail break it?
I was aware the when I bought my phone used that the Droid version probably wouldn't see root anytime soon but I bought it anyway because I did research online and felt the phone had good enough specs and the UI looked good and had cool features so I personally don't even need or miss having root on this phone. My reasons for rooting phones has ALWAYS been for performance tweaks with occasional UI adjustments.
My last phone was an Acend XT (H611) which before having the bootloader unlocked and flashing a debloated and tweaked stock rom it was an utter POS. I paid $50 for that Ascent XT and I liked it but performance and UI wise it doesn't even compare to the Moto Z Force. So I personally don't even miss having root.

Yeah need bootloader unlocked and Verizon won't let Lenovo Unlock our Droid version.
I am more concerned about when we will get another update for Oreo because it has problems sometimes.... I have to restart my phone once a week because the fingerprint scanner or chop for flashlight stop working or some other random bug pops up.
Damn Verizon, thets how they killed the turbo 2

Lol not like it would hurt, that **** already full of spam and beggers haha
it was somthing in the bootloader that found that the incredible does not have. But rest assured that its bieng worked on and im sure we will have root.
nah, it wasn't the bootloader
looks to me like he flashed a leaked image based on where he starts the video and seeing how he doesnt show us the bootloader or anything involving recovery/fastboot. My guess is that since this was an evo prerelease is that someone at htc with the shipping rom weasled a su apk in there while also having the test keys to sign. I never see anyone talking on irc and i assume we are months away from root.
edit: after looking on the website it seems as if they have done deeper work than i assumed. I believe there may be similarities in what they did and what we need. He mentions that he used his linux background and knowldge of hacking bootloaders. maybe something is in store for us unlucky incredible users
nope it has been stated that it will not work for us. And it looks like my bootloader theroy is wrong..... mmmmm i wonder what it could be.
are you judging by this little footnote? "At this time, we believe that this specific exploit cannot be applied to Incredible." - taken from grack.com . If they did anything to the bootloader i would assume an exploit can be derrived from this method. we dont need to use their entire method. From what i hear their bootloader is a higher version than ours which should make it more difficult to crack. If they ever release how they did it Im sure we can find some hope to help us.

Knowledge is power and not sure what was up your rear when posting but any bit of information on semi similar phones never hurt anyone. Seeing how this isn't a post about an accessory app theme maybe could go into general but this is more of developmental news then general.
Well, I at least feel better knowing others are going through the same "pain" I am faced with. I'll donate my time and resources (I still don't have the Incredible thx to it being sold out everywhere... maybe I will try the Best Buy closest to me... although they kind of stink, they don't even carry any Apple computers while most ever other BB does) to get this fix0rz for the peeple!

Nothing to do with test keys, no leaked images. There is no way to modify it to the incredible.
lol, I knew it was going to be rooted before, but I had some hopes it could have been used to help with the root for the Incredible. Oh well, such is life. I'm sure there are some Verizon Android developers that are still working on this....All the give me root and where's the root and other I want root spamming is not going to help with anything other than the continuous spamming of this section.
I really hate this waiting for the Unlockers/Root for any phone as it's nothing but spamming.
Just be patient and it will come. Then it's time for you to show your gratification to the developers for their hardwork that I'm sure most do in their spare time and not as their source of income...

For those who haven't been watching the Bounty thread, it's been confirmed that the Turbo has indeed been rooted by maiko1, see here and here for proof in videos. Also, jcase has confirmed that it is legit here.
I'll keep this thread up to date as more info becomes available, but it seems like the wait could finally be over! Can't say anything yet as to if or when the method will be released, but this is definitely great news!
Edit 3/13: jcase has stated that sunshine will not work on the Turbo even when root is released.. Yet. We can hope, but as of right now the bootloader will remain locked.
Edit 3/17: multiple developers have stated that *IF* the turbo gets a BL unlock, they will work on porting Cyanogenmod to it.
Edit 3/18: maiko1 has indicated that "final stages of testing have begun" for the root method.
Edit 3/25: the root method is supposedly going to be out later today! See here where it is confirmed last night for a release today.
EDIT 3/25: ROOT IS LIVE! Get it while it's hot!
Sweet, this is good news. Don't have a Turbo but this may be the deciding factor.
Wow, made my night. But I'll take the wait and see approach for now, video's look good and remarks from trusted members, call me doubting Thomas but I'll wait to really dance around when the instructions and files are available. Ok,I lied I'm dancing now!!!

Now that is an extremely difficult thing to ponder. I've been wanting Lollipop on this phone really bad, but with root I could actually figure out what's keeping my phone awake and do Titanium backups! Aaaah, I'll probably choose root.
Will the limitation on most G4 models (unrootable, locked) forever burden the independent development scene?
I wanna buy the rootable international version but I'm afraid that the limitations on other models would mean less development (less LG4 custom roms/kernel/etc to choose from).
Is this just a minor issue until someone finds a method to unlock all phones? It's literally the only reason I didn't buy it yesterday.
Patience. Root will come. Any dev who wants a $2000+ payday will figure it out soon enough, according to 1 sizeable bounty on XDA...
The phone is great without root anyway...I too desperately miss some features on the unrootable dual SIM G4, but no way near enough to stop me getting it now before root. I'd be posting this in the root thread/s, there's plenty of them...

That was a bit silly... all dev XDA phones (G4) are rooted. They need to develop a safe and efficient alternative for end users without the potential for bricking which is why it's not released yet, so technically "we have root", but it's just not released/widespread yet. Check the other G4 boards - one of the main contributors, Autoprime, confirms my comments above. But... if you can't wait, you can't wait...

Do't worry guys, for Root is on its way. It might take a little bit of time, but it is better to wait and get a safe root method rather than end up with a bricked device.
Just remember, our Devs are people too, they have real life issues, goals, and plans, So it IS NOT like they can just sit at their computer 24/7 until they get everything wrapped up in a nice little package for you.
I just got my Moto X Pure Edition (THIS one) and I really want to root it and get all the things I had with my G3 and back when I had an JB'd iPhone 4s, but my experience with the G3 was terrible.
I ended up having to RMA it 4 times through my insurance because there was something I was using on the G3 that slowed it to a vista-esque pace, and despite lots of reading on this site and others I managed to brick it :silly: 4 times :silly: in 4 different ways just trying to put it back to stock. It cost me far too much money but I was stupid enough to keep trying before finally settling on stock to avoid more issues.
I love this new phone, but I know I could tweak it more to what I like and from what it looks like in Heisenberg's Guide it is fairly safe and simple as far as roots go. I feel so stupid having screwed up with the LG that I don't want to try it. I'm a CS major and I've spent so much time messing with all sorts of things I never thought it would be a problem.
So my question is, within the realm of using Xposed and a few root apps/functions (no custom ROMs or anything just because I can't afford not having a phone for a week if I ruin it again), is it relatively safe to root the X Pure and are these tools (Universal Tool, Restore to stock tool) or a manual set of steps a good bet for returning to stock and removing root? I just want to make sure if I end up over my head I can get back to stock and be happy with what is already a great phone. Sorry if I sound like a huge _____ but I'm still in school and I want to avoid further grief as best I can.
From what I've been hearing, the 808 is a tricky processor... Besides xposed and regular terminal code changes, such as screen density, you should be good. Although, if your going in and messing with code idk what to say, experienced devs are even having a tough time getting this thing to boot on their custom ROMs...
You probably shouldn't mess with your phones anymore.

Another thing just to keep in mind when talking people about your qualifications, saying you are getting your Computer Science degree is pretty broad. First, we don't know what year you're in and second we don't know your concentration. I have a BBA for instance. A BBA in what though? If I went applying to random jobs, or trying to network that would leave more questions than answers. What do I have a BBA in? Well mine is in Management, so yes I can do basic accounting, financing, marketing, but my concentration is being able to interpret financial data and making decisions that would benefit a company or organization. Does that make me advanced enough to be an accountant, even though we both have BBAs? Hell no! Same goes for CS. You may be getting your computer science degree, but are you majoring in Network Security, Hardware, C++, Java, Oracle, etc... There is so much information missing that just stating "I'm getting my CS degree" isn't enough for anyone to give you a solid answer, especially not knowing what year you are in. If you are a junior, then you've just barely scratched the surface of what you will be studying for the next 2 years. Just a little FYI for future sakes

I own Oneplus One and rooted immediately with blisspop rom. I can't use phn without root access coz almost all ma apps need root permission. Yes its risky to root a costly device but if u need it so desperately den u should definitely root it....
Again, thanks for the positive input. I bricked them following the stock flashing methods on this website, I wasn't just shooting in the dark. And out of another half dozen phones I've only ever had an issue with the G3. Can you not? I'd like to learn here, not argue.
U having plm installing recovery on ur g3???
When it comes to just simply rooting and installing xposed, I don't see how you can brick it following step by step instructions. I will say this. If you brick it and you can't figure out how to get it back to stock, Motorola has made it clear you're on your own. So there's that, but using a simple toolkit can make a worlds difference in preventing mistakes. Yes, you'll feel like an amateur, and let's be honest, you are right now, but it beats losing $400.
You also just got it and you have no idea if you have any hardware issues that many have had to RMA within the first week for. So maybe sitting on it for a week or 2 couldn't hurt to eliminate that possibility as well (Bad CPU/GPU, Speaker, Light Leakage, loose parts when shaken, excess battery drain/heat, and turbo charge randomly not working, etc.). Motorola/Lenovo were at first being lenient about replacing these even with unlocked bootloaders and even giving people a month to send these back, they are wising up and change the rules since people have been making such a big fuss about the bootloader thing, and posting about the one month holding time (now I've read recently it's 3 days?), so just be careful, that's all.

Sounds like a solid plan. With the G3 rooting was always easy but the only known way that I had found for the t mobile model was to use the LG flashing tool that looked a lot like the one they used in-house to restore it, and despite following a pretty straightforward guide there were 3 different errors I got right towards the end of the process that would lock the phone in a download mode state. After using TWRP to get it back to being usable I'd still be stuck with root, and trying a few other ways would screw me.
As far as using the tools, are the 2 I linked in the OP the proper ones to be using? I'll definitely hold off on it for a while to make sure nothing comes up, thanks for that info. I'm guessing the 2 year protection plan is moot if I'm stuck with no way to erase evidence of a software issue arising from root, so that's a thing to think about as well. Do you know if unlocking the bootloader voids that protection plan? I'm looking for the TOS.

