Buy Nexus 6P now or wait (May 2016)? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I've had a LG G2 for 2.5 years and it's been a great phone. Unfortunately I'm starting to have issues with the microphone and the phone probably needs to be replaced in the not too distant future.
I am currently in a situation where I honestly am not in a rush to buy a new phone, I prefer to have the latest and greatest (because it generally holds up better over the years) and I want a phone that'll serve me for another 2-3 years.
The Nexus 6P has a lot going for it, the display, the stereo speakers, the buttery smooth UI, sleek design and fingerprint scanner.
On the flip side, I find it a bit too big (but I can manage it) and I'm worried about how well the phone will age. I don't have much faith in the Snapdragon 810. Is it still worth buying or am I better off waiting for the next generation?
The Nexus 6p costs $630 here. I've had a look at the newest 2016 flagships and only HTC 10 caught my attention, but the price of the phone is an outrageous $830 and I cannot justify spending so much.
So, should I hop on the Nexus 6P wagon or wait for the next generation?

I'd say for you to wait. But for what? I don't see any flagships phones to be announced. Don't know. Maybe the next Nexus? Surely will be a few months away.
The CPU is not that important. At least for me. If I'd buy the Nexus 6P at this time. Probably yes, for the price and updates.

I upgraded last month to a 6P but that's because my N5 was on it's last legs and there was a sale ($500 for a 64GB 6P and they throw in a $50 gift card so it's effectively $450).
I would have waited for a 820-based 6P but it's unclear if Google will really release such a beast. I wanted a Nexus device to ensure updates for a few years so I ended pulling the trigger on the 6P when the sale was announced.

The other device to look at would be the Moto X Pure.
Processor is slower but here in the states a 64GB version for $399.

Another option came up, the Samsung Galaxy S7 for $680 - so $50 more.
The S7 has a lot going for it, like the more wieldy size, better display, good camera, waterproofing (which is more of a nice-to-have sort of thing). On the other hand I will be missing out on the quick Android updates and the stock android experience and I will get the TouchWiz UI, which I don't mind (I've been living with G2's UI for 2.5 years which isn't much better...) and I'll be missing out on the stereo speakers.
The Moto X Style is really nice, but if the SD 810 has me worried, how about the 808? I like the looks of the Moto X Style but the SD 808 and bad battery life is a deal breaker, even at the $420 price tag.

Had to get the 6P for Fi. Happy with it. I was holding out for I/O 2016 in hopes they would announce a mid year fresh with better CPU but no such thing happened. Oh well. This phone is pretty chill for me.

oh man we are in the exact same situation here ! literally ! G2 802 owner here. i was running exodus 6.0.1. it will keep you going for a little while but with lack of good camera features. i will be pulling the trigger on the 6p soon. it costs 594$ here if bought from play devices (play store), but in third party e commerce sites its about 475.. the prices will drop soon. currently its at its lowest price here. once it hits the 400$ barrier im picking it up for sure ! guaranteed updates for next 2-3 years officially another thought is that . what if the next nexus is actually cheaper than the current 6p ? (in terms of initial pricing). itll be like we bought the old device for just 10-15$ more or something.. hence till my g2 is going good, i can keep it on hold. i suggest you do the same . head over to cheapass.in , here you can track prices of the links posted from e commerce sites and it will tell mail you to inform you the price drop ive been following the 6p for a while now.

If I would to buy it now I would do it. I got mine in January and no had no problems with it at all. i get good battery life and with the improvements android N it will be better in my opinion. I been using a V10 a few weeks as I got it for my backup/media phone since it has a sd card and while i like it especially cause the camera will be great for the future...i returned back to the 6P yesterday and i forgot how much i love it. great screen and i forgot how awesome those speakers are. the moto x pure might be a little better but still the 6P speakers are great. my only gripe is that i wish google would be a damn sd card slot but i know it will never happen but i can dream.

I came over from a G2 and haven't regretted it for a minute.

Just had to retire my G2 D800 due to screen ghost touches. Got the 6p. Bigger but loving it so far. Not really a phone gamer, just calls, texts, and read news articles. Battery is amazing. 6-7 hours SOT.

Would love to know how you're managing that... I'm lucky to get over 4 hours on anything from stock to custom ROMs and kernels with Greenify, Xposed, etc. Never play games, only browsing, texting, music, and small YouTube bits here and there. My battery life has never been that great on any device like some people claim.

Only rooted. Ad blocker installed. Disabled all non essential Google apps (Chrome, Drive, Movies and TV, Books, Games, and Photos). I use Tinfoil for Facebook instead of the stock app and Opera Mini. I don't need emails delivered immediately so all syncing is turned off. And turned off Googles 'Back up my data' in Backup and Reset since there seems to be a bug with it eating away battery in some of the other forums. I don't need Google Now and disabled the voice activation in Search. At this very moment, I've got 7.5 SOT with 12% battery left.

We are literaly in the same exact situation, I've had my G2 for about 2 years now and I recently rooted it and flashed Google Edition 1.5 ROM + Dorimanx kernel which kinda revived my phone and Its now way smoother with better battery life, that being said I cant see myself keeping this phone after the summer's done and I've been looking for a potential replacement. The HTC 10 looks perfect on paper: similar size, better specs, better build quality but since it just came out Its too expensive for me, looking at last year's flagships the nexus 6p seems the best of the lot but it's just so damn big and my hands are kinda small. At this point I really cant decide if I should get a 6P in like August or wait a year or so until I can afford the HTC 10.Btw if anybody knows some other reasonably priced 5.2-5.3 inch phone with atleast 3 gigs of ram and a cpu equivalent to a 810 please let me know.

