We're gonna be obsolete
Not me I am getting it day one!! That of course if its on T-mobile!!!
I'll stick with my Nexus S until Ice Cream sees a .1 or .2 update, work some bugs out. The Nexus S won't be 18 months old until next May.
ehmm. this year:
phone= NO!
tab= YES.
next year:
phone=YES
tab=yes?
nothing in that post/blog or w/e
says its coming this year.
and google never did and never will bring a new nexus the same year as the nexus S(in this case)if its a phone.it has been confirmed google was looking for a nexus tab for this year.
Well, if it will have better specs than the SGSII, I may sell my Nexus S and pay the difference for the upgrade. What I really want in a phone is stutter-free 720p HD-Video recording which the SGSII will have.
Of course I'd prefer a Nexus family phone over the SGSII, so here's to hoping they release it soon!
Right now, Ice Cream Sandwich is scheduled for release in Q4. Which makes it pretty safe to say we won't see it until Q4 2011 at the earliest. Assuming they make the new Nexus the launch platform (or at least launch it with Ice Cream Sandwich stock), that means we're not going to see it until September or later, which would be roughly on par with the amount of time that passed between the releases of the Nexus One and Nexus S.
In short, I don't think we need to be imminently concerned. Anyway, I expect Ice Cream Sandwich will get released officially for the Nexus S in relatively short order once it is available. Google has been pretty good about that to date with the Nexus One. The only thing that might be considered "obsolete" about the Nexus S by then will be its hardware, and if the way the market has been developing lately is any indication, that'll happen whether Google releases a new Nexus or not. Everyone here knew when the Nexus S was released that dual core and other fun things were just over the horizon, and they bought it anyway. None of this is really news.
hmm, since ice cream sandwich is only coming in q4, i guess it's safe to say this 'new phone' won't come out till then. and q4 is kinda the time we got our nexus s. makes perfect sense to me
EDIT: aw dammit, i started typing then afked. now i realise my post just looks like a summary of zorak90's.
Yeah, so far Google's track record has been roughly every 11 months. So Q4 would make sense.
The announcement about 18 month support for phones is perfect for me, I get free hardware upgrades with my plan at 18 month intervals.
18 months is a long time in the cell world and I'll revisit what i want as a device then. I know my current one is probably a little outdated, but it's fast for what i need, it's got prompt (well somewhat.. still waiting on 2.3.4) updates and will probably be supported for much longer then the 18 months (if the nexus one is any indication)
I'm not too worried.
Im not surprised they anounced a new nexus it is Google I/O.
Next I/O wont be till next year...after the timeframe the next nexus is due

Let me just point out- since the Nexus One is playing a prominent role in this discussion- that although I don't expect the Nexus One to not get Ice Cream Sandwich, I also think the ground to expect it will is shaky. Let's all remember that the Nexus One was released in January 2010, which was sixteen months ago now. Ice Cream Sandwich isn't due out until September at the earliest. Now Google seems to be pushing the 18 month support standard, which would put Ice Cream Sandwich outside the N1's support period. Since these announcements all came on the same day, it seems to me that Google is (among other, more honorable motives) maneuvering to excuse itself from the responsibility of upgrading the N1 should doing so prove impractical for them.
I too am excited, and if Google does what they did with the Nexus S we could see it launch with Ice Cream. I am just hoping they bring more new things. I am so buying it if it comes to T-Mobile.

from what was mentioned before, it's not going to be the SGS2, but rather another incarnation of LG Dual Core
some one already leaked this out a couple of months back, just search the forum messages
The Nexus has been the device we’ve used to set the bar. The market works in cycles that revolves around the holidays and summertime. We’ll make an announcement in the future.

