Hi,
Recently updated to Android 6.0.1 on my Note 4 and everything was working fine until I noticed that Power Saving Mode now disables email sync by default with no way of re-enabling it. This is an issue for me as I need to receive emails on the go whenever I I travel. I have tried all I can to re-enable sync while on Power saving mode but with no success. So basically to receive mail i have to disable Power Saving mode, which again will drain my battery faster.
Any ideas, pointers, solutions on how I can enable sync for the email native app (and others) on Marshmellow would be highly appreciated.
Thanks
That's true. In lollipop we had the option to disable or not background syncing, but in marshmallow there's no such option and background syncing is always disabled in power saving mode.
Same happens to grayscale mode which also disappeared from saving mode options, now it's just available in ultra power saving mode.
So in that case is there a work around? Just need sync for native email app.
Thanks

When I contacted Samsung NZ about this, they stated "Note 4 software update is in development phase. We couldn't reproduce the issue you are experiencing. We have listed the steps to factory reset your device. If you have issues after a factory reset, do not hesistate to contact us again."

Well thats helpful Samsung......would rather rollback to Lollipop. Will continue looking for a work around.
thanks.
If you look in /system/csc for "feature.xml" and "others.xml" there is a feature that codes which programs to keep active in power saving modE. Email may be a disabled app. I dont have the uodate, so I am not sure if you can change this in settings. Ill post the exact line later from home, but you can edit with root explorer and save and reboot.
Well actually you can
Go to settings>battery>battery usage>three dots at top right corner>optimize battery usage>choose all apps and disable whatever you want
Update: Issue resolved after update fix pushed out by Samsung. Now the "restrict background data" is available for Email, Messages, Music etc. Thanks for all your help.

This is driving me nuts. I check the autosync option in exchange account settings and it works fine for mail and contacts. But for calendar it just turns off. When I'm in calendar/settings/syncronize calendar, I turn it on again, and next day it's off again.
It's annoying that I have to manually sync, since I use the calendar because of my forgetfullness .
Version android 3.2 stock, build P7500xwkl1.
All the mentioned apps, mail, calendar, are stock apps.
Any ideas? tnx in advance.
same issue for me....
any idea?
solved
Solved!
And it's not a bug, it's a feature
Turning on power saving features also has an option "turn sync off when not syncronizing"... Just uncheck it and it is done.
I have the same issue but I don't use power saving mode, the 2 checkboxes are unchecked so I assume that the auto sync should not be affected by the low battery power...
Is there another setting for that?
Ok, I finally solved it, I use Setting Profile as profile manager and I don't know why but one of my profiles had one of its settings to turn off the auto sync data....
I disabled them as an effort to minimize wakelocks (similar to what is listed in this post)
It's definitely helped with getting better battery life but I prefer to have my email sync and LinkedIn sync back. They're all enabled but just don't sync unless I manually do it.
Can anyone advise? Screen caps of current enabled/disabled Google Services Framework attached
Edit: I've tried turning Sync off and turning back on, logging out and logging back in to the account, turning sync off and back on via the menu in Data Usage screen

Sorry, those screenshots are slightly incorrect. I did in fact re-enable the *checkin receivers and have rebooted the phone but still no "real time" syncing happening with my Gmail app.
Finally revisited this as my phone is still unable to sync notifications in "real time" at all.
I'm finding that checking all the "checkin" services/receivers under Google Services Framework via ROM Toolbox does not actually keep them checked (confirmed via refresh).
Any idea what is going on and how I can fix it?

Seem to have narrowed this problem down to power saving mode. At times Gmail seems to stop sending push notifications of new emails in the backgroind and Facebook will not update the home feed at all when opening it and forcing refresh (just says can't connect right now). This is all temporarily fixed by disconnecting then reconnect the data connection... Very annoying, anyone else have this issue? I know power saving mode is supposed to turn off background data but when the app is in the foreground it should be useable lol...

I am having the exact same issue, went to the carrier and they blamed Samsung. We uninstalled Gmail, reinstalled, updated it and then reconfigured my email accounts still nothing. It is doing the same for a regular email account and Facebook. You have to kill/close all apps and restart gmail and FB to get messages to refresh.
Quicker workaround is to have the app (either fb/Gmail) open and disable then re-enable your internet connection.
You'll soon notice it starts affecting other apps as well.
We really shouldn't need to be doing this for a phone this expensive. Will try contacting Samsung
It must be a software issue with power save mode messing up the apps connection to data. I'm just surprised no one else is having the same issue
I am also having this issue with Facebook, Messanger and other apps just hanging with no connection! Seems to be related to power save mode which blocks background data.
On my htc one m8, I had problems with gmail not getting push notifications only after upgrading to marshmallow. Switched to the outlook app and didn't have that problem. I'm doing the same thing on my s7. Seems like some apps are "dozed" more aggressively than others in marshmallow...

