Google Services draining battery - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, in the last couple of days googleservices drain my battery more than screen. In the battery usage stats ,googleservices is everytime around 25-30%.
I disabled location settings (in the phone settings and in the google settings). im not using google now, nor any other google apps (books, games, music). nothing. What could be the reasons and is there any way what app or process causes so much "googleservices" activity?

Same issues here as well. 4.3 is very heavy on google services. had this issue on 4.3 note 2 as well but never had it on 4.1

Don't synch Gmail.
Use samsung email client and you'll see a BIG difference in terms of battery life

u mean, not to use gmail application and use integrated client for google emails instead or u mean disabling sync emails within google account sync options?

Yes I actually mean both
Don't use Gmail and use integrated email client AND go to accounts > google > untick Sync Gmail.
Let me know how it goes! Ciao

Ok i disabled gmail sync so my gmail app doesnt work anymore, but i have a problem with adding gmail acc to my native email client. As far as i know it should work automatically when i enter username and pass and click next (i added my yahoo acc like that) but it says authentication failed.
I checked in my gmail settings, imap is enabled , so is there anything else i need to enter manually?

Do you use a two-steps log in for Gmail?
If so enter the Gmail app password. I do have 2 steps verification system and rather then entering my Gmail password I use the password I've got for my app account.
I'm sorry I can't be more precise but I reckon that is why you're not able to log in.
Ciao

Hm, yes i activated 2 steps maybe few weeks ago, but im not quite sure which app password you mean. I have only one gmail password.
Oh, found it under google settings for 2 step verification. will try now.

thanx , it worked : ) will see if it reduces battery drain and will post here.
can you just explain me what does sync under native email client mean? i have now 2 accounts in native email client and they both have only sync option under account settings. should that be disabled as well even though i disabled it under google account settings?

If I disable gmail sync, should I keep the contacts sync on with gmail? or use the samsung contacts sync?

Same issues google has big sync to drain battery. Mine was 334mb today just for auto backup image

Terrible results.

Google play services is draining too much battery. Is anyone else experiencing this? It's really not normal to have more battery drain from this instead of screen on. On my note 2 this never happened and from 7:00 am to 11:00 PM my phone was at 50% with 3 hours of screen on and about 300 apps. Now with GN3 with this rom stock kernel and fresh install with about only 20 apps I can hardly go until 10:00 PM with only 2 hours screen on.

I am near to find solution. Hold on.

From 700+ wakelocks, I have reduced it to 340 after playing with autostarts. Also its not appearing in battery stats.

I actually had some results by going to Google settings and disabling some stuff from there including Google now etc. I will test tomorrow and if I see some good results I will explain in detail the settings I changed.

I hate having to turn that off because I want the Goggle Now services to work, and I've found on mine I keep all of that on and still get rid of the Google Services drain. The problem comes from the fact that even when you switch WiFi off, network location keeps it running all the time for location purposes. In 4.1 there was nothing you could do about it, but under 4.3 if you set the following:
Keep Wifi on during sleep > Never
Scanning always available > Unticked
This allows WiFi location to work when you're actually using Wifi, but not if it's only keeping Wifi on for location purposes. I have been running this for a while now, and the Google Services drain is pretty much gone, but full Google Now and Location Services are still available.
Just as a footnote - I'm not actually using the "Wifi during sleep" setting, I use DS Battery Saver Pro with a custom profile that just forces Wifi off when the screen is off, but the settings above should have the same effect.........

I had a similar problem. Then I just found out today that if you disable Google Talk from starting up (like everybody was advising to save battery life) then Gmail push does not work right. I let Google Talk start up now, and now my push services work... better.

So just go to settings in the talk app and have it automatically sign in? Will have to check his settings tonight and will report back if that fixes it. Thanks!

Make sure that data syncing did not get turned off either. You can also try to manually sync your accounts through menu-settings-accounts and sync. Then choose sync all
I had an identical problem where even manual sync stopped working for now reason.
I added a second gmail account with the same account info and the primary.
After I did that it was like it merged the two and it started working again.

[Q] Primary gmail account syncing problems

I have not made any changes to the settings but all of a sudden my phone is not consistently syncing with my gmail account. It only syncs every once in a while and it does not sync all the unread emails.
I have tried a reboot by taking the battery out.
Can anyone think of anything else I can do? Thanks in advance for the help.
Have you checked your Account Sync settings (Menu > Settings > Accounts & Sync) yet? Any errors? Sometimes you'll see a red splat letting you know an account can't currently sync. Usually, this is just a temporary issue.
I'll wait to speculate anything else until you can post more info about what you're seeing in your Accounts & Sync settings.
No errors. No ideas.

Man, we're going to need some more info. Did it ever work? What does "once in a while" mean? There's no such thing as random...
It's worked for the last 4 weeks perfectly. My phone was getting gmail faster then the gmail app on my laptop.
Yesterday I received 25 gmails but it only synced one of them. Hmm, I wonder if it could be the new gmail "priority" email thing since the one email that did sync was a friend and the others may have been ads. But I don't see a setting for that.

Yeah, I'd look into that whole Priority Inbox thing. I'm not using that at all because I just don't need it - and I run my own business and still don't need it. It sounds like something "superficial" is at play here. If you weren't syncing you'd truly just not be syncing - or would have errors in the Accounts & Sync area.
As far as I can tell, the whole Priority Inbox thing is managed server-side - i.e. I don't see an option for it within the Android app. Considering no one else is having a similar issue (and those who are using Priority Inbox know what to expect, so they aren't seeing an "issue" on their phone), I would suspect a setting/configuration/option as the problem; and not an actual problem with syncing.
Keep us all posted though! What users expect from software and what software actually does, are two different things...
Thanks for the help. I don't think I did anything to resolve the problem. It just started working again. Maybe it was a gmail thing.
Thanks again.

