This user did a video review of his newly received 10.1" Head Unit with Android 5.1.1 lollipop from Joying
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZETYnUqVuo
What do you think? is this worthy or should I go for the Octa Core from InDashNet with Lollipop?
(in any case I would go with 7 inch, 10.1 maight be a bit of an overkill)
I am wondering the same thing the 10.1 sounds great but may require a hack job to get it in the dash. How are the Joying units... I haven't played with the Chinese units for a while, have they improved? I may get the Joying lollipop unit in the 7 inch version to mess with.

Looks like the back of it is a double din fit, but it pokes out an inch or so therefore it "overlaps" the surrounding dash instead of the outside frame being flush with the dash, like this picture you can kind of see it

2008 Honda Element. Looks a bit funny, but most people think its awesome and its much safer for my wife with the backup camera view.
Sorry but the 10" just seems silly to me. It is not integrated into the Dash, it looks like some one duct taped an ipad on the dash.

It depends on what your dashboard looks like.
Here is my fresh 10.1" Joying in Sprinter dashboard.

You're just jealous. There is a reason Ron Jeremy made so many films.
Seriously though. In use the gain in usability from the real estate does make it difficult to care or even tempt you to go back to a 7. I'd put one in my Cayenne Turbo if I could get the canbus to work with the amps.
That Sprinter dash is cool.
After having an 8.4 inch infotainment system in my 300, I would not want to go to a 6.2 inch system in my upcoming Jeep. I could definitely see me putting in the 10 inch screen

10.2 inches is welcome, but I don't like the fact that it is sticking out like this, otherwise I would have bought it.

Ditto!
That's why I put mine inside dashboard frame. I had to chop off some of tabs and stuff to make it fit. It wasn't easy, but hey I've enjoy doing it.
Can you share a picture of how you did it?
I got reallllllllly close to pulling the trigger on the 10 inch.
My dashboard insert would even fit it on the "inside". https://i.ytimg.com/vi/jVe5BpW5Kf8/maxresdefault.jpg (not mine, but same vehicle)
But after thinking it through, enough really is enough. Plus sticking with the 7" would make it a straight up plug-and-play rather than messing around cutting the dash insert kit up to finally fit it nicely, etc.
Another problem that stands out to me on the 10 inch, is the resolution. Its the same resolution as the 7", but a lower pixel density. That could mean a bit much on the side of bleeding eyes. I personally find that on a 7", I prefer a resolution of at least 1280x800, which is obviously higher than the 1024x600 offered on both the 7" and 10". So sticking with 7" will at least keep the pixel density OK, if not great.
On to the review itself... effectively says "yep, its a chinese android head unit". Spends a lot of time in settings doing nothing much. Does the typical back and forth dragging of the launcher that means absolutely nothing. The part that stands out is that the guy doing the video really loves his pontyfat and even sticks a pontyfat sticker over the joying... as if pontyfat is a better brand name than some random chinese electronics manufacturer's name. This leads me to my last point -- the 10" has the manufacturer's logo behind the glass, whereas the 7" has it painted onto the plastic -- much easier to remove for that clean black plastic look, which will REALLY be nice after suffering for a few years with this freaking ugly JUST HOW THE FREAKING MANY LOGOS DO YOU BLOODY NEED ON THE THING??? https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51Pb3BQZ9mL._SX425_.jpg mess.

How is the volume knob on this thing? I notice that your unit is recessed a little, which would be the case for my Civic SI as well. Just wondering what those buttons are like to operate.
recarro said:
Well, the volume knob is not too firm nor too soft, you feel the turns as you move up or down. At times after powering up I'll turn the knob but there's a slight delay in its response to adjusting the level. The buttons are soft and you don't hear any clicking sound, I like the fact that they designed it this way.

do you find it hard to use with it recessed like that? how much of a delay are you experiencing just out of curiosity?

Looks nice!
I went round the corner to maplin and asked did they have any spare stands they use for their tablets, they gave me one lol

I did try the actual Xoom's protective case. Unfortunately, it does not fit. The Acer is wider by about 1/2 inch. I had to return the case and order the one now offered at Staples for the Acer. Just an FYI if anyone is curious

I have held the Xoom and Acer side-by-side. The size is actually quite different in both length and width. The Xoom is smaller on both counts.
However, the iPad is wider than the Iconia, and the Iconia 20mm longer than the iPad. I have found that the Iconia will fit in some iPad sleeves. Provided there is a bit of 'give' in the iPad sleeve's length.
Anything that is purpose built for another device though (with specific dimensions in mind) is hard to adapt.
Also, 10" netbook sleeves and cases have proven to be quite good with the Iconia as well. Often there is a little wiggle room which is handy for cables and chargers.

