[Q] Noise cancellation sounds terrible - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just after getting my G2 i installed CyanogenMod 10.2 Milestone on it. I started doing some tests to see if CM could be my daily driver, and nothing really seemed to be a deal breaker, except, when i try to record videos (or I'm guessing any other sound recorder) the sound it not really that great. I went back to the stock LG software, and was hoping i only had to stay there until CM fixed the noise cancellation issue. But what do i find, the noise cancellation problem is still there.
I have been looking around here on the XDA forums, (This is my first post btw) and I came across this (what seemed like) amazing mod. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471900 But it might just be me being a droid-noob (Have only had android for 2 weeks now), but i cant figure out how to get this to work, it even bumps up the quality of pictures and videos including other cool tweaks. I have tried installing the .zip file via CWM, but that gave me nothing, also tried installing the cameraapp.apk the thread provided, but it just refused to install.
So please, if any droid-guru can help me make my microphone sound better, (both in the stock software and in CM) i would appreciate it!

Are you using some cover on the G2 ? If so, try removing it as it might cause disturbance to the reference microphone.

I do not have a cover or case, and I know the noise cancellation is software related. My phone is the D802, the one without a rear-facing microphone, maby that can have something to do with it?

I have the same problem witm my lg g2.After I record a video or use voice recorder the sound freezing and the quality is very poor.I thought that I have only my this problem...My phone is not rooted and I have it from yesterday morning.Today I sow this problem.I made a factory reset and the problem is not solved. Is something that I can do with this issue?

so title should be cm10.2 Noise cancellation, lol

This is happening on stock, CM and PAC-man roms, so its not just a CM issue.

my bad, you can disable it from dialer however, it might be good reason to return your unit

I have thought about that, but I've heard a few other people have this problem as well, and im 99% sure it is software related. Though to every rule there is an exception..

Just some more info. Here is a video i recorded going home from work, and as you can hear the sounds are very "Watery" or "Distorted" as many describe it. (The bad video quality is a combination of my using CM10.2, only recording in 720P and YouTubes bitrate being bad as always)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgdtWzoQkOU&feature=youtu.be
And no, I did NOT cover up any of the microphones, im 100% sure about that.

yep, that's just this phones awful audio recording here. it's god awful. my htc rezound did the same thing, yet all the following phones i had (s3, DNA, gnex, S4) didn't do this. so it's like a 3 year old problme that LG just can't manage to fix. sigh.

Video uses the rear mic for audio zoom. Not even sure if it cancels as well like the top. Verizons model ONLY has a top. I have no distortion or watery sound when using stock recorder or on video. I however do get dead silence between some sounds, very good cancellation, sometimes a bit too much. Voice Privacy in dailer has NOTHING to do with voice cancellation. It is an algorithm used to encrypt voice communications and is worthless being hacked long ago. VS980

I have the d802, and that does not have rear mounted microphone. So maybe it is just some bad optimization. There has got to be a way to disable the noise cancelling microphone, or use it as a secondary mic.

Okay..
So basically every rom out there for the G2 has terrible sound when it comes to the microphone, but there is a fix, i'm sure!
A few weeks back i downloaded the AOSPA 4 rom for the G2 and installed it, and guess what, it removed the noise cancellation!
But after the rom was buggy here and there, I decided to live with the bad sound on CM 10.2.
Now a few weeks has gone by, and I wanted to try out the updated AOSPA 4 rom, but what is diz, the sound is terrible!?
So it seems like the whoever is in charge of the AOSPA rom for the G2 has brought back the horrible sound.
Now is there a way to get the microphone profiles from one rom over to another? I have the old AOSPA 4 rom, with the working sound on my computer, and I want to take the microphone profile, and save it, so that i can manually add it to any other rom i download in the future, because I know that roms like CM probably wont update the mic profile for one specific phone.

Hey there, I just got myself LG G2 D802 and I find the noise cancellation in videos to be extremely annoying. Do you guys know if there is a fix to it yet? Something to disable it would be awesome.

bump

Might be a HW fault or y'all are being too sensitive videos recorded with my D802 have great sound.

Could it be really a hardware issue? Should I return the phone?

