T-Mobile Z3 bent already  - Xperia Z3 General

Just noticed that my phone is already bent. The only thing I can think of is that this could be the result of the arm band I used the first day I had it. FFFFFFFFFKKKKK. This is real BS I hate cases but I hope you guys are using them..
EDIT: Adding pictures. The phones seems to have bent at the frame at the power button - there is a slight dimple right below it.
I am extremely sad, mad, angry, and upset.

The Glass is warped on both sides. I am afraid of using the phone because it might crack if it gets too hot
This picture shows the worst of it!

He said arm band.
which is weird unless it's a really tight armband or he put it near his elbow.

Have you contacted t-mobile?

Never put the phone in my back pocket, and I don't wear tight fitting pants. The phone is usually in my hand when I am driving, and on the desk at work.

The armband couldn't have been too tight otherwise I would have no blood flow to my arm, and if it was near my elbow no movement. However, this is the only thing I can think of because of the above stated.

No, not yet. I think I would be just better off returning the phone - it's literally just been 4 days.

Screen cracks are fairly common with arm bands
First time i see a bent phone from it.
It is easy to generate a lot of force when jogging even when it isn't really tight, it tends to be the g-force doing the damage.
Well no harm trying to request for return.
I'd say it is really a bad timing to return a bent phone due to bendgate.
Good luck.

Xperia Arc is back! .... I loved that phone So much.
I hope this is a rare case. As much as I care most about the thickness of a device when it comes to dimensions, it does make them bendy.
Maybe i'll create an app that straightens your phone........

None of this adds up to me. Can't see how an arm band could cause this. I tried bending my phone a little bit after seeing this thread, and it's a little flexible, but my bending didn't cause a permanent bend (granted I wasn't trying to permanently bend it either). If you don't wear tight fitting jeans and don't put it in your back pocket, all I can think is you tried to bend it yourself... If it's not that then there is something else you did that you're not telling us...

Please show us what the armband looks like.
What model phone(s) is the armband designed for?

Whatever the cause, using wooden blocks and clamps you should be able to bend it back. I have seen it done with an iPhone 5/5S.

Look, I'm just telling what could be the issue by giving you as much information as possible. The phone is big enough and skinny enough to bend - aluminium isn't known for its strength. I am not rich enough to buy a phone and bend it just for fun. I switched to T-Mobile and ran with an AT&T M8 waiting for this thing to get released, and I'm just sharing my concerns and experience with community.
I don't need to lie to you, even I don't know how in the heck this is possible!

And that is exactly my point! Phones shouldn't just bend.
Besides I think you have already made up your mind about me so there is no point in arguing with you. Just consider this a warning and be careful with your phone.

You must have massive muscle bulges, while running the flex of your deltoid and biceps/triceps probably caused it to bend. Its a testament to your strength.
Comedy aside, it definately sucks though. I do not think TMO will replace it. It does seem more fragile than the Z2 according two those who have both.

I usedto have a copper z3 that hada slight bend in it just like yours. What made mine worsewas a bulge that separated the aluminumfrom the glass just behind the power button. Like you im not sure how it hapoened as i usually take great care of my phones (have not dropped one since 2006). I was out for the night with friends while it was in my front pocket. The jeans were a little snug but not really tight. I think we may see more issues like this in the future as more time passes. I had had the phone for some time before i noticed it so it was definitely a new occurrence.

Oh man.. this is no bueno. If this happened here, it is going to happen to a TON of people. Jeez.. maybe this will be the 1 upside to the thicker, bulkier, plastic based Z3v frame and body.

how hard was to put a couple of magnets to the phone? get in and look at my idea...

So I was asking to myself.... how hard could have been? I also thought... is common sense the the phone needed some kind of mechanism to lock the phone when closed and opened, right?
Well, then after thinking I came to a conclusion that well we, users could get creative and do something about it, so I went into a quest looking for the smallest and thinness magnet I could find and I came across magnets that are only 1/32" thick.... now... I thought if I could find a way to cleanly attach them to the phone in places that I already have thought of ( will show tomorrow when I get to my computer ) and would be the least visible.
What do you guys think? Any ideas about attaching the magnets?
Juan I have been looking for magnets, and finding the ideal location....there was a thread a while back regarding tape on the inside between the ribbon and the "z" leg.....I like this idea, but my concern is over GPS use. I'm sure one ca calibrate the bearings, but not sure how it would affect GPS signal....
Please post pics and experiences...really interested in doing this myself, as TMO will no stand by the defective hinge...sorry "design feature"!

