What's wrong with my phone? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys so recently my GS5 has been acting all messed up.
The bottom of the screen has been really un-responsive and every now and then, the phone starts freaking out, tapping a bunch of things. (for example, if the keyboard is open, it would click on every key a bunch of times near the bottom)
My phone is almost un-usable now. The only thing that could have messed it up is that once I was playing around with a suction cup on my screen, could that have messed it up?
If so, what should I do to fix it?
Thanks

Softkey on keyboard popped up

The softkey on my keyboard popped up and will not go down!!!! help!!!
Well I had to take the phone apart to get the key to go down... Talk about stressfull the phone is a week old and I had to take it apart. Well anyones everything went ok minus my screens light will go out for a second or two while im typing or when i flip the phone open the screen changes right away but the light takes a few seconds to turn on. Is there any reason why the phone would do this? I thought I might of messed up a connector but the screen will rotate it just takes a while for the light to catch up... Any ideas?
looks like a loose connector(loosing light when pulling the keyboard)
Yeah but I just checked out the other thread and it seems there are a lot of people who have this issue.

touch screen issues

Anyone else having their touch screen stop working property until they have to reboot? It's like it gets way off on where I'm actually clicking.
I have experienced that, but only after I had flashed the modaco rom. I basically returned to stock firmware this morning and am having to re-root my phone...
I have had a couple of occasions where it doesnt seem to respond correctly.
For me its like it looses the calibration, seemed to noticed it when the device is tilted horizontally.
reboot sorts it, only happened once or twice though.
If the phone is in your hand, make sure your other fingers aren't curling over the screen around the edges to much.
I noticed this happening, and backed my fingers off around the edge of the screen and it started working fine immediately.
I think the screen is just extra sensitive.
Curious if that helps.

I read somewhere (maybe on this forum even) that non-multi-touch systems have this problem. Have the same issue with my HTC Magic, but after a while you learn of a way to use the device single-handed while not touching the screen.
I dont know if this helps or not but I have no idea what you guys are talking about

The calibration problem (the screen registers a wrong spot than where you touched) comes up if you try to use a non-multi-touch phone single-handedly, so part of your palm (between the thumb and index fingers) touches the edge of the touch screen. Especially if you are trying to reach a top area of the screen while holding the phone with just that hand, likely some part of the palm touches the bottom of the screen.
If you want to try having the problem, you can touch the edge of the screen with a finger and try to click a link with another. It won't register the right spot.
Supposedly the problem should go away as soon as you lift that body part up from the screen.... so I don't know if this helps the OP or not.

does not look like its happening all the time. Ran few tests and still can't duplicate the problem in order to find the cause. so far this happened about 3-4 times on my phone.
i hope this gets resolved soon and that its not the touchscreen issue.

I've had this exact thing happen to me a few times. I notice the tip of a finger on the edge of the screen, move it, then it works fine right after. Sometimes happens with the base of my thumb hitting the bottom left corner too.
Just make sure you're not accidentally touching any of the touch area and it'll work fine.
same here

I have had this same issue on my G1 as well a N1. This problem only happens from time to time, as happes with stock ROMs and custom ROMs.
For the N1, I was initial pulling the battery; however, I have found that if I hold the power button down (don't let go) and then touch the screen to unlock or power if off.
I have a friend with the Eris who was having the same problem; Verizon released a patch earlier in the week that seems to have solved the problem for him.

