So far better than expected. Coming from Galaxy Note 7, and I like this phone so far. Jury still out on battery life, but I had low expectations for that to begin with. (Unlocked T-Mobile)

I'm using the Chinese version but flashed the european firmware to use the google services. My last phone was moto x 2014. I'm happy with Z's fingerprint and camera(just compare with moto phones), and also the excellent design and build quality. Battery life is a little better than the new x as I expected, so there's nothing to complain about.

I'm coming from a TMo note 5. How's the battery life for you?

Also coming from Note 5 (but ATT not TMo) I have to say my Screen on time is way higher on the Moto Z. Note 5 battery life really wasnt that great.

I am coming from OnePlus 2 (flashed official CyanogenMod 13.0). I seriously miss the notification LED - please don't get it wrong - I know there is this "wave your hand over the screen notification" - but I found the notification LED to be more convenient.
Secondly, I am unable to setup Moto voice assist. I live in a place with lots of steams and bustles (24 hours) and the device is unable to measure the echo (or whatever it's called) - showing lots of error warnings (please don't advice me to go to a jungle to do the setup)!!
By the way, the loudness of ringtone and/or notification is pathetic (even @ 100%)!! Now imagine the horror - low loudness and without a notification LED - I am sure I have quite a rough and unpleasant ride ahead...
Battery life is okay-ish for me - leaves me with a 15%-18% juice when I return home at evening (I charge it 100% every morning).
Screen is the main reason (and that SoC sd820) - I am still liking the device. I am not yet sure whether I "love" the device - but I definitely like it.

Current version of Moto Display sucks. For some dumb reason they removed breathing function that would show notifications without the need to wave your hand.
Install Missed Call Reminder. With that you can at least configure screen to flash a notification (or camera leds to flash) when there is a missed call or message:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dan_ru.ProfReminder
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38143514

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, the app did not work at all on my device!:crying:
If I could have a iota of the idea that Motorola got ****tier with Lenovo, I would've opted for an LG G5.
I read on Motorola forum that the low loudness of the ringtone and the notification is a software issue and can probably get fixed with an update. Can anyone please pour in their inputs?

Weird, it works fine with my Moto Z (eu-version).
Btw. I have had no problems with ringtone or notification volume been too low. Only problem is that their volume control is linked, but that is Google's "bright" idea (but Lenovo should still have made them separate like few other manufacturers do). I modified my favourite ringtone files to play at a little lower volume so now notifications play at the same level.

Mine is an Indian version; even then, do the version(s) differ drastically? Probably I am doing something wrong. The thing is - when I am trying the demo mode ("try" mode) - nothing actually happens - no flash, no screen lit-up, nothing.

I don't think version matters in this. Have you read the FAQ:

That's odd. It's definitely listed under Moto Z Play -> Moto Z Play Guides, News, & Discussion -> Overall love
As far as battery life, it's by far the best battery life I've ever had on a phone. If you're a heavy user like I usually am during the weekend, then you get about a day and a half and roughly 10ish hours of SOT. If you're one of those people that uses a phone to do phone things primarily, doesn't play games etc, you can get a few days worth of battery out of it ez. This week (bc of thanksgiving) has been sporadic with me.

I miss the LED too - and don't understand why they removed the 'breathe' display. I love the phone, though - and I'll love it even more when they fix the 'quiet reminder' issue.

I come from a Moto G 2014/ Xperia Z2.
My Z2 just stopped working last september and since i bought my gf an Xperia M5 for her birthday i asked her to lend me her G2 2014, Sim reader was busted but costed me 2 dollars to replace myself, installed CM14 and stayed there for 2 months. AT&T offered me both this and the Huaweii P9 Plus but i went for the Z Play.
I like others miss the notification led from the G2, but i have since installed Chronus and I'm using the active display feature alongside chronus for quick updates on notifications. I'm a power user and heavy on the camera so this phone doesn't disappoints at all... I don't feel the urge to root it or install a custom rom since the interface is just so pure.
Only complain i would kinda say i have is the fingerprint reader. It's not that it doesn't work properly... it's that it is a bit...slow, t least compared to the one on the P9.
Battery is above golden truly. Yesterday i used the phone all the day long, and the went on a full 6 hours of screen time on spotify at a party, i arrived home with 57% of battery, obviously I was very much impressed.

