doministry,
Very unlikely. I don't see Windows Mobile going anywhere soon.
Cheers.
lol also note this was not from MS, but from some other online magazine whose members carry either iphones or blackberries lol
LOL not a chance. I believe in the ZunePhone or WinPhone more than this.
Edward is a bit of a nut-job. almost all his stories irritates me
loool @ the coments of the story
headline should read "Microsoft denies killing WinMo, despite moron predictions."

winmin is just a core dude, not a full os, if it was, then windows 7 wont be on dvd
i can never picture an os with a neat gui and sexy animations at 25MB on the smartphone market, maybe when im old n grey

Who knows but currently I don't believe
Mobile hardware will ever = desktop one.
Lol. Why you talkin' bout 25 or 150 MB?!? 16 GB on your phone is not really anything special TODAY. Think about where we've been 2 or 3 years ago - 1 GB was quite good. -> In two years, our mobiles will have 256 GB. Why would you care if Win 7 (or 8, by then) uses 9 or 10 GB?
Both of those articles are fluff and full of speculation. It sounds like an anti-MS article. Typical journalism where one writes a sensationalized article that has no substance behind it. Why is it that Android and WebOS can start from scratch and gain market share, but WM7 can't ?
I do believe that MS has it's work cut out for it though. In general media, WM barely gets mentioned in the same breath as other stuff on the market (Apple, Android, WebOS. Blackberry). However, of all those companies, Microsoft has the most resources and tricks up it's sleeve. It has the leverage of the other markets it dominates such as Exchange, Windows desktop, Zune (not dominate ), XBox, Bing/Yahoo, etc (Apple has Mac -> iPod -> iTunes-> iPhone). I see no basis on why MS would just quit and give up...hell, they just bought out Yahoo search!

I think MS has learned it's lesson to NOT put a desktop OS into a small mobile device (they've been there, done that ). A mobile device needs an OS specifically designed for mobile devices. Maybe some things "under the hood" can be similar to make it easy for developers. MS would be smart at integrating Zune and WM7, which I think they're doing.
OMG! Windows Mobile is dead!!!!
LOL...
(in case you can't tell this is said in a sarcastic tone)
lmao if Windows Mobile was to expire, then Windows Mobile 7 and 6.5 wouldn't have even be announced.

Well I'm not claiming anything,
however you miss the point - the article says "IN 2 YEARS"
so 6.5 and 7 are now, so not related.
In business nobody quits or stops anything immediately in one day,
it's a long process.
We are talking about microsoft here. a company that will lose money just to keep there place (and try and make it to number one) in a market.
i got one word : XBOX
have a look how much money they have lost to keep it on the market, and now it has a big part (although the xbox360 will end up last in sells. they still pumping money into it and having the name recognized).
The thing with WM is that microsoft did not see it as important till the iphone came out and now they are spending alot of time and money on the os and apps(6.5 pushing it more into the main market, and seven putting it up with the top user friendly os).
I don't want to see Microsoft fail. I see more and more Mac users and iPhone owners at my school, everyday.
I just tired on fighting with this piece of crap.
In fact, I just surrender and just leave all the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform behind.
The X2 is a marvell Hardware device, but it's Software support it's a shame. I even think that SE Android support will be the same: low quality updates, no information.
I swear i'll never buy or it recommend a Sony Ericsson product again.
On the other hand, the Windows Mobile platform is really outdated and unsupported. Low quality apps, even for Twitter and Facebook (Twikini is the best out there and really is a shame compared to the iPhone or BlackBerry), no more Skype. Do I really need to tell you the Internet browser experience? Windows Mobile has NO future at all.
When the iPhone appeared in 2007, it was a shame operating system, we all agree. But, in 2010, iOS 4 is from another planet. There's no more excuses. Everyone should see it.
I'm affraid that Windows Phone 7 will take a couple years just to catch the progress on the Apple iOS. It doesn't have Copy/Paste, no multitasking, so...
I'm selling this piece of crap X2 that never got to work at a basic quality level, I'm jumping for good of the Windows Mobile world and I'm buying an iPhone 4 in the coming days. No need to find stupid arguments in defense of WM, a piece of crap operating system in our days (2010, not 2000 or 2002).
Cheers and sorry for my english (of course! an Spanish X2 user that never got his desired MR2 GENERIC_ES Update: f**k Sony Ericsson.