I posted a pretty detailed post in the accessories forum. You might want to look at the "hinge fix" thread over there.
Magnets might interfere with the compass
Look into how the magnets might effect your signal a well.

I could swear I saw what looked like magnets on the display g2's at the tmobile stores I went to this week. They all looked like they had a small strip of magnets on each side by the hinge (on the under side of the screen and the body).
Maybe it was just a display model thing, but the phones were active demos.
this is exactly what i was thinking about doing but there seems to be to many problems with compass gps and possibly mememory loss if only there was a way to magetize the ones already in there
I personally think I see an easier way.
I'm going to try to attach a tiny piece of felt to the side of the Z hinge so it wedges a little more securely inside the recessed area on the top of the screen.
Open your keyboard, and you'll see where the hinge arms sit inside the recessed areas with small 1mm or so gaps on either side.
I think it'll work...
we need velcro

I just picked up a package of (2) 5x8 inch magnetic sheets (self adhesive). The cost was under $2.
It is super thin (looking for my digital calipers, but I would guess 1/32 or thinner. Im going to give this a try and post some pics if it works well. If it works, this should be enough magnetic sheet to fix every G2 produced by HTC this year.
Well, I have found no ill effects of the magnetic material and it WORKS... I can now hold the phone upside down, sideways, backwards, etc. Of course if you shake it, it will open. But it will not open or close during natural use.
Took about 2 minutes to do, cost under $2 and I could do another 100 phones with the material I have.

How the F do magnets work, anyway?
im worried about putting magnets near a hard drive or radio.
What about rubber bands of some sort, such that when screen is fully out they lock, but otherwise snap back?

exellent! exellent!!!! just what i had in mind! that was exactly my plan, now, here, the same can be applied here ( i dont see on the pics but did you applied for when the phone is open or closed? or both? if is only when the phone is closed, well look at my picture, is paint quality LOL but i think it can be understood, with the magnets aldeady on the back of the screen, a couple of other magnets can be placed on the red area of the picture, thats a perfect area because there's an indentation there, and a little piece there would not affect the keyboard at all.
pd: info on where you got that material would be awesome, thanks!
pd2: i will do my own too and try different things and test the phone for at least a couple of weeks and see whats happens, also i will let you guys know the end results, i have insurance on my phone so if something happens i can get a new one on the way
pd3: i read for the phone to be affected by magnetic fields, it has to be a really powerful magnet, just look at other phones with magnets in the market... they seem perfectly fine.
I only did this for when the phone is open. Ive never had the phone open from the closed position.
I picked up the package of magnetic sheet at Target. It was in the craft section in a purple plastic envelope. It is made by Horizon Group USA and the SKU number is 765940168059.
going there right now!
Just an FYI, all 3 of my old Sidekicks had magnets so they won't interfere with cell or GPS signal. I am unsure about the compass however. I was considering a similar idea as well only with a couple tiny round silver magnets on the bottom section tops corners and screen section middle sides.
Sorry for this off topic but, why is your phone so shiny? like a polished metalic grey. Looks actually very nice. Polished? full skin?
Most likely took picture using a flash so we could see the magnets

If it still works, he should consider himself lucky. Things like is always makes me glad, I'm safe than sorry. I'm going to have to consider SquareTrade after I get my screen protector & case.
So we can assume now that the material used by Samsung is not the same in terms of strength and durability as Gorilla Glass.

