You may use an app such as System Tuner to watch your CPU temperature. Mine get 50 celcius after 15minutes playing NFS MW... I dont know if it is still normal.
What version are you on? Mine used to be uncomfortably warm, but since 4.2.2, that has been fixed for me.

Hi,
It feels hot... its very subjective without a real measured CPU or battery temp. Like opticaldh said, install an app with monitoring CPU temp and see. What kernel ?
Also what is the battery temp?

I am on Franco kernel, fast CPU, UV 150 (Default for 384Hz is 850, now it is 700). That's what makes me worry.
My Nexus has been getting uncomfortably hot. I first noticed it last night after getting to a friends place and took the phone out. It was really hot and the battery had dropped about 20% for a 15 minute drive. I checked the battery and Google Maps was showing at the top with the most usage even though it wasn't enabled.
I then proceeded to check the settings in Maps and turned off all the location tracking stuff which was unfortunately enabled.
However, even today my phone was again quite warm after driving around. Battery didn't even show Google Maps so that wasn't the cause.
It may have something to do with signal issues always trying to get the strongest signal as it doesn't happen when I am at home and not moving around.

Only way to really reduce heat without an impact on performance would be to undervolt. Another way would be to underclock. Both you need a custom kernel to do.

Matrix kernel runs at 288 MHz when idling, you can under volt it at around 650ma there.
I am running Motley kernel, idling at 308 MHz, UV at 700 ma. The only time I notice my n4 getting hot is when I use GPS and charging simultaneously.

Hi all I have spent same time in last days playing Real Racing 3. Very nice game.
While playing the temperature of my N4 became very high. It's a 1.5 quadcore with GPU working hard so it should be normal. But I saw, in system tuner, that while gaming it can reach even 70 Celsius. Is it normal this temperature in gaming or should I be worried?
What about your temperature in gaming?
PS: for the battery this game can drain all the battery in less than 2 hours, but even this should be normal because without gaming it usually reach 4 hours screen on, so 2 hours of hard gaming should be normal.

mine gets 49celcius after 20mins of NFS MW Used to get 58celcius after 1 hours. But sometimes I feel it's normal after 20min of NFS, maybe it depends on the stage I am playing

I think your temp is normal.
I use stock rom, franco kernel, UV 150, fast CPU bin.

Ok maybe common but IMO this temperatures are pretty high. I just hope to not damage my device to play sometime. Heat is the worst enemy of electronic components.
And for this I like UV a bit but I don't know if CyanogenMod kernel makes different voltages according to different CPU binning.

Got my n4 just yesterday and immediately started downloading Hd intense games
and because of all the playing I have to charge my phone twice a day now...
ive seen 100C cpu temp on my device, then again i was trying to reach it. i wouldnt worrry too much about the heat. if your device gets warm enough then the heat throttle will automatically kick in. itll reduce your cpu speed and cool down the device. if you keep pushing your device past the thermal throttle, itll eventually hit the automatic thermal safety shutdown temp, which will automatically turn off your device to cool it down.

Good to know that I'm not the only one with this temperatures... In first moment I thought of down clocking GPU and CPU... But damn it's not possible to have a mobile with quad core and powerful GPU that can't handle the heat. So I hope they managed it well and get used to a burning phone while gaming.

Generally, you should not let your phone temperature get greater than 50°C. Otherwise, you risk permanently heat-damaging the battery.

100C is the safety shutdown temp for the nexus 4, your phone wont melt at that temp. my gnex has hit 110C many many times, thats the shut down temp for the gnex.
you have to realize that there are two different temp readings, cpu temp and battery temp. while your battery reaching 50C isnt safe, 50C for the cpu is still relatively cool, and does not put your phone into danger.