Bumping this in hopes there's been some progress on this subject? I returned two Lg G2's due rto this issue, so its definitely an issue with the phone. Thanks

Constant noise on top speaker

Got my Nexus 4 today.
Half an hour ago I realized some constant noise coming out of the top speaker, all the time.
It's very quiet but it's definitely there. Sometimes it sounds like if you have your phone near a radio or anything else with speakers.
Anyone else got the same problem? Might this drain battery?
No issue like that here.
Edit: After further investigation in a quieter place. I do hear a slight sound. As if the top speaker is on.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I just checked. It is really barely noticeable, but it is there!
Let's try to narrow this down...
If you have the issue, write down if it's dependent upon anything.
Does disabling "touch sounds" fix it?
How about disabling noise cancellation?
If you blast some quick bursts of compressed air at it, does it fix it?
If you mute all the volumes, does it help/fix it?
Could you freeze the audio controller app (don't recall the name atm) in system/app?
I got mine today and don't have that issue

I hope someone with the time and dedication will create a thread with a checklist of all the problems, so new owners can check if they have any of those problem and decide whether or not to return the unit.
Also have it here, I'll be surprised if this isn't a common issue.

^^ This. I just checked my Sony Xperia ion and it seems to be going "click..click..click..click..click..." over and over, with nothing going on. I bet a huge number of phones have this normally. How many of the "issues" we're seeing are actually just normal phone things, and people are just being overly picky just because it's THIS phone?
No issue here, at least not a constant buzzing.

This has a high chance to come from the last kernel version ! Anyone using linux may have noticed this from the last kernel update of the sound driver , i think somehow related to the powersaving . It's surely annoying but not a big deal, more software related than a hardware defect.

That noise is the combined anguished screams of those who couldn't get through on order day or who got back ordered.
Google records them on all android fans and then plays them back over the Nexus 4 at low volume.
Andy Rubin says it makes him smile and helps him sleep.

Just checked my old phone(galaxy s3) with 4 different ears, and no such noise was heard.

Phone Speaker crackling, noise, static, while screen off. (Also on call)

Easy to test, go to a very quiet room. Really quiet. Put your phone to your ear while screen off and listen. (Not phone off)
You will hear a faint sound, static, cracking well some kind of noise.
This is nothing new, and not just bound to this phone. However I had this issues only on the Nexus 4 and never noticed it on other phones I had.
It becomes a bit annoying while in call, really quiet room, and every pause, when both parties are not talking.
I think only option is learn to live with it? As if the numerous threads from N4 and other devices are true, this is a HW fault on all devices. Some ppl just do not hear it. What varies is the intensity, which ppl reported that exchanged their devices.
Is there someone on some variant not hearing it? (State your age as well)
Is there someone who exchanged their device based on this problem and got a new one with a different level of the noise?
Mine is international LG D802
I do hear the pops and squeals when I'm on a call, but not otherwise. VZW version, rooted, stock rom, "A" version of modem/radio.

The sound that you experience, since its through your BT as well, might be normal connection/call sounds. I have this really on all phones even sometimes on iPhone. But if its something tha tyou do not expect to hear, and have it constantly , bring it for repairs, I do not have somehting out of the ordinary in the calls, except what I described in the OP.
What I mean its really like static electricity, cracking sounds. But its faint, you won't notice it in normal environment, at least not when you do not know what to look for. There are youtube videos for the N4 with the sound I mean. cant listen to it now, as I am at work but I think something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOxtzStUZ4
you really need a quiet environment, put your ear to the earpiece.
Also thanks for your post!
I am on ATT and noticed this and I was thinking about returning it but I tested the display model at the ATT store and the same thing. I tested an Iphone 4s and the same thing with the earpiece. I think this is more common than people think because you really have to be in a quiet setting to actually hear it. Thanks

My ears or better brain adjusted... same way you adjust to every annoying sound after a while. It is there... but you stop caring - hearing it.
I do not believe there is a software fix. If your problem is the one that I described, new hw might help.
But as I said. I adjusted ...
Definitely seems to be hardware problem. If I knew about it earlier I would never connect headphones and charger at the same time. Symptoms: static noise @ approx. 120bpm from both speakers, while phone in deep sleep.
Tried uninstalling v4a drivers, app, poweramp, flashing different kernels, clearing caches, and what so not.
I don't want to raise hope, but I found temporary workaround. I'm on stock kk, and I use g2 tweaksbox and gravitybox to get statusbar aosp quicksetting tiles. There is a compass tile. If I leave it ON there is no more noise. At first I thought that maybe this prevents phone from deep sleeping, but bbs is showing that phone sleeps well. Have not tested standby battery impact yet.

Hi,
Thanks for the remainder, as I noticed latest @dorimanx kernel eliminates this (from v 8) and my itchy fingers installed Viper4Android again and yes I struck my luck the distortion starts again...
My conclusion is an option between have better audio performance in mid to high volume level. But, lived my days with G2 enjoying the distort...
Or uninstall everything about viper4android and listen to flat music beat...
And I choose ingore the distort and drive away with awesome audio performance in my bluetooth car audio....
Cheers,
Hey, do you have xposed? I noticed that if I enable compass in quicktiles, there will be no more crackling. But I'm not sure about battery. So I use this when it's quite, in the evening, and I start hearing cracks, I just turn on compass.

