Nexus 5X - Thoughts - Nexus 5X General

I'll update this as periodically. As always with these sort of things comments are subjective - Ymmv.
Upgraded from a Nexus5 (had it from launch) running stock unrooted. Ran Marshmallow from start of dev preview.
Purchased phone Saturday 17th October ~ 10am so initial thoughts are based on usage from this time.
The good:
Fingerprint to unlock. Works really well and sensor location is perfect.
Build quality seems excellent
Screen quality is great, no backlight bleed etc
Size is bang on. Little bigger than the old N5 but a bit thinner and lighter.
Quick. No lag noticed at all (other than camera - see below)
Data transfer over USB is quick - 500mb worth of images copied over noticably faster than to the old N5
So far, battery seems decent. Better than the old n5. Too early to fully tell at the moment though. <edit 25/10/2015> Battery life still good - ~4hours SOT so far, or 2 days "normal" usage - links added below with screenshots </edit>
Slow-mo mode on video works well
Speaker volume a little louder than the Nexus 5, slightly better sound quality.
2 months free google play music
"Ambient display" feature is great - fantastic way to check notifications just by picking up the phone.
The bad:
Camera seems to be a bit lagggy and force closes a bit. Hung earlier on a green screen. There's a uhd 4k option for video - this just causes the camera app to fc. <edit 25/10/2015> 4k video seems to work fine now - potentially fixed by OTA - video added below</edit>
<edit 08/11/15> Phone swapped out for black version. Back cover discolored (orangey brown) on white model</edit>
The indifferent:
Haptic motor is a little nosiy
Volume and power on the side in the middle.
Headphones on the bottom
Phone comes with a double ended USB-C Cable as standard (i.e can't use it as a data cable for most pcs or use in previously owned chargers). Cables aren't expensive, just a bit of a pain

Battery stats from Sunday 18th added to links above and also attached to this post
Battery stats from Monday 19th attached to this post
Battery stats from Thursday 22nd -> Friday 23rd attached tothis post
Battery stats from Saturday 24th attached to this post
<edit>
Some issues above are software related, this is a new device and these will be fixed - most likely pretty quickly after launch. I accept there will be issues with new devices - still listing them here so people are at least aware of current problems if they're deciding whether to buy now or wait.
Should also add, I run Nova Launcher prime - installed from the offset so haven't had any experience of the stock launcher on this device (or the Nexus 5 to that matter)
<\edit>

Regarding buggy camera, I have a feeling Google will release an app update and possibly an OTA when the official release date is announced or however Google wants to let everyone know

Yup suspect you're correct. It's only software and there are always teething issues with new software and devices.
Added a disclaimer to the first post!

can you use it as a pedometer?

As far as screen quality goes, have you had any of the over saturated Samsung devices? If so, how would you rate it compared to them? When the Ambient Display comes on, does the black color look black or a washed out grey? Thanks.

Much more natural looking than the Samsung screens. Just found random plain black image and tried at various screen brightness - looks black in all of them, not washed out at all

Looks that way - Google Fit tracked a walk this morning and it's logged steps made.
Updated first post with shared folder with images added and a couple of videos posted.

thanks

the Google camera app has Always sucked. they can put an amazing camera in a phone. now they need to fix the app

Great summary! Looking forward to mine
The sample photos link doesn't work for me... I get the "504 Gateway Time-out"

Not sure why the link doesn't work - shared Google Drive folder, anyway added an alternative link - let me know if that one also doesn't work
Also added a couple of low light images into both locations.

I had no problems accessing the Google Drive link

Can you comment on speaker volume and quality? Especially compared to other devices? I know the Nexus 5 was quiet but hopefully you have experience of louder/better devices too!
Thanks

I think that's Tapatalk redirect service that doesn't work, not your link... Dunno how to solve it :-\

Quality wise, it's not going to win any awards for amazing sound. Comparing the 5X and the 5 side by side, the sound quality does seem a little better on the 5X. Looses a little quality at full volume though.
5x does go a little louder than the 5 - but personally I don't find either is too quiet - they'll happily fill a medium sized room to a usable volume.

Overall how is performance? Is it laggy at all or nice and smooth? (I always set animations to .5 to make things more snappy anyway) How is multitasking?

No complaints at all everything is buttery smooth. Not seen any slowdown so far (other than in camera app). App switching is swift.
Just done a couple of side by side tests with the N5 - for the most part both performed pretty much the same. (i.e opening a random email via gmail app or rapidly scrolling down through G+).
I never really found the (old) N5 to be a slow phone - especially after the M release (preview was a little laggy) and the 5X is just the same. Tend not to run a load of widgets (Google now and Sonos + a clock) and don't have live wallpapers etc.
Added video of notification LED & Ambient display to OP.

