Amazon Warehouse Deals - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" General

On a whim snagged a refurb Thor for $55 USD on Prime Day. Arrived in 'like new' condition (not a mark on it) with FireOS 13.3.2.5 which is fully unlockable. Score!
Might be from an older batch of unsold units. Still competes nicely in the shrinking field of premium 7" tabs.

The HDX 7 is definitely a better deal than the $50 Fire 7; it is so much more pleasant to use.

I'm afraid that the new old stock for 3rd gen HDXes has been cleared out. I was on the fence about the $70 3rd gen HDX 7 for a few days in early November (hoping it would go down to $55 on the seasonal sales) and then it sold out before Black Friday and only the $120 HDX 8.9 was left which I snapped. It did come absolutely new with english firmware but asian markings on the box.
I wasn't a fan of crazy-high PPI density (due to higher battery drain) but the difference with inferior PPI tablets and phones is drastically visible. If you want a universal device for consuming videos and text, that's definitely the device to get.
As much as I love the HDX 8.9, I wish I (also? instead?) bought the HDX 7. Even at $70 (pre-tax) it's a pretty good deal. At $55 it's an absolute steal.

Warehouse deals come and go albeit with less frequency as devices age out. Keep checking. As you probably discovered both HDX models have powerful backlights due to panel density but are remarkably efficient and readable at lower settings. On the HDX 7 I found relatively small adjustments in brightness have a disproportionate impact on drain rate, especially at the lower end. I also use Xposed to expand the brightness scale; happily ramps down to 1% with no issues. Great for dark rooms. Plays nice with blue light filters too.

Yeah, last night I was looking up information on some e-ink Android readers and stumbled upon occasional sales for HDX devices at (now amazon-owned) woot.com, however I couldn't figure out what generation devices are sold at woot.

If you click the specs tab you will find the info you need. For example the HD 8.9 is a Jem (not Apollo, Thor, etc) from 2012. You can also cross reference using this link ... https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Fire-Tablet-Family/b?ie=UTF8&node=6669703011

Thanks to this forum, I resurrected my old 32GB Thor by the downgrade to 4.5.5..1/Safestrap 4.01/CM11 in the stock slot method. I Iike it so much I was able to snag a used but pristine 16 GB Thor for 40 bucks from eBay.
Oddly, both consistently reboot themselves when screen auto-rotating on the most recent Fire Nexus ROM, but the CM11 ROM is fine. Now to unlock the bootloaders...

@Bawdy George - Nexus 4.0.5 or Fire Nexus HDX? The former is marked "discontinued" in the thread title.
@ggow - for awareness as Fire Nexus HDX (and/or CM 11) will likely stick around a bit longer for legacy SafeStrap v4 users who are unable to work through the bootloader unlock procedure.

I actually tried both. The older 4.05 worked, but I had Google Play store errors on that one I didn't feel like troubleshooting, especially since ggow released the newer kk-version which I knew was the one I should be using anyway. I assumed the reboots on screen rotation on that one were due to my error or that unit's hardware, but then it also happened on the second one. I'm pretty well-versed in Linux but this is my first foray digging into Android, and since I saw no reports of my issue I continue to assume it's a brain cramp on my part somewhere. And let me mention I have much respect for you guys here, since I do much troubleshooting of this type myself.

Hum - don't have an immediate explanation as SafeStrap/Nexus is a popular config with no history of spontaneous rotation reboots. As you are pursuing unlocking the bootloader (and presumably a newer ROM build) let's see how that plays out. There is a bootloader patch that addresses various hardware/kernel anomalies but that carries some risk and may not be required.

[Q] The Color still worth it?

