Recently bought an S4 I9505 and was testing out its IR blaster and it seems to have a very short range i.e hardly 3 ft for me, I tested it out with both samsung LG TVs and it also needs to be angled directly infront of the power buttons of the TV (which is where the receiver is located I gusss) to function. Why is that so cause my friend also has an s4 and it had a pretty good range of about 6-8 ft
P.S checked for any protective sheets on the blaster but didnt found any and I have tried with both Anymote universal app and peel remote app if it helps
Thanks in advance
Maybe there's dirt on the IR blaster or under the IR blaster glass.

Your problem doesn't appear to be software related. And, unless you want to go about flashing a bunch of ROMs to see if the blaster will somehow start working properly, I guess cleaning the blaster lens is the best solution.
If dirt can get under the glass and into the proximity sensor, then why can't that happen to the IR blaster? After all, the phone is not airtight, it's not even waterproof.
but still it shouldn't be dirty in a new set should it?
And are you sure it isn't software related?

You did not mention it was new. But even so, it might not be completely new. I think Samsung stopped producing the S4, so any "new" S4 you might find are refurbished most probably.
You can go about changing ROMs if you're really keen on it.
I opened it and cleaned it (didnt seemed to be much of dirt though) and still very short range.
P.S It's not refurbished
P.S I read on some forums that some people also had a troubling IR blaster after rooting the phone, are there any odds for it as I have also rooted it

'Sup XDA. I've been dying to get induction charging on my Nexus S since I got a Touchpad. Even found someone who did it over at androidcentral. Have all the parts.
I know full well that I am completely responsible for any screw-up I happen to do.
Now that that's out of the way, I just need to figure out which pins to solder to. HERE is the teardown and just wanted pointed out which pins I should take the soldering iron to. Any help appreciated.

wish I would have kept the back from my palm pre, I do still have a couple touchstones though. Might be cool to put an NFC tag in the touchstone to launch the dock mode. Might do this if I am feeling adventurous one day.

Can you just program any passive tag for that? Should just be a step of sticking it on right?
Wow, this looks awesome.
But if I understood correctly the problem, the NFC antenna must always remain between the inductive antenna and the battery. I haven't tried, but it seems that the NFC antenna can be simply removed. Wouldn't the inductive antenna fit between the NFC antenna and the case? That way it would all fit inside, leaving the awesome exterior untouched.

There's a risk that the antenna would have 5V running through it and consequently through the NFC radio/parts, etc. if you keep the coil inside the case behind the NFC tag.

I think so. I havn't messed around with an NFC task launcher, but I remember reading a thread where people were using an NFC tag to launch car mode when placed into a car dock. Should just need to buy a tag and set it up with an NFC launcher.
I am using my GS4 running armband with my G2, it fits well actually but there is one MAJOR issue. The phone will NOT wakeup when double tapping the screen. It will however turn off when double tapping the status bar. Has anyone else gone running with their G2? If so how has it worked out and what armband are you using?
Be sure the proximity sensor isnt covered, if this is covered it doesnt listen, probably to prevent from turning on in your pocket.

KnockOn is also affected by the orientation of the phone. If it doesn't detect that it is in an appropriate orientation for typical phone use it will ignore the KnockOn feature.

I have tested that, it turns on at all angles and even upside down. I don't think that is very accurate, even if LG advertises that. I am guessing my arm band is too thick.

Just got my international version yesterday and was really bummed to discover the same issue this morning.
It definitely has sonething to do with the proximity/light sensor next to the LED getting thrown off my the plastic of the armband view area.
I experimented by pressing the plastic flat against the phone and it then worked. Obviously not practical to try and do while running, but its a start. I imagine that, while not ideal, cutting a section from the armband window may help
Will post if I find something else
I bought the official flip case. It has a magnet in the front. Unfortunately Moto have used a rather powerful neodinium magnet. So, your phones magnetometer will follow the edge of the case around rather than true north!!!! This doesn't matter for gps navigation, but for on foot travel, and any augmented reality apps that use the compass this case will make the behave oddly.
I don't know what the long term effect on the phones compass will be, but I don't expect it to be good.
In addition, but for me I think it is a small risk, this magnet will be capable of damaging some computer storage mediums and possibly, wiping swipe card data...
I have no idea why they chose to use such an aggressive magnet. I can hang the phone from a metal bar with it, no problem.
Just thought I would share....

Yes sir, you should that. It is ridiculous to make such design mistake on an official case. I was about to buy one but after reading your story I am not sure anymore. Keep us posted.
Btw; you can contact Motorola via their official app Moto Care.
Glad to know, that I am not the only one who is concerned about that magnet. By the way there are two magnets. A weak one to trigger the screen on/off and a strong magnet to keep the case closed.
After removing the strong magnet you will be able to use the compass with the cover flipped to the backside.

