Got my Nexus 4 today.
Half an hour ago I realized some constant noise coming out of the top speaker, all the time.
It's very quiet but it's definitely there. Sometimes it sounds like if you have your phone near a radio or anything else with speakers.
Anyone else got the same problem? Might this drain battery?
No issue like that here.
Edit: After further investigation in a quieter place. I do hear a slight sound. As if the top speaker is on.

I just checked. It is really barely noticeable, but it is there!
Let's try to narrow this down...
If you have the issue, write down if it's dependent upon anything.
Does disabling "touch sounds" fix it?
How about disabling noise cancellation?
If you blast some quick bursts of compressed air at it, does it fix it?
If you mute all the volumes, does it help/fix it?
Could you freeze the audio controller app (don't recall the name atm) in system/app?
I got mine today and don't have that issue

I hope someone with the time and dedication will create a thread with a checklist of all the problems, so new owners can check if they have any of those problem and decide whether or not to return the unit.
Also have it here, I'll be surprised if this isn't a common issue.

^^ This. I just checked my Sony Xperia ion and it seems to be going "click..click..click..click..click..." over and over, with nothing going on. I bet a huge number of phones have this normally. How many of the "issues" we're seeing are actually just normal phone things, and people are just being overly picky just because it's THIS phone?
No issue here, at least not a constant buzzing.

This has a high chance to come from the last kernel version ! Anyone using linux may have noticed this from the last kernel update of the sound driver , i think somehow related to the powersaving . It's surely annoying but not a big deal, more software related than a hardware defect.

That noise is the combined anguished screams of those who couldn't get through on order day or who got back ordered.
Google records them on all android fans and then plays them back over the Nexus 4 at low volume.
Andy Rubin says it makes him smile and helps him sleep.
My Xperia mini pro makes noise too. This is normal. Peace

Its normal. A feature, not a bug.
I like it. Means I can grab the phone before it gets loud.... think of it as a pre-ring.
Yep, mine does it too. I like it so I don't get a full volume blast right away when the phone rings, making crap my pants.

That's exactly what it is for. Just in case you have your phone to your ear already it isn't blaring. it's like a warning feature.
It's one of my favorite features on this phone. I really really like it.

its how samsung made it.. all of these phones are like that first 2 seconds are very low then out of no where its loud... it doesnt even seem gradually thats why it sounds weird.... but its made like that! so dont worry about it
I think all samsung mobiles have this feature !
I had 4 Samsung mobiles and all of them had that feature !
I don't know why Samsung done this but I think there is a secret about it !
Oh ok awesome, thanks for clearing that up. This is my first Samsung, I've had mainly HTC's so I wasn't sure if my phone had a bug that I need to fix or something.
The volume it came originally like that cuz I went on YouTube & watch videos on the volume & it's originally like that. It doesn't bother me. I just needed to know why.
Callers at the other end have difficulty hearing me, and I've never been able to find a solution. At first, I thought it's the ROM I was using, but after flashing the stock rooted ROM, same problem. I'm using the correct baseband. I'll do a test tomorrow, returning the phone to factory condition with the latest images from Google.
Has anybody gotten this problem and was able to fix it?
Update: Back to factory condition. Issue still isn't fixed.
Newer update: Called Google Play Store via this number 1-855-836-3987. They'll be sending a replacement.

While i am not stock, I did notice this one time with my phone... like extremely LOW to the point i was pressing the phone HARD against my ear to hear.
Solution? I went ahead and flashed Paranoid Android 3.56 and flash the Louder volume MOD in the themes and apps section. That fixed my issue, I also know that not all of you will want to root, and that this SUCKS. but try to restart the phone.
Just root guys, this phone was made for that

Oh actually the issue I'm talking about is different. The ear piece volume is fine, but whenever I talk to someone on the phone, they can barely hear me unless I use speaker phone. I was actually using Paranoid Android, and I was being told I can barely be heard. So I flashed back to factory to see if it was a ROM issue. Sadly it wasn't.. On factory ROM I can still barely be heard.

I tried using headsets and the results were pretty much better..
Wish I could help. Just had to RMA mine today. Completely stock, no mic. Works when plugged in, sometimes, but for the most part no audio. When it is plugged in, the wife says I sound like I'm trapped in a bottle lol echo and static.
I had the same problem when I was running full stock. It was really annoying to hear "I can't hear you..." every other sentence.
This won't help if you do not want to root or run custom ROMs but since I switched to PA 3.56 and Matr1x kernel the people on the other end of the line haven't been complaining. I imagine for whatever reason it was fixed would apply to most custom ROMs and Kernels. I'll actually test this out this weekend and edit my post afterwards.
Edit: I made some calls to friends on PA/Matr1x/Radio .48 and everything seemed fine. I flashed full stock and called back the same people and only one person said they heard a noticeable decrease in the quality. That person also knew I was testing different settings on my phone so maybe they were messing with me.