Ordered mine almost 2 weeks ago and says it'll be here the end of October, I'm super pumped!
This being my first nexus device (coming from the GS5) I'm excited to have a quick phone again. The gs5 has gotten very slow (multitasking is almost not worth using). Thanks for the overview, the notification light seems like you can actually see it! Can you change the color? Or do you need an app for that?

Colour changes depending on the notification type - e.g Email is blue, Facebook green etc. Apps like lightflow may allow color changes, haven't played with it or others yet though.
Hope you enjoy the nexus - once you go stock android its hard to go back!!

Awesome post, thanks for your early thoughts!
It's good to hear you like the size. Literally the only thing I've been worrying about is the extra mm's to the height, but it sounds like the phone still feels great in the hand like the N5.
My anticipation ratcheted up to around an 8 after the shipping thread/change to processing, I'm now up to 9.5 after reading your thoughts, I literally can't wait any longer! lol.

x10 VS Galaxy nexus, a comparison (in door and outdoor photos and screenies added)

WOOT! Please excuse my terrible spelling!
Ok so as many of you now know i an the pround owner of a galaxy nexus, the latest in the pure google software phones. The nexus seems to be gathering a fair bit of interest around the forum so i thought i will do a cmoparison of the two.
Now it would be silly to comapre benchmarks in quadrant or lin pack packs as we all kow the Nexus will kill te x10 in these (once benchmarking works properly in android 4.0) i have not even attempted a single benchmark at this point.
Screen and display
So to start with i guess alot of you must wonder how it feels in hand being a large phone with 4.65 inch screen, the answer is actually it feels very comfortable and having quite large hands i find it sits in my hand easier than hte x10. Some of you will know the Nexus has a curved screen, this worried me a little but if im honest you can barely tell its curved when your using it. While we are talking about screens not all of you will know that the Nexus is the first device to received a supre amoled HD screen, resoltution of 1280 x 720 (720p basicly) and the display is absolutly georgeus, rich and bright colours, very dark blacks. I did find yesterday when i was first using the phone whites had a kind of mild tint of yellow to them but this seems to be not so bad now, the colour spectrum now looks more normal and natural. Not had any issues so far veiwing in natural daylight outside but it is winter here in Uk and not much light during the day anyway. The screen is of course actual multitouch.
We all know about the x10 buggy dual touch and resolution is 840x450 and its just a normal lcd screen which can be hard at times to see in direct sun and is 4 inches big without 16 million colours. The difference in quality really is amazing, not just because of 16 million colours but the resolution and screen type. They are like chalk and cheese or cheese and chalk which ever you find tastes nicer
Screen scrolling of the Nexus is smoother than silk, i now know what people mean by eye-gasms lol If your interested the gingerbread crt screen screen on / animations are still there plus some that look similar to iphone for turning landscape to portrait or vice versa.
Performance
As previously stated i have not ran any benchmarks yet but the Nexus is a monster when it comes to speed and performance in general, it comes with a 1.2 ghz texus instroments processor. It has actually been under clocked by 300mhz for Nexus, meaning this dc processor is naturalally a 1.5 ghz monster, turned down presumabley to conserve battery. We all know x10 is 1ghz single core snap dragon with current maxium over clock to 1.2 ghz where it gets unstable for most.
Its a little hard to talk about the performace without general benchmarks to give a rough idea but let me tell you there is not a hint of any lag of any kind trying to use pretty much anything. I did find some lag while typing a PM to a good friend here on xda in landscape mode but quite a lot of apps wont have been updated to fully supportive of android 4.0 at this time so any update will sort that. Yesterday i did a full back up of my apps (system and data) and data on the nexus in titanium and it took about 45 seconds to a minute to complete, x10 can take a few minutes some times.
Software
I think everyone here knows the Nexus lauches with android 4.0.1 aka icecream sandwhich. It is very intuitive and easy to use, very easy to navigate and its on a whole other level compared to gingerbread. Espicially with the time taken to make everything look really very beutiful using mainly black, grey and blue with some greens and whites. If anyone is running cyanogenmod 7.1 there is a free icecream sandwhich for theme chooser which gives a a good idea of what to expect.
The launcher nativly supports folders which is very very handy for keeping stuf tidy together and organised. The folders couldnt be simpiler to create, simply drag an icon ontop of another and theres your folder and just keep adding till your heart is content! The launchre reminds me of the arc style one with the bar at the bottom with space for 4 things whch can be changed and folders can be added into these 4 spaces. With hte nexus you get most of the google apps pre installed which is nice, including a new version of google music with built in eq and its beutiful to use. There are also nice sound effects as you go through menus and for certain key presses, not as cheesy as the touchwiz noes or so noicey which annoyed me on touch wiz on sgs2. The software really is the best thing about the nexus