It would be really useful if you could adjust the time of the "breathing" display when a notification arrived... It's a real super device but it needs one or two things to change...

Annddd I'm back! With a new Moto x!

Dev Edition. Woot. Again. I talked to motorola after sending back my old one. The microphone just stopped working and they would not do an exchange. They agreed to help, but couldn't give me the sale price any more so they offered me 70 bucks in free accessories. Woot
Reveal case and Dock here I come. Ugh...so glad to be sending back the nexus 5. Moto x ftw.
Anyone else have a slightly stiff power button? I pray it is normal. lol
Yeah, I'd say my DE phone is pretty stiff on the buttons....especially compared to a GS3. Did you have a DE phone before? I couldn't recall....

Root, gravity box with the sleep menu in the drop down setting + active notifications. You'll never have to use your power button again... But it becomes a habit after a long time using the power button to turn on and off the phone.

Ahhhh Gravity Box. Honestly I don't know how it hasn't became the best thing in android. IMHO it's THE best thing.
Good idea! Yeah I really missed the active stuff... It really needs to became a stock android thing. Just like touchless.

I have both.
N5 if you like to flash stuff and want raw power, X if you want exclusive Moto features and probably the better quality phone.
They are pretty similar in most other categories.

Nah, they're fairly similar. If the exclusive Moto features aren't a concern....I think the devices are fairly equal. I'm even matching my Moto x battery life....tho I run very lean and mean.
Size is another difference. The n5 feels bigger in hand for sure. Not weight, but dimensions.

I agree 100%. I had both for a while, ended up keeping the X instead. I definitely miss flashing stuff all day but I just don't have the time. I spend too much time on xda as it stands
MotoX Developer Edition went from German 4.4.2 to Great Britain 4.4.2 to T-Mobile 4.4.2 no problem. Fastboot FTW!

Looks like the creator of omnirom has figured oqut how to use the snapdragon 800 processor on the n5 to have touch less control... Still in beta be on the lookout. Along with dynamic notifications you got yourself the moto x on the n5.

I don't have an unlocked version I'm on at&t. I came from a 32 gig gs4 to a 16 gig moto x. I do admit there's times when I wish I had more gigs because I would love to keep more music on my device for maybe going to the gym or on car rides, but I have Pandora so that compensates for that. The things I love is active notifications, coming from an iPhone where you had your notifications on the lock screen its really useful in the end, paired up with touch less control saying what's up? And it reads your messages for you. On the nexus 5 you have to be on the homescreen and you have to have the Google now launcher to use the "OK Google" voice command. On moto x it has touch less control with the phone off you can just say "OK Google now" and it responds.. Say I'm driving and here in California its illegal to text and drive and I need directions or need to text or make a call touch less control helps with that. Also active assist is awesome! While your driving if you get an incoming text or call it will read your message to you and you can respond back or pick up a call for you. Pair this up with great headphones with a mic and your good to go. I'm using my gs4 headphones and it works great with it.

As far as my experience with the N5 and Moto X, I prefer the Moto X for a few variables. Of course, the big things that appealed to me in general with the first few hours of usage was the quality over the Nexus 5. Specifically the phone's speaker and sound card. Also, the phone takes less work in order to maximize battery. I ran stock rooted for the first few months I owned my Moto X until I saw Faux make his kernel, and that is the only reason I decided to even flash. Other than that, I just enjoy an AOSP experience with a few extra add on that makes the phone a much more pleasurable experience.
As far as 1080P resolution vs 720P resolution, I've always wanted manufacturers to opt for 720P as I understand the screen is a bit clearer, but you gain so much more battery life!
Driving Mode/Driving Assist is one of the biggest features for me as I drive quite a bit with incoming text being read out to me, and allowing me to respond back via my voice. As well as the ability to just continue driving, and suddenly your device plays your current music from your specified app that you prefer music to stream from!
The biggest thing that Moto X has to offer is the fact that this phone is the closest thing to AOSP with extra goodies that make the phone unnecessary to root, unless you're a flashaholic, which you are still able to with this phone. Just overall, this phone is a +3 more on a scale of 1 to 10 of N5 experience.