So I have been an xda member since long before the android craze took root, or even before the icrap products were aired, back in the days when the good old winmo or symbian was the only platform of choice for enthusiasts and geeks like us. Those days are sadly the past now, and most of the good folks who were driving the growth of the winmo platforms have now migrated to android, or even ios.
I'm finally taking the jump too and have decided to tinker around with android, thus my dusting off of this account and bringing it back to life from lurker status. I've already purchased a xoom and an iconia a500 recently and am now looking to purchase a third tablet. I know, that sounds a little crazy, buying three tablets on the trot, but they're all going to go around among either family or family after I'm done playing with them. Since I've run my cash well dry by now, as you might as well have guessed, this is going to be my last tech purchase for a while, and probably might also be the tablet that gets left over to me in the end after the others are set up and sent to their new homes as presents as this will be the cheapest yet.
There, I've laid out the whole story. Now for the nagging question, is the nook color still worth the money? I had set my mind on the purchase and was getting down to the exploring options part when I noticed craigslist showing kindle fires going consistently for as much or as the nook colors or even less than that. And that has got me torn. I really badly wanted to buy another nook device, this will be me second after the nook simple touch, which I have yet to receive. However, I am also a performance and a bang for buck junkie, and I am also likely to end up staying with for the long haul. So I want something robust enough ot last me a couple of years from now atleast. Now with the fire sometimes going even cheaper than the nook, is the color still a good buy, and should I take the plunge on this, or that?
I really havent found a recent comparison between the two, especially if they're competing for my dollars at the same price point, to help me decide which one ot go with. The lack of a micro sd is the real killer in fire, the lack of dual core and a modern, higher performing soc in the nook color. I'll be buying either as a potential primary device and will be tinkering with both, meaning rooting, and installing custom roms, so I couldnt care less for what amazon tries forcing down my throat. And I will definitely be buying second hand, probably off craigslist, to save what little I can of my last bits of remaining money and hopefully buy a radeon 7850.
So there, thats my dillema, all put out in fornt of you folks. The question has been bothering me for days, and no amount of searching has managed to help me, and thus I have ended up here, resorting to the good old xda and its pool of immense resources.
Also, should I post this same question on the kindle fire threads too, to get the other side of the picture? Any help would be appreciated.
--Werentuckl
Nook Color is definitely still worth it* You can get them used or refurb and the prices come down to around $100.
*It really depends on what you want it for though. It would be more appropriate to compare a Nook Tablet to a Kindle Fire. But the Color is really the ultimate tinker's device. Great developer community and practically unbrickable. With CM7 and CM9 you get great performance numbers for the hardware and tons of bang for the buck.
Nook Tablet is also a good device but it is going to cost more which brings other possible tablets into consideration. Even though B&N wasn't as nice making the NT as open as the NC it is still a great device and the developer support is growing. It is nearly as good for tinkering as the NC at this point.
If you want a device for email, light gaming, web surfing, videos and tinkering as well as a great reading device the Nook Color is about the best bang for the buck you can get.
JP
I agree. Still a lot of bang for the buck, especially in the $100 range. My coworker always brings me ads from here and there advertising Android 2.0 tablets for $88, this one beats them every time for just a few dollars more.
I used to run Android 1.5 off the SD card using haret on Windows 6.0 (HTC Touch). I miss those days.
After Modding 6 or 7 Nook Colors for family, friends, and coworkers today I decided to pick one up from Cowboom for $100. My daughter has a HTC Flyer and Wife has an iPad 1. I really have no use for one, but I like to tinker from an alpha/beta tester standpoint, and I figure I could at least get my money back when I get bored with it.
All good points actually, and the reminder about android on winmo reminds me of my cousin, he still runs gingerbread of his hd 2. Good stuff.
However, what actually has me torn is seeing both the fire and the nook color going for the same prices. They're both hitting close to hundred on pre-owned units off craigslist. So I can't really decide which would be the better choice for the same price.
And the nook color was my first choice, the merits of rootability and the vibrant community had me won over. And then I saw the fire going for the same price for twice the processor, and now I don't know which way to lean.
The Fire doesn't have an SD card slot. Total deal breaker.
my nook essentially hard bricked without warning, just out of warranty. beyond that it was just too slow IMO for me - laggy video was my main issue. my RAZR is so nice for playing video i no longer can stand slow processor Android devices. my next tablet is probably the Samsung galaxy tab 2 for $250, dual core, GPS, camera, compass, microphone... all the stuff that is missing in the NC. i think you should save your money and put it towards something less limited
The reply above is right on. Personally, I would not buy another Nook in todays market. I have a Nook Tablet too (both were gifts). The Nook was great when I was learning to flash roms, etc because it is literally unbrickable.
What I really HATE is B&N and TI putting all the effort to lock the OS down. If it were not for the great devs here the Nook sales would have stalled long ago.
I for one will never buy another product which has such an anally locked boot loader and OS. The Nexus Tablet is right around the corner.
You should have asked here about the issue you were having with laggy video. I watch .avi's every day at lunch, Grimm, Walking Dead, etc., keep Hitchhikers Guide on it as a matter of principal and keep a few Pinky and the Brain's as baby sitting tools. I use MoBo player and software decode everything. Smooth as glass. The "Server Room Drive-In" is famous.
Ok, here's my 2 cents. As I only own NC, I'll comment only on it.
The nook color is a good device- for old technology. Ok, so the DEV team for NC is fantastic, porting ICS over, which has completely revamped how I see/use the NC now. It's awesome, plays videos, works smoothly. Everything is running clean from Eyeball's nightly.
However, as from your situation, you're looking to keep this device for a while. While the software side (able to crack BN, root, and run android) is fun to tinker with and has good support, the hardware is just not going to be good enough for these days' technology. There are a lot of apps that just needs more power than what the NC has.
So, if you're just buying to tinker and browse the internet on the go, NC is fine. But if u wanna do anything heavy, wait a few more months until some of the newer gen android tablets are priced lower in the market.
Btw, the fire without SD? deal breaker.
Okay, so I've been following this thread, and frankly, it hasnt made my choice any easier. I've gotten two posts against the nc, every post against the fire thanks to its lack of an sd slot, and plenty of others cautioning me against the nc because its dated. :'(
Now what do I do? And guys, even though I will be keeping this device for good, lets not forget that I'm under money constraints, I go any higher and I wont be able to buy my gpu. Plus, waiting is also not an option, I have until the end of this month to complete all my purchases, since I'm getting all this through a family member coming back from the states.

