Note 3 overheating and wont turn on - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently got a Note 3 from a friend thats purchased a Nexus 6P instead.
Reason being that his note 3 sometimes turns on but overheats and drains the battery within minutes, or it doesnt turn on at all and a weird clicking noise is heard from the speaker.
It also overheats when charging while the phone is off.
He purchased a new battery thinking thats the problem but the same problem persists, now when I got it I was thinking that maybe I can do some more troubleshooting and see if there is a way of fixing it.
Any help is appreciated.

Did you try download mode?

I tried that, problem is that it doesn't turn on, the display is black and only some poping noises can be heard when battery is inserted.
I got it to power up once but it didn't take long for it to drain battery and turn off.

Try to disassemble your phone. Check motherboard. Look for symptoms of short circuit. I`ve got note 3 for 2 years. It`s easy phone to repair.

Okay so I have been experimenting a little with it.
After opening it up I could not find any evidence of water damage or short circuit.
What I have found out so far is.
1. It starts up when plugged in and charging. (after it starts up I can unplug the charger and it stays on just fine.)
2. If I turn it off it won't turn back on again unless plugged in.
3. When on it overheats even when idle and screen off.
4. When charging (even if turned off) it overheats/feels extremely warm to the touch.
5. Vibration doesn't work, but could be my my fault as I removed the motherboard, will have to open it up again and see if I missed something.
The phone has been dropped several times and has some damage although not on the screen, just the sides.
So if I can get it fully working I might just buy a new housing for it.

Flashing stock didn't help, still the same problem.
1. Won't turn on unless plugged in and charging.
2.Overheating.
Any ideas? Thinking it can be the USB port maybe, but would it overheat like that if it was just the port?

Well make sure the replacement battery has full charge....and retry ...also insert your battery into another phone and check if its chaging....because usually the phone starts up unless the battery has gone bad....if the phone doesn't switch on...I guess its a hardware issue...which I highly doubt....make sure the wall socket is functional as well....these are little things that could be triggering this...so check everything. ..good luck

[Q] LG G2 not charging at all!

Hi all,
I just bought an LG G2 (D802 international unlocked version) and the behavior when plugging in the charger cable is very strange:
When I plug in any charger (tried 4 different ones with different cables incl. stock), the phone is not charging.
BUT, there are a few strange things happening:
1. On the lock screen it shows "Charging"
2. In the settings menu under the battery menu it shows "not charging" (this is different from being unplugged, then it shows something like "discharging")
3. Sometimes the popup comes up when I plug it in, but not always.
3. When I turn the phone off and plug the cable in, the display lights up (also the LED) and it shows the "charging" battery symbol.
IN ANY CASE, THE PHONE BATTERY IS NOT CHARGING!
Here is what I tried so far:
- Used 4 different chargers & cables
- Tried to charge via USB
- Did a factory reset
Nothing helped so far.
I suppose that its a hardware failure, but maybe someone has a different suggestion/solution?
Only thing i can recommend is maybe do a factory reset to see if that corrects it which i doubt it will. Other then that i would have the phone warrantied then.
If its a software issue then that is at the kernel level. I would assume its a hardware issue though

I got a replacement unit, it was a hardware issue.
The same problem i am facing with my G2 Sprint LS980 and i am pretty sure this is not hardware problem because my phone had signal issues and LG charged repair fee around US$ 55. My phone was not rooted before repair and also my phone was charging fast too. It has installed ZVD7 ROM. But once i get my phone it was completely changed. They rooted my phone, They converted my ROM from ZVD7 to Cloud G3 2.2 and they also installed TWRP recovery. But still phone is not charging same like as you posted. I just noticed another thing phone is perfectly charging in TWRP recovery mode. Therefore i am 99% sure it's not hardware issue. 2nd issue is that phone is also not detect with my PC. I tried different drivers but failed. Anybody can help me or suggest me any suitable ROM and provide me correct driver or PC suite?

Not yet Dear...It is the piece of junk for me. Now my ROM has been deleted. I want it back
I have the same problem. The phone is acting very inconsistent with charging after I replaced my broken display. This is the second time I replace the display, and it didn't cause any issues the first time. Basically, my phone won't charge more than maybe 2% over a period of 12-16 hours. The phone does not discharge as others have mentioned in previous posts.
No one seems to have a solution to this problem. Some people online are arguing that is it a "security measure" LG have installed into the phone, which makes it impossible to properly charge the phone without an official LG charger/cable. However, I never used the official charger, but been using various chargers and cables without problems!
But now comes the really weird part. I decided to take off the backcover, and then plug in the charger to see if pushing down on different parts would somehow fix it (loose connections etc..). But before I got around to test such hackery, I plugged in the USB and the phone suddenly started charging! I proceeded reproduce the problem/solution, and the result was very confusing: no real charging with backcover on; perfect charging with the backcover off.
Would anyone here on XDA have any ideas as to why this is happening? I've been thinking that the connectors on the backside on the cover might have something to do with it. Not having the backcover on does not seem to affect the phone at all (i can use it like I would without the cover).
TLR: My phone won't charge with the backcover on, magically works when the backcover is off. I suspect that it might have something to do with the connectors on the back of the cover.
Maybe putting the back cover on the phone is causing a grounding problem or shorting a circuit. Maybe put some insulating material on the inside of the back cover and then put on the phone?

