My escape route when in trouble!
Was reading thru some threads when I came across some newcomers crying out for help stuck in bootloops while flashing custom roms.
Since I was free.Thought maybe write my own experiences down and what I did to get out of trouble.
Hope this not so short essay help someone new to XDA.
Let me begin with ClockWorkMod recovery.
I for one, have installed two types of Recovery to be on the safe side.
Anyways having the two does not in anyway hinder either.
Therefore it is only and added advantage.
If that wasn't enough there are kernels which come with preinstalled CWM of their own.
At the moment I've got 3.
I switch roms very often. Many a times in the beggining I often made mistakes and always had to redo the whole procedure all over again.
That means from scratch.Flashing custom roms, rooting and then delve in CWM -
X-Parts by pvyPARTS
which I had to keep downloading again and again from market.
Real pain in the ass!
Now where did I stop in the procedure, yes, after CWM installation, fastboot flash the kernel and now use the CWM to flash the roms and the other zips.
Then came across another recovery tool.
RecoverX by LEDelete.
Awesome tool.Does the same more or less as X-Parts except you need to run this on your PC and bind it to your device.
Color is bright neon blue.Very nice visually.
So now what are my choices.Do I retain one and let go of the other.
Made some enquiries about having 2 recoveries.Feedback,no problems. Sweeeeet. I'll take both!
Then came the kernels with their own recoveries i. e -
mechmetal for FusioN kernels
Did the dancing act at the beginning and very stable versions now.
Thank you.
I'll have that too.The more the better since it was not corrupting my device in any ways.
Presently, very few mistakes in flashing roms. So less frequent flashing stock roms. Mind you,it does require me,at times,to do complete clean installs once in awhile.
For that I have learnt a few tricks.
Flashing stock roms-the usual flashtool.
Since I have the bootloader unlocked, rooting takes less than 2 seconds. Simply a marvellous tool. Thanks to:
AutoRoot by bazoocase
Can't escape downloading from Google play store though OR is there a way?
There is!
Am learning that now but I'm actually trying to get only my most needed apps such as Titanium backup,Astro File Manager, and one or two more apps with its contents and data.
Jesus H Christ, this is only the beggining. There's a whole lot more to learn. But I'm liking it!
So newcomers, this might help you in your stay here at XDA.If via this lengthly passage I am able to help A newcomer I am satisfied.
Note:This are pointers for newcomers who have problems during flashing custom roms and start CRYing when stuck in bootloops.
PS: All the above are true facts.
I learnt by making mistakes here and there.
I did a lot of reading, searching, sending out PM's not getting replies and reading, searching and putting forward questions all over sometimes in wrong threads too.
For that I had been abused and bombarded collectively. But hey, that made me be extra careful.
These would happen to you but don't give up.Practice makes perfect.Don't shy off from making decisions.
You are already here.People can teach your everything but at the end of the day you are the one who is going to press that execute button.
It will for work for some cos they did exactly what was needed to be done.It might not work for some cos they didn't.

LreadyIt is good to see a senior member-op putting up a thread like this without being a know it all, smartass twat! I'm sure all the noobies will appreciate it! I personally worked it all out with a full month of reading. I have a bad temper and did not feel like getting abused and tyrated for asking perfectly legitimate questions! I say the same to all who are having probs and are new, keep reading, asking questions and don't give up! Six months ago I couldn't even navigate these forums properly, now I test Roms and kernels for devs! My biggest tip is find a kernel with CWM preinstalled and prerooted custom Roms! Remember one thing too, Titanium Backup is your best friend and is worth paying for the pro version! I don't like anything that isn't free but TB is worth the money!
To the OP here I think it would be good to insert a nit more detail on how to do these things and use these apps in your thread for those not in the know, maybe even some links! It's alot of work but I think noobies will be grateful! If you want some help to complete a noob friendly thread for flashing/rooting etc. PM me and I will help you write it up! We will prob get berated by others because of similar threads, but I have found them not noob friendly or incorrect! The only reason I still a junior member is because I have not bothered to make posts as have not had anything useful to say till recently!

Similar to the existing stickys, which are highly under utilized by new members, and as shown on a few occasions, by senior members too. Read Read Read, practice practice practice, is the only way anyone is going to learn, and I know because it's what I had to do for similar reasons to you when I knew absolutely nothing when I first joined, and if you're serious about learning how to tweak and mod Android then you need to be prepared to spend an hour or two sat at your computer, as you're not going to learn everything over night, in a week or even a month, and 3 years later you may still be learning, as I continue to.