[Q] Microphone Issues Like Nexus 5/Not working

Issue: LG G2 Microphone sounding muffled and like I'm meters away from it just like the recent issues on the Nexus 5.
Solutions: Speaker phone, headset w/mic and Bluetooth headset.
Tried but unsuccessful solutions: Change build.prop string for noise cancellation microphone to false. Gone to 4.2.2, 4.4.1, 4.4.2. Take Q-Tip and cleaned 3.5mm jack to see if dust or anything else was stuck. Left off for extended periods of time. Let sit in rice just in case of any moisture or condensation shorting mic.
Summary: Mic is muffled and have tried software solutions. I think it has to do with the noise cancellation mic having some kind of short or error. Speaker phone works like a charm but I don't want everyone hearing my conversations. I'm continually trying for a solution. Right now I'm going to be returning to full stock and seeing if that can help at all. I'd rather have a working phone than root honestly.... I've searched for days for solutions here and in the Nexus 5 forum because I understand that the LG G2 and Nexus 5 are a lot alike.
TLDR: Mic won't work and is muffled. Tried a lot of software fixes for G2 and Nexus 5. Any ideas guys?
Edit: Returned to stock updated to latest, love the new network logo too. Still now fix.
Wasn't the problem on nexus because there was some plastic stuck in the way?

I have the same issue and it's driving me crazy. I'm on Tmobile and have the D801 variant. I notice it's random like sometimes it will work fine and the other user can hear me loud. Other times they can barely hear me and I sound really quiet or far away and muffled. I am also told that there is some slight static sound when I'm talking as well.
Similarly I found out when on speakerphone everything becomes loud and clear to them. I'd love to find out what the cause of this is. Is this hardware or software related? Is this on all G2s or just the Tmobile version? Is my phone defective?
I'm on Sprint LS980. I've tried messing with audio settings but no success. I was thinking what if there was a way to make the phone think your on speaker but use the handset speaker instead of the actual speakers. I will keep trying and see if there isn't something. This is driving me mad.

Haha nicely done. How did you go ahead and open up the phone??
Well if there is no damage, then is it safe to say that this is a software issue? Does this happen to you all the time, or occasionally like mine?
Mine is constant. I removed the sim card slot (phone off of course) by poking the hole with one of my girlfriends earrings. Trust me this gets ghettoer. Then I used my phone charger adapter and stuck it ever so slightly in the open hole just enough to where I was only touching the case and not the hardware and turned it clockwise and then took my capital one credit card and put it in the now opened slit. Then followed along the outer side of my phone. The corners are tight don't be a hero and pull it off. Go all the way around with whatever you wanna use. There is a specific tool for it but I'm impatient.
Edit: Changed String
persist.audio.spkcall_2mic=OFF
To On didn't help
Edit: Changed String
persist.audio.aanc.enable=false
To true didn't help
Any ideas? I'm pulling my hair out.

Thanks for the reply man. I've done multiple recordings and have no idea what the heck is going on. I've gone to every ROM avaliable to see if there were any ones that worked but none did so I have no clue. I'm probably just gonna diagnose it as hardware.

So you're saying it was your case/cover that might have been the problem? You tried taking it off and making calls?
Hard for me to diagnose the problem on my end because like I said it's on an off for me. So not sure if any changes I make work, until it happens again. I'm going to try recording myself next time it happens as well.

What most of the times happen to me is that the other caller hears me like if I was holding the phone far from my mouth, and other times they hear themselves like echo.
I can't reproduce the problem. It's totally random apparently. Maybe RAM memory related?

Maybe but not likely.
I doubt its software for me at first that seemed like the problem but I've COMPLETELY gone back to stock several times and there is still the issue. I'm going to take off my back tomorrow and do a thorough cleaning.
Edit
Sprint recently released their new network Spark to the LS980. And so I decided to go ahead and upgrade and up on doing so I found a custom ROM

No in order to have the latest update and still be able to use a custom recovery there's quite a tricky process you have to downgrade the aboot in order to be able to have a custom recovery. Doing this solved my microphone issue. I do not know why but I'm not complaining.
Glad to hear that solved your issue! Maybe it was a network issue all along? I think I figured out my issue to.
Embarrassed to say, but turns out it was more a user error. I realized when I had issues it was when I was lounging around. Turns out depending on what I was doing and how I was holding the phone it would kind of cover the secondary mic on the top of the phone which was causing the issue. Can't say I've had this issue on previous phones, but seems to affect this one.