Christmas
And I'll bet Sprint gets it at release (in addition to T-Mobile)
This announcements seems like bad timing for the Nexus S 4G return window!
Looks like I will be holding onto my Evo till Q4...
They didn't really confirm anything about a new Nexus. They did, however, say they're gonna have Ice Cream Sandwich out in about 6 months, which is realistically when a new Nexus would come out. So...probably yes, but till like a year after the Nexus S launched. Money on December or so.
the article was rather obscure just saying that another google branded phone will be developed some time in the future...
we were all expecting quite a lot when we heard the nexus s was going to be released considering samsung did not follow through on some of the other features promised early on during development (gorilla glass, tv out, hd video).
despite this im still happy and to all our nexus one people there are very few hardware differences between the two so i doubt that google will stop updating on that front. in fact the upcoming "ice cream sandwich (TBA Q4)" was said to start standardizing os' between all android users on stock roms while still allowing a jumping off platform for developers and mod communities
I'll be going iPhone5 in september.

your wrong on the suport part and the 18 month thing.
the 18month thing is excluded from the nexus line.
all nexus's will get all update's until the device cant handle it anymore.
the 18month rule is for all the other devices out there
Just came across this article that Google will be releasing not one, but up to five official Nexus devices sporting the new Jelly Bean 5.0 before the end of the year.
http://thedroidguy.com/2012/05/goog...w-android-5-0-on-five-different-nexus-devices
My question is, if I were to upgrade right now to the current Galaxy Nexus, do you think it will still be relevant enough to see a Jelly Bean update? Or will the Galaxy Nexus be old news by then? Should I wait and see what Google releases before upgrading? I just don't want to invest in a phone that will be considered outdated before the end of the year.

Nexus line usually gets at the very least one major OS update so it would be safe to say the gNex will see jellybean although it may be a little behind the newly released devices to help push their sales up prior to upgrading the older handsets

You can call me a Nexus fanboy I have owned all four Nexus phones every year, liked them all, some more than others. Right now I find the Nexus 4 a good upgrade over the Galaxy Nexus, the N4 has better battery life, a nicer screen once calibrated, and hardware wise much faster and smoother. But at the end of the day, the two phones are not night day radically different.
But some years a Nexus phone is light years ahead of the previous Nexus, I don't feel that with the Nexus 4 over the Galaxy Nexus. Just going on basics, the shape and design of the GNex and N4 are pretty much the same, from afar they look almost the same, and OS wise, not a major difference either, GNex launching with the all new 4.0 ICS, and N4 with JB 4.2, but still, both look pretty much the same with the Holo design etc..
For me the major jaw dropping difference was going from my Nexus-S to Galaxy Nexus, that felt like a major leap forward. The Nexus-S launched as 4" low res screen with Gingerbread, and the Galaxy Nexus launched with the all new ICS 4.0 with a 720p display. When I first got the Galaxy Nexus, and turned it on, I was blown away by it, the high resolution was amazing for the time, and ICS was a huge update over the Nexus-S Gingerbread, it was an amazing big difference in just one year. The two phones were night an day apart.
Again I am comparing them, at what they looked liked, and came with at launch originally. The Nexus-S compared to Galaxy Nexus was HUGE difference, the Galaxy Nexus compared to Nexus 4 not as much.
So what do you think is in store this Fall with the Nexus-Five ? A major leap forward like the N-S to GNex ? Or more of a minor update like GNex to N4 ?
Depends on who the partner is, if HTC I will probably snap the 5 up as HTC know how to make beautiful phones however the N4 is beautiful itself. But I'm assuming it will be faster, etc etc than the current N4 although this phone will last ages to be honest. However tech does move on and whatever the next Nexus is it will be better for that time period boasting newer tech.
I think could go either way. The Nexus-Five could be a major upgrade like N-S to Gnex or just minor like GNex to N4.
I am leaning towards thinking more of a major upgrade due to; Nexus-Five will have a 1080p screen, most likely 4.8" to 5", that's a big update, over the last two Nexus phones both having 4.7" 720p screens. And it will have the all new next generation Android 5,0 Key Lime Pie. Should be a big update there, being a whole new point release. And lastly rumors of the N5 having 3100mAh or so sized battery, that alone would be a huge upgrade in battery life.
Also the big question is, who will be the manufacturer of the new Nexus-Five ? Way to early to say now, but strong rumors of LG again, based off their Optimus Pro phone, but with updated internals, and a 5" screen. Or would not be surprised to see Sony get a shot at making it, and a distant third is getting HTC back into the Nexus game.

