Bluetooth audio skipping - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought one two days ago when my note 4 spontaneously died, and while I'm super impressed with performance I'm finding that it utterly blows at Bluetooth audio!
It skips and stutters so much!
I did summer searching and it looks like they've been aware of it since November but I can't find any record of anyone saying it's fixed yet... Is there any indication its going to be solved soon?
Playing music from it is probably about 1/3 of its purpose, I'm not going to put up with this indefinitely.

What kind of bluetooth device are you using? I've got 5 different bluetooth devices (4 headsets and my car) and I dont have any issues with it at all (unless I'm running a CM rom, but it's been a while so maybe it's been fixed in those...)
It's just a question of curiosity really.

I think they tried to fix it in the latest build (March) but I still have some skipping on my Moto Stream. It seems less frequent and distracting than previously.
I tried the Android N preview and funnily enough didn't have any obvious skips but not sure I tried it for long enough to be sure. I think others have said they still have problems on the N Preview.

I had this problem with a different kernel (Kylo I think). Went back to ElementalX had no problem. Now with full stock and no problems. Interesting that you are having that problem on stock.

I havent had any issues with N preview on stock kernel as well as ElementalX

i haven't tried it with the car but with my brand new skullcandy "smokin buds 2 wireless" (yeah the name sucks), it seems to be resource related.
I'm i'm playing a game it skips a lot more playing the music.. I typically turn the game audio off so I can play with my music...

Ugh. It works fine with the car, and my wife's cheap Logitech headset with fine with it.
So it sounds like it's the skull candy smokin buds 2 that are the fault.

Does the new radio update have anything to do with bluetooth?

The reason I am asking is I have just horrible results listening to music through the headset!
I have tried a couple different headsets with the same results, they all skip and pause like at least 5 times a minute!
As a experiment this morning I took my wifes original instinct to the gym with me and used that for an hour and it was flawless.
So anyway I was just kinda hoping it might work!
Thanks
Roman
No it doesn't...
I noticed this too. What rom are you using
I have used a2dp bluetooth with my car stereo on Darch's rom, Flip's and Damage's. They all have had the same BT hiccuping issues. Mine is more like once every five minutes, but occasionally it freaks out.
Really I am just waiting for the official 2.1 release to come out and then I will go to an AOSP build (come on Darch!). I expect this issue will be sorted out then.
I am using Damage, but it's been off with all the roms I have used! Although it does seem worse with damage! I am thinking about trading with the wife, the bluetooth at the gym is way more important to me!
It really seems to me not a lot is known about A2DP other than it seems kinda unreliable to many, but works great for some!
I really don't know what the hell is wrong, but i am tired of researching it and trying to find a fix!

Because in the official 1.5 build a2dp worked without this issue... and an official CDMA 2.1 build has not been released yet.

Post your results. I was using the stock 1.5 build, but rooted. Now I am running Damage's 2.1 build with Flips new radio.

Well I did my nandroided back to 1.5 about an hour ago, and since then I have been running around cleaning house!
In the same room with my phone absolutely no skips, when I walk out of the room a few skips and the farther away I get the more skips I get, but not important to me as the phone will be on me when I am listening to music anyway!
Using the phone while listening to music only presented a few skips as well!
Using any Rom while doing the above would have left the music skipping at least 5 times a minute!
So all in all I guess I got it solved, although I am stuck on 1.5 as it seems, but i am stuck with the question of why does it not work so well on any Roms that I have used!
Thanks to you danknee you have made me a happy man(well as happy as a man can be cleaning house) as I have spent countless hours searching for an answer to this!
Edit:
Forgot to add that I am still rooted, but all stock!
Good to hear. Your results sound about the same as mine. I use my phone in a stationary car bracket (ProClip) that is positioned about 1.5 feet away from the A2DP BT radio (Sony with built in receiver).
With this setup my 1.5 was outstanding, but all the 2.1 builds have been very sporadic. I thought it was data connection issues with the 2.1 builds, but tried locally stored music and video with the same issues (narrowing the issue down to BT).
Just wanted to give another update:
Went to the gym today and did 20 mins on the treadmill and 30 mins on the bike and about 15 mins playing B-ball! I had one skip that was like 1 100th of a second skip, could of even been the song!
Now my question: Why do most of the Roms not work very well with A2DP?
Thanks again danknee!

from other things i have read, android has some weird issue with the way it handles bluetooth, which has clearly been resolved with 1.5 given the results that i can attest to, but possibly not as high a priority for 2.x since they haven't even really gotten it out yet and probably have more basic issues to take care of first?
just a thought...