Holy ****!
If you are on MR1 the experience is miserable indeed!
And WM 6.5.2 was bad.....
Pity because MR2 and WM 6.5.3 is a heaven tu use.
Much better interface in every area, modern and smooth.
X2 itself on MR2 is smooth too including great screen sensitivity.
There are issues of course but I would not like to have any other OS...
iPhone 4 may be great but it's limitations are too much for me. And it's boring.....
As for Windows future I think you may be wrong.
WP7 looks really promising.
Good luck anyway!!!!

I'm sorry, but I already using MR2 Spanish Vodafone, without personalization.
I just reset the phone at the end of the calibration screen, and I've installed all cabs from US MR2 ROM manually. The ROM is faster, ok, but stability problems remains.
And also, MR2 not resolve the primary problem with Windows Mobile: stupid old, pointless and bad mobile operating system. That's why I'm switching. I could buy an HD2 or other WinMo Device, but why?

Sorry but I don't get "stupid, old, pointless OS".
For me WM is the most sensible OS.
Maybe you just don't like it? There's nothing like what you described in WM 6.5.3.
Besides some small issues with stability.

Well, this is just a debate, don't worry. I appreciate your help.
IMHO wm is the best os for mobile devices, it is flexible and it has sofisticate software. You have to approach like a computer, a PC, where hardware is different from software. Apple makes hw and sw, Blackberry makes hw and sw. Sonyericsson makes hw (the project?) and Microsoft makes the os. When Htc made HD2 (capacitive) or Diamond2 (resistive) or others, it used wm and made great devices. If x2 doesn't work the cause is se. I had a lot of wm devices but only x2 is such a disaster. I only hope for a good chef

A phone is not a PC. You control a phone with your fingers and with your hands, and maybe with a small keyboard. But, pointers, stylus and other devices are outdated. The capacitive display are an very high innovation, and it will be present on every mobile device on the market.
That's why Windows Mobile fails, and that's why is discontinued and Windows Phone 7 was created. A 'front skin' update (like WM 6.5.3) isn't just good enough.
On other hand, WM6.5 could be a good operating system, but... there's no apps. All developers had go to other platforms. WM has no future.
You can see Skype dropping all support for WM. The only 'decent' app for Twitter, Twikini, had no see Updates since December... That's 7 months ago! The Facebook app has also outdated.
The only developer that has some interest on WM is the own Microsoft, updating Office Mobile to... a 'new' version that trully doesn't contain any new features. Even, the Windows Live suite for mobile is really outdated and always worked really bad. Instead, MS prefer to develop a new Windows Live official suite for the iPhone.
Windows Mobile has no future. It's the true, and all we must accept it. No more devices will appear with this OS. And now, we doesn't have a good number of applications. It's time to go.
Cheers.
Just thought I would drop by and say hello
Since my move to the X10, I am very happy indeed
They achieved root this week and this is going to open up a world of goodies
As far as IOS 4 is concerned, LOL! Don't be fooled by the Apple advertising campaign. Just google "iPhone security issues" and you will see what I mean. Besides, they just added features that should have been there in the first place! Nothing new, but they sure make the world think "Oh gosh! look at this shiny new phone! It's got all these cool new features!"
What a freaking joke!

But they have done it, finally. So, what are the complaints now?
A really honest question: What feature is missing on the iOS now that we REALLY use day by day?
You can say:
- There's no 3G Videocall... I don't have ANY contacts with a video phone, and even, the first ones sure will be iPhone 4 owners. And, by the time that videocall be a REALLY standard, it will be the APPLE Standard.
- There's no Bluetooth Send and Receive files... Why? We have Internet, Mail, and the last time that I sent a file via BT was 2 or 3 years ago. BT transfer is unreliable, slow and unnecessary.
- SD Card, why? There are a 16GB and a 32GB version iPhone 4. Probably it will be even a 64GB version on the future.
- Removable battery, why?
And that's it.
Really... There's no more excuses. A year or two ago it really was. But not today.
Even, Windows Phone 7 will appear with a lot of cons: No Copy/Paste, No multitasking... I insist: it will take a couple of years to catch iOS and even Android. And, of course, there's an App Market that it will no show really interest: Skype dropped support, Mozilla too.
And even, the most important and the most relative thing to this thread: Apple really CARES about the Software support on these products. Users of 2008 iPhone 3G can Upgrade to iOS4, a two years ago phone.
What happened to the Xperia X1?
What is happening to us? We can even use officialy the accelerometer on our phones.
Some we're complaining about even cannot upgrade to MR2 by a clean language-localized version.
Do you think that the iPhone cannot notify a received SMS? Please...
This war is over. There's a winner, iOS, and even contenders, but they're still fighting: Android, BlackBerry, even WP7 in the future.
Windows Mobile? nope. It's dead, really.
Cheers.
hahahaahhaha