I am new to the forum so I am not sure if I am in the right place. I have rotted my xperia arc and I cannot install the CWM. I have tried through Xparts and through the RecoverX (RecoverX seems not to be able to download the recovery). I have done the same thing in the past without havin any probelems. This is the first time that I cannot install it. Any ideas?
Thanks for helping

The Battle of the ROMs

With the surge of some ROMs for our devices, and though they're related between each other to a certain degree (save for CM7), the inevitable question surges: which one has the upper hand? The stock ROM is vastly improved since 1.06 and Ganjaman's add-ons make it more mature, the MoDaCo ROM has the advantage of having been the first modded ROM, CyanogenMod7, thanks to Apache14's work, has made a stellar appearance and we actually get the official updates (such as the ones that mad-murdock presented us yesterday), Corvus has been updating his new ROM quite rapidly and it works nicely, like Fuji-Vega does... We're lucky that we're not in want of possible choices! But which is yours?
Thread moved to General.
For me corvus. It's so quick and stable, and is the only one, where's my usb 3g huawei running. Did I told you, that it's really fast?
Sent from my X10i using XDA Premium App
I agree totally, corvus is so quick. I can't wait until it can be combined with mad murdoch's HC tweaks, the vega will be Ninja then!

@logseman
great idea for a thread. I'm considering starting a thread on a similar line, thought id check in and avoid toe treading and see if there is a need for it.
As a newb to vega android modding, its great that there is such a wealth of info and advice, but sometimes its not clear or comprehensive (at least in one place! )
I'd like to run a "what vega setup is best for me" thread. The aim being to allow users to show exactly what setup they are running, how it performs, pro's and cons, bugs etc.
By using a standard template, we can see what works and why. We can make direct comparisons between setups without searching through threads for hours.
Users can then copy setups and try if they think they like it. Might also provide devs useful concise feedback to help them progress roms / kernels etc.
If it already exists, feel free to point me in the right direction whilst mocking my newbe stupidity, but ive read and re read the main threads and can't see it.
If you're reading this and think it would be useful, let me know, with suggestions and i'll get the ball rolling.
I.A.O.
Edit: if you want to help or collaborate, pm me.
I'm not sure how setting up a "standard configuration" would be of benefit. Primarily because of two issues: first, the same custom ROM can have dramatic performance differences between one device and the other (I am a ROM tester for Galaxy S, people claim battery lives of 4 days which I've never heard about); and second, the point of Android is that it actually doesn't force any standardisation as of now: I don't see why users would tend to a certain set up which has been done by another person instead of experimenting themselves.
Don't take me wrong, I appreciate that you take interest in this thread, but I fail to see the point of your suggestion. Android has no predefined "set-ups" as far as I know.
Yeah, i get your point. For me too its all about modding and tweaking. But i also got the impression that some people just want to get there device configured in a way that works for them quickly.
Im certainly Not saying lets all set up the same, if we wanted that we'd just bite the apple right!
I just think it would be useful to see at a glance what is working for people. I.e - "i need a rom with no lag on my vega - ah looks like cm7 ttrc2 has lag issues", without having to read 178 pages to find out.
I guess it would be more like an "at a glance" guide to roms for each device.
I used Modaco since i got my Mobii/Vega, but yesterday i flashed clockwork recovery and started using Titanium backup for real, so now i am testing some ROMs and sofar i like fuji-vega the most, fast and smooth, only some lag in appmenu when i have the device rooted.
I spent a long time using mcr8 eventually with buzz kernel but I then got bored and tried cm7 which I loved but just could not stand all the lag when scrolling etc.
I am now using corvus which seems to work well for me. I hope to switch back to cm7 when it improves a bit.
I love CM7 on my phone and would love it on the Vega, but the wifi troubles it has at this moment on the Vega made me switch to first Modaco and than Corvus. The only bad thing I can say about Corvus is that I personally would prefer Gingerbread green icons aboive the blue ones in Corvus

I am in a similar position to you. I have only installed Modaco R8 and not really used Titanium Backup nor Clockwork Recovery. I find R8 lags after extended use (requiring a reboot) so I am interesting in changing to Corvus. I have a few questions.
What is the best way to move from Modaco to Corvus?
Can I use Clockwork Recovery/Titanium to ease the pain of transition?
How do I install CWR?
Is it best to go back to stock and then install Corvus? If so, will I lose all of my customisations?
Thanks in anticipation of a response.

I would do a Ti Backup of everything, then a nandroid backup before flashing.