I fail to see a problem. You say you are a tinkerer. The unbrickable nature of the NC, (yes someone said they bricked it a while back but they also said they couldn't play videos either, do the math), makes it a no-brainer. Couple that with the fact that you can get them for between $100 and $150 all day long and you are golden.
I am actually satisfied with my nook color use it more than my ipad 2, feel that the ipad is big for all day use

Given the lack of information on the Google tablet, I would go with either the Nook Color or Nook Tablet. Given limited cash, obviously the nook color. I have a nook color and nook Simple Touch. I love the nook color, sure it doesn't have everything I want, but nothing does. If you are worried about it being dated, you will never buy anything. Everything is dated by the time it gets to market. The biggest problem I have is everything seems to be designed for something else. All the roms seem to be made more for phones than tablets, even my windows 7 notebook came from HP with ta
blet services installed and running on a notebook that doesn't have the hardware to use the services. I am more
worried about the Microsoft/BN deal. Perhaps it will mean more support for windows products in Android, more likely like the Kindle Fire, the next nook will not have a SD slot and will be designed to push people to Microsoft's online services. Perhaps even a nook running windows...
Microsoft always has found creative ways to kill great products... But from what I see, the Nook is by far the best for the money.
I'd agree with Floyd, the google tablet wont be launching until after I am unable to purchase anymore.
So, I'm leaning just a little more towards the nook now than I was before, and I have found a couple of other options to throw in the mix for considering as well. I just found the iconia a100 going for 190, a little under 200 after taxes, at the acer ebay store. And though the fact that the thing has little to no dev support or any roms for that matter, and has abysmal battery life, the thing is still very feature rich. Should I be even be looking towards it or not? Sans custom rom loading goodness and crap battery, its very good bang for buck, no?
Damn, this is so frustrating! This is why spending the last bits of your money is always so difficult. I had no such problems buying either of the last two tablets or the wacoms. :'(
And MisRy, everything is more expensive in ny, thats where the problem initialyl started from, the nc and the fire playing in the same price brackets. Though, any ideas about any decent deals or devices solidly under 200, new, or refurbed, or even craigslisted for nyc, would be welcome.

I would say yes, depending on the price. Got mine in Feb '11 and I've worked the crap out of it. I still don't see any other 7 inch tablet in the sub $200 range as flexable as the nook. The color with CM7 RC2 hits the sweet spot for me. Of course: YMMV.

Kind of in this dilemma as well. Has anyone had trouble running programs from the play market(3d games, comic apps, drawing apps)? I picked up a NC for 125 a week ago and triple booted without a hitch. It just seemed kind of slow to me, but then again I didn't do too much tweaking. I already returned it but might get it again. Awaiting the Nexus tablet, but would like something to hold me over til then. Any recommendations?
I wouldn't pay 150 for NC, maybe 100 nowaday since the nook tablet is going for 200.