Any solution for the music skipping?

same problem described in these other threads, haven't found a real solution yet. My music skips every time the phone loses signal or switches signal, has been happening to me specifically since i left froyo.
anyone know a fix? it's not the biggest deal but it gets really annoying after awhile, and doesn't seem like a problem we should be having.
i'm use poweramp and i'm on cm9 but it's happened to me on every rom since i upgraded from acs1.2

Are you talking about streaming or playing from your sd card? If you are streaming then nothing is going to fix that. Streaming means you are downloading the music as it is playing so if you lose signal you lose music. You would need to find some streaming music player that would cache a significant amount of music ahead so it had something to play for a few seconds if you lose signal. If it is from your sd card, it may need reformatting or get a faster sd card.
I have this problem too.. And he's right I don't remember it being an issue in froyo. I have the stock sd card and it went through a long period of never messing up so I really wouldn't think it was that.
I've had the same issue playing music from the sd card. It sounds almost like a digital hiccup.

I noticed that something changed with GB and the delay with accessing the sd card.
Sent from my PantechP4100 using xda premium
Most GB audio playback for me is smooth sailing compared to 2.2 and 2.1 Android, but it's unlistenable while using GPS navigation (like Google Nav), sometimes silenced for minutes at a time. And I have the guide voice muted. What about accessing data (on 3 or 4G) or GPS causes this crap? It seems like GB is more efficient about the phone's resources in all cases but this, and it's a really bad step backward from Eclair, let alone Froyo.
I've had this problem since 2.3 but when I switched to cm9 and started using the miui music player it stopped
I have this "issue" too. Playing music with 3g off to save battery, turn 3g on, and it "hiccups" for a few seconds. But once 3g is on it's fine. I also notice while downloading large files (or tethering) over 4g music "hiccups" and skips.
So it is sounding like since GB the radio when searching for signal sucks a tremendous amount of juice which we thought caused a lot of reboots on the GB leaks.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
have this issue also. when I'm on my breaks at work and I'm outside (presumably on cell towers) and walk into my building (which has relays for the parts of the building that have no reception) i get a skip during the handoff, or when switching for 4g back to 3g.
during these handoffs i think the processor has to spend a moment too long making sure the phone is a phone and prioritizes being a phone above all else, like being and mp3 player.
it's worst for me when im in a part of the building that has a relay and is near a window. think it switches back and forth between the towers and building relays.
just my best non knowledge based guess.
i generally just run mp3 from my sd card.
thanks for the replies guys! i'm guessing then that there isn't an acknowledged fix yet in the community .
explosivequack, so the MIUI music player doesn't have this problem? I would love to stick with poweramp especially since i paid for it, but if miui player can do pretty much the same stuff then I might give that a try if it truly doesn't skip. thanks.
@kennyglass i'm pretty sure it isn't my SD card. i switched my stock one out for one of the fast ones a year ago, plus it never happened on froyo like the others said so i doubt that's the issue anyway.
i was hoping it was a 2.3 issue but i've been on cm9 since alphas and there's no change. I can always tell exactly when my music will skip if i'm driving on a familiar route because of the 4g deadzones.
Have you tried reverting to the EC05 modem to see if that helps? It is sounding more and more like heavy battery draw while trying to regain signal causing the skips.

Extremely low microphone volume during calls

Callers at the other end have difficulty hearing me, and I've never been able to find a solution. At first, I thought it's the ROM I was using, but after flashing the stock rooted ROM, same problem. I'm using the correct baseband. I'll do a test tomorrow, returning the phone to factory condition with the latest images from Google.
Has anybody gotten this problem and was able to fix it?
Update: Back to factory condition. Issue still isn't fixed.
Newer update: Called Google Play Store via this number 1-855-836-3987. They'll be sending a replacement.