I'd take a snippet for you for each of the cameras but all in all. To stack up against each other, I find that the iPhone 5S camera is superior to the mobile world, aside from the Note 3's camera which is INSANE! But comparison of the N5, Moto X, and 5S. I think that the 5S > Moto X > N5. I agree the N5 camera is good, but it doesn't capture as much true colors as I find that it struggles to carry colors. I'd take the Moto X's camera any day, it's just consistent and the colors are generally quite close to my DSLR I use.
As far as build quality, hands down again, the Moto X takes the steals vs the N5! But compared to the iPhone 5S, I'm not sure, because the two are made out of two completely different material, and I find that I like metal phones, but it's not as a big of a deal with the Moto X because I enjoy the experience very much!
I think these forums feels dead, because there are very little users on it anyways. It's not that it's a bad phone, but it wasn't a popular phone either because many of my mobile friends weren't interested in it for the fact that it lacked in hardware, and they don't care for the software very much. Or they find that they prefer the hardware over software. I feel that people haven't given this phone a chance to impress them is all. All well! I hope the next Moto generates a lot of commotion, because it is in my honest opinion, the best phone of Android hands down. Simplistic, and it just works!

Dude, there are already threads with exactly these questions asked and answered here...
Anyway, i came from s3 mini and didn't regret buying this device for one second. Battery is amazing in my opinion (getting nearly 24 hours from 100 to 0 with about 6 hours screen on). Performance is good too, at least for me. But keep in mind that its not compareable to latest state of the art like one plus or s5. But it comes for a realy fair price...
Hope it helps [emoji6]
After 1 month of use i say this phone is great.
More excited to get android Lollipop.
this phone is just awesome , really.
if you don't want to spend to much on a phone - this is the phone for you.
awesome phone the best part is speaker in front really helpful when watching movies or songs
sent from moto 2 gen
It's a good phone no doubt, as for battery life I'm getting around 8-10 hours (I'm not a gamer but a heavy whatsapp user).

Only the hard stuff but dude, have you had a look at its specifications?
Don't hesitate
You can't be wrong. I received mine two weeks ago and couldn't be happier. I used a Samsung Galaxy S2 for almost three years (it was running OmniROM 4.4.4), and I was planning to buy an Galaxy S4, but then I thought I didn't want to spend US$400 on a phone. Finally I bought Moto G 2014 (8GB, Global model with one microSIM - XT1063).
PROS:
- Great screen, may not be "retina" however looks crisp and clear and the five inches are the perfect size.
- Fast enough. I do play games, and even some fast games run smoothly. I was a little scared on the 1.2 Ghz quad Qualcomm, but it's fast and saves a lot of battery.
- I've run 18 straight hours with moderate usage and still 25% battery. Battery is great.
- The microSD slot is just great to have. I spent US$16 on a Transcend 32GB Class10 UHS-1 Memory Card with Adapter and moved my heavy apps there as my ebooks, music and pictures.
- Sometimes you will use your phone to make actual calls. Let me tell you, the sound is great, so natural I was scared when I received the first call.
- Reception is excellent. I usually make a call everyday and with the SGS2 I always lose signal at certain highway spot. I was surprised the Moto managed to keep good quality sound through the same spot. (I'm using same carrier). Of course I did this with the loud speaker (s).
- Comfortable with one hand operation. Perfect size.
- Dual speakers with acceptable sound.
- No bloatware (almost)
- Altough I'm still enjoying stock experience, the phone is easily rootable, and Motorola helps you unlock the bootloader themselves on the site (there's a thread explaining step by step here on XDA)
- Lollipop on the way
- Camera quality very good on normal conditions. Even better than my SGS2 with the same 8 MP camera.
- Not ultra slim, but slim enogh. I was worried about this, but have no regrets. The phone is a great looking device.
- Led indicator
CONTRAS
- I was used to the home button on Samsung devices, and was a little afraid to break the power button, however I found no complains from one year users of the original Moto G. Also there are a few good aps to wake up device with the proximity sensor or accelerator.
- This is being too sissy, but my first Motorola Milestone had a multicolor led indicator which was cool to know if it was a message, lost call, email, etc. Moto G 2014 led is always white.
- In low light conditions, camera is not that good, but there are ways to improve with manual settings.
Let me tell you, all my friends/relatives who've seen my new phone are envy or buying one.