Received it today and it works great with the Acer. I have it setup on my desk slightly tilted back and the tablet is much easier to see and use. It's very adjustable and very stable.
Also got a DAGi stylus to use with it (see picture). It works much better than a rubber tipped one and is much more accurate. Also, no fingerprints !. But it's something else to carry around.
I just picked it up from Staples and so far so good. It does what it says although it doesn't seem like there is a way to keep the front cover flap secured to the back when in use. I'm not sure that I care all that much about it though. Otherwise seems like a good deal for the money.
PS. It seems to be the official ACER case.
hmmm. sort of ugly.
Got the dock from Acer. Wanted to throw a few pics down as well as a review.
In your review... you state: "you can NOT dock the tab with the case on".
Are you referring to the Acer case? I was thinking maybe it was thin enough that it might allow docking? Thanks!!

Finally pulled the trigger and bought a RAM Mount to mount the XOOM in my GMC Sierra truck. It couldn't have been much easier and it works and holds great! I got really tired to putting my XOOM in my passenger seat and then having to hold it to type or whatever. I am on the road a lot so this is going to work out great! I also have a charger hard wired that I can plug in that is hidden (when needed) and I just pull it out when needed... which is very rare.
I have an Incipio Silicrylic Case (which I really dig) on my XOOM so here is what I used:
Ram Mount RAM-HOL-TAB6U http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogRes...77045072079076045084065066054085/Default.aspx

The only real downside as of now is the hole on the back of the ram mount does not line up with the power button on the XOOM so it is a bit of a pain to try to turn it on. My answer is going to try and find an app of some sort that just lets you touch the screen to turn on the XOOM (although it may be something it already has, I just haven't looked into it yet).
Looks great! A tad pricey, though. With a setup like that your Xoom should be covered by insurance, too. I'll keep this in mind for when I get bored and break down wanting this guy in my Bronco.

It wasn't too bad price wise. I actually bought it from expressmounts.com (I believe it was) and I think it was about $50 for everything. That is well worth it in my book to be able to have the XOOM mounted like that.

I'd be a little worried about the screws pulling out. Plastic never holds very well. You could maybe use some liquid nail (or similar product) on the screws might help.

I didn't use screws. I used a bolt with a locking nut (with a washer), it isn't going anywhere. lol The plastic would have to tear or rip apart, that's the only way the thing would fall.

I just drilled holes where I wanted to put the bolt and nut. The whole plastic console pops out so it was very easy to do. It only took 5-10 minutes.
Looks good man. I just pulled the trigger and did the mount. But i went with the RAM POD I Universal No-Drill Vehicle Mount. I have a Silverado and and Cadillac STS-V. I did the no drill as i think putting it in the cup holder are might prevent me from shifting in my car.

Hi all,
I wish to buy a new unit for my car - VW Polo 2011.
I currently own an Ownice C200 unit, and to be honest... I'm not too keen on buying another unit from Ownice,
due to the fact their after-sale support is utterly terrible.
However, they do seem to be the only manufacture offering a unit with an IPS + OGS screen, as per the latest C500+ product,
and also a built-in 4G sim reader; Both of these features are what I'm after actually.
1. Has anyone of you already own this product? If so, does it really make a difference? i.e. screen brightness / readability under day light, viewing angels, colors, etc.
2. Is Ownice really the only manufacturer to have such a screen and 4G in its units?
I'm simply afraid that I would end up buying Ownice again, due to no availability of competing products... :silly:
I checked out Joying, but I couldn't find any 'advanced' features as the above...
Can you recommend other brands/manufactures?
Thank you!
Anyone to help?
So... is there a reason why no one would reply? Perhaps my questions are not understandable?
I wanted to know if I should buy it tomorrow on 11.11 or not...
Basically they are very simple as far as I see them:
1. Is Ownice the only Android Head Unit to include a 4G SIM reader?
2. Does Ownice currently offer the best screen in this field?
Thank you..

1. Yes, it seems like it. Make sure the bands work with your network provided.. otherwise it won't be useful.
2. They're all the same screen (as long as you compare same resolution)

Really? I actually thought the 2.5D Glass + IPS + OGS (One Glass Screen) solution was a new innovation from Ownice,
as in, this was the upgrade from C500 to C500+.
What about the MT3562 inside it... will it ever support Nougat or laughably Oreo?