Bumping an old thread ...
So my gf started complaining that she could barely hear me when I was using my Klipsch S4A headphones to talk--while in the car and in a quiet room. I was on CM10.1 at the time and I had read complaints from others with the same/similar issue on other ROMs, even stock/unrooted. I chalked it up to 4.2 and hoped 4.3 would fix it.
It appears that isn't the case. I just sacrificed root so I could flash a clean install of 4.3 (new bootloader and radio included) hoping it would at least mean I could have normal conversations with my gf again while the devs cook up CM10.2. How bummed am I to find out that the issue persists. I just called her from my office with my headset on and she said I "still sound far away." This is really frustrating. I never had this issue on my GNex.

I wish someone comes up with a solution for this.. I was hoping 4.3 would solve this issue also. Some say its cause of the noise reduction, isn't there anyway we could disable noise reduction?! I remembered I had that option on CM10 my i9300 but not on nexus 4 build.. This is really an issue for me since i always use headset for phone calls.. I was wondering if the original Nexus 4 headset would solve this issue.

Hi guys,
i found 2 "solutions" which didnt work for Nexus 4:
1: typing *#*#3646633#*#* into the phone to enter the engineering mode. "Should" work for all Android, does not for Nexus 4
2: the App "MobileUncle". Does only work for MTK Chipsets (Nexus 4 has another one)
my question: is there something like the Engineering mode for the Nexus 4 ?
Same issue on Nexus 5
FYI, the nexus 5 has the low input volume gain when using 3.5mm headphones with inline mics. I don't understand what LGs problem is with 3.5mm connections or why it was never tested.
started a discussion on in here
Any solution yet???
I have the exact same Issue, Android 4.4.2 and the issue is not fixed weird that only Nexus 4 has it. I am like you trying to find an app or a way to work around the issue, tried to install other ROM using rom manager and phone when SLOW as heck so no idea how to fix it yet, loud speaker to every single call is not the way to go

Easy to test, go to a very quiet room. Really quiet. Put your phone to your ear while screen off and listen. (Not phone off)
You will hear a faint sound, static, cracking well some kind of noise.
This is nothing new, and not just bound to this phone. However I had this issues only on the Nexus 4 and never noticed it on other phones I had.
It becomes a bit annoying while in call, really quiet room, and every pause, when both parties are not talking.
I think only option is learn to live with it? As if the numerous threads from N4 and other devices are true, this is a HW fault on all devices. Some ppl just do not hear it. What varies is the intensity, which ppl reported that exchanged their devices.
Is there someone on some variant not hearing it? (State your age as well)
Is there someone who exchanged their device based on this problem and got a new one with a different level of the noise?
Mine is international LG D802
I do hear the pops and squeals when I'm on a call, but not otherwise. VZW version, rooted, stock rom, "A" version of modem/radio.

The sound that you experience, since its through your BT as well, might be normal connection/call sounds. I have this really on all phones even sometimes on iPhone. But if its something tha tyou do not expect to hear, and have it constantly , bring it for repairs, I do not have somehting out of the ordinary in the calls, except what I described in the OP.
What I mean its really like static electricity, cracking sounds. But its faint, you won't notice it in normal environment, at least not when you do not know what to look for. There are youtube videos for the N4 with the sound I mean. cant listen to it now, as I am at work but I think something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOxtzStUZ4
you really need a quiet environment, put your ear to the earpiece.
Also thanks for your post!
I am on ATT and noticed this and I was thinking about returning it but I tested the display model at the ATT store and the same thing. I tested an Iphone 4s and the same thing with the earpiece. I think this is more common than people think because you really have to be in a quiet setting to actually hear it. Thanks

My ears or better brain adjusted... same way you adjust to every annoying sound after a while. It is there... but you stop caring - hearing it.
I do not believe there is a software fix. If your problem is the one that I described, new hw might help.
But as I said. I adjusted ...
Definitely seems to be hardware problem. If I knew about it earlier I would never connect headphones and charger at the same time. Symptoms: static noise @ approx. 120bpm from both speakers, while phone in deep sleep.
Tried uninstalling v4a drivers, app, poweramp, flashing different kernels, clearing caches, and what so not.
I don't want to raise hope, but I found temporary workaround. I'm on stock kk, and I use g2 tweaksbox and gravitybox to get statusbar aosp quicksetting tiles. There is a compass tile. If I leave it ON there is no more noise. At first I thought that maybe this prevents phone from deep sleeping, but bbs is showing that phone sleeps well. Have not tested standby battery impact yet.