Hahaha!
These are quite essential things on my device.
You say a bit of a bull**** here mate, sorry.
Bluetooth? It's marvellous. Instead of stupid sending email (?!)
or beeing forced to use iTunes I send files Phone -> PC or PC -> Phone. The best way.
Somebody is NEXT TO ME - so why the **** I should send EMAIL when
I can immediately send whatever by BT?! Funny...
SD card - well, first I can transfer content to any device without PC or whatever. I can also extract all the files from it even if my device is broken!!
And use the card for multiple devices, man that's easy to understand.
Removable battery?! ****. So when my iPhone battery is broken
I have to SEND my personal device to the company and WAIT? A joke?
Also when it freezes completely - no way to turn it off...
I can replace it with new...
Buy your iPhone, probably WM is just not for you.
WM is still superior to any iCrap anyway.
I suggest you another key to read: Microsoft has won the battle with Apple in computer war for a reason that isn't "oh great!" but... cheap. Apple has success with smartphones for a reason that isn't "oh cool!" but... marketing. Iphone (a good device anyway) has caught the market of cellphones users, not professional user who prefers to sync outlook or use a portable word processor.
Smartphones ARE computers, little computers, if you don't understant this one it's difficolt to explain the rest. Mouse and pens are everything but outdated, I makes graphical works and it would be difficult to use... fingers to work (...waiting for the Iphone with physical keys )
Anyway, it's important you have found a device suitable for your needs, the perfect one doesn't exists.
Bye
P.S.: Apple was not born with Iphone, it is as old as Microsoft and they are old partners so don't think Windows is dying...
I guess its all just based on preferences
because in my opinion iphones are ****. hardware is outdated, UI is ugly, and phone is virtually locked (memory, kill switch). yeah it may have a Capacitive screen which supports multi-touch, but why? multi-touch only forces you to hold the device with two hands (ex. pinch zoom hold phone in one had use other hand to pinch) which i i would just prefer a double tap, plus the Capacitive screen requires you to use the fat part of your greasy finger (yes my hands get sweaty) where the resistive touch screen allows you to use both the fat part of your finger, or you fingernail/stylus for more accuracy. as for web browsers, according to some test i just ran (which included 8 browsers, safari, IE, skyfire, fennec, android 2.2 browser, uZard web p, opera mini 5, and opera mobile 10) safari tested almost as badly as IE and fennec (opera and android 2.2 browsers performed the best) and once more iphone will NEVER support flash, and they act like HTML5 is the future and is all you really need, but hell i still play farmvill, bloons tower defense, and watch youtube videos with skyfire with practicly no lag. Oh and the lack of hardware buttons on these modern phones... why?
moving on to windows mobile 7, looks very promising. app integration is well planned, the hardware on these phones will blow aways iphones, the panoramic UI is just damn sexy. trust me it'll be great, from what i saw (youtube videos) it will be an iphone killer
and as for your accelerometer issues you may want to check out this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681982 if you keep your phone, it fixes some of the bugs sorry for typing so much i have a lot to say. when ever i have an issue with winmo i find a fix, if something is wrong with the iphone they are stuck with it until the next update.
It may be just me, but I absolutely don't get this thread. Jolo_, if you've decided that you want to switch your mobile OS, fine, but why do you have to bother writing anything in here? You think you'll enlighten us by your opinion? There are many different ones and what makes you think yours is the best? Suit yourself and let everyone else suit themselves. Also, stick to the people that share your opinion, who we're obviously not. I believe there was much more than enough pointless arguing all over the Internet, it's time to let it go. Yet again, it might be just me...
totally agreed. sony [email protected] is a crap. sigh...
See what you want to see.
If it's not dead yet, Windows Mobile life ends in a three or four months, when WP7 arrives.
Then, all our crappy WM phones will became useless, pointless (no new applications, no new developers). And gets worse: impossible to re-sell because NOBODY will want a Windows Mobile phone.
Think about it: we even haven't HardSPL for the X2 yet. And of course, this is never going to happen because the X2 is so locked that anyone isn't really working on it.