I had an HTC 10, 6P, and S7 Edge all at the same time. I currently only have the 6P and S7 Edge - trying to decide which to keep.
The 10 was a good phone. But here's what killed it for me... the LCD and the size, mostly. The LCD is great for an LCD. But it's still an LCD, and it's terrible compared to OLED. The 6P and S7E are just so much better to look at, even in sRGB modes where they aren't oversaturated. Having pure black is something most people don't appreciate until they see it on a 55"+ TV in front of them. I have a $4,000 4K OLED TV, and I can never go back. The same holds true with even a small smartphone display - you use the display more than anything. It better look damn good. Also, even if I could get past the contrast, there were 2 other major issues I had with it. Number 1, the motion blur was TERRIBLE! It might not actually be that bad in the LCD world, but OLED has practically instant pixel response. That in itself removes a LOT of motion blur until we get 120+Hz smartphone panels - it's coming, just you wait! Also, the 10's display had a pink/red tint to it, 24/7. Holding it next to the 6P or S7E, this was obvious. And after years of having large phablets, I really couldn't go back to using a 5.2" screen.
Everything else about the 10 is something to love. The design is incredible. The camera is great. The DAC/amp are great. The speakers were great. The speed of the device, the factory go-ahead to root/unlock, the fingerprint sensor, the feel in the hand... all awesome. But none of these good qualities could make up for its worst, and that was the display.

No phone is a 2-3 year phone. And if there's one it's the 6P because of the updates policy. Samsung is surely out of the equation in that matter.

Tell Apple, Samsung, LG users, etc that. There are plenty of 2-3 year capable phones out there. How many 2-3 year users there are is an entirely different question.
I still know plenty of people out there with iPhone 4s, 5, Galaxy S4, S5, LG G2 & G3's out there. And not to leave Nexus users out, I still know people with Nexus 5's out there.
So I wouldn't say there isn't one out there. And in my opinion, the 6P won't be one of them. There are already too many threads with issues. Only time will tell on the 6P.

So you had severe doubts that the 6P was a 2-3 year phone, but now you're quoting a bunch of them. I think you're a bit confused.

Any phone can be a 2-3 year phone. Just depends how much the person is a tech fanatic and appreciates the latest and greatest. My buddy is using an S5 still... I couldn't do it, but he never complains.

I've had the 6P for about 6 months and have been very satisfied with it. Coming from the Nexus 5 I was also worried about the size but I got used to it quickly. I'm not sure I would want anything bigger though. If you're wanting a Nexus you could wait for the next one but you never know what they'll do next. I bought my Nexus 5 when I realized the then soon to be released Nexus 6 was going to be so huge.

Anybody underwhelmed? Now impressed!

I got the new Nexus 7 at Walmart and also picked up the old Nexus in perfect condition from Craigslist for $85. Been spending time working with both side-by-side all morning. My thoughts...
1. The new one seems marginally quicker at some things like swiping between screens in the launcher. That to me is the most noticeable difference, and it's not that big of a change. I am thinking the better graphic acceleration contributes here.
2. I can't tell much difference in the screens. I know there is more resolution, but with my bifocals, I am just fine with the old screen. Saturation on the new screen seems a teeny bit better, but there is also a slight buish tint. I expected to be blown away by the new screen. I'm not.
3. Call me crazy, but I prefer the feel in the hand of the old version. The more rounded edges and the back feel better to me. Can't tell much of a difference in weight, but the new one definitely feels thinner, and the thinness cuts into my palm a bit more. I don't like the thinner bezels at all. And the new one is slightly taller, feels kind of awkwardly shaped.
4. The new tablet takes significantly longer to charge.
5. I couldn't care less about the front camera. Will never use it.
6. Perhaps the deal-killer for me is that the new version has some kind of touchscreen problem. The keyboard gives double-presses, and single touches on buttons (like "accept" in the Play Store) too often requires multiple tries. Anybody else noticing this? Maybe mine is bad?
All-in-all, it looks like the new Nexus 7 has provided a nice opportunity to get the old version cheap for me. After trying both, I don't see a compelling reason to stay with the new one. Just my honest assessment. Your mileage may vary.

having seen 2 different N7 2013 units already, i'd say the screen is a lottery just like it was with the 1st model. yellow tint, contrast setting and scroll blur will vary on each one. btw i never understood the reviews that go into some major details about the screen, like anandtech for example. don't get me wrong, their reviews are amazing but those screen technicalities are not worth anything seeing how the review unit will be different to any actual unit on the store shelves.

1. Do you play graphics/processor intensive games? The new processor crushes the old one. I don't recommend the upgrade if smoother swiping between screens is all you're looking for.
2. Again, if you are content with the old resolution... stick with that. Clearly, the majority of reviewers and myself personally are in love with the screen. When I use my GS3 now, I cringe.
3. That's great that you like the old thickness. Sounds like an issue with your expectations.... Not the device itself.