While i am not stock, I did notice this one time with my phone... like extremely LOW to the point i was pressing the phone HARD against my ear to hear.
Solution? I went ahead and flashed Paranoid Android 3.56 and flash the Louder volume MOD in the themes and apps section. That fixed my issue, I also know that not all of you will want to root, and that this SUCKS. but try to restart the phone.
Just root guys, this phone was made for that

Oh actually the issue I'm talking about is different. The ear piece volume is fine, but whenever I talk to someone on the phone, they can barely hear me unless I use speaker phone. I was actually using Paranoid Android, and I was being told I can barely be heard. So I flashed back to factory to see if it was a ROM issue. Sadly it wasn't.. On factory ROM I can still barely be heard.

I tried using headsets and the results were pretty much better..
Wish I could help. Just had to RMA mine today. Completely stock, no mic. Works when plugged in, sometimes, but for the most part no audio. When it is plugged in, the wife says I sound like I'm trapped in a bottle lol echo and static.
I had the same problem when I was running full stock. It was really annoying to hear "I can't hear you..." every other sentence.
This won't help if you do not want to root or run custom ROMs but since I switched to PA 3.56 and Matr1x kernel the people on the other end of the line haven't been complaining. I imagine for whatever reason it was fixed would apply to most custom ROMs and Kernels. I'll actually test this out this weekend and edit my post afterwards.
Edit: I made some calls to friends on PA/Matr1x/Radio .48 and everything seemed fine. I flashed full stock and called back the same people and only one person said they heard a noticeable decrease in the quality. That person also knew I was testing different settings on my phone so maybe they were messing with me.

Bumping an old thread ...
So my gf started complaining that she could barely hear me when I was using my Klipsch S4A headphones to talk--while in the car and in a quiet room. I was on CM10.1 at the time and I had read complaints from others with the same/similar issue on other ROMs, even stock/unrooted. I chalked it up to 4.2 and hoped 4.3 would fix it.
It appears that isn't the case. I just sacrificed root so I could flash a clean install of 4.3 (new bootloader and radio included) hoping it would at least mean I could have normal conversations with my gf again while the devs cook up CM10.2. How bummed am I to find out that the issue persists. I just called her from my office with my headset on and she said I "still sound far away." This is really frustrating. I never had this issue on my GNex.

I wish someone comes up with a solution for this.. I was hoping 4.3 would solve this issue also. Some say its cause of the noise reduction, isn't there anyway we could disable noise reduction?! I remembered I had that option on CM10 my i9300 but not on nexus 4 build.. This is really an issue for me since i always use headset for phone calls.. I was wondering if the original Nexus 4 headset would solve this issue.

Hi guys,
i found 2 "solutions" which didnt work for Nexus 4:
1: typing *#*#3646633#*#* into the phone to enter the engineering mode. "Should" work for all Android, does not for Nexus 4
2: the App "MobileUncle". Does only work for MTK Chipsets (Nexus 4 has another one)
my question: is there something like the Engineering mode for the Nexus 4 ?
Same issue on Nexus 5
FYI, the nexus 5 has the low input volume gain when using 3.5mm headphones with inline mics. I don't understand what LGs problem is with 3.5mm connections or why it was never tested.
started a discussion on in here
Any solution yet???
I have the exact same Issue, Android 4.4.2 and the issue is not fixed weird that only Nexus 4 has it. I am like you trying to find an app or a way to work around the issue, tried to install other ROM using rom manager and phone when SLOW as heck so no idea how to fix it yet, loud speaker to every single call is not the way to go

Phone Speaker crackling, noise, static, while screen off. (Also on call)

Easy to test, go to a very quiet room. Really quiet. Put your phone to your ear while screen off and listen. (Not phone off)
You will hear a faint sound, static, cracking well some kind of noise.
This is nothing new, and not just bound to this phone. However I had this issues only on the Nexus 4 and never noticed it on other phones I had.
It becomes a bit annoying while in call, really quiet room, and every pause, when both parties are not talking.
I think only option is learn to live with it? As if the numerous threads from N4 and other devices are true, this is a HW fault on all devices. Some ppl just do not hear it. What varies is the intensity, which ppl reported that exchanged their devices.
Is there someone on some variant not hearing it? (State your age as well)
Is there someone who exchanged their device based on this problem and got a new one with a different level of the noise?
Mine is international LG D802
I do hear the pops and squeals when I'm on a call, but not otherwise. VZW version, rooted, stock rom, "A" version of modem/radio.