My First Impressions

Well, i just got my Moto X Play 32gb . And from less than 24h Using it, my first impressions are :
Battery : Looks very promising, it's settling down , but from a little usage you already feel like it will make thru the day easily , my mourning starts with me unplugging it, and wile making and eating my breakfast i check my e-mails, messengers , news , videos etc.. using about 1h screen time , then i put it back to charge for about 30 min. before i go out, and my Moto X 2gen and Galaxy S6 edge usually was around 70 something % after that first usage. The Moto X Play today was 91 % before plug it in , 1h 04 m of SOT .
Charging IT : Yesterday when i unboxed my Play X , it came with 60% Battery , my X 2 gen was around 70 % , i putted both on charging , both with the same cable and turbo charger , same model etc.. and the X play hit 100% 10 to 15 minutes earlier than X 2gen. so looks like it won't take forever to charge that massive battery with the Turbo Charger . One more thing : Moto X play now tells you when it's turbo charging , so now i will be able to test if those 3rd party chargers that says 2.4a or quick charge will get that message.
Display : With that extra size i definitely can see less resolution , i'm comparing with moto X 2gen, not SG6 edge. But after a few minutes using it you don't even notice anymore. The colors seem less evident, less contrast , but much better brightness and better whites. Active display lost the ir sensors so , no waving to see time. and the motion sensitivity is toned down with longer time before acting , so in the car the thing lights up less times although when at dark you see the whole display bright even the black part gets grey (typical from LCD panels ) But they should set the brightness lower for the active display , regardless what you are using for the screen ( i prefer more to the high brightness side , with amoled i go full , LCD - 80% ) .
SoC : Don't know if the processor is the cause, but i can fell some sluggishness when using multiple apps or switching apps i am tempted to say that it feels weaker than Moto X 2 gen . Both are still better than my Galaxy S6 edge tough.
Camera: Did little testing, but , pictures are definitely better but still fell like the same motorola camera, little lost to focus sometimes, little bit slow responses and movement , not a deal breaker.
Functions : Don't know if i didn't make the settings right but, i lost the ability to " chop " to flash light , only have the twist to open the camera , and it seems to miss sometimes , like it is less sensitive , unlike my moto x 2gen that rarely misses it.
Basic Stuff: Call quality and signal strength seems to be the same , and by the same i mean good . The loudspeaker sounds as loud as before, still mono, the stereo speakers for the X style would be more for quality i think ,than loudness.
............... Will update more later .
I would like to know the average SOT from 100 to 10% after you installed all the apps that you normally use with all the push notifications enabled.
- Can you please perform a multitouch test ?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=multitouchpro.tests&hl=de
LG G4 had issues there, just to make sure.
- How would you compare the performance of the phone to the Nexus 5 (in case you have a N5 or a friend of yours) ?
Please no benchmark test rather then real word testing
Thank you in advance

I will post , my phone are always the worst for battery life coz i do go around the city very much and we have a lot of speed cameras, so i use an app that turns gps on when i'm driving, so my day to day average on gps usage of battery is around 2 to 3h . I do a lot of Bluetooth streaming from spotify and some google maps to get around, high brightness, lot and lots os instant messages . So if a get thru the entire day without charging the phone will be great and for most people will get much better results, normally i always keep it charged, i do have car charger and power banks, but for today i will not use it to see how far it goes.

Well, i had a nexus 5, but it's been long time since then. But even if for multitask the Moto X Play performance was lower than nexus still worth the extra juice , and better camera.

I'd be optimistic about general performance, considering it's still on early release software and it's already faster than a gs6 edge
Apart from the missing IR, do you feel like it's a big step back from the x 2014 in handling moto features? Or is it the same (great) experience?

Well, i don't know if it's actually faster than SG6 edge, but it sure feels like it is, touchwiz fault i guess. yeah i do miss the IR sometimes too. For me it feels like a little step back in those great features motorola brought to us, maybe they are saving some of those for Moto X style so the style get more appealing. I'm all in for the style except for the screen size , i'm still adjusting to the X play.
Here we are, my first full battery cycle . I'm sure you will get better SOT than me, my gps usage was about 3h , spotify , bluetooth , android wear, high brightness , apps updates , downloads etc.. and this is what i got.
Safe to say you are a power user lol. Thats pretty impressive if you ask me.

No chop twice to flash? That's strange, during the firsts hands on (right after the presentation) they showed it.
Anyway, could you please post a screenshot of the sensor page of CPU-Z?

Yes it does, i think its used to activate the camera twist thing. FM radio only with the earphones , but yes it does.