Yay, more Nexus 5 rumors and speculation. There are no hard facts that can be added to this discussion. If another Nexus released, it's going to be an upgrade from the current Nexus 4. This is a given, considering it will be another year after the Nexus 4 released that technology has had to improve, become more cost effective, etc. Aside from that, we cannot really say for sure whether Google is even planning on releasing another Nexus device (although it is extremely likely), much less what it will be like.
Release month ? All Nexus phones have been released Nov / Dec, in the Fall. But with rumors of Android 5.0 KLP being shown off at this May's Google I/O, some are saying that 5.0 might be released shortly after, in June ?
Do you think we will just get an early preview of 5.0 only, not a nearby release, with the official 5.0 release set to launch with the all new Nexus-Five in the Fall ? Or could Google surprise us, and have the Nexus-Five with 5.0 ready for an early Summer release ?

If I were to speculate, I would say a newer version of Android, which may or may not be Android 4.3 or 5.0 or w/e they decide to number it (it doesn't matter at all), would be released at I/O as they usually do. Or they may not. Once again, it doesn't matter. Google doesn't release a new phone every time a new version of Android is released.
Jan 2010 - Android 2.1 Eclair released on December 6, 2010 was first used on the Nexus One
May 2010 - Android 2.2 Froyo, no device
December 2010 - Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Nexus S
February 2011 - Android 3.0-3.2 Honeycomb, Motorola Xoom (not that it really counts, in my book)
October 2011 - Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Galaxy Nexus
July 2012 - Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Nexus 7
November 2012 - Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, Nexus 4
Going by history, a new version of Android is fairly likely, with a possible tablet (maybe an update to the Nexus 7). With three straight Nexus phones being released in Q4, a new phone is more likely towards the end of the year. However, this goes back to being entirely speculation and conjecture, and none of us are privy to Google's plans for the future. We can only look at the past, which shows that about twice a year Google releases major updates to Android, with one phone a year, in between October and January.
Will the Nexus 7 get any more OTA from Google? I read that google only updates devices for 18 month and no longer. I don't know how long ago they released nexus 7. I hope CM and others will keep bringing updates that google will no longer bring to us. it'll be a while before i can upgrade to the newer device. I'm trying to wait for the updated nexus 10 if it will ever be released.

Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 were released Nov 2012. We're nearing the 2 year End Of Official Support for Nexus devices. If a newer than 4.4.3 OS is announced at this year's I/O would it be available for official release on the 10 before November? Last year A LOT of people were VERY upset that the Galaxy Nexus wasn't getting Kit Kat 4.4.

The official life cycle for Nexus devices is actually 18 months, not 2 years. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get the next major update (4.5?) on our N10. That being said, 4.4.3 with Xposed Framework is so smooth on this thing that it wouldn't be that big of a deal for me personally. However, I'm sure even if it isn't officially supported, there will be a good AOSP ROM to flash to update if you're feeling burned. That's the beauty of owning a Nexus device. The dev support on these things is unparalleled.
Regarding the Galaxy Nexus, I believe it not receiving Kit Kat was more due to the fact that Texas Instruments had bowed out of the mobile game, so it was impossible to "officially" support. I have since then ditched Verizon and their faux Galaxy Nexus, and picked up a Nexus 5 on T-Mobile. That being said, I am currently using said GNex as a glorified WiFi media device, and it is running the latest Android version (4.4.3) by way of ShinyROM, which is a great AOSP ROM that, if you didn't know any better, was nothing more than stock. This goes back to the fact that it's a Nexus device. Anything is possible. :good:
