XOOM mounted with RAM MOUNT in GMC Sierra - Xoom General

Finally pulled the trigger and bought a RAM Mount to mount the XOOM in my GMC Sierra truck. It couldn't have been much easier and it works and holds great! I got really tired to putting my XOOM in my passenger seat and then having to hold it to type or whatever. I am on the road a lot so this is going to work out great! I also have a charger hard wired that I can plug in that is hidden (when needed) and I just pull it out when needed... which is very rare.
I have an Incipio Silicrylic Case (which I really dig) on my XOOM so here is what I used:
Ram Mount RAM-HOL-TAB6U http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogRes...77045072079076045084065066054085/Default.aspx
Ram Mount RAM-B-138U-C http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogRes...65077045066045049051056085045067/Default.aspx

The only real downside as of now is the hole on the back of the ram mount does not line up with the power button on the XOOM so it is a bit of a pain to try to turn it on. My answer is going to try and find an app of some sort that just lets you touch the screen to turn on the XOOM (although it may be something it already has, I just haven't looked into it yet).

Looks great! A tad pricey, though. With a setup like that your Xoom should be covered by insurance, too. I'll keep this in mind for when I get bored and break down wanting this guy in my Bronco.

It wasn't too bad price wise. I actually bought it from expressmounts.com (I believe it was) and I think it was about $50 for everything. That is well worth it in my book to be able to have the XOOM mounted like that.

Ok I have to ask. Where did ya get that wallpaper? That is cool!

I'd be a little worried about the screws pulling out. Plastic never holds very well. You could maybe use some liquid nail (or similar product) on the screws might help.

Just speculating here, but I'd say there's a pretty good chance he put some sort of backing plate on the other side of the plastic. I know I would have done it that way. OP, that looks awesome. Nice job.

I got it from submicron at deviantart. Here is the link: http://submicron.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d3e0qnx EDIT: I forgot that I added the XOOM logo at the top of the wallpaper.

I didn't use screws. I used a bolt with a locking nut (with a washer), it isn't going anywhere. lol The plastic would have to tear or rip apart, that's the only way the thing would fall.

I just drilled holes where I wanted to put the bolt and nut. The whole plastic console pops out so it was very easy to do. It only took 5-10 minutes.

Looks good man. I just pulled the trigger and did the mount. But i went with the RAM POD I Universal No-Drill Vehicle Mount. I have a Silverado and and Cadillac STS-V. I did the no drill as i think putting it in the cup holder are might prevent me from shifting in my car.

I will. I mainly did it to see the paformance data on my sts-v. I got a Bluetooth odb reader and bought torque pro. Shows all the goodies like hp, torque, spark plug fire....etc.

How's the vibration on it? I've been thinking about doing this but I drive a big Dodge Ram and I'm worried that it'll be vibrating too much to be functional.

I Have a 06 Silverado 1500 Z71 With 4In lift and over sized mud tires. The vibration from the road noise was no problem for the RAM kit.. And it did well with all the potholes here in Houston.

I absolutely love having my mounted in my truck, I can't imagine going back to having to hold it now in my lap.

My friends and I made 2 little aluminum tabs that angle up, and insert between my stock stereo and the plastic in the dash on my Ford Edge. Its incredibly ghetto, but it works!

I agree, that would be ideal for smaller vehicles where space is limited. like a 4runner or tacoma truck.

I created a 'ghetto' Tripod for the vibrant check it out!

Being very impressed by the Vibrants 720P video recording and since my aging 2005ish point and shoot looks like crap compared to it I needed something to hold up the phone while I shoot video.
I am still working on it. It's still in "beta" I need to stableize it and balance it and what not but it works good for FREE! Its very ghetto
So my creative little mind came up with this...
Check it out.

Tripod is a word generally used to refer to a three-legged object, generally one used as a platform of some sort, and comes from the Greek tripous, meaning "three feet".
You have made a 'ghetto' base or 'ghetto' dock.
If you used any duct tape at all, that will also change your device from 'ghetto' to 'redneck' dock.
Now that you have be schooled.. I am gonna finish my beer and wipe the laughter tears outta my eyes. Good show man..
Just as a tip though, on the serious, I was at Walmart and picked up a black plastic business card holder, a little bit of single sided craft felt and cut the felt to fit inside the card holder and made a nice looking base/dock.

So, I had a dream last night.. why not put clay in the opening of the hole to make a soft seating surface and to grip the phone. Then make 4 slits in the bottom of the 'tripod' to worm some velcro straps through.. whala.. tripod to arm strap mount to watch movies while jogging!!
Are you going to post a demo vid?
hahaha, it's ghetto allright. Nice

I wonder if they would make such a thing for our HD2s.. that would be very cool!
we would have a face-front video chat Skype or Fring..
Sharing is caring.
To bad I couldn't get the one I made that nice looking!!
wait... you made one right?
atleast share with us your idea.. how you made it.. and how it looks like, pictures?
The title of this thread was so confusing, I had to click on it. But you're right, that's actually a good idea! What would be cooler is if it was imbedded in a case, so that it could just flip out when needed... I have the "Body Glove" that has the kickstand, but it'd be neat to have the mirror flip out and allow iphone-like skype... although, not sure I'd ever use it.
i did make one. made it out of balsa wood and used two mirrors off a small disco ball. it took me a few trys of getting the mirrors angles right but did get it. i wish i could show some pictures but its gone, thats what i get for leaving it out where my kids ( and by kids, i mean my cats) got to it. you could make one too. with some time, and more time, and some glue and sharpe knife you too could have one. balsa wood is lite and easy to carve. you can get little mirrors and the wood at any craft or hobby shop. all you need to do is carve two pieces of wood to fit on top of the phone snug and have two places for the mirros to sit in the wood, hardest part is getting the angles right so you can hold the phone or put in a cradle and sit back and chat away. good luck if some-one trys. if you do, lets see it. ill be making another one, when its done i will have pics for yall.

That is one helluva idea there buddy. I too many months ago thought about making one like this but never got around to it....probably because I would never use it. But the mirror built into a case is an idea someone should work with.

I agree, if this was built into a case, that would be awesome. Heck, this might be a better video chatting experience than with a real front camera as you won't need to use that vga crap lol.
Didn't notice this before. Doesn't look like something they will come out with soon though. They're still looking for a manufacturer from what I've read. Wish all these companies would hurry up with the solution for phones without front facing cameras. This one took a great sleek approach to it. I have actually ordered the IseeU and it's suppose to take a while to ship, but if it doesn't ship I'll just cancel it and wait it out for this one.
UPDATE
Ordered the Iseeu and as it turns out it doesn't exactly work for the HD2 (duh). The angle the clip is at and the mirrors aren't made to work correctly on the HD2. Hopefully this prevents other people from ordering one in hopes of it working on the hd2.
Wouldn't the image show up flipped upside down? Just thinking about the angles, it doesn't look like it would work correctly without an inverting lens

I wondered how long it would be before someone spotted that!
Well actually, it looks like the back of the clip is acting as the third mirror, which in essence would make the end image the right way up.
Very interesting concept though, but would benefit from being built into a case. Can you imagine having to dig this out of a pocket everytime you wanted to use it?? I'd lose it way before I had the chance to use it!!!

Doesn't matter. With tango you can flip the image around. If you touch the switch camera onscreen, it will flip the image. It's meant to switch from the Rear camera to the front, but on the HD2 it just flips the image. I want a mirror. I hope someone comes out with one for the HD2
I'll make some !
OK, my years of trolling have ended. I'll throw some things together in the next 5-7 days and post my results/pics.
I have the ability to mold small run plastics. I'm even thinking simple heat formed mirrored acrylic/poly sheet. Depending on the size of reflective surface needed I think I have a way to integrate it into a case and have it simply pop/slide up.
Small run <100 shouldn’t be a problem. Technology/New phones are released so quickly it's just not cost effective to produce something like this in mass.
Yes, other than using a prism the image will be upside down. As long as Tango can flip image I don't see a problem.

Polished G2 Battery Cover

The best I can do is change oil and brake pads on a good day lol! I did just redo the gasket on my oil pan and it wasn't too bad plus changed one of my O2 sensors. That was a royal pain without the proper wrench.... anyways, sorry to ramble on good work! Might have to steal that idea. Ever think of doing the same to the phone bezel so it would match? How did you do it? Did you use automobile metal polish? Do you know what type of metal its made out of? I was thinking about doing this a little while back and forgot about it. And I also want to etch some custom art into it as well. Make it more personalized
I would also like to do the trim piece but it would be tricky to do it without touching anything else, and I don't see myself taking it off.

you should have finished it off with wetsanding with 4000 and then polished it with a rotating cloth and some oil (but not to intence, the oil can make the metal dark and ugly if u let it heat up too much from the friction)
i polished a piece of metal like that one time, made it clearer than my bathroom mirror
but still nice work