5. You should have known this prior to buying the device.... How can you be underwhelmed by a feature you already knew you didn't want...
6. Never had this happen on the two 32 g models I've used.
TL;DR You're doing it wrong. Stop hating on the device because your expectations are off... Doesn't sound like what you need out of a tablet demands a new Nexus 7... you can't blame the tablet for that.

Well the reason it takes longer to charge is the old nexus 7 came with a 2 amp charger and the new one only has a 1.3 amp

I for one LOVE the new screen, if you can't see the difference then your in the minority.
An $85 older Nexus 7 is a great value. Just keep it and return the New Nexus, if you do think it worth the premium to you.

I love everything about the New Nexus 7. It is what I expected from Google/Asus and they delivered. What else do you want them to do at the $229 price point? Google has put in a nice 1080p display, underclocked S600 processor, 2gig of ram, 5ghz wifi and the memory subsystem has been approved over the original. My only real criticism is the lack of SD card slot but that is true for any Google device. This is not the perfect tablet and people have to put their expectations in check.
Can anyone compare another $229 tablet to this one? Even the $400 Note 8 gets beat buy this and I'm a Note 2 owner.

I mean for all that are reading this and don't have one yet the truth is this. Should you upgrade? Hell yes!!!! Now when is the question to you I sold my 16gb gen1 for 170 a week ago came with cases so to spend 40 bucks to get the new one is nothing. Even if its 60 dollars its worth it. Think about how much apple fanboys spend to upgrade every year. The new nexus is better in every way possible.
Now if you happy with the old I understand most people are probably using this for reading stuff so the first one is fine. I just never really liked the first design wise

I still have yet to see the new Nexus 7. I hadn't used my OG Nexus for probably 2 months and, now that I am again, I'm realizing how "good enough" it is. I'm going to have to see the new one to really convince myself to drop $270 on the 32gb.

its a good upgrade, still a bit of stagger here and there. they should of went with the snapdragon 600 instead of the s4.

This gen is deff better then last gen i wasnt really liking how it felt on the first one this one feels and looks alot better

It's underwhelming when you compare it against the high expectations of the first Nexus 7.
The original Nexus 7 made an absolute joke of all the other mfg's 7"-8" tablets at their existing price point. The ONLY reason you'd buy something other than a Nexus 7 was if you wanted micro sd card support - otherwise the specs were no contest. And why should they? Google was working on razor thin margins for the hardware compared to mfgs.
If you go to a box store and look at the new N7, and then look at all the other 7" tablets, everything else is still a joke and it's far from underwhelming. Google stated that they were making a profit on this one, but my guess is that a big part of this is being able to leverage Motorola's buying power/agreements to reduce individual component cost. Best buy is making a 3.5% margin on the new nexus 7 (8-9.4USD). - it barely makes sense to take up the floor space to sell the damn things and I'd wager that most other box retailers are not doing much better.

It'd be genius if someone from BB knew that staples was running the tablet coupon of $30 off and launched early to cause staples to take a loss on their inventory ($~20 per unit).

I can understand that, especially after you mentioned picking up the 2012 Nexus 7 for $85 off Craig's list.
People here are gadget geeks and and spec-mongers, always wanting the latest and greatest (me included). Some of its get a little defensive if someone seen to put down our device of choice.

No I am not underwhelmed overall, but I am by the lack of optimization in the games I care about... The funny thing is the old N7 smokes this devices in both GTA3 and Vice City... go ahead, try and max out the settings, I dare any of you. Now I know this device is significantly more powerful but the bottom line is real world performance and I believe the OP raises a valid point: there isn't a significant difference.
Source: I've owned an N4 since launch (and now an N7.2) and had a friend's OG N7 for a couple weeks when they were out of town.

Yeah maybe the upgrade isn't worth an extra $150 over the 1st gen you just got, but it is still an upgrade and we want the latest and so most people are willing to pay the premium for that.

Personally my first gen doesn't come close to touching my new one. Everything is so much faster, smoother and instant. Thanks to the extra RAM it doesn't get crippled when running lots of apps or updating. Can't believe anyone could use both devices and not come away thinking the new one is an upgrade and a half.
Oh, and the screen is flipping fantastic, my GS3 takes a second to get used to when switching directly between the two.

Nexus 6P, MXP killer?

To start, I'm definitely satisfied with my 64gb, black leather and red accent MXP. My biggest concern right now is the announcement of the Nexus 6P. Modders/developers, will this effect the potential of future development for the MXP? I'm with Verizon, so my choices on rootable/unlocked devices is very limited. Anyone else concerned and debating on selling/returning MXP? Also, with Android M announced, this will now show how truthful Motorola was on updating MXP.

I am happy with Moto. Nexus 6p is not much better oh and more expensive.

I haven't even seen my custom MXP yet and I'm debating returning it. My MXP has been at my house since September 18, but I'm at college and won't be able to retrieve it until October 10. I only have a few days left whether to tell my Mom to return it or not (Motorola only allows returns within 14 days of delivery).
The Nexus 6P definitely looks like the better overall phone spec-wise. But the differences are marginal.
The upsides to the MXP that make this a very hard decision are the customization, so I like the design much better (doesn't look like an iPhone), and the Motorola apps that the phone comes with (I kinda like the fact that it's not 100% stock android, but close). I'll also be able to have it in my possession much earlier (Nexus 6P doesn't look like it's shipping until November).
The only reasons I'd go for the Nexus 6P is the bigger battery and the better dev support.
Very hard decision to make here. Motorola's customization should not be overlooked here, while I think that the Nexus 6P's marginally better specs could be.