Yeah, strange, i did a full restore today and didn't restore any backup, fresh start , still missing . When you go to the Moto Gestures on X 2 gen, it shows the animation for twist to camera and chop to flash, in moto x play it only shows twist to camera, and it's harder to activate it on Moto x Play than it is on moto x 2 gen . I'm playing now with both phones, and X play definitely shows a little lag typing with Swift keyboard and scrolling down the notification panel , i'm noticing faster responses from moto x 2 gen. Will test the CPU-Z sensors later.

Someone else posted a screenshot of CPU-Z on this forum. The phone does not have a gyroscope. The gestures are activated via a specific dual accelerator (like on the Moto G and the Moto E 2015.)

Well, i think they need to update then, coz Moto X play is missing some other features too , like the chrome extension app from motorola.
See the screen shots from Moto Action on Moto X 2 gen , and the avaliable action for Moto X Play.
This might sound crazy but I have yet to see the chop twice for flash on the Play and also if you look at the white model of the Style and Play you dont see the blue IR Sensors on the Play which would suggest you wouldnt have the wave to activate display features.
And also if you look at this pic theres no chop sensor?

BTW if anyone knows the G3 daily performance, how would you compare both?
G3 is my first Android device (excluding Wildfire as it was an awful experience) and I'm used to WP smoothness. With G3, I was generally happy with the performance but alt-tabbing/dealing with multiple wasn't as smooth.
Do you think the performance on X Play is on par or better? with performance I mean UI fluidity, lag, stutter, app switch quickness etc. I don't really care with benchmarks/games/first loading time.
801 might be stronger then 615 but the software optimization might create wonders

The play definitely does not have the four ir sensors. Anyway it has a "chop chop" sensor. On CPU-Z is listed as "chop chop gesture" (the last item in the list). Probably it they will update moto actions to support it.

Nexus 5X - Thoughts

I'll update this as periodically. As always with these sort of things comments are subjective - Ymmv.
Upgraded from a Nexus5 (had it from launch) running stock unrooted. Ran Marshmallow from start of dev preview.
Purchased phone Saturday 17th October ~ 10am so initial thoughts are based on usage from this time.
The good:
Fingerprint to unlock. Works really well and sensor location is perfect.
Build quality seems excellent
Screen quality is great, no backlight bleed etc
Size is bang on. Little bigger than the old N5 but a bit thinner and lighter.
Quick. No lag noticed at all (other than camera - see below)
Data transfer over USB is quick - 500mb worth of images copied over noticably faster than to the old N5
So far, battery seems decent. Better than the old n5. Too early to fully tell at the moment though. <edit 25/10/2015> Battery life still good - ~4hours SOT so far, or 2 days "normal" usage - links added below with screenshots </edit>
Slow-mo mode on video works well
Speaker volume a little louder than the Nexus 5, slightly better sound quality.
2 months free google play music
"Ambient display" feature is great - fantastic way to check notifications just by picking up the phone.
The bad:
Camera seems to be a bit lagggy and force closes a bit. Hung earlier on a green screen. There's a uhd 4k option for video - this just causes the camera app to fc. <edit 25/10/2015> 4k video seems to work fine now - potentially fixed by OTA - video added below</edit>
<edit 08/11/15> Phone swapped out for black version. Back cover discolored (orangey brown) on white model</edit>
The indifferent:
Haptic motor is a little nosiy
Volume and power on the side in the middle.
Headphones on the bottom
Phone comes with a double ended USB-C Cable as standard (i.e can't use it as a data cable for most pcs or use in previously owned chargers). Cables aren't expensive, just a bit of a pain

Some issues above are software related, this is a new device and these will be fixed - most likely pretty quickly after launch. I accept there will be issues with new devices - still listing them here so people are at least aware of current problems if they're deciding whether to buy now or wait.
Should also add, I run Nova Launcher prime - installed from the offset so haven't had any experience of the stock launcher on this device (or the Nexus 5 to that matter)
<\edit>
Regarding buggy camera, I have a feeling Google will release an app update and possibly an OTA when the official release date is announced or however Google wants to let everyone know

Much more natural looking than the Samsung screens. Just found random plain black image and tried at various screen brightness - looks black in all of them, not washed out at all

Can you comment on speaker volume and quality? Especially compared to other devices? I know the Nexus 5 was quiet but hopefully you have experience of louder/better devices too!
Thanks

Quality wise, it's not going to win any awards for amazing sound. Comparing the 5X and the 5 side by side, the sound quality does seem a little better on the 5X. Looses a little quality at full volume though.
5x does go a little louder than the 5 - but personally I don't find either is too quiet - they'll happily fill a medium sized room to a usable volume.
Overall how is performance? Is it laggy at all or nice and smooth? (I always set animations to .5 to make things more snappy anyway) How is multitasking?