My semi-homemade car mount

Next wee, my g/f and I will take a little car drive vacation. We'll be visiting landmarks from Chicago to Kentucky to Virginia to DC and back. So, earlier today, I got a brilliant idea for a car mount that will enable me to use a 10 inch gps. Well, as soon as I got out, I went straight to a hardware store and got the parts. I use the top part of the following car mount and incorporated it into my set up.
http://www.buyincoins.com/details/n...r-cradle-mount-for-ipad-gps-product-2492.html
Here are some pictures. I test already test drove around. Absolutely no obstruction of view whatsoever. Also does not obstruct my radio and other stuff there.
Total cost for parts = $11.
Edit.
The previous pics were old. Here is a new one that I did right before my DC trip few weeks ago.

http://www.buyincoins.com/details/n...r-cradle-mount-for-ipad-gps-product-2492.html
Here are some pictures. I test already test drove around. Absolutely no obstruction of view whatsoever. Also does not obstruct my radio and other stuff there.
Total cost for parts = $11.

pretty cool, looks great it works Awesome
I purposely put it there at the exact height where it won't obstruct my view but if I want I can record everything in front of my car like the police car. I wanna record some videos of our trip as we drive towards some landmarks.
You'll see them on youtube.
Wow !!
You actually drill holes into your dash/glove compartment for those bolts ??
I own the SpiderPodiumTablet from Breffo and it does the job well .... very versatile as you can bend it into any configuration to make it adapt to your surrounding/Car type...etc
check it out here:
http://www.breffo.com/aboutspt.html
I've actually checked those out before. I just couldn't find anything on the market that would (1) not obstruct my view of the road, (2) not block any of my essentials in the car like my cd player and ipod plug in, and (3) be sturdy enough to not wobble when I drive.
And I see nothing wrong with drilling holes in the glove compartment. I actually had nuts behind all of that to keep everything in place.
I like it.
We're taking a trip to the in-laws today, and I have half a mind to let the wife drive so I can fiddle with the GPS.
A serious mount solution is going to come up when I get my Jeep, so seeing stuff like this is another resource for ideas.
Thanks for taking the time to take and post pics.
Most mounts for something like this either suction to glass or comes up from floor with a gooseneck. Neither is ideal. Thats whY I made this. I used to work as a cop before I switched career. This setup kinda reminds me of the old job.

I used to build "specialized police vehicles" a few years back.
You totally flashed me back to all those grimy Toshiba Satellites on floor mounts.
Get some large electrical shrink wrap put around that heat it up and would look very professional and clean.
It comes in several colors.
Ohhh nice car.but I will hold on to my venture mini van

OMG, why the hell didn't I think of that? Will do it as soon as I have time tomorrow. Will post updated pictures after. Thanks.
Congrats. You just ****ed up your car. You are so winning right now.

Haha, yes I am an idiot. Stupid idiot actually. I simply don't view my car like most people. For me, its just another thing for me to modify based on my needs.
Is it your car that I ****ed up?
Dude, props!
I do stuff with my car that people find weird but ut makes total sense to me. This may be the (future) engineer in me, but your airbags are not in anyway near the mount, are they?

Nicely done! Looks good and I like the placement. I did something similar with a very similar mount I picked up, only I ****ed my '97 Odyssey up even worse by drilling a big hole right in the upper dash. But when you drive a beat up old mini-van, looks are not your top priority.

I also had that in mind. It's no where near the passenger air bag.
perhaps I should explain something. I came from a long line of engineers. And one of the first things i learned in life was to not be afraid to be adventurous. Case in point. My neice's clarinet's thumb rest broke. Her teacher sent it to a repair shop for an estimate. The estimate was 125.00. I went ahead and bought a $4 thumb rest and screwed it in for her. There was someone who said to me that I was ruining her clarinet by putting in the thumb rest myself.
The point is if youre not willing to take a chance then there will always be people who wants to take advantage of you.
The past 48 hrs I've replaced 2 bathroom sinks and 3 focits (sp?), polished up 2 bath tubs, put in 4 new pairs of break pads, replaced 2 rotaries, and polished up the homemade mount to make it look much nicer. I'll post some pics in the morning. Been trying to finish everything before our road trip. Gotta the clean the car and get our supplies ready for the road trip tomorrow as well as rotate tires.
I do all of that myself and I'm suppose to worry about a couple of holes in the dash board that can very easily be covered up if need be?
"Normals" will never understand modding, don't bother to try to explain it to them.
Hardware hacking isn't for the faint of heart or those who bow and scrape before such petty little things as "the warranty".

