Like the other poster said, it is almost certainly lint. The easiest way to get lint out of a headphone jack is to use a small drill bit. Here are the steps you can find from searching around a bit:
1) Do not put the bit into a drill! ...
2) Press the end lightly into the lint-filled bottom of your headphone jack and spin it clockwise.
3) Pull the bit gently out; there should be some lint on the tip.
4) Repeat steps 1-3 until lint is gone.

Looking for some help with headphone jack, semi interesting

hey guys,
here is the short story of whats up. I broke off the tip of a headphone adapter in my wizard. basically the smallest piece of metal is stuck in the headphone jack and refuses to come out.
First, any ideas on how to get it out, I tried toothpick/paper clip with super glue not too much luck. If its easy to take apart say so and I'll try that.
The other part is that my phone makes no noise and I can't talk into the mic on it cause the phone thinks there is constantly a headset attached. Anyone know a workaround on getting the jack disabled or a workaround like that?
Thanks in advance
It happened to me once. I took the phone apart, and poked a pin into the other end of the headphone jack (the one facing inside the phone) and it eventually popped out. Maybe you could try some small tweesers if you don't want to take it apart.
Taking it apart isn't so hard, you need a small torx key, and somethign flat to prise bits open.

speaker problem, my phone thinks the earphones are connected when they arent

my speaker works when my phone rings, thats it, i cant hear anything when i answer the phone or if i play audio / video. i can hear everything if i plugin my earphones, obviously through my earphones.
so it means that my speakers are working however the phone thinks for some reason the the speaker phone is always connected when it isint. thats the only explaination i can think of as to why i cant hear anything from my phone speakers.
its not in warranty as i baught it from a different country so i am hoping i can fix it myself,
there has to be something i can do to get it to work, i am not afraid to open up the phone, is the socket where u plugin the earphone easy to replace? would someone have an internal architecture of the phone specially how the earphone socket is connected. would like to get all the information before i open it up
cheers
This can be a physical problem. Try to blow the dust out of your headset jack. Helped for me...
I got the same problem, i tried to blow the dust out of my headset jack, but it doesnt solve the problem.
I also tried to plug and unplug the Headset and i tried to clean the jack.
I will try to disassemble the phone and solve the problem.
But first i have to get these small torx.....
I think there is a small switch wich hangs in the wrong position, maybe its possible to override the switch status per software?

Impossible via software I think; there's a registry setting to change to "headset" and vice versa, but it doesn't seem to do anything; the physical switch seems to override it.
Easiest way to fix is to keep trying to blow the switch back into place, or to carefully use a small cocktail stick or needle to reset the switch inside the jack. If this doesn't work,
GUESS WHAT? its stuck in handsfree mode again...and oh yah, my 1 yr warranty was over the week they returned it to me from the 3 long months. Sooo i decided to open it myself...
1- open your prophet (it will void the warranty... and if you dont know how, then go on here http://www.modaco.com/content/HTC-Prophet-Prophet-MoDaCo-com/240109/Changing-you-prophet-case/)
2- look at the jack, you will see it covered, its actually covered by a lil plastic cover that you can pop off with a small screw driver, when you do that, you'll see all the steel parts..etc
3- plug in your earphones, you will see what get pushed back as the jack goes thru.
NOW, on the right side, there is a connector that when you unplug you earphones, it will STILL BE TOUCHING the other metal connector, you'll have to bend that a bit away from it. and there u go, you're done. put everythign back together and have fun.
NOTE: the steel they use in the prophet doesnt have solid properties, rather it will reform easily, So even if you fix it, when you plug your headphones back in it WILL screw up again, so since then i avtn used mine..and you dont have to, get bluetooth headphones or something.

[Q] Help! Audio jack stopped working!