The sound that you experience, since its through your BT as well, might be normal connection/call sounds. I have this really on all phones even sometimes on iPhone. But if its something tha tyou do not expect to hear, and have it constantly , bring it for repairs, I do not have somehting out of the ordinary in the calls, except what I described in the OP.
What I mean its really like static electricity, cracking sounds. But its faint, you won't notice it in normal environment, at least not when you do not know what to look for. There are youtube videos for the N4 with the sound I mean. cant listen to it now, as I am at work but I think something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOxtzStUZ4
you really need a quiet environment, put your ear to the earpiece.
Also thanks for your post!
I am on ATT and noticed this and I was thinking about returning it but I tested the display model at the ATT store and the same thing. I tested an Iphone 4s and the same thing with the earpiece. I think this is more common than people think because you really have to be in a quiet setting to actually hear it. Thanks

My ears or better brain adjusted... same way you adjust to every annoying sound after a while. It is there... but you stop caring - hearing it.
I do not believe there is a software fix. If your problem is the one that I described, new hw might help.
But as I said. I adjusted ...
Definitely seems to be hardware problem. If I knew about it earlier I would never connect headphones and charger at the same time. Symptoms: static noise @ approx. 120bpm from both speakers, while phone in deep sleep.
Tried uninstalling v4a drivers, app, poweramp, flashing different kernels, clearing caches, and what so not.
I don't want to raise hope, but I found temporary workaround. I'm on stock kk, and I use g2 tweaksbox and gravitybox to get statusbar aosp quicksetting tiles. There is a compass tile. If I leave it ON there is no more noise. At first I thought that maybe this prevents phone from deep sleeping, but bbs is showing that phone sleeps well. Have not tested standby battery impact yet.

Hi,
Thanks for the remainder, as I noticed latest @dorimanx kernel eliminates this (from v 8) and my itchy fingers installed Viper4Android again and yes I struck my luck the distortion starts again...
My conclusion is an option between have better audio performance in mid to high volume level. But, lived my days with G2 enjoying the distort...
Or uninstall everything about viper4android and listen to flat music beat...
And I choose ingore the distort and drive away with awesome audio performance in my bluetooth car audio....
Cheers,
Hey, do you have xposed? I noticed that if I enable compass in quicktiles, there will be no more crackling. But I'm not sure about battery. So I use this when it's quite, in the evening, and I start hearing cracks, I just turn on compass.

Bluetooth audio quality sounds distorted/fuzzy! [4.2.2 Stock Firmware]

Hey,
I'm having annoying problems with the bluetooth audio. The audio sounds distorted/fuzzy and is very easy to hear in certain songs
when the chorus or similar kicks in. I used the same headset with my Xperia Z and there was no audio quality problems.
I have also tested other bluetooth devices and its the same stuff going on...
Here is the funny part - when I flash CM11 and try the bluetooth-sound, the quality is perfect!
So I'm pretty damn sure its an software releated issue... I could just use CM11 ofcourse but the problem is then I miss out on other stock features I like
One song that shows this audio problem very clear is: Papa Roach - Leader Of The Broken Hearts. Spotify link here!
I've also tried to mess around some with ViPER4Android but with no good results...
Anyone has any good ideas?
Nobody has nothing to say on this matter? :victory:
I agree. Stock Bluetooth was terrible. Been using Viper for a while now... It's very good, when it's working. Even as a system app, it's being stopped and then it restarts a couple seconds later. Enable aptx in terminal and see if that helps. My head unit is old, so it did nothing for me.

Still have this strange high-ends distortions with/without ViPER, and it crashes all the time as you say.
My LG G2 original box says phone has Aptx enabled? I don't know if it matters though, my Sony Smart Wireless headset Pro (MW1) doesn't have Aptx support. However MW1 sounded great on Xperia Z and other various phones so I blame LG for fu**ing up the bluetooth drivers xD
My best bet right now is hoping for the 4.4 update to fix this problem. If not - this is a dealbreaker (change phone) to me because I listen to music via bluetooth all the time!
Crashes is a pretty song word. I'd say it's being stopped by the os. I've been having better luck with Viper audio after changing some kernel settings. Interactive Gov, read ahead buffer to 2048, and min frequency at 628. Viper had an update last week also. I've read some irs convolver settings don't like being used as system app. Been using a thx convolver with good luck lately.

my bluetooth is flawless even without any tweaks (and judging by many threads here regarding it, it seems to be a compatibility issue rather than LG "screwing something up" ) but have you tried this:
enabling AptX codec:
1. adb shell
2. su
3. setprop persist.service.btui.use_aptx 1
check that property was changed:
4. getprop persist.service.btui.use_aptx
you should get "1"
reboot the phone and check bluetooth sound quality.
to eliminate Viper being killed by the system just make it a system app and make sure you followed the installation instructions (including the build.prop tweaks if necessary).

