So I took a big leap and rooted my tablet this morning. I've installed Titanium Backup and GMD Gesture, and also AdAway and AppQuarantine. What other great things can I do? I love trying new things. Any suggestions from you experts? I would be very grateful!

Download and do either of the following for a full backup...
the best way to do a complete and full backup of your device.. There are two methods
1 most common
download ROM MANAGER
you can from in this app install a custom recovery on your device..
Boot into the custom recovery and do a full anand backup. you can also flash other custom roms (custom android os)
2 what i use..
download goo manager beta from play store
in go manager click menu at top choose install open source recovery . follow prompts . It will download and install
same as step one you can boot into recovery from goo manager Its big botton fully touch base . And you can backup and restore as well as flash custom roms...
NOW WITH THE ABOVE SAID PLEASE READ thru the forums related to roms rom manager Custom recoveries .. and so on .. this will save you some troubles later .. anything you need to know or not understand Just ask We are here to help.
Cool, thanks! Could you point me to the best place for explanations about roms? XDA is huge and I am not sure where to look... Cheers!

And then eventually, try out some custom kernels. Although be warned, you may discover a new hobby and become a crack flasher
I usually don't keep any one ROM and kernel on my tablet for more then a week (average is 2 days). I'm trying to resist flashing PARANOIDANDROID 1.992 since I heard 2.0 is around the corner.. not sure how long I can hold out though

Edit: some (though not all) of these inverted apps work, if you swing that way. Once again, they were made for the GN

To find roms on xda
Xda is a very organized web site for the most part finding them is easy. deciding which one is not so much
rom actually means read only memory.. But we will skip the tech stuff for now..
Here on the device development forums Rom is referred to mostly as a custom built Operating system for your device .
these can be built by one person or a team of developers . Most have tweaks and customization's a bit above and beyond the stock experience. ITS BEST before flashing any new rom is to into the forum thread of the rom read developer info and the comments made on the thread. Many roms have experimental software apps and tweaks.. Not all roms are perfectly stable..SO FINDING one that has what you are looking for is just a matter of reading and trial and error.
Most roms. well all you see anymore Come with a kernel. (The linux part of android .. Kinda whats under the hood) . Be sure to pay attention to this and the information. Some add features some over clock .
we have here for the n7 several types of roms .
original development .. these are based on the custom operating system pushed by google
custom based on the above but often has alot more customization's and kernel tweaks More likely to have buggs . but often faster and take up less storage space on device.. as well as having a personal twist for the developer on apps installed customization's and themes
I never give advice on what to use just go in the development section and start reading .
Be sure before you flash anything on your tablet know what it is and how to get out of it Back to stock and Have your backups backed up...
ALWAYS HAVE A WAY OUT FIRST..
Good Luck
So I am now on Paranoid Android, trying out the different Workspaces. Thanks for the help!
But I don't understand what Paranoid Android does. What does "This rom lets you scale and project every app, every widget, even systemcomponents individually" mean in every day language?
Also, could someone explain where, in tablet mode, the three dots are for the settings of many apps. They seem to be covered by the status bar. How does one access them? Would be grateful for help as I really like the small tablet mode.
Listen, I can read fine and understand instruction.
the phone is rooted but each time I try to install a ROM it gives me a new error, the last one was library cannot found.
I tried about 10 different roms from here, each failed. Either its stuck on boot screen or doesnt let me pass boot menu no matter what.
I guess I got the devils phone.
Any suggestions?
I don't know why your phone is crazy, but maybe flashing the SBF again will help?

Which SBF? the rom's? I tried, same BS everytime.
I just use this ****ty looking 2.3.6 I just want the phone to look nicer cuz I hate that too-androidish look.
And a nice smooth scrolling in the menu will be nice aswell.
i'm really sorry to ask and i dont mean to offend you but we need a starting point:
- did you try to install zip via stock recovery perhaps
- did you install 2ndinit?
- defy or defy+?
- did you wipe/factory reset before flashong the zip?
- do you maybe have bl7 kernel?
actually, sounds really bad but hopefully there is a way for you!
Please list the exact steps you followed to root and get a recovery and also mention what you did in recovery.. don't worry, we will help you as much as we can
And also list some of the roms you tried flashing..

Yes
I have 2.3.6 I'm not sure what BL7 is
I'm not a pro. But first I'd like you to
- install 2ndinit again
- reboot and press Vol-Down when the blue light appears
- use custom recovery do install your preferred custom ROM. (only use the ones for defy+)
you can NOT install custom roms from stock recovery!

