I'm thinking about buying it, but my impression was the updates comes straight from Google. And then I found some threads saying Verizon was holding back 4.2 from the GNex, which I thought was ridiculous because that's the entire appeal. Anyone know if they will hit the Nexus 4 right away? The GNex isn't on T-Mobile of course, so I don't know how to look that up.
Well wouldn't that be Verizon holding back and not Google? Since that phone came from Verizon and not directly

Yes, that's what I said. But I will still be using a carrier (T-Mobile), so the question is whether T-Mobile will hold back the updates.
Well if you get the nexus thru T-Mobile who knows what they'll do with updates. I got my phone off amazon unlocked.
And I popped on my sim and immediately it started downloading my 4.2.1 update

I doubt it. From what I've gathered, they are selling you the same phone as it's sold in the play store, just with a contract. Everything is just....Google. Even so, you could just flash it manually if you'd like.
This is an international unlocked, it will get update faster than any other Android devices. Currently there are no carrier locked version. The one sold by T-Mobile is unlocked and exactly the same, it will receive updates from Google, T-Mobile do not do anything with the software.
The reason the Galaxy Nexus Verizon don't get update as fast because its CDMA network and they had to take time to test things and put in all their software.
Exactly. The T-Mobile nexus is the same in every way to the play store nexus. Not even a yakju takju like difference. They are the same hardware and software.

The simple answer to the question is:
YES, the nexus 4 will get the most timely updates of any android phone out there.
The longer answer is:
The updates will come directly from Google. The day Google releases an Android update, it will be available to every Nexus 4.
LG has nothing to do with software on the Nexus 4. LG will have nothing to do with any of the software updates (for example, what happens when Samsung needs to modify Touchwiz for a new Android version). That is what makes Nexus phones different than the rest of Android phones out there.
Also, the carriers will have nothing to do with the software on the Nexus 4. So the carriers will not be delaying any updates by adding their proprietary stuff and bloatware packages to the system.
There will be no delays caused by either manufacturers or carriers. This is the opposite of most phones, that have updates delayed by both the manufacturers and carriers.
What happened to the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon has nothing to the Nexus 4. The software delays for the Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus were due to Verzion. And that is part of the reason why the Nexus 4 is not available on Verizon this time around!
Been a Sumsung geek all these years. Not a fan of this bootloader crap. I discover the Nexus 6 has 6 inch screen. WOO HOO, not a big loss compared to my Mega. I go into ATT store.....where is the Nexus 6? I'm sorry, we had to pull them from stock due to software issue. Dont know when we will get them back. Not available online either.
Anybody want to speculate?

No speculation needed. There was a firmware glitch with their shipments. Moto pulled them and is sending new ones.

AT&T recalled all N6. Rumor has it, Android Donut was installed on AT&T Nexus 6
Sent from my Nexus 6
Lol donut. It was 4.4.4 which is hilarious
I preorderd and got mine from AT&T
I preordered and got mine delivered on Friday. Came with Lollipop OS, was easily able to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, root. I did have to go into the retail store for a bump case, as the Nexus 6 Dropped thread made me nervous with just the bodyguardz glass screen protector... so at least some of them were right. I feel for you guys who have to wait. I think this is going to be a HUGE black eye for the evil empire.
I'm sure donut would be blazing fast on N6 hardware.

Are there any sprint users here? I've used HTC for all of my Android life and it's time to move on to true Android in Nexus. Only thing is, I'm hesitant because I haven't seen any sprint feedback. Can you guys assure me, this purchase in N6P is well worth it?
I'm on Sprint and I don't know what else to say other than, it's totally worth it
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk 2
I'm on sprint. And it is worth it since it can also be used on other carriers if you ever decide to switch.
I'm happy with this phone on Sprint. Call quality and signal strength are excellent.
I do miss Sprint Visual VM and WiFi calling tho. These services can be approximated by Google Voice and Hangouts, but are not as seamless as Sprint offerings.
Regardless, well worth the switch
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
It's without a doubt worth it. I was a real HTC fanboy back when i was a pup, had the Hero, then EVO, then EVO 3D, then EVO LTE . . . then I got a Nexus 5 and I just am not going back. That's also happens to be around the time that HTC took it's dive (that its currently still plummeting into, sadly, they wrecked shop for a few years there, record profits Q over Q, Y over Y). They need to resurrect the EVO line and bring back the kickstand, because that thing was the tits.
Anyway, everything on the Now Network with the 6P has been top shelf, have no fear.
There's a sprint users thread already

