[Q] Disabled *checkin, *gtalk previously, re-enabled *checkin services, no syncing? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I disabled them as an effort to minimize wakelocks (similar to what is listed in this post)
It's definitely helped with getting better battery life but I prefer to have my email sync and LinkedIn sync back. They're all enabled but just don't sync unless I manually do it.
Can anyone advise? Screen caps of current enabled/disabled Google Services Framework attached
Edit: I've tried turning Sync off and turning back on, logging out and logging back in to the account, turning sync off and back on via the menu in Data Usage screen

Sorry, those screenshots are slightly incorrect. I did in fact re-enable the *checkin receivers and have rebooted the phone but still no "real time" syncing happening with my Gmail app.

Finally revisited this as my phone is still unable to sync notifications in "real time" at all.
I'm finding that checking all the "checkin" services/receivers under Google Services Framework via ROM Toolbox does not actually keep them checked (confirmed via refresh).
Any idea what is going on and how I can fix it?

[Q] Random apps starting up?

Why when I switch my phone on into Android, loads(about 15) apps are running in Advanced App Killer, such as Myspace, Mail etc, things i've not yet touched on my phone. I close them, but after a few hours i check what apps are running and random apps i've not opened(nor appear on screen) are showing?
Anyone else have this?
I think your apps are opening because you have auto data sync turned on. If you turn off sync of these accounts (mail, myspace) they probably won't be active.

oh thank you, stupid question but where do i find the setting to switch auto sync off?
*****More Info*****
Found it, was in an obvious Accounts & Sync menu, man i feel stupid lol, thanks
From the home screen, puss the menu then settings, go to accounts and sync. Disable auto sync and especially background data. You will definitely notice less apps opening up, but you will have to enable it again if you want to do certain things. I.e. market, gmail etc...

The problem with turning off Background data and Auto-sync is you will lose other useful features, e.g. GMail notification, weather updates, Market app (requires Background data) etc.
I use an app called "Startup Auditor" which allows you to manually turn off the programs you don't want to run upon startup, and additionally, auto-run after startup.
Hope this helps.

[Q] Cant stop sync

Like many others I have very poor battery life with my handset and if I forget to charge overnight it's empty in the morning.
To try and get as much out as possible I am disableing everything I can in terms of wifi, bluetooth and sync.
Now this is where I'm confused. The phone is linked to my Exchange server for contacts and email with push updates enabled. However even when I disable sync and background data I'm still having email pushed to the device.
This is definately not helping on the battery life front but short of doing a full reset and setup is there anywhere else I should be looking to turn this off when not needed?

you can't, what you can do is to change it to sync once every hr.
Go to Settings > Accounts and sync > Tab on your exchange account > Account Settings > Email check frequency, change it to "Every Hour"
and Amount to synchronize to "1 day", it won't delete email you have downloaded to SGS, it just don't try to sync older day data. --> This will help your battery life
Thats just daft.
Why have the options to disable sync if it's then compleatly ignored. Is this the same for the google account as well? I only have this on the phone for market access but will manually disable all sync on this account if it will help battery life.

Google Mail sync will be manual
even with 1 hr + 1 day setting, I get significant battery life improvement.

SOLVED auto-sync for exchange auto-turning off

This is driving me nuts. I check the autosync option in exchange account settings and it works fine for mail and contacts. But for calendar it just turns off. When I'm in calendar/settings/syncronize calendar, I turn it on again, and next day it's off again.
It's annoying that I have to manually sync, since I use the calendar because of my forgetfullness .
Version android 3.2 stock, build P7500xwkl1.
All the mentioned apps, mail, calendar, are stock apps.
Any ideas? tnx in advance.
same issue for me....
any idea?
solved
Solved!
And it's not a bug, it's a feature
Turning on power saving features also has an option "turn sync off when not syncronizing"... Just uncheck it and it is done.
I have the same issue but I don't use power saving mode, the 2 checkboxes are unchecked so I assume that the auto sync should not be affected by the low battery power...
Is there another setting for that?
Ok, I finally solved it, I use Setting Profile as profile manager and I don't know why but one of my profiles had one of its settings to turn off the auto sync data....