So 2.5D Glass, and OGS are trivial when it comes to how it looks when your screen resolution is only 1080x600, aspect ratio of 1.8:1.. thus making your Pixel Density (PPI) ~56? Your smartphone is like >300.
Also, i just looked at the 500+ specs, its a TFT screen.. not IPS.

Not sure if they have changed specs and haven't updated their website.
Where did you get that spec from.
Also, its a marginal increase.. like I said.. its a low resolution display.. not going to be a night and day difference between IPS and TFT.

It's taken from here:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item//32817585183.html
and I realize it's not going to be a night and day difference, but surely it's better than C200's screen.
To begin with, C200's screen seems to be have a plastic outer layer, so today it's full of micro-scratches.
Also, in day-light, it's quite DIM, so I hoped C500+'s would be much brighter...?
I wonder if anyone of the forum members have received this unit already and could tell whether or not the screen is much of an upgrade or not.

I put together spec and pricing comparison tables of the most popular "Restyle" and "Universal/Double-DIN" Android and competitive stereo models for 2007 to 2018 Jeep Wrangler JKs. Tables include the latest Android models from Dasaita, Seicane, AIMTOM, XTRONS, Joying, Insane Audio as well as comparisons to popular competitive non-Android units. Hopefully this info is helpful to anyone researching Wrangler upgrade options

This was a great idea, but it's out of date. Would love to see an upgraded version now that head units are coming out with the PX6 chip. If you do, please make sure to include GTA in there!
I picked up Dasaita's PX6 in the list though I probably need to scrub the market again. What's GTA? (guess it's time to start shopping again )

Awesome. Glad to hear that. I'm a little pumped for GTA. I think they are a Canadian company, and they gave me straight answers about the Chinese electronics inside. They have a different option that I like for setup. Check out the stereo styles dropdown!

They look like they're doing what Insane Audio is doing by sourcing OEM electronics then putting a custom pre-load on it, dropping it in a pretty box and adding support. For many it's probably a bit more reassuring than sourcing direct from China.

You're probably right. But they answer quickly and their english (so far) hasn't been broken. I feel like I would get better support from these guys than I do Dasaita right now. Plus, I like the alternative style they offer. I have not seen that anywhere else. They said they are working on the new PX6 model. Should be out around the near of the year.

I'm not knockin 'em at all because they're alleviating some of the concerns that many users have, domestic sourcing, support and what's likely a more stable OS configuration as they stabilize on a solid build with much less frequent updates (where you're likely to pickup bugs). My biggest issue with Insane Audio is that they're SUPER slow to update to current OSes (at last check they were still on Android 6.0, even for their PX5 platform) and they charge an arm and a leg for what amounts to only minimal value-add. GTA seems to be much more reasonably priced given what I know about the wholesale costs of the base hardware.

Nah, it's cool. I don't know them, but I get a little bit of a warm fuzzy from what little I've seen. I would look into Insane for sure, but 1) the price is just too much, and 2) the screen is too small now that I'm spoiled with a 10.2". I love that theirs is waterproof. But I spoke to them a couple of months ago, and they said they have no plans to do a new version for the JK!
I just took a look at the GTA head unit, and it looks really nice. I did notice that their FAQ here https://www.gtacarkits.com/faq-android/ states that:
Can you update the software on GTA Car Kits Android Stereos?
There is no software updates planned, unless there is a software bug that needs to be fixed. The software has been tested for a long time to be without any bugs, hence there is no software update planned for the future. Apps from the PlayStore can be updated.

That does worry me from the standpoint that their video shows a custom firmware on there that appears to clean up a lot of the Chinese firmware config apps (like steering controls for example) are different. I emailed them for clarification, and will let you know what I heard back.
I also asked them about ADB passwords, whether or not the EQ works in all modes (apps, FM, and Android Auto), etc.
There's a PX6 on AliExpress https://www.aliexpress.com/item/330...chweb0_0,searchweb201602_1,searchweb201603_52 that appears to have the same 3-piece restyle trim as GTA, which looks interesting.

Whoa, awesome information. Thanks, jkchris! But on that AliExpress link, where's the one-piece unit? I don't see an option for it.