Should I install a specific version of 2ndinit Defy? Can you give me the program, I'm confused what to download.
What do you mean stock recovery?
And another Q: If I was to successfully flash a rom, should I use GB or flash to JB?
stock recovery = shut down > power + vol-down
custom recovery = reboot > vol-down when blue light
no specific 2ndinit. just use the one that is mentioned in FAQ or howto install...
or here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212
If you don't know the difference between stock and custom recovery you might want to start reading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982

I have a few more Q:
Do I need to upgrade my phone to 4.1.2 before flashing a ROM that is 4.1.2 or will that be the upgrade?
Which ROM do you suggest for me use because I am not very decisive about it.
What do I need to do for this ROM to work for me? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
I have GB 3.2.6 rooted with DFP 231
1. no. there is no official 4.1.2 for defy.
2. i would recommend cm7.
use a version that is for the defyplus and you dont have anything to prepare more than you will find in the howto's.

Listen to this. It is not Motorola's fault that you have soft bricked your device. It is entirely your fault. Hundreds of other guys have successfully flashed their device with the ROM of their choice and are having no problems. Maybe you should read threads before trying to flash ROMs. If you do not know the basics of rooting and modding android, you should not attempt to do it. And if you have flashed your device without doing the neccessary homework, please do not expect help from the community. Please educate yourself to the required level before attempting to do such things. There are several well written and comprehensive guides and tutorials on the cyanogen wiki as well as here on xda which can answer all your questions for sure. For your own sake, please read them. Your posts in this thread highlight your severe lack of rudimentary knowledge about android. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, because everyone was like that at some point. BUT, we read and we read and if we didn't understand, we read some more!
Please understand that this is a community where we cannot help you if you do not help yourself. I'm sorry to to tell you this, but you are being a jerk by criticising Moto and whining that things aren't working when it is you who has done things in the incorrect manner. So stop being a n00b, stop whining, go read some threads ( ALL THE STICKY ONES, MINIMUM ! AS WELL AS THE ONES ON THE CYANOGENMOD WIKI ! ) and educate yourself. Just because your friend has modded his device does not mean that you can too.It requires a certain level of expertise which can be easily gained, provided that you are ready to be an eager learner. Remember this, TO GET GOOD REPLIES, YOU HAVE TO ASK GOOD QUESTIONS.
Get rid of the attitude, --- learn the basics --- and then come back. If you are still having a genuine problem, then we will help you.
PS: You mentioned that you are going to flash using RSD lite. PLEASE flash the appropriate SBF file. If you flash the wrong SBF, it can lead to some serious problems. Choose wisely. And if you make ****s in that too, please do not start a new thread, refer to the pre-existing help threads. Good luck.
And please do not ask for the links to the above mentioned threads, use the search function and your common sense.

I've read well over 30 topics here ENTIRELY and none helped, I've done everything according to the guides, simply when I start to boot my device after a ROM flashing it has a new problem, I just gave up on motorola, tomorrow I'm going to return this piece of rubbish and get myself a SGS2 Because I've had enough of Motorola.
Thanks and no thanks to all, I've had enough of this rubbish.
good luck with your new device.

