Hi all. Just got my Moto X Pure few days ago. But I noticed that my speakers are cracking at certain sounds. Specially playing the ringtone "Zeta", crackling occurs. Not clear. Does not happen with every sound. Thinking its a defective in my phone. Can you test yours playing the Zeta tone and let me know. Thanks!
I can achieve the same crackle playing that tone ONLY at max volume. I tried different audio settings (balanced or bassboost or off) all crackle at MAX volume.
Thanks. But my does not matter if its in max volume. Thanks for the reply. Moto X Pure, Returning....
PS; My Moto X2nd same ringtone, NO Problem at any volume.

I posted on the official forums about this problem and already got one reply: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/c751a88e77?commentId=981431
I chatted with Motorola support and they had me run through some TSing steps: Reboot, clear cache, factory reset
The chat support couldn't look up my IMEI for some reason, so they gave me a case number and have escalated it. I should get a call in 24-48 hours.
I'm not sure if I even want to return it if this issue is widespread. No sense in returning only to receive a phone with the same problem or perhaps MORE problems.
At Max it does have some crackling but at one step below it doesn't, and it's still better than the next best thing you can get, due to it's front facing speakers. Remember it's a phone. Spend money on a wireless speaker or headphones, this isn't supposed to be your personal boombox.

That sounds an awful lot like "you're holding it wrong". I've owned a lot of Android phones and none that I remember had it this bad or even close.
If Motorola doesn't want me using the phone that loud, they should not allow me to increase the volume that much. They may simply need to lower the gain with a software update. Until I know for sure that pretty much everyone has this problem, I'm going through Moto's support channels for a resolution.
Looking at the mixers_path.XML file, the gains do seem to be rather high.

I have not tinkered with that file or the settings within before. A quick Google seems to suggest that screwing with those settings can cause similar distortion. Sounds more and more like something they'll have to tweak in an OTA.

It may be the eq settings. Do you have it enabled?

I have had it enabled as it comes enabled by default. While troubleshooting this problem I discovered this feature and disabled the EQ in the sound settings menu. It mitigates the crackling but doesn't make it go away entirely.
Sorry if it's happening ALL the time even at low volumes but just about any speaker system cranked up to full volume will snap-crackle-pop unless you are running very expensive speakers with very powerful, clean amplification! I mean come on...can we even call what they put in a cell phone a "speaker"?? Maybe if you were the size of a grasshopper you could call them "speakers"!

None of my other phones do it. This isn't a budget phone either. Hell my Moto G doesn't do it.
So is this happening on ALL these new phones...(don't have mine yet...it's being shipped right now) or is this just happening to a random few?

YUK...I hope it doesn't bother me! While this is not my first Moto phone it is my first unlocked "almost" vanilla Android phone. I really want this thing to be GREAT!

If this issue is so wide spread WHY DIDN"T EVEN ONE REVIEW say anything about it???? Did they all get different phones? Is this a batch issue like we have seen on many threads about many phones like the S6 scratch debacle?

Probably because it's easy to miss. It only seems to happen at max or near max volume and with only certain sounds. It might also only be 10% of the phones or something have it. It would be very easy to have one of the 10% and not notice unless you're looking for it.
It's not a huge deal at all... don't get me wrong. I'm particular about my phones though, so it is enough for me to consider looking elsewhere.
I tried to capture it on video, but it doesn't pick up well. It is worse in person. https://vid.me/tavk
Well I couldn't hear anything bad through my laptop with headphones on so I hope it is tolerable. TY
Well for me, I have to bring the volume down 4 notches so theres no rattle. Another thing I noticed is that when choosing a notification sound, between each choice, theres crackle and pop coming from my speaker. Weird. Also, rattle is from top speaker only. Seems like for ringtones, the phone uses both speakers, but only through the bottom for notifications. When playing music, even at maxx volume, i don't notice the rattle. Well, as much as I love this phone, i think I'm returning it. Since its a widespread problem, maybe the next revision, they "will" install different speaker. Guess the wait for N5x begins for me.

Hello together,
i donĀ“t find a similar Thread for the One with my Speaker problems. So i start a new one:
I got the following problem:
When i play a Sound with my Phone after 2-3 seconds the Speakers do a "klack" Sound in front of the shut down.
example:
When i press Volumen + or - the Phone plays a Sound, around 2-3 seconds later the Speaker do a "klack".
the problem seems for me similar with the problems the Galaxy Nexus got.
Someone can confirm that?
I get that with my Nexus 4 and almost every other Android phone i have used. I can mostly only hear it if i used some sort of volume boosting mod/app or if i hold my phone close to my ear after a sound is played. I think its normal, but annoying.
Wow, i thought i was the only one. I have the same issue. After playing a sound file (ring tone, music, anything), if you put the speakers to your ear you can hear a shhhh sound, then a "click" which almost sounds like the speakers "turn off". For some reason the same sound sometimes appears when opening a music app (such as HTC Music), as in the speakers get turned on OR some sort of amplifier gets applied. Turning off beats audio doesn't help. I got O2 (germany), 1.27 Stock rom. I'm tempted to try 1.28 custom rom to see if it's a software bug, but i am a bit afraid i might need warranty to get this fixed...