A compability issue IS something that LG screwed up. This is the first Android phone I have with such useless bluetooth sound quality
I have tried to enable Aptx and got the result 1 but since the headset only supports A2DP it will not matter I think. I got ViPER4Android to work as well but the sound is still bad... I mean some parts sounds really good and clear but some parts where the high ends are kicking in loud the sound gets distorted
Still haven't solved this, good thing CM11 works pretty decent. It lacks some awesome stock features but the audio is nice so I can live with it
"I have a similar issue in my 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. The static is only present during loud levels on songs, not at all times during the track. Seems like it is most noticeable on the higher frequencies also. Please reply here if your issue is the same.
I did not have this problem on my HTC One X in the same car.
I have searched all over Android and Hyundai forums and found little to work with. What I have found is that this is not affecting everyone, otherwise it would be all over the forums. I appears to me that it is related to our cars bluetooth receivers and how they communicate with the phone.
I found some posts from a user CBaronne where he had what appeared to be the same issue on another phone and modified the "Bitpool" value with good results. He wanted to do the same on this phone but the variable is buried in a system file and modifying it was beyond his expertise.
I have also flashed several sound mods with no success, as well as different tricks to ensure that APT X is enabled. Nothing has helped.
I think until we get a developer with this phone and has this issue there will not be any attempt made to resolve. You can always just buy another car..."
I have been posting this comment in several threads to try an get some attention on it. This issue is not common enough for it to have consistent comments or investigation.

Reading other Android forums and Hyundai threads it DOES appear to be a compatibility issue, meaning that it is about the combination of two devices, it does not affect every G2 bluetooth connection. From the first link I posted it DOES appear that if we can adjust the bitpool values of the G2 we could improve the quality.
I have this same problem with my vw Jetta. My nexus 4 sounded amazing and now this g2 sounds like sh*t.

Okey, so I finally got so pissed off about this - that I got an HTC One, coming with 4.2.2 pre-installed.
Funny thing is this phone had more or less the same bluetooth-audio problems in 4.2.2.
However when I did the update to 4.3 on the HTC One the sound quality became perfect! I also installed 4.4.2 recently on the HTC, but sound is still great whatsoever.
So if HTC didn't fix this in 4.3 by themselves, its probably a bluetooth-fix coming with 4.3+, which means ppl just have to sit tight for official 4.4.x or use CM11 meanwhile.
Offtopic: I don't really miss the LG G2 luckily, HTC One feels more premium in hand and the UI is very fast and well designed. The loss of better hardware specs is just some words on a paper. Hell, I would say the HTC One even feels snappier!
I bought a BT 'headset' type thingy from Amazon that has APT-x on it as my current one is old and it has always sounded terrible via BT compared to wired.
The list of all APT-x BT stereo headphones is here... APT-X Headphone list. I found another list, but, it linked back to each individual page on this list, lol.
The one I chose to buy, primarily based on price, but also on user reviews was this one... BlueAnt Ribbon
I didn't want a big 'Beats' type deal, so it had to be a small model. The only ones I could find to buy in the US at a 'reasonable' price of $24 was the BlueAnt Ribbon and the HTC bluetooth stereo headphones. The HTC cost about twice as much with shipping. Mainly because the product is not (yet?) available in the US and the HTC is shipped from Taiwan after buying on Ebay.
There is a really slick silver looking dealy, but, I don't have $120 to blow on something that will likely function in the same capacity, but, looks cooler. Maybe when I spend more time making money and less time trolling XDA forums I can buy them, lol.
i know this is dragging a old thread up a bit but im having the same issues with my sony car stereo, it sounds as if bitrate is low and when you hit a high point in song its distorted crackly and hissy
has anyone found any solutions to this on 4.4.2 or is cm still the only decent fix? i like the LG features but i think all the decent ones have been ported over
any help would be amazing