Introductions Thread - Hi!

Since this is General, I hope this thread is relevant.
Proud owner of a new Tab 2 7.0 as of yesterday.
Just want to do a general check in and see who else is lurking in the woodwork. I have been an xda lurker for some time, starting with the HTC Hero, then EVO 4G, Epic 4G, Nexus S, Epic Touch (GS2), and finally the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.
I have been wanting to get a tablet for some time, but they have always seemed out of my reach financially. I love tech stuff, and am an android addict (tongue twister...). Seems the Tab 2 is taking a beating from many tech review sites, especially the 10.1. But I have to say, at $250, I think the 7" is a solid Tablet. I was so close to getting the Kindle, and if it hadn't missed the refurb sale for mother's day (they were going for $140), I would probably be a proud but somewhat reluctant kindle fire owner. The kindle fire is a nice piece of tech, and it really grounded the market for tablets I think. $200 seems the price that will appeal to the wider audience, not just the well-to-do. The extra $50 for the mic, cameras, bluetooth, and expandable memory was a no brainer for me.
In any case, loving my new Tab 2 7.0. Anyone else in the same boat? Anyone else excited to see what goodies the devs who will eventually start to trickle in can do with the Tab 2?
Let's get some life in here!
Love this tablet! Stepped up from the Kindle Fire to this Best bang-for-the-buck on the market today. At this point though, although I love the "idea" of rooting, I haven't had a real reason to do so -- the device works perfect for my needs right out of the box.
Yeah, I haven't rooted yet. I will once a nice selection of roms start popping up in the dev section. I saw AOKP has a release, 36 I believe. I loaded AOKP on my gf's nexus s and it has been pretty good, with the exception of a few bugs here and there.
I am interested in using a different launcher, but I am trying to conserve space and performance on the tablet. I think the thing that is going to push me to root will be when Apps 2 SD finally works. Let's face it: 8 Gb of space, with only 4 available to the user is just plain paltry in 2012. That's the primary gimp of this device. I have a 16 gig micro sd, but it's pretty much useless at the moment. I need my Titanium backup + APPS2SD. Trust me, when you start running out of space, which is bound to happen, that "idea" of rooting will become a reality for you.
The processor on this and the KF are virtually the same. I think it's the extra features that really make this stand out in comparison to the KF, not to mention ICS of course. Can't stand KF's interface.
I first bought the Kindle fire just for fun, Then I started
playing with android for the first time and was a believer.
I returned it about a week and got the 7" Galaxy Tablet.
Welcome to the fold. I have been on board since Eclair on the HTC Hero. I have been an android fan for quite a while and we have come a long way. This is my first tablet, and I'm loving it.

Apex is an excellent free launcher available in the app store -- only a few megs I believe. As for the need for App2SD, totally depends on your usage -- for example I use this device for media consumption -- books/movies/music. I've only loaded a few apps since the tab does those functions out-of-the-box already. It seems that "larger" applications are usually games, most others that fall outside of gaming are relatively small in which case 4.5gb is lots of space. My 32GB microSD card works perfect for holding the music/movie content. (Though FAT32 has a single filesize limit of 4GB which is a prob for some).
KFire still has a lot going for it in terms of pricing. As of today you can buy them used between 100-150 dollars and the port of ICS to it is pretty far along. In a few months I bet you'll be able to get them for $100 used and have a fully functional ICS experience available

Not trying to disagree with you, but most phones have had apps to sd for a long time. I'm not exactly sure what the rationale is behind not having apps 2 sd right out of the box. My ipod touch 2nd gen from 2009 had 16 gigs. So yeah, i would say that 8 gb in 2012 is kind of pathetic, esp since samsung was trying to one up the kindle fire.
I have never been a fan of Apps2sd, because a lot of apps do not run properly or are slower from sd. Running things off of removable memory often times corrupts data. Internal memory is optimum way to run apps. Also apps do not take up as much internal memory as one thinks.
I do agree though that the tab 2 should have more internal memory. 8gbs is ok though, if you are not filling it up with tons of movies and mp3.
I got into the Android scene with the Cliq XT then shortly after i bought a Samsung Vibrant and have flashed nearly every rom for it. I have finally settled on the updated Bionix froyo rom and everything just works!
I set my sights on getting a tablet and i had bought the Kindle Fire and rooted it and played with it for barely a week when i walked by a GTab2 and did a double take when i saw the price haha. Needless to say i returned the KF to watch the Avengers and anxiously awaited my next paycheck to fund the difference and got the GTab2! Very satisfied with the device!
Im pursuing a degree in information systems and plan to get into programming. I hope to be able to contribute to the Android community! Nice to meet all of you!

