Should I root? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hey I just bought an S7 edge and I am thinking of rooting it,but my 2 years warranty is going to be voided. The only root feature that I want to use is cooked features. So is worth avoiding my 2 years warranty? Tell me your opinion

There's several threads already such as this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=67496492
Bottom line though, only you can decide if the features you want are worth voiding your warranty for (assuming the service centres where you are check for Knox being tripped).

[Q] SingTel Note 3 owners who tried to claim warranty after tripping KNOX, how was it

Geez, not even enough space to add in that question mark at the end. Anyway, did you manage to claim warranty after tripping your KNOX counter? What was their response/reaction? Do you think it's in their policy to allow/disallow such a thing, or is it just a person-by-person basis?
Yes. Im able.

Samsung doesn't go by telco warranty like iphones.... Samsung will honour/honour? the warranty at their various warranty service centre.

Root note 4 WITHOUT Tripping KNOX???

Will be in the near future a way to Root The Note 4 WITHOUT Tripping KNOX? I want to root but don't want to loose my warranty.
Is it possible???
i doubt it if so it will be months away but rooting alone does not void Warranty

From what i've read it's supposed to void your warranty, yet there's people who say they've had warranty repairs carried out with KNOX tripped, so it's pot luck as far as i tell
Have them explain how tripping knox broke your hardware.

I work for an authorized Samsung Service Center in Canada and we do not check knox fuse when you bring your device in. Just make sure it's unrooted before you bring it in not to make things too obvious
There must be someone like the dev who create towelroot that didnt trip knox for note3 and previous versions.
Am using it on my tab note 2014 edition.
Honestly, atm it's too risky to root with tripping KNOX and then hope that your warranty service won't care about that. It's a 50/50. Waiting for a non-KNOX root.
If you're in the EU with all the many consumer protection laws, I doubt Samsung would get away with not repairing a hardware fault on a device unless they can prove it's because you rooted.
I'd soon be taking them to a small claims court if my now unrooted phone screws up within two years and they refused to repair or replace (I tripped knox)
knox being a hardware fuse is simply a shameful attempt by Samsung to claim you have modified the hardware and therefore voiding your warranty.
Just root if you really want it, like people have said before, most repair centres don't care if the knox fuse had been changed.
Would Knox will be tripped if I install stock firmware through Odin?

Hmm, here in Lithuania, my almost 2 yr old, heavily modified S3's SIM reading died (EFS partition R.I.P) and they said they won't repair it because of obvious reasons. I forgot to unroot though. That's why I'm really scared to touch my N4 yet.
Just make sure you unroot flash a stock firmware if you have to repair your phone for some reason. Who needs KNOX anyways

Don't you think those 'professional' guys check KNOX before doing anything?
Actually if you still want to retain warranty status I would suggest to root after 8-9 months(assuming it's 1yr warranty) after getting the phone. If you can maintain that long without going to service centre, I'm certain that one would not need to visit a service centre after rooting the phone.
That way 8-9 mnths from now more developments would have been released and you'll have more things to try out without the need of going to a service centre.
I'm not sure what professional guys you speak of but the carriers service center does not care when fixing your phone as long as you return to stock firmware before you turn it in. So you could always wait for eternity

By professional I meant carriers service. So basically once my phone, god let that not happen, breaks, I just install non-rooted firmware with ODIN and I'm good to go?
Yes :good:

I'm not rooted yet but am considering it once a few more weeks pass.
If something's fundamentally wrong with the hardware, it should manifest within a month, I'd like to think. Plus, I've never had a phone need repairs in the past. Which obviously bears no relation to this one going bad or not.
I doubt there'll be a ton of ROM choices for the Duos version but Play Store, Titanium, and Nandroids are nice to have.

is it worth rooting?

I ask this as I'm with EE and i'm not sure there standpoint on the Knox feature and whether my insurance will be void if I do root, reason I've gone F it is one there insurance is excellent, two there is a 6 month period where the phone is still technically theres and the most important reason, is there anything to be gained at this time? I don't see many custom roms at the moment, and few hacks worth persuing, I know we can debloat but it's a very minor detail when all of the above is in the balance.
In addition I've noticed I have Computrace agent running constantly i'm told this is some lowjack for phone theft, but I haven't got the best battery life in the world and i'm wondering if this is the cause, however I don't think I can remove this, if I do what might happen.
So is it worth rooting?

Depends why you want to root.. I do it to
- remove annoying ads
- titanium backup
- tasker
- xposed
Hmm currently only the ads.is an issue for me perhaps I should wait til a knox free root is available then
Not sure what you mean by Knox free root, to date no one has been able to root the Note 4 without tripping knox and I don't think it will be possible any time soon
I meant root without tripping.
There is a root for the note 3 and s5 I think which is towel root and that doesn't trip

The guy behind towel root now works for samsung so we won't be getting knox free root from him. I'm with ee and have insurance and have rooted. If i need to send it back for repair I just drop it down the toilet first, if they can't switch it on they don't know it's rooted plus insurance is different to warranty
What is warranty then? How have you interpreted it?