You would want to wipe when doing an install of a different rom anyway, so you will lose settings, most will be restored by Ti Backup though.
> I would do a Ti Backup of everything, then a nandroid backup before flashing.
Sorry, how do I do that? I have Modaco R8 with Titanium Backup installed. How do I use Ti to "backup everything", what is a "nandroid backup", and how do I restore stuff after installing a new ROM?
Cheers.
you can find this information quite easily by searching
ti backup press menu>batch>backup all user apps and system data
Then after installing cwm (download zip open
cd /path/to/folder
./install.sh for mac and linux (make sure to downlod my fixed scripts second post)
or
click install.bat for windows
then click recovery app use volume buttons and power to select backup and restore)
wipe data instal rom
ti backup from market
menu>batch>restore all user apps and system data (modaco is similar to corvus so should be safe to restore everything if things start crashing repeat install and untick all apps that are already installed in ti backup)
there you go you have transitioned
sorry if this sounds patronising it sounded like you were a noob so i included great detail
p.s. this will all become second nature after a while
hmmm atm i'm using CM7, and after switching to launcher pro it's so fast !!
adw launcher is such a crappy launcher (sry, my opinion)
anyways, my flash is pretty laggy due to the unstable nightly builds, I mean they're not in the fully power.. but I will wait, <3 cyanogem
I wish we had the HC update soon, rly =(
Ive been using Fuji-Vega since april and applying updates when they become available.
Really happy with it and cant complain. Does what i need it to do.
Very quick to use.
Corvus5 for me right now. it's stable and fast as, with oc I have been using cm7 until a few days ago and will no doubt give the latest a shot before the weekends gone, it now has oc kernel
I can't use custom ROMs because nor CM neither Corvus doesn't let my Huawei e150 connect to internet. When I'll solve this problem CM'll my choice.
CM7 for me. I've tried a few but CM7 just feels/looks slicker.
Will there ever be a fully working honeycomb rom?