Satisfied thus far
Hi, all. I picked up my GT2 7 yesterday and have to say that I am quite pleased.
I have been watching the reviews of this device (both user and "pro") for a few weeks now, and decided to take the plunge. It is my first Samsung Tablet (I currently own a Prime, Xoom Wifi, Kindle Fire, iPad 2, and Dell Streak 7).
Since it is my first Samsung, it is taking me a bit to get used to the Samsung tweaks to the UI (in fact, not crazy at all about them seeing that I have ICS Prime and on the Xoom Wifi).
My observations thus far:
1 - It is quite quick. Surprised me here, as several reviews said it wasn't. I cannot see noticeable differences from the other devices I use.
2 - Wifi is a little iffy - It often registers 1-2 bars when I am quite close to my routers in my house (I will test at my workplace today). I will have to report back on this - it does not appear that speeds are effected.
3 - The devices feels good, though honestly it feels a bit heftier to me than it should, but that is not a deal breaker.
Basically, I wanted to replace the Fire with a nice 7" ICS device, and think I have accomplished that. The Fire will be sold.

I just came from the asus tf300 16gb. i liked it but the unit felt too 'fragile'. when i would flex it a little you could feel it give and i didn't like that in a $380 tablet. i traded it back to best buy within the 30day period and got the galaxy tab2 10.1 and must say, best decision. very fast and sturdy build. i feel like i have a device that is worth the money i paid for.
Hi, I got my Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 yesterday and I love it! I was thinking of buying either an Acer Iconia A510 or the Asus TF300, but read about some problems with the A510. I didn't really consider the GT2 since it is 'only' a dual-core. Then I started thinking about what I wanted a tablet for, which is mostly browsing, spotify and some videos/movies. When I saw the GT2 screen I was sold, really really beautiful and I haven't noticed the sluggishness some reviewers talk about. I should probably mention though that in The Netherlands the GT2 is actually quite a bit cheaper than the Asus TF300: 350 euro's (438 dollars) and 400 euro's (500 dollars) respectively.
Hi, my name's Jim. This is my first tablet and I must say, I'm very impressed - especially for the price paid (£199). Currently using this alongside my HTC Rezound. I've still not rooted it yet as I haven't had any reason too (I rooted my old HTC Sensation XL before I'd even left the store that I bought it from lol). Everything seems to be working great. Wi-Fi is a little sketchy but it still receives packets nice and quickly.
I'm a great fan of ROM flashing so hopefully development for our device will pick up quickly.
I was surprised to see that someone had already ported CM9 to our tablet!
Anyway, here's my "hi" to all you folks and hopefully we can all help to make our badass tablet even better!
Thanks,
Jim

Sooo many devices and just picked up this unit at Costco while I was in the US for $238 incl oem pouch.
For tablets, I'm sticking with this size form factor. I have the asus tf101, 2 playbooks, touchpad (sold), ipad 3, amd various smartphones in my family.
This unit is snappy and easy to hold as well type. The playbook is nice too if you have a blackberry but there is really an insufficient amount of apps.
The ir remote is a big plus as I wasn't expecting to use it but when I played around with it, it was better than my harmony remote.
The screen is a bit on the bland side but at this price, can't really complain.
Wifi death hold on the lower left side is present but I just flip it around and have the speakers face up for typing.
If I want 10 inch, I rather use my netbook...more practical.
Picked up the 7" tab on Saturday to go along with my Galaxy Nexus and I can safely say I have finally retired my TF101. On stock this thing is smooth as hell and the battery lasts forever, and so far no random rebooted or sleep of deaths (check the tf101 forums). I got this tablet because it feels sturdy and looks good. Hope to get to know all you guys over the next however many years I use this tablet.
Also, on AOKP right now and even with no hardware acceleration and a hit in battery it may be worth it to continue having a stock ICS experience.

I already have galaxy Tab 10.1 around 6 month ago. And just next week, someone give me the new Galaxy Tab 2 - 10.1. Thinking to sell one of this item. Mind to ask which one is better to use ? thanks.