Okay, wish you better luck with your SGS2, try harder with it.. And please don't call the Defy a piece of rubbish because it is a lovely phone, infact I don't know any other device which can boot custom kernels on a locked bootloader
And if you manage to brick the SGS2 also, perhaps it's best that you get an iPhone next time.
My escape route when in trouble!
Was reading thru some threads when I came across some newcomers crying out for help stuck in bootloops while flashing custom roms.
Since I was free.Thought maybe write my own experiences down and what I did to get out of trouble.
Hope this not so short essay help someone new to XDA.
Let me begin with ClockWorkMod recovery.
I for one, have installed two types of Recovery to be on the safe side.
Anyways having the two does not in anyway hinder either.
Therefore it is only and added advantage.
If that wasn't enough there are kernels which come with preinstalled CWM of their own.
At the moment I've got 3.
I switch roms very often. Many a times in the beggining I often made mistakes and always had to redo the whole procedure all over again.
That means from scratch.Flashing custom roms, rooting and then delve in CWM -
X-Parts by pvyPARTS
which I had to keep downloading again and again from market.
Real pain in the ass!
Now where did I stop in the procedure, yes, after CWM installation, fastboot flash the kernel and now use the CWM to flash the roms and the other zips.
Then came across another recovery tool.
RecoverX by LEDelete.
Awesome tool.Does the same more or less as X-Parts except you need to run this on your PC and bind it to your device.
Color is bright neon blue.Very nice visually.
So now what are my choices.Do I retain one and let go of the other.
Made some enquiries about having 2 recoveries.Feedback,no problems. Sweeeeet. I'll take both!
Then came the kernels with their own recoveries i. e -
mechmetal for FusioN kernels
Did the dancing act at the beginning and very stable versions now.
Thank you.
I'll have that too.The more the better since it was not corrupting my device in any ways.
Presently, very few mistakes in flashing roms. So less frequent flashing stock roms. Mind you,it does require me,at times,to do complete clean installs once in awhile.
For that I have learnt a few tricks.
Flashing stock roms-the usual flashtool.
Since I have the bootloader unlocked, rooting takes less than 2 seconds. Simply a marvellous tool. Thanks to:
AutoRoot by bazoocase
Can't escape downloading from Google play store though OR is there a way?
There is!
Am learning that now but I'm actually trying to get only my most needed apps such as Titanium backup,Astro File Manager, and one or two more apps with its contents and data.
Jesus H Christ, this is only the beggining. There's a whole lot more to learn. But I'm liking it!
So newcomers, this might help you in your stay here at XDA.If via this lengthly passage I am able to help A newcomer I am satisfied.
Note:This are pointers for newcomers who have problems during flashing custom roms and start CRYing when stuck in bootloops.
PS: All the above are true facts.
I learnt by making mistakes here and there.
I did a lot of reading, searching, sending out PM's not getting replies and reading, searching and putting forward questions all over sometimes in wrong threads too.
For that I had been abused and bombarded collectively. But hey, that made me be extra careful.
These would happen to you but don't give up.Practice makes perfect.Don't shy off from making decisions.
You are already here.People can teach your everything but at the end of the day you are the one who is going to press that execute button.
It will for work for some cos they did exactly what was needed to be done.It might not work for some cos they didn't.

LreadyIt is good to see a senior member-op putting up a thread like this without being a know it all, smartass twat! I'm sure all the noobies will appreciate it! I personally worked it all out with a full month of reading. I have a bad temper and did not feel like getting abused and tyrated for asking perfectly legitimate questions! I say the same to all who are having probs and are new, keep reading, asking questions and don't give up! Six months ago I couldn't even navigate these forums properly, now I test Roms and kernels for devs! My biggest tip is find a kernel with CWM preinstalled and prerooted custom Roms! Remember one thing too, Titanium Backup is your best friend and is worth paying for the pro version! I don't like anything that isn't free but TB is worth the money!
To the OP here I think it would be good to insert a nit more detail on how to do these things and use these apps in your thread for those not in the know, maybe even some links! It's alot of work but I think noobies will be grateful! If you want some help to complete a noob friendly thread for flashing/rooting etc. PM me and I will help you write it up! We will prob get berated by others because of similar threads, but I have found them not noob friendly or incorrect! The only reason I still a junior member is because I have not bothered to make posts as have not had anything useful to say till recently!

Similar to the existing stickys, which are highly under utilized by new members, and as shown on a few occasions, by senior members too. Read Read Read, practice practice practice, is the only way anyone is going to learn, and I know because it's what I had to do for similar reasons to you when I knew absolutely nothing when I first joined, and if you're serious about learning how to tweak and mod Android then you need to be prepared to spend an hour or two sat at your computer, as you're not going to learn everything over night, in a week or even a month, and 3 years later you may still be learning, as I continue to.

these days even a five years child can root install a custom cwm , a custom kernel a viper4 sound mod and debloat a original stock rom
Lol.

a custom rom is exactly what it says it is, a customised version of the original android operating system that somebody has, in their own precious time, played around with to try & give us something a little different for this ageing device. Chances are that if you went out tomorrow & bought an S7 edge & fired it up you would have to update some gapps, whichever you may use. I think you need to take a deep breath & have a little more appreciation & understanding for the things that go on here. If a 5 yr old is able to do what you claim then maybe you should turn your hand to contributing to the community................... but thats just my opinion......no offence intended
Is this guy for real? Apps simply don't revert to previous version after you update them. There's a simple setting in the playstore that allows auto update of your installed apps to the latest version when they become available. And is this how you lose from custom Roms? Lololololol I thought your device blew up or melted.
Buy an IPhone and explain us how cool is it. You'll enjoy it, for sure
Pls close delete this thread its useless.