i went to exhange my N7 today. If only they had the v20 in already. what a missed opportunity over the next 2 weeks...
I went back (2nd time exchanging it) to s7 edge. I hope the v20 is out in less than 2 weeks.

I've read the 28th of October is launch for US carriers, im holding onto the explosively disappointing N7 untill v20 is available
Pre-orders start the 17th. At least T-mobile they do. I didn't want to return my Note 7, however I travel a lot and don't want a bunch of crap from airlines or TSA about having a note 7 on me. So I'm considering getting the V20 or just stick with my Note 5 another year. 5.7 inches is as small as I wanna go.
Sent from my SM-N920T using XDA-Developers mobile app
I had the Note 7 and every Note since the 3. I returned my Note 7 during the 1st recall to wait for the V20.
i had a note 7. have been waiting for the V20 since they did the initial recall on the notes 7. just using my note 4 for now until i can finally get theV20
I'm looking to get the v20 as well. Preordering is next week.. But Samsung doesn't have a refund procees here yet... So I'm still waiting.
I love my note 7 but if they are not going to support it i suppose I will have to get another phone. the v20 is about the only phone that interest me. not much out there as far as phones for AT&T and not going iPhone.

Do you guys know of any devs who are jumping ship from N7 to V20?
Possibly looking to V20 from Note7 but due to gap I've ordered a OnePlus 3 and since found out thats not available fro 3 weeks either arrrgghh
Went to local AT&T store & pre-ordered the v20, to be shipped to me. When I get it, I bring in the N7 to the store.
I have to pre-pay the tax on the v20, and when I turn in the N7 they refund the tax (and any payments I've made on my Next plan).
BTW, it took them an hour to figure out how to do it - even after I kept telling them what to do after going through it already with the original Note 7.
(If I don't return the Note 7, then I will just keep getting charged for both phone....)
OH - they did have a v20 on the floor to play with as well. Oddly, my store didn't have a v10. If they did, I would likely have gotten it as a loaner, and returned it for the v20 - but would have cost a $35 restocking fee. Guess I can risk a fireball for 2 weeks.
--
Edit: For me, the v20 is mostly a wash against the N7. Similar cpu, memory, size, camera, usb-c. Differences are losing waterproof, pen & wireless charging (which I didn't use), gaining removable battery & second screen. Never had a LG phone before, so hope quality is good.
I'm switching from the Note7 too. Glad to see I'm not the only one. Just waiting for the phone to come out so I can get it from Verizon and trade in my Note. Hate getting rid of this phone but the V20 looks like a great phone. Since it already has 7.0 I wonder how long it'll take them to get 7.1 on it.

Just refunded my Note 7 with T-Mobile. I plan on pre-ordering the V20 first thing Monday morning as soon as it becomes available. I was sorely tempted by the Axon 7, but with two toddlers I need a good camera on my phone and the V20 is the only large phone with a good camera other than the Note 7. I'm looking forward to it since I loved the V10.
Done with Samsung and the note 7 for now. I just can't decide between the V20 or the Axon 7 and then there's the Oneplus 3
i exchange mine and wifes N7's today. she opted for the S7 edge. I went back to my note 4 and pre-ordered a V20. they said it will ship between the 24th and 27th.
we're due 2 x $25 from the first recall and $125 from the second now. plus bill credits for the note 7 payments....and i ended up with 2 x 256gb cards that work in each of the new phones so that's a plus.
the s7edge will use wireless charging pads so i'm keeping 2 of the 4 i bought and the V20 works with the type C usb cables so i can use all of those.
overall it works out that i only need to ebay 2 wireless chargers.
Waiting on the v20 to come out too. I can't go smaller than 5.7 , so no pixel for me
Damn, this is too SAD moving away from the Note Series!
I had the LG G3 and G4, loved then then went back to Notes. Loved the Note 7 but have a feeling there will be no updates to the phone. I doubt any devs will pitch in either. Looking at V20, only phone ill go to. Holding it for 2 more weeks.