Got my Tab 2 7.0 a week ago....been on PCs forever, but brand new to tablets.
So far, so good. Got this primarily to use as an e-reader and mess-around machine on a long trip planned to Alaska.
Question- how exactly do I get movies onto this thing to watch on a flight?
thnx
Hello. Name is Scott. I'm a 36 year old father of two from Texas. I'm a professional glazier (Glass guy) and I worked for years as an installer at Custom Sounds here. I drive a Mercedes Benz and I'm very proud of it. Won a dozen or so trophies with it.
My first Droid was an HTC Hero. I wore that sucker out and then I got an Evo 4G. I pre-ordered it and was the first around to get one. I then switched to ATT and got an Infuse 4G. I still have it and love it. By the time another year goes by and I can get my upgrade I can just imagine what super awesome Samsung device I'll be able to buy.
Being an old school Unix guy from the 90's I just love the way Android is built. I have a vast knowledge of FreeBSD, Linux and OpenBSD. I might start creating things for Android, apps and such. I just don't have the time. Wife, kids and work keep me pretty tied up busy.
I'm glad we have such a good bunch of devs and users so far for the GT2. Good to be here.
new here!
Hi, i'm John. I'm from the Netherlands, 48 years of age and bought my first ever tablet 2 days ago. It's a Tab 2 10.1 with 16gb memory.
So far i'm very happy with it.
As i'm not afraid to experiment a little bit, i've searched the internet to see if there were allready custom roms for my tab. That's why i've landed on this forum
Found out the method to root my P5110 and that went flawlessly.
Then yesterday the clean rom was introduced by sgrant. I've flashed it and that went well also.
A big thanks to Weltwon en SGrant for their instructions on how to root my tab and install the custom rom.
One question: after i've flashed the custom rom, my tab says in the about device info that it's a P5113 instead of the P5110 it was originally. Could that cause any kind of problem?
I understand that the change of modelnumber is caused by flashing the rom from sgrant who build this on a P5113 model.
Grtz,
John

Should I Buy an 8.9?

Do you guys believe this device will get much love from ROM developers? I love to tinker with my devices and don't want to be stuck with something that has no development?
Opinions?
No one can answer this only you. It could be tomorrow or next year.. sorry
Right now I wouldn't, I've got it and it's just sitting there collecting dust till there is a rom. No Google on an Android tablet is absurd.
here's my take as a lay person
Most of the people who want hardcore development will opt for the slightly underpowered, but very capable, Nexus 7. While the Kindle fire HDX 8.9 offers marvelous hardware, with a top of the line display, it has a locked, and guarded bootloader, which will be tough to crack. While it has already been rooted, and their is safestrap, roms will be limited until the bootloader is cracked. Kernel flashing will obviously be impossible without this. The root capability opens the window, but the door is still closed. I have the 7", and I do enjoy flashing roms, customizing, and tinkering simply for the sake of learning, but I don't have lofty expectations of the devs. While they are wonderful, and make an uncalled for effort to make every device perform at it's peak, I cannot see a locked device getting an abundant amount of attention, when a similarly capable, same-gen piece of hardware came out offering exactly what you already want. You may need to look at other similarly priced 10" tablets, that offer the same hardware, or close, that can be unlocked with a simple click, rather than 100s of man hours, and a bit of hope.
I was going to purchase the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 but Office Depot had a great deal on the 7" Kindle Fire HDX. $179.99 plus you get a $20.00 gift card.

I've been side-loading my Google Apps, and I'm quite happy with mine so far. I say go ahead and get one. You can always return it within a month.
My advise is for you to buy it.
I already rooted it and, thanks to @andoidcowboy tutorial, i got all my google apps working.
I live outside US and I am able to stream all PRIME content (movies, series, etc) using some DNS...
Hardware is really awesome, tab is really comfortable... i just love the darn thing! only thing i regret is not buying the 64gb one...
If you want real custom ROM's like CyanogenMOD or SlimRom's, then keep looking elsewhere. Because Kindle isn't getting them ANYTIME soon.
If nobody can flash one of these ROM's on a current release of the Galaxy S4 AT&T phone then you can believe the HDX isn't going to be any better.
Only the first two releases of S4 can flash AOSP. Any S4 released in the last 2-4 months is screwed.
All I'm hoping for its maybe a stock rom debloated . Google play . And can still access my prime features

At this point no. Most Dev's want to go after the easier targets that do not have locked bootloaders. Amazon has no one to blame but themselves if they fail (again) with this device.
I was this close to buying one, but after using the Nexus 5 and seeing how life is so much easier with unlocked bootloader, I'm never going back to a device that is not a Nexus or GPE. If I'm going be someone's b****, it better come with more benefits than Amazon Prime.

