I found the sim card slot!!!

The other day I was messin around with my sdcard and I scratched the area on the side of the microsd slot and through the plastic thing covering something it said sim card

Did you even TRY to search the forum first?
Old, old, OLD news. Don't try to put anything in there, it's just a hole and you'll lose your SIM.

Kidding... Did you check the forums?
This was discovered like on day one, in addition it's just the slot with no tech underneath, so if you try to put a sim card in it it will get lost inside the device and never be seen again.
In addition this has nothing to do with android development of the device ;-)

lmao.. I hope you didn't put a sim card in there. It's just a open hole to the inside of the case. Anything you put in there will just rattle around the inside of the tablet. The wifi models DO NOT have the cellular device installed.

but is it usable though?

I accidentally the whole tablet!

while this seems funny (well yeah it truly is) I had the back off of mine the other day (I took pics meaning to post them on iTweakit,com).
It got me thinking what was "missing", as in how hard would it be to add "the part" acer puts in the 3g version, there were no connectors, or non soldered points I could see, so I assume its a different logic board.
Anyways if you did happen to loose your sim card in that "hole" you can remove the back by carefully using a spluddger (this is a plastic screw driver intended to prevent marring the plastic) to gently pry it away from the clips. The thing is screw-less. I started around the dock connector, after the first "pop" the rest detaches fairly easily, you can use your fingers to continue prying. As a warning, remove your microsd card b4 attempting as it sits in-between the back and the logicboard.
Also I caution not to mess around with the microsd slot, I somehow damaged it slightly so it won't keep the card in unless I try to "click" it in about 20x at slightly different angles, so as far as I'm concerned I have a 48gb tablet now, as I won't be removing the sd card very often! At one point the card launched out (microsd slots are famous for such launches cause of the spring pressure), popped me in the eye ouch!

Yes, you have to be careful about sd.. I broke my sd card when disassembling the device (left the stupid thing inside). Anyway, with scissors or a screwdriver you can fix your sd slot. Usually any problems happen because it gets bent and either the card gets stuck or is too loose

Interestingly enough, there does seem to be a strange void space next to the battery, with two screw slots. Perhaps someone with a 3g model could take some pictures of their devices internals?

A 3G modem is supposed to be installed into the pci-express slot. On the wifi-only models the slot is not soldered and probably the pcie controller as well, although I didn't look for it.. But there's a lot of space inside so with some mad skills you can solder a usb hub and connect it between the pcb and external usb port..

Boosting signal easily

In brief it works.
If you look at Note stuff on ebay like me then perhaps you have seen those signal booster things. Looks like a sticker. Cause it is!
Ok it looks like crap. But I know that putting in an extra antenna could help if its then able to also transmit what it receives. Don't know enough to know for sure...
But for $2.90 I decided to try. It was a small metalic sticker that arrived. Instructions look like they were written 10 years ago for phones with antenna poking out the top.
Having seen teardown pics of the Note I figured out the antenna is on the bottom below the battery. I was at a hilly farm where there is only one tower and positioning is both sensitive and predictable. Perfect for testing.
I put the sticker over the antenna and was surprised to see it dropped the 2 bar HSPA connection to a 2 bar GSM connection. Putting the phone where I could normally get 3 bar HSPA was a 2 bar HSPA. Ok this confirms the sticker does actually affect signal. Now to place it correctly.
The instructions suggest placing behind battery in the same direction as antenna. I don't know if top should face left or right but I put it there.
Signal much better than first test and better than control. Able to get 1 bar in many places which was 0 before.
2 bar HSPA became 3 bar HSPA and 3 bar became often 4 bar :-D
I've ordered some more so I can experiment with orientation and also try multiple stickers.
It was worth $3 !!!

Lol me too... me too... I'd wanna see the readings before I get too excited not that my coverage is horrible it'd be nice to get a bit more of a signal boost everyone and a while.

I bought one of these myself. from the tutorials Ive seen its seems that it must be placed on the antenna itself. & Notes antenna is placed inside the back case, so it has to be opened by unscrewing all those philips screws inside.

haha that's funny! I got a pack of 25 of those for like 10 euros about 5 years ago. I still have them around in some box. I guess I'll try it some time

I'm pretty sure that if you could boost your signal this easily and cheaply then phone manufacturers would just put them in the phone in the first place!

Think about it... I have seen and used these little stickers in the past before, back in the old days. Supposedly they work using harmonic resonance attenuation. However, even if you make the signal appear to be stronger, you have to remember that there is a very big difference between signal strength and signal quality. A strong signal doesn't automatically mean a good signal. If anything, the little thing is creating signal interference which will hurt your overall performance, despite the extra bars.
Besides all of what I just said, don't you think that, if it's so cheap and it improves signal performance so well, Samsung would have included it in its original design?
Go buy a cheap beer with your $3. It'll be better, trust me.

GPS Problems? Poor Reception? Accessories to Blame?

Just a heads up to anyone experiencing GPS and or reception issues, if you have any aftermarket accessories, be conscious that they may be the cause of your problems.
I've had GPS not been able to lock for a while now, and it turns out that the sole cause of this was an aftermarket metal battery cover. As soon as I put back the stock plastic one, I got a full 8 satellite lock within 20 seconds.
Any metal case, cover, bumper, etc could be having a negative impact on your reception and or GPS. This was definitely the case for my I9100

Yup, general thing.
Had the same thing happening on the HD2 just like alot of other people who bought the rubber like protection things when they just came out.
Actually it just not only blocks GPS but also wifi and mobile signal a bit which results in a bigger battery drain too.

It was quite annoying to realize that I've gotten lost a few times the past few months all due to an accessory I paid money for
Makes sense why early iPhone 4's had problems with reception, due to the metal housing

So it's just the metal cases? I've a gel case for my SGS2 and it works great with it

It's not the iPhone's fault brother, like 'he' said; "You're holding it wrong."
On a serious note, the case definitely have impact to signal and heat dissipation. Once upon a time, my HD2 was plagued by signal+heat issue due to some crappy case.

I get you cand send e-maild but sms', no. . Since I don't know where you are from, go to your local network operator store and ask someone to give you the right number for message centre. This should be stored on your SIM card but it seems to be a little problem.

Sim tray handle has slight free play

Hi all, I recently purchased a nexus 6p, very impressed with it, great phone, the only issue I have faced is when I ejected the sim tray, the little handle on the sim tray has a slight free play, in experience I have never come across this on my nexus 5, 5x, and other phones I've owned or put a sim in. Please confirm with me and check if ur sintray handle has a very slight free play, thankyou.

I did not notice anything funny about mine when I put it in. It's nice and snug now too. I tried to see if it would wiggle with my fingernail but it is solid. If you think it feels defective though trade it soon so you get in the replacement window.

That's weird, mine feels solid too, and had a snug fit, but just when I took the sim tray out it just wiggles very slightly, its not much of a major issue to hand in for replacement, if it breaks then I will. Thanks for ur testing.

Take the SIM out and clean it with alcohol.
Be careful not to touch the metal surface when putting it back in.

Try a different SIM, it could be duff or have been flaged by the provider.

I've heard another user who have had your same problem. (at the end, tired of that, he sold its XZP...)
On my XZP I have seen this problem a couple of times at the begin (two or three months ago). Now, all seems perfect.
Honestly, I don't know exactly if it was a of software updates or the only "hardware" trick I've done: I have put a wedge (a thin plastic foil) between the Sim card and the tray.
Originally I developed this trick because NanoSIM are slimmer than previous SIM[1].