I download a battery temperature reader and a CPU temperature measurer. At Idle the batter temperature is at about 33-36 degrees Celsuis. And the CPU temperature at Idle is usually in the lower 40's at idle. Are these Temperatures to high?
Also When I plays games or use any apps for a just a few minutes the battery Temperatures get at around 40 degress C and the CPU temp is usually around the 45-50 area. Again Are these temperature to high?
I would really appreciate if anyone could give me useful help on this issue I'm having with my phone.

I'm assuming your Nexus 4 is a newer one (rev. 11). Nexus 4s have been known to run quite hot. My rev. 10 is at 42 C coming out of sleep without use, earlier when I played Need for Speed, it got to 60 C. It seems to be normal for mine, although it does get uncomfortably hot.

completely normal. right smack in the middle of the range of normal. remember, human body temperature average is 37C or 98.6F. when you use your device, the temp will go up when you use a cpu intensive game, the temperature will get even hotter. this all also depends on the surrounding air temperature. the warmer it is around, the warmer the device will get or idle.
Normal. Because the back is made of glass, it absorbs the heat and you feel it more than other phones.

Hmm, That seems weird, if the phone throttles you at 37 degrees shouldn't my phone not be idling at that temperature, and the my front screen seems to get warm after slight usage to. And looking on other forums people with a stock nexus 4 said that there phone idles around mid twenties, not the lower-mid thirties.

for hard working with QuadCore it s normal to get ~40 C quickly
But after 40C i think it s not normal and it s better to ask official service

look at the time they were posted. now its warmer eveeywhere. and again, human body temp is 37C. you have a quad core phone, it WILL get hot at times, that is normal. pushing the device, you might even see 70C or 75C.

Hmm okay I have pushed the phone and the highest CPU temp I reached was about 60ish. I'm not exactly worried about how hot it gets, it's just how fast it gets hot, it seems a little odd that just running facebook and twitter for a few minutes can get the battery temperature up to 40 degrees celsius.

That sounds similar to the results that I have found on the web, people said that to get there battery temperature up to 40 degress they have to push the phone, mine gets there just by opening a few apps.
If you want to cool it down and you are happy with messing about with your phone, try undervolting the CPU. Although I tend not to check the temperature, my phone (UVd by around -150) feels far cooler; playing Real Racing it doesn't get as warm as simple browsing would on stock.

I have heard of this, but I'm more focused on how the temperature should be on this phone untampered. Rooting and tweaking kind of scares me a bit.

40C is not hot. get that out of your head. idle temp will depend on the air temperature around you. yesterday was 91 in nyc, my phone was idling between 39-42C. stick your hand in 40C water, itll barely feel warm.

On a surface like metal it would, but not in water. That said, the back of the phone isn't water but I'm sure the temperature of the back of the phone is lower than the CPU

Couldn't agree more, The back of the phone I wouldn't say it HOT, but it is definitely very warm. But I'm not talking about how hot the phone feels. I'm trying to ask about the internal temperatures and if it's normal for it to heat up so fast.

again. this is normal. 104F would not feel more than slightly warm water.
the glass in the back of the phone is there to draw out the heat from the phone. its glass, and will feel warm. if you have problems with 40C, then i would recommend that you buy a dumb phone. my nexus 7, galaxy nexus, and nexus 4 all idle a bit warmer now than in winter. 40C is very normal.

The nexus 4 is definitely a great phone for a low price.But people are not buying this phone because of this THERMAL THROTTLING.so,people listen nexus 4 even runs smooth with thermal throttling going on.so, this fix is for people who just dont want thermal throttling.Before we start,this fix requires ROOT and a custom recovery.And a custom kernel needs to be flashed.so if you do any damage to your phone by doing this,I'm NOT RESPONSIBLE.
So first download the faux kernel for nexus 4(codename mako. if you see mako on faux website its for nexus 4) from here: Faux's website which i cannot post because im new to XDA. you can find it by googling for faux kernel website.I recommend the TBM kernels such as mako-jb-kernel 016 tbm which lets you overclock CPU to 1.83 Ghz.But theres also TBU kernels which support overclocking to 1.94 GHz.
Step 1 now download a faux kernel of your choice.
Step 2 paste the kernel to your mobile
Step 3 Boot into recovery mode
Step 4 Wipe cache
Step 5 Wipe dalvik cache
Step 6 Install .zip kernel
Step 7 Reboot your phone
Step 8 Now you have to buy the faux123 kernel enhancement program from play store(this app is from faux and this has intelli-thermal built in it)