I know the two devices are so very similar with a $100 price difference. Just hoping modders will stick with developing for the MXP, biggest reasons for getting the MXP, was for near stock OS and development here at XDA.
Also, who should I donate to for development of CM for MXP? (I know it's probably a huge list of users, I do like compensating those for their time and efforts)

The only person I've seen doing anything with the MXP recently is Harsh. That is great but the odds of people suddenly grabbing this device for development, with its fairly obvious and well reported shortcomings is pretty low IMO. Especially with the nexus already announced and shipping in 30 days.
I bought my MXP on the third and still don't have the stupid thing. Sorry but that is pretty pathetic on Moto's part.
Add to all this Leno gutting Moto right before launch and the odds of updates being speedy being diminished greatly makes the MXP the riskier device.
I don't need the finger print scanner but its nice to have. I normally don't lock my phone but I would with the scanner and for last pass and bank stuff its really nice to not have to tap in my log pass word. Add to that Amoled is better and a better chipset that won't struggle when the gpu runs and bigger battery make the $100 a no brainer. My pure is most likely going back assuming it even gets here.

The upsides to the MXP that make this a very hard decision are the customization, so I like the design much better (doesn't look like an iPhone), and the Motorola apps that the phone comes with (I kinda like the fact that it's not 100% stock android, but close). I'll also be able to have it in my possession much earlier (Nexus 6P doesn't look like it's shipping until November).
The only reasons I'd go for the Nexus 6P is the bigger battery and the better dev support.
Very hard decision to make here. Motorola's customization should not be overlooked here, while I think that the Nexus 6P's marginally better specs could be.

I wouldn't return it, 6P is much more expensive per storage option and really you'd only be adding a fingerprint scanner, besides that its just a small step up. Also you probably wouldn't see it until years end since on the reddit threadspeoples delivery dates are now at mid-late november and that was hours ago.

The dang device has been out for 3 weeks! The developers that have the brand new device have had it for 3 weeks, and most wouldn't not buy another device after they just bought a $400 phone for a downgrade in specs! //rant

Valid point... Maybe with the 2 devices being so similar, developing for each might not be too different either and possibly porting 6p mods to MXP might be an option.

I'm having a little buyers regret as of today, but I'm not sure if it's worth the $100 more and I've grown to quite like the Moto sensor features and their "always listening" feature.... I use it much more than I thought I would.
I'm sitting here looking at a brand new OnePlus2 that I got yesterday - I received my invite and had to try it. I'm thinking I could sell that and get the 6P (with a little more $$ thrown in) and see what I think of it?
It's a never ending game.... In a couple months, a new Flagship will be out and I'll wish I had that too... I have to stop somewhere and pause for a while.

I have a OnePlus 2 invite as well. I was thinking about trying out lol, mainly because of the fingerprint and Snap 810. I already ordered the Nexus 64GB Aluminum and I will be sending this Moto back.

The OP2 sounds pretty weak (speaker) compared to the MXP. It even sounds pretty weak compared to a Galaxy S6/S6 Edge/iPhone..... Also, during the initial setup my battery went from 93% to 52% in just a 35-40 minute period. This included downloading and applying the 2.1 Oxygen update and several apps from the app store and restarting after the update. My M9 had a Snapdragon 810 and it was snappier than the OP2, IMO, and sounded a lot better too.
I did like the off-screen buttons and the home button/fingerprint scanner.
I think that's what I'll do.... Sell it for as close to the $400 I paid (after shipping) for it and put that back for a N6P.
The biggest complaint I have about the MXP is I can't find a screen protector to fit it!

Interesting... Thanks for the response. I recommend the 6P pre-order, this phone looks like it will be a winner. Huawei makes pretty nice phones, I'm glad they teamed up with Google. I was thinking about getting the OPT still but trying out HydrogenOS, I'm hearing good things about it and of course you always have CM.

You don't have cm with OnePlus 2... They ended their relationship a long time ago, hence why they had to go to Oxygen.

The oneplus one was great. I had an invite for the 2 but I passed on it for the Pure. Now my pure is going back as its not living up to expectations and I have the BIg P on pre order.
Its like $50 more for the nexus. Lots of little things make that worth it, biggest of all is the development on the nexus will be much better.

For me switching to the Nexus will only cost me about $5 more or $55 more if I do a 64GB since I spent $475 on the Moto with 32GB and wood cover and $20 on a memory card I probably don't need but bought simply because I could lol. So take away the memory card and the upgrade is only $25 but I get a better battery, fingerprint reader, instant updates, at least 2 years of updates, maybe better camera, AMOLED displace, notification light, etc....seems like a good deal at least for me.

I'm basically in the same situation. 64gb with leather and have a 64gb SanDisk UHS 3 card. If I bought the 64gb 6p I would save money. I might just keep MXP so I don't have to deal with selling it.