Edit: The strong magnet was on the lower third, where the cut is visible.

spoke to moto care. sent them screen shots of the magnetometer all messed up. They said they will get back to me, but no one else has reported issues... *cough* bull**** *cough...
I have noticed today that even when I remove the case, the magnetic sensor is all messed up. It seems after a week of use it has screwed up the sensors calibration (probably correctable)..
evidently, part of the cheap price is a lack of proper beta testing of the phone and accessories....

With GPS Status from Play Store you can force recalibration.
.
I can also confirm this. I have a white flip case but stopped using it after a week as it got in the way. I just put it back on and sure enough my compass was exhibiting the same issue. How did they miss this?

there is a small metal square on the inside of the flip cases backcase. I 'think' this is intended to shield the sensor from the magnet when the case is open. It clearly is TOTALLY inadequate to the task. I'm speculating this is what the metal square is for, as it corresponds in position exactly with one of the magnets in the case door, and this metal square is not present on the normal back case..
Simply lazy design and testing... why does it even need a magnet to stay closed :/ its like closing a book with a magnet lol, they get along fine without them!!!!

Thank you for contacting Motorola.
We regret that there is no possible solution. Compasses operate by magnetic field, and any interference with any compass magnet. There is no way around this.
If you are using a Motorola original case, rest assured that will not hurt your terminal. Imam to close the lid affects the compass but not strong enough to damage the terminal or delete any internal memory power. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I don't understand, are you saying you work for motorola? was this a response you got from motorola??
Motorola cannot release an OFFICIAL ACCESSORY!! at a premium price (£20) that causes issues for the core functionality of the device. I will press the issue with motorola until they acknowledge their mistake and resolve to provide me with a refund, equivalent compensation or a replacement back cover that doesn't cause these problems.
Imagine if you bought a New car; You bought official seat covers for your car that the manufacturer heavily marketed to you, but they make the satnav useless. Do you think any car manufacturer would ever get away with this??

As long as the flip shell is folded completely over (so it is flush with the back) my wife's compass works flawlessly. It's actually better than my n4. As I only have one sample to go off of I'm not saying this issue is being over hyped but it isn't always an issue

I've tried it this way. If you fold it completely flat, and line it up to the millemeter, the compass works about 50% well. It generally adjusts to north, but it flicks back and forth between north and where the magnet is on the case. You can also see the gauss meter jumping around a lot.
I suspect the magnetic power of the magnets in the case vary a large amount they wont be very expensive ones after all..
Hello, I have an i9505. I wasn't using my cover at the time and the camera somehow got smashed. I bought this as a replacement:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331086554473?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
It worked but was faulty (it had artefacts on photos and videos) so I asked for a replacement and he sent one. It had even more artefacts, I'm almost certain he's selling used parts as new but that's another issue.
Anyway, it's tough to find an i9505 camera at a reasonable price. But would this do?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/3009...ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=95&ff19=0
Thank you!

Also, I read that the i9500 sensor is better than the i9505 sensor anyway.

The cover is really, really annoying. Especially for me, who uses bluetooth through my car speakers for my main music stuff. So each time I get in the car I plug the phone into the 12 volt. And each time, I have to pry open that cover. The worst part is, it doesn't even stay open! I also just got my Incipio dual layer protection case in the mail and now its even harder to get the charging cover off. It's really aggravating. I don't even think it closes correctly either. It always looks like its not snapped down all the way. Just, bleh. Most annoying quirk on the 4 Samsung phones I've owned.
just get the spare battery charge kit so you never have to mess with it. Its also a better means of going from zero to 100 than wireless charger

Yeah I'm not really sure what to do here. I have a bunch of 3D models for phone docks / car docks / etc for the gs3 and gs4, the battery cover is a total nuisance on the gs5, especially because it doesn't really stay open after you open it (I'm trying to imagine how to go about designing a dock for this thing).
I do 3D modeling and have a 3D printer, if anyone has an idea for an improvement... holler. I doubt we'll see any kind of other 3rd party replacement otherwise as it's attached to the phone and clearly involved with waterproofing. not sure if it's worth the trade-off!
anywho guess I'll be giving wireless charging a try again...

Yeah definitely good that it's easy to do that - personally I'm not really upset or frustrated; it's awesome to add waterproofing - I'm just trying to puzzle out the best way to keep the feature while also making the phone easy to slide into a dock (preferably with one hand), you know?