With his enhancement app yes you can control throttling but the problem is that because the phones CPU is getting way too hot, so increasing the throttle threshold or limit basically makes it so when your gaming, it makes things smoother however your CPU is burning faster.

it throttles to 1.3 or sometimes to 1.2 ghz when temp is 37C and to 1.1 ghz when temp is 39C

No it has a thermal manager which controls the heat.if it heats up it automatically turns off 1 or 2 cores so that means 2 cores wil still run normally but the other 2 cores will shutdown.

i always turn off throttling, on every device i own(ed). they all live long lives, and are the best performers around(for their model). they never ever got damaged because of it, and im an extrely heavy user. my n4 has had all throttling disabled since jan 14th, and its still going strong. the difference is that i never complain that my phone turns down cpu speed, or does my phones performance get slowed down.

Yes, but if you disable it to have maximum performance clearly you're not throwing s*** , which in turn in the long run may burn your CPU

The nexus 4 throttling is caused by the battery reaching a certain temperature not the CPU. It's poor design/cooling system causes heat to build up which raises the temperature of the battery. Once it reaches a low 37 degrees the cpu/gpu are downclocked even if they are well within their limits.

the n4 has a battery temp throttle AND a cpu temp throttle.
i generally disable both the battery and cpu temp throttles, but leave both safety temps as is. for those that say "oh, the extra heat will eventually ruin the phone".. the temp doesnt get any hotter than it does when you normally use your phone, the difference is that you dont get throttled. and even if there was extra heat because of, im not planning on having my phone for the amount of time that the extra heat will take to ruin the phone(years).
Hey everybody I have the "problem"that my n4 heats up very quickly on 3g until 50-60°celsius. Is this normal ?

It must be because you are using apps or games that like high frequencies
Either undervolt or spend less time using your phone

What to you mean heat up? the temperature of the battery or you have a thermometer on the phone? and do not take the temperature while the phone is charging. it supposed to go up!!!
mine battery temp is about 25 degrees with a max of 30-32. ambient room temp is around 20 degrees and the phone is not in direct sunlight. note that my cpu is undervolted (150mv down) and underclocked (at 1350mhz) but playing games the temp doesn't go more than 32.
in some forums i have read that it is normal the back of the phone to heat up because it is plastic and plastic does not spread heat like aluminum.
hope i shed some light...

thx for ur answer but im talking about the cpu temperature not about the battery temperature. for battery temperature i hav the same values like you. my cpu is also undervolted until nearly -200mv^^. but anyway thx.

how can you see the cpu temp?? the nexus4 as far as i know has not any sensors for the cpu temp

after about 5 mins of gaming (riptide gp2 that has quite heavy graphics) with wifi and 3g on the temp of my cpy via trickstermod is about 42-43 degrees when i immediately leave the game. if you need me to check anything else feel free to ask.

thx for checking whats about your display brightness because i only get 50 degrees if im on 100%

with brightness set to 100% i hit 49 degrees afte 5 mins gaming with wifi and 3g enabled. that is normal (i think) if you consider that the thermal throttling kicks in at 70 degrees (checked it in franco kernel updater)
edit: before the brightness was set to auto so i think it was about 15-20%
It's normal to get around 50 degrees on 3G or more during gaming.

This. My CPU temps have often hit 80C when playing graphics intensive games. So don't worry about it and enjoy your phone!

Isn't that a bit high? Isn't the CPU clocked down when reaching 70 degrees?
I have experienced that sometimes... Then even a quad core becomes very slow

I have thermal throttling set to 85C. So no downclock until that temperature is reached.