No complaints at all everything is buttery smooth. Not seen any slowdown so far (other than in camera app). App switching is swift.
Just done a couple of side by side tests with the N5 - for the most part both performed pretty much the same. (i.e opening a random email via gmail app or rapidly scrolling down through G+).
I never really found the (old) N5 to be a slow phone - especially after the M release (preview was a little laggy) and the 5X is just the same. Tend not to run a load of widgets (Google now and Sonos + a clock) and don't have live wallpapers etc.
Added video of notification LED & Ambient display to OP.
Ordered mine almost 2 weeks ago and says it'll be here the end of October, I'm super pumped!
This being my first nexus device (coming from the GS5) I'm excited to have a quick phone again. The gs5 has gotten very slow (multitasking is almost not worth using). Thanks for the overview, the notification light seems like you can actually see it! Can you change the color? Or do you need an app for that?

Colour changes depending on the notification type - e.g Email is blue, Facebook green etc. Apps like lightflow may allow color changes, haven't played with it or others yet though.
Hope you enjoy the nexus - once you go stock android its hard to go back!!
Awesome post, thanks for your early thoughts!
It's good to hear you like the size. Literally the only thing I've been worrying about is the extra mm's to the height, but it sounds like the phone still feels great in the hand like the N5.
My anticipation ratcheted up to around an 8 after the shipping thread/change to processing, I'm now up to 9.5 after reading your thoughts, I literally can't wait any longer! lol.

Z5 PREMIUM - 3 months in review.

Just sharing my thoughts, keen on what others think about some of these points.
The bad
- Feels sluggish. I dont know why as I am very careful about what apps I install but it takes longer to go from selecting a contact to talking to that contact than it did on my LG G2.
- Camera too slow to load up.
- Battery average at best.
- Fingerprint Scanner is poor.
The good
- Camera once launched is very good.
- Screen is great.
- Thats it really.
6 / 10.
It wont go down as one of 'the greats' and I will probably swap it once the new generation of phones arrive.
JK
Thanks for the review but here is z5 forum not premium.
Doh. Apologies, Moderator pls move.
That pretty much sums up what I've experienced too with my Z5 so far.
At first I was super happy: The phone is very well built and it feels very premium/solid when you hold it. I'm a fan of the Sony design and I think it's the best looking phone on the market right now (with the Moto X Pure). The Xperia UI doesn't look half-bad, it even looks better than the stock Android UI in my opinion. The camera snaps pretty solid pictures and the 1080p60 video mode is pure gold. The loudspeakers are impressive, the screen looks great and the IP67 rating is just awesome
But after a few weeks many issues and annoyances appeared and made me realize that the Z5 is far from being stellar or far from being a phone I would recommend...
The firmware in general feels very rough around the edges and unfinished once you start digging deeper and using more advanced functionalities/features:
-Wifi thetering has been broken since October for me, and it's annoying as hell because I used that feature a lot with my Surface Pro
-Bluetooth connectivity is very unstable and unreliable in my car. I can't blame my car, I've never had problems before with my OnePlus One and Note 3. Since I have the Z5, it disconnects a lot, sometimes refuse to connect and it requires a reboot, etc.
-Auto-brightness seems broken or works eratically.
-I notice UI lag here and there, and it shouldn't happen on a Snapdragon 810 device. My old OnePlus One (Snapdragon 801) felt snappier and CM12.1 was buttery smooth. I can't say the same about Sony's UI.
-Maybe once a a day, an app (always a different app) will freeze and require a Force Close. Once I force closed it, I won't be able to launch it again without rebooting the phone.
-When there's 7 or more notifications from the same app on the lock screen, instead of showing all the notifications when you expand, you will only see a "@" followed by a chain of character. That's a known bug that has been patched months ago on CyanogenMod, and it's always present on Sony's ROM after many updates. That's annoying, it feels "unfinished" and unrefined. It makes it feel like the Z5 is running a beta firmware. That left me a bad impression when I first saw that bug again, on the Z5... it has been patched for months on my OnePlus One.
-So far, battery life has been subpar and acceptable at best. I know about the Lollipop "mobile radio active" bug and all, but still... I expected a little bit more.
-Sometimes, for no apparent reason, the phone will become very sluggish, with many little "delays" here and there to execute some simple tasks (open an app, open the Notifications Center, etc.) That's something I've never experienced before with my older (and slower on paper) phones. I think the firmware is the culprit
That's what came to my mind, but there's more issues and inconsistencies.
You know, I've had a OnePlus One from day 1 (well almost) and I went through all the early firmware problems they had. I'm not the most exigent and demanding user, but I like to see some progress and bugfixes... I knew OnePlus was a new company and I knew the One were their first phone... with time, the ROM got better and better, and a year layer when I sold it, the One was a pretty solid and enjoyable device.
But the thing is... Sony isn't OnePlus... they've been selling phones for a while now and I expected a lot more. I didn't expect the impossible, but I think it was fair to expect a phone that wouldn't have bluetooth issues, auto-brightness that works, a lag free UI experience, etc.
Sadly, that's not what I got... The current Lollipop firmware feels very "beta-ish" to me... it feels like a firmware that would ship with a Chinese 150$ phone!
Now all I hope is that Marshmallow will be better. In the current state, and if these issues are still present in Marshmallow, I will get rid of that phone and get a Nexus.
As a matter of fact, I've been using my old Galaxy Note 3 + CM13 for the last 6 weeks now... It doesn't crash, bluetooth just works, I can go through the day easily on a single charge and, in general, I enjoy using it more than my Z5 despite the fact that it's an old phone by today's standards... I still prefer an older phone that just works, than a newer phone that has the issues I described earlier.
The Z5 is my first Sony phone and probably my last to be honest. They failed to leave me with a good impression... For those who use older models like the Z3 or Z3+: the Sony firmware was that buggy when you got your phone? Did it get better with time and updates?
Yes I have high hopes for Marshmallow - will be make or break for this device.
I never had any problems with my Z1 and when the Z5 was released I got one at launch and I have to this day not had any major or lesser problem with it.
The battery is great, the camera is just fantastic, the performance is just superb.

