Phone Speaker crackling, noise, static, while screen off. (Also on call) - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Easy to test, go to a very quiet room. Really quiet. Put your phone to your ear while screen off and listen. (Not phone off)
You will hear a faint sound, static, cracking well some kind of noise.
This is nothing new, and not just bound to this phone. However I had this issues only on the Nexus 4 and never noticed it on other phones I had.
It becomes a bit annoying while in call, really quiet room, and every pause, when both parties are not talking.
I think only option is learn to live with it? As if the numerous threads from N4 and other devices are true, this is a HW fault on all devices. Some ppl just do not hear it. What varies is the intensity, which ppl reported that exchanged their devices.
Is there someone on some variant not hearing it? (State your age as well)
Is there someone who exchanged their device based on this problem and got a new one with a different level of the noise?
Mine is international LG D802

I do hear the pops and squeals when I'm on a call, but not otherwise. VZW version, rooted, stock rom, "A" version of modem/radio.
Here's the thread I started: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502265

The sound that you experience, since its through your BT as well, might be normal connection/call sounds. I have this really on all phones even sometimes on iPhone. But if its something tha tyou do not expect to hear, and have it constantly , bring it for repairs, I do not have somehting out of the ordinary in the calls, except what I described in the OP.
What I mean its really like static electricity, cracking sounds. But its faint, you won't notice it in normal environment, at least not when you do not know what to look for. There are youtube videos for the N4 with the sound I mean. cant listen to it now, as I am at work but I think something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOxtzStUZ4
you really need a quiet environment, put your ear to the earpiece.
Also thanks for your post!

I am on ATT and noticed this and I was thinking about returning it but I tested the display model at the ATT store and the same thing. I tested an Iphone 4s and the same thing with the earpiece. I think this is more common than people think because you really have to be in a quiet setting to actually hear it. Thanks

FWIW, I haven't had this issue at all since the update came out months ago. Maybe they just haven't updated the demo model in the store.

Thanks for the info are you saying you had the issue prior to KitKat and the OTA with KitKat resolved the problem

Nope, had the issue before VZW did their radio update. No KK update for us yet.

Im on att and wish there was some sort of software patch for this

I have the same issue (internationl LG G2)
Isn't there any fix?

All I did was accept the 12B update. 24A (Kit Kat) is rolling out now, I believe.

I'm sorry for bringing this from dead, but have you guys found any solution for this? Or it's not fixable once it occurs? charging + headphones +v4a developed this bug this evening on my g2.

My ears or better brain adjusted... same way you adjust to every annoying sound after a while. It is there... but you stop caring - hearing it.
I do not believe there is a software fix. If your problem is the one that I described, new hw might help.
But as I said. I adjusted ...

Definitely seems to be hardware problem. If I knew about it earlier I would never connect headphones and charger at the same time. Symptoms: static noise @ approx. 120bpm from both speakers, while phone in deep sleep.
Tried uninstalling v4a drivers, app, poweramp, flashing different kernels, clearing caches, and what so not.
I don't want to raise hope, but I found temporary workaround. I'm on stock kk, and I use g2 tweaksbox and gravitybox to get statusbar aosp quicksetting tiles. There is a compass tile. If I leave it ON there is no more noise. At first I thought that maybe this prevents phone from deep sleeping, but bbs is showing that phone sleeps well. Have not tested standby battery impact yet.

Hi,
Thanks for the remainder, as I noticed latest @dorimanx kernel eliminates this (from v 8) and my itchy fingers installed Viper4Android again and yes I struck my luck the distortion starts again...
My conclusion is an option between have better audio performance in mid to high volume level. But, lived my days with G2 enjoying the distort...
Or uninstall everything about viper4android and listen to flat music beat...
And I choose ingore the distort and drive away with awesome audio performance in my bluetooth car audio....
Cheers,

Hey, do you have xposed? I noticed that if I enable compass in quicktiles, there will be no more crackling. But I'm not sure about battery. So I use this when it's quite, in the evening, and I start hearing cracks, I just turn on compass.