Camera
This is probably what most x10 users including me are concearned about, it has only 5 mp camera. Get the idea out of your head more Mp means better picture. Yes nexus only has 5, but what it does with those 5 is what counts! Pictures are taking almost instantly, google brags over zero shutter lag and i can see why! You can literally get probably about 3 pics in the time it takes to get one off x10! Actual flash is supported, flashes twice for red eye reduction and the led is very very bright, beats x10 photo light by miles. There is a native panorma camera feuture built in to the camera which is nice to use, upto 1080p video recording and 1.3mp front camera. This can be used for face unlock. Yes thats right, face unlock, when hte screen is locked simply point the front cam at your face which it recognises as you and will unlock the phone. I hear your questions about security, yes its not the best in hte world, it will owrk with a photo or if your phone is stolen in your sleep provided its light enough for te caerato see you. Its more of a fun thing at this time!
I will be uploading some sample photos later on for you guys to see. they will be in doors at night in my study where the pc is so excuse any mess in advance!!
Hardware
So i already talked about dual core, and camera but there is a few other things worth mentioning like for example hw buttons, or more to hte point lack of! There is 3 buttons in total on hte outside of the phone, power on (screen controls) and volume up and down rockers. Thats it, dead simple and anymore now i odnt find needed. All the buttons for apps, back and multitask are on screen. I hear another question, wheres menu? To put it simply menu is built in on screen for any apps that use or need it and not shown at all times. The mulittask button is much more functional to just switch between apps in a breeze.
Also worth noting is lack of sd card support. The phone comes in 16gb version or 32 gb (not released yet to my knowledge). The internal storage is lightning fast to brwose through, faster than class 10 sd card so i have read but nothing to back me up on that. I have the 16 gb and its fine for me. This choice may have something to do with googles plans for google music where you will be able to stream music from your library based on pc to your phone anddownload frequently used albums or tracks and eventually buy albums and tracks directly through the android market itsself (already happening in USA).
You will be pleased to hear that the headphones work normally, buy any set with built in mic and they will work without holding in hte mic button for musivc to sound normal, unlike sony you had to hold in hte button if you had decent headphones of your own.
Conclusion
Its the best phone iv ever had, probably one of the best on the market to date and after spending smoe time with it you will not want to use anything else. My x10 has been untouched and unloved for almost 24 hours. I recommend anyof you to get get one. BUT rooting is kind of a pain in hte arse, you have to first unlock bootloader then flash this superboot.img through adb (no recovery as of yet) and it has hard for me to get the drivers needed for fastboot. It took me quite along time to get root and unlocked bootloadre with the help of a dev, had it not been such a pain with the drivers it would of been much much easier and was straight forwards when the drivers were ok. Just so you you know you need working adb on your pc for root and bootloader.
So i hope this is an ok write up with enough detail, its taken mne long enough to type lol If anyone has questions please post and il do my best to answer when i can.

You already have yours??? God, I hate you right now Still waiting for mine to be dispatched at least
But thanks for the comparison, i was waiting for a honest review from someone who came from an x10 as well. Now it's even harder for me to wait. Dispatch date should be tomorrow though
Two more questions just came to mind:
- since you're from the UK, do you have the volume mute bug?
- Can you perhaps give or link me to the drivers and stuff that I need for rooting?

Yeah took delivery yesterday luch time, been on it as much as i can ever since. Trust me you will find it worth the wait thanks for making my review sound credible and honest. That first try at bashing something out like that. Could you be more specific about the volume mute bug, not sure if i had it, dont think so. My volume doesnt go up and down on by free will if thats what you mean? Will post driver drop box links later on. will aslo dig out some thread of use for fastboot adn rooting boot.img etc etc

Wow, I'm super jelly man! I would also really like the Galaxy Nexus! It looks fine! How is the battery life with constant use compared to our x10? Is it worse, better or the same?
I think I won't be able to buy the Galaxy Nexus this year. My x10 is just over a year old, and I just bought a new gaming PC. I will get one next year I hope so!
I'm really excited for the pictures! Thanks for the great comparison!