My 750$ Z5 have been gathering dust in the last 6 weeks on my bed table because it's unusable for me in its current state (go read my post). I'm using my old Note 3 at the moment because it's more reliable and it actually works. And yes, I'm waiting to see if Marshmallow will fix these issues to decide if I keep that Z5 or throw it on a brick wall out of frustration.
To be honest, I don't think it's hilarious my friend

Z5 Premium actually. And I'm not the only one, read the forums. Hopefully marshmellow will fix is.
it seems we bought a different phone! i actually have the plain Z5 dual, i use it as work/personal phone, doing hours of conference call, call merging, and all what i need for an efficient day at work is there, it is true that i do not play games, no facebook no frills, but multiple email accounts, twitter, linkedin telegram whatsapp are there and i would recommend this phone for its build quality, call quality and signal, battery life more than enough, clean UI, top spec camera and video, for sure mine is not slaggish at all.
I also use it primarily for work, but it doesn't help. Sill sluggish. Sometimes just opening the task switcher can take 6-8 seconds.
Snapdragon 810 was a really bad idea and I miss my Z3.

send it back to repair, definitely.
Add me to the list of slugishness. To me it feels like a memory leak bug or something like that because right after boot phone is fluid and fast, but as you start doing things apps, animations start becoming laggy. It's not super slow for me, just something you'd expect from a 2 year old Moto G and not a premium device like this. I'm pretty sure it can be fixed with software though.
It's just a tad sad that 5 months after release this device is not running smoothly on Lollipop with some updates. I'm not even asking for Marshmallow, just that this runs as fast as my Z3 did. Other observations:
Device gets hot. Not uncomfortable, but come on, my battery is being used to heat this thing up instead of doing productive things
Auto brightness is FU
Sluggishness gets resolved on boot
SOTs are subpar
Camera startup lags
fingerprint scanner is super tricky
Dual z5 which I have has annoying double confirmation bug when phone calling. Come on SONY, does anyone QA your FW?
Hopefully all of this will get resolved with updates. This is such a beautiful phone.