Believe it or not, but I have seen similar behavior with some of my apps.
I update it dl today and tomorrow I have to update again, but there doesn't seem to be any changes in the changelog.
But this happens rarely.
So I believe the OP exaggerates. This also started happening only recently, so it's either something related to the new Android updates - which means older ROMs (5.1 and below) should be safe - or something related to gapps.
To everyone who asked for this thread to be closed and/or brought up the fact it's in the wrong place, why did you not click on the little triangle at the bottom left of the post and report it? Mods can't do anything about it if they don't know there is an issue.
As to the OP, I actually tried keeping an Android 2.3.3 ROM's Google apps up to date - one of the features of the ROM I offered. To do that I didn't include anything but the Play Store. Today, such a task would be difficult. If you like, you can download a GApps package from OpenGApps on a daily basis and flash it yourself.

So I believe the OP exaggerates. This also started happening only recently, so it's either something related to the new Android updates - which means older ROMs (5.1 and below) should be safe - or something related to gapps.

Hello, I'm a new user this device, my previous smartphone was S8 (Exynos) but i swapped on OP5 8/128 gb
Now i have a question, which rom + kernel make better performance combo ?
I am running PureFusion with Lightning Kernel V15 and my phone performs like a beast

+1 for Pure Fusion, I get up to 10 and a half hours screen on time with better performance than I get on OOS, noticeable by eye.
Ultimately, you may find a better combination out there, but the baseline for me is Fusion, it just works as it should, stamina and power.

Go for the beta-build. Really stable and awesome battery-life. That doesn´t include the latest version of Lightning kernel but you can flash that easy in your recovery.
ROM: https://download.purefusionos.com/r...n_cheeseburger-7.1.2-20171001_140503-BETA.zip
Latest Lightning Kernel: https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=27265

Super smooth, absolutely as fast as Oxygen OS. I always use "GApps" and here U should choose "ARM64" and "7.1". I recommend you to use either "Nano" or "Pico", but you could choose whatever you want!
1. Flash the ROM in TWRP
2. Flash GApps
3. Flash Magisk/Super SU (If U want to be rooted)
4. Flash "no_verity_op5.zip" (If your phone are dectrypted, otherwise skip this one)
GApps: http://opengapps.org/
Magisk (Will not break SafetyNet): https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4302781&d=1508010356
Super SU (Will break SafetyNet): https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/supersu/download/zip/SuperSU-v2.82-201705271822.zip

Yea mate it's always the latest version of the Rom, I always clean flash too.
I've tried all the Rom's on XDA for the Oneplus, No limits for me is the best OOS Rom (personal choice) but overall and for the things I need from it, plus Displaylink technology works indefinitely on it, on OOS Rom's it cuts out after around 9 minutes which is a deal breaker for me.
10 hours SOT is superb.

Basicly:
Encrypted = Makes it more difficult for people who are not authorized to access information stored on the phone. You are thus safer when the phone are encrypted.
Decrypted = Opposite to Encrypted. The benefit with this one compared to Encrypted is a better performance.
You can check what U use by going to the settings menu, then head over to "Security & fingerprint", scroll down to the bottom and done.
PS: I am Decrypted!

before anyone drops any more advice here to this user, please be aware that narrating the entire learning process for flashing makes you partially responsible for what happens to this users phone.
@dzesiu2002 i strongly advise you to do research on all of these topics before going any further. you could end up wasting a lot of your time or worse: breaking your phone.
research research research. for everyone's sake. i'm not trying to be mean. this is the best advice anyone can give you.

This. Also, not trying to be rude and it's awesome that everyone is so willing to help, but I don't think spoonfeeding is the best option. OP has tons of questions (many that are simple and can easily be answered with self-research).
As the user I quoted mentioned, you should visit other threads that have instructions and information on flashing, encrypt vs. decrypt and so on!

Man, i have much phones all of them always have custom rom and kernel, so i never brick the device... All rom, kernel have in own thread installation process and i going with it, newbie for sure will brick the device, if i flashed much devices without a break them, then really you still think im newbie ? Cmon in my thread in #1 post, i dont write " its my first time with flashing the device, am noob or something like that " Newbies having 100% understandable tutorial about unlocking BL, install TWRP or Root the device, but they still ask for help, did you see anywhere in OP5 section about i needed help with that ? First of all, im not stupid and know any flash is risk, but if device bricked then this is not the fault of the author of the topic, only it is the fault of the user who carried out the installation wrongly. This post is for you and means you have to post something like this in threads people who really are green and dont know anything about flashing.

i am NOT calling you stupid. i AM definitely calling you a newbie.
the questions you have been asking are very rudimentary when it comes to flashing ROMs. regardless of your previous experience, it is still best that you do a lot more reading. this obviously isn't what you want to hear, but it is as true as truth can be. if you don't know what encryption is, then you shouldn't be trying to work around it. you should be figuring out what encryption is in the first place.