My recommendation get a semi hard rubber case takes a beating. I have never broke a screen in 25 years of having a phone. I did Have a Blackberry old Brick (big square ugly phone) I dropped it off a 40 ft roof and it bounced and the screen never broke......... Luck of the Irish I guess
Either way I have dropped alot of phones and the semi hard case seems to take the shock
Bummer man, probably 145usd for a screen assembly.........
Note hasn't even been out for that long so even if you don't have insure to cover it I'm pretty sure your still applicable to apply.
A device that big and heavy would really break easier than the smaller ones I guess.

It works perfect no body damage just the screen
Its not gorilla glass its just a thin piece of common glass. I am pretty sure it broke because it landed flat on the screen.
The problem with any glass screen isn't that they are "shatter" proof, but they are scratch resistant. Just about any piece of glass tinsel strength will resist a scratch (except for a diamond), but a sudden impact, especially on an edge will pretty much shatter it. The gorilla glass can flex, if you've seen the video, but I bet they never show anyone striking it on the edge. Even though in your event, it fell on the face, from the look of the photo, it landed on the edge first, even if just by a small amount.
I have a Dell Streak and the first thing I do before exiting my vehicle, is to make sure it is in the pouch before I get out of the car. My previous phones (HTC's) got dropped several times getting into/out of my car. I use to keep an otter box case on it, but they are so bulky, not many cases around for belt use.
I feel for you, but, I bet just about any large surface area piece of glass would do the same thing. Head over to the Dell Streak forum and you'll see a few broken glass streaks.

Oh really? then we should start making cars completely of plastic if thats the case.
Before the SGS4 was announced they explained why they used plastic which should have been a clue that the SGS4 was going to be similar to all their previous devices. Don't like plastic? There are plenty of glass and metal options available. Since the SGS4 will be around for at least another 15 months *****ing that it's plastic is pretty futile. And everyone considering a SGS4 can either choose to deal with it or not. Rather than complaining, vote with your wallet and buy something else.

I don't care if they thing plastic does the best job, it obviously doesn't. It scratches, it's breakable. Sure HTC didn't do the best job of it either, but at least they used something that feels good/amazing in the palm of your hand.

I think they didn't want to update the look so people can familiarize with the brand better. People are beginning to recognize the Galaxy s3, and it will be easier for people to know the phone if it keeps a similar design. Sure, it could've looked a little more premium for once, but it's the software that's the most important, and they did a decent job with improvements and gimmicks that actually seem to work.

I reaaaaaaaaaaally dont get all the plastic hate, most people place their phones in cases anyway, especially if they are made out of leet materials like glass or the fancy-peeling One S aluminium, which is even more stupid.
My GS3 survived w/o a case for almost a year now btw, and because those "cheap plastic" back covers are so uhh.. cheap, I can replace them anytime for minimal cost, I actually have 4 custom back covers just for variety.
Oh and I should have added "Power Button on the side" to OP as another pun at HTC but w/e.

Not holding the device in your (jeans) pocket? Where in heavens sake should we keep it if you, for example:
- Are (In town) walking around?
- Are driving around on your bike?
- Have any form of interaction where you need two hands, and a table, desk, bar or other object where you can place your phone, or don't want to place your phone, isn't available?
And no:
- It's not subjected to impact. You know when this happened.
- Or my ass is backwards and I can sit forwards, but I do not think the right front pocket is my back pocket? So no. Didn't sit on it.
Bizarre.

I can assure you, it wasn't me in this case. Phone was facing inward.
I'm a photographer, and seeing this happening whilst it's in my pocket is just unbelievable.

Alright, then the phone was in your front pocket, shifted sideways, you sat down and your jeans pulled tight. This will break any phone. If you didn't bump into anything that is how it broke. Sucks.

As said, I'm a (club) photographer, the location where I have to work there's no place to sit down. So, no.
The phone is in my pocket day after day. No problem.
Skinny Jeans.
Breaking cell phone screens since 2005.
The glass is Corning' s Gorilla Glass 2, it is used by many other smartphones, which no doubt would have cracked too.

Do you have a car? I do, and I usually sit when I drive.
What's your theory?

Perhaps it was in the pocket of the trousers that you drove a car over?
I always keep my phone in my shirt pocket at work and pants front pocket outside of work and I never cracked a screen. The OP must have applied some pressure for the glass to break period.