Google Services draining battery

Hello, in the last couple of days googleservices drain my battery more than screen. In the battery usage stats ,googleservices is everytime around 25-30%.
I disabled location settings (in the phone settings and in the google settings). im not using google now, nor any other google apps (books, games, music). nothing. What could be the reasons and is there any way what app or process causes so much "googleservices" activity?
Same issues here as well. 4.3 is very heavy on google services. had this issue on 4.3 note 2 as well but never had it on 4.1

Yes I actually mean both
Don't use Gmail and use integrated email client AND go to accounts > google > untick Sync Gmail.
Let me know how it goes! Ciao

Ok i disabled gmail sync so my gmail app doesnt work anymore, but i have a problem with adding gmail acc to my native email client. As far as i know it should work automatically when i enter username and pass and click next (i added my yahoo acc like that) but it says authentication failed.
I checked in my gmail settings, imap is enabled , so is there anything else i need to enter manually?

Do you use a two-steps log in for Gmail?
If so enter the Gmail app password. I do have 2 steps verification system and rather then entering my Gmail password I use the password I've got for my app account.
I'm sorry I can't be more precise but I reckon that is why you're not able to log in.
Ciao

thanx , it worked : ) will see if it reduces battery drain and will post here.
can you just explain me what does sync under native email client mean? i have now 2 accounts in native email client and they both have only sync option under account settings. should that be disabled as well even though i disabled it under google account settings?
If I disable gmail sync, should I keep the contacts sync on with gmail? or use the samsung contacts sync?
Same issues google has big sync to drain battery. Mine was 334mb today just for auto backup image

Terrible results.

Google play services is draining too much battery. Is anyone else experiencing this? It's really not normal to have more battery drain from this instead of screen on. On my note 2 this never happened and from 7:00 am to 11:00 PM my phone was at 50% with 3 hours of screen on and about 300 apps. Now with GN3 with this rom stock kernel and fresh install with about only 20 apps I can hardly go until 10:00 PM with only 2 hours screen on.

I am near to find solution. Hold on.

From 700+ wakelocks, I have reduced it to 340 after playing with autostarts. Also its not appearing in battery stats.

I actually had some results by going to Google settings and disabling some stuff from there including Google now etc. I will test tomorrow and if I see some good results I will explain in detail the settings I changed.

I hate having to turn that off because I want the Goggle Now services to work, and I've found on mine I keep all of that on and still get rid of the Google Services drain. The problem comes from the fact that even when you switch WiFi off, network location keeps it running all the time for location purposes. In 4.1 there was nothing you could do about it, but under 4.3 if you set the following:
Keep Wifi on during sleep > Never
Scanning always available > Unticked
This allows WiFi location to work when you're actually using Wifi, but not if it's only keeping Wifi on for location purposes. I have been running this for a while now, and the Google Services drain is pretty much gone, but full Google Now and Location Services are still available.
Just as a footnote - I'm not actually using the "Wifi during sleep" setting, I use DS Battery Saver Pro with a custom profile that just forces Wifi off when the screen is off, but the settings above should have the same effect.........

2 Problems, please help

I am having problem regarding my screen wake up. It wakes up from time to time automatically. I installed Wakelock Detector to track the app and found out Window manager has woken up the screen. How to disable it?
Another problem I have is callendar sync.
From time to time after restart my calendar sync disappears, I have no callendar at all and there is no ability to sync it in settings -> accounts -> google -> callendar simply becouse, IT DISSAPPEARS!!! After restar everything comes back to normal for few hours or to next restart....
HELP!!!
I have figured out what wakes phone... It was battery manager which draineg my battery... sic...
About the second problem, I can add that deleting google account and re-adding it also gives me back option to sync calendar for few hours...
Do not use unnecessary apps, unless it requires for purpose. Stock apps are enough according to me. These all are just fashionable, no real purpose. Some rungs in background and keeps ram and drains battery.
About the calendar/splaner app: again look for any aftermarket apps if anything causing this. remove if any apps for sync automated etc. From account uncheck google calendar sync or turn off Sync from notification then Go to apps > all apps and find the splanner and clear all data including cache memory. (If you have only google calendar, contact birthdays data then no probs, but all manual events will be gone.) After clearing restart the phone and again check calendar from account or enable sync. Let it sync or do a manual google sync and then check. check once and again restart the phone and then check again.
If this solve then fine otherwise do a factory reset or do a hard reset by holding power+home+vol button. Its clearly a app related issue.
