I have my sons phone who passed away in an accident in October last year. I need the "kik" msgs off his phone hes on bog5 I cannot lose the data so downgrading is not an option is there any way to root this SOB without losing the data. I have been searching for this since December so Im just finally asking for help. I already talked to the Kik Vice President in Canada and have the way to get the kik data file off the phone but need root.

I don't know what Kik is, but if you have what appears to be a valid reason, won't verizon help you out with this? Seems more likely than trying the "shifty" route. No offense meant, just trying to help you out here.

Didn't think they could out would but that's a great idea thank you worth a phone call on Monday level 3 tech I'm assuming

Imie not updated!

Ok I called cust service for t-mobile, argued about not getting update. Come to find out they use the IMIE to send out the update. They had the one for My Cliq XT and I had to give them My IMIE for this VIBRANT. He did tell me that when they update there systems tonight I should be good to go. Will update you all.

I always thought the IMIE was recorded before hand. I bought my vibrant without a contract and I do not have a data plan, also, as far as tmobile is concerned, i may still be using a sidekick.
would this affect my update status.
one more thing, i dont have a data plan, but im almost always on wifi.
CAN I STILL GET THE UPDATE?
My replacement Vibrant is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I'll make sure to call them so that they can update my IMEI, if this is true.
And it is IMEI, not IMIE.
I almost didn't know what the threat title was referring to.
Just ODIN flash the update, haha come on people.

Seriously a little sick of people starting posts worried about if they will get the ota update or if it will brick their phone... the update is posted on the site and can be flashed through Odin. Especially for those who have already been concerned about bricking easy enough flash back to stock and then flash update.

T-Mo's systems generally update the IMEI automatically, but there is more than system that reads that info - The billing system is one which doesn't automatically update, but really matter for anything. I was a TMo rep and I did see our other tools be incorrect, but this was very rare - I can only remember 3-4 times in the many years I was with the company, and usually this was just because there wasn't enough time for the system to update. This takes 24-48 hours.
Bottom line: you will still get the update and the op would have too if he had waited, because the rep more than likely just checked the billing system IMEI info.

don't worry too much b1wyatt. t-mo's doing this update in staggered waves. it's one of those things where you'll get it when you get it. i know ppl have already mentioned ODIN but there's Kies mini for the Vibrant as well. it seems sure fire if you've got a 32 bit OS (not so sure for those on x64 systems as some have complained that Kies mini won't see their phones ). i'm still kinda debating whether to use ODIN or Kies mini on my bf's phone for the update (i think Kies is safer).

Our Fight Against Verizon

If you haven't heard all ready Verizon is tracking down root users and limiting there data or fully suspending it so watch out. But we have to fight back against them by hiding Verizon from seeing that we are proudly rooted and some people have said the would sue Verizon. Please do whatever you can to fight against this.
Also motorola and htc are going to start doing the same.

Wow... just... wow.... First off, they MAY be tracking phones. Second, there is NO proof they are limiting anyones data or suspending service. I only posted that because it's something that MAY be happening, and people should be aware. It wasn't meant for fear mongering.
If you would have read the whole article, you would have seen that this is an INDUSTRY WIDE thing. Not just Verizon.
There is no need for ANYONE to freak out right now.
IF its true, and they are tracking people who have loaded GB on their phones, there isn't a damn thing you can do about it now, so just sit back and enjoy your damned GB Droids.
I am about 80% positive they are tracking after I googled for 5 hours.

It's very possible, and I wouldn't blame them too much. They should have a way to detect fraudulent warranty claims.
And for those of you who think rooting your phone and loading custom ROMs shouldn't void the warranty, your wrong. The carriers and OEMs put software on the phones they KNOW work. They DON'T know if the custom ROM you are using will work correctly.
I have no problem with rooting at your own risk (ie: Voiding warranty)....that's quite frankly, the way it should be, because if I'm overclocking my device I understand I'm increasing the chances of damaging the internal hardware in my phone. Nevermind, all the people who brick their devices because they don't know what they're doing.
I would hope that Verizon doesn't have the balls to try and go after people who are not doing anything illegal with their rooted device though (ie: Not tethering, regardless of how you feel about it). It's already been established that it's legal to root your device. Myself, while I've downloaded the tethering app, I've never used it for more then 30 seconds to try it out and see if it worked. I only downloaded it for emergency purposes, and I've yet to have said emergency.
Why would the carriers even care if we're rooted and using custom ROMs as long as we're not doing anything bad, like the aforementioned tethering? We paid for our phones and we pay our bills, so we should have the right to do as we please as long as we're not infringing on others.
As for me, I will stay rooted and if a class action suit is filed, will happily join in.
My question is' if we installed the non rooted version of gb, are they tracking that too?