Extremely low microphone volume during calls

Callers at the other end have difficulty hearing me, and I've never been able to find a solution. At first, I thought it's the ROM I was using, but after flashing the stock rooted ROM, same problem. I'm using the correct baseband. I'll do a test tomorrow, returning the phone to factory condition with the latest images from Google.
Has anybody gotten this problem and was able to fix it?
Update: Back to factory condition. Issue still isn't fixed.
Newer update: Called Google Play Store via this number 1-855-836-3987. They'll be sending a replacement.

While i am not stock, I did notice this one time with my phone... like extremely LOW to the point i was pressing the phone HARD against my ear to hear.
Solution? I went ahead and flashed Paranoid Android 3.56 and flash the Louder volume MOD in the themes and apps section. That fixed my issue, I also know that not all of you will want to root, and that this SUCKS. but try to restart the phone.
Just root guys, this phone was made for that

Oh actually the issue I'm talking about is different. The ear piece volume is fine, but whenever I talk to someone on the phone, they can barely hear me unless I use speaker phone. I was actually using Paranoid Android, and I was being told I can barely be heard. So I flashed back to factory to see if it was a ROM issue. Sadly it wasn't.. On factory ROM I can still barely be heard.

I tried using headsets and the results were pretty much better..
Wish I could help. Just had to RMA mine today. Completely stock, no mic. Works when plugged in, sometimes, but for the most part no audio. When it is plugged in, the wife says I sound like I'm trapped in a bottle lol echo and static.
I had the same problem when I was running full stock. It was really annoying to hear "I can't hear you..." every other sentence.
This won't help if you do not want to root or run custom ROMs but since I switched to PA 3.56 and Matr1x kernel the people on the other end of the line haven't been complaining. I imagine for whatever reason it was fixed would apply to most custom ROMs and Kernels. I'll actually test this out this weekend and edit my post afterwards.
Edit: I made some calls to friends on PA/Matr1x/Radio .48 and everything seemed fine. I flashed full stock and called back the same people and only one person said they heard a noticeable decrease in the quality. That person also knew I was testing different settings on my phone so maybe they were messing with me.

Bumping an old thread ...
So my gf started complaining that she could barely hear me when I was using my Klipsch S4A headphones to talk--while in the car and in a quiet room. I was on CM10.1 at the time and I had read complaints from others with the same/similar issue on other ROMs, even stock/unrooted. I chalked it up to 4.2 and hoped 4.3 would fix it.
It appears that isn't the case. I just sacrificed root so I could flash a clean install of 4.3 (new bootloader and radio included) hoping it would at least mean I could have normal conversations with my gf again while the devs cook up CM10.2. How bummed am I to find out that the issue persists. I just called her from my office with my headset on and she said I "still sound far away." This is really frustrating. I never had this issue on my GNex.

I wish someone comes up with a solution for this.. I was hoping 4.3 would solve this issue also. Some say its cause of the noise reduction, isn't there anyway we could disable noise reduction?! I remembered I had that option on CM10 my i9300 but not on nexus 4 build.. This is really an issue for me since i always use headset for phone calls.. I was wondering if the original Nexus 4 headset would solve this issue.

Hi guys,
i found 2 "solutions" which didnt work for Nexus 4:
1: typing *#*#3646633#*#* into the phone to enter the engineering mode. "Should" work for all Android, does not for Nexus 4
2: the App "MobileUncle". Does only work for MTK Chipsets (Nexus 4 has another one)
my question: is there something like the Engineering mode for the Nexus 4 ?
Same issue on Nexus 5
FYI, the nexus 5 has the low input volume gain when using 3.5mm headphones with inline mics. I don't understand what LGs problem is with 3.5mm connections or why it was never tested.
started a discussion on in here
Any solution yet???
I have the exact same Issue, Android 4.4.2 and the issue is not fixed weird that only Nexus 4 has it. I am like you trying to find an app or a way to work around the issue, tried to install other ROM using rom manager and phone when SLOW as heck so no idea how to fix it yet, loud speaker to every single call is not the way to go