Just to update you on something, OT here...
I boxed up my MXP this morning and have been using the OP2 all day... I've got about 10 hours of up-time with about 1:20 SOT and I'm at 77% on my battery. To be honest, this feels just about like the MXP... And I'm hoping this gets better after a few days of use (set up like a new ROM last night before bed).
I've had wifi on all day, took more calls than usual (4 calls), listened to music through my speaker (still sounds weak) and played 3 songs though my bluetooth speaker, just to test it out........Plus all the normal texting, email, weather, app updates, ect...
So the battery seems to be better after initial setup, which I'm extremely glad!
Now, if I can just make it with this super weak speaker for 5 weeks until my N6P arrives, that's gonna be the hardest!

So I ended up passing. I ordered the product and I saw the processing time may take 5-10 days. Who know, maybe we'll get lucky and the 6P ships early (fingers crossed) . I've been using my OPO and It's still smooth as day one, so I will hold on to it and use it as my backup phone. I will probably use the OPT money for a smartwatch, the Samsung Gear S2 comes out tomorrow.

Sounds like a good plan! I never had the OPO, but it seems to still have a pretty strong following.
FWIW: I was told there was a 5-10 processing period too, ordered it Thursday evening.....Tried to cancel it a couple hours later and was told "it's already been processed and cannot be cancelled now".... It arrived Monday morning. So I think the 5-10 day is a CYA thing they use, which isn't a bad thing, I guess?
I did the Smartwatch thing earlier this year (Moto360 than a Sony SW3)... Loved it at first, but it only lasted about a month. I didn't like the bluetooth drain on the battery..... My OCD already watches my phone battery too much, with the extra drain and now another device to watch the battery on, I didn't get anything done!

Considering this phone, couple of questions and feedback from owners please...

I've been away from all this phone thing for a couple of years. In fact, I was never very much into it, I just used to buy whatever flagship there was at the moment as that would usually be cheaper - a phone that would last for a long time and be able to keep getting support. Seems like things~have changed quite a lot and flagship phones are waaaay too big and cost what they cost because of a lot of stuff I don't use or need.
I currently own an LG G2, which from my searches seems to be still very up to date. Best two things about it is the size and screen/body ratio that allows for single hand use; big battery (3000mah). It's getting old though and I was thinking of replacing it but I'm lost.
This X Play got my attetion mainly because of the price, battery life and the near stock Android which should be easy and quick to keep up with Android updates. Motorola being owned by Google made me think these would get a fast and prompt support.
But after reading and watching a few reviews, I'm no loner sure I should spend my money. A few specific questions and a more general one:
- Many reviews end up saying battery life is nowhere near the values claimed with regular use, with screen on times of about 4 hours (web browsing and such). Is that the case? Lower spec Snapdragon and over 3600mah sound like it would last a lot more.
- How are updates with Motorola and what would it mean in the future, now that it's going to Lenovo? Is Pure close to owning a Nexus or no?
- Do benchmark numbers like Geekbench mean anything? My old G2 wipes the floor with this one if they mean anything, making a lot less sense getting it. It would be a huge downgrade.
And the more general and probably more useful question for me...
- Are you happy with this phone and why? If you know the G2, is it worth replacing it for this one? I mainly use these things as phones, web browser, social media and light games when I need to kill some time (no crazy high spec FPS games or watching movies or playing music). An immediate disadvantage to me is that this phone is already a bit too big for my liking. Borderline too big though, so pluses could easily outweigh this.
Just to give you guys a bit more context, the Nexus 5x would be my no brainer choice if it had at least 3000mah battery. Like the OnePlus X for size, specs and price but I think my current G2 is clearly a better phone on pretty much everything.

Personally i am disappointed with the screen on X play. The previous versions of Moto X had an AMOLED screen and the Moto Display was great on it, and up to the mark on the LCD screen.

I've been asking around but it seems I'm keeping my money and my G2. I can't really find a phone that is a solid, all round improvement over it and that justifies spending the cash. Oh well... :highfive:

Honestly dude, this is a very good value phone. Performance with the underpowered chip is really pretty good minus the occasional hiccup (I don't game, but I like a fluid ui... which this definitely has 99% of the time. Sometimes it'll hang for a bit under load but sorts itself out pretty quickly and is a very minor nuisance). The battery is a beast too. I dunno what setup the other guy has that he's only getting average BL (xposed cuts life in half I've noticed, so I stopped using it), but mine is great. Build quality feels kinda cheap and the way it rattles when it vibrates makes me cringe, but this is not a flagship phone. I got mine for 150 CAD outright on a carrier promo, but honestly I'd still be satisfied if I paid double that

Kinda like we have hit a brick wall. I expect that a flagship phone shouldn't start off with 16gb anymore... Looking at you Apple.

Thanks guys! I was sort of doubting my conclusion... from what I was seeing, there's no real differences in usage for the perspective of an average user. Its a good thing though, a cheap(ish) phone like this would actually give me a better experience over some (all) the current flagships.
I might be getting old, apparently I'm no longer a member of the market when a company thinks about a new phone... From what I've seen, my perfect phone would be the combination of 3 current models and that combination doesn't exist: OnePlus X for size and looks, Nexus 5x for the stock Android and this Play for battery life.
I came across some Chinese phones that claim crazy insane MAH batteries(*) but, knowing how they go about rewrapping batteries and LiPo packs with absurd numbers that are impossible, I'm not even looking into those. If they are for real I'll eventually hear something about them...
(*) Google "Ulefone Power" just for kicks...