Battery life isnt too bad, i wont say its amazing and its certainly not rubbish, it depends on how you ue it really and screen brightness and various other settings similar to other phones out there.
Pics are coming but drop box cant decide between 49 mins or 5 mins. will upload asap
drop box for pictures rar in op. pictures taken inside at night time in one room, proably not best picutes to judge the camera from...
How good are you with a camera?
It'd be good to see a side by side comparison of the two phones showing the difference between boot up time, lag, responsiveness, browser speed etc....
That way you can really rub it in and make us mad

I'm not too bad, my main down fall is I don't have another camera to film all that on though. The browser is very fast though, lag only happens while typing sometimes on xda otherwise it just flys through everything with ease.
When I can get my hands on my gfs dhd will see if I can come up with a video perhaps.

Thx for the pics, the camera seems to be quite decent in low light/artificial illumination. X10 always gets blurry when I try to take pics like these. And you seem to have the same problem with X10 The shutter is just too slow after the phone focuses.
And thx for the files too! Now I just have to get my Nexus and figure out how to use these files
Btw. watch out! Now the internez knows your face!

Picked one up at Midnight at Best Buy, AMA / First Impressions

Got a 32GB black model at Best Buy at midnight, as they were open for the Call of Duty release.
Hardware - device is so thin. Easy to hold, and gorgeous. So far the screen seems really nice as well. For those hoping for a notification light, there isn't one. The thing on the bottom center is the ambient light sensor, I think. There's no "pulse notification light" option in Settings either, like my N5 5.0 Dev Preview has. Incidentally, my screen has quite a few yellow spots on it, and the back panel has one area that squishes and creaks when you hold it there. I actually have a Google Play order coming in as well, so I might return this one when that one gets here. The Boomsound speakers sound ok. They're honestly not as loud as I expected. I would say they're maybe as loud as my iPad 2's speakers were. Maybe. They're more full and all that ,but just not as loud as I had hoped.
Software - When I turned on my device, setup was pretty slick. It downloaded a 200+ MB update and installed it, got on my wireless and then proceeded if it wanted to do a restore based on my Nexus 5. I was eager to use the tap-to-setup method that has been hyped, but that was never an option given to me. It may be because my device has a broken NFC. I have tried several times to use my Nexus 5 to Beam something to my N9, and they have yet to even see each other when held together. I've used NFC A lot with friends in the past, mine seems broken.

Why not replace it now and cancel Play Store order?
Does it have the same kind of "soft touch" feel to the back as the 2013 Nexus 7?
I tried canceling it last night, but the order has moved to fulfillment. It can't be canceled.
I'm thinking i want it anyway, because their warranty is pretty easy. Or would Best Buy be better?

You can send the apps via adb!!! No need for root or anything.
One of the most important questions: how's the battery life?
Phonearena.com did a battery text and it's best in class even over the note pro 12.2

I tried ./adb pull /data/app/com.google.android.calendar but it said does not exist.
I know that's the name because I did a package list beforehand. Maybe the location is wrong?

Good question. I really won't know, being that this is day 1. Also, I think my device is a bit defective as it gets pretty hot sometimes and NFC doesn't work. Initial impressions should be all over the place this week.

The file name is now also a folder name in l. So add a / and the file name again and it should work.
Can you take any photo of these yellow spots your mentioned? So we know what to look out for.
Did yours also have flashlighting (backlight bleed) on the lower bottom right/left corners? Here's a video that shows what it looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iI_YbrOYWD0

L preview has apps in /system/app/calendar/calendar.apk for instance. There are apps in the priv-app also, of course. Do the final release apps appear to be different from the preview versions?

Looks like there is heat issues, light bleed, bad performance and bad build quality. Mines waiting at best buy, but I'm having second thoughts. Looking at galaxy tab s 8.4 a little harder now. Its 340 on amazon with same day delivery.

I picked one up about an hour ago, 32gb black, from best buy.
Couldn't wait for my play store order to arrive
I do not see any yellow spots or backlight bleed of note.
There is some along the bottom of the screen but comparible or less to any other tablet I have owned. Shield tablet, Note 10.1 2014, Note 8.4 Pro, just to list a couple.
Extremely snappy performance and I have note noticed any heat issues though I haven't yet had much time to put it through its paces. So far i'm rather pleased but time will tell...
Codeman, how does is feel. Is the back flexing?

N6 isn't the perfect Nexus ..

