I recently received my Nexus 4 phone and went with a T-Mobile no contract plan. I noticed that I am only getting 2g service. Next to my connectivity bars it shows a G. My data reception is very slow. Is there a way to get faster data speeds by tweaking some settings or am I stuck with the slow 2G speeds? Where I live I am limited to Verizon or us cellular. In order to get a no contract with one of these companies I would have had to get one of their no contract phones. Had to travel about an hour to get to T-Mobile store. Is AT&T any better? Thanks.

Do you live in an area with T-Mobile 4g coverage? If not, you are borked. If you should have 4g coverage, make sure your APN settings are all entered correctly. They have to be exactly right.

After doing some research I believe the data service is only going to be 2G. What a bummer! Such a great phone and I can't use it to it's full potential. Only had it a week and looks like I'm going to have to get rid of it already. Thanks for the the info. Guess I'll have to go back to the money sucking Verizon.

Sounds like you are out in the boonies so chances are tmo is not a good choice for you (ATT is probably lousy too) you don't necessarily have to go back to verizon proper though, pageplus is a viable option and could be much cheaper ($55/mo for unl talk/text + 1gb data) depending on your usage. You won't be able to use the n4 on pageplus but you could always "downgrade" to a galaxy nexus.
edit - Looks like pageplus has some updated plans, the $55 plan now has 2gb of data and they've added a $70 plan that has 5gb of data.
I don't really live in the boonies, but where I live there is basically verizon or us cellular to choose from. Can not use the nexus4 on their networks because they do not support the nexus 4 technology. I only get 2G with t mobile or att and the data speed is horrible. Believe I will be looking for a galaxy nexus 4g phone. At least I can use that on verizons network. Again, thanks for your info.
I received my Nexus 4 form T mobile and didn't really buy in to the whole death grip issue but noticed the cell antenna signal was really jumpy - i first thought it was software related. In my area i have my ime attached to my optimum wifi to pickup a signal which is heavily available on long island, ny. Switching form the iphone and sprint which i always put 3rd behind verizon, att. I assumed t mobile would be an issue but did not expect the poor coverage i got. The iphone on sprint never showed no signal, i actually cant remember one time with my evo 4g, nexus 3, iphone 4, 4s and 5 where i was anywhere saying dam no signal or dropped call while on sprint. tmobile on the nexus 4 would show an empty triangle as soon as i walked inside a building and was non existent in my home. I assumed software because with wifi off it would hold a signal longer, I'm ok with it dropping cell data on wifi and even tried to not use wifi on weak signal but still had issues.
The phone never went to edge, which i would have been ok with becasue it meant i could make a call, nothign worse than no signal at all. my friend had tmobile sg3 and in my house it would auto switch to full edge in my house, my nexus would show one H bar and then go empty until i switched to 2g or turned off wifie to kill my battery while struggling for one H bar.
I actually got tmobile to drop my contract becasue they could not supply a signal boost. i went to straight talk att sim and had issues, better but still issues. Moved on to gophone, while gophone att is the best signal i noticed since getting the phone i have an open support case with LG to send it in and but am waiting until i have my new nexus 4 form google play which is coming monday. I plan to test the new one, non tmobile while i send in the tmobile one to LG and will resell the LG resend if all goes well. im hoping i received a lemon and all my signal issues go away but have been really frustrated to date.
Especially with APN and prepaid settings, at least straightalk att sim had settigns included, the att gogphone is really secredt about what to give me, multiple reps give different info and advise i need different gophone plans.
Its killing the nexus 4, i even tried the t mobile $60 or $65 plan and could not get a signal in my home or get it to switch to 2g automatically.
Some are saying they cannot use data while on a voice call, yet some claim they can. The official VZW response is supposedly that it won't happen until the Advanced Calling 1.0 update "by the end of the year".
Would those of you with one in hand please confirm if this is different depending on which network type you are on. i.e. 3G, 4G LTE, or 4G XLTE?
I was ready to pick one up until I saw this since this is a very important ability for me. It's like it is 2008 all over. I'm pretty shocked they would release a device "temporarily" with less ability than the previous generation.
Thanks
No you can not
We'll have to wait just like the Moto X.
The Sony Z3v also can not do Simultaneous Voice+Data .
I wonder if the Nexus 6 will also have this issue?
Is this just 3G and data? I'm not understanding why u can't use 4G and talk at the same time.