everybody who reads this needs to first watch this video http://www.break.com/index/iphone-4-vs-htc-evo.html trust me it will make you laugh i guarantee it! and will hopefully settle some differences
I'm fairly new to smartphones, having had the Tilt2 for only about six months after about four years with a Treo 650, but one thing seems to be increasingly true about Windows Mobile phones: If you want the greatest capabilities, you just have to get an iPhone, not a Windows phone.
It just drives me crazy that all the good apps are iPhone. Deposit checks to Chase Bank without deposit slips or going to the bank using your iPhone camera AND THE CHASE DEPOSIT APP FOR iPHONE! Netflix, play movies on iPhone or trailers on Windows. AT&T U-verse download and play movies...on your iPhone. These are three fairly new ones that come to mind, but it is this way for seemingly everything. Even TCM's new movie schedule app is for iPhone, Droid, and Blackberry...Blackberry for crying out loud...but not Windows.
It's another 18 months before we can upgrade for a reasonable price from our two HTC Tilt2 phones to iPhones. If Microsoft wants to increase its market share, it needs to offer subsidies to developers. Windows 7 Mobile is not the answer...we don't buy computers for the sake of the operating systems. It's for the programs that run on the OS. Isn't it the same with smart phones? They all make calls and take bad photos. It's the other stuff that is the difference.
Am I wrong?
Youre absolutely right, however with over 300,000 downloads of the windows phone 7 SDK already, I think the next version of windows will have plenty of apps to enjoy. Microsoft is also wanting developers to release a free demo of all software, so we can check out any app to make sure we want to buy it. With the integration of XBOX Live, playing games online with other windows 7 users and the focus on gaming, WP7 is going to be awesome. UI definitely looks great and there are rumors that the day the marketplace opens up there will be over 100,000 aps submitted and available. Things really are looking up for microsoft phones. I know I'm getting one!
MPlayer: will let you stream hulu and bbc and others.
Movies for rental: Check out Amazon Unbox. It's part of amazons video service, where you can rent and buy movies and tv shows. You can have the settings set to automatically download a mobile version of the movie or show you are getting. Though I've never tried it with a rental. I usually just buy tv shows for 99 cents. Downside is it is not streaming, but download to pc and then transfer to your phone. Another option is to use
It's true that some of the very new apps will probably never see a WinMo 6.x port since the platform is switching to WP7, but calling it an "application desert" is a stretch. I have over 100 different programs installed to my phone, with everything from musical instrument simulators to various business tools and games. There's a huge number of free programs as well as a lot of high quality paid-for programs. Check the "apps worth installing on the tp2" for a good sample of the free applications you can get.
bowserb, as you said, you are new to smartphones, so with a lot of respect i want to share something, my experience with smartphones is a little more than yours, motorola q, blackberry, htc 8125, samsung epix, samsung blackjack, htc touch and know i have a tilt2, and beleive me its much more phone than the iphone
windows mobile and iphone are two differents worlds, windows is more for professionals and business people, focussed in getting the job done, excellent in word, excel, pp, (create and edit), emails capabilities, outlook and exchange sync, etc, etc, then as a second priority is the music, videos, etc,etc
on the other hand iphone is the phone for teenagers, to play, to think they have the ultimatte machine (go to a high school and teel me if dont see al least a hundred of them in 110 kids), you need aplications for everything, let me explain, when you are to compare a phone you have to do it from the box, which one is more capable without going to itunes or marketplace, there the iphone dont have a chance, in others words if you dont jailbreak the iphone its almost useless, my sister and my brother have them, so i know what im talking about
if you want real games and real tv, you have xbox, playstation and a flat screen
MS doesn't care about its market share for Windows Mobile 6. Mobile is a tiny part of MS's business, completely insignificant compared to sales of PC operating systems, Office, etc. It remains to be seen how much MS will even care about Windows Phone 7. With WP7, its possible they can make money off the mobile market like Apple and Google have, but that remains to be seen. It would require a whole new level of support and financial commitment than MS has shown in the past. MS has proved they can make money from a new market (XBOX), if they see it as a viable potential opportunity and throw enough resources at it. But if they go into half-hearted, they will fail now that Apple and Google already have a substantial hold on the market.
Yes, commercial developer support for WM6 is drying up with WP7 coming in the next couple months. But there is still a huge user supported base, many will argue. If you want more support from MS and other commercial developers, its not going to happen. They have all moved on.
The underpinnings of WM6 is just too old for developers to make backwards compatible applications. All the WM products up to version 6 are based on the same Windows CE code from 2000. So you can see why there is little desire to make an application for this outdated OS, when there is a modern updated version coming out in a few months.
And don't forget about Android. The iPhone is all the rave for the uninformed. But if you want a OS that has a huge user community, and tons more customization and function than the iPhone, then Android is what you want. Unless MS can really turn things around, I'm almost certainly going Android for my next phone.
Since you want an Iphone so bad.....
Here is my two cents on an iPhone.
Yes, I agree with you it has a lot of nifty apps, in various categories. On of the other side, a "phone" is for making calls. I have 3 cousins, and a few family friends who have Iphones, they hate the "phone" part of it because it drops calls, and lags on the phone screen severly. I know many people who have smartphones who send internet to their iPhone's to do what you were talking about with the Chase banking things and stuff. The new iPod Touch has a camera and mic if I'm not mistaken.
My dad used to be subscribed to a PocketPC magazine, and they ranked iPhone top of the line for apps, but worst for phone usage. Even worse than regular phones (ie non-smartphones).
Whatever you want to do is up to you though.
App desert?
Thanks for the comments, guys. I had no idea that WM6.5 was an update of Windows CE. Last time I used that OS was on a Casio PDA...a really long time ago. (Note for the younger crowd: A PDA was smartphone without the phone.) About Windows 7 mobile--will I have to buy a new phone to get it, or will there likely be an upgrade available from HTC?
MS Office. I can't imagine iPhone Contacts being a clumsier, more limited application than on the Tilt2, where contacts show up multiple times and all with m next to the name. Word and Excel are OK, but I almost never use them, even though they are indispensable on my desktop computer.
Dropped calls on iPhone. I suspect that is an AT&T problem, not iPhone. My Tilt2 drops calls all the time, as did the Treo 650 before it and the Sony/Erikson before that. Isn't that the reason people are clamoring for iPhone on Verizon?
iPhone is for teenagers? How do you know I'm not one? And even though I'm not, why should they have all the fun? No I don't really care about music and movies on my phone, but the ever growing list of useful and practical apps for the iPhone would seem to make that platform the choice of all age groups!
Anyway, this reply is mostly rhetorical. In 18 months, it will be time to survey the smartphone landscape.