Yes, I thought about doing this, trying one connectors at a time. Do you think that the sticky part of a post-it note like do? I don't have electrical tape lying around atm :/
Anything that is non-conductive should be fine since it is just a test.
You could also use a non-sticky piece of paper between the cover and the phone's components.

So you solved the problem?
I have very same problem decon89 described - I replaced screen and cannot charge it properly. And even worse: charging is possible with the phone being switched off completely. And after phone is charged - I cannot turn on the phone unless i open back cover and unplug-plug battery cable. Phone MAY turn on without unplugging-plugging battery, but it is blind luck. Yesterday i accidently turned off my 100% charged lg g2 and could not turn it back on during whole day. If someone has a solution please share it.
Hi everyone,
I'm so sorry for not following up on this thread. I haven't fix the problem yet, but it worked for same time, then started acting up again.
I've put a few strips of electrical tape on the bottom part of the phone, behind the black plastic thing. I did this because of an issue with my display having a loose connection. This fixed the screen problem, but the charging fault came back.
The idea of putting a piece of paper between the battery and cover did not work at the time, but I'll try it again tonight.
As I'm writing this, the phone is charging with the cover half off. It works, charges, no problem. I can even use the phone even though the bottom part of the cover is off.

Ni it can't be boot loader. Check whether that table u placed over your note 3 was damp, water or had any kind of moisture. This could also be the cause of problem. If possible check with any other battery.

So what u wait for if they can do this for free and quick

No, there is nothing. Just bricked phone without any sign of life.
Unfortunately, if that is the case, this may be a hardware problem related to the motherboard which needs to be replaced. Make sure to leave it for a few days then try to charge it to see if it would respond, otherwise, make also sure that this is not a display problem by checking if the device is working ( try phonecalls or so ... )

It is definitely the case. The battery itself gives 3.6 V but the phone is not getting it. I've seen a topic where a guy was advising to perform a JTAG flashing (can be a bootloader error) connecting the phone immediately to a power source (without battery). But not sure if I can perform it too. Any ideas ?
Bootloader errors are mainly due to motherboard malfunctions on the galaxy S7 edge, this is a very common issue where the only fix is to completely replace the motherboard, some cases can be repaired due to a reset or a stock rom flash ( which cannot be your cases because you cannot access to download more nor recovery) while others are fixed with a custom flash. Some very rare cases are also fixed with that JTAG flashing you heard of, this forces the battery to work and deliver its power to the rest of the parts, but this is a very risky operation which can damage your entire phone. If you wanna try it, I advice you to get some professional help as you can hurt yourself too in this process ! Good luck
It looks like you a main board issue. You might need to have that part replaced.

Yeah, you just have to make sure that it is completely working. But my experience shows that it doesnt end up really well, because the phone will just suffer from other malfunctions due to imcompatibility and all. So I dont recommend you doing it, if you really want to repair it, send it to the customer services !
Good luck

I had the same issue. As suggested that the phone may switch on once the battery is completely drained, I waited till last night and plugged it in and it started charging.
It was fine till this morning. I inserted the SIM cards and then connected to the laptop. I thought I would backup the data using smart switch before doing a factory reset. The backup went fine till 75% and then boom again turned off. This time there's a lot of battery left, and I might have to wait 4-5 days before it can be drained completely. But I'm now hopeful that it'll eventually turn on and when it does I'll immediately do a factory reset before doing anything else. I'm suspecting that a rogue app might be causing it. This time it might have happened while that app is being backed up. The LED is constant Red this time indicating the state it was connected to the laptop at the time of incident.
Is there anyway to drain battery quickly at this stage?
It turned on again last night when I connected the charger. It was showing the charging symbol. After 5-6 minutes of charge I tried to hold Vol - + Power buttons briefly to reset the device and it went off again. It's lying like a brick currently.

had the same thing happen to me.
Initially crashed.
could be turned on after draining the battery(phone was still warm at times with screen off/phone off)
charged and could turn on again.
But the time it could stay on would decrease and decrease.
It then just bootlooped and with that would only accept charge turned off.
In the end I couldnt turn it on at all and it wouldnt charge.
Looking to replace my mainboard now. seems that the Flashmemory damaged itself.

SAMSUNG j5 (j500FN) - Completely Dead - HELP!!!!!!

Hi
My J5 was working just fine yesterday. Today I tried to switch it on, I got no response. I tried to charge it, the battery charging icon does not come up, screen blank. Replaced the battery, still it refuses to turn on. The power on switch seems fine, checked it with a multimeter. Battery voltage 4.03 volts. Is this a known issue? What do I need to do to revive my phone? Any help appreciated. Thanks

How old is your phone? Did you ever drop it? It might be the LCD itself.

I doubt that. Phone has not been dropped. 3 years old now. The phone does not vibrate when I press the power button. Also I don't hear a sound from my PC when I connect it with a usb data cable.