[Q] Pop/click sound just before a normal sound if there's been no sound for a while

I'm sure this happens to most if not all Nexus 4 phone, but either it doesn't disturb the owners or most owners never notice it (or notice it but don't bother to think more of it.). I'm a sound person in general so it kind of annoys me.
This issue occurs usually when you haven't picked up your phone in a few minutes (or any amount of time more than a few minutes maybe) and you interact with it. The first time the phone tries to generate a sound (a touch or keyboard click sound maybe?) you might hear some kind of a very short pop/click noise just a little bit before you hear your normal sound. Then the rest of the sounds go on as they should, until you leave your phone aside and pick it up later again.
So, I actually wonder if anyone has bothered with that and if any talented developers have considered looking into it but abandoned hope. There's a case this could be hardware but I can't tell. Maybe someone can make a hack so that when the sound system wakes up when invoking a sound it performs some sort of fade-in first.
Anyway, I think this is an interesting issue and I'd love to hear what you think.

[Q] Noise cancellation sounds terrible

Just after getting my G2 i installed CyanogenMod 10.2 Milestone on it. I started doing some tests to see if CM could be my daily driver, and nothing really seemed to be a deal breaker, except, when i try to record videos (or I'm guessing any other sound recorder) the sound it not really that great. I went back to the stock LG software, and was hoping i only had to stay there until CM fixed the noise cancellation issue. But what do i find, the noise cancellation problem is still there.
I have been looking around here on the XDA forums, (This is my first post btw) and I came across this (what seemed like) amazing mod. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471900 But it might just be me being a droid-noob (Have only had android for 2 weeks now), but i cant figure out how to get this to work, it even bumps up the quality of pictures and videos including other cool tweaks. I have tried installing the .zip file via CWM, but that gave me nothing, also tried installing the cameraapp.apk the thread provided, but it just refused to install.
So please, if any droid-guru can help me make my microphone sound better, (both in the stock software and in CM) i would appreciate it!
Are you using some cover on the G2 ? If so, try removing it as it might cause disturbance to the reference microphone.

I do not have a cover or case, and I know the noise cancellation is software related. My phone is the D802, the one without a rear-facing microphone, maby that can have something to do with it?

I have thought about that, but I've heard a few other people have this problem as well, and im 99% sure it is software related. Though to every rule there is an exception..
Just some more info. Here is a video i recorded going home from work, and as you can hear the sounds are very "Watery" or "Distorted" as many describe it. (The bad video quality is a combination of my using CM10.2, only recording in 720P and YouTubes bitrate being bad as always)

And no, I did NOT cover up any of the microphones, im 100% sure about that.

Video uses the rear mic for audio zoom. Not even sure if it cancels as well like the top. Verizons model ONLY has a top. I have no distortion or watery sound when using stock recorder or on video. I however do get dead silence between some sounds, very good cancellation, sometimes a bit too much. Voice Privacy in dailer has NOTHING to do with voice cancellation. It is an algorithm used to encrypt voice communications and is worthless being hacked long ago. VS980

I have the d802, and that does not have rear mounted microphone. So maybe it is just some bad optimization. There has got to be a way to disable the noise cancelling microphone, or use it as a secondary mic.