Power saving mode in marshmallow for Samsung devices disables background data, if you long press the power save button it shows that it does so, you need to have power save disabled to sync stuff.

Not just talking about syncing I'm talking about opening an app (e.g. Facebook) in the foreground and it no longer functions because it somehow lost connection to data. Manually refreshing your timeline is not considered background data or syncing
I had this issue and I called up SAMSUNG+ Exclusive support and they were able to help me with steps to get my facebook App works in powersaving mode. All you have to do is Setting---> Application--> Application Manager --> select Facebook--->select Storage --> press Clear Cache.
This solved my issue in my Verizon s7 edge.

Doesn't seem to have done anything for me
Has anyone else been having any issues with this? I seem to only be able to get new mail when I manually check the app.
I've tried:
making sure sync is enabled
clearing gmail app cache
clearing google app cache
turning off power saving mode
deleting/adding my gmail account
uninstalling/updating the app
I put my old phone on the same wifi network as my new S8 and the old phone gets the push notifications. This makes me feel like it's not an issue with the google account, but rather some setting on the phone.
I'm in the same boat here and I have no idea what to do and I need them push notifications. If some one comes up with a solution about please I've done everything what the main posts says also
Not sure if you only have the issue on wifi, but roaming is turned off by default which might explain the behaviour on 4g. Gmail itself works fine for me. Did you enable the notifications in the phone settings?

Use Inbox by Gmail. It will solve your issue.

I'm having this issue as well does anyone know a fix?
I have emails that are hours late that don't even notify me unless I manually refresh
I removed my 3 gmail accounts
Then added them back
I am now receiving push mail from 2 email accounts
The third one, I haven't receive emails yet today, so cannot say if push is working or not.
i done everything now, i reset my network settings even, it worked for about a day after that, and now it does not work again, any ideas guys i am missing lots of emails. Have 2 s8's in the family both have the same problem (EU variant here)
When you get new phone it's better to fresh install apps rather than transfer over. Reduces issues I've found in past.

i did not transfer, nor my other s8 galaxy in the family. we fresh installed everything.
Try putting gmail in Not optimized Apps (menu in battery usage)
I was having this issue myself and then i discovered that the Notification for Gmail had been turned off. Might not help every one but to check it
LONG PRESS GMAIL>APP INFO>Scroll down to App Settings
It kept turning back off so I had to turn it on and then back all the way to home and reboot for it to stick. Hope this helps!

no i done that, i done it i think it the very begging it was like my first idea or so, but the idea the person posted before you might actually do the trick
This is not new issue. I've had the same on SGS7e and didn't find a solution. This is why I've moved to "Inbox by Gmail", successor of "Gmail".
It's almost the same, even better than Gmail. Let it try guys, you won't be disappointed.
Issue here also... Anyone tried turning off battery optimization for the app?
I resolved this by removing the accounts, then adding them back.
had the same problem for the past 2 or 3 days. it originally was working fine. I checked every setting known to man, and it magically started working again.
I was originally not getting any push notifications but also realized that it was showing "queuing" everytime i sent an email so there was definitely an issue with it pushing things out too
Phone screen just flickers on and off when I get FB notifications. Seems like a glitch.
When this happens, is the phone in vibration mode? Other possibility is that you may have set a screen passcode recently and in the process also enabled hide sensitive notifications and it is possible that it may be interfering for phone to wake up on certain notifications. Are the FB messages from messenger present when you do wake the screen or do they show up right after you wake up the screen? You may have changed the phone sync settings or if you have enabled power saving mode, phone may not be checking for notifications from certain apps or in intervals or both, or if you or another app have disabled facebook messenger from syncing or changed background data settings (for example datally is an app from google helps save data if you don't have unlimited plan but in the process it disables most apps from connecting to internet by default).
I would suggest go in settings, then apps, then tap on three dots on top right, enable 'show system apps', then look for any apps related to facebook, click on each one go to 'storage' then 'clear data'. Make sure you do this for all of them before you go back into FB or messenger. You will have to log in FB again and it is quite possible that this will fix the issue if settings were the cause. (Edit: Try uninstall and reinstall the app). If it doesn't work, and you have checked through all the possibilities above, you may have to do a factory reset, setup the phone again and reinstall FB and Messenger app first then install a few apps at a time to try and catch any apps that might be responsible. One last possibility that i can think of is that it is also possible a recent update to the app by FB may have caused this bug instead of you or your phone.

That's an interesting point you make, because the phone is doing just that - The phone isn't actually vibrating until I hit the screen and wake it. So they're essentially showing up right after I wake the screen. This is despite the fact that the message was sent minutes beforehand, so it would've been received by all accounts. Appreciate the help!

Very likely you have the Battery saver feature turned on. When it is on, among other things, the background activity and data of apps get restricted. I am very sure that this is the cause for the issue you are having. You can either turn off Battery saver mode or add FB Messenger to the Power saving exclusions list to get your FB push notifications back.
Appreciate all the help man!
Great thank you!