I just noticed that on mine, but only on normal calls...I have sent mine back to LG regarding another issue so I will raise this one too. Im talking about the earpiece speaker though, not the external speaker.

Ok I'll try
I'm not entirely sure if this will fix the specific issue you are having, but omgosh doing this, makes a big time difference in the speaker sound quality of the phone. I made a video explaining how to do this and it's easy. Give it a try.... My phone sounds sooo much better at high volumes

While it didn't fix my crackle with Snapchat (seems to be app related other recording apps don't do it), it certainly improved sound noticeably so thanks for this suggestion.
I reckon there is about a 30% improvement in sound from the speaker, sounds much less muffled and louder. Very easy tweak I would suggest others do, that dust protector probably doesn't provide that much of protection in fact if dust did settle in those little holes I would imagine it would make the sound even worse.

Absolutely! It makes a HUGE difference. Everyone should do this. Glad you heard the difference, at least, in that regard.

No sound while recording video

Hi there, I'm having trouble with my Nexus 6P. When I record a video using the Google camera, Snapchat or Instagram there is no sound in the video. Well, there is but it's like a Shhh sound, like a damaged mic. The thing is, that this only happens while recording video, the mic works fine during phonecalls, recording WhatsApp voice notes or using voice command in the Google App. I don't know if this is a hardware or software issue. I think the mic that is right below the camera may be damaged (recently my phone got dirty with Engine Oil, I cleaned it right away but I don't know), but since I recently also updated to the latest beta 7.1.2 it may be a software problem too. I hope you can help me out here, not being able to record videos properly is killing me. Thanks in advance.
I think it is a software issue. I have the same problem and I just updated to 7.1.2 as well.
OMG I'm not the only one! I hope it's software then... Have you tried to fix it or you're planning on just waiting for an update?

Well! It looks like I'm waiting. I just tried to flash back to the official update and the recovery mode said "Cannot flash back to older build." Looks like we are pretty much stuck with a phone that cannot make phone calls unless we completely wipe all data.

Wait but, I don't have any issues with phonecalls, recording voice messages or Google voice commands... The problem is only when trying to record video with any app (no audio on recorded videos)!

Oh really? Mine is jacked up across the board. I don't have audio in videos or calls. I should've noticed you only mentioned videos. That's interesting.
Same issue
Hey I'm actually in the same boat as the original poster. Ever since the 7.1.2 beta I have no sound to my videos. If I hold the speaker to my ear I can hear the "ssshhhh" noises though. Everything else seems to work fine. Ex. Calls. Google. Voice recording. From reading online I was really scared my mic below my camera blew or was damaged but I'm really hoping it's just a software issue. If anyone has found a workaround or solution to this problem I would love to hear it.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work. And the problem extends to all video recording apps such as Snapchat and Instagram... I have just updated to the final Android O version released today but the problem persists.

Have you ever opened up the back cover? I have the same issue and the problem in my case is that I never tried to record video on the phone until after I've replaced the back cover so I don't know if it had something to do with my repairs. I plan on opening up the back soon to replace the battery and will wiggle the wires around when it is open. I think this is a hardware issue as I've tried every software fix. Might be just a bad batch of phones because we've come to realize the QC might not have been the best as seen with the early shutdown and bootloop issues.

I haven't yet, but please let me know how it turns out for you. I have tried to find the mic online to try to replace it but I think is soldered to the board...

Today I went to a repair shop and they told me that the second mic was in good condition.. That it must be software related... I am going to root and wipe the system entirely to see if the problem goes away.. Will update as I finish.

I have same issue now on 8.0. worked good on noughat but now it sucks. That said, using cinema fv and selecting external mic works. Just sucks having a different app

That's for suggesting Cinema FV, I changed the audio source to external and was able to record video with sound. But agreed that it sucks to have to purchase an app to make it work.

Did starting fresh fix it for you? I switched out my battery and inspected everything while I had the case opened and also couldn't find any sign of issues with the mics. So as you suggested, it is most likely software related.

Repair shop
This happened to my 6p about 6 months after I bought it. I took it to the Huawei official repair shop in Singapore and they said it was water damage (I have had no incidents with water). Even better, they said it was not under warranty because of the water damage and that it would cost US$700 (more than the phone brand new ) to replace the screen and motherboard. I am suspicious that they had no idea what the issue was and were going to try and replace everything in hopes that it would fix it. I mean why else replace the screen when the audio isn't being recorded in the camera app only?
Hardware issue
If there is no audio in video, its probably because the audio mic for video recording just below the camera bump is damaged. The device has seperate mic for video. And a mic integrated with the lower speaker is for phone calls and ok google hotword.