AFAIK in Europe due to eu regulations hardware failure is covered under warranty even if you are rooted. That's how I interpret it but as I'm insured my insurance includes accidental loss and damage so if I "accidentally drop it" then my insurance will replace the phone.
If you search xda someone did post the full eu ruling on warranty with rooted devices, reading it will probably help you decide
Thanks sawdoctor, you've been a real help

Samsung S7 Edge Root question

Yes, yes I know it's too early. But I'm coming from a sony device, and I wounder how fast root was available for the S6, just to give me an idea.
The z3c took about a half year, and there still is no root for z5 yet.
That said, that was only for locked-bootloader.
But I wounder, the S7 edge probably have an locked bootloader which is easy to unlock just as Sony?
And do I lose other features than Samsung Pay? In sony you lost a lot, camera, xreality etc.
If someone would give me an idea how fast a root will be available for samsung S7 edge either with locked/unlocked ( tripping knox) by compassing with S6 or S5 I would consider a pre-order or just wait until root is available.
The T-mobile version of the S6 was rooted within a week, I believe.
Only speaking for the T-Mobile versions, they have been rooted pretty quickly from what I have seen. The only thing that I lost from rooting was Samsung and Android Pay but I didn't care about those. Nothing else has ever been effected in my experience.

While I hope that is true, I doubt it is.
No one has the device in hand to root yet, and there is no links to this Odin file on that page.
Looks a lot like a clickbait to me considering the amount of blocked adds I get when going there.
If it does get rooted, Knox will probably be tripped, if Knox is tripped then your warranty is void and no Samsung repair center will touch it. ( happened to my boys S5 last week). Samsung pay WILL NOT work with a Knox tripped phone.

Strange they replaced the system board on my S4 with tripped knox in that case. It depends on the individual repair centre, it's not a blanket Samsung policy.

The S6 originally had a method of rooting that didn't trip Knox. But Samsung updated and closed the exploit.
book marked just in case. I just want my titanium backup so i can freeze bloat
So shop samsung website just redirects you to carrier phones. There is no way to buy an "unlocked" version right? I don't even see last year's S6 on shop samsung. I live in South America, but I have friends that can bring the phone to me... Since I am going to pay the full price, where should I buy one? Wait and buy one from Amazon? Have someone go to BestBuy and buy it whenever it is released? (Because bestbuy.com doesn't let me choose the $800 full priced one)? I've had HTC phones for a long time and I could buy them unlocked online easily.
@Chainfire is the king of this subject, if he gets the right files in hand i guess root will be achieved pretty fast... issue after is to see if there is going to be a deepsleep issue on the S7 / S7 Edge.
As what we realised with the note 5 going from a rooted 5.1.1 to 6.0.1 the deepsleep issue came back and dr.ketan made a fix for it. But it is a possibility that samsung has had / will put a trigger in the phone that once the root is done, the deepsleep issue appears. But this can possibly be fixed buy a great dev.... now we need to test and see.
What's deepsleep?

DeepSleep is when you have those dreams you have to clean up after, in the morning.
Seriously, it's the lowest-power mode of the system, most battery conserving, IIRC. More reading => http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/95625/what-is-androids-sleep-mode

I have S6 G920F and they changed display which had been scratched by original flip cover and nobody asked me about root or knox (they knew that it was rooted). But it could be a specal case with big media publicity.
My friend had an issue with screen (it didn't fit) and they told him that they could fix the screen but it wouldn't be under warranty and he must pay for it but (!)they didn't fix only the screen but they would to replace mainboard too! The fix would cost about 1/3 of price the phone so he refused the offer and bought a new one.
Official service in Czech Republic.
Then I was one of the unlucky ones. Keep your phone away from the Plano, Texas service center if Knox id's tripped, they didn't even give me the option to pay for the fix when I asked.

That is nothing more than instructions how to root using CF Root, which most XDA users know already. It even says the required CF Root files for the S7 aren't released yet.

Cracked screen and rooted

I managed to crack my screen this past weekend and I'm also rooted. I'm living with it for now as the crack is minimal. If I do need to return to Samsung do I need to fully unroot before I send my phone off? I've searched and can't find a good, definitive answer.
If you're planning on claiming warranty, yeah. If you're gonna pay the $300, it's probably ok.

Warranty does not cover self inflicted damages. You're gonna have to pay for the repair anyway. Even if you unroot, your eFuse is blown and the Knox counter triggered unless you have the Snapdragon variant and rooted without the Knox drama.
I sent my phone for warranty claim due to dead pixels with Superman rom without issue. Very fast repair. Got my phone with stock rom though. LOL.

Yes, but they aren't called warranty, they are Smartphone insurances you have to buy separately. They're an addition to your OEM warranty. But you're right, AFAIK, HTC is the only OEM which covers self-inflicted screen damages under their regular warranty terms. Unfortunately, Samsung's warranty terms & conditions are very clear regarding these type of damages.

I'm not in the US. My carrier actually offers 3mos warranty against self-inflicted damage regardless of phone model. I just didn't assume the OP was necessarily in the US.