although it does click, but clicking to the point that is audible, i think something is wrong somewhere.. u might as well email htc about it
It's audible in a quiet environment when i have the phone close-ish to my face. Question is whether it's fixable via software update or whether i need hardware fix. I don't really feel like sending it in already...They'd probably say it is within tolerance anyhow.
I just wonder, tons of ppl complain about stuff such as "corner is too sharp, tiny gap etc", why don't more people complain about this noise if it is "normal"?

You never had a decent amplifier, had you?
It's dedicated amp. All those devices "click" when turned on and off. There's nothing to be fixed, although the sound should be very quiet.
It's like hdd click of death indeed. Sound is quiet but audible.

Like I said, it's an amplifier turning off (and on as well to be precise - but usually this sound is more subtle).
I don't think this is an issue. It's just a fact of life with speakers.

ah , it shouldnt be that loud too, unless you're using earphones and u hear the click then it's fine. but if hearing it without speakers, i think it is insulated badly. like i said, try emailing htc
My Asus D2X Sound Card for my PC does that, always wondered what it was.
I just installed this and it looks very cool, but it's pretty overwhelming. Any suggestions for which .IRS files work well with headset, speaker, and bluetooth headset? For bluetooth headset I've also got my regular mono one for phone calls, and I have a stereo bluetooth one from Jaybird so I'd assume they use different settings. Speaking of, what do you guys put the settings at as well.
I looked a bit at the Viper4android thread, but it's like 700 pages long.

Oh, I didn't realize I was breaking a rule. You mean we can't discuss optimal settings for an app for our phones? The only rule I see that might be loosely tied is using search, but I have searched. I have searched and am aware of the main 700 page thread, and also the English viper website, none of these have users discussing the G2 specifically. I'd rather avoid that 700+ page thread since I am specifically asking about the G2 in the G2 forums and what settings work well for others.
Just to repeat, I'm not looking on how to get the program to run or install it, I am looking for other G2 owners feedback on which particular modes worked well for them. I thought it might be a nice discussion.
If I'm breaking the rules please delete my thread then, my apologies.
Moving on..
I don't use the bluetooth headset so I can't help you on that.
But for the headset, I realised that using the xHifi setting under clarity gives quite a little whitenoise. But not using makes your music sound muffled , so I guess it's a trade off(unless you know how to configure the IRS files). I am using my mid range sennheiser CX-300II without any IRS filters, cos none of them work well. You could try loading everything into the folder and going through them 1 by 1, or even making the file which is rather tedious. I couldn't be bothered, the playbackgain control and dynamic system is enough for me.
If you plug your phone into powerful speakers (I have a bose 321 but damn those things make the windows shake) you MUST turn off the VIPER bass and reduce the dynamic bass to ~15%. Differential surround(Haas effect) makes the sound sound off center on speakers so avoid it.
I noticed G2 doesn't have music effect setting, am i suppose to assume that viper is on?
No it's not that simple. What I did was:
1. Install the drivers
2. Backup build.prop then change the lines specified in the main thread for Viper
3. Install google play(doesn't work on stock LG player for me)
3b. (unsure if really necessary) Disable stock LG player
4. Reboot
5. Wait for boot to complete and see all the superSU permission flashing...
6. Play something, then go into viper, enable the first option on the speaker tab and check the "driver status". It should say that it is installed/normal, that it is enabled and that it is processing. To really be sure go play around with the settings but be careful with the gain (don't ramp it sky high and drop your phone in shock)

I just installed the app and it does all the necessary things for you. But still, Viper4Android sucks for our phone. The driver it installs significantly lowers the audio quality. With a huge amount of tweaking you can finally get the quality back up to where the G2 is at stock. Everyone is better off not using this mod for the G2 unless the author gets a much better audio driver designed for our chipset
check out the V4A audio profiles... it gives a great shares from people on settings... try them and check out the one you prefer

Yeah I don't know how happy I am with this app yet. I can get stuff louder, but I hear more distortion, but I have to play around a bit. One odd thing is that different things have different volumes after installing this. For example, my speaker phone when in a call is nice and loud, but when checking voicemail it is very quiet, kind of odd and I can't figure out how to selectively fix these things so I may be forced to uninstall.

I think you guys really don't know what you're taking about. The clarity viper adds to the sound on both my stereo and my headphones is absolutely unreal. After having set up viper, I think the biggest flaw of a stock g2 might be the dull und muffled sound it transfers to proper speakers.