Tried doing the same thing as you did, but they wouldn't let me do it unless I left the store without my Note7. In other words, I had to give them my Note7 right then and there.
I don't have any extra phone lying around, and I NEED a phone for work, personal use, and emergencies (accident, 911, etc). I have no land lines either.
So we ended up cancelling the preorder and now I have to wait until the 28th.

I did both a google and a forum search and couldn't find a definite answer. I know it'll work on the network, but is everybody getting their employee and month to month discounts?
After the run around they gave us with the Nexus 6 I wanted to make sure before I buy.
You could always ask Verizon themselves?

Simple answer if you have an already activated Verizon SIM card: Buy a Nexus 6P. Turn both old phone and 6P off. Put your old SIM card into the 6P. Power it up.
Whoila!! Verizon 6P, without having to even hassle with calling or stopping into a Verizon store, and absolutely nothing on your plan will change. Win win win.
I've done the above 5 times on different lines, and I have to say I'll never visit a Verizon store or call them again if I can help it. So far it's going pretty well!
I activated mine online using the Verizon website.

Yeah, I could ask 3-4 CS reps and get 3-4 different answers. I know better.
Thanks for the replies but I'm not concerned about activating it, I'll just plug my Nexus 6 sim card in. Just wanted to verify that they're not pulling employee and m2m discounts on non Verizon devices. Looked through the threads here and as there isn't an uproar about it I'll assume that they aren't.
Thanks again.

At one point we had 3 of the 5 lines on our family plan running N6P's, and still have continued to get the employer discount we always have. So nothing in our plan has changed. But again, I haven't ever even contacted Verizon I've just swapped SIM's as every time I do that I risk something happening as who knows what bonehead you'll get to "help" you

OK thanks, that's what I was wondering. I couldn't remember if I had to enter the imei online. And I made the mistake of letting a CS bone head "help" me once. It only took a couple weeks to fix it afterwards....
On Verizon and getting my discounts for more than a year.
+1 on discount
+2 on discount. I went to the store to activate mine. I didn't have a sim to fit the 6P and didn't want to cut mine down. I had read through a bunch of forums about problems getting it activated and was well prepared. The store reps told me it couldn't be done but I had all the info at hand on how to do it and "helped" them through it. The only issue I had is when I used the upgrade that was available on my line to get my son a phone. The next month my bill went up. My line was no longer receiving the $25.00 discount. I called and the rep told me it was only available for Verizon phones. I don't know how many people I talked to before it was fixed but it turned out to be some computer glitch.
+1
More reasons to hate Verizon.
I've been using the Nexus 6p on this Verizon. I switch between an iphone 7 plus and the nexus 6p all the time. And no issues.

Same here. Have a 6P on Verizon with employee discount.
Just wish it was simple as transfering the Google Dialer from the Pixel to the 6P for the built in visual voicemail.
I just use google voice for voicemail. It works great at texting me/emailing me transcripts.
I decided to go for it and found a fair deal on a new one that'll be here tomorrow. Spigen Rugged Armor case, screen protectors and spare chargers have been sitting here since Saturday. Haven't used Google Voice in a few yrs but I'll figure it out. Thanks again for the replies.

Hi, I have a 5X and ordered a Verizon prepaid SIM Kit. My plan is to first put the SIM in an old iPhone 4s that used to be on Verizon as it is a CDMA iPhone 4s. Then, once the SIM is active I will swap it to the 5X and it should work fine from what I have found researching this.
Does anyone know if Verizon has recently added the 6P and 5X to their "okay" to activate list as I can avoid the swapping if so?