I'm only 26 myself and I feel like in the older part of the market these days! I had been contemplating some of those cheap Chinese imported phones myself, but found the X Play in store and that's what changed my decision. I'm overall happy with it. Mobile CPUs have seemingly advance more in the midrange/low range sector than the high end chips.
I don't see any reason to buy a flagship phone any more, or if you do, buying an older generation phone for the cost savings. Especially if you unlock the bootloader and load other firmware.

Well, I guess one gets used to certain things and stops feeling the need for more. But apparently the good thing about flagships to us is that they make what we consider good gear mainstream and affordable. I had to buy a new PC the other day and I ended up with an odd looking and tinny HP Mini i5 8gb plugged into a 32' TV. Waaay cheaper than an entry level gaming rig, does everything I want effortlessly, doesn't take up room... so there's a good thing about getting old (I'm 38 btw)
More on topic though, and picking up your point about past flagships, I've just found the Galaxy S6 Active. I had never seen one of those things before, don't think it was ever on sale here in Portugal. Ugly as hell, looks like something made for the zombie apocalypse but it's an S6 with a top notch battery! That could be interesting, must check that one out better...

If it's not an AT&T exclusive and available everywhere, it would have been an obvious choice for some.

I was comparing the X Play's battery to G2's battery
Compared to most flagship's available now, yes the battery is a Monster but with G2, it's only a slight bump (not the capacity but the actual performance) and i thought he was looking to replace his G2

It can be had unlocked, I've looked into ebay and I can get one from within the EU but they look like unlocked and tested AT&T used units. Price is about the same or higher than a brand new X Play. And despite being checked units with warranty, that still doesn't tell me if it has a fresh battery in it or not - probably not. Getting one from the US is out of the question as with taxes and duties the price could easily be 30 to 40% higher.
That and the fact that it is an AT&T phone. My current one is also an AT&T branded unit and it's a PITA to update it. No OTA updates for me as I'm not in the US and the phone has to be registered to the network to get the updates - or something like that, don't really know that works but I have to manually flash it.

I sort of am yekollu, but it's not like I need a new phone because mine is about to die, it's more the capricious wish to have a new toy. My G2 is getting old in the way it has some scuffs to the body (mostly hidden by a low profile case) and battery went through many cycles already but its health is still good. I just thought that after a couple of years not looking into phones things would have leaped hugely and the most recent models would wipe the floor with the G2. Some do but only in high end games I don't play and at the cost of having to have the phone constantly charging.
I still haven't gave up on the idea of a replacement and the X Play is a strong candidate as battery life is more important to me than most things but I'm not yet convinced I'll feel like it was money well spent. I do appreciate your and other people's feedback as reviews have wildly different numbers and results, and I don't know how some of those numbers translate to everyday real usage. :highfive:

I just got another email from GB about the Elephone P9000 Power... at 180 bucks from China (so import duties most likely on top of that), and from a couple of youtube reviews I've seen, might be something worth the punt. As fas as I can tell, it runs stock Android also. It's a big 5.5 screen but so is the Moto and this thing looks a lot more compact. Sounds and looks too good to be true, so I'll have to look more into it. If what they, costumers and reviewers are saying is true, this is the real flagship killer and best phone to beat by a country mile.
...man, 6050mah battery?? And stock Android so no more ties to a company I don't know on the update side of things?

Dont buy those chinese phone. Their battery capacity is only good on paper. Im not even sure that they put real capacity on it

I'll post these screenshots to give you an idea of my battery usage. It's a beast in standby with MM as well my friend. I haven't modded mine much either, just rooted and gravitybox.
Oh I actually just remembered another phone that may interest you. The Alcatel Idol 3 5.5. It doesn't have the same size battery, but similar chipset. I played with it in store and it seems quite capable. I'm not sure about software updates though, haven't heart about MM for it yet.

Of course not... I can't even find their site. Or maybe a do but if that's their site... To make it worst, I know the brand from the electronic cigarette world, which was the only thing that worked at stopping me from smoking. They have a very cheap device with awful QC. They sound like a brand that will trough an electronic device together if they can find some NOS parts and with no clear focus or market.

Thanks! The more I look into this, and even without an urgent need to switch phones, the more interesting it looks. What sucks here in Europe is the price. It's a good price at just under €400 but no quick charger or anything. And the phones like the G4 or the Nexus 5x can be found cheaper. All worst on battery but still hard not to think about those for the price...
The US gets much nicer stuff, no fair! The Moto Droid 2 Turbo (or something like that) looks like a beasty, including battery life. But just like the S6 Active was an AT&T exclusive, the Droid 2 is a Verizon exclusive. No Moto Maker also but that's not a real bummer with the Play, I would end up with a similar look for it anyway. Not a fan of metal or matchy matchy colours that aren't either dark grey or black.

The G2 has a great battery life only because most flagship phones suck at that. I came to the G2 from an HTC OneX, flagship for less than a month because HTC released the OneX+ right away and without warning there would be such a thing. I now can't say for sure but I'm pretty certain I could go through a whole day of heavy use when I owned the first Galaxy. Those AMOLED displays wouldn't use much battery... you couldn't see a thing when on the outside but they were great little phones when in dark, smoky bars frequented by ladies of dubious reputation

You can try samsung galaxy a7 2016.
Touchwiz is better now and the screen and battery is great

Thanks for the original poster for this thread, because i am actually looking at the exact same doubt. I don't own a G2 right now, but i did in the past and i achieve 8 something hours SOT. I also found the battery life reviews tricky, with some stating massive stand by times and others just getting 4.5 hours SOT.
Also... the price difference is huge right now. We can get a decent G2 for 150 CAD$, and a moto x play on Wind carrier, still sells for 450 CAD$, plus tax, which totals 500$...
Shouldn't we be all achieve at least 8 hours with moderate usage? web browsing, calls, texts, facebook?