Hi,
Thanks for the remainder, as I noticed latest @dorimanx kernel eliminates this (from v 8) and my itchy fingers installed Viper4Android again and yes I struck my luck the distortion starts again...
My conclusion is an option between have better audio performance in mid to high volume level. But, lived my days with G2 enjoying the distort...
Or uninstall everything about viper4android and listen to flat music beat...
And I choose ingore the distort and drive away with awesome audio performance in my bluetooth car audio....
Cheers,
Hey, do you have xposed? I noticed that if I enable compass in quicktiles, there will be no more crackling. But I'm not sure about battery. So I use this when it's quite, in the evening, and I start hearing cracks, I just turn on compass.
Issue: LG G2 Microphone sounding muffled and like I'm meters away from it just like the recent issues on the Nexus 5.
Solutions: Speaker phone, headset w/mic and Bluetooth headset.
Tried but unsuccessful solutions: Change build.prop string for noise cancellation microphone to false. Gone to 4.2.2, 4.4.1, 4.4.2. Take Q-Tip and cleaned 3.5mm jack to see if dust or anything else was stuck. Left off for extended periods of time. Let sit in rice just in case of any moisture or condensation shorting mic.
Summary: Mic is muffled and have tried software solutions. I think it has to do with the noise cancellation mic having some kind of short or error. Speaker phone works like a charm but I don't want everyone hearing my conversations. I'm continually trying for a solution. Right now I'm going to be returning to full stock and seeing if that can help at all. I'd rather have a working phone than root honestly.... I've searched for days for solutions here and in the Nexus 5 forum because I understand that the LG G2 and Nexus 5 are a lot alike.
TLDR: Mic won't work and is muffled. Tried a lot of software fixes for G2 and Nexus 5. Any ideas guys?
Edit: Returned to stock updated to latest, love the new network logo too. Still now fix.
Wasn't the problem on nexus because there was some plastic stuck in the way?

I have the same issue and it's driving me crazy. I'm on Tmobile and have the D801 variant. I notice it's random like sometimes it will work fine and the other user can hear me loud. Other times they can barely hear me and I sound really quiet or far away and muffled. I am also told that there is some slight static sound when I'm talking as well.
Similarly I found out when on speakerphone everything becomes loud and clear to them. I'd love to find out what the cause of this is. Is this hardware or software related? Is this on all G2s or just the Tmobile version? Is my phone defective?
I'm on Sprint LS980. I've tried messing with audio settings but no success. I was thinking what if there was a way to make the phone think your on speaker but use the handset speaker instead of the actual speakers. I will keep trying and see if there isn't something. This is driving me mad.

EDIT: Well that didn't change anything I modified the value between 0-2 and that didn't change a darn thing. If I can't get a solution soon I'm opening this bad boy up.
EDIT: I opened up my phone and disconnected some of the basic paneling on the bottom a d looked for any sort of damage but found none. I tried blowing and removing any dust or anything in that way but still no success.
BTW this phone is just as pretty on the inside as it is the outside.

Haha nicely done. How did you go ahead and open up the phone??
Well if there is no damage, then is it safe to say that this is a software issue? Does this happen to you all the time, or occasionally like mine?
Mine is constant. I removed the sim card slot (phone off of course) by poking the hole with one of my girlfriends earrings. Trust me this gets ghettoer. Then I used my phone charger adapter and stuck it ever so slightly in the open hole just enough to where I was only touching the case and not the hardware and turned it clockwise and then took my capital one credit card and put it in the now opened slit. Then followed along the outer side of my phone. The corners are tight don't be a hero and pull it off. Go all the way around with whatever you wanna use. There is a specific tool for it but I'm impatient.
Edit: Changed String
persist.audio.spkcall_2mic=OFF
To On didn't help
Edit: Changed String
persist.audio.aanc.enable=false
To true didn't help
Any ideas? I'm pulling my hair out.

Thanks for the reply man. I've done multiple recordings and have no idea what the heck is going on. I've gone to every ROM avaliable to see if there were any ones that worked but none did so I have no clue. I'm probably just gonna diagnose it as hardware.
Edit: Well good news and bad news. Bad news is I've stabbed holes in the cover to my microphone. Good news is people can hear me a little better. Progress. Heck yeah.