I'm not sure Amazon failed in the past with their Kindle Fires. Failed in the eyes of Devs maybe but not to normal consumers.
Which apps are compatible with rooted Kindle fire HDX 8.9
Hi there!
I'm thinking about getting the kindle 8.9 for its awesome hardware, but I'm concerned about what apps are available? Assuming I root the device, can I side load ANY android app? Or only the handful that I see threads about on this forum? (e.g., google apps).
If I'm limited to a handful of apps that's probably a deal breaker.
Thanks in advance!

You can sideload. Some apps (like ones on Fdroid) need Root. The troublesome part is finding apks (Android version of installer file for app). You can use a back up tool on another device or search the net for apks (that are not Trojan/Virus modded).

I have Prime, so may hold it for a bit. If the Gtab 10.1 2014 drops in price (by at least $100) I'll get rid of this.

I kinda disagree on this.
I agree on the Devs hitting the easier targets, but going by the specs and the price I think it's fairly clear (happy to be proved wrong lol) that Amazon are selling the HDX's at minimal profit and are relying on revenue from sales of their wares through pushing it massively through the Kindle OS.
Amazon obviously know that an unlocked bootloader == user removing Amazon specific features == lost revenue for them.
If it does fail it won't be due to the locked bootloader, IMHO. Although, I do feel they blew 1 toe off by not at least giving you the option of using Google Services on it, many apps require this and they could still bombard us with Amazon goodies.
Maybe, on the logic above, they could have released an unlocked version for a premium, but I for one would not have considered the Kindle HDX, regardless of the specs, if the price was more than a Nexus 7 2013.

Why not? Literally every single kindle fire has a custom firmware or port to it. It seems like you're pulling this "kindles aren't getting custom roms" out of your ass.Hell, i've got kit-kat 4.4 running on the original kindle fire.
I think the company that makes the kindle Foxcon/Asus/LG or whoever should have released a cosemetically altered version and sell it as a GPE. I would gladly pay $50 more for a unsubsidized version that isn't locked down. From what I read, the HW meets or exceeds Apple products.

Little to no profit on the base models but they are getting more on the higher storage models. The real problem is that such powerful hardware is gimped by the OS locked to the device. Truly a waste. And it can fail by word of mouth as well. Folks ask the "techie" in the family what to get and this can easily be shot down as an option thanks to the lack of options. Everyone I know has a custom Rom or at least rooted on their hardware. Especially since they had me do it.

I couldn't decide to be fair, so I took the choice out of my hands and just gave the GF a choice of what to get me between the HDX and a Nexus 7.
She obviously chose the HDX for me and I can't say I'm disappointed.
I do have a Nexus 4 though so I can mod that to my hearts content. Her logic was why would I need 2 devices to do the same thing?
Fair call...

Would you recommend the kindle fire hdx over the nexus 7?

I really want to get this tablet but my only gripe with it is the lack of development support on this compared to the nexus 7 (no offence to anyone who works hard on this tablet). This will be my first tablet since the ipad 1st gen but i have had the razr hd and s4 which have had a lot of support for roms and customization. Would you recommend this tablet over the nexus 7?
edit: Kijiji has a blacklisted hdx fire 8.9 for $200 is it worth getting and will it still work if I can get google play store installed on it, or is it too good to be true?
I was bought the hdx7 for Christmas by my partner. I like my tech, but I think I would have rather had the nexus.
After about a week I got fed up with the carousel and amazon app store and the complete removal of google so I decided to give modding a go using some of the guides on this site.
I gotta say, If I had a nexus, I wouldn't have bothered modding it, but the Fire has been a fun, anger filled experience.
The 7 you can defo get google apps running on as mine runs perfectly well now, the 8.9, as I understand isn't as developed as the 7, but I'm sure I saw that people have rooted at least. Check about the forum