FOR NOOBS LIKE ME. FOR NOOBS LIKE ME FOR NOOBS LIKE ME. TOO MANY OPTIONS FOR ROOTING YOUR I9100G?
SCROLL DOWN TO AFTER SECOND PARAGRAPH IF YOU CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO SNIGGER.
HOW IS SOMEONE LIKE ME, Who wants to take over the world, but sometimes forgets to breathe slow enough, how is someone like me going to ROOT my phone?
ROOT MY PHONE!!! What is that? I mean i Know it sounds cool, makes me a G, and all that. But how do I do that ..... Without making a fool of myself, Considering i have a SAMSUNG GT-I9100G
THATS RIGHT.... A I9100G. what everyone considers the ugly duckling of the Galaxy range of phones. Its not though. its the ugly duckling. maybe abit pale (mines the white one) but my no means ugly.
ANYWAY. IF you are like me, and can read faster than lois lane writes, then you have probably read the TONNES of information worth its weight in gold on this site. There is enough information here to build a country, let alone a ROM.
Take it from me, some 9 year old somewhere, is going to be a nobel peace prize winner someday and all-round superstar, due to his reading and research on this site. he will walk on water and have an army of andriodians (humans who have rooted their brain and let the Android rom take over their decisions).
But i am not him. I am 27 and have a belly. And wonky teeth. and i like chicken burgers way too much. way too much. TOO TOO MUCH. (Five minutes later, after a chicken burger)... Anyway... the keywords here are NOOB . I9100G .ICE-CREAM SANDWICH ( ICS ). ODIN . HEIMDALL . ROOT . CWM . CYNOGEN . KERNEL . ROM .
You know, alot of people on this site have put in alot of hard work and there is so much information here, valuable information. If you read these posts properly, you cannot go wrong. the difficulty lies in the options. and if you are someone like me, with a IQ built on a diet of chicken burgers and cola... then options are meant to take 5 minutes to decide, may take 5 lightyears ( honestly, i am actually odins father. Odin, father of Thor).
But since Ice cream sandwich has come out..... and since the I9100G is still not very well assimilated in the rooting world ( however the XDA boys , are leaps and bounds ahead of their peers, with help i'm sure from the geniuses at SAMMOBILE). SO i have decided to put on my ' I ALSO KNOW SOMETHING!!!' Hat on, and with it, give my 2 cents in the department of getting the best out of your gt I9100G. YOU WANT TO MAKE IT BETTER, SEXIER. WHAT TO DO?
A. A KERNEL IS WHAT TALKS TO YOUR HARDWARE, AND TELLS IT HOW TO SHAKE ITS ASS. ITS SITS IN BETWEEN THE HARDWARE AND THE ALL THE OTHER SOFTWARE ON THE PHONE: THE APPS, THE OPERATING SOFTWARE (ROM)
B. AS FAR AS I KNOW, THE R.O.M IS THE OPERATING SOFTWARE, AND USUALLY THE ONE THAT COMES WITH THE PHONE IS BLOATED AND HAS UNNECESSARY STUFF SLOWING IT DOWN, AS WELL AS NOT BEING TWEAKED FOR OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE.
C. ICE CREAM SANDWICH IS THE LATEST ROM FOR THE SAMSUNG I9100G AS IT IS FOR MANY OTHER PHONES. SO ITS WHAT WE ALL WANT NOW. EVEN THOUGH MANY MAY CORRECTLY ARGUE THAT GINGERBREAD ( THE OLDER ROM) CURRENTLY FUNCTIONS BETTER.
D. A CUSTOM ROM OR A CUSTOM KERNEL ARE BOTH MANUFACTURED BY REALLLY SMART PEOPLE ON THIS SITE AND OTHER SITES, BUT I DONT GO TO OTHER SITES. THEY USE COMPONENTS FROM THE ORIGINAL ROMS ( KNOWN AS STOCK ROMS) AS WELL AS THEIR OWN PRODUCTIONS, WITH SOME HOT SAUCE AND SOME ICE CREAM..... ( NEED A CHICKEN BURGER SOON).. THESE GUYS MAKE LIFE BETTER.
E. TO ROOT YOUR PHONE IS THE PROCESS IN WHICH YOU GET TO BE ABLE TO ALTER THE KERNEL, THE ROM, AND MORE I SUPPOSE, DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU KNOW.
F. AN IDIOT IS ME. STUCK IN TIME FOR TOO LONG, NOW HE DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT ANYTHING MODERN OR RELEVANT. BUT HE WILL KNOW.
SO. IF YOU WANT TO ROOT YOUR I9100G, READ THIS ROUGH GUIDE, THEN READ UP ON EVERYTHING I HAVE READ UP MYSELF UPON ( SEE THE REFERENCES AT THE BOTTOM) THEN, MAYBE YOU CAN COME BACK HERE IF YOU NEED TO CUT OUT OPTIONS.
BUT I AM NOT LIABLE FOR ANY MISTAKES OR DAMAGED CAUSED BY WHATEVER YOU DO. I AM MERELY A VESSEL SHARING THE KNOWLEDGE I'VE PICKED UP ON THIS SITE. YOU STILL GOTTA READ SOME OTHER STUFF. LIKE eg.. i've said wipe the dalvik cache, but i havent said how. but its here on this site, just like everything else i've written.