You can perform a soft reset on the Nexus One by holding volume down, the trackball, and pressing the Power button on top. A half second later, your phone will reboot.
I am also having these touch screen problems, and I can confirm I am not touching any other part of the screen to have it interfere with the non-touch-screen interface. I been testing with what people has been saying on here with having any other part of the screen being pressed, so I have been testing it out and I can say its a different response then what I'm experiencing.
Here is what is going on with my nexus one:
1) it happens at random times (my device is on my table and I am pressing buttons with one finger)
2) it only affects the bottom-left portion of the screen when it happens, touching everywhere else is fine
3) it thinks I'm pressing an area around the soft keys, an example is if I press 'A' it thinks I press either the '?123' or the 'back' button, same if I press 'd' it thinks I'm pressing the 'menu' button.
I can conclude that since not all nexus one owners has this problem it is a device issue, which what is going on is probably the same as if someone was accidentally pressing a part of the screen, but it could be part of the device is assembled incorrect or deformed. The physical form of my phone is off on the right side, I can feel the gray plastic part next to the black border next to the right of the screen is a little more raised then the left side.
But there is my experience with whats going on to me and my two cents.
Ive had this a little bit on my device as well, but I think it's a software issue since it went away when I pressed the home button.
edit:
Also it has happened exclusively in Dolphin browser
here too
Sporadically, it happens with my N1 as well. When pointing at the middle of the screen (in a list for example), the input registers 2 cm below my fingertip. Rebooting fixes this temporarily but it is annoying.
A SW update could perhaps cure this behaviour?

I just had this happen for the first time, all my presses were registering way below where i was touching, tilting into landscape in an app then back to portrait fixed it for me.
So now it happened to me too. I have the Nexus One for almost two weeks and I never had the unresponsive touchscreen. Of course I noticed that the center of the softbuttons is shifted upwards and that they don't register very well in the middle where they should and I had the problem before that the sms text input box didin't registered in the center so that the keyboard wasn't popping out but that is all only a problem of adjustment. Today in the morning after my phone was on standby over night I put in the charger to charge it and I got an email with pictures. I scrolled through the email and all of a sudden the screen became totally unresponsive. I tried to scroll and the screen registered at a complete different place. All of a sudden the email was gone because the phone registered the delete button even though I never pressed it. I could close the gmail program but I had a hard time to scroll between the home screens and the live wallpaper became unresponsive too. I decided to do a restart but I had a hard time to press the shutting down button because it was unresponsive too. This all happened not after heavily usage of the phone but after maybe 1 minute usage.
I am sure that I didn't touch another part of the screen when this occured because I realized before already that the screen becomes wacky if you touch it at two different places (lack of multitouch, so stupid to disable it). I hope that this is a software issue too. I can live at the moment with the 3G problem because it doesn't stop me from using the phone. The unresponsive touchscreen scares me more because because it becomes completely unusable.
i've noticed this with low battery. Twice its happened to me, the first time was when i first recieved the handset. and secondly was this morning when my phone was off with no battery again.
anybody want to leave their battery to empty out and try test if this is correct?
I've had this happen a few times in the ten days i've had the phone. I always make sure I'm not double dipping on the screen, and its easy to do since it will exhibit this behavior for a few minutes.
In my experience battery level has no effect on it.
A reboot always fixes the issue.
I figure it's software based.

Ghost screen touches

Just got myself a transformer today and it seemed great, however right after about 5 minutes the thing goes nuts like someone is swiping or touching the screen. Mostly just one spot on the left side and it will do it whether I'm holding it or it's sitting by itself. Can't seem to find anything posted about this wondering if thats because it's not common or I'm just not looking for the right stuff? Any help would be great, will likely return it tomorrow anyhow but if there's a fix would be nice.
Yeah, I got this as well while playing Angry Birds (F'd up my scores ! ). I don't know if it will work for you, but I just cleaned the screen really well with a cotton ball and alcohol, dried it, then used a microfiber cloth to clean it up (the ones that come with glasses, screen protectors). It worked for me, i think there was some gunk on the screen and was registering as a touch..
Try a factory reset and if it doesn't work take it back for a new one.
Thanks I can't see it being something on screen but will give it a wipe done here in a minute. Also tried the factory reset seemed to help but still getting in same frequency just not as badly. will see if the cleaning doesn't work I'll take it back and replace it.
This is the biggest annoyance that I have as of recent.
I have particularly oily fingerprints which causes smudges constantly.
I love the sensitivity of the TF, but if there is excessive smudging, the residue will register as a screen input - Wish the sensitivity could be adjusted.
Weird things happen when I need to clean the screen... I.E. I will be using a browser and use a single touch to scroll down, but it will zoom in/out instead; the long press menu will show up in a random spot persistently; -or- the screen will be completely unresponsive.
When this happens - I turn of the screen, clean it, turn the screen back on, and I'm good to go (note: sometimes I cannot even see any smudges where I am having issues).
This happens to me FREQUENTLY when i use the tab outside during humid days. I am thinking a screen protector may help, but still havent gotten one to try it out.
I had this same problem before the touch screen completely stopped responding on me.
For mine it only happened after waking it up from sleep mode though. When I turned Timeout to Never the ghost touching stopped.
Well tried as suggested the cleaning of the screen and all that but it still did it so took it back to the store got lucky and they still had one left, and exchanged it. New one hasn't had any issues at all. Thanks all.
I just took mine out of the box for fun (it was packed up for rma) and when i turned it on the touch screen worked. The ghost touching stopped to. But i still have a strip from top to bottom on the right side of the screen that registers two touches . So ill probably still send it in for a replacement.