The hdx 7 and 8.9 are both about equal right now. You can do pretty much what you want with google apps. It's just that you will most likely lose some amazon apps and at least the amazon app store. With multiple "roms" or a script you can switch between stock amazon and gapps on the 7" but mostly it's not all perfect yet. However, many people are happy with the current state of "mostly works" and so we aren't seeing much new development. It's nice being able to use some of the amazon stuff... and the kindle hdx hardware is excellent.
A nexus 7 should not disappoint and will not be as much of a headache. One click root and full recovery options are definately luxuries we wish the kindle could be afforded. Not to mention real roms that can use the entirety of the storage of the device. When/if the Kindle is fully sorted out, I'd say it will be better because of the hardware... until then, there is a lot of painful work around.
yes I would, the hdx has a snapdragon 800 in it while the 7 has only the old APQ8064 ,the GPU part is quite a deference.
and hdx will have original android sooner or later.
i have both and latest iPad Air
i received a gift this year to spend on tech and got an iPad Air, a Nexus 7 and a 7 Fire HDX. (i could get both N7 and HDX for price of iPad Mini) I'm pretty much an apple fan-boy (i've built 3 or 4 hackintoshes, have a MacBook Pro, wife has an MBP Air, Apple TV, and airport's around the house for whole house music). i love the iPad Air - by far the finest piece of quality tech of the 3, but i seldom take it out of the house.
to run around with, i'm finding myself reaching for the N7. So far, I've had none of the QC issues that some sites are reporting. the stock interface i'm finding more useful than even the iPad Air, with the widgets and such. the OS is still not as bullet-proof as iOS, nor quite as smooth. but, it's come a long way from the first couple of years.
the HDX also feels like a quality piece of gear. the guts and specs are amazing. i really like the feel of the device, love the screen, the sound, and even like the button placement that others have complained about. i love amazon (have a prime membership) but FIREOS sucks. it's just not as intuitive and useful of an interface. the only person i'd recommend this to is someone who is totally new to tablets, only wants to view content, and is not tech davy. with Mayday it's basically the perfect device for my 77 year old mom. i'm going to hold on to my HDX for another month or so in hopes of a better custom ROM, but if nothing comes up it's going up for sale on craigslist.
if i could have only one, i'd have a really hard time parting with the N7. for the price, i think it's the best deal going.
I currently own both of these devices. The HDX beats the nexus 7 in sheer hardware pound for pound. PLUS the nexus 7 is plagued with touchscreen and wifi issues that have pissed me off pretty badly. The HDX with the google experience launcher and the playstore is fantastic. None of the general lag I got on the nexus 7. None of the hardware issues.
I get some backlight coming through the edges on both devices though. However the nexus 7 is worse.
The HDX has some problems with some apps.
The nexus 7 you can install many custom roms.
I hope this helps a bit. I do want to say one lats thing though, the HDX feels SOOO much smoother. I can literally feel the lag when tabbing through things on the nexus 7, the hdx has none of that. That's not to say that the nexus 7 is horribly laggy, it's just noticeable to me.

Fire 7 / HD 8 Refresh [Spring 2017] - No HDX Replacement in Sight

https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/17/...let-refresh-release-date-pricing-kids-edition
It seems as though Amazon has decided to bow out of the "higher end" market, which is a shame. They've decided instead to stick with the lower price, high volume market to get more people into their ecosystem. At the time that the HDX first came out, it was actually relatively inexpensive for a tablet with its specs. It's one of the reasons that I bought it in the first place. If they had built it with micro SD storage, it would have been darn near perfect. I guess I'll just have to hold onto my old HDX 7 until it rolls over and dies.
I think Android tablet market as a whole is dead. Amazon just interest to sell ecosystem.

Well, that shows how little attention I've paid to the tablet market. The last time I really paid any attention was over 3 years ago when I purchased my HDX 7.
Honestly I actually pre-ordered the new Fire HD 8, because my second tablet: the Nexus 7 2013 is somehow stuck in a unfixable bootloop (it sucks but I did make a recent backup) I didn't want to be stuck with one tablet again, so I thought that the 2017 Fire HD 8's specs was as close as possible (on paper) for the same price I paid for my HDX 7. So I'll definitely tell you guys my verdict in about a week of everyday use.

I think the likely verdict is understood by those familiar with both devices. They do not play in the same space aside from vendor, approximate screen size and base operating system (Android derivatives). Beyond that night and day.