They have been tracking root users long before the GB leak. From what I've read, they have been looking at who doesn't take updates. I don't know exactly if they put any snooping file in the GB leak or not.

Guys I really don't think they will be doing this. I understand that root should be a void in warranty, and totally agree with that, but if they shut off our services for having root, than a lawsuit should be made. They have no right to shut them down. Doesn't that breach that law made like a year ago about jailbreaking/rooting?

Well, you could argue that rooting your device is legal, but carriers don't have to let them on their networks.
Anyways, I highly doubt any carrier will be cutting anyones service.
I think what they might do is this:
They will send a notice to everyone that they are tracking root users, their meids will be flagged to ensure no warranty claims can be filed by them, and that if caught tethering without paying, they will be charged a fee.
That would be a logical way to go about it.

Exactly what I was thinking. That might be a no go with root for me. I need my warranty. Tethering is honestly not a huge deal to me, but if my warranty is gone I don't know what I'd do. I'm sure if one carrier does this, they all will start rewriting their policies.
This thread seems a bit incendiary.
I'm not sure what lawsuit people intend to file against Verizon. It isn't clear that tracking rooted users violates those users' rights in any way.
As for denying warranty service, I have rooted every Android phone that I've had, and I have no problem if Verizon denies me warranty service on any phone that I have rooted (so long as the problems could logically be related to rooting). I also modified my car when it was under warranty, and if the dealership denied me service on the exhaust, that would have been fine (although they couldn't deny me service on, for example, the suspension).
If I brick my phone, then that is my fault - Verizon shouldn't have to give me a new one.
I have no doubt that they are tracking/logging rooted users. Maybe this is why GB got leaked in the first place? This is all a result of the community.
The ones that tether the 20ish gb of data a month, to the "noob" that roots and messes something up and instead of reading up on how to fix, they just return it to Verizon. I broke a D2 a few months back, but instead of returning it, I bought a new one at full price because I was rooted. Its just a moral thing to me.
As long as you don't tether alot or do anything else illegal, I believe that just being rooted will not result in a termination of contract. That's just my opinion.

This is what I found out. They are tracking use to try and detect those who are tethering. AT&T is also doing this now to try and find out who is tethering w/o the appropriate packages. What they will do when they find the un-authorized tethering people is beyond me, that wasn't told to me. I was also told not to install the GB leak. This comes from a very reliable source within Verizon. I wasn't told much more than that or what they are doing with violators. I don't know what the deal is with the GB leak, I just know I will listen to my friend and not install it. Usually I am one who roots immediately and gets to town doing what they don't want us doing, but since this came from a really close friend, I will listen and take his advice.
I don't see why you shouldn't install the GB leak if you are just doing the non-rooted version. I mean what will verizon do? Block you're phone when the official OTA comes out? They can't do that.
I really don't see anything wrong with installing the GB leak, especially if you aren't tethering or anything to steal.

So much paranoia! I always like the "friend at Verizon" story with vague warnings of punishment from Verizon should we install the forbidden leak.
You'll forgive me if I'm a bit skeptical of your story.
I got a guy that has a friend that's related to the uncle of this chick that went to the same high school as this one dude that this other guy knew that said.....wait what were we talking about?
I think a lot of people are blowing this out of proportion. Most the people at Verizon haven't the slightest clue about what the head honchos are trying to do. They pass a lot of BS to their employees to see who leaks out information. Verizon tries to keep secrets the best they can, I doubt anyone knows what Verizon is trying to do. That's going for VZW reps and such. I don't know exactly how the GB leak was leaked out, but personally I'm glad it was, it is such an improvement for our phones and something we really needed. If this happens it happens, I don't know what I'd do (leave VZW, unroot, stay rooted) until the time comes to be honest.
First off.. wow.. with the Big Brother is watching stuff. And 2nd who cares if they are?! I will root every phone I get until I drop dead. And if you want to know why they leaked the GingerBread Rom.. it's called Research & Development! It's the old, "if we can't beat them -secretly join forces with them".

Are you sure it had something to do with you rooting and updating prl/profile?
Yeah, i'm quite sure if that really happened, the forums would be full of such threads. Sure it has to do with your rooting?
Intresting
I recently switched from T-Mobile to sprint for the N4G. First thing I did was root it. Updated PRL and profile after. It has been three days since that and I have no issues with the phone nor the network or plan
ditto! no problems for me.