******FIRST OF ALL , AND THIS HAS TO BE IN CAPITALS:::: THERE IS A BUG THAT AFFECTS MANY SAMSUNG PHONES, THAT HAS RECENTLY BEEN DISCOVERED, THAT CAN DAMAGE YOUR PHONE, IF YOU USE A DODGY KERNEL. SO I SUGGEST YOU ONLY USE STUFF THATS SAYS CWM AND CYNOGEN. I AM ONLY SAYING THAT COS ITS WHAT I'VE LEARNT ON THIS SITE.
THESE ARE THE STEPS TO ROOT YOUR PHONE ( IT HAS TO BE THE I9100G. ONLY THE G. AND NUTHIN ELSE. 'AINT NUTHIN BUT A G THING BABY').**********
*********BACK UP YOUR PHONE******
MAKE SURE YOU ALREADY HAVE KIES. it ensures your pc has the right drivers for the phone. then before you start ANYTHING, make sure kies is switched off. (check in task manager, all its processes should not be running).
1. DOWNLOAD ODIN AND INSTALL HIM. BE NICE.
2. DOWNLOAD THE GT-I9100G_LP7_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.5.0.4 FILE. ITS A .TAR FILE. ( I DONT KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS, BUT ITS SOME GOOD STUFF)
3. DOWNLOAD THE cm-9-20120615-NIGHTLY-i9100g ROM ZIP FILE, OR THE LATEST ONE AVAILABLE ( I WARN YOU THIS IS A AWESOME ROM. AND I NEVER USE THE WORD AWESOME)
4. DOWNLOAD THE gapps-ics-20120317-signed GOOGLE PLAY ZIP FILE. YOU NEED IT FOR GOOGLE PLAY.
5. ORDER A CHICKEN BURGER.
6. COPY THE cm-9-20120615-NIGHTLY-i9100g FILE AND THE gapps-ics-20120317-signed FILE TO YOUR INTERNAL SDCARD.
7. SWITCH OFF YOUR PHONE ( MAKE SURE IT HAS ATLEAST 70% BATTERY, OTHERWISE YOUR NOT A NOOB, JUST A JACKASS). LEAVE IT OFF. FOR NOW.
8. OPEN ODIN ON YOUR PC, AND THEN CLICK ON THE BUTTON THAT SAYS "PDA". IT WILL ASK YOU TO CHOOSE A FILE, CHOOSE THE GT-I9100G_LP7_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.5.0.4 . MAKE SURE THE CHECK BOX NEXT TO THE "PDA" BUTTON IS CHECKED. AS WELL AS THAT, IN THE TOP LEFT QUADRANT OF THE ODIN, THERE ARE OTHER BOXES TO BE TICKED. MAKE SURE ONLY ONLY ONLY "Auto-reboot" and " F-reset Time " ARE THE ONLY OTHER BOXES TICKED. SO THERE SHOULD BE A TOTAL OF 3 BOXES TICKED, THATS IT. NO MORE.
9. NOW SWITCH YOUR PHONE ON IN THE SPECIAL MODE WHERE YOU HOLD THE VOLUME DOWN BUTTON, AND THE MENU BUTTON AND THEN PRESS THE POWER ON BUTTON. IT WILL ASK YOU A QUESTION. I WOULD ANSWER BY PRESSING THE VOLUME UP BUTTON. ONCE YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION, IT WILL TAKE YOU TO A SPECIFIC SCREEN.
10.NOW PLUG IN YOUR PHONE TO YOUR PC, AND THEN LOOK AT THE ODIN PROGRAM. IN THE TOP LEFT QAUDRANT, THERE IS A AREA THAT SAYS ID:COM. UNDER IT THE AREA SHOULD BE YELLOW NOW.
11.PRESS START ON ODIN. IT SHOULD DO ITS THING........ THEN YOU ARE ROOTED.. SO NOW, YOUR kernel IS A GENUIS'S KERNEL, NOT THE NORMAL ONE. AND IT SHOULD START UP IN CLOCKWORK MODE (SOMETHING SPECIAL).
12.FROM THERE , CHOOSE THE " GET SOMETHING" FROM ZIP OPTION, AND SELECT YOUR CUSTOM ROM.... IT WILL LOAD IT UP. SICKKK MOVE!!!! NOW YOU HAVE A ROM FROM THE FUTURE.
13. DO THE SAME ZIP PROCESS WITH THE GOOGLE APP FILE. SICK HOMIE!!!.... NOW CHOOSE WIPE DATA FACTORY RESET. THEN WIPE THE DALVIK CHACHE.
BELLISIMO!!!!! C'EST BONNE!!!!!!! MAMBO MAZURI!!!!
NOW YOU ARE OFFICIALLY A G!!!!!!
SO SO SO SO EASY.
I HAVE PURPOSELY NOT GIVEN YOU THE FILE LINKS FOR 3 REASONS. 1. THEY ARE NOT MINE TO GIVE. 2. THEY ARE ALL OVER THIS SITE, SO WHERE YOU GET THEM THERE IS MORE KNOWLEDGE. 3. I DONT KNOW HOW. REALLY I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT FORUM POSTING AND OTHER INTERNETINGS... I AM ACTUALLY INTO HARDWARE.
THIS IS JUST THE SIMPLEST AND FOR ME THE SAFEST WAY TO MAKE MY PHONE A SUPER PHONE. SINCE ICS CAME OUT, I FOUND IT HARD TO CHOOSE WHICH ROM AND KERNEL AND WHY. I ONLY HAD MY PHONE 2 MONTHS BEFORE THAT. SO I WAS AND STILL AM A NOOB . I'M A NOOB. NOOB. NOOB IS ME. SO THIS IS A GENERAL ROUGH SMOOTHISH GUIDE AT WHAT SEEMS TO ME TO BE THE BEST MODDING RECIPE FOR THE I9100G AT THE MOMENT. THINGS CHANGE. ASK KIM KARDASHIAN.
SO I HAVE COMPACTED MY MANY HOURS OF READING, JUST SO YOU KNOW WHERE TO START...
EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT ROOTING MY PHONE I HAVE LEARNT FROM READING ON THIS SITE. SO I HAVE TO THANK THOSE PEOPLE WHOSE STUFF I HAVE READ. THERE ARE MANY MANY.
SO I WILL EDIT THIS POST IN DUE COURSE TO ADD ALL OF THEM, GOD WILLING.
BUT FOR NOW I KNOW, OF THE TOP OF MY HEAD, I HAVE TO THANK : PARAS LEHANA. CHAINFIRE. SUPERATMOS. CYANOGEN TEAM. CODEWORKX.. ASHWINSRIHARI.. JIANGYI.. SIDDIQULAH16.. FARYAAB.. NITINVAID... KINGSAPP.. BURGER KING.