MS doesn't care about its market share for Windows Mobile 6. Mobile is a tiny part of MS's business, completely insignificant compared to sales of PC operating systems, Office, etc. It remains to be seen how much MS will even care about Windows Phone 7.

They better start caring, mobile phones are going to be replacing PC's for many folks in the future.

WP7 will be for new phones only, and an official upgrade is out of the question. The Tilt2/TP2 does not meet the stiff hardware requirements mandated by WP7. From the processing power all the way to the hardware button layout, it doesn't meet the new WP7 standards. Wouldn't be surprised if the smart folks on XDA will get some form of hacked version to work on Rhodium, but propably won't be quite the same experience as on a phone that runs WP7 natively.

Even the high end HTC HD2 will not get an official upgrade to WP7, it has been said by Microsoft and HTC....
If the people on here can do it...that's another story...
Here anyone that will get involved in building a custom WP8 ROM for current WP7 devices can post their results.
Many of us know it's possible and that MS is just bullshhh**** us with the "no hw support" thing.
DFT and other teams, hope you will try to give us what MS does not.
Thank you for your other hard work.
Will there really be WP8 for WP7 devices? From what I read it does not seem to be the case.
This will be possible just wait.My sources tell me.
wp8 - from Vickee4u India
i have been using windows phone since 2008 ( O2 phone , Then i have Purchased Samsung i200, now i am using Samsung focus.
now this is my last windows phone not at all satisfied with MS policies, i think because of this policy Nokia is badly affected
they have lunch n900, which has not good response world wide as windows phone 8 is going to be launch next or two month later
Upgrade policy must be 3yrs from date of manufacturing of the product.
i request MS to make wp8 compatible with 1ghz processor phone & 512 ram samsung focus the hot cake phone of windows which made windows most popular in it