I didn't see any one-piece units. I also did not hear anything back from GTA, so that's not a great sign of customer service.
After looking around for a while, I began to see a pattern. 95% of the listings I could find stated that their headunit runs on Android 9, or even 10. One was so bold as to claim Android 10.1. Seriously? 10.1 doesn't even EXIST!
I noticed this when I bought my first Android headunit.
Android 10 headunit
After powering it on, and seeing the settings menu, I noticed it didn't look anything like Android 10. Ok, so you can make a custom theme, cool, maybe they did that here. But I was still curious, so I installed an app that gives me all the TRUE information about the headunit. Suspecion confirmed! It was Android 8.1.0. Performance was TERRIBLE, but it was NOT Android 10.0. I had at LEAST 10 emails back and forth with the seller about it. They tried VERY hard to tell me that EVERY UNIT they make has Android 10. After I made a brief video showing them the information I pulled, directly on the unit itself, and it shows 8.1.0, they immediately issued a full refund. lol Dead silent after that.
So what Android OS version are the vast majority of current headunits running?
Android 8.1.0
It's not all bad. As long as the headunit has the right hardware, Android 8.1.0 will run just fine. I have an ATOTO S8 Pro. Experience is nearly butter.
But how do you tell from a screenshot, what the REAL OS version is? If you're familiar with Android at all, these will make sense.
This is a listing for the ATOTO A6. Notice how the theme of the status bar icons is pretty much in line with Android Marshmallow? Even the logo used is correct. This is believable. I give ATOTO props for being honest and upfront about this.

This was taken from Amazon. Notice the font and background here? The whole theme seems to have a HONEYCOMB feel. That's likely because the build is Android 3.x. This isn't Android 9.1. Also consider that Android 9.1 doesn't even exist, so that's two strikes. Stay away from this kind of thing.
This one was taken from an eBay listing. Here are inconsistencies that give it away. This is both Android 9.0 AND 10.0, right? Must be some kind of dual boot magic! Sorry, but no. Also, I forgot to circle the home, back and recents buttons, but you can see the icons are from all the way back in the Honeycomb days, Android 3.x. No manufacturer is going to go to all the effort to bring forward such old theme elements into the current version of Android. It's not worth the time or effort. This could be as old as Honeycomb, or as new as Oreo. I'm betting is older.
Here is one from Pumpkin. It's a more well known brand, or at least people have heard of them. But they too are playing the advertising game. Same as before, we have some very old icons, and it's not worth the time to forward port old icons. Plus, WHY? It doesn't even make it look good. I wouldn't even bet on this being Oreo. I might guess Marshmallow, at BEST. This was advertised as Android 10.
And here we have the best one! This manufacturer managed to pull off the impossible! They created Android 10.1, even BEFORE GOOGLE COULD! Ok, where do I start with this one....
1: So, yeah, Android 10.1 doesn't exist
2: Icons on the left, top one doesn't line up. Faked home screen
3: Bottom right icons, can't tap recents with microphone overlaid on it. Non-functional.
4: Right side. Internet Explorer on Android? Almost positive that never happened. We DO have Edge now, though.
This one was just full a crap.
Bottom line, when it comes to Android headunits, be VERY thorough about getting the specs on the unit you're looking to buy. This market is saturated with companies looking to sell you something they can't deliver on. Marketing makes it sound so good, that you think you're getting a sweet deal. Android 10 headunit for $60, sign me up! (Yeah, don't fall for that fake crap, please).
Don't waste your money on something you think is current. There's a very high chance you'll actually end up with a unit that should have only been worth $10.
If you would like to have a look and see what your headunit is ACTUALLY running, you can use this app to find out:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=itgeeks.fullsysteminfo&hl=en_US
Let me know what make, model, and Android version your unit is running. I'm curious to know the results!
Happened to me too
Got my money back and still using the unit. I must admit it's smooth and never sluggish once in over7 months of use

@chevycam94 I agree we should vigorously pursue disputes with sellers of such garbage.
I got a Carlaoer sold as Android 8.1Go that turned out to be API 23 (Android 6.0)...opened a dispute and got some money back.
Folks should be aware that even memory and flash numbers can be fudged, so a thorough inspection (Aida64 comes to mind) is required...maybe even get down to Linux level and run terminal commands.
Bottom line...yes, it's disgraceful how the buyer is being openly lied to, but in my experience the OS is a lot less important vs perfect integration with the MCU and Canbus. No OS will help you if you can't control functions or operate the unit.
They should focus on solving those problems instead of selling "Andiod 10.1" with "Internet Exploder" built in ?
I started down the rabbit hole of trying to get the cheapest head unit with the largest screen and I didn't even consider that they might lie about the Android OS. Eventually I just went with the S8 Ultra because of the support here on XDA, some limited reviews (XDA, Youtube) and whatever was the latest/greatest with good customer service.