The difference in SOT amongst users comes down down to different usage scenarios.
Battery life will deplete according to 2g/3g/4g mode.
Also whether mobile data is used or wifi is used also counts.
The brightness at which phone is used also counts.
The signal reception of area again counts.

Used to be YES! But not if the front speakers are gone. Sticking with n6.... Looking at ZTE axon 7 as bootloader is unlocked and twrp plus good hw and cheaper price, good speakers seems worth a better look.

I see moving to a 5.5" screen as a downgrade.

After spending the price of two laptops on my N6 (£549) I expect it to last more than a couple of years. I like new toys, but there's a limit imposed by common sense. Newer processors may give an infinitesimal improvement in performance, which no doubt can be measured by benchmarks, but the N6 is plenty fast enough for me. The screen may not be the best around these days, but every time I watch a video I think "Wow, this is an amazing quality picture", so again, good enough for me.

I'll stay with Nexus 6, it's the best phone I ever had, even if it's not my daily phone because it's too big, it's really wonderfull with big screen, nice resolution (ready for carboards), enought RAM, 25Go is enought for me, nice photos/videos, good stereo sound with front speakers, fast charge... :good: I still love it

The Nexus Marlin and Sailfish will indeed not be true Nexus devices. It has been announced that Google is rebranding the Nexus brand, rumored at the moment to just be called "G"; and it will not feature a stock version of android, rather there will be G-only features built into the ROM. No word of bootloader yet.

Me too, not going to happen as long as there are decent 6" or bigger phones available. It's a pain trying to type messages or emails on such a small screen.

I really want a 64 bit mobile to develop my rom, but the 6P might break if I think about it too hard. So I'll check the new ones, but if they are too expensive here in Europe, and the early reviews are negative, then I'll just keep my N6.

I still love my N6 but I cracked the screen a bit in the corner.
I also want to finally make the move to Project Fi so I'm hoping for a bundle deal.

If what is in the leaks is true. I rather buy note 7. Back design too ugly for me.

There are a lot of reasons why people buy a Nexus device. The 2 most common reasons I always see is either the simplicity of the device (dare I say, bare bones of what a phone should do/have) and stock skin of Android or on the other side, the complex and customisable options that is possible with the fact that Nexus devices are easy to tinker with combined with the support of the developer community who are constantly providing support for devices for years even after they reach their sell by date(shoutout to all the devs btw )
Combined with this I guess its safe to stay for the most advanced users and beginners alike it all depends on if they're specific needs are still being met for them to stay with Nexus 6 or any other device for that matter and if not then it's time to upgrade.
Personally I will probably stick with Nexus 6 for as long as it lasts me or if a phone gets released with everything the Nexus 6 is and hopefully more ( Preferably a phone such as the Xperia Z5 Ultra , if Sony ever release it )

The price is too high for me. No front facing speakers, "just" a 5.5 Inch screen etc etc. For the moment my N6 is fast and stable enough to use it for the best part of the next year as well.
Bottom line, I would rather buy a OnePlus 3, than a "New Nexus" at this point.

Did they unviel it yet? I have my credit card ready. But i love my n6 to much lol

I've grown to the size of my phone and cant seem myself owning anything smaller.

Since first buying the Nexus 6 a couple years ago or so I've had a Moto X Pure, Huawei Mate 7, OnePlus 3, and now I'm back to the Nexus 6. This phone just has everything I want in a phone. 6 inch screen (which for me is the perfect size), simple, clean design, great development, stereo speakers, and good battery life. No point in updating to a newer phone for minimal gains in speed at the cost of at least a couple of the N6's great features.

More than likely I'm going to upgrade. My N6 will be paid off in October.

I'm ready for a smaller form factor, unless they completely **** it up and the design is completely underwhelming, I will be getting one, I'm not gonna get it on launch day like the Shamu though , gonna take my sweet time waiting for reviews to make a final decision, there is a chance I will be sticking with this device for another cycle, we'll see

Me too, I wish they would make another Nexus with a screen this size! They did it once and never again! I LOVE my N6!

I'll be keeping my N6 or getting the One Plus 3 if what I have heard and read about the new devices is true. I just love my N6, has everything I've ever wanted (minus a removable SD and/or battery which I really don't miss). Got my son a OP3 and it is really nice, I really liked my OP1. OnePlus is as close to a Nexus as you can get and unlike recent Nexus they are still inexpensive.

I pre-ordered my S8 last week, but now LG has opened its pre-orders here too. It's a good ~USD 100 cheaper and will actually beat Samsung to market despite starting later (by only about 3 days though). I got the chance to play around with a dummy, and I will say I slightly prefer the blockier construction on the G6 versus the S8's super-thin design (although there's no doubt the S8 looks better). I haven't had the chance to play with a real demo one though, but I'm definitely going out of my way to try it. I'm not terribly concerned about performance or display or camera, but what I am concerned about is battery. I'm someone who's very heavy on my devices, sometimes going 7+ hours SOT a day, and my S7's battery has become a bit of a slog in the year since I got it (even on lighter days, which I realize is still at least 4h SOT, it requires a mid-afternoon "nap"). The G6 does come with a larger battery, but also a less efficient processor. Which one do you think will serve me better, for the next year or so?