Dude you do not need odin to flash the lp7 kernel... Why are you lengthning the process and making it tough??? Flashing a custom kernel and rom via odin increases binary counter....and you will have yellow triangle...
Simple:
Follow the second method and you will have the root access in less than a min....and no binary increase or yellow trinagle....
No offence but here are Many threads about rooting the ics g ver...pls dont start a new one... I know you want to help... If you really want to help... Then Try to get some knowledge which others dont know and post it...that might even help us...

You guys know much more about roms and kernels than you realise.
There are many of us who dont know computers that well. I don't think you have read my post. You would realise the perspective I have provided if you read it properly. So you would know I am telling the others like me to read and read.
But anyway. I've jumped in the water now. We'll see if I sink or swim. Using heimdall.. the instructions provided are not in good enough English for those who do not speak English every day. Like me. The PDF that paras lehana provided is a good starting point.
I don't think you guys realise how much you know.
Anyway... I am always open to constructive criticism... welcome my brothers, welcome.
Peace to all. Always.
And only special people can mention my derrière. Not you sir.

I appreciate the appreciation.
I have to edit the post to tell my fellow noobs that they should have a stock ics build first.
And also to add links to read. I will not add links to software. My fellow noobs will have to find them in their search for knowledge.
And the specific people to thank. Then I will thank all of them personally. I don't yet know how to thank. Buy I will today.
I have to say, the yellow triangle didn't come up. Maybe I was lucky.
But the binary counter did register my changes. I still don't know what that means. But I will research and then find the appropriate way in which to share this information.

first off i think its good that one of ur 1st post is trying to contribute instead of spam. 2ndly, thanks for taking the time to type it, although its a little lengthy.
just wanted to tell you that the number 11 point needs to be edited abit in case newbies get confused.
11.boot phone into recovery mode. if CWM app is present in phone, can click on CWM and boot into recovery OR switch phone off, hold up+home button+power.
12.once in recovery mode, select install zip from sd card.choose the cm9 file etc
Thank you for your insight. I will edit the post soon. I am having problems with clockwork, I want to sort that out as well and then edit my post. Any advice is always appreciated.
Peace to all. Always. Thank you XDA
To Mr. Kingsapp. When you say the second method, from which guide do you mean.. I want to learn to root my phone in the best way.. So you probably know the best way.... Once I have succeeded in doing so.. I want to try the v6 supercharger script. Please point me in the direction of the right thread to read.
Thanks.

But got into problems when i came to line 5 "Order a chicken burger"
Probably a very good guide ... But got into problems when i came to line 5 "Order a chicken burger".
The chicken burger part was kind is unclear to me ... I dont like chicken and is wondering if i a pizza would be ok?
... Edit ...
Decided to give it a try ...
Downloaded latest firmware and flashed it on my way down the stairs using "Odin Mobile Pro" ...
Done before i hit the pizza restaurant round the corner
Good news ... line 5 "Order a chicken burger" can be substituted with a "Order a pizza" and it's now working as a charm
Thanks
@OP
What are u smoking?
Cheers for the input and output

You! The Original Poster!
I am smoking Marlboro black menthol. According to an associate of mine it is like brushing your teeth. So that tells you the type of associates I have. Very fresh.

I cannot install ANY rom, simply device denies all

Listen, I can read fine and understand instruction.
the phone is rooted but each time I try to install a ROM it gives me a new error, the last one was library cannot found.
I tried about 10 different roms from here, each failed. Either its stuck on boot screen or doesnt let me pass boot menu no matter what.
I guess I got the devils phone.
Any suggestions?
I don't know why your phone is crazy, but maybe flashing the SBF again will help?

Which SBF? the rom's? I tried, same BS everytime.
I just use this ****ty looking 2.3.6 I just want the phone to look nicer cuz I hate that too-androidish look.
And a nice smooth scrolling in the menu will be nice aswell.
i'm really sorry to ask and i dont mean to offend you but we need a starting point:
- did you try to install zip via stock recovery perhaps
- did you install 2ndinit?
- defy or defy+?
- did you wipe/factory reset before flashong the zip?
- do you maybe have bl7 kernel?
actually, sounds really bad but hopefully there is a way for you!
Please list the exact steps you followed to root and get a recovery and also mention what you did in recovery.. don't worry, we will help you as much as we can
And also list some of the roms you tried flashing..

Yes
Yes
Defy+
Yes
I have 2.3.6 I'm not sure what BL7 is
I'm not a pro. But first I'd like you to
- install 2ndinit again
- reboot and press Vol-Down when the blue light appears
- use custom recovery do install your preferred custom ROM. (only use the ones for defy+)
you can NOT install custom roms from stock recovery!