After a week of testing my N6 i can clearly say that N5 was a long way better in his time ..
I'll explain myself.
With the bug that make the sound going from low to loud. (And don't say it's feature because it's not ! Exemple : when you reboot your phone for exemple, unlock it and go to one game like clash of clan very quickly for exemple, you'll clearly hear the sound making weird things like there's low volume then going up by itself ..)
The performance issues.. (Many games stuttering, Facebook app that lags like hell, Here Maps too, Shazam stuttering animation.. Well in other word many app that doesn't act like it should with the power of our N6)
The battery isn't as great as Note 4 or at least comparable.. it's very inconsistant .. well it's still better than N5 but it's just "OK"
The purple tint when very low brightness (amoled issue but again Note 4 don't have a issue like that)
The camera is more than OK but it's still not like something WOW and taking a picture take much time if you compare to other flagship..
I don't own a Note 4 but after all YouTube Videos and even a friend Note 4 that's why i'm comparing these two..
But i own a N5 and back in december 2013 when i receive my N5 i can clearly say that it wasn't the perfect phone but more close to perfect phone than our N6 is.
I really hope that Google update will solve at least the performance issue and the "inconsistant sound" issue cause it's clearly software issue and make our battery a bit better.. Then i'll say that N6 will be more close to the perfect "phablet" I love my n6 beside all these issues, the material used, the 6" screen, the speakers (when they go well) and lollipop feature are awesome !
I gave up on the nexus and got a g3. I'm very happy. Its running lollipop and I have no complaints.
Some devs were talking about bad coding and lazy game devs being the cause of the stuttering since they haven't optimized them for lollipop; the same can be said for lag in apps.
The tint at low brightness is because the Nexus goes below 0 if you compare adaptive vs regular when both are at 0. You will notice the same thing if you use Lux brightness app on the Note 4.
The speaker bug will be fixed so that's not a big deal
My battery life is great, but YMMV.
The camera takes excellent pictures its more user error most of the time. Check our the Nexus pictures OP if you want some good examples of what it can do in good hands.
I'm with you on the poor game performance. Whatever the reason it's unacceptable and I'm going to give this several months to hopefully get ironed out.
Personally for me I loved the Nexus 4. If it had better LTE support I'd still rock one. I'd liked to have seen the new Droid as a Nexus. To me that would have been a better idea.
That said for my dreams, the N4 body with a 4.95in AMOLD dispaly and N5 hardware would have KILLED it for me.

Well how come that N5 with stock lollipop doesn't have any performance issue if it come from game aren't optimized for lollipop ?
I think it comes from the N6 software ..
I hope for sounds are going to be fixed ..
And for other issue as i said, it's like that and i know but well it could be better
I haven't noticed any game performance issues or sound issues. I am running Lean Kernel and have my GPU slightly OC'd though.
I have owned every Galaxy device there is (except Note 4) and the performance of my Nexus 6 is leaps and bounds over anything I've owned in the past. Its kind of like a race car.....you just have to know how to tune it right.

Will it? Because I'm hearing a lot of "It's a feature," the first step is admitting there's a problem.
I own the Note 4 but keep coming back to the Nexus 6. It is about preference. I'm on CleanRom + franco kernel and it is rocking in performance. This phone will only get better with software updates.
As for pictures, I learned something new by owning both phones. Yes, the Note 4 takes great pictures that look great on the phone but when comparing on a large screen I was surprised the pictures looked better from Nexus 6. I couldn't believe it.

I'm just going off of what was said. I read it in the kernel OP for LK or Franco if I recall correctly. It could also be the GPU using older coding trees which aren't as optimized(it was mentioned in the same place as the above)
The sound should be fixed, soon hopefully I 5.03 or whatever the end update is called. Its rumored that 5.1 is coming out in February.
I'm much happier with this phone over my G3 I can consistently get 6 hours SOT so that's fine with me and the development is crazy compared to other phones.