From what I've read, the Moto X (2014) and the Droid Turbo share the antenna for the 3G and 4G radios opposed to previous generations to cut production costs. Older phones would use 3G to talk and 4G was used for data I believe. If you set an older 4G phone to LTE only, you couldn't make a phone call, but could surf the net. Until they update the software that administers VoLTE to handle data at the same time, we are stuck back in 2010.
You can't talk and use data at the same time, unless you are in a VoLTE market.
Ugh. My OG Moto X can do this. Think I'll just wait to get this until the VoLTE update.

Wow...that is terrible. How do you launch a phone in Oct 2014 without a key function from 3 years ago???
So this mean I won't be able to use my navigation (Google maps / Waze) while talking on the phone?
Actually you can use voice and data at the same time... When using an AT&T sim card
It is only on 3G but will do voice and data. Until VoLTE for VZW this just won't happen.
Just to confirm. Few phones can do EVDO and 1XRTT Voice simultaneously (Rezound, Thunderbolt, S3(I think)), but every Verizon 4G phone to date that I am aware of can use LTE and 1XRTT simultaneously. It would be ridiculous to drop LTE when making a phone call!
Please tell me this thing can use LTE on a phone call.
No. There is no simultaneous voice+data. Unless you're connected to an active WiFi.

Nope. When on LTE, I made a phone call and the data went to grayed out 1x.

Isn't it where both phones need to be Verizon VOLTE enabled and both parties need to be in Verizon VOLTE markets?
So lets say when the Droid Turbo gets VOLTE... can I talk & surf at the same time while calling my sister who is on AT&T? Or am I screwed unless she gets on Verizon and her area allows VOLTE?
I find this hard to believe.
Does this impact users outside US (and hence not on VZ network)?
I'm going to shoot myself. I cant believe I didnt check on this before ordering. Every phone I've had in the last few years starting with my old Thunderbolt could do simultanious voice/data using the different bands. I thought the issue was basically limited iphones.
They better enable the VoLTE and fast. I cant go too long without it. May have to return the phone and re-order once its been enabled. Its too important a feature for my daily business needs.
Yeah this is a key feature where I'm like WTF. Im gonna hold off for a bit and see what happens and pray the Nexus 6 won't be like this since its a phone that is designed to run on all carriers.