Should I install a specific version of 2ndinit Defy? Can you give me the program, I'm confused what to download.
What do you mean stock recovery?
And another Q: If I was to successfully flash a rom, should I use GB or flash to JB?
stock recovery = shut down > power + vol-down
custom recovery = reboot > vol-down when blue light
no specific 2ndinit. just use the one that is mentioned in FAQ or howto install...
or here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212
If you don't know the difference between stock and custom recovery you might want to start reading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982

I have a few more Q:
Do I need to upgrade my phone to 4.1.2 before flashing a ROM that is 4.1.2 or will that be the upgrade?
Which ROM do you suggest for me use because I am not very decisive about it.
What do I need to do for this ROM to work for me? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
I have GB 3.2.6 rooted with DFP 231
1. no. there is no official 4.1.2 for defy.
2. i would recommend cm7.
use a version that is for the defyplus and you dont have anything to prepare more than you will find in the howto's.

Listen to this. It is not Motorola's fault that you have soft bricked your device. It is entirely your fault. Hundreds of other guys have successfully flashed their device with the ROM of their choice and are having no problems. Maybe you should read threads before trying to flash ROMs. If you do not know the basics of rooting and modding android, you should not attempt to do it. And if you have flashed your device without doing the neccessary homework, please do not expect help from the community. Please educate yourself to the required level before attempting to do such things. There are several well written and comprehensive guides and tutorials on the cyanogen wiki as well as here on xda which can answer all your questions for sure. For your own sake, please read them. Your posts in this thread highlight your severe lack of rudimentary knowledge about android. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, because everyone was like that at some point. BUT, we read and we read and if we didn't understand, we read some more!
Please understand that this is a community where we cannot help you if you do not help yourself. I'm sorry to to tell you this, but you are being a jerk by criticising Moto and whining that things aren't working when it is you who has done things in the incorrect manner. So stop being a n00b, stop whining, go read some threads ( ALL THE STICKY ONES, MINIMUM ! AS WELL AS THE ONES ON THE CYANOGENMOD WIKI ! ) and educate yourself. Just because your friend has modded his device does not mean that you can too.It requires a certain level of expertise which can be easily gained, provided that you are ready to be an eager learner. Remember this, TO GET GOOD REPLIES, YOU HAVE TO ASK GOOD QUESTIONS.
Get rid of the attitude, --- learn the basics --- and then come back. If you are still having a genuine problem, then we will help you.
PS: You mentioned that you are going to flash using RSD lite. PLEASE flash the appropriate SBF file. If you flash the wrong SBF, it can lead to some serious problems. Choose wisely. And if you make ****s in that too, please do not start a new thread, refer to the pre-existing help threads. Good luck.
And please do not ask for the links to the above mentioned threads, use the search function and your common sense.

I've read well over 30 topics here ENTIRELY and none helped, I've done everything according to the guides, simply when I start to boot my device after a ROM flashing it has a new problem, I just gave up on motorola, tomorrow I'm going to return this piece of rubbish and get myself a SGS2 Because I've had enough of Motorola.
Thanks and no thanks to all, I've had enough of this rubbish.
good luck with your new device.

Okay, wish you better luck with your SGS2, try harder with it.. And please don't call the Defy a piece of rubbish because it is a lovely phone, infact I don't know any other device which can boot custom kernels on a locked bootloader
And if you manage to brick the SGS2 also, perhaps it's best that you get an iPhone next time.

[Q] New to Nexus 4 / Couple general Q's

Hello everyone,
I am new to the Nexus 4 community however not new to XDA. I have survived an HD2 and also a T989 GSII. I have had so much success with XDA and I am looking forward to working with community of folks over here. I got a Nexus 4 (being delivered Monday) to enjoy the Android experience. However the more I look over it the more I feel it lacks some of the features that I enjoyed with previous custom roms like Toggles on the notification panel for example. I know there are many apps that will accomplish the same thing but why use all these 3rd party apps when you can flash a decent rom and get a better experience with often better battery life. I am coming from an All Star Developer ROM that is a compilation ROM ( CM10, AOKP & PA )
I apologize for the rambling. I need to know:
1: What is the difference between Original Android Dev and Android Development forums? GSII did not have two forums so I was a little confused.
2: For a genuine NEXUS device, are there still bugs in ROMS? RR, SOD, GPS not working, etc? This is not a huge issue with most GSII roms I just wondered if you guys experience this at all with this phone being stock Android already. I wouldn't think this would be the case.
3: I have done my research and I am ready to move on with rooting and probably Romming. Is there anything else maybe that would be noteworthy that is specific to the Nexus line of devices. This is a vague question so don't worry with it too much. I am just curious.
Thanks everyone! I can't wait till Monday!