I've noticed similar behavior once in a while.. i found that unchecking and rechecking the mail sync checkbox in sync settings will temporarily resolve it.. and it doesn't happen very often.
I've always thought it maybe had to do with me toggling the gsm only/wcdma gsm auto settings as I go to and from my house and/or the combination of manually turning mobile data on and off (all battery management exercises) so I just leave mobile data on now (still have always on data off.. this was going to be my next thing I tried if it kept up) and it seems to happen less often but still once in a blue moon it'll hang..
I also use priority inbox but haven't had any other evidence that led me to believe that this was the culprit.

Exchange Service wakelock killing my battery

Hi, I moved from a Galaxy Nexus 2 weeks ago.
I'm running the lastest CM 10.1 Nightly and Franco Kernel.
Like I week ago I noticed a very high wakelock caused by "Exchange Service". I'm using my Hotmail account configured as Exchange with the stock email android App.
I didn't have that wakelock before with my SGN or the first week using my N4.
I don't know what to do, I have tried deleting the account and setting the update interval to 1 hour.
Any ideas?
This is making me crazy

Check this out:
It goes to deep sleep, but there are some wakelocks made by:
Calendar, Exchange and Gtalk (Which is strange as I have it frozen using TIBU).

This is what happens when people have too much information at their finger tips.
I see 3mins and 6 mins of wakelocks there in 10hrs? How is that "killing" your battery?

Sorry but I still think there is something wrong.
494 wakelock ? With push email off? It was supposed to check the email each 2 hours. No contact and calendar sync.. OK all the wakelocks were "only" 12 minutes... I had it configured in the same way with my gnex and never had this problem.
Thanks.

I understand your point.. But I was sure that before (using my gnexus and the first week using my n4) I had the same configuration and I wasn't getting these wake locks. Remember push it's not active ! And gmail (sync is on) and whatsapp are running all the time and they don't generate almost any wakelocks...

Sorry guys but I think there must be something wrong here.
It's only syncing one account and the refresh rate is set to 1h!!! I get barely 10 emails daily and don't reply them.
It looks like there is a mistake in the configuration of exchange and it ends in a loop.
Plus I don't even use the calendar, I have like 10 entries in all the year!! It doesn't make sense.
I use whatsapp 10 times more than email and calendar combined and I don't see it generating so mane wake locks.

I was thinking of doing that. Forwarding all my emails to my gmail account. This is a serious problem. As you say we get wakelocks (a lot of them) even with hot mail sync off!! Wtf
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I was able of removing the wakelock doing the following:
Using titanium backup made "exchange services" a user app.
Added to greenify
BUT the only problem is that now I have to open the email app to get my emails.. Trying to avoid this with tasker but tasker doesn't work with processes like exchange service.
Battery life has improved!!

It's not just you
It's not just you. Something is definitely wrong.
I have had this problem since ICS 4.0 on my Nexus S.
I've tried stock and am now running CM 10.1. This morning my stock battery stats show 3h 17m on battery and Exchange Services with 1h 5m of "Keep awake". Battery is down to 58%. That makes the battery life about 6 hours. Yesterday, I got 14.
This problem goes away every time I flash a ROM update, but will always recur after a few weeks. If I disable sync, everything is fine. It doesn't seem to matter whether the Exchange Sync setting are set to Email, Calender, or Contacts. It also doesn't seem to matter how often sync is set for: push, 30 min, 1 hour, or 3 hours -- the problem still persists unless sync is off in the OS.
I would love suggestions on what to do.

[Q] Gmail not working

Starting last night Gmail does not push any email to my phone. Any ideas what happened? Could I have stopped a process that it needs(not Gmail app)?
Did you check your settings? Not trying to be am a$$. Only reason I ask is cause Ive run the root process twice on my Note 3 so far. First time everything was fine. Second time I had to sign in tp google twice, and sync for gmail and other sync options weren't checked

I had this issue. I turned on WiFi and it started to push my emails. I turned it off and it seemed to work fine.
I tried it but it did not seem to work although I was not connected only had WiFi on.
I had this happen too. I had to go into gmail settings, and then click on my email addy. On this page go to the "manage labels" button and make sure your boxes are set to sync and notify. I use like 5 different inboxes so I had to enable sync for each one. It took me forever to find this and I was going insane trying everything to enable sync. I still have no idea what causes this activity.
I've had this happen on galaxy devices. I usually go to Gmail and clear and restore defaults then that usually fixes it. If not then go to accounts and sync and disable sync then re-enable it. One of those should work

I saw that the notify flag was off so I turned it on. I will see if that fixs the problem.

[Q] GMAIL problem

I have lately bought a Nexus 4. Everything is fine except for a very important issue i have encountered: that is the GMAIL app performance with both 3G and Wifi on. More specifically, most of the times my emails take too long to arrive and sometimes i do not even get a notification. Sometimes, i have to run the application and see that i have some new emails. I have also noticed that if i cut 3G or Wifi and put them again on (of course not simultaneously) the email that was supposed to have already arrived, arrives then. So, its like GMAIL app loses connection after sometime. My OS version is 4.4.2. Is there any bug or something to do about it. I handle my work emails through Gmail and it is vital for me to find a solution. Any suggestions?
With kikat google syncs a lot of things at once. I would recommend to disable some of the apps sync. Especially Google photos, Google +photos.
Settings> Accounts > Google > click on the gmail account > uncheck the one you don't really need to be auto syncing every minute. If you have more than one email sync to your phone; apply same process to those emails as well.
Now reboot and that should fix it.

I did what you suggested and now it seems to work fine. However, I also enabled the auto-backup property of the Photos app, as it is reported to cause otherwise a problem. Thank you for your help!