Okay..
So basically every rom out there for the G2 has terrible sound when it comes to the microphone, but there is a fix, i'm sure!
A few weeks back i downloaded the AOSPA 4 rom for the G2 and installed it, and guess what, it removed the noise cancellation!
But after the rom was buggy here and there, I decided to live with the bad sound on CM 10.2.
Now a few weeks has gone by, and I wanted to try out the updated AOSPA 4 rom, but what is diz, the sound is terrible!?
So it seems like the whoever is in charge of the AOSPA rom for the G2 has brought back the horrible sound.
Now is there a way to get the microphone profiles from one rom over to another? I have the old AOSPA 4 rom, with the working sound on my computer, and I want to take the microphone profile, and save it, so that i can manually add it to any other rom i download in the future, because I know that roms like CM probably wont update the mic profile for one specific phone.
Hey there, I just got myself LG G2 D802 and I find the noise cancellation in videos to be extremely annoying. Do you guys know if there is a fix to it yet? Something to disable it would be awesome.

guys, anybody, Im bumping another thread just to get this issue alive, im going insane with bad recordings, I will throw the phone at the wall

Nexus 6 Issues thread

I thought it might be a good idea to come together and list issues we may have found.
I have to say that I love this phone.
Issues list:
1) Apps/widgets that need to access the secured/encrypted storage either crash or report that there is no sd-card, or the sd-card is unreadable.
2) The screen turn on sensor seems a little too sensitive. For instance riding in the car with the phone sitting on my leg, the screen would come on any time the road was bumpy or coming to a stop quickly.
As this will be a running list, please chip in. I am hoping we can track these as well as if fixes are released, or we decide to take them on and fix them ourselves.
I do not want any of the junk like have been in other threads about weight and size, etc. Please keep these to real issues with the phone or the software.
Well.... the app/widget issue is probably more of an issue with the app/widget itself requiring an update for better Lollipop compatibility.
As for the ambient display.... pretty sure they wanted it to be something that's convenient and easy to use. Not something that would require you to violently shake your phone to get it to turn on. I can pick it up off my desk without it turning on, then put it into my other hand, only letting it fall into my hand ever so slightly, and the ambient display turns on. Of course it's going to turn on if you're going down a bumpy road with it on your leg.

Mine worked fine. Just needs a reset.
Anyone getting strange whining feedback through 3.5mm headphone jack? I'm at work and can't try it with my Piston's but my car audio jack had crazy feedback. Same cable worked fine with my nexus 5, OPO, m8 and any other phone I've tried ?

Are you charging the phone at the same time? If so unplug the phone from the charger and see if that solves the noise.
One thing I've noticed is that when wireless charging, when it hits 100%, it completely stops charging. You'd think this would be a good thing, but with my N5, it would drop to trickle-charge mode, but would at least keep the charging indicator active. Since the N6 stops charging completely, daydreams will stop functioning, and you'll go back to the home screen. Depending on the charge cycle, the phone may come awake or stay awake most of the night. in addition to making it worthless as a bedside clock, this also makes me concerned of burn-in. This is, after all, an AMOLED screen, which is prone to burn-in issues.
I will say that every now and again, my phone will make a static noise from the top speaker even though there's nothing audio playing. It did it significantly more before I installed the update and barely does it now.

That is odd, I have had no such issue and no noise anywhere with this phone.

It did it the most during setup when it was restoring my phone, then for a while before I installed the update, and barely now. I've only been using the phone about 12 hours now and I'm pulling it off it's first charge now. It may be a total non-issue but it's something I'm keeping my eyes and ears on.

This actually sounds like a hardware defect I would send back ASAP. Thank you all for posting your issues for those of us who are on the fence this helps what we maybe walking into when purchasing this device.
I have seen the restart issue once or twice and it seems like my GPS doesn't get a complete lock on me while using maps, it did at first and after 10 min or so it would no longer zoom in on you in google maps when it locked on your signal. Not sure if this is a google maps issue or a GPS issue though.

Well, I got mine from T-Mobile so I don't think it's just as easy as getting another one. I freaking love the phone though. My biggest and only real gripe is the button placement. I hit the volume rocker almost every time I try to do anything on it. Lol.