[Tips and Tricks] Transformer display appears dead

I have read several threads, both here and on other support website on the Transformer's display randomly having a tendency to fail (in some cases anyway).
Often this is through no fault of the user with lots of users being affected who's Transformers aren't rooted and have suffered no damage.
I found all these forums because one day my Transformer did this. I used it that morning and then locked it for the day with wifi on walking around my college, meaning it was likely to be on wifi all day but I wasn't using it.
When I got home I pressed the lock button and the backlight came on but nothing else? This confused me so I pressed lock again, backlight switched off, press lock again, backlight came back on but still nothing actually on the display, just a black lit up display. Hmm this is definitely weird. Held down lock button until the screen had gone blank. Pressed lock and it made that mechanical click like usual and the speakers flickered like usual. The backlight had came on but no display still.
It seems that the power to display is still connected but a ribbon cable that provides the input comes loose somewhere. After rebooting several times with no luck I got bored and started shaking it around a bit. Not violently or hitting it, more waving it around like a crazy person.
Suddenly it made a clicking noise and I saw it had restarted. Now there were loads of blue lines across my screen. The blue lines remained until what seemed like the duration of the time it took to boot. Then it went blank again. I shook it around some more and when I was ready to give up I pressed the lock button and it lit up, my background and all. Touch input is working and everything appears to be working.
I thought I would just write this in case someone is experiencing this issue and rather than sending it back (or if you have rooted so have no warranty) you might with any luck be able to fix it just by having a little dance with it!
Good Luck.

this is my second Note 4, and has the same problem, random apps openly randomly

First phone had the camera problem, so I had it replaced, but both phones open apps that are not on the screen whenever I pick up the phone or put it down. I hold the phone on its sides, I do not accidentally touch the screen, I do not touch the buttons on either side, and even if I did, the app that opens will always be an app that is not on the screen I have touched. This is obviously some weird Note 4 problem, since both phones have done it and both phones did not even have the same apps installed, it seems to involve the way I hold the phone; holding it in my hand by the sides and walking around with it will sometimes open an app also, but mostly when I either pick it up or put it down, again fingers not touching anything but the sides of the phone, and not the buttons on the sides of the phone either, the only way I can avoid this is to black the screen with the right side button before I put the phone down or in my bag, as otherwise it will open a random app. I think I have gone on long enough to describe this situation, so does anyone have any ideas??

I have note 4 long time and i didnt have any off this problems all working great . My phone is n910c exynos
Sent from my SM-N910C using XDA-Developers Legacy app
thanks for the info.
Have you check the Notification Panel to see if you have Touch Sensitivity enabled?
thanks for the reply, no, I didn't enable that on either phone.
Just wanted to share: I've had the same happen to me. On one occasion, my phone uploaded and sent pictures to one of my contact as I was was watching. I immediately suspected something nefarious. When I came across this post, I had to share.
I'd recommend that you remove the screen protector from your device if you use one, and see if that helps.
haha bruce lee roy, and to iceepyon, yes I had a glass screen protector on the first phone, but nothing on this one as I want it to break accidentally so I have to buy something new, but again both phones have the same behaviour with and without any screen protector. Really, nobody has had this problem at all with a Note 4 besides me?