If the Moto X and DROID Turbo are like this, I bet the Nexus 6 will be as well, they are all very similar.
Well i was thinking that to but being that the nexus is a one device for all carriers unlike moto x and turbo i wondered if that antenna would be made the same.
Stolen from the comments on a long Droid Life thread about this exact thing:
Moto X 2nd Gen does not do voice/data. Z3v does not. Droid Turbo does not.
These can do LTE data and voice: DNA, Moto X (2013), S4, G2, One M8, S5, G3, Note 4. (and most other phones pre August 2014.)
Nexus 6: Don't know yet but not looking great.
Once VoLTE is enabled, how does it work? Will I be able to get voice and data with anyone as long as I am on LTE? Will it be limited to only other Verizon customers who also have VoLTE enabled? if it is the later, I need to convince a manger to let me return this phone, ie, it was a mistake to switch from the Note 4 if true.
I used to be able to use data while on a call using Sprint on my Moto X 2013 but on my MXPE, the "LTE" symbol goes away as soon as I connect a call.
Is this supposed to happen or is there a setting I need to change? Is this Sprint only??
Thanks!
bump
So you bump this and then make another thread?
The 2013 Sprint Moto X had a separate 4G LTE modem (as did most Sprint LTE phones of that era), so as long as you were in LTE coverage, you could be on a call and have an active data session (SVLTE).
This has been the case for many years now. A good read-up is here... http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1/...-due-to-circuit-switched-fallback-technology/
I have Moto X Pure Edition with Sprint sim card. It working on Sprint network and better network signal than my Samsung phone. I used to change PRL to Verizon in forced roam on my S2. Anyone know how to flash modified PRL on Moto X Pure Edition?
Thanks.
Even I tried to look everywhere. Including nexus 6, 5x 6p. I have no luck to find information. Anyone know how to change prl? Thanks
Have you tried calling Sprint? My mom used an airave through Sprint and her phone has to use a certain prl to communicate with the airave. They pushed the prl to her phone and said don't update prl or will lose connection with airave.
Bump. Looking for info on this as well. I can get qpst to see the phone but it does not connect.
I have successfully flashed prl but it doesn't stick. I see other devices (m9 and g4) have the same issue. Looks like Sprint finally locked it down.
If anyone has any leads on how to make this work please pm or post.
Hello,
I bought the unlocked Moto G4 from best buy last week to use with ATT. I started the phone initially without any sim card in it. Next time i restarted i put in the sim card and it detected as att sim card and everything seems to work until when I notice that when i am in my office building I only see H and not 4G LTE. I had Nokia 640 earlier which was ATT go phone and i was getting 4G LTE on it in my office building. And I have also got LTE earlier on other phone in same building. I checked the APN settings and they looked ok since I am getting 4G LTE at most of the places. chatted/talked to ATT and they are of no help, they are saying that since its not ATT and unlocked phone, there is no guarantee that you will get lte everywhere and may be the antenna could be weak on the phone. But I am just not sure if I got a faulty piece or what. Since even the lower end lumia 640 was giving me lte in my office building. I am not sure if I should just return and get another piece or just return it for this issue.
Any help is much appreciated..
There are several good apps on Play that show you cell signal strengths and such. Do a search in Play for "cell signal info" and try one of those apps. It will at least give you a place to start and a comparison tool to compare phones.

I own a G3 and a Moto X Pure, I am on AT&T and have noticed the past few days LTE seems very... umm, weak I guess... at least in the Minneapolis/St Paul area, and my phone was falling back to HSPA+ way more often than "normal" this week (I travel here every week). I thought I was crazy but maybe there is more too it than that. I do know that AT&T has been doing lots of upgrades recently and rolling out LTE-A, or at least some kind of LTE upgrade, in some areas. Back home my LTE speeds consistenyl went from 20Mbps to 70Mbps down and 5Mbps to 25Mbps up in the last couple of weeks.
Best thing to do would be get a signal strength app, like LTE Discovery or Network Signal Info, and compare it to another phone on the same carrier in the same area and band (LTE Discovery will tell you the LTE Band you are using). Remember that not all phones report it the same, it can be wildly different, but it might give you some insight.
My point is, it may not be your hardware... and Moto's in general are known for really good signal reception. Just do some due diligence before returning it, but if you feel it is hardware, but all means exchange it.
thanks guys..will try it out..
Maybe I am being paranoid, but sometimes I wonder if cell carriers some how optimize their LTE signal to work better with their own phones. I have noticed this on T-Mobile when I always seem to get a stronger signal with a T-Mobile branded phone than with a third party unlocked device.

LOL... No, carriers have the ROM modified to make the icon show more bars on their subsidized phones. They can't actually throttle 3rd party phones on the same plan as a carrier branded ones, legally at least.

That's what I thought., although I still wonder why I usually get a better LTE signal with T-Mobile branded phones. This seems to be especially noticeable since I have upgraded to Marshmallow. Recently, I have or have owned a T-Mobile LG G4, an LG G3, an Axon Pro, and a Moto X Pure. As a rule I have noticed the signal strength being stronger on the T-Mobile branded phones.

Actual signal strength or the icon? LTE Discovery usually shows the truth...
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
This is based on readings from LTE Discovery, not the number of bars the phone is displaying. I suppose you could also come to the conclusion that LG phones have a stronger radio signal than other phones.
I'm having the same problem with both of my g4's in my area and seattle international airport... if it's not working there... then where will it work?

Yeah well I ended up keeping the phone. Someone else in the same building also reported lower quality signal with even Iphone and moto g4, all other areas we are getting lte so guess, i took my chances.