I am a LG fan myself and has used all the LG flagships since G4, both G and V series. I am expecting my G6 to be delivered today. I don't like Samsung because of their software, but that's just me.
As for you, if that extra 100$ is not a concern I would recommend the S8. For a heavy user, a power efficient cpu will probably give you longer sot, despite smaller battery.

I can deal with the software, I actually kind of like it (I know, I'm a monster hahaha). If I'm not wrong, standby is better on LG than Samsung right? Anyway, keep me posted on your G6's battery. I'm interested in hearing about it!

I think the battery life of the G6 is good, but twice now I've seen the battery level drop really fast during the day.
Here is what's common about those two incidents.
1) The phone was hardly used on those days.
2) Connected to WiFi.
3) Appears to happen after a week + days since the last time.
I'm beginning to wonder if the cause is some sort of carrier, or LG, baked in app collecting data, or running diagnostics. Being on WiFi kinda makes me suspect that because we know companies have been trashed before about consuming data on metered lines.
Regardless, it's irritating to find half your battery gone by noon when the phone has been on the coffee table for the entire time. A reboot appears to correct it, or resets the clock.
As for rogue apps in the background, I don't install apps. I've used the same apps for the last two years+ and didn't experience this on my V20, S7E, Note7, or V10.

Sounds like poor callibration on LG's part. Or perhaps intentional result modification to give the illusion of good endurance. Much like my S7 drops rapidly after exiting Ultra Power Saving.

I was excited about LG Pay, but that appears to be a slow moving boat. For those that don't know, LG Pay will use magnetic field modulating technology similar to Samsung Pay, which allows the phone to be used as a payment device with older magnetic card readers. Unfortunately LG Pay won't be released until June, and then only in South Korea. So far, LG has only been able to bring two, yes only two, financial institutions on board. No word if LG Pay will be released in the US.
I did like Samsung pay, but hated the white background it went to after an update. It looks like the white background may no longer be there from recent pictures I've seen.

Theyre not bad per se, just differently done. Where the Galaxy S8 has a normal display with bezels that cover the corners, the LG G6 display is a display whose corners have actually been cut off. This improves durability, as the corners are less likely to be impacted during a fall. This means the corners arent perfectly smooth, but only about as jagged as a circle on the display is. Which is to say: not noticeable when viewing normally.
There are lots of reasons to get the S8 over thd G6, and vice versa, but this ain't one of them.

The curved display of s8 is a big minus for me, along with the fingerprint sensor position.
Specially when watching a video, or playing games, the curved edges looks really ugly.

The curve is not as dramatic as previous curved Galaxy phones. The S8 reminds me a lot of the Note 7. Both the G6 and S8+ are great phones.

I had the opportunity of having a s8 for a couple of hours yesterday from my cousin. I admit it's a gorgeous looking phone, but still couldn't really like the screen curve, it's just not for me. Functionality is more important to me than aesthetics. My G6 got delivered today, and so far I am pretty happy. The only thing I am gonna miss is the notification LED, guess I just have to get used to the always on display.

You need to evaluate well for both and against...

I haven't turned my my G6 yet. I'm going to use the G8+ for a day or two before decided which one to keep.
The G6 definitely feels better in the hand with it's flat edges.
The S8+ finger print sensor is not as bad as the press is making it out to be. The press should concern themselves with more important issues in my opinion.
The display on the S8+ is fantastic, and you can stream music to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously.

I am waiting for Verizon to put one of these two on 50% off sale. Probably won't happen until Black Friday. No hurry, my G3 is working perfectly with Nougat 7.1.1.

Get the S8 if the fingerprint sensor is not an issue for you. The G6 is slower than most 2016 flagship. You could also get an S7 since its both faster and cheaper. Oh, and no bootloop

I had the s7 and the s7 edge (and the Note 7 for that matter}, and none of them were faster than the G6 I have now. YMMV.

too bad all the tests on the web says otherwise (Exynos with Nougat). The G6 is a joke. It even got a CDN$400.00 rebate since day 1 (using the trade in promo, I used a $15.00 Alcatel pos) + free LG TONE INFINIM (CDN$170.00 value (apparently)).
Terrible battery life, mediocre camera,2016 CPU, GG 3 and will probably get the bootloop plague. There is no reason (but the cool shape/screen ratio) to get this phone at retail price or even close to retail price. Its an overpriced mediocre phone thats great to hold.
And for some reason, only a few countries get the wireless charging ! What a weird decision.

Battery life is on par with most of the other flagships (somewhere between 4.5 and 6 hours SOT) and I stick by my assertion that performance is on par as well. The camera has strengths and weaknesses just like all cameras. Anyway, I'm enjoying the device. I'll leave it at that.

I also went with the G6. Never been much of a Samsung fan, but did want to at least have an open mind. I really prefer the screen size of the G6; the S8 just feels too long and narrow. So far battery life has been excellent, even with the AOD turned on. The camera seems to be a big improvement over the G4 I came from. FWIW, I'm very happy I chose the G6 over the S8. As always, YMMV.