Bad Speaker? crackling... :(

Hi all. Just got my Moto X Pure few days ago. But I noticed that my speakers are cracking at certain sounds. Specially playing the ringtone "Zeta", crackling occurs. Not clear. Does not happen with every sound. Thinking its a defective in my phone. Can you test yours playing the Zeta tone and let me know. Thanks!
I can achieve the same crackle playing that tone ONLY at max volume. I tried different audio settings (balanced or bassboost or off) all crackle at MAX volume.
Thanks. But my does not matter if its in max volume. Thanks for the reply. Moto X Pure, Returning....
PS; My Moto X2nd same ringtone, NO Problem at any volume.

I posted on the official forums about this problem and already got one reply: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/c751a88e77?commentId=981431
I chatted with Motorola support and they had me run through some TSing steps: Reboot, clear cache, factory reset
The chat support couldn't look up my IMEI for some reason, so they gave me a case number and have escalated it. I should get a call in 24-48 hours.
I'm not sure if I even want to return it if this issue is widespread. No sense in returning only to receive a phone with the same problem or perhaps MORE problems.
At Max it does have some crackling but at one step below it doesn't, and it's still better than the next best thing you can get, due to it's front facing speakers. Remember it's a phone. Spend money on a wireless speaker or headphones, this isn't supposed to be your personal boombox.

That sounds an awful lot like "you're holding it wrong". I've owned a lot of Android phones and none that I remember had it this bad or even close.
If Motorola doesn't want me using the phone that loud, they should not allow me to increase the volume that much. They may simply need to lower the gain with a software update. Until I know for sure that pretty much everyone has this problem, I'm going through Moto's support channels for a resolution.
Looking at the mixers_path.XML file, the gains do seem to be rather high.

I have not tinkered with that file or the settings within before. A quick Google seems to suggest that screwing with those settings can cause similar distortion. Sounds more and more like something they'll have to tweak in an OTA.

It may be the eq settings. Do you have it enabled?

I have had it enabled as it comes enabled by default. While troubleshooting this problem I discovered this feature and disabled the EQ in the sound settings menu. It mitigates the crackling but doesn't make it go away entirely.
Sorry if it's happening ALL the time even at low volumes but just about any speaker system cranked up to full volume will snap-crackle-pop unless you are running very expensive speakers with very powerful, clean amplification! I mean come on...can we even call what they put in a cell phone a "speaker"?? Maybe if you were the size of a grasshopper you could call them "speakers"!

None of my other phones do it. This isn't a budget phone either. Hell my Moto G doesn't do it.
So is this happening on ALL these new phones...(don't have mine yet...it's being shipped right now) or is this just happening to a random few?

YUK...I hope it doesn't bother me! While this is not my first Moto phone it is my first unlocked "almost" vanilla Android phone. I really want this thing to be GREAT!
---------- Post added at 12:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:28 PM ----------
If this issue is so wide spread WHY DIDN"T EVEN ONE REVIEW say anything about it???? Did they all get different phones? Is this a batch issue like we have seen on many threads about many phones like the S6 scratch debacle?

Probably because it's easy to miss. It only seems to happen at max or near max volume and with only certain sounds. It might also only be 10% of the phones or something have it. It would be very easy to have one of the 10% and not notice unless you're looking for it.
It's not a huge deal at all... don't get me wrong. I'm particular about my phones though, so it is enough for me to consider looking elsewhere.
I tried to capture it on video, but it doesn't pick up well. It is worse in person. https://vid.me/tavk
Well I couldn't hear anything bad through my laptop with headphones on so I hope it is tolerable. TY
Well for me, I have to bring the volume down 4 notches so theres no rattle. Another thing I noticed is that when choosing a notification sound, between each choice, theres crackle and pop coming from my speaker. Weird. Also, rattle is from top speaker only. Seems like for ringtones, the phone uses both speakers, but only through the bottom for notifications. When playing music, even at maxx volume, i don't notice the rattle. Well, as much as I love this phone, i think I'm returning it. Since its a widespread problem, maybe the next revision, they "will" install different speaker. Guess the wait for N5x begins for me.