Think what you want but the drivers this uses noticeably took away from clarity in all aspects of the sound. Every speaker setup can sound different so maybe this type of sound just works better for you, my high end systems though it definitely takes a lot away from the audio

neither am I nore do I have a high end soundsystem so I don't notice the difference to the worse. Who listens to anything on a high end soundsystem through a phone?
On my dynavoice speakers and my b&w headphones my music gets several different new dimensions using viper, regardless of the code of the driver.
Edit: of course every setup and every set of ears gets different subjective results. But it's so obvious that the sound is so much better with viper

This is my headphones profile. I haven't set up one for the phone speakers. It's a modified copy of something I found somewhere on xda. I guess you can just create a headphone profile yourself and then copy in the following text instead of what it says in your backed up profile. But I'm not sure if that will work or if it will destroy your phone and kill your family. You will find your profiles (once they are backed up) under storage/emulated/0/viper4android/profile. This works on my headphones and with my ears, that doesn't mean it will work for you. Here it goes:

Easy to test, go to a very quiet room. Really quiet. Put your phone to your ear while screen off and listen. (Not phone off)
You will hear a faint sound, static, cracking well some kind of noise.
This is nothing new, and not just bound to this phone. However I had this issues only on the Nexus 4 and never noticed it on other phones I had.
It becomes a bit annoying while in call, really quiet room, and every pause, when both parties are not talking.
I think only option is learn to live with it? As if the numerous threads from N4 and other devices are true, this is a HW fault on all devices. Some ppl just do not hear it. What varies is the intensity, which ppl reported that exchanged their devices.
Is there someone on some variant not hearing it? (State your age as well)
Is there someone who exchanged their device based on this problem and got a new one with a different level of the noise?
Mine is international LG D802
I do hear the pops and squeals when I'm on a call, but not otherwise. VZW version, rooted, stock rom, "A" version of modem/radio.

The sound that you experience, since its through your BT as well, might be normal connection/call sounds. I have this really on all phones even sometimes on iPhone. But if its something tha tyou do not expect to hear, and have it constantly , bring it for repairs, I do not have somehting out of the ordinary in the calls, except what I described in the OP.
What I mean its really like static electricity, cracking sounds. But its faint, you won't notice it in normal environment, at least not when you do not know what to look for. There are youtube videos for the N4 with the sound I mean. cant listen to it now, as I am at work but I think something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOxtzStUZ4
you really need a quiet environment, put your ear to the earpiece.
Also thanks for your post!
I am on ATT and noticed this and I was thinking about returning it but I tested the display model at the ATT store and the same thing. I tested an Iphone 4s and the same thing with the earpiece. I think this is more common than people think because you really have to be in a quiet setting to actually hear it. Thanks

whether you'll be kind enough to write a link for what you did two months ago, as you say it is successful and that the problem is solved. I tried to find it but I could not

All I did was accept the 12B update. 24A (Kit Kat) is rolling out now, I believe.
I'm sorry for bringing this from dead, but have you guys found any solution for this? Or it's not fixable once it occurs? charging + headphones +v4a developed this bug this evening on my g2.

My ears or better brain adjusted... same way you adjust to every annoying sound after a while. It is there... but you stop caring - hearing it.
I do not believe there is a software fix. If your problem is the one that I described, new hw might help.
But as I said. I adjusted ...
Definitely seems to be hardware problem. If I knew about it earlier I would never connect headphones and charger at the same time. Symptoms: static noise @ approx. 120bpm from both speakers, while phone in deep sleep.
Tried uninstalling v4a drivers, app, poweramp, flashing different kernels, clearing caches, and what so not.
I don't want to raise hope, but I found temporary workaround. I'm on stock kk, and I use g2 tweaksbox and gravitybox to get statusbar aosp quicksetting tiles. There is a compass tile. If I leave it ON there is no more noise. At first I thought that maybe this prevents phone from deep sleeping, but bbs is showing that phone sleeps well. Have not tested standby battery impact yet.

Hi,
Thanks for the remainder, as I noticed latest @dorimanx kernel eliminates this (from v 8) and my itchy fingers installed Viper4Android again and yes I struck my luck the distortion starts again...
My conclusion is an option between have better audio performance in mid to high volume level. But, lived my days with G2 enjoying the distort...
Or uninstall everything about viper4android and listen to flat music beat...
And I choose ingore the distort and drive away with awesome audio performance in my bluetooth car audio....
Cheers,
Hey, do you have xposed? I noticed that if I enable compass in quicktiles, there will be no more crackling. But I'm not sure about battery. So I use this when it's quite, in the evening, and I start hearing cracks, I just turn on compass.
Don't know if this is supposed to be happening but anytime I play an audio file such as a ringtone or alarm or what have you, the sounds start off really quiet and then boost to their full volume after a second. Is there a setting I overlooked or is this by design? Anyone else seeing this?