Hi,
So today I was watching a movie in bed and holding my transformer with 1 hand. The bezel (or thing that separates the screen from the sides) suddenly moved up so it was now disconnected from the screen. My headphones had stopped working. I pushed back on the screen/bezel area and it got back into place but now anything connected to the audio jack doesn't work properly. There is no notification that anything is connected another sound comes out of the tablet as well as the headphones. Please help, as I am going on a 12 hour flight in 2 days and really want it for movies.
Thanks
Do the sounds thought speaker still works? Do your headphones still working with other device?
yes and yes
sounds like the spring connector in the headphone socket might have bent, had the same problem but in reverse years ago on an xda exec a little plate that makes a contact when the headphones are inserted got jammed in the open headphone position so no phone speaker. Yours sounds as if the contact might have bent when your bezel loosened and is not making the contact when inserted. Looks like an Asus job. The contact is doglegged so that when the jack is in it closes the contact, if yours/has bent straight when the jack is in it still won't contact.
But then again could be wrong.
maybe clean ?

This happened to me too. After I mod my tablet to add 2.5mm barrel plug charger my speakers stopped and the audio jack worked in only one side. Then a few hours later after I pressed on the bezel in the same place as you the audio jack did not work in either side. I read about reboot the tablet to reset audio and tried but it did not work for me. I opened my tablet and unplugged my speakers from the board and the audio jack now works 100%. I have replacement speakers, so I will soon be reinstalling and testing the original speakers and my replacements and maybe get to the bottom of this problem.
So maybe a tablet reboot (off and on) will do same for you without opening. Maybe there is another trick to reset the audio, but I do not know. It may be something else, but I do not know. Good luck.
If you want to open and unplug & plug speakers you need a torq #5 to open the two screws. Put thumbs on screen and finger nails over edge and under bezel lip and push/pull gently - starting a one of the top corners. If you get hung try wiggling a small plastic tool under edge and try again, carefully. The speaker plug on mobo is small white socket mounted on board in bottom left. Careful to not void warranty.
Thanks
Thanks everyone for your replys but I have a couple other irreparable problems so I'm sending it back to amazon

Nexus 7 distortion speaker fix

Hi my fellow members.
I know there's been a few different fixes on Youtube. The simplest way i found out was by accident.....
After you remove the back cover.....just unplug the speaker wire while you're listening to something with a sound, then plug it back about half way until you get a sound. That should do it. Remember DO NOT plug the speaker wire all the way back in. Now just use a drop of hot glue or something to keep it in place. I still don't know why if i plug the connector all the way back, the sound will get distorted again. Maybe one of my four wire is shorter than the others, or maybe gotta do with full electric connection. But heck, it worked for me and since my N7 is out of warranty
Hope this help some of you that have the same problem as mine.....or a wire connection like mine. Good Luck!!!

Nexus 4 Earbud Crackling when walking.

Whenever I listen to my earbuds and walk, I get this SUPER annoying crackling noise from the earbuds. This is only when it is in my pocket while i'm walking, so when I hold the Nexus 4, I get no crackling whatsoever. I have almost no clue on what this might be but I think it might be from my baggy pants and how it keeps hitting my leg when I take a step. Thanks!

By crackling do you mean like the cord rubbing against your body or your movement shifting the plug in the phone making audio cut out and crackle? Try moving around the plug with your fingers and seeing if it does it. I know mine has an issue where the plug wobbles and audio cuts out, but I haven't gotten around to RMAing yet.

I'm kinda stupid. Sorry for wasting your time right off the bat. I found out that my pants had a lot of static and that caused the crackling noises. Sorry, again.
Could be one of these:
1. The piece on the headphones where the cord connects to the plug (Usually thicker rubber here) could be messed up.
2. The jack in your Nexus 4 might be dirty. You can clean it in the following ways:
Tool needed: Air can.
It's simple: use an air can to blow out dust and lint that may have accumulated in the hole of the headset jack.
Tool needed: Q-tip.
Carefully insert a dry Q-tip in the headset jack to clean it out. Be sure to do this gently so you don't cause damage to your device.
Tools needed: Tape and a paperclip.
We call this last option "The Homemade Lint Roller Technique". First, open a paperclip into a straight line. Next, take a small piece of regular office style tape and wrap it around the paperclip with the sticky side up. Make sure the tape is firmly in place. You have just made a micro lint brush. Very gently insert the sticky taped paperclip end into the headset jack and pull out any lint or debris.
Have you tried the headphones in any other devices?
The fact that when you hold the Nexus 4 (I assume farther up), doesn't mean that it's the jack. The cord could also be messed up.

Haha, thanks for typing that. But it seems like you found the solution that I answered myself. Sorry.