Edit: Well good news and bad news. Bad news is I've stabbed holes in the cover to my microphone. Good news is people can hear me a little better. Progress. Heck yeah.

So you're saying it was your case/cover that might have been the problem? You tried taking it off and making calls?
Hard for me to diagnose the problem on my end because like I said it's on an off for me. So not sure if any changes I make work, until it happens again. I'm going to try recording myself next time it happens as well.

I'm not going to say that that's a solution, like I said people can hear me a little better but it did make a difference. After work or later tonight I'm going to post audio files of what I sound like with the issue.

What most of the times happen to me is that the other caller hears me like if I was holding the phone far from my mouth, and other times they hear themselves like echo.
I can't reproduce the problem. It's totally random apparently. Maybe RAM memory related?
Cheers

Maybe but not likely.
I doubt its software for me at first that seemed like the problem but I've COMPLETELY gone back to stock several times and there is still the issue. I'm going to take off my back tomorrow and do a thorough cleaning.
Edit
Sprint recently released their new network Spark to the LS980. And so I decided to go ahead and upgrade and up on doing so I found a custom ROM

[ROM][1/30] Stock Rooted LS980ZVA [ODEX]
No in order to have the latest update and still be able to use a custom recovery there's quite a tricky process you have to downgrade the aboot in order to be able to have a custom recovery. Doing this solved my microphone issue. I do not know why but I'm not complaining.
Glad to hear that solved your issue! Maybe it was a network issue all along? I think I figured out my issue to.
Embarrassed to say, but turns out it was more a user error. I realized when I had issues it was when I was lounging around. Turns out depending on what I was doing and how I was holding the phone it would kind of cover the secondary mic on the top of the phone which was causing the issue. Can't say I've had this issue on previous phones, but seems to affect this one.

All that matters is people can hear us now.

@Rayan. I got the same problem.

I've been running OmniRom with PA full modular gapps for a while. Currently on 03/05 nightly w/Franco 203.
I use Viper4Android to adjust my headphones and speaker levels.
I have been having extremely low in call volume since 4.4 and I can't figure out why. No one seems to have an issue. I've played with adjustments in Franco's app as well as settings in Viper but it doesn't help. My music sounds great though and voice calls put on speaker are very loud and clear. It's just the handset speaker that's really low.
Previously on my Sensation, I could make edits TPA2051_CFG_XC.csv that would help. And in the Nexus 5 forums I see you can edit mixer_paths.xml to help as well but when I look at the Nexus 4's mixer_path, there isn't a line to adjust handset volume.
Is there a file I could edit to adjust my in call volume? Or any other way to fix this?
Edit: Forgot to include, I use hybrid radio 33-98 for LTE. I've tried other regular and hybrid radios as well and that hasn't helped.
I wonder how helpful this would be for you, but I faced problems with in-call earpiece volume. I had to connect my headphones, call a number, maximize the volume, remove headphones and re-test the volume without headphones. Apparently, I had noticed that it mixed settings of both the profiles - with headphones & without headphones.

Just tried it a few times. No go for me. Volumes for with and w/out headphones are at max. I tried lowering one and the other. Or raising them at different intervals. Still didn't help.
Thanks for trying though.
I actually have the same problem right now. I tired using a flash able zip. Which I have no idea where it is now but all it did was completely disable touch for me. I never tried ViperX but I'll keep snooping around and see what works for me and let you know

Did you ever resolve this?

Nope. Sorry. I don't think many people are having issues. It might be hardware related but I haven't done a full format to test anything new out.
I update to the newest nightly like once a month and I don't make very many calls so it hasn't been detrimental to me yet.
I haven't seen anyone bring it up in the Omni thread though so I'm certain either a clean start should do the trick or it's hardware related and you'll need an RMA.
Hope you find a resolution for your issue! I'll definitely post something here if I ever figure it out on my end.
Same issue here. Occasionally I've fixed it between kernel or Rom flashing, but never found out what I did to fix and when I'd flash again it would go back to bad quality again. Sometimes I have to stick a finger in one ear and press the phone hard into the other ear to hear anybody

Guys, I'm on an s3, but someone posted a file in the neatrom 4.3 thread that works. Not sure if it'll work for everyone but thought I'd let you know that a fix is out there (can't copy the link coz I'm on tapatalk)

I'm a bit hesitant to flash something for the S3 onto the N4. Plus, the file in that zip you're referring to isn't one that's contained on the N4 in that directory.
Thanks for noting, though. Maybe I'll backup and try it to see.