Pressure whilst in my front jeanspocket. Right.
Gorilla Glass on it's own is somewhat flexible, but when you attached it to a phone you have pressure coming from the internal phone/frame side and whatever other force you are putting on the outer display side. You have force attacking both sides of the glass.
Back in the day when baggy jeans were all the rage this wouldn't be much of an issue, but now days with skinny jeans when you bend down or twist your leg the denim pulls tight against the phone putting an incredible amount of pressure on it from the jean and body side. As thin as the display glass is, it will crack.
Try it yourself, put your hand in your pocket and bend down like you're tying your shoe. Unless you're wearing baggy or oversized jeans, your hand is going to get squeezed.
The OP's cracked screen isn't from a single frontal impact, it comes from multiple pressure points.
People need to stop blaming the phone.

I never have a phone in my jeans when I drive. I always put it in my inside pocket of my jacket, for the fact that I don't have a car..
My job involves walking around and taking pictures. No sitting required nor possible at the venue where I shoot.

That I can I imagine. I don't have the physique for skinny jeans though, thankgod.

Bend/Breakgate Beware!

Hey XDA'rs,
So as of a few days ago, I was the happy owner of a Nexus 6 on Sprint, I even tested a VZW nano for a day.
I took it out with the family and we went to go eat at a sushi restaurant. The chairs were made of a faux-leather plastic with about 1 inches of padding. My Nexus 6 was in my back pocket and I heard a "crack". I immediately thought that the chair going to give way or something and I jumped up. I reached in my pocket and felt a sharp pain to have my hand emerge with a small laceration to my thumb. When I pulled out my phone, it had the top corner of the phone and snapped at the plastic antenna point and the body had contorted backwards at some weakpoint in the device.
As you look at the pictures, note that there are no scratches, abrasions, or any other signs of abuse or mishandling of the device. I am 5 foot 10 inches tall and weigh about 155 pounds so it is not plausible that excessive force from my weight was a factor.
This is a thread to make everyone aware that there is a potentially catastrophic structural weak point where the plastic antenna meets the metal rim. Don't care to hear if you sit down with your phone or not or hear lectures on how physics works.

lol, #bendgate
no issues here. not in a case, keep it in my back pocket, 5'7" 170lbs.
You put one of the largest phones on the market in your back pocket and sat on it....and you didn't think there might be a problem??
The phone wasn't designed to mold to your backside.
Why would you ever decide to sit on your phone? I know your intentions here are to inform, but I don't understand why you would keep it in your back pocket and sit on it in the first place.
This phone is too big not to bend if you sit on it. Sorry that happened man.
Why are you sitting on a $700 piece of technology? Would you take your laptop and sit on it? I don't get it...
im confused. did you know your phone was in your back pocket and you sat down anyways expecting it to be ok? or did you sit down on your phone forgetting that you had it in your back pocket?

Sitting on a 700 USD tablet.
It takes all sorts.
Not sure if you're expecting any sympathy for sitting on this or any phone, but I don't see you getting any here. That's just plain negligence.
Not sure why you're all giving OP a hard time. He's just reminding the fact that some of us need to be more careful with how we sit down with our phones. I've always had my phones in my back pocket and never had a problem.
That sucks...
but seriously, what all these other guys have said. What possessed you to SIT on your phone?!?
I thought just woman put their phones in the back pocket? Are you a big dude with tight jeans?
Sorry about your phone, hopefully you can get it replaced.
6" phone, back pocket, chair=broken phone. Moving on

I always look at where I am sitting first. If it is a rigid surface, such as a park bench, a wooden chair, a concrete step etc, I will not sit down with my device. However, a padded chair and my padded backside have never caused me any issue with any of my large devices. Note 4, Note 3, One M8, iPhone 6.
For everyone else who seems to struggle with this concept, understand that this thread is not a "Don't sit down with your phone in your pocket" thread. This is a thread to make everyone aware that there is a potentially catastrophic structural weak point where the plastic antenna meets the metal rim. The "catastrophic structural weak point" is your bony backside, not the phone

Seems to only be for the Nexus 6. No other device has had this issue.