You may want to edit the title of your post as a result of this revelation and/or put your update at the top of the OP. It's entirely possible people are not going to read your entire post to get to the update portion that clears this up and they'll go off into some panic and use ODIN to flash the wrong rom and brick their device (it seems people just flash the first thing they find recently).
Glad everything got sorted out for you

no simultaneous phone and data?

Please forgive me I did a search on XDA here in the GS4 forums and on google and could not find any results with my issue, if i did miss it please point me in the right direction "after week getting little agitated".
I have the AT&T i337 32gb version, was rooted running stock last week, on Tuesday all of a sudden I lost the ability to talk on the phone and use data at the same time, which I have been doing for years with AT&T and worked fine on the GS4 the first month or so I had the phone. Odin back to stock multiple resets, APN restores etc... no go. Sooooo did the stupid thing and took the OTA update just to see if was SW issue, of course wast so no more ROM for me. woohoo... took phone to store they messed with for over an hour and couldn't figure it out as well advsd me to call in to tech support which they did stuff for an hour and they couldn't get it either, sent me a warranty replacement. Thank god it came with mdl so before even putting sim in rooted and disabled the OTA update feature. Well after getting new phone set up have the same problem. They have escalated the issue and im supposed to hear something back this evening, i am just curious if there is something i can have them look at on the back haul of things that could be messed up, also I have 2 other phones on my same plan and they are working fine with talking and data simultaneously. Any ideas I can try would be appreciated.
FYI I have loaded the KANGABEAN rom on my device and using it now, but the problem happens on a completely stock ROM, i very seriously doubt i have 2 bad devices in a row doing the excact same thing, ive been wrong before so its very possible just dont see it.
Any advice I would love to hear and try
Thanks
I do know they throttle data while on a call even though they advertise it... I uploaded photos of proof that they throttle and while on a call, data is nearly useless. This has been brought up a few times since I've joined xda in the last two years even when I had an iPhone.

Ahh they servers were different. Here's another pic of me on call on the same server as the second photo (Carlsbad). Download is barely usuable but upload froze and trying to do any data related task on the phone during a call just doesn't work. I guess my question would be is your data not working at all during a call? Try doing a speed test and report back.
Edit: didn't read your post thoroughly lol. If it stopped working all of a sudden maybe it's the towers but that wouldnt explain the other two phones working. Either way I just wanted to put my two cents in about them throttling. Sorry if I wasn't much help.

It has to be something with the towers around my work area... I have about hour commute to the area I work, I work mobile so drive multiple counties and it will work fine till I hit certain spot then nothing. Now just have to figure out how to get att to see it. Thanks for input
If there is anyone around the Kernersville, Walkertown NC area that could test and see if they have the same issue I would appreciate it, I know i cant be the only one

Honestly I don't think John Legere can do anything about Samsung bootloaders now days. Think about it, Samsung expended millions of dollars in their Samsung pay and Knox all together. Samsung doesn't want unlocked bootloaders at least on the USA market due to once you unlocked your bootloader the majority of people root their phones, once you unlocked your bootloader and root your phone you tripped the efuse, once you tripped the efuse, Samsung pay and Knox is not going to work.
Believed or not Samsung pay is very popular here in USA, and Knox is very successful on businesses and corporations.
Believe me, Samsung doesn't want to loose all those profits, from the investment they did on Samsung pay and Knox program, at least not for a handful of people here at XDA. We are probably only 1% or less of samsung customers.

It didn't work with S7 and S7 Edge, it won't work for S8 nor S8 plus
Loving the enthusiasm here. You guys are a bunch of optimists! Definitely seeing how things get done around here.
Also, root and debloated roms were available for the S7 and Edge because a developer bootloader made it's way onto the internet. Now, I'm not sure t mobile had anything to do with that, but the ground work and traction John laid help make that possible.

Nothing lost in trying, no sense in crapping on it before even trying. Worst case samsung says no, best case John succeeds and we very the dev bootloaders with a legal disclaimer absolving samsung and tmo from responsibility. But asking needs to happen to KNOW the end result.

Don't let him fool you - I think he is close to 100% responsible for the locked US Tmo bootloaders. He only pretended to try and help last time. I got the same runaround from him/them on service issues related to their press releses that all towers were upgraded last fall.
The best fix is too late for those who have foolishly purchased another TMo branded phone - get a 955f. There are no bootloaders locked over there - they would not put up with it.
Custom ROMs have KNOX and android pay working, and saftynet passed on S7s and most of it already working on S8's

If you think there was a meeting in which he decided not to unlock the bootloader of a device, you're probably wrong. He's a CEO, not a phone security expert. Someone else made the call, and there isn't any real corporate reason to even reconsider it.
The international models don't support WiFi calling which is s big deal for those of us traveling internationally.