Settings, sound, increasing ring tone option? Not sure if that's it or not.
I have caught this also where it starts off quite and then all of a sudden gets really loud but don't think it is every time.

Does it happen every time or on random? Some phones have in the settings->audio->fade in option.
Maybe its somewhere deeper in sound options?
Or esle, it could be some kind of software bug, hopefully not.
Hmm, it seems to happen more when I make it make a sound, like messing with the ringtone setting or volume control. Hit the volume rocker once and it's a barely audible beep even though it's almost all the way up. Hit it again and it blasts at full volume lol
Reboot doesn't do away with it

Yeah I've had this. Also the tone for notifications can be cut off short also. It's nothing major. I'm sure the next update will fix it.

Is there a setting for the phone being in a pocket? Might be it!!

Yeah, this is true for me as well. I believe it's an AOSP "feature". I haven't received my MXP yet, but this happens with my N6 currently.

Same here. Still using my N6 also. And I believe you're right. Seems like I remember someone saying it was a " feature".

Ugh. A very odd feature
Sent from my XT1575
Nobody mention that in the review, thats odd. We really need some quality in depth reviews.
Doesnt sound good (no pun intended).
I think it is some sort of speaker protection. I was playing music at call it 30% (it faded in). Then, as I cranked up the volume, it seemed to level off meaning 80%-100% sounded almost identical. Maybe an auto leveler/compressor to protect the twin speakers?
Complete speculation, your thoughts?
If you look at moto's official specs, they list something like "stereo speakers with smartboost". This tells me they have some sort of "feature" that dynamically controls speaker volume also.

I notoiced this too, really don't like this... First 2-3 seconds it's very low
Just received my device and its perfect...except for the top speaker being louder than the bottom one. I've seen other posts with people having the same issue so I want to see how many people this is affecting before I exchange mine.
I also noticed that at max volume they seem balanced but anything below that then the top is definitely louder.
same issue...top speaker is louder

I had google call me and they told me its that way by design...um, well that sucks... does the htc one m8 have this issue? anyone know
I noticed this as well, but it's a really minor difference, at least on my phone. I'm fine with it.

I've had the M7, M8, M9, and a Moto X Pure.. They were all very well balanced /even sounding speakers. My N6P, is not..... And likes the OP, mine does balance out as you turn it up almost full volume.

I'm guessing Google are now just saying this so they don't have to keep exchanging phones.

For me it ruins the stereo effect of the phone...and 'stereo speakers' are part of the package we paid for when we bought this phone. At max volume they're fine so maybe it is a software issue.
Does anyone know how to edit the speaker gain xml or whatever?

I don't know that, but you can always try something like PowerAmp and mess with the balance. This doesn't help with videos or YouTube (or Google music), but for listening to MP3's through the phone speakers it will help.

I just got off phone with tech support, cleared my cache data and speakers are working great now..both at same volume..give it a try.
Top one might be slightly louder, but not that noticeable. I don't use speakers much anyways.

Thanks, I cleared my my cache but it didn't fix my speakers
Did they give you anything else you could try? Or did they say why clearing your cache would fix them? Isit a bug or something?

This could possibly be a software fault though...cause at max volume the speakers are balanced.

It does not appear to be a software fault. The drivers are different sizes, set in different enclosures (the bottom houses a microphone etc), so they are bound to sound different. Even at full volume, while more balanced, the tone is still different between the two. Can the balance be fixed with a software tweak? Certainly, hopefully it will be, but clearing cache has nothing to do with it.

Yeah the drivers being different sizes makes sense and would explain the difference but looking at the poll quite a few people have said their speakers are balanced?
Surely Google and Huawei wouldn't have overlooked this when designing the phone, especially when nexus 6 didnt have this problem. At first I thought it was a hardware fault too and was going to exchange my phone but I'm not sure atm.
Either way I hope a software tweak can fix this too.

At max volume, the speakers are reported to be more equal on most people's devices who are reporting this problem. I am on my second Nexus 6P after I requested an RMA for the speaker issue and both have had the unequal speaker balance. Both are also much more even at maximum volume. I think some people are just much more receptive to the difference than others and there is likely some variation between devices as well.
I have this phone for rew days now and I already noticed that the top speaker is slightly louder than the bottom one. I understand that the bottom one is a bit smaller because it has to include the microphone as well but they should fix it with a software update.
I did clear the cache, and it works, not at all, but okay, before clear cache, my top speaker so loud, almost cant hear bot speaker at high volume, after the cache cleared, its only have slightly different, just a little louder on the top
O ya, i have htc one m8 too, but dont have this problem, its sound fantastic