I could not have said this any better.
Judging from the attitudes of you two it's a wonder I stopped using this forum. Thanks fellas, really shows the quality of the community here.
I have always rooted my phones from my original HTC incredible, galaxy nexus, HTC DNA, and HTC ONE M8... that being said I am very familiar with HTC and how they work and I always had the HTC RUU file ready in case of emergency but never had to use it. I'm not sure if Motorola has a RUU file or a Fastboot IMG like Nexus devices that can bring your phone back from the dead as this is my first Moto because I never wanted to deal with the encrypted bootloader on the VZW moto phones.
I honestly can say that I have been finding root less and less needed since my M8 and I dont think I will unlock or root my Pure Edition.
The reason is that there is no bloat that I cant get rid of, I see no need for a custom kernel since the newer processors are really fast, it basically runs stock android so its not bogged down by Sense or touchwiz.
I honestly can say I like the minor additions Moto has made with the Pure Edition... I have used exposed and I really dont see the use for most of its functions for more than a week before its just gimmicky.
Once updates are stopped or the Development community is way ahead of OTA updates we will still have an easy OEM process to unlock root and flash. But for now I'm sticking with what I paid for... The Moto experience

If you follow step by step instruction you will be ok.... I have rooted tons of phones and bricked a couple but was able to fix them. Its a chance you take but hey if you mess up it is a excuse to get a new cell lol. But honestly your streak with rooting is bad, maybe you shouldn't try anymore.

Judging from the attitudes of you two it's a wonder I stopped using this forum. Thanks fellas, really shows the quality of the community here.

I'm sorry I offended you. Based on your history I think it a bad idea for you to mess with your phone. Not what you wanted to hear but I honestly think it's the truth. Not all computer science majors can handle phone tech. How many of your classmates have iPhones? How many of them with Android phones root?

Come on, don't pigeon hole everyone on XDA. You had to have known you were going to receive some sarcastic replies. That's like Plaxico Burress asking what kind of gun he should buy next. The consensus here seems to be genuine. You shouldn't mess with root anymore but it's your money. Thing is, rooting is not hard and not dangerous if you follow directions closely, yet you've managed to brick several devices. I rooted my phone to install Xposed but due to battery issues I have stopped using it. Look in the Xposed thread for more info. I would say just wait, its not worth it now IMO.
IMO, the only reason to root is to install AdAway.
Can't stand Ads. But other than that, the experience that Motorola has set up for us is perfect. I won't be adding anything else like Xposed, or install a custom ROM until I get bored with my phone, which will probably be in another six months. I've set myself up with an unlocked bootloader and root for when the time comes though. But for now, I'm happy.
I gotta say that to me (sophmore in college as a Biology major, completely unrelated to compsci), it seems pretty hard to brick a phone just trying to root it. Especially with the very detailed guides that Hesisenberg has set up for us, thank that man.
You gotta decide if what you plan on doing with your root is worth it though. I spent about 1.5 hours rooting my phone, and I'm not even sure that the time was worth AdAway.
Anyone have root for droid turbo 2 verizon 7.0 yet. I'm looking for way because I want to get root to do a lot of stuff I need for my phone.
Use magisk su
The Droid Turbo 2 is still bootloader locked, until someone cracks that, it's not gonna be rooted.

There's a few threads where people were trying to raise a bounty for it, not sure if it's being actively worked due to the lack of dev attention for this model.

Apparently the Sunshine team that finally cracked the Droid Turbo has had no luck finding an exploit on this phone. It's gonna come down to giving one to someone who can crack it and pay them if they want money... If you really need root, at this point it would be easier to buy an X-Force, you can get the unlock code from Motorola. Verizon is not letting them hand out codes for the Droid Turbo 2.
There's a few root threads to read over, no one has gotten close to cracking the bootloader yet, until that happens, perm root is not achievable on this phone.
Has anyone gone for the bounty yet cuz I have been waiting for awhile now, I'm considering getting an iPhone or something

Good luck rooting that iPhone.
There's plenty of phones better than iPhone, and which can be rooted. You just bought the wrong phone. You should stay away from any Verizon phones in general, if rooting is important to you. Or at least make sure there's an exploit (like with Droid Turbo) before buying.
Why is there an option for "unlocking bootloader" in developer's options for Droid Turbo 2?
Never understood why Verizon will leave this option on the phone but can't unlock it?

It's an option in all Lollipoo and newer Android OS. Verizon makes sure it doesn't actually do anything.

Sorry it was a force not maxx. II ask because I recently helped my buddy get past his. if you are following you tube videos and you are stuck at copying and sharing a text to Google maps so you can get to the internet I would suggest that you copy and share a picture instead out of your file manager. I was able to get net and then ask Google for chrome and viola