I don't think it is because my Nexus 9 doesn't exhibit this. It's hopefully going to get fixed here soon.
How quickly we forget... the 5's camera was utter horse crap when it was released. Go back and read those initial reviews.... it's not pretty. It took two updates to fix. My wife still has her 5 and my 6 focuses much quicker and takes far better photos in every condition we've come across.... and hers still can't focus worth a damn most of the time. Most everything written about the 6's shooter starts with some dig on the Nexus 5's camera.
And as poor as you say the battery is, I still get closer to twice the screen time on my 6.
And then there is better radios, much better speakers. And the screen... yes, the overblown red screen tint that only kicks in with ambient display and in a dark room and it's turned down...But let's ignore the lightbleed and poor contrast ratio of the 5's screen that makes blacks more like slightly uneven dark gray.
'course, the 6 doesn't fart rainbows and puke unicorns like the 5.
The 6 is a superior phone the 5 in pretty much every way and a much better match to the current competition.
But they don't make then like they used to, right? Revisionist history. I really liked my 5, but I'm not so blinded to not see reality.
Personally I love the device and couldn't care less what you did with it or why you don't like it

I don't know what perfect would be, but this phone is pretty dang good.
Am I one of the few who thinks the Nexus 6 is a perfect phone? I have zero issues with it.
I've been content with the N6 thus far and now a 5" screen feels like a flip phone to me. I gave my mom my N5 since she has a iPhone 4S and when I tinker on it I can't believe how small it is .
I've noticed the noise issue pretty much with only system sounds.
I've been getting a lot of complements on the photo quality using the HDR+. I noticed the N5 took better pics with the HDR+ before I got my N6. I've even had iPhone users at work ask me to take photos at our Christmas party LOL.
I'm bailing out soon as the next flagship phone comes out . Disappointed
I haven't met THE perfect phone yet. But the entire Nexus line is pretty close to what i want. The Nexus 6 has actually turned me off to smaller phones now. I am a big guy with huge hands, and now the Nexus 5 feels like a Snickers bar in my hand. Does the Nexus 6 have its faults? Absolutely. Every device has its own faults. But for my needs, and how it performs for me, the faults are miniscule.
OP please list the specs of what you'd consider your perfect phone and why. For MY needs personally, the N6 is perfect. Glad I was an early adopter.

This has been discussed at length in the performance thread. The fault lies with game developers who are known to put out crap code and do a terrible job supporting games.
As for faceplant...it has been a battery vampire and performance hog for a long while.
I understand your frustration.

This is my first Nexus device. As for other phones, like the LG G3, which I traded for my N6, what development does it really need with the exposed framework and G3 toolbox? Pretty much let you add any feature you wanted, so not much need for development at all, except for radios and such.
I have the Note 4 and it's a great phone, got to admit the Sammy did a great job with their overlay.
That being said, the N6 does seem to be a little subpar in the software department; but no doubt it will get sorted out, probably by developers here. I think that Google did not want to miss the Holiday rush and pushed the phone out with no real and varied test user input. So the few shortcomings of the phone were probably not addressed. In the end it's about what you want the phone to do. If you're a gamer, there may be a few titles you'll have to pass on, and I doubt they'll ever get looked at because not everyone uses the Nexus nor are there many available.
However, if you use the phone for the basics like phone calls and messaging, I think it will suit you just fine. Admittedly it could use some help in the design of the lollipop messaging. Very plain and not intuitive. But there are plenty of third party messaging apps to take it's place, shame though.
Sound is usually pretty good after the phone wakes all the way up, and battery life is comparable to many smartphones out there now a days. The hardware of the phone is outstanding and should still be in play a year from now, even competitive.
The size of the phone is nothing new to me since I prefer "phablets!" The built in wireless charging is a plus and something I hope to see common place in the future on all devices, time will tell.
Lollipop 5.0 and 5.o.1 need some help, and I think if you like to tinker with your phone a lot, XDA will develop what you need. However, If you're like me and don't have the time you use to, it might be a wise choice to move on to something else. I'm holding out until the next big update to see what issues are actually addressed and what development is made to move us in the right direction. I appreciate not having all the bloat that other phones get, but I don't feel pure android is up to snuff with enough user options to keep me interested very long. Got spoiled by sammy and LG tweakbox. I feel that should be the norm and it's pretty easy after attaining root on either of these to freeze or delete the bloat so there you go. If you are an avid flasher, this is the phone for you, but if you have other hobbies and interest, plan to move on to greener pastures.

You may very well get something up before the professional reviews come out!
First "real world" experiences are being posted by a user from Paris who was able to grab one at Colette. As I am still a new user, I can't post the link.
Googling "OnePlus X Review" will however do the trick (first hit on oneplus.net).