You've been using Windows Phone since 7 years before they released their first mobile (Pocket PC)? The Windows-CE kernel wasn't even developed until after the mid 90's

You may want to check your facts on that....... I am no expert but I know Windows CE devices (HPC pre Pocket PC) were tied to Cell Phones.
I know cause I played around with a few back in the Analog days. Before the Ipaq was a hit (PPC2002).
My Audiovox ran Pocket PC 2002SE (edit.....on a fact check it was 2003SE oops sorry)
But heck my Casio BE300 WinCE 3 ( pre WinCE.Net) could be used as a phone back in the day with the use of a CF plug in unit........I miss my little upstart of a Pocket PC ass kicker
IF you see WP8 for WP7 devices, there will be issues. It wont support the fulll feature set. A lot of things wont run at full performance and new WP8 games that are designed for dual core phones will run poorly if at all.
Never mind the fact, after release, unless some betas show up, it will take time to get the drivers right, and dependong on hardware. So, the HD2 might get it first followed by a HD7, etc. At least mine (Verizon HTC Trophy) will be last. So if your counting on a update for your phone right after WP8 is released, I would not get your hopes up to high. It will totaly depend on your model phone too, some phones are still not even cracked for full unlocks yet, never mind an entire OS from the ground up
My contract has been up for a long time now, I even have a credit towards a new phone, I'll just get a new phone in fall time, as the possable feature/performance loss from a POSSABLE upgrade might be too much.
I AM HAVING SAMSUNG OMNIA W OULD LIKE TO HAVE WP8 FOR THIS GREAT PHONE
by SOMKLL
I miss an option in the poll "I'll most likely get free WP8 device as a developer"
I already received two Lumias 800 for free
Don't count on it, guys. Look at WP7, the only phone to unofficially get WP7 was the HD2 and that only happened because the HD7 is basically an HD2 with different buttons.
The source is closed, it can't be recompiled to work on any device. Unless there is a very similar device which runs WP8, it won't happen. And that won't happen because WP8 all have hardware 2 years newer than WP7.

I'm sure where there is a will there is a way as always. API's and PID's can easily be integrated. I have not seen RT yet but I'm sure they will have WHQL enabled so all is needed is a hack to disable this and drivers can be built.
Oh good luck writing those drivers. The best luck be to get hands on WP8 ROMs for current/1st gen devices.
Ms had been testing wp8 on older HTC devices which showed up onlogs leaked on the internet.
And do you have access to that ROM?
I know everybody hurts Microsoft for the decision that WP7 devices cannot upgrade to WP8.
But I trust Microsoft. Everything shows, the company want the best for his new system.
And WP8 have some new functions that really require new hardware. And because there is a lot of function that require new drivers for almost every piece of the existing hardware, I think it's not good business to anyone.
And as a user...Compare to other platforms I can say we are all received the maximum.
And my message to lumia users....Phones lifecycle are very short. It could be happen anytime, a phone's lifecycle reaches it's end as happend now.
+1 gamo!!! As consumers we the people have driven MS to this conclusion. Forcing the hand to say sacrifice the current lineup for stability because people want hardware over usability. My biggest gripe with android is stability and my 'twist the knife' question to all my android friends is, "How many times a week does you phone crash or force close?" and watch them squirm. My Trophy has NEVER (pause) NEVER, EVER, for over 1 year year of heavy use, had a crash or close or reboot. I would rather keep my phone stable and functional than go to crapshoot code--android.

Can this be done?
Could you install Windows 8 instead of Windows Phone 8 on a Nokia 920?
No can do on a Nokia 920? Will there be a smartphone that will have the hardware required by Windows 8 to make this possible?
I do understand that using some actual windows applications on a phone will be tedious and sometimes difficult. Its more a "Can and could if I wanted to" kind of thing for me.
BUT
Having Visual Studios, Win SCP and a lot of other software linked to the always on 4g internet...
in my pocket....
always available...
in that ooohhh so sexy red
I can't wait for that phone...
I have been able to do most of what I need to on my Samsung Vibrant. ES File Explorer has an AWESOME ftp option (and LAN!!)
But the screen is WAY to small to have code visible and a keyboard. Remote desktop has its obvious drawbacks, but I've used it.
Any thoughts questions of comments?
Thanks for reading my babble =P
Nick
ahhh, here comes the confusion from Microsoft's naming scheme....