Thanks for the info! I guess more specifically I need to know the difference between the "Original" Development thread and just the "Development" thread. Should I refer to one more than another?
Also, in reference to toolkits. I am just curious where the issue lies with that? Because honestly that is exactly what I was going to do. I am not lazy, just efficient lol. I figure why do alot of manual driver installs and command prompts if someone created a program that would do it for you? (I reference links below) Is it faulty software? Badly written programs etc? I would think there would be more room for human error when doing it yourself vs. something automated. What are your thoughts on this? Has anyone else had luck using the toolkits in the links? or any other rooting toolkits? Thanks again!

Because, you learn something very important while rooting & unlocking your phone. Human error is covered for by the step by step guide. Human error while using the toolkit, you're stuck trying to understand what the fck happened. Learn fastboot mate. Learn to control your device to a 100%, learn to fix it if it's stuck. Understand what happens with "fastboot OEM unlock". Do you know what that means btw..?
The difference between Original Development & Development is in the quote I posted above. Paranoid Android = Original.
TWRP Recovery = Original
"XYZ" Rom based on cm 10.1 + abcd theme = Development.

Hey thanks again. I appreciate the input. I have more to learn in the NEXUS forum. I am used to ODIN and other forms of Samsung software so I will certainly read over the tutorial and absorb information. It will also help me to share my knowledge with others.

Q&A

This a noob friendly thread to help people with some common questions. If the mods don't like this I apologize just trying to contribute.
Q... What is the first step in flashing a rom.
A... Backup of your boot.img or everything so you can safely return if a problem occurs.
Q... How do you flash a ROM?
A... ROM>gapps>kernel>root or alternatively if issues occur ROM>gapps>root>kernel
Q... Is a kernel/root necessary?
A... No on both I know one ROM that requires a kernel most don't reading the first page you will know. Root is only required if the ROM has force encryption and you don't want it or need root.
Q... How to unlock bootloader?
A... I'll link I'm a second post to motos website it has a detailed guide to do it through a few simple command promos.
Q... Where do I find all the features a ROM/kernel has?
A... The front page typically where the download button is at.
Q... How do I report a bug or problem?
A... Depends on the problem downloading a logcat app from the play store and sending the xml (text) is a good start. If more the bug isn't found there the dev is more then likely willing to help direct you to the files he needs.
Q... What tweaks do you use to get great battery life?
A... Honestly the phone has plenty but if you need that extra little juice the safest option would be using ex kernels power saving mode to dial down the core frequencies.
Q... Is the key n/a normal?
A... At first I thought I did something wrong but no need to fear a simple warning saying there is something custom ie twrp.
Q... My phones encrypted help!
A... A backup could save the phone if put on an SD card. You'll need to format and lose all data stored on the phone other then SD card so be warned.
Q... What's the best ROM?
A... Only you can answer this each ROM is unique and has custom featured tailored to different people. Need bare bones los has it need more aokp among many others have it. You get the point honestly just try it and see backups help here too.
Q... Was this phone a good purchase?
A... Thanks to the devs yes it is. Moto has skimped on updates lately but we still have 7.1.X because of them.
Q... Why is this X ROM unstable?
A... The devs are working hard some phones need to have six months to get los to even work so patience none of these roms are really unstable. The htc 10 didn't have BT for months and on los the dialer didn't even work but now fully functioning. So rest assured every darn bug will be squashed in time.
Q... Is the above mention stuff risky?
A... If it voids warranty yes then it is. Android has come a long way and it is however much safer now then every before to flash and root phones if there's a problem there is typically a fix. I do recommend new users to read as much as possible on risks and how tos first this is only a brief guide to the world of customs.
Q... Where do I find an answer to a problem I have?
A... While I'll support as many questions as I can in here I'd like you to do something's first. Search a thread that has some relative info say a twrp issue search the twrp thread. If that doesn't help google it and see then. Spend just five or so minutes and if no luck then come ask away in here.
Q... Why research when I can ask a question?
A... This is mainly because the people helping don't want to repeat too many times. However a response from someone can take time and it may not even be the answer you need so to save you time a little research ahead of asking the question could speed up fixing the problem.
Q... If I flash a kernel will it mess with twrp or firmware?
A... Twrp has its own kernel it runs on so kernel shouldn't mess it up. However it does mess with boot imagines so it could potentially do that rho highly unlikely. Firmware nope nothing you do really messes with that
This is by no means a complete list of things. This is tailored to our device so please keep it on such so I can help with device specific questions. If more needs to be added pm and I'll add it including suggestions and request for frequently asked questions I may have missed. Good luck on your journey cheers.