Hey, i'm the 20th person who bought it! I was in Paris on monday at Colette !
My review will be short because i'm not that good in english (sorry for that btw).
I really like the phone. It's actually the best design i have ever seen. Looks so premium!
The screen is the only bad point. Whites are kinda yellow and it's blue when you look from the sides.
The camera is really great, better than my z3c.
Battery is good without being amazing. (4h sot)
Only 39k antutu and it's kinda laggy with one game i tried (Minipix). But other games work fine
The phone is really smooth to use
Hey guys, I received my OP X yesterday and I'm actually really satisfated thats celarly the best phone I never had, No lag, Nice 4g, charging actually fast, and ... So beatiful. I recommend it to anyone who wants to get a cheap and powerful device

That's right. But i'm not a professional photographer, i use Auto on both phones. I know some people who can do great things with their z3c thanks to some custom settings
Awesome phone, the new Nexus killer!
Initial impressions
The phone is great until now
Build is simply amazing even if u don't consider the price. The screen too is brilliant, it's a bit over saturated but colours pop and blacks are stunning thanks to the amoled panel. The camera is quick, focus is fast, shots taken in good lighting are great but OK with low lighting. Similar for the front camera. The performance is great. Smooth and fast. Battery life has been good till now. Audio from the downward facing speaker is good imo.
Let's see how it goes
got mine on 7th in india.
battery 6/5
camera 5/5 - need to retest low light performance with the latest 17 mb OTA but without it night shots were average.
screen 6/5
feel4/5 its slippery plastic cover is a must
look 5/5
apps 5/5 no bloatware
cons
camera app needs to give more granular control
permissions control doesnt give the option of hiding device id etc.
fab device overall.
Got mine today. My last device was a sony z3c and ofc this one has some pros and cons facing the previous I had. The OPX has indeed a very good build quality, feels great in the hand. Size is perfect imo. Has no bloatware at all, comparing to the sony that has nothing but bloatware. Talking about this, I missed a gallery app, this phone does not come with an app to show the photos or videos in your device, what in my opinion is a must have, specially in a near stock android rom. Camera is good, fast and precise. Love the gestures features. Sound is loud enough and clear, in the speaker and in calls. It loses to the z3c in battery life once it has a smaller battery and a bigger screen, and once that z3c is one of the most battery friendly devices i knew. In the OPX I miss a fingerprint scanner, fast battery charging and the oxygen OS has a lot of room for improvements.

No not yet. In a Q&A session today one of the OP staff said they are planning to implement that in a near future.
I bought my X last Saturday at the London pop-up event. Thankfully I got a VIP invite so queuing wasn't an issue (more than 50m long when I left). A free phone cover (only the plastic ones, no wood (which seem to be plastic with a very thin layer of wood on both sides), no sandstone), a T-shirt, another invite and a notebook (paper ) were in the stylish bag besides the phone.
Much has been said before about the build quality which I can only confirm. It's very slippery though so the transparent phone cover from the box does a good job without disturbing the good looks too much. Don't peel the screen protector off together with the 'Never Settle' sticker!
The screen is good indeed but I would think the one of my OPO isn't worse or rather better, sharper. Thanks to the three LEDs per pixel (is it Pentile? Don't know!) the display is very slightly grainy but you have to look very closely. The screen of my HTC One M7 is definitely sharper though.
All phones are quick when new and this one wasn't an exception. Compared to the Exodus ROM I'm running on the OPO everything seems to be a bit choppy, animations are not as smooth. Turning forced GPU rendering on didn't make a difference. The first OTA update helped a bit but not by a huge margin. So far I haven't noticed any changes after the 2nd OTA update which came yesterday in the morning.
After now full four days I still like the phone for its size, everything works without a problem, no crashes, no freezing, Wifi and BT (tested only with a Braven 625s speaker) work without a glitch and so does Wifi Direct (tested with my Samsung 300NX camera). Charging takes about 2hrs, no QuickCharge here, but that also doesn't work on my OPO despite using an array of QuickCharge enabled chargers (all by Aukey). I seem to get a better phone signal compared to the OPO, Wifi also seems to be a bit stronger. Battery life is good, just about enough for one day with my usage (which at the moment means about 7 hours a day without phone signal (work in a basement) which no doubt reduces the battery life), definitely less than with the OPO but that's not really surprising. I've only tested the camera a few times, in those cases the focus was extremely fast and reliable, the picture quality - watched on the phone and zoomed in to the maximum - isn't DSLR like but still ok for Instagram, Facebook and for watching photos on the phone. No issues with the flash, I can turn it on and off and also the Auto mode works fine.
I'm still a bit torn between the OPO and the X, the latter being the nicer looking one and easier to handle, one-handed in almost all situations. The OPO's screen size is of course better suited to browsing and watching Youtube videos, on the other hand the phone can't be comfortably used one-handed most of the time and it's really big in my Jeans pocket. My OPO with Exodus seems to run a bit smoother, but when I once installed Oxygen on it it was absolutely awfully slow and choppy, so this is maybe rather software-related than down to the hardware.
I'm open for questions but I'm not going to drop the phone to test the durability of the glass panes and I'm also not going to run any battery drain tests. It's really, really strange what sort of people are trolling about in the official OP forums, 50% braindeads I would reckon :cyclops:

Finally got my G5 delivered today

After much messing about from EE i finally got the phone delivered!
Th G5 isnt much different from the handset i had a chance to use the other week. I have started to sit down look at it and work my way through the phone and see how its different from the G4.
First thing most people have commented on is the lack of app draw theres launchers you can install true but if you look under home settings your see you can also use Google Now Launcher that will give you an app draw.
Battery life i will comment more on in a few days but its fast charging works well what i was pleased about unlike my other halfs 5X the USB cable with this is only USB C one side!
The screen is a nice clear screen seemed ok in bright light im not 100% sure its better than the G4 (which im not a fan of in bright light) but it seemed ok? Nice sensitive and responsive.
Camera...... to be fair and honest the primary camera isnt any different to what im using on the G4 i will gladly post some comparisons in the the photography thread in the next few days after a bit more scrutiny but for what i am seeing they are like for like?
The 8mp wide angle seemed better than the one i used in the shop theres less artifacting on the photos in darker aeras but its still not blowing me away. Panorama with the wide angle lense is subject to a lot of distortion and skewing of areas from what i am experiencing. The main camera with wide angle performs well though i seem to have more positive results going right to left than left to right. Is this a software issue in stitching that can be tweeked? I guess so?
My handset can shoot photos with some basic filters built in, the black and white photography was very nice and clean with good ratios of light and dark.
Still im not over impressed with the gimmick options for the photography, i would have been good to see LG use both cameras effectively together as well and individually. If they had took a leaf out of HTC's book and they could have gave us some very cool smart blur, bokeh effects and improved low light photography utilising both sensors for a composite on details at low light as well as faster shutter speeds.
I genuinely do feel LG have missed the boat or better start working hard to bring us more in future updates giving LG G5 users a much more bigger and impressive functionality of the camera/s. 2 cameras independently and no synchronised use seems a waste?
Sound seems nice and fairly loud, phone calls are audible enough though my complaint with that im not sure if theres some kind of issue with earphones but i tried my earphones on both the G4 and G5 and the sound by default was preferable with the G4, again im sure its something that can be tweaked in an update?
Please ask any questions you may have?

Only if you like myself was at the end of your contract and getting the phone for free like me or interested in the modular system? Its a great phone but the G4 is just as good without any of the extra bells and whistles in my opinion?
I loving the look of the phone but that dont make it work any better.
how is the gap with the modular part? I saw some unboxing and some have a big gap and they are very unhappy with that.

I guess so?

My gap is practically unnoticeable unless I look hard for it. I do notice it doesn't quite line up 100%, as in some of the lines resulting from where the bottom of the phone and the screen meet aren't exactly straight. However, it is so miniscule most users wouldn't notice. I'm extremely picky and I'm satisfied

Ditto. It's not enough for me to return the device or even complain about.
As I've been using the phone more each day, I've come to really enjoy and appreciate the experience.

I am also about to pull the trigger on this. I currently have an LG G3 and use it for heavy gaming but its gettiing laggy with newer titles (even with root and optimizations) Do you guys think G5 and SD820 will last 24 months in terms of performance specially in gaming ? How do u find the screen compared to S7 and or G3 ? and finally can you post your opinions about battery life ?
Thanks

I am not a gamer so I cannot comment on game performance, but the overall general performance of the phone compared to the G3 is significant. I also came from a G3 that was rooted and optimized a bit and bone stock, this G5 blows it away. The battery life is very similar to the G3 with the difference being for me as I am a battery swapper and always plugged a 100% charged battery in and the phone would stay on 100% for a considerable time before dropping battery. Unfortunately I don't have my spare battery and charger yet so the battery isn't staying fully charged nearly as long. At the same brightness levels, the G5 screen seems sharper and just looks better overall when I compare them side by side. Hope this is helpful.

Cheers m8. Those S7 vs G5 comparisons are really starting to make me think that G5 display is too dull. I will have to see it myself in person to decide now.
Does it look better in real life, I think it looks fugly from the videos

I think it's nice IRL...for me, I focus too much on what I read (because I'm anxious to get the device) rather than the IRL experience. IRL it's just fine. It feels very light which I like but others have said feels cheap.