No. There's no desktop on win phone 8. The ARM version won't support VS, even on tablets, though you won't be able to install it. Windows 8 RT(ARM) will only be available preinstalled on tablets.
If you've been satisfied with Android, and use features like a file explorer, keep in mind that many will NOT be available on win pho 8. If your existing phone is too small, consider the Galaxy S 3, Note, or other larger phones that are available on the market.
That's a shame! I had hopes that this would some how be possible.
Not even a modded version?
I have been following phone news like mad for 2 years. Pretty much since I got my vibrant. The S3 is AMAZING, but its android. There are things that I don't like about android, mainly fragmentation and its on going war with Apple.
I have had enough bad experiences with Android, for example :
1/3 into my 2 year contract with tmo and my Vibrant's USB port got water damage and I couldn't ODIN back to stock to install newer versions of Android. Also couldn't get the device fixed. Luckily I was able to do a factory reset every month or so as android just got useless. Frozen up at the unlock screen happens ALL the time, and usually happens with in a minute of reboot and isn't fixed until I do a reset. This didn't happen all the time, but always when I needed the device the most. For example, you have to reboot the device to get the GPS working after turning the option on, and of course BAM, phone keeps locking up. There has been times where I couldn't get to the dial a phone number screen, couldn't get visual voicemail to work and had a very important voice mail to check. took me 30 minutes to hear a 1 minute message! Than the time I was up till 8 am trying to get the phone to work because it was my only alarm clock and I couldn't get to the screen where I changed the time the alarm went off. All these issues are a result of having to root and mod my phone to get a newer maybe more secure version of android. I don't see a windows device having these problems.
Also, I am not a huge fan of Apple, but Apple has set itself up to deliver more complete experience's because of the control they have over there ecosystem. Apple TV's printers networks scanners and all that other stuff will just work with their phone. Well, I've been a user of windows for 15 years. Its what I know. I've been a windows developer for those 15 years. I don't see Google being able to provide that full functionality, I am not a fan of apple at all, and I think that Microsoft can get closer than Google. As it is, there isn't many devices you can plug into a windows system that windows wont be able to just start using. You know, this isn't windows 98 and older video games I'm trying to run.... lol
It really will be a shame if there is no way to get the desktop environment on my smartphone. Even more a shame when I could probably get a device compatible with Ubuntu's mobile stuff, and all the goodies that come with that. Wine, and now even Steam!
I don't know if this news sways my opinion of Windows Phone 8. I still crave the 920. My plan is to go out on Black Friday and get a top of the line device with full insurance for as cheap as possible. My next 2 years are not going to be a repeat of my first 2 years with a smartphone. November is still a few months off, and there is plenty of timed for other devices. Maybe even a decent smartphone with a Qwerty keyboard!!
I realize this post has kinda dragged on... sorry! And thanks for the replies!
[EDIT] The note is a great idea, but absolutely not an option. Douchtooths are the bane of my existence. And if I can't FTP into a server on a windows phone, why is Microsoft even bothering?
Nick
I have to say that it's unfortunate that you haven't had good experiences with android. I would think that the many devs on this site would have cooked up something that would fit your needs better, but if you broke your USB, then I guess you're kind of stuck with what you got. It's definitely true that android is very rough, especially with stock roms.
Win pho is there because it's targeting a different segment now. Win pho used to be something that was there to provide a feature rich experience. After WP7, "metro" looks
and interface idiot proofing has taken higher priority over actual functionality. As it is now WP8 has the least functionality when compared to Android and iOS, though it is supposed to be the easiest to use.
I would personally wait until a while after the lumias come out, and make sure that they do what you want before buying them. There are stories of people who bought WP7 phones thinking that they would have the features of WP 6.5. Those are stories of some very, very dissatisfied customers.
P.S.
No WINE on ARM ever. Remember, Wine Is Not an Emulator.