First post ever and they put themselves on the map with flame douchery.
Wonderful start there.
By no means have I ever been afraid to mod. It's what engineers do...or at least the ones that do it for other things other than money haha.
As long as no one dies modding that is.
Here's a sample video taken from my iconia mounted to my car.
Before I bolted the mount into my car, I checked to make sure it was empty behind there. It's also out of the way of the passenger airbag.
During our driving trip to DC and our visits of the monuments and museums, my iconia served as a gps, video camera, and entertainment device. The battery life on this thing is amazing.

T-Mobile Z3 bent already

Just noticed that my phone is already bent. The only thing I can think of is that this could be the result of the arm band I used the first day I had it. FFFFFFFFFKKKKK. This is real BS I hate cases but I hope you guys are using them..
EDIT: Adding pictures. The phones seems to have bent at the frame at the power button - there is a slight dimple right below it.
I am extremely sad, mad, angry, and upset.

The Glass is warped on both sides. I am afraid of using the phone because it might crack if it gets too hot
This picture shows the worst of it!

He said arm band.
which is weird unless it's a really tight armband or he put it near his elbow.
Have you contacted t-mobile?

Never put the phone in my back pocket, and I don't wear tight fitting pants. The phone is usually in my hand when I am driving, and on the desk at work.

The armband couldn't have been too tight otherwise I would have no blood flow to my arm, and if it was near my elbow no movement. However, this is the only thing I can think of because of the above stated.

No, not yet. I think I would be just better off returning the phone - it's literally just been 4 days.
Screen cracks are fairly common with arm bands
First time i see a bent phone from it.
It is easy to generate a lot of force when jogging even when it isn't really tight, it tends to be the g-force doing the damage.
Well no harm trying to request for return.
I'd say it is really a bad timing to return a bent phone due to bendgate.
Good luck.
It actually looks prettier like this lol!

Xperia Arc is back! .... I loved that phone So much.
I hope this is a rare case. As much as I care most about the thickness of a device when it comes to dimensions, it does make them bendy.
Maybe i'll create an app that straightens your phone........

None of this adds up to me. Can't see how an arm band could cause this. I tried bending my phone a little bit after seeing this thread, and it's a little flexible, but my bending didn't cause a permanent bend (granted I wasn't trying to permanently bend it either). If you don't wear tight fitting jeans and don't put it in your back pocket, all I can think is you tried to bend it yourself... If it's not that then there is something else you did that you're not telling us...
Please show us what the armband looks like.
What model phone(s) is the armband designed for?
Whatever the cause, using wooden blocks and clamps you should be able to bend it back. I have seen it done with an iPhone 5/5S.

Look, I'm just telling what could be the issue by giving you as much information as possible. The phone is big enough and skinny enough to bend - aluminium isn't known for its strength. I am not rich enough to buy a phone and bend it just for fun. I switched to T-Mobile and ran with an AT&T M8 waiting for this thing to get released, and I'm just sharing my concerns and experience with community.
I don't need to lie to you, even I don't know how in the heck this is possible!

Lol, I will skip on that - I rather pay the $50 restocking fee.
That's a significant bend for you to not know how it happened.

And that is exactly my point! Phones shouldn't just bend.
Besides I think you have already made up your mind about me so there is no point in arguing with you. Just consider this a warning and be careful with your phone.
You must have massive muscle bulges, while running the flex of your deltoid and biceps/triceps probably caused it to bend. Its a testament to your strength.
Comedy aside, it definately sucks though. I do not think TMO will replace it. It does seem more fragile than the Z2 according two those who have both.
I usedto have a copper z3 that hada slight bend in it just like yours. What made mine worsewas a bulge that separated the aluminumfrom the glass just behind the power button. Like you im not sure how it hapoened as i usually take great care of my phones (have not dropped one since 2006). I was out for the night with friends while it was in my front pocket. The jeans were a little snug but not really tight. I think we may see more issues like this in the future as more time passes. I had had the phone for some time before i noticed it so it was definitely a new occurrence.
Oh man.. this is no bueno. If this happened here, it is going to happen to a TON of people. Jeez.. maybe this will be the 1 upside to the thicker, bulkier, plastic based Z3v frame and body.
